After four previous ADDY wins for photographic contributions in our pages, Reno Tahoe Tonight has won an ADDY for our stunning September 2013 edition “Dark Moment” by gifted photographer Anicia Beckwith, conceived and directed by filmmaker Jonny B. Hicks and featuring the gorgeous model Arriauna Kidd. The issue was a stunner, and featured the photography of Beckwith, Chris Holloman, Bishop Bautista and the layout and page design of RTT Art Director Grae Warren. I am so proud of our team, led by Warren, and design associates Mike Robertson, Courtney Meredith, Kristine Palmer and Paula Campbell for achieving this peer and industry acknowledgment for their excellence. We are looking forward to the awards ceremony on March 7 at The Peppermill. Congratulations to the twenty four talented athletes from Reno-Tahoe who made it to this year’s Winter Olympic Games at Sochi Russia. Reno’s David Wise took home the Gold Medal for Men’s Ski Superpipe. I worked with Draper Strategies and Communications to do a feature on Wise in the January edition of RTT and we are so thrilled for him and his family. Wise has trained with Max McManus of MRI Fitness in south Reno for many years. Congrats and great work guys! Big props go out to the Bluff Caller crew who blew the doors off The Knit on a Sunday night last month at their record release party. The boys brought over 750 people to the event which included standout performances by Apprentice, Naked For Safety, The Bonfire Set and CRVSH. Special thanks go out to Cisco Flores, Michael Sinclair, Chris Payne, Preston Charles and Tricia Lobe at The Knitting Factory. Expect big things in the coming year from the humble quartet who seem poised for a promising career in music. Pick up Bluff Caller’s new EP titled The Jungle Academy on iTunes.
Two huge stories grabbed headlines as we went to press: Jason Collins became the first openly gay NBA player in the league after coming out last April 2013, and Michael Sam became the first NFL prospect to come out. I applaud these athletes for their courage to be who they are. BRAVO guys! March is full of great events and high on my list will be the Wig Out fundraiser on March 23 for our dear friend and RTT contributor Emily “Fabulous” Reese, who is battling colon cancer. The event features live music by Drinking With Clowns and much more and will be held at Sidelines in Sparks. If you read no other piece in this month’s issue, read the feature on Reese in these pages. You will be inspired, as we are, by her love, courage, bravery and joy. Thank you Emily for being such a shining example of the best of humanity and the human spirit. You are an amazing role model for your friends, family and loved ones and are a true inspiration to me as a human being. Catch Emily Fab Reese Thursday mornings from 9-10am with me on America Matters Media 101.3fm Renegade Radio and NEVER BE BORED! Reno Tahoe Tonight 7

