This is no time to get sentimental

collin@AtlantaIntownPaper.com

My first instinct was to write about holiday memories, but there’s no time for sentimentality this December.

First up, there’s the Dec. 6 runoff to decide who gets Georgia’s U.S. Senate seat – Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock or GOP challenger Herschel Walker.

While Democrats have locked up the Senate after the “red wave” turned out to be a drip, Warnock’s reelection would give the party more leverage in the chamber and end the need for Vice-President Harris to cast tie-breaking votes.

While the runoff might put a cap on this year’s election season, Donald Trump announcing he’s running for president again means more political chaos to come in 2023.

Closer to home, Atlanta Medical Center closed just after midnight on Nov. 1 and by early evening the signs were already being removed from the building.

It’s an inglorious end to a crucial hospital that has been part of the city for a century. More than 50% of its patients were Medicare and Medicaid recipients and nearly 70% of patients who passed through the ER were Black.

Over the summer, Wellstar reported operating losses of $114 million at AMC and another of its hospitals in East Point, which has also closed. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Wellstar still turned a profit last year, reporting an operating income of $106 million.

The city has imposed a redevelopment moratorium on the 25-acre campus while it looks for another operator rather than see the hospital demolished to make way for apartments or offices.

Grady Hospital, which received an infusion of $140 million from the state and Fulton County for a quick expansion, said it has already seen an influx of patients in its emergency department and in the number of trauma cases.

Frankly, I find it unconscionable that Wellstar made this choice when so many Atlantans are struggling with their health and medical costs. But the blame doesn’t fall completely on Wellstar. Some of it belongs to Gov. Brian Kemp.

During Kemp’s tenure, six hospitals have closed in Georgia as he continues to refuse to fully expand Medicaid. That refusal prevents Georgia from accessing billions in federal funds that would help struggling hospitals.

My hope is that another health system in the state or from somewhere in the country will rise to the occasion and put the value of citizens front and center instead of money and politics.

Happy holidays and thanks for all your support. See you in 2023.

cover-up session for a woman with multiple gang and sex trafficking tattoos, covering them with Japanese peonies.

“She loved it. She cried. She was very happy,” Cooper said. “If you’re trying to move on in your life and you keep seeing tattoos from a previous life it can be hard to move on sometimes.”

Boyd covered multiple tattoos and a scar from a gunshot wound for one of her ARI clients. Among the approximately 30 she’s worked with, her first particularly touched her heart — a woman who was known for wearing big, bulky boots yearround to hide the sex trafficking branding tattoos on her feet.

“I remember her saying she just couldn’t look at it,” Boyd said. “I found out later that her friends were commenting on how she was wearing flip flops. How good that felt to be that last part of her recovery.”

ARI is already being recognized for its work, which includes offering therapy, an education program, and training nationally and internationally on the history of human branding and its use in commercial sexual exploitation.

Lamb, 37, made Georgia Trend magazine’s 40 Under 40 list last year, and she was selected as the Social Entrepreneur honoree in Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 2022 Leaders in Corporate Citizenship awards.

In 2016, Jessica Lamb went to a tattoo artist to cover a symbol of her painful past – a reminder of exploitation as a teen.

What she got, instead of peace, was even more pain.

“It was just such a horrendous experience for me. I really didn’t care for how I was treated in the process,” said Lamb.

She decided to take action for others whose unwanted marks came from traumatizing situations.

“I thought, I want to make sure that they are treated with the utmost respect and the utmost care and they’re not being judged or talked down to or sexually harassed,” Lamb said.

What she found was “an incredible network of artists in the tattoo and tattoo removal field with some of the biggest hearts for their community,” Lamb said.

Within the year, the East Atlanta resident launched what is now a network of trauma-informed tattoo artists and tattoo removal specialists that stretches all the way to California.

Lamb is the founder and executive director of Atlanta Redemption Ink (ARI), a nonprofit providing tattoo removals, tattoo coverups and support services to survivors of sex trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, self-harm, addiction and former gang involvement.

Since 2017, more than 500 “overcomers” have been assisted by ARI. One of them, Holly, whose last name has been withheld, says the organization saved her life.

