“A fool tries to look different: a clever man looks the same and is different.” —John Buchan, The 39 Steps My father is a classic film buff and Alfred Hitchcock aficionado. Many of my favorite childhood memories involve stovetop popcorn, a cold soda and hours of Turner Classic Movies on the couch with my dad. His Hitchcock collection was a carefully labeled series of Betamax tapes organized by release date. Three of my favorite films sparked a lifelong love for the genre: North By Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much and The 39 Steps. There was something deeply compelling about Hitchcock’s espionage thrillers, where a regular Joe finds himself, through a series of unexpected and unlucky coincidences, in a highstakes race to save humanity. Perhaps it was the very idea that one ordinary human being in extraordinary circumstances could change the course of history that inspired me, but a love affair of the genre was born. In the stage adaptation of The 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow brilliantly imbues the play with comedy, mystery, absurdism and optimism that has captured the hearts of millions of people around the globe. In tour de force performances, four actors transform this tale into a 4

runaway evening of intrigue and entertainment. Through the eyes of our Everyman, Richard Hannay, we see how an ordinary evening at the theatre can quickly evolve into a death-defying hijinks, globetrotting journey that transforms our world in profoundly beautiful ways. Richard’s navigation of a rapidly changing reality, a sense of isolation and the fragile but necessary trust of the kindness of strangers feel particularly potent today. Spoiler alert: in the end, the guy next door is reaffirmed in the value of life, love blossoms, the integrity of our nation is saved and the impossible suddenly feels infinitely more attainable. Though The 39 Steps is best known to American audiences as one of the great Alfred Hitchcock’s many cinematic successes, it is known to British audiences in a rather different way. Actually, the story of the daring and debonair hero, Richard Hannay, was the invention of popular Scottish novelist, John Buchan. At times a journalist, historian, barrister, lecturer, diplomat and even Governor General of Canada, Buchan led a life of great variety and excitement. As he tried his hand at many different 6

occupations and interests, Buchan recorded much of his life in the form of adventure novels. Perhaps the most popular of these, The Thirty-Nine Steps, was an immediate success when written, and has
since spawned several film versions as well as today’s stage adaptation by Patrick Barlow. During what has come to be known as the Golden Age of the adventure thriller, Buchan’s stories thrived and catapulted the cult of the British hero to years of success. Born in 1875, John Buchan was raised in the working-class moorlands of Scotland. These lush and mysterious grounds would later become the settings for many of Buchan’s written adventures as he paid tribute to the beloved hills, pools and forests of his homeland. Upon finishing his education in law at Oxford, Buchan was called to the bar, though his career path quickly took a turn
when he accepted the position of secretary to the high commissioner in South Africa. Here he discovered the beauty of the African landscape and was introduced to a whole new way of life and an entirely new group of people, including soldiers, criminals and fortune hunters who would later grace the pages of his novels. When he returned to London at the beginning of 1903, Buchan’s life and career again took a turn. He dabbled in journalism, resumed his law career and even sought election to Parliament. His fortunes and his reputation rose considerably, and his career in law was cemented as he accepted an appointment to 7

partner in a successful Edinburgh firm. All the while, Buchan persisted with writing for his own enjoyment. He experimented with many different forms, including short stories, histories and biographies, but he found his greatest success in what he called “shockers,” his first work of real popular notice being The Thirty-Nine Steps. With this work and the introduction of Richard Hannay, Buchan created one of the most enduring characters in the age of British gentleman heroes. Following in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with his hero Sherlock Holmes, Buchan’s Hannay is nothing like the spandex 8

