The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is a fully professional theatrical operation belonging to the League of Resident Theatres, the League of St. Louis Theatres, and is a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group, Inc., the national service organization for the not-for-profit professional theatre. It operates independently of, but under a mutually beneficial agreement with, Webster University. The Rep operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. The Rep hires directors and choreographers who are members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and stagehands who are members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. In the spring of 2018, I had an opportunity to see a workshop of a new play that stayed with me long after the performance. In the heat of a series of investigative reports highlighting the sexual misconduct and abuses of celebrities, politicians and businessmen, Steph Del Rosso’s funny and searing satire touches on the pulse of the underlying question of what rehabilitation and forgiveness look like in a world that no longer ignores the agency and autonomy of women. I was so compelled by the journey that I knew I wanted to be part of its future life. It is a great honor to produce the world premiere of Steph Del Rosso’s The Gradient. We are undoubtedly bearing witness to the launch of a brilliant, brave, ferocious new voice in the American Theatre. The Gradient transports us to the not-so-distant future, at a new facility that takes people accused of sexual misconduct and rehabilitates them into responsible citizens. Using self-help, self-improvement and self-actualization tools, The Gradient challenges our notions of politely sanitized, commodified systems of evolution. This smart, insightful work surfaces the complexity of the collision of unmet expectations, disillusionment, hope, power and influence with humor. This bold new piece also holds our feet to the fire and begs the question: Can we mass-produce forgiveness? I look forward to stepping into The Gradient with each of you.

“ WELCOME TO THE GRADIENT. TELLME,WHATBRINGSYOUHERETODAY?” In Steph Del Rosso’s world premiere play, The Gradient, you will meet a team of characters working to rehabilitate toxic masculine behavior—as well as the men in need of mending. Using an algorithm to determine the appropriate therapeutic approach, these scientists will attempt to diagnose and treat toxic masculinity in its many forms. From men who cannot express the most basic of human emotions to those who “recklessly send dick pics”[2], toxic masculinity is an umbrella term used to describe behaviors that result from manliness equating to status, aggression and sex, where stocisim is valued over expression, and dominance is the ultimate goal. These behaviors have become so pervasive in our current culture that in 2018, the American Psychological 6

Association published new guidelines for psychologists working with men and boys that take into account the impact of toxic masculinity on the male psyche. These guidelines clearly state that “masculinities are constructed based on social, cultural and contextual norms.”[3] And that such soclialization can lead to “the high rates of problems boys and men face and act out in their lives such as aggression, violence, substance abuse and suicide.”[4] While the term toxic masculinity has long been used in academic circles, it became prominent in mainstream culture in 2017 with the resurgence of the #MeToo movement. Originally founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke, the Me Too movement began as a campaign to “give young women,
particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, a sense of empowerment from the understanding that they are not alone in their circumstances.” Burke writes in detail about her experience of hearing the stories of sexual abuse and assualt in her work with children. “I couldn’t help her release her shame or impress upon her that nothing that happened to her was her fault. I could not find the strength to say out loud the words that were ringing in my head over and over again as she tried to tell me what she had endured…and I couldn’t even bring myself to whisper…me too.”[5] Burke had been working for a decade when, in 2017, the allegations of sexual harassment and assault against famous movie producer Harvey Weinstein surfaced. People came forward sharing their experiences with harassment, abuse and assault. Alyssa Milano tweeted an idea that was “suggested by a friend: ‘If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote “Me too” as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.’” In just 9 days, #MeToo was tweeted 1.7 million times over 85 countries.[6] In October 2018, a year later, the hashtag had been used over 19 million times.[7]

