CITY BEACH GYMNASIUM / POOL Core I Studio Brief III Advisor: Galia Solomonoff MArch I Fall 2013 ABSTRACT Publication 2013-13

A Surface Serves Both Sides City Beach tries to create a mild place for Sunday afternoon water recreation. Started with site selection, the project locates at a place where no shadow being cast in the afternoon. Although liquid is always flat, but the ground that holds the liquid can be dynamic to fit different kinds of activities. When goes deep, it holds water, and goes up it become dry area like beach. Same happens to the underground area. By doing that, it is to stretch the pool to footprint size without changing the water volume.

Shadow Site Plan December 21, 2013 (Winter Solstice, cast longest shadow at noon.)

Ground Floor Plan And Sections The ground floor contains all programs except the pool area. Facing the Columbus Avenue, the 4:1 rectangle ration resembles the Frederick Douglass housing apartment and New York city block.

Site Section and Pool Sections The surface helps to define the upper and the bottom areas, as well serves as structural points when touching down.

CAPSULE TRILOGY Re-imagine the Nakagin Capsule Tower Architectural Drawing & Representation I Advisor: Josh Uhl MArch I Fall 2013

Future Vision In Every Age The goal of class Architectural Drawing & Representation is to train our drawing skills and graphic representation methods. Given by a list of architecture to choose, students were asked to graphically present the building in drawings, model and animation. I decided to take a step further. With three assignments, I hoped to achieve a difference in building itself through the timeline. By redesigning the capsule imagined in different times, the Capsule Trilogy project emerged.

Capsule 1972 Magazine Layout Page 1 Capsule 1972 was the original project designed by Kisho Kurokawa. It was a time when computer was far from well known by public, let alone the Internet. TVs, radios and magazines were the major news publication media. The drawing is an attempt to achieve the 70s magazine style.

Capsule 2012 Model Every age has a capsule that people feel free to imagine the future. Imagination is always based on current reality, that’s why the visual is always outdated. Due to the import of creative form software, and emerging building techniques, the new future currently in mind is basically a series of curved surfaces.

Capsule 2054 Motion Pictures Theoretically, it is impossible to vision what the people in the future imagine their future. However, it is true that the scale and functions of architecture will always stay the same with the biological and social character of human.
