WEEK 3 READING: KRAUSS, ROSALIND, 1972.: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM. ARTFORUM.
MARIO’S WORLD
Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Le Corbuiser’s view of pictorial space is not surprising:Pictorial space is that which cannot be entered or circulated through;it is irremediably space viewed from a distance, and is therefore eternally resigned to frontaliy. These terms are three-fold.First,the object is registered as pure extension,as flat.Second, the constellation of objects wedge together.Third, color and texure are handled in a manner. So the distance transformed into a representation of cesura between the appearance of the object and the object itself.
Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words)
Le Corbusier insists upon the rigid frontality of all objects experienced from a distance, and further, that frontality and distance combine to allow knowledge of the real only by interference.Against this he pits the separate space by means of rotation through it.So that, for Le Corbusier, the counterpoint between frontality and rotation equals the contrast between ideation and experience.

1ST MARIO’S WORLD
COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD
In this combined mario world drawing,I made some changes about the structrues of some objects and add more objects between the space of the original two mario worlds while the overall view of them still ramained as the original mario world map pictures.
This 1st Mario’s World contains the front mario’s world image.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGINS.
ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD
Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words)
I changed the structure of the hidden part of some objects to make those blocks less boring. The buildings in the middle part filled the emptyness of the picture and gave more volumes to the whloe layout.(The castle and the characters
Perspective was always linked to a fixed point of view.By extending the vanishing point to infinity, the constructions of perspective are rendered at one and the same time more flexible from an instrumental point of view, and more universal from a philosophic point of view. It records what already exists, wheareas axonometric projection constructs that which does not yet exist. Furthermore, axonometric projection also shows a new concept of time.If perspective, denpendent on a single point of view, seemed to freeze time and motion, the atopical space of axonomatric suggested a continuous space in which elements are in constant motion.
were refered to a map of the game ‘Monument Valley’) There were clouds on the two mario’s world picture.I didn’t put the clouds on the ‘Combined Mario’s World‘drawing because it would be confusing since their lines might meet the lines of other objects. I used the live paint tool in illustrator to fill in the colors. The color are picked from the pictures of the original mario’s world.I picked three different tones of a color from each object on the picture in order to create the depth. In my Mario’s New World drawing, the left hand side is the darker side.So the light came from the north-east direction. When two objects met,the one near the front would always cover the one in the back.
Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projection has its origin in ancient visual practices. The revolutionary artists of the early twentieth century avant-arde wanted to go beyond art’s traditional role of interpreting the world to imagine an art capable of constructing new worlds. And it first occured in a military context, where it was originally used to chart the three-dimensional trajectories of artillery projectiles.

APPENDIX I set up the first traced mario picture and rotated it at 45 degrees in the top left side of my working place.
I overlaid the front side on another tracing paper which is shown underneath in this photo.

Then I overlaid the mario picture by drawing lines to locate the objects.I measured the length and the height of each object to make sure their size remain the same. The heights of the objects are vertical to the T-square. (I replaced the traced mario photo with the original printed photo beacuse later I found it was eaiser to see)
I traced the two mario worlds into one on another tracing paper and made some changes of the hidden parts of some objects, also, add more buildings between the space of two mario worlds.I didn’t add much details on this hand drawing. The rest were done by adobe illustrator.