Trust.
A fitting topic for March, what with the Ides and all. Fitting, too, for this little thing called life. Littered as it is with betrayal. Trust. As if you'd never been betrayed. There's a reason we still read Shakespeare after all this time. He understood that betrayals come in all forms. Betrayal of county, of friends, of family, of love and lovers, of yourself. If you are surprised by that last one, perhaps you haven't been paying enough attention.
Trust. As if you didn't know better. While we walk around guarding ourselves against every conceivable threat from the outside, most of us betray ourselves in small and big ways all day, every day. Mostly it's the little voice that we carry around inside us. The one that nags, criticizes, and unnecessarily narrates our lives all day long. (And all night for those insomniacs among us.) Once we turn on the light of awareness, we realize that all this listening we do to this sociopathic voice in our heads is exhausting.
Trust. As if you'd never been burned. We never really get used to being let down. By ourselves, our friends, our government, those we place on pedestals. Yes, there is a place for discretion. But more often than not, our mistrust sets in motion a negative cycle. Call it phenomenology or whatever you like, but all things are connected. How we look at others has a direct correlation not only with how they see us, but how they act towards us. If we start with our hearts open, we’ll likely not attract the spirit of betrayal.
Trust. As if no one would ever be the wiser. Trust does not come without risk. This is not a story of unicorns and rainbows. Life is risk. The only 8 Reno Tahoe Tonight
way to protect ourselves is to die. Either physically, or spiritually and emotionally. I believe, with the exception of a Caesar or two, we are not so much afraid of betrayal as we are of looking foolish, of getting our feelings hurt, our egos bruised, our so called reputations tarnished. If it helps, next time you are doubting whether to trust your heart, pretend no one is watching. Pretend you fell on the ice and got up before anyone saw. Because, probably no one will know anyway. And it is likely no one will care half as much as you do.
Trust. As if your life depended on it. Because, well, it does. What is the value of a life where you have to walk around constantly checking your back like some meth dealer in an alley? Hopefully that is rhetorical. Unless of course you’re a meth dealer who dwells in alleys. And then, well, you have other problems besides trust. Except it wouldn’t hurt for you to trust that you are worth more than this and to trust that life has infinitely more to offer.
Trust. As if there were no other choices. Because, well, there really isn’t a better choice. We must trust, on some level, in order to function at all in life. Every day we trust in a million little ways. Not just that the lights will work, the water will flow, the car will start, the garbage will be picked up, the bank won’t give away your money. But also that the thousands of cars we pass will stay in their own lanes, that gravity will continue
to work, that our hearts won’t forget to beat, that we won’t have to remind our lungs to breathe.
Trust. As if it were as essential as oxygen. We do not give trust its due. Like oxygen, we file away its importance until we are under water. Until we are frightened and our hearts have already slammed shut. And then there’s little chance we’ll remember. But the unspoken truth is that it is trust, not fear, that makes the world go ‘round. If fear were the order of the day, if vigilance was the reigning factor, then nothing would get done. The richest of people on the planet trust countless others all day long, every day. Neither Gates nor Jobs, nor Musk nor Oprah built their empires on their own. We rely upon countless others every day for more things than we can count. Look at that sandwich you are eating. Who grew the grains for the bread, the vegetables, the mustard seeds? Who milked the cows and who cultured the cheese? Who salted and hung the prosciutto? Who mined the metals and built the toaster? Who welded the steel counter where the ingredients were assembled? If we did not trust in these processes, we’d never take a bite.
Trust. As if to do anything else would be unthinkable. When we throw away trust, we throw away our key to the door of humanity. We perpetuate more of the violence we inflict regularly upon ourselves and others with our misinformed judgments and our withheld compassion. There is no one who is not deserving of your compassion, starting first with yourself. When we have compassion for ourselves, we find it easier to have compassion for others. When we show and are shown compassion,
trust naturally follows. When we trust, we retrieve the key to the door, and once opened, life’s abundance is allowed to flow inside. CHISHOLM PAINTS IN “BATTLE BORN HUES”
triking, colorful, and high in contrast, Battle Born Hues, an exhibition of new paintings from Reno urban artist Bryce Chisholm, is a Nevada showcase of the people, animals, and places that make our state unique. The show runs at the Sierra Arts Gallery from February 26th through March 28th with a free artist reception sponsored by Wild River Grille on Thursday, March 20th from 5-8:30pm. A celebration for the state’s sesquicentennial, this exhibition is about the founders, the famous, and the unknown of Nevada, including the avian, the reptile, and the mammal. The inhabitants of the silver state grace the canvases in styles and colors that are new and bold, as Chisholm is known for. This show is a hybrid of styles from traditional to the street. Bryce Chisholm is a prolific artist. He is well versed in many media but has become most
well-known for his stencil art using spray paint. Many of his large scale murals are found throughout Reno. A lifelong resident of the state of Nevada, “I felt compelled to explore, research and paint some of the great figures from Nevada’s past and present,” says Chisholm. New Multi-Media Promotion Model Community talk radio has distinct advantages! Text Chip Evans
Photo Debbie McCarthy
If you’re a business, a nonprofit, an organization, a candidate for elected office or even a rock band, communicating your messages is often a challenge. The traditional obstacles are expense, targeting and picking appropriate mediums. At America Matters Media we’ve developed a unique new approach to advertising derived from combining social media with terrestrial and internet radio along with harnessing the flexibility of the community talk radio format.
T
his new integrated, multi-faceted communication system lends itself to all manner of messages, from business advertisements for products and services to sharing the mission and goals of a nonprofit to promoting an event or a political candidate. The components are familiar: radio spots, social media postings, on-air radio mentions by show hosts, radio show segment sponsorships, on-air interviews, dedicated one-time radio shows and regular recurring dedicated shows. What is new and unique is the capability and flexibility to do any and all of these under one roof – the one over the AMM studio in the Reno Town Mall. To illustrate, let’s say you’re a business that wants to reach veterans. We can produce a 60-second radio spot free of charge and then choose how often you want to run it. You can also ask that it be run regularly on any or all of our three veteran-focused shows. All of our onair advertisements are coupled with social media posting to extend your reach. Want more? You can choose to be a segment or show sponsor for one of those three veteran’s shows. You’ll get mentioned by the host, have your ad run in the show and you can even come by the studio or call in for an interview from time to time. Or, when you have a special event or sale, you can come by or call in to make a quick announcement to the listeners.
Maybe your business is such a service to veterans that you want to have a recurring dedicated show segment on one of the three shows. Lastly, you might just decide you’d like your own monthly or weekly show to talk about your products and services. AMM has the ability to partner with you to do any or all of these things, inexpensively and nearly as quickly as you decide you want to do them. And keep in mind that with live streaming on the internet and broadcasting to smart phones through the TuneIn Radio app, we have listeners around the globe every day. This capability is clearly beyond that of traditional radio or standard internet advertising. You won’t get these options as an advertiser on a music station and little of it on other talk stations dominated by nationally syndicated programming. But you can at “The Home of Community Radio” through the growing number of stations affiliated with America Matters Media. We have created an advanced, integrated, multimedia system for messaging. We’re excited at its’ potential and invite you to give it a try to communicate your message to our growing local, national and international audience. ever wonder how much Pollution you are exPosed to on a daily basis?
h
ow about that visible dust cloud that seemingly appears to vanish, while driving down the mountain into the valley? The most common response is, “It’s not as bad as LA.” Most people don’t realize that Reno is directly in the prevailing wind direction from California’s extensive agricultural and pesticide spraying. This in turn is not only subjecting everyone in Reno to the daily bombardment of chemical overload, but across the U.S. as well. For years these chemicals have been compiling, mixing into other chemistry equations, and causing numerous unknown health crises. Has everyone been brain washed to believe that our so-called allergies, asthma, or bronchitis (reoccurring systemic microbial lung infections) are due to the popular myth, “change of season?” In truth, our internal allergic immune reactions possibly may worsen over time as chemicals accumulate within our nervous system cells from air conditioning chemicals, carbon monoxide, fungi, mold, viruses, chlorine, aluminum, lead, mercury, agricultural insecticides, and herbicides, just to name a few. Because of this, it is even more vital that we cleanse and or detoxify our bodies as much as possible, most especially during the spring and summer months. Are you aware that almost every solitary road in Nevada is hit with herbicide for weed abatement programs using Glysate? Do you think they clear the area first or warn us at least a day beforehand? Were you aware that from 1961 to 1971 Operation Ranch Hand used a lethal concoction (a mixture of equal parts of two highly toxic herbicides, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D) to spray an estimated 20 million U.S. gallons of defoliants and herbicides over rural areas of South Vietnam in an attempt to deprive the Viet Cong of food and vegetation?
14 Reno Tahoe Tonight
Also, between 1967 and 1972, a highly classified weather modification unit known as Operation Popeye, seeded the clouds using silver and lead iodide (via U.S. aircraft) in order to continue the rainy season, making it more difficult for the natives to travel and to keep them more confined. What’s more, the U.S. Military, as part of its Herbicidal Warfare Program, exposed our own military personnel and civilians to Agent Orange, thanks to a chemical manufactured by Monsanto and Dow Chemical. In fact, the USA continued to drop napalm bombs (Agent Orange) on North Vietnam until 1973. In 2005, Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto and Dow Company. Unfortunately this lawsuit was dismissed. Perhaps they need Erin Brockovich to step in. It’s time to take a stand and become more aware, before everyone’s heads, and hands are shaking uncontrollably from the chemical toxins we are being subjected to on a daily basis. How far does our health have to deteriorate before we awaken to what’s truly going on above? It is time to awaken to the rising detrimental environmental toxicity that we are being massively exposed to, before it is too late. to be or not to be, is the question.

When A Smartphone Camera Isn’t Enough
Reno Sparks Video Productions: A Local Gem To Know About Text Chip Evans
Photo Debbie McCarthy
In an age when anyone with a smartphone can be a videographer, it is refreshing to work with a true professional. When America Matters Media went to produce its first television commercial, we engaged Jim Parker of Reno Sparks Video Productions. The commercial was great!
The project gave me a chance to learn about this amazing business. The company has been providing professional video services in northern Nevada for over 26 years. The highlight of our experience was being filmed in his Chroma key virtual studio and seeing him work with all his high-end audio and visual equipment to make Debbie McCarthy and I look good. Of course, making me look good was the greater challenge! By the way, much of that high-end equipment is available for rent on a daily and weekly basis. He’s got twenty-two broadcast cameras! Another highlight of our time with Jim was a tour of his recently renovated and updated HD mobile production truck, the only one of its kind in northern Nevada available from an independent operator. This satellite and video production truck is now ready to go and loaded with all the latest HD equipment required to tackle any video project, including outdoor productions. Since it is mobile, it can record, edit and transmit video from any location. Imagine the possibilities!
pre- and post-production, plus providing outputs for television or direct to websites. They also can help with website design that takes advantage of the latest video and audio elements. A hallmark of the most professional video and audio services is the breadth of services so, to add to what I’ve described above, Reno Sparks Video Productions can provide studio productions, Bluray authoring and digital/analog editing. Debbie and I were impressed by the company’s new Live Television Network Global Studio with SD/HD broadcast fiber feed, making it the first independent company in northern Nevada to provide this service to news, broadcast outlets, and video production clients. So, next time CNN or ESPN or FOX wants to interview you, this company has the studio to host you! How does Jim describe his company’s value proposition? (from www.renovideo.com)
Jim’s company has expertise in a wide variety of projects, especially developing effective online video advertisements. They offer single and multicamera studio and field production services.
“Today, more than ever, there is an increasing demand for high-quality video production in areas of advertising and marketing, education and training. Reno Sparks Video Productions has successfully balanced the needs of professionals who are currently in the market for a video production with the knowledge and experience needed to present a quality project.”
Beyond working all that high-tech equipment, they can help clients take ideas from conception to completion, providing content creation, scripting,
Reno Sparks Video Productions is another of those brilliant gems in northern Nevada that more people need to know about. Now you do!

