A look back at Atlanta’s History

Coca-Cola marked its 130th anniversary last month with the unveiling of a historic marker at Peachtree and Marietta streets in Downtown where the first Coke was poured on May 8, 1886. The corner was once the home of Jacob’s Pharmacy, where proprietor and pharmacist John Pemberton created the syrup for Coca-Cola, which he sold for 5 cents at the soda counter. Atlanta businessman Asa Candler would buy the rights and create the Coca-Cola Company in 1892. During the ceremony, the Coca-Cola Foundation announced $1.8 million in grants to benefit the Centennial Olympic Park District, which will fund the expansion of green space, new bike trails and updates to the park, as well as supporting efforts of The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Atlanta Union Mission and Children’s Museum of Atlanta.
