OUR LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT It is important for us here at The Rep to acknowledge that the land beneath us owes its vitality to generations who have come before us in the spirit of making erased and silenced histories visible. We acknowledge that we are standing on the ancestral and occupied lands of many Native tribes that stewarded and cared for this land for centuries. The Illini, Osage, and Missouria tribes are just a few of the peoples that we pay our respects to. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration and settlement that bring us together here today and join us in uncovering such truths at any and all public in-person and virtual events. WELCOME As we savor the joy and wonder of another holiday season, we extend our deepest gratitude for your presence here at our treasured Loretto-Hilton Center. And as the weather chills and our hearts warm, what better way to celebrate this most wonderful time of the year than with one of the most beloved holiday stories ever told, It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, our much-awaited production that brings the rich spirit of this special time to life. Part of what makes this production particularly exciting is our enthusiasm to present a stunning production with an entirely local St. Louis cast. These artists’ (including three students from Webster University’s Sargent Conservatory) incredible talent, creativity, and passion shine brilliantly, and we cannot wait for you to bask in their glow. We’re sure many of you are fans of the classic Jimmy Stewart film, but even if you’ve never before promised to “lasso the moon” for anyone, trust us, you’re in for a treat. At its core, this timeless tale illustrates the immense impact of love, community, and simple acts of kindness that can change lives. It speaks to our deepest human desire for finding purpose and beauty in everyday moments, and realizing our profound effect on others without even knowing. Amidst life’s distractions and challenges, George Bailey’s story is an enduring reminder that, even in tough times, our lives are truly remarkable. We hope that this incredible production warms your heart and leaves you feeling inspired to touch the hearts of others through acts of kindness and generosity, both big and small. We also hope you feel so moved to support our work here at The Rep by making a tax-deductible gift to our “Rally For The Rep” campaign. This season has been such a tremendous success thus far, and your support will ensure that we continue to shine our lights brightly in the St. Louis community as a beacon of artistic excellence for years to come. May your holiday season be filled with love, warmth, and the joy of sharing beloved stories with your dear ones. We look forward to seeing you in the audience as we craft memories that will last a lifetime. Warmest regards,

DIRECTOR’S NOTE “ Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” Take a moment: Imagine this world without you having ever been born. What might be different? How many lives have you changed, inspired, saved, without knowing it? Without you, I guarantee, much would be lost. Don’t believe me? I’ll speak from my perspective: In this room today, you are a crucial participant to our story. In your being here is the opportunity to co-create a story, to build momentum towards collective joy, strengthening our invaluable spirits and empowering our priceless, essential hearts in the process. As a man stands on the precipice of a corrupt world ready to jump, a final selfless act forces him to reckon with a living more valuable than all the coinage in the universe. In an attempt to heal from war, and to protect their deepest joy—one another—against the onslaught of continued greed-fueled dehumanization, an ensemble of players conjure up a radio play to reinvigorate hope for the holidays. Yes, I’m talking about these actors and this company right here at The Rep—but also the company back in 1947 performing this very radio play in the Lux Radio Hour lead by story champions Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. Celebrating beloved community, It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play also celebrates the capacity in us all to be one another’s greatest gifts—the architects of a world worth saving. What could be more glamorous than being an architect? George Bailey wants to be an architect, and in a metaphysical way he already is. In this radio world, when we take away the physical architecture of the town, the building materials of a community come running. You, me, us together. As we listen with one another more closely, building this community
becomes pleasurable, empowering and full of surprises–just like making a live radio play. George Bailey wants to build things.“Skyscrapers, you name it…”he says, but he’s been building—as we all have—something more powerful than skyscrapers his whole existence. He’s been building a wonderful life—a wonderful, precious, imperfect life made even more wonderful thanks to all the wonderful lives around it. So, your laughter, applause, sniffles, candy wrappers- you are all collectively responsible for the architecture of this story using your vast untethered Bailey-like imaginations. Just as we, the audience, are confronted with turning a mountain of crunching cereal into breaking ice with our minds, so George is confronted with shifting his perspective to the unlikely: an angel, without wings, coming to earth to save his life. Like George, shift your perspective and listen for the possibility of the divine that we cannot readily see, but that comes to life in the connections between us all. May we bring, with humility, a deeper recognition to one another as the spectacular, sublime and spiritual architects we are. May our capacity to be heart forward—to recognize and care for one another, in turn, reveal our best selves in the process. With gratitude for your loud hearts and silent cell phones, Kate Bergstrom, director

PLAYWRIGHT Q&A
Q. Why do you think the story of It’s A Wonderful Life is such a beloved classic? What is still relevant about it today? A. I believe It’s a Wonderful Life remains a beloved classic because of its timeless message and the way it makes us feel. The lessons that George learns over the course of the story are relatable to each of us, which is one of the main reasons the story remains relevant to each new generation. The realization of all the lives we impact and coming together as a community to help each other is at the heart of the story. Q. What gave you the inspiration to adapt this piece into a radio play? A. I originally adapted It’s a Wonderful Life as a full-stage play with over a dozen actors and sets and all the trappings of a traditional theatrical experience. After this version was produced a few times, I decided to remix the material in the style of a golden era radio play. I’ve always been interested in exploring different styles of theatrical storytelling and realized that the story was set in the live radio play period. In doing this new adaptation, the material suddenly became fresh and exciting as far as the casting and staging possibilities, making it more flexible for productions of all sizes. Radio has often been called “the theatre of the mind” and this storytelling world engages the audiences and their imagination in a magical way. I find that this hybrid is what gives this adaptation its wings.

BIOGRAPHIES Q&A PLAYWRIGHT
Q. What resonates with you about It’s A Wonderful Life? What does your particular adaptation mean to you? A. The first time I saw It’s a Wonderful Life, it hit me in a way no film had before and few have since. I was a tween when I first saw it, and there was something about it that seemed so timeless and touching. The opportunity to adapt this beautiful story into a play has become the cornerstone of my career as a playwright. …Wonderful Life has given me the opportunity to meet theatre people from all over the world, personallyand professionally, leading to lifelong friendships and developing new plays as well. Q. What are you hoping audiences will take away after seeing this play? A. My hope for the audience is to take with them the emotional high from the end of the story into their lives and worlds. And my wish for you and yours, the happiest of holidays!

When Colin, an avid hockey player, started experiencing balance issues on the ice, his parents knew something was wrong. They headed to Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where a team of world-class cancer specialists discovered and removed a rare brain tumor. For the last several years, Colin has participated in a groundbreaking cancer study led by Washington University clinical investigators. This donor-funded research brings physician-scientists together to better understand how tumors disrupt the way the brain grows and works. Today, Colin is an active 18-year-old — a picture of discovery. Stories like this are ONLY happening at St. Louis Children’s, and only with the support of donors like you.

puss in boots
by Jennifer Roberts music and lyrics by Nathan A. Roberts
Everyone’s favorite feline fable is here to charm and beguile! The miller’s son is not finding life easy, with barely a penny to his name and no inheritance from his father, save for a useless cat and a pair of too-small boots. But this cat hides a secret: She can talk! And sing! And she has a plan to take them from the poor house to a princely castle. But how long can this extraordinary kitty keep up the ruse before the cat is out of the bag? Bring the whole family and share the legend of Puss in Boots.