“I was ashamed and so insecure of what was on my body & ARI changed that. They made me happy to be me again,” she wrote, in a message to Lamb. “I received 10 beautiful works of art from ARI to coverup all of my sex trafficking tattoos, and it has impacted me to want to make a change for young women like me as well.”

Applicants for ARI’s free tattoo-related services are vetted by a scholarship team. Through a new “Skin in the Game” initiative, they can choose to contribute toward cover or removal costs that can range from $100 into the thousands.

The 80 artists currently in ARI’s network either volunteer their services or work at a negotiated rate.

James Cooper, owner of Gate City Tattoo in East Atlanta Village, and Crystal Boyd, owner of Pür Ink in Alpharetta, have volunteered with ARI from just about its start. Both say they were glad to find a way to help others through their art.

One of Cooper’s first ARI clients stands out most for him. He did an extensive

Aside from her work with ARI, the mother of two works as an art therapist at safe houses and for programs such as Wellspring Living, an Atlanta nonprofit that provides recovery services for women and children at risk or victimized by sexual exploitation.

Mary Frances Bowley, Wellspring Living’s executive director, calls Lamb “a creative and innovative leader in the movement of restoring dignity to trafficked survivors.”

“The practical aspect of Atlanta Redemption Ink is to cover the tattoos which were brandings by the trafficker. But, what Jessica is truly providing for survivors is dignity and a way to envision a new future,” Bowley said. “Wellspring Living is so grateful to Jessica and ARI for providing this incredible service that helps the women that we serve to not be haunted by their past but encouraged toward a new life and a bright future.”

Dec. 6 runoff will decide Warnock and Walker contest for Senate

Although Democrats have kept control of the U.S. Senate, all eyes remain on Georgia and the upcoming Dec. 6 runoff between incumbent Raphael Warnock and his Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

Warnock earned about 35,000 more votes than Walker, but neither candidate crossed the 50% threshold because Libertarian Chase Oliver drew 2% of the vote.

Democrats clinched victory on Nov.

12, four days after the actual election, when Nevada incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto narrowly defeated her Republican challenger Adam Lexalt.

Both Warnock and Walker had already hit the campaign trail again when Masto won, and now it just remains to be seen if Democrats will have 51 seats, ending the deadlock usually broken by Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Because we are in a situation where you don’t have to have an even makeup of the committees — so that’s why it is important, mostly,” President Joe Biden told reporters after Masto was declared the winner. “But it’s simply better, the bigger the number the better.”

A win by Warnock would provide Biden and the Democrats a major boost in helping push through their agenda.

Early voting was scheduled to begin Nov. 28, which is the same date voters must have already requested an absentee ballot.

Early voting takes place Monday through Friday, typically Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, due to Georgia law and the Thanksgiving holiday, Georgians will only have one week to vote early before the actual runoff on Dec. 6.

It won’t be Warnock’s first runoff: He won his Senate seat in 2021by defeating then-incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler in a rematch.

“Here’s what this race is about, Georgia, it’s about competence, and it’s

about character. It’s about both of those things,” Warnock said at a campaign stop on Nov. 10 in Downtown Atlanta. “We need to be clear, this is not simply about passing this law or passing that law, and it’s certainly not about the process of Washington, DC. This is about who we are as Georgians.”

Walker’s campaign has been plagued by a constant drip of unflattering stories, including allegations of domestic violence, lies about past employment and former girlfriends stating that he paid for them to have abortions despite being publicly anti-abortion.

Walker was another candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump who failed to close the deal on Nov. 8, and the GOP watched the promised “red wave” dry up.

Back on the campaign trail, Walker called Warnock a “hypocrite.”

“He’s not telling you the truth, and he’s going to continue to be that hypocrite, that wolf in sheep’s clothing, cause he’s not telling you this either: You know, he had voted against our military,” Walker said during a Nov. 10 rally in Canton. “He said you can’t serve God and the military at the same time. Do you know we’re the greatest country in the United States, in the world, because we have the United States military, but yet they’re bringing pronouns, they’re bringing pronouns in our military. So, his pronoun’s gonna be ‘former/senator.’”

