Scatology At press time we are months past our last hard snow. Men jog shirtless. Winter never came. Moved as I write this, I’m witnessing the network broadcasting of same sex couples exchanging rings, vows, tears and beaming smiles while being serenaded by the likes of Queen Latifah and Madonna at this year’s Grammy Awards. It was impactful and packed a relevancy wallop that was an emotional knock-out! A moment of scripted spontaneity still managed to be television magic.
they were out of hand towels in the damn bathroom! Susharians will note that the tiny portions of sad sushi trapped inside a mouthful of malformed rice “formula restaurant” will not work in ‘I wanna sushi Nirvana’ Reno. When the looky-loos consult their stomachs, this place too will pass quietly into strip mall oblivion—and reopen as a Panda Express. Consulte!
The sniper in me must confess that it was the shockingly gaunt Madonna, looking like a fragile Faye Dunaway—only older—who grabbed my imagination by the bollocks. Perhaps she’s been ill? I thought to myself. Iconic, yet pitiful, the way old rocker hubris looks on stage; she walked with a cane and seemed to be mildly in pain in the execution of her verses and “moves.” Was she a stiff-as-a-board-knee-pumpin-umpa-pah-lookin’ jittery fool? Hells yEaH! She wasn’t pitchy and she knew all the words, so I shall feel not sorry for the Material Girl; she knows how she got here and she signed all the checks!
“Places to Stay Away From” for $100 please Alex.” Named after a style of patterned socks, this pillar of downtown dining debuted a new magic marker color (“Smoky Quartz”) on their dry eraser board sign, precariously perched on the sill in their picture window frontage along the high-traffic First Street in the Riverwalk. Perhaps they don’t know that a sign is the shingle for showing the public that they’re a legitimate business and deserving of their patronage? Dry eraser board sign, oh yes I saw that in the bestselling “The Business Secrets of Dummies.” How early Basquiat of them. I know that when the movers and shakers in the Riverwalk District learned that the award-winning La Bussola, long vacant, was going to finally be replaced by a burger joint with a shoddy electric hood that does nothing to abate the haze of greasy smog hovering like Beijing mist in the place, and would have no access to the upstairs bathroom for the disabled, they were thrilled. First Street needed another place that peddles kid’s candies at its point of sale, while proudly serving the late night munchies of the tipsy collegiates across the street at Bar. The merciful market will speak on this one, as the owner’s Mr. Wilson School of no eye contact customer service will ignite the Darwinian reaction of consumer euthanasia.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I knew it was coming. That some poor sappy business would make me break my long standing media policy regarding hit pieces. Now I can’t say I’ve never done this. Hit piece spoiler alert! The third location of a certain recently opened sushi franchise in my beloved Southtowne Crossing Shopping Center (home to fast diabetes food meccas Doughboys, Jack in the Box, Quiznos, KFC, Carl’s Jr. and the e-ville Starbucks), has bad everything: bad service, bad sushi and

Love .
I mean that not as a noun, not even as a verb, but as a command. Or, more poignantly, as a simple instruction for life. As a game plan with only one play. A game plan that should be tattooed, not taped, to your wrist.
L ov e i s s i m pl e . We confuse and distract ourselves with hundreds of strategies for happiness, for success, for control, for security, for life. When the answer is simple. Albeit, counter-intuitive. In our defense, this is probably because, while this one-worddirective may seem simple, somehow it is not. The reasons why are probably fodder for at least twelve months of essays, all by themselves. But I think it is mostly because we are fearful beings. No matter what we say or how we act. L ov e i s da ng e ro us . No matter the bravado. No matter the hours at the gym, the tattoos, the sexy clothes, the cadre of friends, the cool job, or the hipness of our hangouts. No matter the number of times we read these words, study them in books, pay teachers to tell us, repeat them in mantras, stack the pillows, clear our minds, burn the right incense. No matter our friend counts, the notches on the bedpost or the numbers in the bank. No matter our previous revelations. L ov e r e m e m b e rs . We forget. We lose faith. We doubt. We disbelieve. We call past successes flukes and focus only on failure. We begin again our strategies for survival. Yes, survival. We decide that all else is fool-hearted frivolity. That we need to spend less time watching the stars and more time watching our backs. 8 Reno Tahoe Tonight
We fall back into fear. Because fear is easy. Fear comforts us as it tell us lies. Fear gets our back, it says. Protects our hearts, it assures. Leads us not into temptation. Not to cliffs and falls. Fear teaches us lessons in letting ourselves be too free. Lest we forget again. Lest we let our hearts hold the reins again. Lest we lose our way. Again. L ov e k n ows t h e t r ut h . And the truth is not easy. The truth is not simple. Not courteous or kind. The truth is blinding in its beatitudes. Ruthless in its revelations. And above all, breathtaking in its beauty. And beauty, well, you know what that is. L ov e i s b e a ut y . In all its shapes and sizes. In all its gifts and grandeur. In its bliss and its barely believableness. In its understatement and its overwhelm. In its cruelty and its crystalline clarity. In its ability to break your heart and to save your life. With one swift stroke. Yes, it is true. The answer is simple. It is taking our own advice that is hard. Even as I write this, I must remind myself that it is true. Because I’m no different from you. And you’re no different from her or him. Which leads us back to the reason there is only one rule. L ov e i s ev e ry w h e r e . Yes, I mean literally everywhere. As in not figuratively. As in you need only reach out and your fingers will touch it. As in take a step forward and you can’t help but bump into it.
Thomas Lloyd Qualls
As in open your mouth and some of it will come out. As in open your heart and some of it can’t help but spill inside. And so why aren’t we all just constantly swimming around in blissful revelations of beauty and self-awareness and fulfillment? Well, because.
instruction is simple. And yes, acting on it takes a little more. A little more courage. A little more faith. A little better memory. A little thicker skin. But in the end, what is required is the willingness to let love have its way with you. Or as Mr. Kravitz so artfully taught us. L et lov e r u l e .

Sometimes this simple directive to love is hard to follow, sometimes it’s easy. But whatever action you take, if you do it with your heart open, that is enough. That will change the results. It will change your reaction. And it will change your experience. Of yourself. Of others. Of your whole damn life.