MULTI-TENANT RETAIL DESTINATION TO FILL FORMER SUPER-KMART SITE IN NORTHWEST RENO A new indoor shopping venue is set to open in Reno late spring 2014. The Great Western Marketplace will feature a diverse mixture of more than 300 artisans, retailers, craft and food merchants in the 167,000 sq. ft. former Super-Kmart site in Northwest Reno. Located off of Summit Ridge Drive, the Marketplace will provide entrepreneurs from across the West an opportunity to launch or expand a business, while investing in the local economy. The site, privately purchased in September 2013 by the Renobased Naumann family, is perfectly situated next to I-80, one of the West’s major travel corridors, with more than 1,000 parking spaces. Open Friday thru Sunday, the family-owned development will include café and bar areas, indoor and outdoor seating, and centralized meeting/rest areas. Live entertainment and special events will be featured each weekend at the Marketplace, year-round. “The site was a blight on the neighborhood and the city,” commented Trudy Naumann, President, Great Western Marketplace. “Every person driving in and out of Reno on I-80 saw an empty parking lot and bare storefront. We are transforming the space into an eco-friendly location that is both attractive and beneficial to the community and our residential neighbors.” Business-owners have a variety of “studio” spaces to choose from at the Marketplace - ranging in size from 100 - 15,000 sq. ft. Each studio is fully customizable to meet merchants’ individual needs without the stress or cost of managing their own freestanding location. “Our vision is a retail incubator where a new business can dip their toes into the water, while at the same time an existing business can expand their visibility or test out a new product,” commented Terry Naumann, Senior Partner, Great Western Marketplace. “Everyone in town is my business partner, and we hope to be a component of their success. We are committed to the unique character and spirit of owner-operated businesses – not typical big-box stores.” Business-owners and entrepreneurs interested in participating in the Great Western Marketplace can visit: www. greatwesternmarketplace.com/leasing. Local women come together to celebrate the essence of female empowerment through a one-day event during Women’s History Month.
Emerging self-discovery project, Art Inside Me, debuts with first-time event. In the spirit of Women’s History Month, two local women are holding a one-of-a-kind event providing a secure retreat for women to converse and connect through a unique arts and culture program on March 1. The event, “Art Inside Women,” features a lineup of talented female speakers; a sit-down lunch prepared by SoDo Reno; and a guided art project directed by Art Inside Me. The event organizers, Sharon DeMattia and Sarah Stevenson, believe in the importance of female self-discovery and empowerment through art programs. As a result, a component of the event features the debut of Art Inside Me, a project providing a medium in which individuals can express and acknowledge their innermost thoughts. “This event is an opportunity for women to reconnect with themselves in a fun and safe environment,” said Sharon, event organizer and owner of Art Inside Me. “So many women are running around trying to balance work and family life that they often forget to make time for themselves. This event is an outlet for women to acknowledge their hopes, dreams and fears and start a dialogue with other like-minded women.” The collection of promising speakers will share their deepest inspirations, tribulations and motivations hoping to empower each and every woman in attendance to take a stand for herself. Tickets are on sale now at www. artinsideme.com. Reservations are required, as space is limited.
TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR “CALL ME MADAM” AT CARSON VALLEY COMMUNITY THEATER Carson Valley Community Theatre will present Irving Berlin's musical comedy "Call Me Madam" over two weekends March 21-23 and 28-30 at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Friday and Saturday evening shows at 7:30pm will be followed by matinees on Sunday at 2:00pm. The “Call Me Madam” story is a satire on politics and foreign affairs that spoofs America's penchant for lending billions of dollars to needy countries. The show centers on Sally Adams, a well-meaning but ill-informed socialite widow who is appointed United States Ambassador to a small fictional European country, the tiny duchy of Lichtenburg. It's not long before her down-to-earth, typically undiplomatic manner has surprised and charmed the local gentry, especially the handsome Prime Minister. A second romance is blossoming between her young aid and Lichtenburg's enchanting young Princess. Rehearsals are underway with Mrs. Sally Adams played by Carla Wilson and Lichtenburg's Prime Minister played by Jim Dezerga. With a cast of 24, there is singing and dancing galore. Among the songs featured in the show are the popular chart makers of the ‘50’s, “It’s A Lovely Day” and “You’re Just In Love”. Tickets can be purchased online now at: www.showtix4U.com or at the CVCT Box Office located at 1572 Hwy 395, Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 5pm or at the door. Adult admission is $18.00 and admission for Senior/Student is $16.00. Groups of 10 or more can be purchased at a discount price of $2.00 off regular price at the box office. Dinner and show tickets are available at Minden Food Co. for the Friday and Saturday performances for $52.00 and a Sunday Champagne Brunch before the matinee is available at Minden Meat and Deli for $40.00. Additional information may be obtained by visiting CVCT’s website at www.carsonvalleycommunitytheatre.org or by calling 775-292-0939.
Free Gun Trust Seminar Pass Your Gun Collection to the Next Generation Safely, Easily, and Legally with a Gun Trust. U.S. Firearms Academy will be offering a free gun trust seminar March 19, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at U.S. Firearms Academy, 294 E Moana Ln, Reno Nevada. Are You Passionate About the Second Amendment, Competitive Shooting, Hunting, or Collecting Guns? Do You Want Your Gun Collection to be Protected After You Pass Away? This seminar will educate gun owners on how to pass their gun collection to the next generation safely, easily, and legally with a gun trust. Failure to specifically plan for your gun collection may expose your family to serious liability. This may come in the form of federal or state prosecution of an executor who unknowingly violates federal or state laws. Gun Trusts are used primarily for two reasons: (1) to legally expedite the transfer of NFA (“Title II”) firearms to heirs; and (2) to provide specific instructions over disposition of the gun collection. Gun trusts, not to be confused with conventional Living Trusts, must be specifically and carefully drafted to avoid causing inadvertent and accidental felonious behavior by Grantors, Trustees/ Executors, and Beneficiaries. Trust planning is an ideal solution for gun owners to plan for their beneficiaries. In addition to the preparation of the proper estate planning documents, gun-owner clients often need technical education as it relates to the National Firearms Act and BATF. If you have a gun collection, don’t miss this important free seminar on the Gun Trust. At this informative seminar, Estate Planning Attorney, Cedric W. Anderson, Esq., will answer the most critical questions about how to plan for your gun collection; presentation topics will include: • Current case law regarding Second Amendment rights • What is a Living Trust? • What is a Gun Trust? • Questions and Answers Seating is limited reservations are recommended. To find out more information about U.S. Firearms Academy visit www.USFirearmsAcademy.com email sales@ usfirearmsacademy.com, or call 775- 826-2626.

