THIS PROJECT BEGINNED WITH OBSERVING THE SPACES/OBJECTS ON OUR GIVEN SITE, WHICH ARE USED BY THE PEOPLE/COMMUNITY IN THAT AREA IN AN INFORMAL WAY . WE WERE SUPPOSED TO MAKE OUR OWN SPACE/ OBJECT WHICH WOULD SERVE THE SAME PURPOSE. ON MY SITE TRESS SERVED A GREAT PURPOSE OF FULFILLING PEOPLE NEED. THIS PLACE LOOKS VERY AESTHETICALLY PLEASING BECAUSE OF THIS TREES . TREES SERVED THERE MANY NEEDS EXAMPLE- BY GIVING SHADE, ADVERTISING, HANGING, WOOD, STORAGE ETC. SO I MADE AN OBJECT MADE FROM THE WASTE PIPES(WHICH ARE ABUNDANT ON SITE) AND TRIED TO SERVE ALL THOSE THINGS WHICH A TREE DOES AND AT A SAME TIMES LOOKS ELEGANT AND IMMACULATE WITH DIFFERENT PATTERNS CREATED WITH WEAVING.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN/SEM-II/INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

WE TOOK A 3-DIMENTIONAL OBJECT AND MADE A REPLICA OF IT WITH 2-DIMENSTIONAL PLANES. ALL THE CURVES WERE SUPPOSE TO BE CONVERTED INTO SMALL TWO DIMENSIONAL PLANES. THESE PLANES WOULD JOIN AND GIVE THE THREE DIMENSIONAL EFFECT. ONCE THIS THING WAS DONE, WE DEFORMED OUR OBJECT AND PROGRESSIVELY MADE IT INTO A MASK FOR THE OLDER OBJECT. MY OBJECT WAS A PEACOCK DECOR.

WE WERE GIVEN ITALO CALVINS’S PARA FROM HIS BOOK’THE INVISIBLE CITIES’. HERE HE TALKS ABOUT HOW PEOPLE SPEAK ABOUT THERE STORIES AND HOW WE IMAGINE IT. OUR IMAGINATIONS ARE BASED ON OUR IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES THUS THEY TURN TO BE VERY DIFFERENT FROM REALITY. OUR INSTALLATION HAD MUNDANE OBJECTS THAT WE PICKED FROM OUR SITE .THIS OBJECTS WERE HUNG IN A SET WHICH HAD SCREENS TO PROJECT SHADOWS ON THEM. THIS SHADOWS HAD COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FORM THAN THAT OF REAL OBJECT. WE ALSO EXPERIMENTED WITH DIFFERENT KIND AND TYPES OF SHADOWS.

INTERPRETATION

WE WERE GIVEN A POEM TO READ AND WE HAD SKETCH THE FIRST IMAGES THAT WOULD COME IN OUR HEAD. MY POEM WAS ABOUT PEACH, BUT POET NEVER DISCLOSED THIS OBJECT. IT WAS DESCRIBED PART BY PART WITH TERMS OF ITS COLOURS, LOOKS, TEXTURE ETC. THEN I PROCESSED AHEAD BY MAKING A EXPERIMENTAL MODELS THAT WOULD TRANSFORM THIS POEM INTO A SCULPTURE. MY FINAL MODEL WAS A BLANK BOX WHICH HAD PERCOLATIONS AT DIFFERENT PLACES THROUGH WHICH YOU COULD GET GLANCE OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE OBJECT BUT OBJECT AS A WHOLE REMAINED A MYSTERY.

