There seems to be no end of research that shows that people, older adults in particular, reap many benefits by bringing a dog or cat into their lives. While the documentation exists, there’s no better proof than the smiles on people’s faces as they cuddle a puppy or kitten.

The Atlanta Humane Society (AHS), dedicated to the improvement of animal welfare in the Southeast by providing quality animal services, offers opportunities for volunteers to care for and interact with dogs and cats that are ready for adoption. Several older adults in Atlanta have been more than willing to answer the call.

Retired teacher Doug Martin has been volunteering at AHS for nearly a year. After spending 30 years with children, he decided he’d enjoy devoting some time to animals.

Just Who Are We?

Some of the most interesting discussions while putting together Atlanta Senior Life have been about the exact meaning of the word ‘senior.’ People aged 60 and up are generally accepted as seniors, according to the legal definition., though the Social Security Administration traditionally has used 65.

Maybe we can go by the adage of “You’re only as old as you feel.” In that case, my age changes daily depending on how much stress I’ve endured—and that’s directly related to how much TV news I subject myself to lately.

I’ve decided to be inclusive with my definition of ‘senior.’ Personally, I’ll be steamrolling into my 60th birthday next year. I don’t dread it, and I’m not even merely resigned to it. I’m ready to celebrate it, and determined to enjoy my senior years by staying

vital and engaged.

A few months ago, I was at a birthday breakfast for a friend, a social worker who spent much of her career counseling AIDS patients. When someone asked her, “Don’t you worry about getting older?” she was quick to reply. “I learned a long time ago that aging is a privilege that isn’t available to everyone.”

“I like being around the cats,” he said. “I come in once or twice a week to help clean up and care for them, getting them ready for adoption.”

Martin usually gets in around nine in the morning and is gone by the time the facility opens at noon. He said the hours fit well with his schedule. Once he heads home, he’s got a couple of his own cat-children to care for.

“Eight weeks ago, I took home Millie,” he explained. “She’s a good companion for me and my other cat, Junior.”

Companionship tops the list of some of the ways that pets improve the health of their owners, or ‘pet parents’, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website. Cats are also credited with providing emotional support and improving a person’s mood and overall morale.

Terry Knudsen got drawn into volunteering at AHS after she helped an acquaintance adopt a dog. “I knew someone who needed a pet in his life,” she reported. “We came here and got a puppy. It’s been the best thing for him.”

Knudsen started volunteering at the facility this last summer, after going through the orientation process. Before retiring, she was the Administrative Assistant to the New York State Society of Pathologists. Today, she shares her Atlanta home with a cat, a dog and her husband Keith, also an AHS volunteer.

“I love spending time with the dogs, and walking the gentle, older, well-trained dogs,” she said. “My husband walks the big dogs!”

Some older adults may feel unequal to the task of housebreaking a puppy or training a kitten. A good solution to that problem is to adopt a senior pet. It seems to be a perfect match, since older animals are usually already house-trained and tend to be

quieter and calmer.

Stephanie Hart is part of a very special AHS program, the Visiting Pet Program. The program is set up so that a group of volunteers takes adoptable puppies to visit a nursing home, assisted living facility, mental health facility or hospice. Not only does the puppy bring joy to the patients, it also makes a good icebreaker.

“The puppy spreads joy by loving and cuddling everyone, but it’s also a perfect starting point for a conversation,” Stephanie explained. “Even if I’m not the volunteer holding the puppy, I can talk to others about their pets, find out if they like dogs, and discuss their memories of pets.”

Retired after 28 years of teaching, Stephanie has volunteered at AHS for more than 30 years. She’s part of two Visiting Pet Program groups, both of which schedule monthly visits to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta, located next to Turner Field.

Stephanie said, “My dad spent his last days at Our Lady, and I wanted to do something for them as a ’thank you’ for making his last days so peaceful. Combining my love for animals with Our Lady was perfect!

“The volunteers in my groups have become friends doing something we love. We get to socialize and we all enjoy being together. When we take a puppy to a facility, everyone—the patients and facility staff— interacts with it and us. It’s a very rich experience,” she added. “I think I get more out of this than anybody else does!”

Dogs and cats provide companionship, a routine and a sense of purpose. They also help relieve depression, reduce stress and lower blood pressure in people. One of the biggest

For the past 13 years, the Cherokee County Humane Society’s primary source of revenue has been their thrift store on Bells Ferry Road. In 2015, the group saved, altered, adopted and vaccinated over 2,000 animals.

The Humane Society of Cobb County’s (HSCC) mission is to promote humane welfare and responsible animal guardianship through educational community outreach, shelter, and spay/neuter programs. Their “Recipes to the Rescue” is a fund-raising project that makes a great gift.

Managed by LifeLine Animal Project, a nonprofit organization, the group promotes pet adoption and provides affordable spaying and neutering, among other services. Since taking management of DeKalb County Animal Services and Fulton County Animal Services in 2013, thousands of lives have been saved and adoptions have been increased by 300 percent.