Today, in the United States, we don’t yet have a cure. We live in a culture where every 68 seconds a person is sexually assaulted, where over 450,000 people are sexually assaulted each year. DIRECTOR’S NOTE
J.L. Austin, philosopher of language, coined the phrase “performative utterance” to describe the phenomenon of a speech act which, in the speaking, alters reality. Examples include “I now pronounce you spouse and spouse,” or “I bequeath my entire estate to my daughter,” or “you’re fired.” In short, words that have consequences. Some philosophers and linguists categorize apologies as performative utterances. But are they? Do apologies always have consequences? Does every apology fundamentally change the situation or relationship in which it is uttered? Or are some apologies not performative utterances at all, but instead simply performances, performed for the benefit of public relations, political correctness or quieting a complaint? In late 2017/early 2018 amidst the #metoo movement, many prominent celebrities accused of sexual harassment or assault issued public apologies, some of which seemed genuine and powerful, and some of which failed to meet the rather low bar of even saying “sorry,” nonetheless demonstrating any accountability or commitment to change. If you are like me, perhaps these high profile examples led you to consider your own life, and whether you have made or received sufficient amends for the wrongs you have committed or endured. In Steph Del Rosso’s The Gradient, she incisively explores whether tiny dents in the status quo, such as apologies that may or may not repair damage or change behavior, are enough to truly make the world a better place. And, if not, then what is enough? And how do we achieve it? I don’t know the answers, but here’s what I do know—grappling with the deep questions of the human experience makes the world a better place. Sharing stories together in the theatre makes the world a better place. CAROLYN MRAZ (Scenic Designer) has collaborated on over 70 world premiere new works including Off-Broadway musicals, immersive events, performance art and international tours. Carolyn earned five Hewes Award nominations in New York City (Cabin, Spaceman, I’ll Never Love Again and The Black Crook) while also working across the east coast on Kid Prince and Pablo (Kennedy Center, DC), The Sound of Music (Northern Stage, VT), The Wolves (Philadelphia Theatre Company, PA) and Pay No Attention to the Girl (Spoleto Festival USA). SADAH ESPII PROCTOR (Sound Designer) she/ her/Espii, is a sound designer, composer, and Barrymore Awardwinning media artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She works on a range of live, digital and virtual forms of storytelling. She is an alumna of Virginia Tech and received her MFA in Performance and Interactive Media Arts. Recent design credits include composition and sound design for Love Unpunished (Pig Iron) and Being/With (Nichole Canuso Dance Company), and augmented reality design for Chronicle X (The Shed) and I Have a Door Up There (Harvard University). She also designed sound for the virtual reality theatre production Pandora X, which was recognized at both Venice Biennale and SXSW. Espii has mentored and taught master classes at Cannes Festival, Institute of Documentary Film in Prague, MUTEK Montreal, Live Design, Brown University and Durban Institute of Technology in South Africa. Currently, she is teaching at Sarah Lawrence and is a graduate thesis advisor at Brooklyn College. She has designed visuals for the upcoming Futures We Dream exhibition at The Smithsonian, and will be sound designer for the Off-Broadway premiere of Is There Still Sex in the City? Espii is very excited to have her first show at The Rep and is grateful for all of the hospitality in St. Louis!
SARAH SLIGHT (Dramaturg) is a Chicago-based freelance dramaturg. Most recent dramaturgy credits include the world premieres of The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, directed by Jessica Thebus (Northlight Theatre); The Tasters by Meghan Brown (Rivendell Theatre); First Love Is the Revolution by Rita Kalnejais, directed by Devon de Mayo (Steep Theatre); The Burn by Philip Dawkins, directed by Devon de Mayo (Steppenwolf Theatre, SYA), and Welcome to Jesus by Janine Nabers, directed by Will Davis (American Theater Company). Alongside Jess McLeod, she is the co-adapator of a condensed version of The Project(s) by PJ Paparelli and Joshua Jaeger, which toured through Chicago Public Schools and housing conferences in 2017. For five years, Sarah served as a producer, literary manager and dramaturg at American Theater Company. She has also worked as artistic programs manager at Northlight Theatre, literary associate at Williamstown Theatre Festival and literary manager at Red Eye Theatre. She received an MFA from Columbia University and BS from the University of Evansville.

