THE BIG READ IS BACK
Atlantans encouraged to curl up with a good book

The Atlanta History Center and Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System are teaming up to present The Big Read, a campaign to get adults (and kids) reading, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
This year’s book will be Luis Alberto Urrea’s Into the Beautiful North, and there will be related programs in September and October including a keynote address by the author on Sept. 17, 7p.m. at the Atlanta History Center.

In conjunction, younger readers are encouraged to participate in The Little Read with I Love Saturdays y domingos by Alma Flor Ada, while middle school ages can read Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan.

Atlanta Arts Festival
Returning to Piedmont Park for its eighth year on Sept. 13-14, the event features a juried show of 200 of the country’s finest painters, photographers, sculptors, leather and metal craftsman, glass blowers and more. The festival will also have live music (including Mudcat, Georgia Flood, Hannah Onley and Today the Moon, Tomorrow The Sun), food and beverages, kids activities and much more. Wheelbarrow Festival
Organizers cancelled what would have been the 19th annual festival, but expect to return next year. However, the Reynoldstown 5K-Race Through R-Town long associated with the event will go on as planned on Sept. 13 at 8:30 a.m. You can sign up for the race at Active.com.
East Atlanta Strut
Come on out and strut your stuff at the annual music and arts festival held in the heart of East Atlanta Village at the intersection of Glenwood and Float Shoals avenues. This one-day extravaganza will take place on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Attractions include a market with 100 artists and crafters, live music, a comedy stage, kids village, food and beverages, and the famous Strut Parade, which steps off at 2 p.m. All funds raised will benefit community projects and organizations. Candler Park Fall Fest
The Candler Park Neighborhood Organization presents the 14th annual festival on Sept. 27-28 with live music, local food vendors, 5K race, kids zone, and more than 150 artist booths.