G
orgeous stunner Isha Casagrande is the de facto style maven for Reno’s fashionistas. One of the truly gifted movers of the fashion community, Casagrande is also one of the sweetest people I have ever met with a heart of pure gold. But folks would be surprised to know that Casagrande, who owns Lipstick Fashion Lounge & Salon in Reno’s Cal Arts District and is the personal shopping consultant for The Summit Mall, wasn’t always a card carrying member of the style council. Below she tells us about her journey from country to couture.
Isha Casagrande
I was born at home on the dining room table. My parents were total hippies; they’ve had books written about them. They were huge Haight Ashbury people. They lived on Olin Polley Ranch with the Grateful Dead. People tell me all the time that they remember my mom being naked and pregnant with me. They were musicians. So I grew up in a house where there was always a band playing. Even through high school. I remember telling them that they had to turn down the music because I had homework to do. My father, Larry Otis, played guitar with Ike and Tina Turner at the height of their whole drug use. In the movie, What’s Love Got To Do With It there’s one white guy depicted in the band and that character was based on my dad. My father has always been a musician. He plays in a band now with the guys from Exodus and Testament. My mom and dad were in a band together called Buster and the Cherry Sisters—it was all women and my dad. He was Buster and they were all the Cherry Sisters. I grew up in like this crazy household and we lived on 23 acres of vineyard in Napa, California in the Las Carneras region. Farmland. So there was nobody who lived out there. I had to ride the bus for hours just to get to school. In elementary school, there were maybe 6o kids who went to school. My sense of fashion started then. I was always a bigger girl and I always struggled with my weight. I remember I so wanted these turquoise blue cowboy boots. I saved my money and got them and wore them to school one day in fourth grade and got teased mercilessly about them because they were so different than anyone else’s that I never wore them again. I think I’m traumatized still from that. All the way through high school I was really bullied because I was always different. Different in a way that I think kids don’t understand at that age. Even then I marched to my own drummer as far as fashion was concerned. I got into fashion twelve years ago when I opened my first boutique. I’d always been styling my friends though. All my friends would come over before an event and we’d sit on the bed and drink
wine and I’d dress everybody from head to toe. But you know I never really cared about designers. I’m not a brand name person. I love people that just rock their style. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing, it’s how you’re wearing it. To me fashion and style are all about self confidence—period. That’s how I built my business. I was lucky enough to get involved with Fox TV when I first opened the store. I started putting out fashion shows and I worked with them on America’s Next top Model. And at that time when I had the boutique I actually brought some designers here and we did some major fashion shows. Leon Max called me from Europe and planned a show with me and sent his rep. We transformed Bubinga into a high end venue. I also worked with BCBG and Betsy Johnson. It’s been so fun doing all these things and it turned into hosting TV shows for Fox TV--which I never even imagined. I was so shy as a kid and my parents were so out there. They would just break out in song walking through a store and I’d be like OMG! It took me til my twenties to really break out of my shell. Now, give me a microphone and I’m a happy girl! I turned this business from a retail focus into a passion for making people feel good about themselves. I teach fashion camp to little girls for going on eight years now and it’s all about self confidence building and how to treat each other. I do it all summer and during spring break and at winter break. I feel like I have the best job in the world. The majority of people I work with are people going through a life change. That could be going back to work, changing a job or getting a new job, or going through a divorce. Stay at home moms who are getting back out into the work force and she wants to look more polished. I am so lucky and so passionate about everything I do. The best part of my day is in the morning when I see women and men sending me texts about how excited they are about their wardrobe. I
t’s been awhile since I had a “moment.” Those instances when you get blind-sided by something completely unexpected and it alters you, whether slightly or drastically, and causes you to want to tell EVERYONE about it, to the point of annoyance.
Fresh Bakin’ and Homeslice Productions are taking over the Pioneer Underground on March 29th for a night of storytelling…..ADULT storytelling. This is an 18+ event. The theme for the show is MIXED FEELINGS and will feature Kevin along with a bunch of local Reno-ites.
I was turned on to a podcast called RISK! by my friend John about a year and a half ago. Hosted by Kevin Allison (creator and a star of the critically acclaimed MTV sketch comedy show “The State”), it’s a storytelling podcast dealing with “true stories you never thought you’d dare to share.”
Earlier that day, Kevin will host a storytelling workshop at Good Luck Macbeth Theatre for those that either were selected to tell their stories, or are interested in being involved in a future storytelling event. There are only 15 spaces available for this event.
Storytelling is the heart and soul of us as humans. The sharing of stories is the oldest and purest form of human interaction, coming before music, books, theater or the creation of religion. A good story transcends the current moment and makes the listener feel they have been dropped into the place where the story takes place and feeling the emotions and thoughts of the teller.
Tickets for this event are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show. Get more information and buy tickets at www.renotahoecomedy.com or wwwfreshbakin.com. Tickets are also available at www.pioneercenter.com / 866-553-6605 and at the Pioneer Center Box Office from 11am – 6pm Monday through Friday and at the Pioneer Underground on show nights between 7pm and 11pm. Service charges may apply. No refunds. For a complete Reno Tahoe Comedy schedule, go to www.renotahoecomedy.com.
Some stories, we’ll call them the early-evening campfire stories, are safe for children. But once the kids go to their tents, the adults stay up and share the stories that may make them (or the listeners) blush. These stories can often be funny, touching, embarrassing, enlightening or emotional, but they are always completely compelling and the teller is left feeling empowered having shared a personal experience with people.
You can listen to all RISK! shows free at www.risk-show.com or downloadable via iTunes. Reno Tahoe Tonight 43

A Charity Fundraiser Event Benefitting Emily Fabulous Reese March 23, 2014 @ Sidelines
Pictured from left: Maddie Reese 14, Kate Reese 12, Thomas Reese 11 and Emily Reese 39
Emily Fabulous Reese is no guru, but I would sit at her feet; climb a mountain to a monastery to hold her eyes in mine. To learn her ways. To know the love that she knows. That she gives. The naked love she lives in plain sight among us.
E
mily is love Emily is love Emily is love and the light of her love is the rock of ages and a fountain of joy, hope and transcendent peace. Emily is the sun, the moon, the stars and all radiant things, and from her bright soul we see the real truth of this life: we are all connected in consciousness by the light of love and it is the truest truth and the only truth; the only thing there is. Selah.
Emily is love Emily is love Emily is love and her love is a light for all to see. In her dancing eyes love pirouettes and cackles at the way we dance. In her glorious smile love shines strong and long. In her weakness and her quiet pain, love gallops to the next breath ahead and calls back to us to run barefoot, wild and free. Love does not ask for permission to love, so why do we? Look at what love looks like running free. Emily mines strength and her banner over thee is love. Her love laughs at pity in its face and calls cancer a friend, and loves that enemy as herself for the priceless gifts it leaves under her tree. We are witnesses but we know not what we see. Look at what love looks like running free. “Spitballs, goofballs and farts,” she writes. Look at her as she parents her young who rush to her bosom knowing her light is love and love is life itself. And Emily is love, an indestructible wonder twin power to activate a fighter and fly like Joan 44 Reno Tahoe Tonight
of Arc over the battlefield of her body and spread love over the assemblage of the faithless and give hope through loving like a river that runs through you, in you, and becomes you. Look at what love looks like running free. Emily is love Emily is love Emily is love and if you are good she will love you and if you are not love forgives. For love is patient, love is kind, love is long suffering and love is blind. And love will never leave you, as love can never die. For love has built a place for you in Emily’s loving eyes. Those who love and have been touched by Emily and her bare knuckle bout with colon cancer will gather to enjoy her, celebrate her and love her. The event will be held at Sidelines Bar and Nightclub at 1237 Baring Boulevard in Sparks on Sunday March 23, 2014 and is a fundraiser for Emily’s bills and daily financial needs. Hosted by Jenny PezDeSpencer with music by Drinking With Clowns and MHM. Presented/sponsored by Our Hearts Reno and Reno Tahoe Tonight Magazine. The fun starts at 1pm and goes until late. Meet local celebrities, wear a wig, enter the raffle and have a blast! Donate directly to Emily in advance and afterwards at http://www.gofundme.com/70smho and please tell a friend and share the love.