According to a report from Politico, newly re-elected Gov. Brian Kemp was lending logistical support to Walker’s campaign.

“Under an agreement that was finalized Thursday, Kemp will transfer his door-knocking, data analytics, phonebanking and micro-targeting program to the Senate Leadership Fund, the McConnell-aligned super PAC that is bolstering Walker,” the outlet’s Alex Isenstadt writes. “The super PAC will provide the funding for the $2 millionplus effort, which will be run by Kemp’s senior advisers and staffed by more than 100 field workers.”

No results yet on Atlanta Child Murder DNA samples from Utah lab

One year after DNA samples in the Atlanta Child Murders were delivered to a lab in Utah, there is still no report on what testing might have revealed in the four decades old case.

Atlanta Police Department officials hand-delivered the DNA evidence to Sorenson Forensics, located in the Salt Lake City suburb of Draper, with hopes of getting more answers for the families of the victims. Then Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in an Oct. 18, 2021 tweet, “It is my sincere hope that there will be concrete answers for the families.”

Bottoms announced in 2019 that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, and Atlanta Police Department would reexamine existing evidence related to the case.

Public interest in the case peaked again after the airing of two documentaries –“The Atlanta Child Murders” on Discovery Channel and “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children” on HBO.

Between the summer of 1979 and early 1981 at least 28 children and two adults were killed around Metro Atlanta. Their bodies were found in wooded or less populated areas.

Wayne Williams, now 64, was ultimately convicted of the murder of the two adult victims. He remains the lead suspect in the other murders during the two-year period, but questions persist among family members of the victims and in the community-at-large.

Williams continues to maintain his innocence.

Sorenson Forensics specializes in DNA testing and has a reputation for getting to the bottom of where specific DNA comes from, according to its website.

“The Sorenson Forensics laboratory is validated to perform an extensive variety of chemistries across a diverse range of cutting-edge forensics DNA testing technology platforms,” the company’s website says.

On the Sorenson Forensics Twitter feed, there is a recent post about a Detroit man’s DNA linking him to a 2000 sexual assault and 2003 murder. The lab worked on the DNA for the case. The DNA from the Atlanta Child Murders is much older.

Atlanta Intown made numerous attempts to learn more about how the forensic and DNA tests on the Atlanta Child Murder victims is progressing a year after making its way to Utah. Calls to the City of Atlanta referred us to Sorenson Forensics.

From the multiple phone calls and emails, one call from the lab was returned. An employee who did not want to give her name acknowledged that they received the inquiries but could not divulge any information on the progress or confirmation of any tests on the Atlanta Child Murder victims’ DNA.

The City of Atlanta is constructing a memorial to the victims of the Atlanta Child Murders on the grounds of City Hall.

Mall to

Selig Enterprises will build a pedestrian bridge to link Ansley Mall to the forthcoming Atlanta BeltLine Northeast Trail that will run adjacent to the property.

The bridge is part of a larger capital improvement plan for the 16-acre shopping center, which will include an outdoor space that will act as a “front door” to the BeltLine.

The Ansley Mall BeltLine bridge is slated to open in late 2023, according to a press release from Selig.

The second phase of the Atlanta BeltLine Northeast Trail will include 1.2 miles of paved trail, lighting and security cameras. The pedestrian bridge will allow Ansley Park and Piedmont Heights

residents direct access to the multi-use trail. The bridge will span 105 feet and will avoid any environmental impact on the surrounding nature.

“Ansley Mall, established in the early 1960s, enjoys a prime location in the

center of Midtown’s most established residential areas. We consider the BeltLine pedestrian bridge as an investment in these beautiful neighborhoods, whose residents have patronized and supported Ansley Mall for decades,” said Shirley Gouffon,

SVP at Selig Enterprises, in the press release.

“This enhancement to the property has been thoughtfully planned to create an authentic and approachable experience from the new BeltLine Northeast Trail as well as direct access to over 45 Atlanta neighborhoods via the trail network”.

Selig is in the conceptual stage of determining capital improvements to enhance what is now the rear of the property to create “an inviting sense of arrival” to Ansley Mall.