Ready to lend a paw

There are times when owners find themselves unable to adequately care for their pets for one reason or another. Thankfully, there are organizations that can step in and help.

Several Meals on Wheels programs, including Cobb and North Fulton counties, offer support. Qualifying clients who have difficulty adequately feeding their cat or dog may be able to receive supplemental pet food at no charge. Information is available through each county’s Senior Services program.

Atlanta native Margaret Mitchell’s bestselling novel, “Gone With the Wind,” is 80 this year. Written mostly while she lived in a tiny apartment at the corner of Crescent Avenue and 10th Street (which is now the Margaret Mitchell House), the novel went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster film in 1939. Mitchell’s tale of the Old South’s final bow during the Civil War as seen

through the eyes of fiery heroine Scarlett O’Hara was her only novel, and she shunned the fame that it brought her. Today, the novel is viewed through a more critical lens. Some consider it a masterpiece, while many regard the book as a racist relic of the South with its stereotypical and derogatory depiction of slaves. Electric bikes let cyclists choose their level of exercise

It had been 18 years since Eric Hunger of Sandy Springs had gotten on a bike. Bad knees from playing tennis kept him from a once-loved form of leisure activity. Then he learned about electric bikes, which use a battery to provide pedal assistance for riders straining up a steep hill or needing an extra push after a long ride. His first ride on an ElectroBike, the brand of one kind of “e-bike,” as electric bikes are known, a couple years ago sold him on the product. “I rode 4.5 miles around town and had a blast,” he said.

Hunger was so sold on e-bikes that this month he opened his own ElectroBike store in Brookhaven’s Brighten Park Shopping Center. ElectroBike is an e-bike brand founded in Mexico City, where there are 28 stores; there are also several stores in California. Hunger is banking on what he believes is an emerging form of transportation in the U.S. by bringing the concept to Georgia and Florida, and then, he hopes, the entire Southeast.

“We have millennials coming in who want to commute to work. We’ve sold to college students who want to get around campus. And we have some people who are 75 to 85 years old and they say they don’t want to give up their quality of life,” Hunger said.

Hunger said his business does attract more leisure riders rather than competitive, hard-core cyclists. The bikes sell for $1,000 or more.

Rebecca Serna, executive director of the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, said she loves her

electric bike. She has a toddler who loves to be pulled in a trailer behind her. On the hilly roads of Atlanta, pulling a small child is no easy task, but with pedal assist, uphill climbs are eased.

“We want biking to be an option to as many people as possible,” she said. And electric bikes are an option for people who want to ride a bike but are intimidated by, for example, the Georgia heat or the hills of their neighborhoods. “The e-bikes will fill an important role in this arena,” she said.

Many e-bikes also have throttles which allow riders to not pedal as the bike essentially transforms into a scooter.

“We have had some people come in and say they are ‘cheater bikes,’” Hunger said. “But it’s up to you to decide how much exercise you want.”

Global research firm Navigant Research predicts electric bike sales around the world will jump from $15.7 billion in revenue in 2016 to $24.4 billion by 2025. More than 35 million bikes are expected to be sold globally this year, according to the firm.

Electric bikes are powered by lithium batteries and allow the rider determine how much help is needed during a ride. With the

Hunger said his decision to locate in Brookhaven was sealed as he learned more about the Peachtree Creek Greenway project, a 12-mile multi-use path and linear park that is designed to connect the cities of Brookhaven, Chamblee and Doraville and, in the long term, to the Atlanta BeltLine. In the Perimeter Center, there is also an ongoing push to ease car congestion by encouraging bicycle use with bike paths being built and striped in Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven.

Fall is finally here and it’s either time to get your tools back out for a fall garden or store them for the winter. If you are ready to hang up your tools after a long summer, don’t just store them and forget about them. Here are some helpful tips to get everything ready for the upcoming winter season:

Clean and store all hand tools or other gardening tools. Soap and water is all you need to use to get all the dirt and grime off. For the hard to reach crevices where dirt usually tends to stick, use some steel wool. Wipe dry and hang up.

Don’t forget to disconnect any outside hoses and store them for the winter. Also, you might need to shut off the water line to those outside spigots, if possible.

Store seeds in a sealed container. When the temperatures drop, many rodents look for something to eat. Your tasty seeds are a great snack. Seal the seeds in a Ziploc and place in a larger sealed container, preferably not on the floor. The trickier they are to get into, the less likely you will find them munched on in the spring.

Winterize any machinery that won’t be used during the winter months. You can drain the gas and fluids or add a winterizing product for any fuel left in the machine.

This fall, seniors and those eligible for Medicare must pay special attention to the decisions they face during an important election—the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP).