clad, super-powered heroes we know today, but instead is suave, smart and social. Solving crimes and outwitting evil-doers who were equally intelligent (e.g. Conan Doyle’s Professor Moriarty), these characters epitomized the Edwardian gentleman of the time. Continuing his heroic exploits outside of The Thirty-Nine Steps, Buchan’s Richard Hannay went on to star as a character in 11 books, four film adaptations and even a short-lived British television series. Buchan continued his own journey as well, exploring different places and occupations, but never leaving behind his fictional worlds through which we can live our own adventures even today.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
”I must say, from the bottom of my heart, how delighted and relieved I am to find myself in your presence at this moment“ confesses Richard Hannay as he, in the midst of crises, is thrust upon a stage. After a time of isolation and global trauma, what is more necessary than coming together in a theater—raw and curious and full of promise—to question what we mean to one another and how that helps us define ourselves? Perhaps, I’d argue, remembering that the thrill of being together is worth fighting for in the first place. After a World War, an economic crisis and in a moment of great insecurity, our Richard Hannay returns first to the theater. Creating this play, for me, has also been a call to return to our sacred bastion, our reckoning space of togetherness in the theater, with greater care for one another. In this careful return, I remember how the life force of others is what most deeply inspires my own. From this extraordinary company of collaborators, great strength, humor and heart come running, and this brings me great hope. Hope and haddock. Barlow writes: “the finest comedy comes from the greatest truth.” I’d say, too, the finest truth comes from the greatest pursuit: the pursuit to find meaning in life, to find love, hope, peace. In these, our greatest pursuits, we discover that the greatest truths are rarely discovered alone–one being that we have a deep need to be together and to be together well. In our pursuit, strangers become threats and become 14

lifelines, friends become family, a map of how to find what we are looking for becomes extremely unruly, and somewhere in the quest we meet this truth: that we need one another to live. In this truth, hope comes running. We come to the theater, because amidst the experience—the laughter, heartbreak and surprise—we remember we are never truly alone. Between mayhem and mystery in this play, I warn you, you will become an accomplice—a part of the purpose— of these actors, these characters, in their pursuits, and in turn, they will become a part of yours. Here, in this remarkable place of meeting others, eye to eye, heart to heart, the deepest part of ourselves may remember that our well-being and our joys are directly connected to that of our fellow humans, our earth, our world. I hope, in this satire of saving the world, we might remember how one another makes our world worth saving. I hope that in The 39 Steps, we find moments of discovery, laughter and surprise together. In that togetherness, may we find the thrill of hope. Hope and haddock. In this moment of respite, reflection and relief, let’s pursue for a moment the possibility of a good world together, because being together in that pursuit creates, even briefly, the good world we may be looking for. ANTHONY FREITAS (Assistant Scenic Designer) is a New York City-based set designer and miniaturist. He has been so privileged to work with many talented and caring artists over the years from educational theatre to Broadway. Selected credits include Nine (WCT), Keaton and the Whale (Ghostlight Theater Camp), Bright Star (MHS—Papermill Rising Star Outstanding Scenic Acheivement) and Anna in the Tropics (Stella Adler). Upcoming work includes Sunday in the Park with George (Vassar College) and Sweet Charity (MHS). Anthony is a proud Wagner College alum. MAGGIE NELSON (Assistant Scenic Designer) will graduate this spring from The Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts, where she is pursuing a BFA in Scenic Design with an emphasis in Scenic Art. Conservatory design credits include Canfield Drive, Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and coming this spring, Amélie. At Hope Summer Repertory Theatre, she was a painting intern (2019 season) and a charge artist and scenic designer (2021 season). She recently worked for after-school program LitShop STL as a scenic design and painting instructor for girls ages
10-15, helping in their collaboration with dance company Ballet 314 to build set pieces for The Nutcracker. Her online portfolio can be found at maggienelson.design. SUMMER SHAKESPEARE (Assistant Costume Designer) is excited to be making her debut at The Rep! Brand new to the St. Louis area, she has been getting to know and love all that the city has to offer. For the past 10 years, Summer has been the owner and operator of a performance entertainment company in Las Vegas. Prior to that, she spent seven years at the Utah Shakespeare Festival on the stage management team. 27