Love is not being foolish or naive, not shirking from who you are, not being afraid to use your voice. Love is showing up, reaching out, standing in your gifts, sharing your vision, connecting, being open. And as you probably already know, doing these things is both wonderful and terrifying. “Ring of Fire,” a musical based on the music of American singer-songwriter, Johnny Cash, will appear in the Eldorado Showroom February 7 through May 4. The production uses 38 of his songs to celebrate the essence of an American experience. Rather than presenting the songs chronologically, the show is divided into four parts: Boyhood Years, Opry and Fame, Dark Years, Redemption and Celebration– which gives the audience the chance to see the influence that Cash’s life experiences played in the creation of his music. Featuring a cast of six principles paired off to make three couples at various stages of life, the Cash lyrics conjure life experiences that are then applied to the characters.
Performances run nightly, except Mondays, starting February 7the with showtimes Tuesday and Friday at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets prices start at just $24.95 with dinner and show packages from only $38.95. Community Talk Radio
Talk radio is morphing into multi-platform communication, both in live and pre-recorded forms, and America Matters Media is at the cutting edge. Accelerated by advances in internet services and data storage technologies over the last decade, Chip Evans traditional conservative, liberal, news and sports “talk” is finding new audiences and becoming more impactful. The industry journal, “Talkers Magazine” has even updated it’s tagline to "The Bible of Talk Radio and the New Talk Media" to reflect this new reality.
W
hile most people think of their favorite music when you mention radio, the “talk” format continues to thrive relatively unchanged – an entertaining host interviewing guests and responding to listener questions on a particular topic. What has changed substantially is the number of online venues and platforms for live streaming and podcasts. No longer does listening to talk radio mean just turn on your radio! So, sure, anybody can listen to radio on their computer or on their smartphone using the TuneIN Radio app or by selecting a podcast on iTunes, but the killer combo for talk radio is to couple these venues with a live, old-time terrestrial broadcast. Reflective of AMM’s pursuit of being the “Home of Community Radio”, one or more terrestrial signals represent the most immediate and direct paths to engage our local community. The other formats are terrific bonus opportunities! Online streaming extends the range of our shows to all corners of the world, creating what I call “communities of choice”, but our live shows on KRNG 101.3FM and replays on KKFT 99.1FM give us the power to engage and positively affect our Northern Nevada neighbors. AMM’s programming is unique in our market. Our shows span a wide range of topics including sports, entertainment, politics, business, community affairs, health, parenting, investing and money management, veterans’ issues, real estate, the law, addiction/recovery, food and drink, employment help, women’s’ issues, Nevada tourism, wild Mustangs and more. Our goal is to give voice to our community’s interests and concerns, even giving competing ideas and thoughts a forum for expression and debate. Thus our tagline, “a million points of thought.”
The advancing technologies and communitybuilding focus are interesting but who actually listens to talk radio? “Talker’s Magazine” conducted “The Talk Radio Research Project 2013TM” profiling listeners of the format
The Nevada audience is likely to vary somewhat. nationwide.
• Roughly 80% are 35 or older • 58% are male • 61% are white • 70% have been to college • 87% have annual household incomes exceeding $30K, 41% over $50K • 42% of talk listeners identify themselves as conservative or ultra conservative, 21% moderate and only 13% liberal. The political philosophy statistics present an interesting chicken and egg question – are there few liberal talk shows because few liberals listen to radio or are there few liberal listeners because there are so few liberal talk shows? They probably simply represent the desires of station owners. No matter your age, income, ethnicity or political bent, talk radio is a valuable asset. It brings a community together through a shared knowledge of what’s going on and the people involved. To have a powerful, multi-media platform like America Matters Media to facilitate our local public dialogue is a gift worth cherishing and taking advantage of, so make a plan to join us on one of our programs soon! Bluff Caller Record Release February 16, 2014 @ The Knitting Factory
Special Guests The Apprentice, Naked For Safety, The Bonfire Set and CRVSH
- - Hosted by KRZQ’s Chris Payne - Bluff Caller If the walls of the basement catacombs of the Reno Knitting Factory could talk, oh the stories they would tell. After playing host to the likes of Willie, Lemmy, Questlove and many more since their debut in 2010, the venue has quickly earned its reputation for legendary live shows with music industry royalty.
O
n November 26, I found myself in the subterranean offices of Knit General Manager Cisco Flores, a veteran of the Hollywood Knitting Factory where I booked shows from 2001-2003 in their split-level 711 capacity venue on Hollywood Boulevard while with Sean Healy Presents, LA’s pay-to-play indie kingpin. Seated in Flores’ office when I arrive is KRZQ’s Chris Payne, Reno’s most popular radio personality--and arguably it’s most knowledgeable music aficionado. I’m there to solicit a date for a little-known, but fast-rising local group named Bluff Caller, the four-piece musical love child of talented musician Cody Rea. A week earlier I had met with Rea
14 Reno Tahoe Tonight
at a south Reno Starbucks to speak about Bluff Caller’s upcoming release “The Jungle Academy.” Rea wanted me to help position the record and promote their release show. I told him that if the music sucked, I would have to tell him straight
away. He assured me it didn’t suck and gave me the disc, which was in a janky sleeve with eight song titles crudely scrawled on it. I went back to the vehicle and thought OK here goes. I popped the record in my CRV’s CD player, and it proceeded to quite literally dominate my life. The first time I played the track “Knowing That I’m Leaving” on my radio show, we got instant phones and all the women in the station swooned.
is followed by another standout, the rhythmically propulsive “Keys Wallet Phone.” Track six, “Gorgeous Savage” is a super sexy and seductive track that will inspire lovemaking when played in close quarters for that coed you’re finally alone and tipsy with; and the closing cut “Knowing That I’m Leaving,” which kinda reminded me of Michael Jackson’s “She’s Out of My Life” for its confessional tone and vulnerability.
Ecstatic to give Flores a listen, I Bogart he and Payne’s meeting and hand Flores the CD. Payne has been an early Bluff Caller supporter and has high praise for the group. At my behest, Flores plays track six “Gorgeous Savage” my favorite cut on the upcoming EP. Flores is impressed. Referring to the EP, Payne says, “This record; there’s so many layers to it. It’s unbelievably good. These guys are the real deal.” Flores chimes in, “They’re really good. If they wanna make it they need to get out of Reno and get to LA.”
Bluff Caller’s record release party on Sunday February 16 (the day before the President’s Day federal holiday and school is out!) is going to be quite an event, with an eclectic lineup of genreblurring acts that includes the hip-hop poetics of local favorite Apprentice, who will also be doing a world premier of his new video; Naked For Safety one of the region’s most respected indie bands; The Bonfire Set, alt folk rockers who recently brought a near capacity crowd to Bodega Nightclub, and the popular trio CRVSH, who have sold-out the Knit twice with their compelling blend of electronic inflected pop rock. Presale tickets are available at the Cal Neva box office, the Knitting Factory website (http://re.knittingfactory.com/event/?id=3988084) and ticket web www.ticketweb.com.
The fuss over Bluff Caller is deserved. Influenced by bands like My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, M83 and Led Zeppelin, their sound reflects the polyglot of musical inspirations that many young musicians are steeped in today. Hip-hop, psychedelic roots, soul and classic rock influences pepper the EP. Reminding me at times of Kings of Leon, Dispatch, Gavin DeGraw and Dave Matthews, Bluff Caller’s music cannot be pigeonholed conveniently. The group exhibits sweet two and three-part harmonies and a swaggering sensuality that’s refreshingly blunt and immediately palatable because of its authenticity. The listener knows that this is how kids think, speak and communicate these days. Street slang, PG-13 vulgarity, seduction and coded speech are folded into percussive triplets (Dominic Kelly on drums), sustained bass chords (Cody’s brother Greg Rea on bass) and dirty melodic guitar figures (guitarist Spencer Mead who doubles on keys), showing off the group’s considerable musicianship, while keeping ears dialed in to the coolness.

CRVSH
Recorded, engineered and produced impeccably by Jake Seaver of BetaSound in Reno and mastered in LA by Joe Gastwirt, Bluff Caller’s The Jungle Academy has a sonic balance that few young groups achieve in their early recordings. A onelisten record in industry parlance, it’s Cody Rea’s remarkable vocal tone that’s the glue here, as the front man manages to sound sensitive (on the track “Knowing That I’m Leaving” Rea damn near channels James Blunt), gangsta, strident, familiar and completely original all at the same time. The tracks on The Jungle Academy are all killer no filler, but I have my faves. The hip-hop inflected burner”90’s Kids” kicks off the record strong and Reno Tahoe Tonight 15