Her popular vote win in Reno Tahoe Tonight’s recent 2013 Photo of the Year Honors competition validates what we already knew about her formidable talent and potential behind the lens. Her moving, candid photo of musician Bobby McFerrin at GSR’s Grand Theater was priestly, profound and sermonic, capturing the elegance of the artist, as well as the reverence that the young audience of area high-school musicians and choir members held for the acclaimed master vocalist. Here Balazs tells us a bit about the personal and professional inspiration behind her work.

The Spectacular Galaxy Luxury+ IMAX Opens at the Legends at Sparks Marina Text Oliver X
Photos Frank Haxton Digiman Studio RTT Art Director Grae Warren and I share a passion for the visceral power of the IMAX experience. And like any fan boys, we dutifully trek extended distances to see films like Batman--and in my case Transformers Dark of the Moon in glorious IMAX 3D--in San Francisco. Duende…sublime. But this pilgrimage is no longer necessary with the recent opening of the Galaxy Luxury+ IMAX at the Legends at Sparks Marina. And this theater complex has all the addictive bells and whistles that are certain to inspire a loyal following of feature film fans.

I
attended the media opening of the cinema complex on February 12 and was thoroughly impressed. The state-of-theart digital projection and the drink rattling Dolby ATMOS, the most advanced sound experience available, were both amazing.
62 Reno Tahoe Tonight
I revisited the property two days later on Valentine’s evening and watched “12 Years a Slave”—not exactly a romantic chick flick-but the visit served as a fine exposition of the theater’s goods. When we got there for the late showing, the dapper Rafe Cohen, president of
Galaxy Theatres, was still on the job, making sure things were running smoothly in the beautifully appointed eleven theater campus. Movie concession connoisseur Shelly Brown, who doubles as my better half, bases her movie theater
destination decisions on how good the popcorn is at a particular location. Happily, we were both thrilled by the offerings at the new Galaxy—which included ridiculously comfortable luxury leather recliner seats with fingertip controlled powered settings to kick back and prop up one’s feet, deep Reno Tahoe Tonight 63

cup holders and swiveling TV trays. The customer service was also noteworthy for its courtesy, efficiency and attentiveness. It was refreshing to see this aspect of their business plan get the priority it deserves. Shelly and I each enjoyed a sensible frozen adult beverage. And the popcorn? It met with her approval—thank God! Theater amenities like craft beer and wine have long been a part of the western European movie theater experience, but the Galaxy Luxury+ IMAX 64 Reno Tahoe Tonight
at the Legends at Sparks Marina has wisely skipped the annoying Euro theater intermission periods, the smoking, and the guilt-tripping passing of the hat for bleeding heart causes that would tilt the sensibilities of your average Tea Party Patriot. Instead they have focused on convenience, like selfticketing terminals, fast-moving lines and ticketless entry through their Galaxy cell phone app, which allows users to select the available seating that’s most to their liking, avoiding all lines with a simple scan of their virtual cell phone ticket.
The IMAX theatre features a 75-foot screen and stadium seating with high-back, plush rocker chairs and ample legroom. Their press materials note that “everything about IMAX viewing, from the film itself to the sound, technology, and design, is crafted to make viewers feel like they are part of the movie.” “Moviegoers will find that they are not going to a typical theatre,” says Cohen. “Rather they are now making a whole day experience of movies,
with mind blowing technology, the ultimate in concessions, and of course, shopping that awaits them after the last credit rolls.” To stay up-to-date with Galaxy Luxury+ Sparks IMAX, be sure to “Like” the theatre on Facebook and become a Galaxy Rewards member by signing up at GalaxyTheatres.com.” Tickets and reserved seating will go on sale today at GalaxyTheatres.com. You can be well on your way to weight loss and a much healthier lifestyle.
Text Thomas DeLauer
Amber Giles Photography
Location: Dog Beach in Zephyr Cove South Lake Tahoe Nevada.
In this fast-paced environment, exercise has taken a back seat for many Americans; leaving us overweight, sick, and complacent knowing that that is just how we are going to feel for the rest of our lives. Research is showing that High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has many more health benefits than even steady-state, longer duration cardio. What does this mean? It means that if you can summon the energy to kick your own but for 15-20 minutes per day in a high-intensity fashion, then you can be well on your way to weight loss and a much healthier lifestyle. HIIT has been hitting the press lately as one of the most surefire ways to burn fat. It kicks the body into what is called an “Anaerobic State,” which essentially means that your heart is beating faster than you can consume oxygen, therefore putting you into a so-called oxygen debt (granted, you are only within this debt for short periods of time). Because of this, your body kicks into metabolic overdrive making not only the workout itself more calorie-burning, but the time afterwards as well. That’s right, afterwards! This is called excess post oxygen consumption or EPOC. Your body works harder in metabolic overdrive for hours after the workout in order to return to its normal state of oxygen consumption (it plays catch-up). This means that you are burning fat for literally hours after your workout!
Try this one on for size: On a treadmill or a stationary bicycle, sprint or pedal as hard as you can for thirty seconds (this needs to be vigorous), then rest for about one minute at either a slow walk or slow pedal. Repeat this about ten to fifteen times. You will be amazed at how much it kicks your butt in that short amount of time. Don’t be fooled, just because it is a short workout doesn’t make it easy. You’ll be sweating, or at least breathing hard, but your arteries will thank you later. Be sure to be supplementing with adequate amounts of protein as well to help your body recover. I recommend products like HIT Supplement’s whey protein isolate as it doesn’t have the unnecessary ingredients.

Makeup is an art form that has been growing increasingly popular, especially with the use of social media forums such as YouTube and Instagram. As an artist I find this inspiring and encouraging. I love to follow different users such as @vegas_nay @auroramakeup and MAC 70 Reno Tahoe Tonight
Cosmetic’s @romerojennings to learn about new techniques and products. I have been inspired with stories of self-taught/self-made artists like @chaosmakeupartist and it's also where I was introduced to my favorite false lashes by House of Lashes.

However, as much as I love the growing popularity of my art form on social media, there is something that can't be translated through likes and follows; something that I hope makeup artists don't lose touch of: the human aspect of what we do. Yes, I get my passion from colors and textures, 72 Reno Tahoe Tonight
skin types and bone structures, even nature. I absolutely love to create layered yet polished looks. From your most natural bride, to the most creative editorial, I love it all! But I also get my passion from being able to connect with another human being on an intimate, unique level.

Each time I do my craft I say a silent prayer before I arrive to be able to impact my bride/client/ photographer/talent in the best way possible. Sometimes it's being the calm in the storm or bringing joy during a stressful time. Sometimes it's the opportunity to be uplifting or be quick with my work to keep things on schedule. Whatever it is, I always do my best to positively impact each 74 Reno Tahoe Tonight
situation, and whatever it is, I love it. I love being a part of something. I love making an impact. I love blessing people with my craft. No amount of Instagram photos or YouTube tutorials can express something that can only be experienced, because underneath the makeup, the skincare, the brush in my hand, there is something more. It's something I can only describe as human connection.