WE CHOOSE ONE OBJECT WHICH BELONGED TO OUR FAMILY FROM A VERY LONG TIME AND THEN DOCUMENTED THE STORY BEHIND IT THROUGH MAKING SKETCHES.LATER WE TRIED TO MAKE OUR STORY INTO AN OBJECT/INSTILATION. MY OBJECT WAS A SHIV IDOL AND A DHOPDAN WHICH MY FAMILY LOST AND OWNED AGAIN AND AGAIN WITH TIME. THIS DHOPDAN AND SHIV IDOL CAN BE DETACHED IN TO MULTIPLE FRAGMENTS. SO VERY TIME THEY WERE FOUND, THEY HAD TO BE REJOINED THOUGHTFULLY. SO MY INSTALLATION WAS A BLACK BOX WHICH HAD DIFFERENT MECHANISMS TO OPEN IT AT DIFFERENT LEVELS. AT EVERY LEVEL YOU WOULD FIND ONEONE PIECE WHICH WOULD JOIN AND MAKE ONE COMPLETE OBJECT.THUS MY INSTALLATION WAS INSPIRED BY MY STORY AND BY THE MECHANISM OF MY OBJECTS.

IN THIS PROJECT WE WERE SUPPOSE TO MAKE A HOUSE FOR THE COLLECTOR OF THE WORD/OBJECT THAT WE WERE GIVEN. MY WORD WAS ‘REPETITION’. FIRST WE EXPLODE OUR WORD AND THEN MADE MODELS BASED ON WHAT WE UNDERSTOOD ABOUT THIS WORD. LATER ON WE DEVELOPED CHARACTER AND PROGRAM FOR THE HOUSE BASED ON THIS WORD. I UNDERSTOOD REPETITION AS AN ORDER OF IN WHICH AN OBJECT GROWS OR EVOLVES. I READ FORM ‘SPACE AND ORDER’ BOOK TO UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT WAYS TO EVOLVE MY STRUCTURE. MY FINAL STRUCTURE HAD ONE FORM IN PLAN WHICH GREW CONSTANTLY IN ELEVATION.

WE WERE GIVEN ONE CASE STUDY BUILDING OF A WELL KNOWN BUILDING,OUR BUILDING WAS ‘THE WALL HOUSE’ BY ANUPAMA KUNDOO. BY LOOKING AT PLAN,SECTION IN THE PROVIDED BOOK WE WERE SUPPOSED TO IMAGINE DIFFERENT SPACIAL QUALITIES IN IT.WE INDIVIDUALLY MADE PLAN,SECTION TO APPROPRIATE SCALE AND THAN MODEL OF THE SAME.IT HELPED US UNDERSTAND ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS AND TO IMAGE THOSE SPACES.

FIRST WORKSHOP

WE WERE GIVEN ONE BANAL MATERIAL(PP PACKAGING STRIPS), AND WE WERE SUPPOSED TO MAKE A USEABLE THING OUT OF IT.WE DECIDED TO MAKE SWING OUT OF IT.WE WOVE IT ON A FRAME WITH NAILS ON IT AT REGULAR INTERVALS.THIS SWING WAS HOMOGENEOUS,LIGHT WT,STRONG STRUCTURE WHICH COULD BE HUNG ANY WERE.THIS SWING MADE BEST USE

MATERIAL USAGE

WE WERE TOLD TO MODIFY CYNDERELLA’S STORY INTO OUR OWN VERSION.WE THEN MIXED EVERYONE’S STORIES AND MADE A NEW STORY WHICH WE SKETCHED OUT. FROM THESE SKETCHES WE TOOK REFERENCE AND MADE AN INSTALLATION. OUR INSTALLATION WAS A PERFECT SCENARIO FROM THE STORY. ITS SHADOW PROJECTED ON A WHITE SCREEN. ONCE THE SCREEN WAS REMOVED, THE REALITY WAS NOTHING BUT SOME FRAGMENTED WASTE PUT TOGETHER.

IN THIS EXERCISE WE MADE A BRIDGE OF SPAN THAN 8 METERS WITH SUPPORTS ONLY AT THE ENDS.NO MID SUPPORTS WERE USED.OUR BRIDGE TOOK PEOPLE FROM THE GARDEN TO THE LOFT BEHIND CANTEEN WHICH IS A STORAGE SPACE.

THE BRIEF OF THE PROJECT WAS TO DRAW OUT SPACES IN COLLEGE THAT YOU LIKE, IN SERIES OF SKETCHES. A SERIES OF SKETCHES WERE DRAWN IN WHICH THE SCALE OF THE OBJECT CONTINUOUSLY MODIFIES ACROSS VARIOUS SPACES.

