Welcome Dear Friends of RENEW, Welcome to our 16th annual RENEW gala! I am grateful for your support of RENEW’s mission to revitalize parish life and create a Church that is more inclusive and welcoming primarily through the formation of small groups. We depend on the success of the gala to enable us to serve all people and parishes that desire to renew their faith regardless of their economic situation. Your financial contribution makes it possible for us to fulfill our mission not only in the inner-city and rural areas of the United States but also in the developing world and on military bases around the globe. It also supports us as we develop innovative pastoral resources in multiple languages, for the visually impaired, and in print as well as digital formats. Tonight we honor three exceptional Catholic New Yorkers—Dr. Mary Flood, OP, Tom Higgins, and Mario Paredes—for their commitment to the faith which they demonstrate through service to others. Each of them in his or her own unique way has made the world a better place. As Pope Francis writes in The Joy of the Gospel, “An authentic faith which is never comfortable or completely personal always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it” (183). On behalf of the RENEW’s Board of Trustees and staff I thank each of you for your generosity. With your support we will continue to bring new energy and zeal to rebuilding the Church. Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler Award Mario Paredes Mario serves at the American Bible Society as presidential liaison to Roman Catholic Ministry, and is founder and chairman emeritus of the board for Catholic Association of Latino Leaders. For 30 years, Mario directed the operations of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops in the Northeast Region. He was founder and director of the Northeast Hispanic Catholic Center. Under Mayor Ed Koch, he served as a commissioner for revision of the New York City Charter and as personal advisor to John Cardinal O’Connor, archbishop of New York. He has served as a consultant to the Pontifical Commission for Latin America as well as a consultant to the USCCB’s Committee of International Justice and Peace and the Secretariat for Hispanic Affairs. Mario serves as on the Board of Directors for Catholic Association for Latino Leaders, En Familia Radio, National Salvation Army, Catholic Medical Mission Board, Cuatro LLC dba Access Medicare, World Youth Alliance, Hope for a Healthier Humanity Foundation, and Resource Center for Community Development–Hopeline; Board of Trustees of Douglaston College and on the advisory boards of Cervantes Institute and Catholic New York.

President’s Award Sr. Mary Flood, O.P., M.D., Ph.D. Sister Mary Flood is a specialist in infectious diseases and internal medicine and associate professor of medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center. She is a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York. Dr. Flood began her practice in infectious diseases in the early 1990s in New York City, which was the epicenter of the AIDS crisis. Moved by the fractured care of so many of the early patients with AIDS, Dr. Flood spent many years in the AIDS Clinic at New York Presbyterian Hospital. In 2010, she traveled to South Africa to provide AIDS education for many high school students and young adults in Durban where twenty percent of adults under fifty years of age are infected with HIV. Sr. Mary is he president of the Board of Directors of Saint Dominic Home, Blauvelt, NY and serves on the boards of The Lavelle Foundation for the Blind, Inc., New York and Dominican College, Orangeburg, NY.

Spirit of RENEW Award Tom Higgins Tom served as a US Navy Veteran and retired at the rank of Captain. Additionally, he served for a total of 24 years in the US Government in a variety of positions of increasing levels of responsibility both in the United States and abroad, retiring from the Senior Executive Service in 2010. Tom joined JPMorgan Chase in 2010 as the Global Head of Operational Control where he managed a variety of functions including cybersecurity, security, crisis management, business resiliency, and aviation. He also founded the military and veterans affairs effort at JPMC, including the 100,000 jobs mission. Tom joined First Data Corp. in 2013 as the Chief Administrative Officer. Tom is very active in veterans’ issues and philanthropy. He serves as the chairman of the Tug McGraw Foundation as well as a member of the boards of the Business Executives for National Security, The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, The USO of New York, and The OSS Society. Tom was appointed by the Governor of New York to serve on the College Council of the State University of New York-Maritime College.