During this year’s Medicare AEP, from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, people with Medicare should understand that the choice they make can affect their health throughout 2017. Thoughtful research will go a long way toward making the best coverage choice based on your individual health needs.

The first step is to review your current Medicare health plan and analyze how much you’ve spent on health care during the past year, including hospital, pharmacy and doctor bills. This will help to determine the health care expenses you can expect in 2017 and whether your current Medicare plan meets your needs.

It is important to research all available choices, determine their impact on your life and be comfortable with your choice. Options include:

A C

Original Medicare (Parts A and B), basic coverage for medical expenses without coverage for most prescriptions. There is cost-sharing, or copays, coinsurance and deductibles for coverage through Original Medicare.

B D

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D), coverage for prescription medications, which may lower prescription drug expenses.

Medicare Advantage (Part C), which covers everything Original Medicare covers and may include extra benefits, services and prescription drug coverage through a private insurer. Medicare Advantage is used instead of Original Medicare for those who sign up for these health plans.

Medicare Supplement Plans, which pay some costs not paid by Original Medicare, like deductibles and coinsurance.

Medicare Advantage plans are steadily gaining popularity. Features such as wellness programs and personal care management services can be valuable in helping you achieve or maintain the level of health you want throughout 2017.

The end of the year is coming up fast and soon holiday plans will be foremost on everyone’s mind. Before the holiday season takes all your attention, devote a few hours to looking ahead to income tax season and do some planning now.

The first rule of income tax planning is to PLAN. Start by comparing your 2015 tax situation to where you are in 2016. Why? Primarily so you can cover all your bases and you won’t overlook anything that matters. Changes from one year to the next may show up in your capital gains, charity expenses, medical expenses, Social Security income, RMD (required minimum distribution) amounts, filing status, etc. Other changes may show up in your amount of income, nature of income or deductible fees.

Use an electronic spreadsheet program (like Excel or Numbers) and set up three columns. Label Column 1 as last year (2015), label Column 2 as this year (2016), and label Column 3 as next year (2017). Then fill in all the appropriate information from last and this year. It’s a good idea to include next year in your planning since it may be wise to defer some income to 2017, if possible, or to accelerate deductions into 2016 (especially if you’re bunching itemized deductions).

Once you’re done and the tax for each year (both federal and state) is calculated, you’ll be able to make your “What If” calculations. This will allow you to try some different scenarios and see which is most beneficial.

benefits of being around animals is the socialization factor. Puppies and kittens seem to naturally draw people together and get them talking.

For the last four years, Helen Finkelstein has been giving time and energy to AHS. She started out at the Mansell facility in Alpharetta, where she walked dogs, giving them much-needed attention and exercise.

These days, she’s at the Howell Mill location working in Admissions; she mostly washes dishes and does laundry. It seems a natural fit for her after retiring from 20 years in the food service industry.

“You’d be amazed just how much there is to do,” she said, “but I enjoy coming here. It’s a real pleasure to be with these people. AHS truly appreciates all its volunteers.”

Finkelstein added that the

flexibility of the volunteering schedule makes it convenient, too. She works for two hour stretches at a time, and can put in her hours anywhere from 8 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

A University of Missouri study determined that while all older adults benefited from the bonds with their pets, dog owners also benefited from the low-impact exercise they received while taking them out for walks.

“I’ve always been a volunteer, and I’ve always loved animals,” said Cynthia Hilden, explaining what drew her to AHS. A retired college dean, she relocated to Atlanta five years ago from a town with a population of 700 set in the mountains of Oregon.

Moving here brought her closer to family members, but it’s been quite a culture shock living in a sprawling metropolis in the South. AHS is one of the places where she can feel a little more at home.

Hilden has been volunteering at AHS for the past four years or so. She said that the facility is extraordinary—roomy and clean—and the staff is good to their volunteers. Generally, she devotes a few hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, happily doing whatever needs to be done.

“I feel very strongly about responsible stewardship. The way we care for others who depend upon us is a clear indication of our evolution as a society,” Hilden said. “I give as much love and care to the animals as I can while I’m here, especially since some of them have had bad experiences.”

She knows how love can turn a life around. One of her cats, a rescue named Quincy Jones, was in bad shape before she took him

home. According to Hilden, today he is big, strong and healthy. The most responsible and rewarding way to bring a pet into your life is to adopt it from a shelter. While there are no exact numbers, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®), estimates that, in the U.S., approximately 2.7 million shelter animals are adopted each year. That’s 1.4 million dogs and 1.3 million cats.

AHS adoption centers in Midtown and Alpharetta are open 7 days a week. Last year, more than 8,000 people found love at these facilities by adopting a new family member.

The AHS has many volunteering opportunities for seniors. From helping with adoptable animals, assisting their admissions team or working events, it’s easy to find a position that suits everyone’s interests and schedule. Volunteers need to commit to volunteering for six months for at least six hours per month. Volunteers are fully trained by AHS staff and experienced volunteers.