THIS WAS THE INITIAL EXERCISE ON AUTO CAD, THE TASK WAS TO TAKE A MUNDANE OBJECT AND DRAFT A 3-D MODEL OF IT AND THEN TO TRANSFORM IT INTO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ACCORDING TO OUR IMAGINATION. OUR OBJECT WAS A MOTHER BOARD AND WE TRANSFORMED IT INTO A IDEA OF A CITY.

SKETCH WITH OBJECTS

OUR CLIENT OWNED A MOBILE SPEAKER SYSTEM AND SPEAKER EQUIPMENTS SHOP IN CHOR BAZAAR. HIS SHOP MERELY HAD A CARPET AREA OF 1.5M X 1.5 M. IN WHICH HE WOULD TRY TO ACCOMMODATE ALL OF HIS SOUND EQUIPMENT . A SPACE WAS CREATED THAT WOULD MAXIMIZE STORAGE AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THE AVAILABLE VOLUME .

SCHDULE SKETCH

OUR CLIENT WAS A TUITION TEACHER WHO USE TO TAKE TUITION FROM HER HOME. SHE FACED STORAGE PROBLEMS AND SPACE PROBLEMS. OUR PROJECT DEALT WITH THESE ISSUES. WE DESIGNED A SPACE ACCORDING TO HER CHARACTER TRAITS, NEEDS AND WAS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING FOR HER AND ALSO FOR HER STUDENTS.

OUR CLIENT WAS BASED IN ALICE SPRINGS, AUSTRALIA.SHE WAS A 35 YEARS OLD, SINGLE WOMAN, WHO WAS A BOTANIST BY PROFESSION. A STUDY OF THE CLIMATOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF THIS AREA WAS FIRST CONDUCTED AFTER WHICH A HOUSE WAS DESIGNED, WHICH CATERED HER NEEDS AS WELL AS USED NATURAL COOLING AND VENTILATION TECHNIQUES, THUS REDUCING THE DEPENDENCE ON ARTIFICIAL COOLING.

DURING THE STUDY TRIP TO MAJULI WHOSE AIM WAS THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE OF THE INDIGENOUS NEO VAISHNAVITE MONASTERIES, MEASURE DRAWINGS OF THE STRUCTURES WERE MADE. TO UNDERSTAND THE UNIQUE VERNACULAR STYLE OF STILT BAMBOO CONSTRUCTION, FULL SCALE STRUCTURES WERE MADE AS A PART OF THE CLASS EXHIBITION OF 2011.

FARM HOUSE

A FARM HOUSE WAS DESIGNED FOR THE FARMERS, WHO COLLECT GRAINS FOR THE SATRA.BASED ON THE STUDY OF THE DIFFERENT SEASONS, THE NATURAL BEAUTY THAT EXISTED DURING THOSE SEASONS AND THE ACTIVITIES THAT FARMERS CONDUCTED IN THIS TIME. WE WERE GIVEN THREE OBJECTS-MY OBJECTS WERE A PLOUGHING MACHINE, A PEACOCK FEATHER AND A HAND GRINDER. WE WERE GIVEN CARDS(TABLES AND GRIDS) WHICH HELPED US TO ANALYSES OUR OBJECT. FROM THIS ANALYSIS, I REALIZED THAT ALL THESE THREE OBJECTS WERE USEFUL IN THE FARMERS LIFE IN SOME OR THE OTHER WAY. THESE OBJECTS GOT ACTIVATED IN DIFFERENT SEASONS. SO A BUILDING WAS DESIGNED FOR THE FARMERS. FARMERS IN THIS REGION DO SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES WHEN THERE IS NO JOB IN THE FARMS. THUS THE DESIGN HAD A FARM HOUSE WHERE FARMING ACTIVITIES AND THE SMALL SCALE ACTIVITIES CAN BE CONDUCTED CONVENIENTLY. THE DEEP STRUCTURE REPRESENTED THE SENSE OF MOTION/ CHANGE THAT EXISTED IN FARMING ACTIVITIES, SEASONS,AND THE USE OF MY 3 OBJECTS.