ERIN RILEY (Assistant Lighting Designer) is a St. Louis native who is earning her BFA in Lighting Design at Webster University’s Sargent Conservatory of Theater Arts. Erin has worked with The Rep this season as the Assistant Lighting Designer on Dreaming Zenzile and cannot wait to continue collaborating with these courageous artists! This past semester, Erin worked with Chaminade College Preperatory School as the Lighting Designer for their production of Oklahoma, Webster Dance Department’s New Works 28

concert and is currently working on Burial at Thebes at The Sargent Conservatory. Erin aims to be inspired and to inspire throughout her career. JONATHAN SCULLY (Assistant Lighting Designer) is a fourth year student at The Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts, graduating this May with a BFA in Lighting Design. He is a St. Louis native who has been attending Rep shows for longer than he can remember. Jonathan’s excited to return to The Rep, this time as the assistant lighting designer. In addition to The Rep, he has worked at many other companies in St. Louis including Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, COCA, Metro Theater Company, Stages St. Louis and more. Selected
lighting design credits include Sondheim on Sondheim, Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again, Water by the Spoonful (Webster University) and A Streetcar Named Desire (Missouri Thespians). KAREEM DEANS (Assistant Sound Designer) is thrilled to be a part of the creative team on The 39 Steps. Kareem has been working in the field of sound design in St. Louis for the past 15 years. He has worked with St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, New Jewish Theater, Upstream Theater, The Black Rep and COCA, to name a few. Kareem holds a Masters Degree in Theatre Education from Fontbonne University,
and works for the Parkway School District as a Middle Theatre Teacher. EMILEE BUCHHEIT (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be returning to The Rep for her 11th season! During the 20192020 season, Emilee stage managed Angels in America Parts 1 and 2, Pride and Prejudice and The Mystery of Irma Vep. Other stage management credits include St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, The Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Variety Children’s Theatre, The New Jewish Theatre, The Foolish Theatre Company (NY), and Little Theatre on the Square. LORRAINE FIORE (Assistant Stage Manager) is a proud Equity Stage Manager with a BFA and MFA from Webster University. Lorraine is extremely excited to get back to making theatre magic! Some of Lorraine’s favorite Rep credits include Peter and the Starcatcher, To Kill a Mockingbird, Evita, A Christmas Carol, Oslo, Follies and Pride and Prejudice. In addition to being an ASM at The Rep, she also serves as the Stage Management Department Head and an Assistant Stage Manager at The Muny. 30

PATRICK BARLOW (Playwright) Besides his version of Lew Wallace’s Ben Hur, Patrick Barlow’s Olivier-nominated adaptation of A Christmas Carol has played Off-Broadway and London’s West End while his four-person adaptation of The 39 Steps has played in over 40 countries worldwide, winning Olivier, Helpmann, Moliere and Tony Awards and making Patrick the most performed playwright in America for 2012-13. Most recently, his rewriting of John Milton’s Comus has played to critical acclaim at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Patrick is also celebrated in the UK for his two-man theatre
company National Theatre of Brent, whose comedy epics include Wagner’s Ring Cycle, The Charles and Diana Story, The Messiah, The Wonder of Sex, The Arts and How They Was Done, The Black Hole of Calcutta, The Life and Times of the Dalai Lama and Zulu! They have won two Sony Gold Awards, a Premier Ondas Award for Best European Comedy and the New York Festival Gold Award for Best Comedy. Other screenwriting includes Van Gogh (Prix Futura Berlin Film Festival), Revolution!! (Best Comedy Jerusalem Film Festival) and the BAFTAwinning The Young Visiters. Publications include Shakespeare: The Truth! and The Complete History of the
Whole World. Patrick has also appeared in Absolutely Fabulous, Shakespeare in Love, Notting Hill, Nanny McPhee and Bridget Jones’s Diary. He is currently writing theatre versions of The Hound of the Baskervilles and Dracula.