Ansley Mall, owned by Selig since 1972, is home to local shops like The Cook’s Warehouse, Ansley Wine Merchants, Phidippides, Brooklyn Bagel, Intaglia Home Collection, and more.

Pairing up a few of our favorite things for the holidays

Women + Wine

For December, we’ve prepared a quick guide to some of Atlanta’s must-have artisan food items paired with the perfect wine.

Fortunately for us, there are many local provisions to choose from throughout the metro Atlanta area. Whether you’re snagging some at your local grocer or stocking up during your neighborhood farmer’s market haul, these quick and easyto-make meals will give you a few extra hours back during this busy holiday season.

Bella Cucina’s Pestos & Spreads: Nothing says efficient entertaining more than a dip. Bella Cucina is known for its natural artisan, thoughtful spreads and sauces that are made from locally sourced ingredients. Owner, Alisa Barry’s elegant and artful approach to “everyday items,” as she puts it, will elevate any quick snack or dinner party. The Artichoke Lemon Pesto, as seen on Oprah’s “favorite things” show and an “O” list magazine pick, is a must-have always, but definitely during the holiday season when you might be in a pinch for something quick. Insider tip: Be sure to ask for the Warm Artichoke Dip recipe.

Suggested Wine Pairing: 2019 Domaine de la Noblaie Chenin Blanc, Chinon, Loire Valley, France. Average bottle price: $27

Stop Think Chew

free, vegan blend of organic cauliflower, San Marzano tomatoes, Calabrian chili, and other vegetables and herbs. Serve this on top of fresh pasta, and you have a meal in under five minutes. Stop Think Chew’s provisions can be found at their café, Daily Chew, located in Piedmont Heights. They can also be purchased throughout the city at your local farmer’s markets or even delivered right to your front door. Insider tip: Stop Think Chew will make the most gorgeous, creative, show-stopping grazing table for your upcoming event. Our favorite rule of thumb is “what grows together goes together,” so pair the Cauliflower Bolognese with a nice bottle of Chianti.

Suggested Wine Pairing: 2019 Collazzi I Bastioni Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy. Average bottle price: $28.

The Spotted Trotter Nduja: We can’t rave enough about their Nduja, a Calabrianstyle, spicy, spreadable pork salami that is packed with flavor. One cannot make a charcuterie and cheese board without including this Atlanta staple – it’s essential. The Spotted Trotter is a boutique charcuterie and butcher house known for its flavor, price, and sustainability. Don’t forget to grab a fresh baguette while you’re there. You’ll need it! While you’re there, be on the lookout for their slice bresaola. It’s life-changing. Insider tip: Preorder a restaurant-style ten-person or more charcuterie and cheese platter served on their custom wooden boards for your next event.

Suggested Wine Pairing: 2021 Macanita Touriga Nacional Em Rosé, Douro Valley, Portugal.

Average bottle price: $21.

Cauliflower Bolognese:

A brand that will always reign supreme for their grab-n-go items. Whether you need a pint of creamy hummus to serve alongside pita or crudité, or truffle chicken salad for lunchtime lettuce wraps, Stop Think Chew will surely be a household favorite. Julia Kesler, the brainchild of this holistic food company, works alongside local farmers to bring healthy, quality meals to your table. Be sure to check out their Cauliflower Bolognese. This popular sauce is a gluten-

Anna Bell’s Mac & Cheese: This side dish has officially dominated Atlanta’s at-home macaroni and cheese scene. The perfect amount of cheesy, smoky, and creamy is what makes Anna Bell’s the best in town. We’re so grateful that owner Kevin Mobley spent the last 15 years tirelessly perfecting his great-grandmother’s mac and cheese recipe that he remembers from growing up in her home in South Boston, Virginia. Now we all get to enjoy this southern classic in our homes. Anna Bell’s can be found frozen in markets and butcher shops throughout Atlanta and can also be shipped to your home. We love pairing Anna Bell’s mac and cheese with a richer white wine that still has gorgeous acidity to balance the creaminess.

Insider tip: Anna Bell’s comes in an assortment of sizes. Never purchase just one size. Get all of them. They are a lifesaver when you need to bring a side, or you can’t make a grocery run.