WE DID A CASE STUDY OF THE HAMMAMS IN THE WORLD AND STUDIED ITS RELEVANCE IN THE TODAY’S SCENARIO. OUR SITE WAS LOCATED IN IMAM WADA WERE ONE OF THE FEW HAMMAM’S OF THE COUNTRY IS LOCATED. MY CONCEPT WAS TO DESIGN A HAMMAM WHICH ITSELF IS LIKE AN ORNAMENT, UNLIKE THE BUILDINGS THAT ARE THERE ON SITE. WHICH JUST CARRIES ORNAMENTATION AS MERE FORM OF DECORATION ON THEM. MY STRUCTURE ITSELF IS LIKE AN ORNAMENT. THAT IS WHY IT HAS NO RIGID CORNERS , IT FLOWS LINEARLY. IT MERGES WITH THE GROUND AND LOOKS LIKE IT IS CARVING OUT THE LAND AND TAKING ITS FORM.

THIS GAVE ME INSPIRATION TO DESIGN A SPACE WHICH HAS TWO PARALLEL PLANES.ON ONE PLANE YOU PERFORM YOUR CREMATION ACTIVITY AND FROM OTHER PLAN YOU WATCH PEOPLE PERFORMING CREMATION ACTIVITIES. IN THE SAME WAY AS THE SOUL OF THE DEAD PEOPLE WOULD WATCH HIS BODY GETTING CREMATED. THIS WOULD ALSO MAKE THE OBSERVER FEEL THAT ONE DAY HE ALSO WOULD BE DEAD AND WOULD START A NEW JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD.

SITE PICTURES-1ST.PLACE WERE TEMPLE AND WELL IS SUBMERGED IN WATER. 2ND-PANORAMA OF SITE. 3RD-EXISTING CREMATORIUM.

WE HAD TO DESIGN AN EXISTING CREMATORIUM ON BHIMKUND ALI IN WAI.THE LOCATION OF SITE WAS VERY BEAUTIFUL WITH RIVER FLOWING NEXT TO IT. THIS RIVER HAS TWO TEMPLES AND A BIG AND DEEP HIDDEN WELL,WHOSE WATER NEVER DRIES. THE MYTHOLOGICAL STORIES MADE IT LOOK AS IF THIS WELL AND TEMPLE WERE PART OF SOME OTHER PARALLEL WORLD. HERE HE TALKS ABOUT HOW ‘there are two worlds of the dead and the live and how we always observe the dead and take inspiration from them. And simultaneously both the worlds are changing. OUR PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN AN INDIAN EMBASSY IN SRILANKA. WE WERE GIVEN 4 PROGRAMS-EMABASSY OFFICE, VISA SECTION, CULTURAL ANNEXXE, CHANCELLOR’S RESIDENCE . WE HAD TO PROJECT THE IDEA OF ‘INDIANNESS’ VIA THIS EMBASSY PROJECT. INDIA HAS A LOT OF VARIETY IN ALL RESPECTS, THUS IT IS DIFFICULT TO HAVE ONE IDENTITY AS SUCH. SO INITIALLY A SPACE WAS CREATED WITH LOTS OF VARIATION IN SPACIAL FORMS. DIFFERENT IDEAS/FORMS WERE EXPLORED THROUGH MODELS. EVENTUALLY LIGHT WAS USED AS A MEDIUM TO BRING OUT THE IDEA OF VARIATION. THUS THE STRUCTURE HAD MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF FORMS TO PULL LIGHT IN THE BUILDING.

THIS EXERCISE WAS BASED ON UNDERSTANDING THE URBAN FISHING VILLAGES. THE SITE WAS MADH ISLAND. THE TASK WAS TO STUDY THE CURRENT PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT PLAN AND THE EXISTING CONDITIONS ON THE SITE AND TO ANALYZE IF THIS D.P IS USEFUL TO THE PEOPLE IN THIS AREA. IF NOT, THEN WE HAD TO PROPOSE A NEW DEVELOPMENT PLAN BASED ON OUR STUDY AND OBSERVATIONS. THIS STUDY ALSO HELPED US IN THE SECOND SEMESTER LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT FOR DESIGNING FOR THE MADH RESIDENTS.