HANA SHARIF (Augustin Family Artistic Director) has enjoyed a multifaceted theatre career, including roles as an artistic leader, director, playwright and producer with a specialty in strategic and crossfunctional leadership. She served for five years as Associate Artistic Director at Baltimore Center Stage, where she oversaw the day-to-day execution of all of the mainstage and studio productions, and was the architect of the innovative CS Digital program: a platform that pushes the boundaries of traditional theatre and looks at the nexus point between art and technology. Her other
achievements at Baltimore Center Stage include prototyping the Mobile Unit, strengthening community engagement, producing multiple world and regional premieres and helping to guide the theatre through a multimillion dollar building renovation and rebranding effort. In 2012, Hana served as the inaugural Program Manager of the ArtsEmerson Ambassador Program and launched ArtsEmerson Artist-InResidency program featuring playwright Daniel Beaty. In addition to her work at ArtsEmerson, Hana leveraged her regional theatre experience to freelance produce for Cast Follies

smaller theatre companies, looking to expand and restructure their administrative teams. Hana served as developmental producer and program manager for Progress Theatre in Houston, where she consulted with the Artistic Director on redefining the artistic vision and subsequent recasting of the ensemble company and lead strategic organizational planning focused on LORT market entry. During her decadelong tenure at Hartford Stage, Hana served as the Associate Artistic Director, Director of New Play Development, and Artistic Producer. Hana launched the new play development program, expanded the community engagement
and civic discourse initiatives, and developed and produced Tony, Grammy, Pulitzer and Obie Award-winning shows. From 1997–2003, Hana served as the co-founder and Artistic Director of Nasir Productions, a theatre dedicated to underrepresented voices to challenge traditional structure. Her guest lecturer credits include Spelman College, Sewanee University, UT Austin, UCSD, Prairie View A&M, Emerson College, Maggie Flanigan Studio, Towson University, UMD, UConn, UMass and University of Hartford, among others. Additionally, Hana has directed acclaimed productions of Porgy & Bess, The Who & The 33

Fellowship, and is a founding member of The Black Theatre Commons (BTC). She serves on the board of directors for the TCG, BTC, and the Sprott Foundation. DANNY WILLIAMS (Managing Director) became The Rep’s Managing Director in January 2022. An experienced arts administrator, Danny has expertise in nonprofit accounting, senior management and organizational development. Prior to joining The Rep, Danny worked at The Public Theater in New York, where he has served in various roles since 2006. Most recently, as Senior Director, Finance
and Administration, he managed the daily and strategic financial operations of this $50 million nonprofit organization, successfully launched an organization-wide intranet, partnered with the development team to achieve fundraising goals, and collaborated on long-term financial planning and analysis, including cash investment strategies, budget analysis and project management. Noteworthy and favorite productions include Broadway productions of Fun Home, Eclipsed, Hamilton and Hair along with Off-Broadway productions of Here Lies Love, Into the Woods, Twelfth Night, As You
Like It, White Noise and Rock Bottom. Williams has also held roles with Musical Theatre International, Warren Miller Performing Arts Center and Manhattan Theatre Club and has served as an adjunct professor in the performing arts management master of fine arts program at Brooklyn College. He earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing and theater from Fairfield University and spent a semester abroad studying at Regents University in the United Kingdom.

The Rep produces work in three series from September through April, all sharing the same high production values and commitment to presenting exciting live, professional theatre. MAINSTAGE Each season wew produce six plays in the Mainstage series, which draws The Rep’s largest audience. Performances are given in both the Virginia Jackson Browning Theatre of the Loretto-Hilton Center and the Catherine B. Berges Theatre at COCA. The work presented in the Mainstage series is eclectic, ranging from modern to classics to musicals, and benefits from the large space afforded by the Browning and Berges Theatres. STUDIO THEATRE Performances in the Steve Woolf Studio series are given in the Emerson Studio, a 125seat “black box” theatre on the lower level of the Loretto-Hilton Center. Studio productions may be new plays, radical interpretations of older works or experimental works. The performance space and seating configuration changes with each production, allowing the director, designers and actors

to craft work which requires a more intimate environment. We look forward to the return of the Studio series next season. IMAGINARY THEATRE COMPANY Imaginary Theatre Company is The Rep’s touring ensemble for children. Bringing theatre for young audiences to schools and community centers throughout the bi-state area, ITC’s productions value a welltold story while supporting state learning standards and nurturing a respect and love for the arts.