JAZ HALL (Associate Director) is a queer, non-binary, multihyphenate artist— director, performing artist, producer, curator, mentor and advocate who is elated to be joining the ranks of The Rep. They believe in the development of new works and the centering of stories with marginalized groups at the forefront. Jaz is recently back in the DC-area, where they completed their ALH Casting Fellowship at Arena Stage. The return to the east coast comes after serving on the Artistic Producing team at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where they began as a FAIR Assistant Director in 2019. Jaz is also the creator and curator of an independent QTPOC artist platform, WOMB, the creation space. Most recently, Jaz is in collaboration with the Empowered Artist Collective and Viterbo University as a mentor to and advocate for burgeoning artists. They are also excited about their work as part of the artistic collaborative, In The Margin, who, with B Street Theatre, are concurrently producing the New American Theatre Festival in October 2021. Jaz is a proud graduate of Howard University, where they hold a BFA in Musical Theatre.

ERICA LAUREN MAHOLMES (Assistant Lighting Designer) is an assistant, designer and technician for live theatre and dance. She has worked for Cleveland Play House (Lighting Apprentice), Illinois Shakespeare Festival (Master Electrician), Kansas Ballet Company (Lighting Designer) and Longwood Gardens (Performance Technician). She was a participating Lighting Designer (Group 22-Harvest) as part of the 2021 Collaborations of Merritt presented by The Michael Merritt Awards. Her design portfolio has been displayed internationally at the 2019 Prague Quadrennial as part of the Emergence Portfolio Library. She is an alumni of the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas, West Chester University (BA) and Illinois State University (MFA). She is a proud member of both Black Theatre Network and Design Action.
TOJO RASEDOARA (Assistant Sound Designer) is originally from Madagascar and moved to the US in 2009. In 2017, he got his bachelor’s degree from New York City College of Technology in Sound and Lighting Design. As a freelancer, his most recent work has been for Being/ With (Nicole Canuso Dancing Company) in Philadelphia as a sound assistant

CAROLYN IVY CARTER (ASM) is overjoyed to be back at The Rep as the Assistant Stage Manager for The Gradient as well as the Stage Manager for this season’s Imaginary Theatre Company productions of Tomás and the Library Lady and Puss in Boots. She is a graduate of The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University. HANA SHARIF (Augustin Family Artistic Director) has enjoyed a multi-faceted theatre career, including roles as an artistic leader, director, playwright and producer with a specialty in strategic and cross-functional leadership. She served for five years as Associate Artistic Director at Baltimore Center Stage, where she oversaw the day-to-day execution of all of the mainstage and studio productions, and was the architect of the innovative CS Digital program: a platform that pushes the boundaries of traditional theatre and looks at the nexus point between art and technology. Her other achievements at Baltimore Center Stage include prototyping the Mobile Unit, strengthening community engagement, producing multiple world and regional premieres and helping to guide the theatre through a multi-million dollar building renovation and rebranding effort. In 2012, Hana served as the inaugural Program Manager of the ArtsEmerson Ambassador Program and launched ArtsEmerson Artist-InResidency program featuring playwright Daniel Beaty. In addition to her work at ArtsEmerson, Hana leveraged her regional theatre experience to freelance produce for smaller theatre companies, looking to expand and restructure their administrative teams. Hana served as developmental producer and program manager for Progress Theatre in Houston, where she consulted with the Artistic Director on redefining the artistic vision and subsequent recasting of the ensemble company and lead strategic
organizational planning focused on LORT market entry. During her decadelong tenure at Hartford Stage, Hana served as the Associate Artistic Director, Director of New Play Development, and Artistic Producer. Hana launched the new play development program, expanded the community engagement and civic discourse initiatives, and developed and produced Tony, Grammy, Pulitzer and Obie Award-winning shows. From 1997–2003, Hana served as the co-founder and Artistic Director of Nasir Productions, a theatre dedicated to underrepresented voices to challenge traditional structure. Her guest lecturer credits include Spelman College, Sewanee University, UT Austin, UCSD, Prairie View A&M, Emerson College, Maggie Flanigan Studio, Towson University, UMD, UConn, UMass and University of Hartford, among others. Additionally, Hana has directed acclaimed productions of Porgy & Bess, The Who & The What, Fun Home, Sense and Sensibility, The Christians, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Pride and Prejudice (DCArts: Best Director/Best New Play), The Whipping Man, Gem of the Ocean (six CCC nominations), Gee’s Bend (CCC Award Best Ensemble, two nominations), Next Stop Africa, Cassie, The Drum and IFdentity. Her plays include All the Women I Used to Be, The Rise and Fall of Day and The Sprott Cycle Trilogy. Hana holds a BA from Spelman College and an MFA from the University of Houston. She is the recipient of the 2009–10 Aetna New Voices Fellowship, EMC Arts Working Open Fellowship, Theatre Communications Group (TCG) New Cast Follies