Personal Inventory January has come and gone. Have your good intentions for the New Year done the same? If so, you’re not alone, and IT’S OK! You are enough just the way you are. The good news is that we humans have the ability to recreate ourselves and start anew in every moment. We can choose to take a deep breath, let go of the past or our expectations, and connect to the source. We can find our breath and within moments evoke a whole new perspective and peace of mind. There are many different techniques that can be used to quiet the mind and check in; unlike a computer, we have many different ways to reboot.
T
aking a personal inventory can be a daily, weekly or monthly practice of checking in. I recommend that you sit somewhere quiet and write with intention. First, the good things that you have done for the day/week/month; then those things that you could have done better; and lastly how they could be improved. Take this time and don’t judge or grade yourself. When you check in and see how you’re doing according to your own standards, you can clarify your objective and actively stay focused on that objective. Breathing is probably the single most effective tool for reconnecting with yourself and your source. There are countless breathing techniques that can instantly lower your heart rate and bring about a sense of calm--even amidst the noise and craziness in the world. To sit without an agenda and rest in non-doing can be a very challenging and difficult thing for many of us, and yet it can be one of the most fruitful actions we take on the journey of self-exploration and discovery.
Rachelle Lanning
When we sit, stand, or walk in a meditation practice without the expectation of reward, but settle into the full experience of what we’re doing in the moment, we’re no longer projecting into a non-existent future for a preferred ideal or outcome. We’re not trying to have a vision or mystical experience, though this does happen with some people who have a consistent practice. Nor are we trying to numb ourselves from our pains by escaping into the dark cave of unconsciousness. What we’re doing in this approach is freeing up energy from our expectations, fixations, and ideas of what we think meditation is or isn’t, what’s supposed to happen or not happen, and allowing that energy to be used as a bridge of sensitivity to a deeper, more intelligent awareness where the meditator dissolves into pure meditation. The soul craves recollection of its own silent nature. This kind of practice, if done consistently as part of our daily lives, gives us a more authentic, personal, and intimate understanding of our relationship to each other and this world, that isn’t based on second hand information gathered outside of ourselves. The door of knowledge is inside of us, all we need to do is knock.

DJ Trivia at 1864 Tavern DJ Trivia is a fun, live, interactive game involving you, your team, other teams and a live DJ Host. The environment is entertaining and engaging, helping the game to quickly earn a loyal following of trivia buffs and social drinkers—mostly twentysomethings--but the night I went to the Wednesday Night DJ Trivia hosted by Musni and DJ Jake Harper at 1864 Tavern there was a good generational mix. I spoke with Musni in an email interview to find out more about DJ Trivia.
Oliver X: It’s rare that a new bar game catches fire at venues so fast. Describe the premise and game rules for DJ Trivia and explain why folks love it so much. Vickie Musni: Everyone plays in teams (no more than 10 players max per team) and every question is from a different category so there is something for everyone. Categories can be anything from sports to history to geography to pop culture. A game consists of 4 rounds; each round is 4 questions plus a “bonus” where teams have a chance to wager their points, and possibly double their score each round. Each question also has a song that goes with it, often containing a clue as to the correct answer. People love DJ Trivia because it’s fun, it’s social, and they get to use their brains while potentially winning money off of their bar tab! Oliver X: How did you come up with the idea of DJ Trivia? Vickie Musni: I wish I could say this was my brain child, but DJ Trivia is actually a national company and we bought in to become the affiliate for Washoe County. We met one of the owners of the parent company on a cruise and played a game with our cruise group and knew this was something we wanted to bring to Reno. Oliver X: Great crowds and great retention is the dream formula for bar owners. Talk about the benefits that DJ Trivia brings to purveyors of fine food and spirits in Reno and Sparks. 30 Reno Tahoe Tonight

Vickie Musni: We work with local bar owners and specifically target a typically slow night and then we come along and provide the perfect “excuse” for people to go out on a weeknight. It doesn’t usually take long for each venue to develop groups of regular players. Each week new teams usually end up staying to play just to see what it’s like...and then they come back the next week with more teammates and it just keeps growing. We help get people in the door, and the bars and restaurants sell more food and drinks because teams are there for two hours on a night that used to be slow. Oliver X: I was surprised to hear that many 32 Reno Tahoe Tonight
players go to more than one event per week. This game is addicting and each time a person plays, it’s a new experience. Vickie Musni: Leagues actually just started in January so teams can earn bonus points now for playing at multiple locations. Each team has a “home” location and at the end of 14 weeks we will have playoffs where the top teams from each venue will compete against each other. Believe it or not, the same game is played in every DJ Trivia location nation-wide on the same day, and then those questions go out of circulation for 9 months. Having fresh content every day is part of what keeps people coming back. But each location
Check out DJ Trivia at these locations: has its own DJ Trivia host, and the game will take on a different “feel” at each location based on the unique personality of the bar, and its players. Tribute to "The Hazards of Love"
Event
Returns to Reno
Text Rory Dowd Image Dave Cherry Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor is proud to announce that they will be hosting The Juxtaposeurs in their tribute production of “The Hazards of Love” by The Decemberists. The Juxtaposeurs will be reprising their well-received tribute on February 6-8 and Friday, February 14, Valentine’s Day. “The Hazards of Love” is a story-based concept album by the acclaimed Americana band, The Decemberists, chronicling a tale of love, magic, betrayal and transcendence. In their tribute, The Juxtaposeurs combine live music with movement and dance, bringing this narrative to life. Complete with fantastical creatures, villainy, love and blood, but no rhetoric, “The Hazards of Love” tribute will touch the hearts of even the most jaded theater-goers. Organized by Producer and Director, Jill Marlene, and conceived by Assistant Directors Gabe Hilton and Kaitlin Oki, The Juxtaposeurs first staged this show in the fall of 2010 for a short run. The response to the six sell-out performances was overwhelming, leading Marlene, Hilton and Oki to revive it for Reno audiences once again. This tribute to The Decemberists will feature many returning cast members and musicians, as well as new faces. The musical cast will include the talents of Music Director Chris Nelson, musician Mac Esposito, and vocalist Margy Ford among many others. Leading stage roles are assumed by the acting and movement talents of Scooby Meredith, Andrea Sullivan, Sarah Johnson and Rory Dowd. Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor is just one of many community sponsors facilitating this tribute production.
Typically a venue for live bands, the all-new Jub Jub’s Showroom will be hosting a stage production for the first time. The event is all-ages and will begin at 7:30pm for all performances except the Sunday matinee at 2pm. Advance tickets are available at The Melting Pot on South Virginia or Prism Magic on Pyramid Way for $12. All tickets are $15 at the door. Steampunk attire is encouraged for all audience members, but is not required. Reno Tahoe Tonight 35