THE LIGHT FACTOR
Immortality Code
“Dawn was breaking, like the light from another world.” – Alfred Jarry
A
couple of months ago I was invited to give an interview for Australia’s premier new age magazine, New Dawn. I was asked about what I teach and why. The following article is based on that interview:
My purpose as a spiritual educator in transformation studies and personal development is to inform people of the new environmental condition that is causing an influx of Consciousness (spiritual energy) in the physical universe and, more important, to help them expand themselves to participate with that universal Consciousness by actualizing their personal Consciousness. This concept may fly in the face of established, dogmatic theology, which is based on faith and worship or on social mores or codes that hardly address actual spiritual development. Religion cannot be confined to paper; the Word of God is not dead but a living, thriving source of intelligence and love. Nor can religion be relegated to historical terms. Every field of human endeavor advances with new technology and with new understandings. Religion should be no different.
The popularized religious conceptualization of God--be it within the context of Christianity or any other belief--is to confine Him, Her or It to either an anthropomorphized icon or an unattainable, imperceptible illusion. The power or force that we so often term as God is not something to be limited by the human mind or by human institutions. God is something to be experienced by means of the potential within each person. The way to do that is to live within God’s Presence and that means to be resonant energetically with the non-physical, ultradimensional intelligence of the universe. Thus, to be Conscious is to know God. Humans left to their own devices are limited and for the most part arrogant. That is the mortal nature: to convince itself that it knows better than the spiritual nature, which is mostly inert or dormant in the third-dimensional paradigm. It can, however, be activated so as to awaken the whole individual, who can then be liberated from the trap of space and time and the temporal construct. 80 Reno Tahoe Tonight
This is what we teach in Cosolargy--a modern form of an ancient transformative process. The system was a spiritual technology practiced by people of secret orders throughout the world. It was all but lost, yet has been restored and updated for today. The practice involves absorbing, processing, and personalizing (as well as transmitting) cosmic-solar energy, which “contains” non-physical or spiritual data: intelligence or information factors. This spiritual data can be received by and reasoned upon only by a person’s spiritual Consciousness, a sense or faculty beyond mind and psyche yet related to them. Consciousness, therefore, must be awakened and developed. The way to do this, as a beginning point, is by absorbing sunlight. This process stimulates the receptors of the eyes, the brain, nervous system, and endocrine system (pituitary, pineal, hypothalamus) for physiological benefit but, more important, acts as a catalyst for unlocking the dormant higher psycho-spiritual senses, which are pre-existent to physical form and function. Simply put, these are the energy centers and the organizing field of the human being. The aim of awakening these is the activation of Consciousness and the revivification of the Light body — a person’s eternal, immortal nature. This allows for co-existence in both spiritual and physical dimensions (or energy states) simultaneously, the result being the extension of a person’s spiritual identity after death. The human being, individually and collectively, has the potential to unlock the “immortality code” within its own make up. This is the key to spiritual existence. THE LIGHT FACTOR is a featured column on spirituality, consciousness, science, energy and adventures into the unknown. Hot New Spring Design Trends for Your Home As a real estate professional, I get asked all the time what people can do to liven up their homes, make them pretty and, of course, to add value while doing it. Spring is a great time to get rid of clutter and make some fun, easy changes by tapping into hot interior design trends! This year, style is all about adding splashes of bright colors, textures and textiles, maximizing light and creating a sense of spaciousness.
Color and Light
There is no better way to banish the bore of winter than livening up your favorite room of the house with a bright spring color! Think turquoise with red and white accents. Consider yellow with a touch of green. Adding pillows or pieces with these bright accent colors will give your favorite room new energy.
Wood is where it’s at
I am seeing a major swing in this season's interior design trends towards wood textures and wood-inspired textiles. High on the list of must-haves from top designers: Tree-printed wallpaper, wood-grain wainscoting, and arty touches such as wood sculpture pieces and wood-inspired décor.
Simple Spaces
Spring cleaning is not just something for your closet! Think about all of the living spaces in your home; one sure-fire way to change the look and feel of a space is to remove some of the “stuff” that tends to pile up all winter. Try removing some of your knick-knacks or changing the artwork in your main living space. You will be surprised to find that simply changing the art can make it feel like a whole new room. Sometimes we have all of the materials we need right at hand to revamp a space and make it feel new.
Texture is Power
If painting is not your thing, you are not alone. Perking up a room with texture is an easy, nomess way to add interest to your home for 2014. Wall-hangings, lamps and accent pieces with high-gloss finishes or sequins work. Other options include adding mirrors, mosaics and metal tiles. These are just a few items you can use to add that “pop” that’s been missing from your to your kitchen or bath--without having to paint the walls. The shop local movement can at times devolve into vacuous sloganeering for some who fail to practice what they preach. Not so for dynamic doers like Jennifer Cantley, the twenty-something founder of Shop Small Northern Nevada, LLC. Cantley saw a need in her native Douglas County, for affordable marketing, PR and networking services that spread the brand messages of mom and pops and small store owners from Minden to Reno. The newly-minted Shop Small Northern Nevada has already built an online networking marketplace, sponsors special marketing events and public events and generally assists small businesses with social media postings, a ton of cheerleading energy and word of mouth. In just a few short weeks, Cantley says her phone has been ringing off the hook with eager and interested businesses seeking to make a stronger connection to their customer bases.
I spoke with the busy mother of three, who is also a talented jazz vocalist, about her company mission and her upcoming event itinerary.

RTT: What events do you have coming up? The last five weeks have been exhilarating! I initially focused on Douglas County and now I’m expanding towards Carson City and Washoe County, then the rest of Northern Nevada. Our next event is March 15th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Sharkey’s in Gardnerville. There will be over 40 small businesses in one spot with live music and even a bouncy house--provided by Bounce n Play-for the kids. We’ll move inside to the Ballroom if the weather is bad. The event is the first of many scheduled for 2014.

Springtime = Abundance! Spring is upon us, promising many fruits of the land. It’s a time of rebirth, cleansing, and abundant fresh food. Text Rachelle Lanning Photo Grace Hutchison
Although we are fortunate to be nestled close to California’s fertile soils with fresh produce available year-round, the real food celebration begins in the spring. Farmers markets pop up on street corners, bringing with them fresh nourishment at a fair price by local farmers.
B
efore it became a booming industry some 60 years ago, food was a difficult commodity to come by. It was a laborious effort to plow fields, churn butter, and keep food on the family table. We’re fortunate to have massive produce sections at the grocery store without the backbreaking work, but in the end, we pay a heavy price for this luxury. The majority of food grown on this continent is produced commercially, meaning that it lacks many of the nutrients it once had and has been sprayed with toxic chemicals. Your grandparents may scoff at words like “organic”, as everything they ate was organic! Farmers rotated crops and turned the soil to guarantee that it stayed rich in nutrients, thus providing nutritious food for 86 Reno Tahoe Tonight
Rachelle Lanning
their families. Today this practice is only done at organic farms, where it is regulated. You could even start your own little garden! Because the food cultivation industry has become highly profit-driven, many shortcuts have been taken to become even more profitable (as is common in any industry). It’s a simple formula: cut costs and minimize labor to yield greater earnings. Ultimately, as the industry revealed its multi-billion dollar per year potential, companies started manufacturing processed foods as fast as we could consume them. Granted, these foods are convenient and will keep you from starving. And that’s... about it. They contain very little nutrients and are loaded with harmful chemical preservatives and additives. Perhaps the money, time, and energy invested in feeding our families ought to be at the top of our priority list. Nourishment and health is not a last-minute convenience stop. Of course this is easier said than done. Now is the time to act! Produce is abundant and affordable in the spring, so this is the perfect time to commit to incorporating more fresh foods and building life-sustaining habits. You will notice how good it feels.