Generations Fellowship, and is a founding member of The Black Theatre Commons (BTC). She serves on the board of directors for the TCG, BTC, and the Sprott Foundation.
MARK BERNSTEIN (Managing Director) is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and has managed nonprofit professional theatres since 1982. He has led The Rep since 1987, a period characterized by growth and stability, strong community support, and responsible financial management. New programming initiatives have included The Rep’s Off-Ramp series (produced from 2005 through 2008), the Ignite! New Play Festival (begun in 2012) and various educational programs. Favorite shows from 30 seasons at The Rep include Candide, The Voice of the Prairie, Terra Nova, Six Degrees of Separation, Young Rube, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial, Arcadia, Sweeney Todd, An Ideal Husband, Into the Woods, Inherit the Wind, The Crucible, Take Me Out, The Little Dog Laughed, Souvenir, Crime and Punishment, Sunday in the Park with George, Cabaret, One Man Two Guvnors, Follies and the great Shaw plays: Saint Joan, Pygmalion and Man and Superman. In addition to work at The Rep, he teaches in Webster University’s Arts Leadership Program. He has been active in the leadership of the League of Resident Theatres for many years, having served as vice president, an executive committee member and as a member of numerous national negotiating
committees. Before coming to St. Louis, he spent six years at the Philadelphia Drama Guild and taught financial management for nonprofit arts institutions at Drexel University. He is a Sondheim fanatic, and travels the world in search of the perfect Sweeney Todd, the best goat cheese tarts and the best chocolate desserts.
AMELIA ACOSTA POWELL (Associate Artistic Director) is a producer and director originally from Denver. Before she joined Hana S. Sharif’s team in St. Louis, Amelia was the Line Producer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and prior to that, the Artistic Associate and Casting Director at Arena Stage in Washington, DC. She also has various credits as a freelance producer, director and casting director. She is a proud alumna of the Allen Lee Hughes Fellowship, a steering committee member of the Latinx Theatre Commons, a member of the Casting Society of America, a founding member of Closer Look Arts Collective, and an inaugural grantee of Theatre Communication Group’s Rising Leaders of Color. She is an adjunct faculty member at Webster University Conservatory of Theatre Arts and has taught master classes at The Growing Studio NYC, Brown University/ Trinity Rep, The Catholic University of America, Howard University, The George Washington University, American University, The Actors’ Center, Creative Acts and more. She holds her bachelor’s and her master’s degrees from Georgetown University. 21

The Rep produces work in three series from September through April, all sharing the same high production values and commitment to presenting exciting live, professional theatre.
MAINSTAGE Each season wew produce six plays in the Mainstage series, which draws The Rep’s largest audience. Performances are given in both the Virginia Jackson Browning Theatre of the Loretto-Hilton Center and the Catherine B. Berges Theatre at COCA. The work presented in the Mainstage series is eclectic, ranging from modern to classics to musicals, and benefits from the large space afforded by the Browning and Berges Theatres.
STUDIO THEATRE Performances in the Steve Woolf Studio series are given in the Emerson Studio, a 125-seat “black box” theatre on the lower level of the Loretto-Hilton Center. Studio productions may be new plays, radical interpretations of older works or experimental works. The performance space and seating configuration changes with each production, allowing the director, designers and actors to craft work which requires a more intimate environment. We look forward to the return of the Studio series next season.
IMAGINARY THEATRE COMPANY Imaginary Theatre Company is The Rep’s touring ensemble for children. Bringing theatre for young audiences to schools and community centers throughout the bi-state area, ITC’s productions value a well-told story

while supporting state learning standards and nurturing a respect and love for the arts. This season, ITC performances will be available virtually to both schools and families.