Valentine’s Couples Workshop February 15, 2014 @ Gerber Medical Clinic 1225 Westfield Avenue 2nd Floor Text and photo courtesy of Lisa A. Rizzoli and Laz Daka What is a Tantra Sacred Loving Workshop? Tantra Sacred Loving workshops are presented with the intention of creating a safe space for individuals to explore their sexuality and spirituality through a variety of practices in the realms of Authentic Communication, Nurturing Touch and Sacred Connection. The Valentine’s Couples Workshop is specifically designed to enhance, strengthen, and improve a couple’s intimacy through the modality of Tantra techniques. Creating more juiciness in the relationship to expand and deepen the connection.
I
n the realms of Authentic Communication we will explore the 5 Love Languages described by Gary Chapman. These “languages” aid in the understanding of our specific mode of communication, how we feel heard and understood, and the communication of our partners. When we communicate with our partner in their love language, we step outside of ourselves to co-create an environment of LOVE. We learn compassion and empathy for ourselves and for others when we take a moment to remember the importance of LOVE in the relationship and to communicate in a more effective way with one another. Once we feel safe, heard and accepted with our partner we can be more vulnerable, honest, open and transparent with one another. Authentic Communication sets the stage for a more fulfilling, intimate relationship. Touch is a primary human need that often goes unmet or is given in a way that does not meet our needs and/or desires. In this workshop, we will explore Nurturing Touch as a way to connect with one another by adding energy and consciousness to our touch. This is a specific technique used
36 Reno Tahoe Tonight
to share with each other without the need to perform or act with a specific response. It allows us to go deeper into the love space and give freely of ourselves with the sole intention of bringing more love to our partner. Touching from the heart with compassion and empathy bring more connection into the relationship. Meditation, breath-work and visualization are some Tantra practices which bring Sacred Connection into a relationship. Becoming present, harmonizing our breath and our energy with our partners enables us to disconnect from the toils of the world and to connect fully with our partner and ultimately with the Divine. Bringing the Divine into our relationship enriches the LOVE bond and connection we feel for one another. Combining the intimacy of connection, the intensity of energy and the focus of intent allows a relationship to reach higher states of consciousness, companionship, and bliss. Couples need practices to stay connected and to make LOVE a priority, making time for one another and for the relationship. Join us February 15 and take your relationship from the realms of chemistry to transformative alchemy. Learn techniques to create more awareness in your relationship, to open new doors of intimacy and connection, and how to transform energy to have a more fulfilling life and partnership. Decadent Details I love to get dressed. Sometimes I can hardly sleep because I get so excited about how I am going to mix and match the pieces of my closet the following day. I believe I can make my day incredible and inspiring just by dressing the part. When we show the world we feel fabulous on the outside we reap the reward of feeling fabulous on the inside. I play dress up all of the time. I never wear the same thing the same way twice. I am a firm believer that accessories and texture are the keys to creating an envious look.
T
his time of year can be very taxing on the fashionista that lives inside of me. Will I be cold? Will it be hot once the sun is out? If I need to peel off a layer, will I still look stylish? I stick to neutrals in my wardrobe so it makes it easy to pull an outfit together quickly, but this can be extremely boring if I do not bring any texture in to play. Fashion is about confusing the senses just as the weather in Nevada can confuse the body. The real key to couture is mixing it all with confidence. This season teases us with glittering fringe with a western twist, a fabulous flock of feathers in an otherwise conservative look, a rebellious rocker softened by fuzzy fur, a mash up of feathers and sequins in pale pinks and creams or a couture collar filled with layers of fabric and sparked with jewels. Here are three tips for you to try this month. 1. Mix your holiday sequin skirt with a chunky cable knit sweater. Add some heathered tights, flat riding boots and large hoop earrings and you have flipped your night to day. Going for drinks after work? Stash a clutch and heels in your car for a quick change from day to night.
40 Reno Tahoe Tonight
Swipe on some red lipstick and you can play till the sun comes up.
2. Add a little western flair to a sparkly dress. Think opulent fabric with a worn leather belt and heavy metal buckle. Throw on some cowboy boots and line dance your way through the day. 3. Give your daytime denim some gorgeous glamour by pairing them with decadent fur. If you are not into real fur, the faux options are endless this season and you will be able to wear them into the spring months. Think skinny jeans, a button up shirt, leather booties and piles of metal jewelry. Throw a mid-thigh length fur over the top and instantly you are high style. Now go try on something fabulous and show the world your sparkle! Isha Casagrande is a fashion stylist who has a passion for fashion and a love for shopping. “Come fly fly with with us!” us!” “Come – Lina Maria, Reno Aerial Artistry
C
hildren dream of flight. Of that gravity defying weightlessness that our friendly foul clearly take for granted. Aerial artist Lina Maria knows the freeing feeling and exaltation of flight. Her show-stopping performances (on silks and Lyra) high above her audiences--as founder and lead performer of The Siren Society--have thrilled sold-out crowds at major venues all over northern Nevada. Now the general public, children and adults alike, can learn from Maria’s masterful command of aerial artistry. In an era of ever shrinking physical education activities in our public schools, it is refreshing to see parents bringing their children to this elegant and challenging art. A more supple form of gymnastics, the gorgeous and graceful aerial exercise builds core and upper body strength, stamina, discipline and flexibility. Like a slow motion airborne ballet, the movements are precise, fluid and breathtakingly beautiful.
52 Reno Tahoe Tonight
I visit the limber, diminutive artist at her class session, where a mother and daughter pair are learning the basic and intermediate rudiments of aerial silks, hanging twenty-eight feet from the ceiling of Crossfit Sierra Nevada, Reno’s largest Crossfit gym, located off West Fourth Street near Patagonia in West Reno. Oliver X: Talk about how you started and the training you have had in the art form. Lina Maria: About five years ago, I took my daughter to a tumbling class at High Sierra Gymnastics, i saw fabrics hanging from the ceiling and found out they offered classes there. I started taking classes and became completely obsessed! I bought my own equipment, started training almost every day and then became a teacher. I formed a performing group called The Siren Society that consists of aerialists, dancers, fire spinners and musicians. I started performing a lot and found the need to start my own aerial

