A stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. The most obvious signs of a stroke are trouble with speaking and understanding, plus paralysis or numbness of the face, arm, or leg. A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). 85% of strokes are ischemic. Lifestyle risk factors include being overweight or obese; physical inactivity; heavy drinking; use of drugs such as cocaine or amphetamines. Medical risk factors include high blood pressure; cigarette smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke; high cholesterol; diabetes; sleep apnea; and, cardiovascular disease. Strokes, the leasing cause of serious, long-term disability, strike more than 795,000 Americans per year and kill almost 130,000 Americans annually – 1 out of 19 total deaths. While only lifestyle and medical changes can help prevent stroke, there is no cure. Rehabilitation can be slow and marginally effective, whereas stem cell treatments have proven remarkable recoveries. The Repair Stem Cells Institute, with 14 international stem cell treatment centers, is the world’s only stem cell patients’ advocacy group whose mission is to Educate, Advocate, and Empower people to make educated choices about their medical conditions and treatments in order to lead longer and more fulfilling lives.