Suggested Wine Pairing: 2021 Domaine de la Solitude, Côtes du Rhône, France. Average bottle price: $22.

El Ponce Tamales: The quick and easy dinner that you never knew you needed. El Ponce makes traditional Oaxacan-style tamales wrapped in banana leaves. Choose between pork, chicken, or vegan mushroom and poblano

and it’s always served with housemade salsa verde. You can also purchase a frozen assortment and reheat them as needed. When you’re not dining in El Ponce, you can find their tamales at the Freedom Farmers Market on the weekends. Having an office holiday party? They also cater as well! Insider tip: El Ponce, hands down, makes the best salsa in the city. Not only are we wine lovers, but we’re also salsa enthusiasts.

The Future of Ponce

Portman Holdings reveals plans for storied stretch of street

Kay Stephenson has lived in Virginia-Highland for 26 years. In that time, she has seen significant changes along Ponce de Leon Avenue, the southern border of the historic neighborhood that separates it from the booming Old Fourth Ward.

The Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail spurred the massive redevelopment of O4W’s Ponce City Market, the construction of the 725 Ponce office tower, and a new Kroger to replace the aging “Murder Kroger.”

So when she heard about Portman Holdings’ plans to redevelop about a block on her neighborhood’s side of Ponce de Leon Avenue with hundreds of apartments, two office towers, and a buried parking lot with 1,000 spaces, she was not surprised.

“Anybody who didn’t expect this wasn’t paying attention,” she said on Nov. 7 while standing on the porch of The Bookhouse Pub. “The whole corridor has been improving in a really thoughtful way. I call it a restoration rather than renovation.”

Portman, the developer known for such projects as Coda at Tech Square and Junction Krog, was holding a happy

hour at The Bookstore Pub. Company representatives answered questions from about 20 or so interested residents about their plans to redevelop the gritty stretch between the Eastside Trail and Vesta Movement gym.

The Bookhouse Pub has stood for some 15 years on this stretch of Ponce. It would be torn down along with other longstanding venues such as the MJQ Concourse nightclub and dive bar The Local to make way for Portman’s planned new development tentatively called “Ponce & Ponce.” Chipotle, the only national chain business, is expected to part of the new development.

Portman’s plans have angered some Atlantans who say online the city continues to lose part of its identity as developers raze older, local businesses to replace them with tall, shiny new buildings.

Stephenson, who is vice chair of the Va-Hi neighborhood planning unit, said the majority of people who patronize the businesses in the assemblage of properties Portman wants to redevelop don’t live in the neighborhood.

“And so from the neighborhood’s point of view, we’d like some amenities we can take advantage of,” she said, such as new retail, a direct connection to the

Atlanta BeltLine, new sidewalks and road improvements.

She said she has spoken to some people, admittedly a small group, who said the people who made these establishments “the nitty, gritty heart of Atlanta” don’t come to them anymore.

Bill and Robin Conway live near where the new development would rise. For 17 years they have enjoyed the diversity of this area along Ponce, they said. Density is needed for a city to survive and thrive, Bill Conway said. His reaction to Portman’s plans?

“Wary,” he said.

“It will change the character of the area, maybe for the better,” he said. “But it will dramatically increase traffic in a nice residential area where people walk, ride bikes and children play.”

Robin Conway said she doesn’t oppose new development, but she enjoys having small, independent businesses like The Bookhouse Pub to walk to.

“I realize things change, but I don’t want to lose the charm that is our neighborhood,” she said.

Portman is under contract to buy the land owned by five different property owners on the condition the city approves rezoning the area. The company plans to file its rezoning application with the city in January; the rezoning process takes roughly six months.

Mike Greene, Portman’s senior vice president of development, said the Atlanta BeltLine makes all the property surrounding it valuable and the property owners saw now as the best time to sell.

If the project is eventually approved by neighborhood groups and the City Council, it will revive an area where change was inevitable.

Holiday gift suggestions for gardeners

The Environmental Gardener

We both find that as we get older it can be challenging to buy gifts for friends and family who don’t really need anything. But for our friends that are gardeners or lovers of plants, we have a range of gift suggestions.