program in collaboration with the very talented Heather Foltz, who is incredibly innovative and has created amazing partner sequences with her sister Dana Foltz--bringing new and exciting tricks and poses to the art form. Our newest teacher Jole Rector is a yoga teacher and actively participates in acro yoga, she is also a pro at aerial partner sequences! Oliver X: What you do is a lot like gymnastics. When should parents start their children in this kind of training and what are the benefits for kids? Lina Maria: I like to start children in our after school kids program at age 7. It’s amazing to see these kids build confidence, gain strength, flexibility and grace, learn how to focus and follow directions, make friends and have fun! Oliver X: Describe what happens in one of your typical classes.
Lina Maria: We start class with a warm up that will consist of a variety of cardio exercises, then we move on to a good stretch session that is similar to beginners yoga, then we do a few strengthening exercises on the fabric and lyra ( aerial hoop ) and then its play time!! We finish up class with a cool down that involves strengthening the hands, arms and core and then a mini massage to reward our hard working muscles. All adult classes are an hour and a half long and kid’s classes are an hour. $15 first adult class and $10 first kid’s class. Reverse Aging Cleanzology
Text Gertie OK
Additional Text Diane Underwood
Reverse Aging is a collaborative of super amazing spa energy devices that help many intelligent people cleanse, relax and energize all at the same time! The wellness spa is in a cozy craftsman home on Wells Avenue. The mystical house is loaded with everything needed to cleanse, such as aromatherapy, medical grade infrared saunas, ionized water, whole body vibration devices, spinal alignment machines, massage equipment, foot reflexology zappers, filtered showers as well as a superfoods pharmaceutical free health shop.
T
he upstairs floor has three infrared sauna rooms that are fully equipped with alkaline water, salt lamps, diffusers, books, games, DVDs, meditation CDs, crossword puzzles, computer tables--even WiFi and Netflix is available to keep guests entertained. Some saunagoers get online to work on their computers, while others read study, meditate or, get this, watch a DVD while sweating out the cellular pollution as a true holistic cleansing experience for modern times. Country boys, city girls, the elderly to infants all comfortably nestle under one roof to do mainly one thing: feel better. This unique sanctuary has pleasant undertones of medicinal essences of aromatherapy, including lavender, eucalyptus, frankincense, thyme, lemongrass, and cinnamon to name a few, which permeate throughout the home. Spa owner Diane Underwood says that the pure oils offer our brain some clean and clear information, an alternative to the normal neurotoxins we are exposed to daily. Underwood encourages you to BYOB (bring your own (water) bottle)! Negative ions are holistically pumped throughout the spa with different modalities, but without the use of ozone to keep the germs, dust and air pollution at bay.
The aromatherapy may help with pain, relaxation, oxygenation, lung function, circulation, colds, energy and mother earth. The focus is on brain function and brain food but the owner feels too much time explaining the benefits puts most people on overload. The spa’s drinking water is negatively ion charged, magnetized, electrocuted, purified, is filtered to a 54 Reno Tahoe Tonight
.01 micron and is delicious. It is supposedly super energizing, alkalizing and hydrating. In other countries alkaline water systems are mainstream and considered medical devices. The electrocution breaks up the clusters and zaps the viruses, parasites and microbes--most people are unaware that the critters exist in our drinking water. The concepts are not mainstream, but science does back these natural approaches. Underwood believes if we were all doing more raw foods and juicing we wouldn’t need such high doses of pH water. But most of us are eating cooked food, which is super acidic and pretty close to dead food. Therefore ingesting more non GMO, live, organic, vegan, and energized food might be a promising method for pH balancing, digestive issues, cognitive function, pain, and hormonal balance needed due to high acidity. Infrared sauna veteran Underwood says that the medical grade infrared saunas are the most-used modality at her spa. Reverse Aging’s saunas are made in the US. The wood is sustainably harvested aspen. The heaters are solid ceramic stones like Native Americans use in their sweat lodges. Underwood states, “Infrared sauna-goers should be weary of the newest trend of saunas coming in from China labeled as “carbon.” The polycarbonate (plastic) heaters are actually old waterbed heaters and made of epoxy glues and fiberglass which are well-known carcinogens.” Underwood’s been training physicians professionally since 2002 on how to utilize infrared saunas properly for optimal results. A multi-modality-tasker, Underwood wants to offer the purest products to facilitate the best cleanse via the skin through perspiration. Sweating in a radiant infrared sauna also has the ability to
cleanse the blood, lymph, liver, kidneys, glands and skin--which is our biggest organ. If we are excreting neurotoxins from sweating, maybe there is some room for some brain food. PubMed.gov studies suggest “repeated” thermal therapy has shown to be activating and stimulating to the immune system by a hyperthermia effect. Raising the body core temperature even if it is artificially induced may stimulate more T-cell, natural killer cells, white blood and red blood cell production via heat shock protein activity to ward off invaders. Infrared saunas and hyperthermia may be a promising method for many chronic issues including pain, osteoarticular diseases, heart conditions, nervous system issues, obesity, depression, hypertension etc. This place has a balanced twist of everything that has to do with pure cleansing. Sweating goes hand in hand with mineral depletion. All of Reverse Aging’s products are bioavailable, such as their minerals from petrified kelp, triple purified water, and a laser beam! Mineral replacement is a serious concern for sauna-goers. Instead of the chemical fizzy pharmaceutical chemistry of non bioavailable synthetic beverages known as energy or electrolyte drinks, the spa’s focus is on bioavailable brain food. “If we are excreting neurotoxins out of our cells--especially repeatedly-maybe we are making room for nutrients?” Underwood emphasizes. For people interested in a very detailed cleanse, a customized five minute “Compass” reading suggests directions on essential oils for each person’s specific needs. The Compass is set up for all members to use at their convenience, like everything else in the spa.
Reverse Aging is open 24/7 for clients that invest in cleansing spa passes. Wow, a place that lets clients use what they want, when they want, with no pretentiousness? The vision was created in 2000 after the health conscious spa owner Underwood claims she was health challenged with many conditions that she has successfully completely reversed. The biggest claim is turning around her pain and auto-immune disease Rheumatoid Arthritis suggested by her nutritionist. Underwood shared her personal home sauna with anyone open to cleansing. The miraculous sauna had amazing deep healing powers that naturally encouraged her to open a business. Underwood enjoys sharing her knowledge with everyone in her path, many of which were skeptics that disliked traditional saunas. Light therapy is now a universally known modality--especially overseas. Many cultures have been sweating out toxins for thousands of years. On the first introductory three hour session, every device is offered so one can pick and choose their favorites if they decide to invest in some quality cleansing time. All ages are welcome. It really is an awaking warp speed cleansing experience for intelligent people that know the wealth of their well-being. http://www.ReverseAgingNaturally.com

Take 2 Performers Studio trains and develops actors for television and film and provides career guidance. The facility,
run by Owner/Talent Director Justine Reyes and Acting Director Waters—both wellknown and respected industry veterans--is serious business: no mincing of words or pussy footing around here. The curriculum the students get at Take 2 is the caliber of instruction you would find in major cities like New York, Chicago and LA.
Walking into the spacious offices of Take 2 studios in South Reno, I’m immediately struck by the energy generated by the ambitious throngs of students anxiously awaiting the start of their class sessions There’s a palpable buzz in the foyer, as adults, parents, grade-schoolers and teens bustle about, practice their lines and tune their instruments. Waters puts her students through their paces. Practice makes perfect and the class participants work hard to hone their crafts in classes covering disciplines that include acting/improvisation, modeling, singing, jazz and dance. The committed efforts of students and staff have helped propel Take 2’s talented alumni to breakthrough success:

Bring your personality when you show up, don’t leave it at the door. The training here teaches that acting is a team sport. Meaning you always want to look for the greater good. So if it’s a film, play or screenplay, your part and contribution to that screenplay is important. It’s not you doing what you want with it and being the star and ignoring everybody else. It is a team sport and a wonderfully collaborative spiritual thing if you will. I love the training of an actor. Acting training teaches you to suit up and show up no matter what. We say in theater that the show must go on. So it’s not our job to flake at the last minute and say I can’t. There’s no I can’t here. I don’t even allow people to say ‘I can’t’ here in the studio. You can’t say ‘I can’t’ and you can’t ask ‘Do I have to?’ I say ‘No, but you get to.’ If you can put two words together and walk and talk you know it’s a blessing. So be grateful and embrace what you can do and stop saying the things that you can’t do, because that not true. What I love about acting is that it’s about doing. It’s not about thinking, it’s about doing. On the set the director is our boss and what do they do? They direct. They give us direction. What’s our job? Do it. Don’t think about it; don’t question it—just do it! That’s why improvisational training is so important to get actors to think on their feet and to make it work no matter what. And that’s our job: to make it work no matter what for the greater good. So we do a lot of improvisation and theater games in my classes as well. I teach the Sandy Meisner method acting from Stanislavski. It’s my basis and my core. It’s not scary. All it really means is this one simple thing: Tell the truth in the imaginary world. That’s all it is. So in your imaginary world your audience isn’t in it. The casting people aren’t in it. The director’s not in it and the camera crew isn’t in it. In that imaginary world you tell the truth. So if I say to you ‘Your feet are on fire,’ you go ‘Ouch! Hot! Hot! You don’t go, ‘No they’re not.’ In your improv or in your actual scenes or memorized work that you do, you go with it within the confines of that truthful place. If I’m in an audition and I have a cup of coffee that I’m bringing to my face I might pull back from the mug and touch my nose and 60 Reno Tahoe Tonight
say ‘Oh, the steam got me.’ You keep that moment and use it. You don’t have it go away and reappear. Cause that gets your audience in their heads. I will tell you the place not to be as an actor is to put people in their heads. That’s a bad neighborhood. Stay away from there. If you’re in your head, you’re not in your heart. RTT: Why do you think so many shy people gravitate towards acting? Waters: Because they don’t want to be shy anymore. They know it’s not serving them. They may not know it on a real conscious level, but on a primitive level they know that.