WE EXHIBITED THE STUDY OF DIFFERENT STRUCTURES THAT WE VISITED IN SRILANKA.

WATER AND WAI

RE-IMAGINING WAI FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ITS NATURAL ECO-SYSTEM NAMELY THE RIVER KRISHNA. THE PROJECT TRANSLATED HOW ARCHITECTURE EMULATES THE FLOW OF THE RIVER. THE OBJECT IN QUESTION HERE, CHANGES ITS FORM THROUGH ITS SHADOW, EVERY TIME THE DIRECTION OF THE LIGHT IS CHANGED. JUST LIKE ARCHITECTURE OF FORM CHANGES AS THE RIVER MEANDERS ALONG ITS PATH.

MADH-MAPPING EXHIBITION

THIS WAS EXTENSION TO THE GEOFFERY BAWA’S HOUSE. AN EXHIBITION SPACE WAS DESIGNED FOR SHOWCASING HIS DRAWINGS, WHICH ARE NOW STACKED UP IN HIS STORE ROOM. A LONG SPIRAL STAIRCASE WAS ALSO PROVIDED WHICH WOULD TAKE ONE TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL IN THE VICINITY THROUGH WHICH ONE COULD ENJOY THE BEACH VIEW. THIS VIEW HAS BEEN LOST NOW BECAUSE OF THE HIGH RISE BUILDINGS IN THIS AREA.

LANDSCAPING OF THE

OUR SITE WAS IN MADH ISLAND. THIS PLACE HAD A HILLOCK AND A ABANDONED FORT ON IT. HERE WE WERE SUPPOSE TO DESIGN FOR THE KOLI PEOPLE. CREATING A LANDSCAPE JUST FOR AESTHETICAL PURPOSE WOULD NOT BE USEFUL FOR THEM. HENCE, A DECISION WAS MADE TO CREATE A HERBAL GARDEN, AS OLD PEOPLE IN THIS REGION HAVE GOOD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT USING NATURAL HERBS FOR MEDICINAL NEEDS ETC. AS THIS LANDSCAPE WILL HAVE THINGS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THEM IT WILL NEVER BECOME A DEAD SPOT AS THE FORT IS IN CURRENT TIMES. THE EXISTING WALLS OF THE FORT ARE ALSO RESTORED AND REUSED AS NEW SPACE.

THE SITE CONSIDERED WAS A SAND DREDGING AREA OF RETI BANDER, KALYAN ON THE BANK OF THE ULHAS RIVER. THERE ARE LOTS OF ILLEGAL SETTLEMENTS AND SAND DREDGING ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED ALONG THE EDGE. DUE TO THIS, OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE TABELAS, SHOPS, AND THE COMMUNITY ETC ARE NOT DEVELOPED. EVEN THE ACTIVITIES OF CERTAIN PEOPLE EG-WOMEN, CHILDREN, MIGRANTS ARE DISTURBED.

....AFTER THIS, A NEW DEVELOPMENT PLAN WAS PROPOSED FOR THE SITE WHERE THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMUNITY, THE TABELAS, AND THE WOMEN WAS CATERED TO WITHOUT EFFECTING THE SAND DREDGING ACTIVITIES. A SERIES OF DIAGRAMS WAS MADE OF SMALL INTERVENTIONS THAT WERE NEEDED ON THE SITE. THESE SMALL INTERVENTIONS/ CONCERNS LEAD TO THE DESIGN. THE DESIGN ALSO MADE THE WATER EDGE MORE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL THE ACTIVITIES. THE DESIGN CONSISTED OF WOMEN SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES CENTER, TABELAS, A BHOJANAYA, A CEREMONY HALL, SHOPS, LANDSCAPING OF THE MOSQUE AREA.