A Living Present

Erica’s Pick: It’s hard to go wrong with a living arrangement in a beautiful decorative pot, whether it's a simple phalaenopsis orchid for indoors (almost foolproof), or a container garden for the patio with winter blooms. Try including violas, snapdragons, and herbs like parsley or rosemary.

Greg’s Pick: A garden’s caregiver knows the niches that need filling and which plants would be the best to do it. I really enjoy thumbing through a plant catalog (often ordering too many plants), so my first suggestion is a gift certificate from one of the many mail-order plant nurseries. I have always had great luck with Bluestone Perennials. They have a great selection of robust, unusual plants that come in compostable pots, a nice extra for nature lovers.

A Book

Erica’s Picks: It’s hard to pick just one book, but I still refer to my copy of “Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: Their Identification, Ornamental Characteristics, Culture, Propagation and Uses” by Michael A. Dirr on a regular basis. This comprehensive reference has long been a favorite of keen gardeners and was the textbook for many that studied horticulture in college.

Greg’s Pick: “The Complete Guide to Gardeners – The Plant Obsessed and How to Deal with Them” by Joseph Tychonievich is a light and humorous read with stick figure illustrations by the author. A fellow gardening friend got me this book years ago and it is 100 pages of laughter that I have read several times. It makes fun of the healthiest addiction in the world, gardening.

Pruners

Erica’s Picks: My favorite tool is my pair of Felco #2 hand pruners.

I don’t have any affiliation with the company, but I would be happy to be spokesperson for these bypass pruners which are sharp and worth the price (probably around $50 these days).

Greg’s Pick: Erica and I don’t always agree, and this is one of those times. I discovered Osaka pruners when I was lucky enough to go to the Chelsea Flower Show, where I got to handle about a half dozen of the best pruners on the market. This was my favorite; the design is remarkable. The lock is easy to open and shut, and the pruners cut as if you were going through cream, not wood. They cost a bit more than your average pruner, about $65, but I promise it is worth it.

Our Last Picks

Erica’s Pick: For the particular gardener, consider a gift certificate to your local garden center or a garden consultation with a garden design company.

Greg’s Picks: A membership to The Atlanta History Center Garden or the Atlanta Botanical Gardens will help get your gardener out of their garden. This helps support public gardens and their missions to make a greener world.

From Both: A gift for the gardener with no more room or yard to plant in is Trees Atlanta’s Holiday Tree Greeting. A $25 donation to Trees Atlanta supports tree planting, and a locally designed card is sent to your friend or loved one. All of these nonprofits have a myriad of unique and important educational opportunities that your membership or donation helps to support.

Your Next Home Could Be In… College Park

Where is it? If you want to be close to Downtown and the airport, then College Park is ideal. Just eight miles southwest of Atlanta and with a busy MARTA rail station located in the center of town, you could permanently park your car.

What’s the history? Originally known as Atlantic City, then Manchester, before settling on College Park in 1896, the town was built around the Atlanta and West Point Railroad depot. The name of the town honored Cox Collge (now the city hall building) and Georgia Military Academy (now the location of Woodward Academy private school). To continue the theme, the east-west avenues in the city are named after Ivy League colleges, while north-south streets are named for some of College Park’s most prominent residents.

What about shopping, dining, and things to do? Historic Main Street has undergone a renaissance over the last few years and is home to shops and restaurants, including Nouveau Bar & Grill, The Real Milk & Honey, Brake Pad, Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen, and The Breakfast Boys. The city has four parks, a municipal golf course and is also home to Gateway Center, an arena that hosts the Atlanta Hawks NBA G League, the College Park SkyHawks. College Park is also known for its strong connection to the hip-hop and rap scene, including being the birthplace of Ludacris, 2 Chainz, Jermaine Dupri, Monica, and

many more. What about homes? One of the most desired areas is the historic district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a mix of Queen Anne, late 19th/early 20th century Revivals, and Craftsman bungalows. You can expect to pay over $500,000 to $1 million+ in this area, depending on its need for renovations. There is also new construction ranging in the $400,000 to more than $700,000 range. The city has worked with HartsfieldJackson on noise abatement issues, but

hen we needed it most –during the highly stress ful midterm election season – nature gave us a spectacular gift: brightblue skies, cool temperatures, and vibrant color in tree leaves. I can’t remember an October as gorgeous as the one Atlanta just experienced.