Trickle Down Yelponomics As a web designer and consultant of all things web-related, Yelp comes up in many client conversations. My favorite goes like this: Client: Why don’t I have more Yelp reviews? Me: Not sure; but while we’re discussing it, when was the last time you wrote a Yelp review? Client: Who me? Oh, I’ve never done that before. The concept is simple: to increase the odds of getting a positive Yelp review, you have to put some love into the Yelponomy. Most folks in Reno are not yet in the habit of Yelping. Just like in the early days of an economy where the first dollars spent have the most impact, your Yelp review now has the power to make or break a business. They say that every star, up or down, can indicate a 5-7% change in revenue. If you’re one of the first customers to try out a restaurant, plumber or graphic artist, taking the time to leave a Yelp review will give that business a chance at success. We want successful locally owned and operated businesses, right? And, more importantly, we want dollars to come from outside the Reno area. Travelers are in the habit of relying on Yelp to make decisions. When we, as locals, direct tourists to a new breakfast joint, a custom clothing boutique, or an underground art gallery, we are giving the small businesses an edge over the national franchises, big boxes, and casinos. 64 Reno Tahoe Tonight
Maybe this talk of the economy sounds too risky to you; I mean, who knows if you’ll ever really see any karmic benefits from writing about your patronage observations. One of the philosophies at Waking Girl Web Design is always have multiple reasons for a design choice. We take the same approach with Yelp. How to get guaranteed results from posting a Yelp review Remember the days of the Thank You note? A tried and true sales and relationship-building technique, leaving a well-thought-out Yelp review is the modern way to initiate contact with a business owner. If you’re a business owner, you know how closely you pay attention to your reviews. What better way to give a business owner your face and name, than by trying out their services and leaving a review? I’m not saying to lie in your review, or to hold your review hostage until you get your ransom. I’m saying: go, enjoy, try out a business or service. If you love it, and maybe someday want to do business with the staff, owner or fellow customers— review it! And make it a good one! Ok, I’m sold, but how do I leave a Yelp review? Go to Yelp.com, click Sign Up, use Facebook as your
login, and then use the friendly search bar at the top to find a venue to review. Do not review your own business or a place you work for. Read through some reviews and observe what is Useful, Cool or Funny (go ahead, vote!). The more useful a review, the more likely it will show up at the top. Now, go ahead and Write a Review! There is a good chance that your first review will be filtered. Don’t be discouraged; just be mentally prepared! Yelp uses fancy algorithms to get an idea of whether a review is legitimate or not. As tempting as it may be to get angry and give up, hang in there. Yelp is fairer than Equifax and Transunion—and yet I don’t hear anyone dismissing their credit score like they dismiss a bad review! I want frosting. Another Waking Girl philosophy is to get your cake, eat it, and then also lick the leftover frosting from the bowl. To take the Yelping concept to the next level, get your office, family, church or random Meet Up group on board with Yelping en masse. Political groups and flash mobs have shown us the power of not just one voice, but a choir of many. To rapidly boost your Yelponomy encourage all of your lunch guests to review the restaurant, or have a contest with your office mates to see who can write the most reviews each month, or get the most useful votes. Scott Horan, the operations manager at Caliber Salon & Spa refers to a marketing conference he attended, “What’s important to pay attention to nowadays is a person’s Social Score. It doesn’t matter how much money someone has, or how long they’ve lived in Reno—what matters is how connected they are on the web, and how much of an impact their review, their blog, their Facebook post might have on your potential customers.”
To get noticed by local businesses take the Wake up your Business Yelp Challenge: Review 10 of the following in the next 30 days! Post this checklist near your computer and get in the habit of Yelping! Pick the last place you visited or the last place that made an impression on you, and start writing!
□ Dinner Restaurant □ Breakfast/Lunch Restaurant □ Coffee shop □ Grocery Store/Co-op □ Bank/Accountant □ Post Office/Notary □ School/Preschool □ Theater □ Gallery □ Clothing Boutique □ Thrift Store □ Dog Trainer/Groomer □ Hair Salon/Nails/Waxing □ Massage Therapist/Yoga □ Outdoor Activity □ Indoor Activity □ DMV/Police Department □ Airport/Taxi □ Florist/Landscaping □ Class/Workshop □ Charity □ Music Venue/Bar □ Library/Book Store □ Property Manager/Real Estate Agent □ Physical Therapist/Clinic/Dentist

Help Softballer Autumn Alexander Get to Australia
M
y name is Autumn Alexander. I am a seventeen year old girl from Reno, Nevada and I currently play center and left field for both the local travel team (The NV Comets) and Varsity for Spanish Springs High School.
While at a tournament in Golden Eagle I was approached by the coach of the All-Star USA Softball Team and given the opportunity to travel to Australia with them this summer from June 14 to June 26. The roster will consist of only fourteen girls from around the United States and each of these players was selected because of the unique skills, character, and personality they possess. While in Australia I will spend four days playing in the 2014 Blacktown Softball Challenge Tournament at Blacktown Olympic Park in Sydney, Australia. The rest of the time I’ll be learning how to surf, swimming with dolphins, exploring the Gold Coast and getting close to many of the exotic animals found in the Australian Outback. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to both experience the diverse mix of cultures away from the United States, as well as expand my college resume. Playing in Australia would be a dream come true, not only because I’d get to go to Australia, but because I’d get to play the game I love more than anything in the world while being there. I have played some sort of softball my entire life and through all the struggles and changes that life has thrown at me, the game has always remained the same. Softball has become somewhat therapeutic for me. Every game I play, I play in remembrance of my mother. I don’t really remember her ever going to my 66 Reno Tahoe Tonight
softball games, but I also don’t usually pay a lot of attention to anything going on outside of the game while I’m playing it. When my mother committed suicide seven days after New Years in 2009, it killed me because death had taken my hero away from me. The one person I thought would always be there and I could always run to, was now missing from my life and I had no possible way of getting her back. Not only did I lose my mother that day, but I lost contact with half of my family--including a number of my siblings. Although the pain of their loss will always be there, I try not to focus on it because I know that they would not want me to live a life of pain and remorse. My mother was under the influence of meth and depression when she took her life, but before all that she was a fun-loving, incredibly beautiful woman and she left behind eight unbelievably beautiful children to carry on her legacy. I have gotten as far as I am because of such tragedies. I am the person I am because of the battles I was forced to fight, and I don’t regret any of it. I play my game in remembrance of the person my mother was--before the meth, before the sadness, and before the suicide--and I will continue to play no matter how hard it gets. Because I want to prove that I am not a replica of my mother and my future is going to be what I make of it. That is my message and I want the world to hear it! Because no matter what people think or expect out of you, for whatever reason, you are in control of your life and you can do anything if you are willing to work hard at it. If there is any way you could help support my cause and campaign to get to Australia, please go to my webpage: http://www.gofundme. com/594bvo. If you would like to know more about me, feel free to follow or message me on Facebook: Autumn Alexander.

Beaujolais Bistro’s New Location Last month, Reno’s favorite French bistro, Beaujolais, opened their doors at a new, riparian location on Riverside Drive. “We saw an opportunity to grow and redefine our mission in a vibrant new neighborhood,” says Chef and Owner Bill Gilbert. The interior of the converted early 20th century home was completely remodeled by Paolo Cividino of Tutto Ferro and features intricate metal and tile work, vast amounts of steel, hardwood floors, and the original brick throughout.
W
rapping around the dynamic, open kitchen is a zinc-faced bar made from a modified concrete similar to terrazzo that has birds’ egg granite and brick red agate embedded within. It was designed by Chapel Tavern’s Duncan Mitchell to provide the perfect French cocktail experience. In addition to Beaujolais’ staggering domestic and imported wine selection, the bar also features beer specifically chosen by Mitchell, who said, “I wanted to offer a combination of those that are local and easy-todrink with some more rare, challenging options, while always keeping in mind what will pair best with the food.” The cocktails served at the bar are a blend of old and new, “modernizations of the classics with a French twist.” In the new location, Chef Gilbert is excited to reimagine what the bistro’s been about for the past decade by offering a wider variety of delectable menu items. The goal is to create a balance between serving up a dining experience fit for special occasions and delivering everyday French to the surrounding community. “My true passion is preparing simple, classic cuisine,” professed Chef Gilbert, “and to provide an accessible French experience to locals every day.” And Reno’s taste buds thank him. Beaujolais Bistro is located at 753 Riverside Dr. in downtown Reno’s Powning District right along the Riverwalk. Open Tuesday through Thursday 5-8pm and Friday and Saturday from 5-9pm. Closed Mondays. 775-870-1990. 68 Reno Tahoe Tonight

