BLUE MOUNTAINS AWARD WINNING BUILDER The Master Builders of NSW accolade for “Design and Construction under $500,000” in 2016 was recently awarded to Mark (the Hatter) O’Carrigan for his Hatters Hut design. He is known as “the hatter” having established the award winning Hattery in Katoomba where he expressed his creativity through the design and manufacture of high quality leather goods, with hats being his specialty. The progression from hats to houses is a logical one in his mind, “they both have to suit you, be well designed and constructed, affordable and comfortable, sit lightly and protect you in all weather.” Mark is a life-long resident of the Blue Mountains with a great love and respect for the environment and a deep understanding of building to suit local conditions. He grew up in Springwood, built his first home at Bell in 1982 and currently operates Hatters Hideout, a truly unique bushland accommodation business featuring a large natural sandstone cave. The gracious curves of the cave arch are the inspiration for his building design. His other great passion is true sustainability, with his anger rising with all of the self-labelled “eco-“ businesses that offer little more than fancy light globes and recycled paper products. Visit his display building at Bell in the upper Blue Mountains and you will find one of his Hatters Huts with downstairs being used as a busy café and offering tourist accommodation upstairs. The property showcases rain water collection, bushfire protection, on site treatment of all effluent through a composting worm farm, solar power generation and building design to minimise energy needs. Hatters Huts are designed as a modular portal framed building meeting extremely high energy efficiency standards. NatHERS is a national accredited energy rating scheme for houses. The basic Hatters Hut has double glazing, double insulation and can gain a 7/10 star rating or higher with some affordable variations. They are offered as a kit home, built to lock-up or completion. Mark is happy to work with owner-builders, and says the most cost effective way is get it built to lock-up, including full home warranty insurance on the structure, then finish it at your leisure. The internal floor plan is highly flexible. Having been a volunteer fire fighter for 20 years Mark also has extensive experience in bushfire situations, not just text book theories. This has been applied to his building design. His basic design achieves a BAL40 rating with optional upgrades to comply with Flame Zone requirements. Exposed and windy sites are not a problem as the wind loading meets N4 requirements.