Every tree in my Intown neighborhood seemed to peak at the same time in shades from scarlet and burnt orange to gold and russet. Now, our yards are littered with the shriveled remnants of these beauties – ready for a rake (my choice) or leafblower to move them to disposal bags or, preferably, to compost piles to enrich soil and help retain moisture in gardens.

Nature’s Food Factories

Powered by the miracle of photosynthesis – a Greek word meaning “putting together with light” – leaves are food factories for trees. They use sunlight to turn water (absorbed by roots) and carbon dioxide (taken from the air) into oxygen and glucose (a simple sugar); the latter is an important energy source in living organisms. Chlorophyll, a green pigment in plant cells, helps drive photosynthesis.

Fall’s shorter, cooler days signal broadleaved, deciduous trees that they must

get ready for winter, when there won’t be enough light or water for photosynthesis; they will have to live off food stored in the summer. As the chlorophyll in leaves breaks down, yellow and orange pigments that are masked by the green coloring in spring and summer become visible.

The brilliance of seasonal tree color depends on weather conditions that occur before and during the time the chlorophyll in the leaves is dwindling. Temperature and moisture are the main influences; the countless combinations of these highly variable factors ensure that no two autumns are alike.

Urban Forest at Risk

As I rake the crumbling leaves in my yard, remembering the beauty of October, I think about Atlanta’s declining urban forest. The number of healthy trees lost to development rose by 100% from 2021 to 2022. How is this intolerable trend possible? City residents repeatedly and overwhelming support tree protection.

The enormous benefits that trees provide – free of charge – are well known: shade and water vapor to counter deadly rising temperatures in cities, removal of air pollutants, reduction of storm runoff and flooding, higher property values, sequestration of carbon to combat climate change, improved mental health, and aesthetic beauty. What a list and all for free! Yet, we (read: our elected officials and bureaucrats) are allowing developers to toss mature, healthy trees to the curb, literally.

As one tree advocate told me: “Anyone with a computer and a bulldozer can download plans from the internet for a few hundred dollars and scrape land bare to erect massive structures. For convenience and speed, they grade entire lots.” Developers pay a pathetically-small fee established decades ago ($100 plus $30 per diameter inch for trees greater

than six inches in diameter) and plant a sapling in its place that may or may not survive. Having dealt with our region’s pro-development (at any cost) mindset for most of my career as an environmental advocate, none of this really surprises me, but it sure leaves me angry.

Kicking the Can

When Money magazine recently listed Atlanta as the “best place to live in the U.S.,” it noted, among other assets, the city’s tree-lined streets and its arboreal canopy, described as being, “so dense it’s been nicknamed ‘the city in a forest.’” Pro-growth boosters brag about our tree canopy, while they are often the same people opposing meaningful improvements to the city’s tree protection ordinance.

The Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association is particularly vocal in its opposition to tree protection efforts. Its leaders complain about red tape and

citizen appeals, while declaring they will experience economic hardship – that development in the city will stop—if any trees are protected. I’m still laughing. We do not have to choose between trees and homes. We can and must have both.

More than twenty years ago, the Atlanta City Council passed a tree ordinance to protect our city in a forest, that source of civic pride. Since at least 2014, if not before, it’s been clear to anyone paying attention that this ordinance is not working. For the past eight years—under three city administrations – citizens, tree advocates, developers, bureaucrats, and elected officials have met, argued, and drafted proposals to overhaul the tree ordinance, currently little more than a pay-to-play operation. There has been no progress toward greater protection.

Tree advocates tell me that homebuilder representatives have routinely roadblocked efforts to develop

consensus, yet offer no constructive suggestions. Kicking the can down the road is a favorite ploy of those who simply want to continue business as usual and avoid taking responsibility. Atlanta’s tree ordinance “can” is so dented from delay and obfuscation that it’s barely kickable.

The Dickens Administration

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has been in office less than a year and his plate has been full. He largely inherited this embarrassing failure to conduct what should be routine administrative work: fixing a city ordinance that governs a program essential to Atlanta’s brand and prosperity.