JB Mapes Bistro and Jazz Lounge
JB Mapes continues to be the best kept culinary secret in Reno’s thriving downtown dining district—but not for long!
Located next to Campo, the Louisiana-themed bistro has a warm posh atmosphere, exquisite décor and some of this town’s most ambitious and flavorful comfort food. After a few turnovers in the kitchen, Hamilton appears to be dialed in quite nicely with Chef Scott Herlan, who prepared 72 Reno Tahoe Tonight
dishes for our shoot that were fantastically flavorful, well-executed and beautifully plated. I spoke to Hamilton about the evolution of the restaurant and what couples can expect at the bistro this Valentine’s Day.
Oliver X: JB Mapes went through an extensive interior remodel last year. What inspired the changes in decor? Beatrice Hamilton: I believe that in creating any business or new business idea it is never a “solo
journey. The inspiration to begin the remodel for JB Mapes Bistro and Jazz Lounge came to me by listening closely to trusted friends, customers and business associates. Their feedback and support of the new creation was vital to its completion and success! The bistro needed to Reno Tahoe Tonight 73
embrace a new identity; I knew that, but what direction to take? It was decided that a softer, quieter; a more intimate and sexy look would be just right. We needed a bar. The design of the full bar is fashioned after a location I personally visited in the French Quarter in New Orleans. It is magnificent in my opinion! As you enter JB Mapes Bistro, you can feel as if you are sharing a room with southern hospitality or that you stepped back into the old days of Reno; the days of the Mapes Coach Room with its plush carpet and crushed velvet. Community strengthens and JB Mapes Bistro is certainly a strong example of that. Oliver X: You have exceptional taste in interior design. Where did you source the gorgeous design elements and finishes? Beatrice Hamilton: The newly decorated interior required an incredible amount of research, vision and hard work! I found skilled craftsman that understood the dream and idea that I wanted. The room was to embrace a certain period in time and look of elegance without being too intimidating. Color and lighting were important to the new look. We chose a deep mauve color for the entry way with beautifully embellished floral stenciling. Faux alligator texturing was used on both sides of the bar as well as in both 74 Reno Tahoe Tonight
restrooms. The enlarged stage for performers is draped in luscious voluminous crushed velvet. The newly added brick helped to create the warmth and ambiance that we needed for the space. Two vignettes were created one large scale at the entrance to depict the elegance of the Mapes name the second a lovely scrolled designed over the kitchen entry window. Paintings were selected to highlight the room with a message of romance by Argentine painter Fabian Perez--all with a definite budget in mind, a most challenging aspect to any project! A plaque was designed to give credit to each craftsperson on the project which is located at the rear window of the bistro. Oliver X: Your menu has really evolved. What is your culinary vision for the restaurant? Beatrice Hamilton: Our culinary vision for the restaurant is for the menu to really be undefined, but to offer an eclectic variety of pleasing selections: Beef Wellington, Savory Cheese Cake Smoked Salmon Fettuccine among other numerous specialties. Scott Herlan started cooking at an upscale California Cuisine restaurant twenty-one years ago, spent time doing Mexican and Italian; apprenticed at one place that specialized in wild game and most recently at Adele’s in Carson City as Pastry Chef. Oliver X: JB Mapes is one of the most romantic

dining destinations in Reno. What are your special plans for Valentine's Day this month? Beatrice Hamilton: Valentine’s Day will be especially romantic at JB Mapes Bistro. Our menu will feature items that will be just perfect and tasty. Our music for that evening will be Jean Driver and Graham on the Saxophone. There is never a cover charge to enjoy a wonderful line-up of entertainment. For February at JB Mapes Bistro we welcome
Barbara Baxter Jazz vocalist, Keith Allen, Pat Curtis and John Palmore with Velvet; Jazz and Blues, Judith Ames Trio, “a little Latin, a little jazz”, Jonathan Barton Acoustic Guitar and vocalist, Paul Vandervoort, Pianist and vocalist, just to name a few. Our newly expanded cabaret stage sets the tone for a lovely backdrop for any musician to feel that they are in the right place. A special gift will be given to each lady. Three seatings will be offered: 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Reservations only-limited seating. Reno Tahoe Tonight 77

Review: Tournant Pop-up Restaurant December 31, 2013 @ Jungle Vino
D
ays later, when chefs Adam Bronson and Ben Deinken explain the painstaking process involved in creating their See Through Mushroom Broth, I feel guilt set in. When I was served this dish—the chefs unique take on a cream of mushroom soup—at Tournant’s inaugural event on New Year’s Eve I had no idea that I was corrupting a soup that involved three days of patient preparation. The dish was served in a small Mason jar, with a soft cream of foam resting atop a pristine amber consommé like billowing clouds settling in the sky. Chef Ben describes it as “like a pint of Guinness.” But, I now realize it is more like a work of art. The guilt sets in because at the time I couldn’t see that. I mixed up the cream and consommé and I slurped it down capriciously like a child. In a way, however, this is the very nature of food. It is temporal. Often one of the simplest, most immediate of pleasures. We can all agree that modern gastronomy mixes the qualities of art and 78 Reno Tahoe Tonight
science. But, gastronomical wonders are never meant to be admired for too long. They are single serving works of art. Works of art that represent a moment in time. And, when you get a meal that really knocks your socks off, the only thing that remains are the memories. It’s in this temporal spirit that Chef Adam and Chef Ben are trying to create their pop-up restaurant, Tournant. A pop-up restaurant is a restaurant which will only exist for one night. The chefs basically invade a different location (their New Year’s event was hosted at Jungle Vino), set up shop, and create a multi-course menu for the evening. Each course marked with a different cocktail pairing. As Chef Ben puts it, “You don’t know what you’re going to get, but it’s going to be great.” And there is a special feeling that you get when you are part of such a singular event. Though the menu items are familiar, they are prepared with the chefs’ individual touch, so that you get the
feeling you won’t be seeing items prepared like this on a menu anytime soon.
curiosity in the kitchen was evident in their presentation and preparation of the dishes.
Says Chef Adam, “We’re just trying to create an experience that sets us apart. We’re not reaching out to the tastes of the average palate.”
For instance, their take on steak and potatoes involved a thinly sliced pot roast, which was fused together with a special chemical, and wrapped in a Yukon Gold potato chip. So that it was presented as a delicious rectangular cube. It wasn’t only savory and delicious, but it was easy on the eyes as well.
They are hoping that each pop-up can be its own event. The meals come to you in tight knit courses that flow together like movements in a piece of music, and the cocktail pairings will accentuate each course. They want each event to have its own feel or mood, which they accomplish by also playing music and presenting artwork specific to the event. “We’re trying to stimulate all aspects of the senses,” says Chef Ben. At their inaugural event they went for a speakeasy motif. The music they played was predominantly jazz from the 20s and 30s, and they featured unique takes on classic cocktails of the time--engineered by Chef Ben’s wife. Most notably an infused fig bourbon on the rocks and a burnt orange gin fizz that tasted like what I image F. Scott Fitzgerald is sipping on in heaven. The artwork was provided by Bryce Chisholm, and the monochromatic portraits painted in a cold palate, helped reinforce the winter celebration. For these two classically trained chefs, this event was a breath of fresh air; an opportunity to stretch their creative muscles. As students they were constrained, as all eager students are, by academia. As real world chefs, they have also met with the professional constraint of satisfying management, as well as attracting a large clientele. As Chef Adam explains, “Some of these places I’ve worked had an esoteric vision they couldn’t put into words, so I had to guess how to present it to reflect the vision they wanted. If I had a vision of what I wanted on the menu, then it still had to pass a series of approval.”
With Tournant they have the freedom to experiment and play with food in a way that satisfies their creative interests, as well their customer’s appetites.
They stuck with familiar food to test the waters. Says Chef Ben, “we’re not San Francisco or New York where we can open up doors and be like ‘we’re gonna make crazy ass food, and people are gonna come.’” But, now that they have seen that Reno is perhaps ready for some culinary experimentation, they seem to be more willing to test the limits of where their brand of cuisine can go, as well as the palates of their clientele. Chef Ben elaborates, “It’s the molecular gastronomy that we really geek out on. It’s a modern age, why not use modern tools to make some cool shit happen. We’re talking about doing spherification of pomegranate juice. So, you put it in your mouth, and it instantly pops. It’s a liquid that encapsulates itself with itself.” Though, their end game is to eventually open their own restaurant, for the moment they seem content to be breaking new ground in the Reno food scene, which they hope will make a lasting mark on the community. Says Chef Adam, “It would be cool if this became a subculture. If this pop-up thing became an organic entity bigger than us.” “What we hope can happen is that when we can get our own brick and mortar, we can hand it off to the next generation. Maybe we can find a young, eager chef to take them over. It’s more of a mentorship,” adds Chef Ben. At this particular time, however, it still remains their moment. Their moment to create fleeting works of art that, though they stimulate our palates for only wisps of time, will resonate in our thoughts for years to come. As Chef Adam puts it, “It’s a time in America where chefs have their own voice. It’s a good time to be a chef.”
Though they were cautious their first go around with their menu choices, their playfulness and Reno Tahoe Tonight 79