Drinking With Clowns
Review
Reno’s hottest artists
Mojo Green, Bazooka Zoo and Tony Walker
play The Knitting Factory, Thursday March 27, 2014 for the Record Release of Drinking With Clowns’ El Vuelo. 6pm doors.
R
eno’s Drinking With Clowns really know how to have fun, and they bring the party to their new record “El Vuelo” or The Flight. The popular Latin group’s third commercial release, the concept album is also their most ambitious undertaking and most accomplished effort to date. The trio’s signature streak of irreverence is of course still there (the group employs Schizopolitans front man XTeViON to wonderful comedic effect on “piloted” interludes that take the listener on DWC’s musical flight), but the self-produced album has higher highs than they’ve previously attained sonically and is a headphone pleaser from start to finish. Described as “a musical journey around the world,” the 16 tracks on El Vuelo explore many genres, from Rock, Hip-Hip, Funk, Cumbia, Salsa and Reggae for a musical mash-up that makes you move. The record starts strong after a seductive female intro voiceover welcomes the listener to the flight with “Getaway” featuring Failure Machine’s Spencer Kilpatrick on guitar, Tristan Selzler on horns, DWC’s Baldo Bobadilla on vocals with an assist from singer Karla Valverde. The lovely melodics of the Reggae flavored cut “American Cumbia” follows and is thoroughly enjoyable.
The meat of the record showcases some of the area’s most gifted musicians on my favorite tunes on the release. “That Thang” opens with an Afro Latin Funk guitar figure worthy of the African star Thomas Mapfumo, then drops down into Bobadilla’s Spanish croon, before morphing into
Text Oliver X Album art by Camilo Priefo the group harmonies that reminded me of the best work from The 5th Dimension and Earth Wind & Fire. Then suddenly, in drops Chef from South Park, as our pilot XTeViON chimes in with his best Isaac Hayes impersonation. Pure gold! Track 11 “Type of Man” is the standout for me on El Vuelo. Guitarist Spencer Kilpatrick is a beast ripping through blistering arena leads; I was blown away by his lightening licks and tone. While stellar contributions were made by guitarist Eric Stangland (“Insecto” and “Falta Amor”) as well as by bassist Andrew Knust (“Falta Amor,” “That Thang”) and vocalist Jenes Carter (“Bounce”), it’s the Clowns themselves (percussionist Camilo Priefo, drummer Kris Trujillo and vocalist/guitarist Baldo Bobadilla) who shine brightest with their dynamic arrangements and balanced musical performances throughout El Vuelo. Don’t miss Drinking With Clowns as they join forces with Reno’s hottest acts Mojo Green, Bazooka Zoo and Tony Walker for their all ages record release event for El Vuelo at The Knitting Factory, Thursday March 27, 2014. Doors at 6pm and the first band will hit the stage at 7pm. Tickets to this event are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Get tickets at re.knittingfactory.com. Parallel to Paradise:
Addiction and other love stories by Laura Newman – LeRue Press
I
wanna start by admitting that I fell down a flight of stairs to acquire a hard copy of this book to write my review. Knit-wittingly oblivious to the danger lurking beneath my feet, I was so absorbed with delight over finding the title at Sundance Books in Reno’s Cal Arts district, I lost my footing during the process of patting myself on the back while saying these exact words, “Yeah, I could have gone on Amazon. com to buy this, but I wanted to support local…” bump, bump, bump, thump, splatter! Struck down for uttering such heresy by the literary Gods, I sprang up unharmed in body, but rubbing my bruised ego. Finally the book was in my hands bwah, ha, ha, ha, ha! I heard Vincent Price in my head.
Was it worth a few days in traction? Oh yes. In Parallel to Paradise, Reno writer Laura Newman has the quirky observational comedic wit of Irma Bombeck on coke. I’ve not read a more satisfyingly enjoyable collection of short stories since Vonnegut’s Welcome to the Monkey House. Like a fat kid with a pillowslip full of Halloween candy, Parallel’s cup runneth over with goodness, in stories that are startlingly candid, enthralling and thoroughly entertaining. I wasn’t quite sure whether Newman’s earnest insights were gleaned from an overactive 90 Reno Tahoe Tonight
analytical engagement with the brooding hordes of disturbia, or from a stint in solitary confinement. But no matter, and to our good fortune, Newman gleefully excels in referencing the random scatological minutiae that we spontaneously recollect, and mills this grist into the fabric of her narratives, sentence by glorious sentence. Kinda like a Dennis Miller monologue in print, attributes we typically assign to the neurotic, work marvelously here for Newman: the wordsmith as lifesmith smelting literary gold from irony’s ore. Throughout, Newman’s syntax is the star, as she knowingly celebrates her love of speech, of language, and has the courage to turn over metaphorical stones to see what scurries forth to indulge her vice. Pick up a copy of Parallel to Paradise, one of the best titles from fast-rising local publisher LeRue Press, upstairs on the fiction table at Sundance Books. And um, watch your damn step!

The Novelists CD Release for Book 1
Featuring The Siren Society and special guest Tyler Stafford
Saturday, March 29, 2014 @ The Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget. Text Oliver X Photos Shannon Balazs
The Novelists make music the way successful writers write—prolifically. Through their Book Club subscribers can download up to two songs per month and hear fresh music on a regular basis. The band sent 92 Reno Tahoe Tonight
me several tracks to preview from their upcoming Book 1 CD to be released later this month at their showcase at The Nugget on March 29. Despite rumors of their demise, The Novelists are in fact in fine form once again on their newest selfproduced project. Now made up of core members Joel Ackerson, Eric Andersen and Zack Teran, the now signature elements of The Novelists’ sound--lyrical depth, powerfully emotive narrative sensibilities and technical brilliance in musicianship—are all on full display. It seems improbable—even impossible--but dammit The Novelists keep getting better! I catch myself
Review sounding like a breathless fan boy when referring to Joel Ackerson’s vocals. On “No One Watching Us” Ackerson’s smoky coloration, breathy jazz inflection and dynamic projection is world class. On “Take it Slow” the closest thing to a ballad I’ve heard from the group to date, Ackerson’s voice is a supplicant, quiet, and almost plaintive. Teran anchors my favorite track, bowing moody bass strings counterbalancing Jason Thomas’ live drums laid over Ackerson’s programmed beats and pumped up bpms on the coiled uptempo rocker “Finish Line.” Here vocalist Andersen is remarkable as he switches reels dramatically from his classic pop persona, singing with a stridence and abandon that will curl toes for the faithful and open a whole new audience to The Novelists. “Finish Line” highlights the collaborative production strides The Novelists have recently made and their Book 1 seems primed to thrill, bringing the band closer to the national recognition they so richly deserve. RTT: Catch us up on some of the highlights and developments for The Novelists since the last time we spoke back in July of 2013. The Novelists: We had recorded a full album last year by the time we spoke with you in July. Since then, we have recorded another (24 songs total). Also, the core of the band has transitioned from a four-piece to a three-piece with the departure of Megan Slankard, leaving Joel Ackerson, Eric Andersen and Zack Teran. In addition to our continued devotion to acoustic arrangements, our set has started to reflect some of the electric, full-band components from the new recordings, making us more versatile than ever. We are pleased to welcome Justin Kruger on drums for our CD Release and subsequent tour. RTT: Creatively delivering selections from your song catalog to your loyal and growing fan base has been a hallmark of The Novelists experience. How do you feel this strategy has benefited you? The Novelists: First and foremost, we are music fans. We simply chose to market our new material in a way that was consistent with our evolving tastes as listeners. The Book Club allowed us to keep a consistent and manageable stream of content flowing directly to our fan base. The Book Club served a double function, in that it also gave us a goal of constant productivity. This has been hugely beneficial in helping us develop both our sound and creative relationships within
the band. Thanks to the Book Club, we will have two full albums to release this year. RTT: A few months back a rumor circulated that The Novelists were breaking up or had already broken up. Can you comment about that? The Novelists: Chalk it up to a miscommunication. After The Novelists and Megan decided to part ways, we were trying to write our press release in a way that reflected our continuing support of each other’s careers. However carefully we chose our words, we knew that some people would interpret “parting ways” as “breaking up.” It was a six sentence statement that ended with, “The Novelists and Megan both look forward to sharing new music with you soon,” but I think many people had already interpreted the sentiment incorrectly before reading that sentence. RTT: Despite the strong influence of YouTube programming on the much decimated A&R record industry scouting apparatus, you stay committed to an old-school, time tested method of artist development by being tireless road dogs. Talk about your spring and summer touring plans? Have you tapped the college circuit through organizations like the National Association of Collegiate Activities? The Novelists: We prefer to approach colleges directly, and we’ve had great success with this approach, as well as playing regional college booking showcases. The NACA environment often feels impersonal. Last year, we really enjoyed adding a number of festivals, house concerts and small theaters to our schedule. This year we plan to do the same, but more frequently, now that we are finally done recording the new albums. That said, we have also been paying attention to our YouTube channel as of late. We have uploaded quite a few new videos of original songs, as well as some of our favorite covers. RTT: You present a unique stage show when you perform. In your observation, are bands losing site of the importance of showmanship, stage sets and connecting with their audiences with that little something extra when they perform? The Novelists: Actually, we have been inspired by the creativity we have found in our fellow performance artists. Thanks to the increased Reno Tahoe Tonight 93

