It operates independently of, but under a mutually beneficial agreement with, Webster University. The Rep operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. The Rep hires directors and choreographers who are members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and stagehands who are members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Scenic artists employed by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis are members of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, AFL-CIO. The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists Local USA-829, IATSE. Financial assistance for this theatre has been provided in part by the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission; and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
It is important for us here at The Rep to acknowledge that the land beneath us owes its vitality to generations who have come before us in the spirit of making erased and silenced histories visible. We acknowledge that we are standing on the ancestral and occupied lands of many Native tribes that stewarded and cared for this land for centuries. The Illini, Osage, and Missouria tribes are just a few of the peoples that we pay our respects to. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration and settlement that bring us together here today and join us in uncovering such truths at any and all public in-person and virtual events.

As the curtain rises on our 2023-2024 season at The Rep, we extend our warmest welcome to a world of unparalleled experiences that celebrate the singular magic only found in a night at the theater! What a perfect time to introduce ourselves to you as your shared tour-guides during this season. We are both so deeply grateful to Hana for her visionary leadership and are honored to be supporting Danny during this next chapter as The Rep searches for its next Augustin Family Artistic Director.
This season we are thrilled to present an extraordinary lineup of productions that will sweep you off your feet and leave you with incredible memories. It is filled to the brim with awardwinning titles, literary classics and unforgettable music - all while uplifting the brightest emerging and established voices of our industry.
To kick things off, we dive deep into a multi-century exploration of “The American Dream” with The Lehman Trilogy. In this gorgeous, epic play, we embark on a journey spanning nearly 200 years, witnessing a single family’s triumphs, struggles and hopes. The play begins with Henry Lehman leaving Bavaria in 1844, at the age of 21, in search of a better life on U.S. soil - the genesis of their storied and complicated history. This grounds us in the reality that, at its core, this is ultimately a quintessential immigrant story that poses the question of what it means to leave home in search of new shores and explores the idea of who we allow ourselves to become on that journey.
The Lehman Trilogy is a theatrical masterpiece that has garnered international acclaim and recognition, winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2022. Anchored by three staggeringly virtuosic performances, the Broadway production of The Lehman Trilogy is the first show in Broadway history to have 3 actors nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Play.
Our stunning production, helmed by veteran stage director Carey Perloff, features dazzling performances by the brilliant trio of Firdous Bamji, Joshua David Robinson and Scott Wentworth who play Mayer, Emanuel and Henry Lehman, respectively, but also combine to bring over 50 characters to life!
We invite you to immerse yourself in this spectacular saga of the Lehman family as their lives unfold across generations and witness the remarkable tale that captures the essence of ambition, resilience and the pursuit of both ‘being’ an American, and the American Dream.
As we present this story that wrestles with nearly two hundred years of American history, it’s important to note that no one single piece of theater can exhaustively encompass all of the nuance, and complexities of a diasporic experience. If anything you see onstage sparks your curiosity, we invite you to lean into that impulse and engage with the dramaturgical resources we’ve provided, as well as reach out to the many historical and cultural resources in the Greater St. Louis Area.
Thank you again so much for joining us and we hope you enjoy the show!
Yours,
Becks Redman & Reggie D. White ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTORSWelcome to THE LEHMAN TRILOGY! I was immediately intrigued when I was asked to direct the first American production of this fascinating epic, in part because the story of the Lehman brothers, German Jewish immigrants to the American South, had echoes in my father’s Polish Jewish heritage and his upbringing in New Orleans. I was particularly curious to explore the early sections of the play in which Henry Lehman arrives in Montgomery, Alabama in 1844 and tries to establish a new life for himself. For European Jews, the miracle of arriving in America in the nineteenth century included the opportunity to become citizens and to have their rights and safety protected, something impossible for Jews in most parts of the world at that time. It’s no wonder that the Lehman brothers, particularly the youngest, Mayer, felt attachment and gratitude to the American South, a place that had given them a future.
And yet they built that future upon cotton planted and harvested by enslaved Blacks. The brothers were middlemen: they didn’t own the plantations that produced cotton, but they certainly profited by the cotton trade, and continued to profit throughout the Civil War, during which they figured out ways to smuggle raw cotton across state lines and sell it in England to companies still trading with America. The relationship of new Jewish immigrants to the Black population in Montgomery is a difficult subject, one of the many we’ve wrestled with in the process of putting this complex story on stage. In many ways, the Lehmans epitomize the deep contradictions inherent in the myth of the American dream: we valorize the rewards that can result from risk-taking and vision while lamenting the horrors of exploitation that those risks so often entail. The Lehman brothers were nothing if not resilient: each setback they encountered prompted new ways forward. But as the firm became more and more disassociated from trade in actual commodities (cotton, coffee, sugar, railroads) and moved towards manipulating opaque financial instruments (in particular, bundled sub-prime mortgages), the center couldn’t hold. If the early triumphs of the Lehman brothers were connected to family and legacy, the firm collapsed in
2008 without a single Lehman left in the office. What had really happened to cause the demise? THE LEHMAN TRILOGY tells that tale.
We have chosen to perform this play as a ghost story; thus the narrative is mostly carried by the three brothers themselves, either living or dead, as they experience their family’s journey over 150 years. Our version of the tale starts inside a single wooden cotton crate, which multiplies over time as the business grows. It is accompanied by a live musician performing a score by Mark Bennett that moves from the alto clarinet strains of early Jewish music to the saxophone and flute of Southern spirituals to the rhythms of popular music and the cacophony of electronic trading floors. Most importantly, the entire epic is carried by just three actors. Watching Scott Wentworth, Joshua Robinson and Firdous Bamji create dozens of vivid characters, from a German immigrant to a young southern belle to an aged Rabbi to the Governor of Alabama without ever changing costume or leaving the stage, has made the process of working on this play particularly exciting. At each moment, these artists call upon the imaginations of you, the audience, to fill in the details and complete the transformation. We’re thrilled that the Repertory Theater of St. Louis has invited us to collaborate with you in experiencing this wild tale of the rise and fall of the Lehman brothers. Thank you so much for being here.
Yours,
Carey Perloff, DirectorTHANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS FOR HELPING BRING THIS PRODUCTION TO LIFE.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is the region’s premiere theatre for compelling, award-winning theatrical experiences that entertain, engage, and illuminate audiences’ shared humanity. As a dedicated partner with arts organizations in St. Louis and across the country,The Rep aims to expand audiences’ appreciation and understanding of the world through theatre.
The work presented in the Mainstage series is eclectic, ranging from modern to classics to musicals, and benefits from the large space afforded by the Browning and Berges Theatres. Performances are given in both the Virginia Jackson Browning Theatre at the Loretto-Hilton Center and the Catherine B. Berges Theatre at COCA.