Perking Up the Tired Buyer Text and photo courtesy of Shirley Larkins
Have you been longing to buy a house but keep striking out?
Does every house you want go to someone else? As a real estate professional, one of the worst situations to navigate has to be telling a buyer that the seller has chosen another offer. Especially if it is the 3rd, 4th even 5th time! If you have purchased a house in the last year, you may have run into this. Or maybe you are dealing with this very real situation right now. I would like to offer some advice that I use in my own business and with my clients when on the house hunt. 1. Communication is the key
- This means having your Realtor® find out as much information about the current status of the property as soon as possible. Then you know how to proceed if you want to make an offer. I am always upfront with my clients. If there are offers already on a property and we are still in the looking phase, I tell them. If, however, my clients know that this is “The One” then I let them know we better pull the trigger NOW and they must decide just how far they are willing to go to get the property and beat out the other offers.
2. Make it Personal - People like to know who
they are selling their home to. They also like to know why someone would want it. I think it is very critical to have a handwritten letter accompany every offer. Not only do I have my clients write a little background on themselves, but I also make sure that they tell the seller why their house is “The One”. Now the offer tells a story.
3. Be real about the market - In most cases,
under bidding doesn’t work right now. Though the market has flattened just a bit, it is not on the decline, and inventory is still low. If you are looking at houses you should be realistic about what you are willing to offer – and go in strong if you really want the house.
Of course there is a lot more that goes into the process. This is just a start. If you have real estate questions, or if you would like more tips, please shoot me an email or give me a call. We are in unique place in the local housing market and people need to be creative and think outside of the box to make real estate transactions happen. Ready For Battle | Eve To Adam Text Thee Reverend Rory Dowd
R
ock and roll has seen better days. The airwaves are dominated by generic EDM dance beats; empty, nonsensical lyrics and engineered personalities. Fueled by a steady diet of high-octane adrenaline and over-charged distortion, Eve To Adam aims to be the shot in the arm that real rock and roll needs to pick itself up and soldier on.
Eve To Adam is a heavy/hard rock band from New York City and has been touring extensively since 2010. “We love Reno,” says front-man, Taki Sassaris, enthusiastically. Eve To Adam passed through Reno at the end of 2012 with local crowd favorite, Halestorm. “We don’t get out to the West Coast enough, but… Reno is a town full of people who know how to party and come out for a rock show.” After their success in that tour, Eve To Adam went into the studio and banged out their full-length album, Locked and Loaded, which released during the summer of 2013. They immediately jumped back on the tour bus to promote the album extensively during the summer and fall. It’s just the beginning of the year and they’re at it again. “It’s all about live performance,” Sassaris explains, “not being on Facebook all day, saying what a good band we are. We’d rather just go out there and prove it.” So far, they seem to have the goods. Their singles “Straitjacket Symphony” and “Immortal” have made good showings in 2013, climbing the charts and getting a solid amount of airtime. Heavy guitar riffs and driven drumming punctuate Sassaris’s powerful vocals and impressive range. The music is aggressive and dramatic, with roots in 80s and 90s rock bands. Sassaris cites Guns and
Roses and Iron Maiden as influences, but there’s also a little Queensryche and Helmet in there too.
“Rock and roll is a war of attrition,” he explains, “you gotta prove yourself over and over again. You gotta stay alive. The battle will turn for you, but you just gotta stay alive.” Supported by 3 For 4 Records, as well as an active and growing fan base, Eve To Adam are positioning themselves to grab some real media attention through a heavy schedule of touring and performing. Before signing with 3 For 4, they were shameless self-promoters, working as an indie act, down in the trenches, doing all of their own booking, promotion, networking and all the other crap that goes along with being a working musician. Their hard-working ‘rock ethic’ is what sets Eve To Adam apart from all the other new rock bands out there, according to Sassaris, a singer with 20+ years behind a microphone. “People love our passion…. People are bombarded by all this information and bullshit and spin. I see all these big productions – but if you’re hitting it every night, you don’t need all the smoke and lights. There is nothing more powerful than a hard rock band firing on all cylinders. You can influence people and inspire them. And that’s what I believe in.” You can catch Eve To Adam with touring partners Escape the Fate and New Year’s Day at The Knitting Factory on Monday, February 17.

GOLD SEAM VINTAGE & ELATE COLLECTIVE Text Cody Doyle Photos Megan Matthers There aren’t a lot of places in Reno where you can find three very distinctive shops in one building. However, inside of Never Ender Boutique, you will also find two other shops – Elate Collective and Gold Seam Vintage. All of the shops are exclusive from one another; all of them offer clothing and other must-haves, yet all are completely unique.
G
old Seam Vintage, owned by Megan Matthers, is a carefully curated collection of vintage clothing and goods. The term “Gold Seam” is a mining reference to a bonanza of gold found in a rock bed. Megan equates her finds to striking gold. Matthers finds her inventory here in Reno and by her travels across the USA in her classic 1981Vanagon. You can follow her travels at goldseamvintage.com. Over the years, Megan started collecting vintage styles, and then one day she paused to ask herself why she needed to have so many. That is when her idea of opening a vintage retail shop sprung to life. When the opportunity arose in 2012 to rent space inside of Never Ender, she pounced on it. Megan tells me, “There are so few vintage stores in Reno it’s definitely important to keep the inventory fresh!” And that she does. For example, 2014’s calendar is identical to the 1975 calendar

– therefore she made sure to find 1975 calendars to sell. Only people like Megan, with a clear passion for vintage items, would even think of that. You can find Gold Seam Vintage on Facebook and Instagram. Elate Collective moved into Never Ender on November 1, 2013. Owned by Eric and April Soloman, the shop is a sister store to Elate Skate -- for the purpose of adding an apparel line to the skate board shop. All of Elate Collective’s items are 100% Eco-friendly and made only in the USA. The shop’s inventory consists mostly of whimsical and funky children’s clothing, but they have designs for adults as well, from tees to scarves. Elate Collective prides themselves on promoting local artists and designers who aspire to enhance their creativity through apparel. Only open for a little over two months, the store is catching on. You can find them on Facebook, as well as their online line store - www.etsy.com/shop/ ElateCollective. All three stores in one building makes for a rare and fun shopping experience. Come in and see us at 119 Thoma Street.