THE SITE WAS LOCATED IN JUHU,MUMBAI. THIS AREA HAS MANY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES, THUS THERE IS A RISING NEED FOR YOUTH HOUSING. THERE ARE VERY LESS OPEN SPACES LEFT IN THESE AREAS WERE STUDENTS CAN GO AND INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER. HENCE THE PROJECT LOOKED AT DESIGNING SMALL PUBLIC SPACES FOR THE YOUTH.THE FROM OF THE DESIGN TAKES PEOPLE FROM BOTH SIDES AND LEAVES THEM ON DIFFERENT PLATFORMS VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY. THIS HOUSING PROJECT CONCENTRATED ON MAKING DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOUSING FOR THE YOUTHS. THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR SHIFT FROM THE TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURAL BASED ECONOMY AND THUS THERE IS A RISE OF A NEW OR EMERGENT CLASS MADE UP OF KNOWLEDGE WORKERS, INTELLECTUALS AND VARIOUS TYPES OF ARTISTS. THE BUZZ WORDS OF THIS NEW EMERGENT CLASS ARE -’INNOVATION, COLLABORATION AND DESIGN’. THUS AN EFFORT WAS MADE TO DESIGN FERTILE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS TO ENCOURAGE THE GROWTH OF THE “CREATIVE CLASS”.

4 PSYCHOGEOGRAPHICAL MAPPING

THESE Maps are visual manifestations of ‘the tangible’- landscape, topography, locations and the ‘non-tangible’- occupation, mental barriers, ideas of community. These ‘psycho-geographic’ maps become a tool to analyse these factors. In order to understand the complexity of interaction in Reti Bunder, characters were identified and their relationship with the context was studied . In order to map out various experiences, the characters were chosen on the basis of age group, gender, and the various activities embedded on site. Along with this, the experience of an external body on site was also studied to look at various perspectives.To place these characeters on the maps, their activities on site were studied and accordingly a path was engraved on the map. Thus the site and the characters constantly interact and inform each other revealing various layers of information .

BREAKING DOWN COMPLEXITY

THIS EXERCISE DEALT WITH UNDERSTANDING A 3-D FORM, DRAFTING IT ON RHINO, AND THEN TRANSFORMING IT INTO A NEW OBJECT USING THE SAME SOFTWARE.WE LATER MADE PRESENTATION SHEETS ON ILLUSTRATOR. MY OBJECT WAS A METAL KEY CHAIN.

BHADA, TAL AUSA, LATUR

THE THESIS SITE IS A VILLAGE LOCATED IN AUSA TAL, LATUR. THIS SITE HAS MORE THAN 60% OF ITS STRUCTURES IN RUINS. MY THESIS CONCERN IS TO REVITILIZE/ RESTORE THIS PLACE. THE REASON TO REVITALIZE THIS PLACE IS BECAUSE THE SITE HAS LOST ITS ARCHITECTURAL MERITS, CULTURAL MERITS, SOCIAL MERITS, STRUCTURAL MERITS, PHYSICAL FACTORS AND THE UNFAVORABLE NEW HOUSING. AFTER THIS THE PATTERN OF THIS VILLAGE WITH RESPECT TO THE TIME LINE WAS STUDIED AND THE REASONS BEHIND THESE CHANGES. THIS STUDY SHOWED THAT THE CORE OF THE SITE IS BECOMING EMPTY AND SMALLER NODULES OF SETTLEMENTS WERE FORMED AROUND THE CORE. TO UNDERSTAND THE REASONS BEHIND THIS MIGRATION AND TO GET AN OVERALL IDEA OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS VILLAGE, EIGHT FAMILIES WERE PICKED UP AND A CASE STUDY WAS DONE DOCUMENTING THERE HOUSES, SOURCES OF INCOME, LAND, FAMILY TREE ETC. THE REASONS FOR THE RUINED CONDITION/MIGRATION WERECHANGE IN LIFE STYLE, PROXIMITY TO THE FARM, FEAR OF EARTHQUAKE, MAINTENANCE, ECONOMY, SPACE PROBLEMS. A STUDY OF DIFFERENT POLICIES, MEASURES TO CONSTRUCT CLIMATOLOGICALLY FRIENDLY HOUSES WAS DONE BEFORE DECIDING PROGRAMS.