role video is playing in the current industry, we’ve found that more bands are incorporating multi-media into their sets. With our shows, we are simply looking to create a more immersive experience for the audience. On top of that, since we live in a town that’s currently thriving with abundant art, we have been trying to collaborate as often as possible with other local artists. In particular, we have found rewarding creative relationships with Bryon Evans Films, Shannon Balazs Photography, and Siren Society, to name a few. Additionally, we are pleased to showcase the incredible talent of local favorite and close personal friend Tyler Stafford as the opener for our CD Release on March 29th at the Nugget’s Celebrity Showroom. RTT: Where did you record Book 1 and are you keeping many of the production elements completely in-house? Are you working with other producers and engineers? Who would you like to collaborate with musically in the near future? The Novelists: For the Book Club, the majority of the recording was done here in Reno at our own True Story Records. However, Eric, Zack and Megan all have their own home studios that we employed frequently. In a few instances, we used the studios at Ex’pression College for Digital Arts in Emeryville, CA (engineer, Michael Cross), and Imirage Sound Lab in Sparks, NV (engineer, Tom Gordon). For mixing we used David Peters in Los Angeles, JJ Wiesler in
94 Reno Tahoe Tonight
San Francisco, and Reno’s own Tom Gordon. For future collaborations, we are excited to continue working with both our favorite Reno artists, as well as the numerous talented people we meet while touring. In June, we have a twoweek tour planned with Australian sensation, Mia Dyson. We connected last year at Strawberry Music Festival and have been planning this ever since. RTT: What was the high point of the recording process for this series of tracks? The Novelists: Co-writing. Funny enough, we had very little experience with this when the band began. Backstory was comprised mainly of solo works that we arranged as a group. As we began writing together, we realized quickly that our “sound” became more cohesive as a result. Like the chemistry of our voices when combined, we found that our collective writing resonated strongly with all of us.

Sexuality

Are You Ready to Realize Your Sexual Fantasies? “All ‘Eros’ is custom…any sexual act is moral or immoral by precisely the same laws of morality as any other human act; all other rules about sex are simply customs—local and transient.” ~ Robert A. Heinlein What is sexually normal? What is sexually deviant? Who makes these distinctions? Our sexual conceptions and perceptions are prescribed by our culture. We are constantly exposed to sexual messages and images through all forms of media. After all, sex sells. Yet these messages are often conflicting and confusing by nature. Be sexually desirable, but not too desirable then you could be viewed as a “slut” or a deviant.
is a possibility and is the risk worth the reward? Knowing your partner is the key to a successful, sexual surprise. Exploring and knowing the boundaries of each other and the relationship enables us to understand what is acceptable in the realms of sexual play. It is up to you and your partner to decide what is sexually acceptable within your own relationship. Society does not need to dictate or limit your imagination. Work to build open lines of communication with your partner and enjoy your sexuality to the fullest. Lisa A. Rizzoli
What about our sexual fantasies? Can we freely share them with our partners or others? Is it safe for us to explore our sexual desires? I once had a man talk to me about an anniversary gift he had purchased for his wife. It was a strap-on dildo; he wanted to explore anal sex play with her. After some discussion, I learned he had never discussed this desire with her. My suggestion was to have a beautiful anniversary dinner and to give her something personal as an anniversary gift, then at a later date talk about his desire to explore anal play. It is important for us to create a safe space to explore and communicate our desires, fantasies, and wishes. Creating safe space is a practice of authentic communication. A couple can develop a way to safely communicate with one another and to really listen to each other’s needs, wants and desires. In the above-mentioned scenario, the husband wants to explore a sexual act with his wife that needs to be discussed before a present is given. Being authentic about our fantasies and desires with one another is a form of intimacy that enhances and deepens the relationship. Of course there are the times when we want to surprise our partners. For example, meeting our partner at a hotel room wearing a wig and negligee. Do we need to discuss this fantasy first? It would take away from the surprise of the experience and it is a risk. The risk of rejection 98 Reno Tahoe Tonight

Foolish Mortals: A Shakespearean Look at Duplicity, Mistaken Identity and the Madness of Love March 7-9, 2014 at the Laxalt Auditorium
Sierra School of Performing Arts presents Foolish Mortals: A Shakespearean Look at Duplicity, Mistaken Identity and the Madness of Love March 7-9, 2014 at the Laxalt Auditorium (Warren Nelson Building) 401 West Second Street in Reno. Foolish Mortals will be an entertaining one-hour look at life and love through the works of William Shakespeare. This production is perfect either as an introduction to Shakespeare’s works or for the Shakespeare enthusiast. As an instructor for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival InterACT program, our Director, Michelle Calhoun has seen firsthand how difficult it can be for students to comprehend the language, humor and strength of Shakespeare’s writings. Shakespeare’s works, although containing language that may be unfamiliar, should be active, vibrant—and fun! Our goal for Foolish Mortals is to present a series of scenes, monologues and sonnets that are unified in central themes, but still entertaining to watch. Narration provides educational tidbits about each scene presented and, in some cases, about Shakespeare’s life and times. The result is exciting, potentially thought-provoking and sometimes downright silly. Performances will be one weekend only; March 7th and 8th at 7:30pm and March 9th at 2pm.