Since Dickens was inaugurated, his staff has secured agreement on a half dozen tweaks to the ordinance, currently before the city council. This is a good step that should be supported, but it’s only a baby step. To quote Martin Luther King, Jr.: “This is no

time to… take the tranquilizing drug of incrementalism.”

Dickens recently appointed Jaynee Prince to head the city’s planning department. With her past connections to the development community, she may know the players in the tree protection landscape, which could be helpful.

Prince should reach out to Chandra Farley, the city’s new chief sustainability officer, to engage her department’s expertise in climate solutions for drafting a new tree ordinance.

The biggest question for me, as I continue to rake the falling leaves, is whether Atlanta’s elected leaders will finally take responsibility. Are they willing to pass a strong, enforceable measure to save more of our leafy companions? Or, will they join their recent predecessors as a “nod squad” for developer rule?

After more than 50 years, the Tara Theatre has closed its doors.

Rumors spread on social media in 2020 that the Atlanta art house cinema – which has been open since 1968 – would close, but those proved to be false. This time, however, the rumors were true.

“As part of our real estate optimization strategy, Regal has made the decision to close our Regal Tara theatre as we continue to position our company for long-term growth,” said Regal VP of

The constant during the change in ownerships is that the Tara, named after Scarlett O’Hara’s plantation in “Gone With the Wind,” consistently played a mix of mainstream, art house, indie, and foreign films.

The Tara was one of the first in Atlanta to screen “Star Wars” as well as Atlantalensed “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Driving Miss Daisy.”

The only art house cinemas left in the city are Plaza Theatre in Poncey-Highland and Landmark’s Midtown Art Cinema.

The future of the Tara building and property remains unknown.

Plaza Fiesta, the popular Latino shopping center located at 4166 Buford Highway, has been sold to a Charlottebased real estate firm called Asana Partners.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the shopping center was previously owned by Sarofim Realty Advisors. The commercial real estate firm CBRE Atlanta represented Sarofim in the sale.

“Representing Plaza Fiesta in the marketplace was an honor and a career hallmark for our team. The property is the hub for the region’s growing Hispanic community and offers a truly authentic retail experience unlike any other in Atlanta and beyond,” said Kevin Hurley, a senior vice president with CBRE in a

press release. “We have been huge fans and patrons of Plaza Fiesta for many years and watched it thrive under thoughtful ownership and management. We are thrilled to have found a new sponsor that will continue to be a great steward of such a special property.”

Asana Partners, which also operates popular Krog Street Market in Inman Park, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Plaza Fiesta originally opened in 1968 as the Buford-Clairmont shopping center with tenants that included a movie theatre, Sunshine’s department store, Winn-Dixie supermarket, and a Woolco store. It later became known as Outlet Square then as Oriental Mall. Sarofim bought the mall in 2000 and refurbished it into Plaza Fiesta.

Georgia Tech breaks ground for new Midtown tower

Georgia Tech has broken ground for a new multistory tower at Technology Square in Midtown.

The 40,000 square foot complex will sit at the corner of West Peachtree and 5th Street – currently a parking lot – across from the Biltmore Hotel.

According to a social media post, the building will be the new home of Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business and the top-ranked School of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

This new project will also include a large plaza with street-level retail and an underground parking deck.

The building, which is still in the design phase, is being designed by Eskew Dumez Ripple and RJTR Design.

For Atlanta-based ProElite, music is key for athletic training

If you’re an athlete, Ali Barnes has an app that might be music to your ears.

ProElite is a unique training app that

teaches sports fundamentals through music.

As a lifelong basketball player turned trainer, Barnes started experimenting with using clapping and rhythm as a method for teaching ball-handling skills. It all came

down to “building confidence” and “muscle memory” for his athletes, Barnes told Hypepotamus.

“Kids’ confidence gets lost a lot during sports training,” he added, which is why the app gamifies drills through its videos and hip-hop tracks. Users can browse training videos based on specific sports or the star athletes they admire, be it NBA Guard Trey Burke, MMA Champion Tony Johnson Jr., or NFL Receiver Brandon Tate.

On top of basketball, the app has drills for boxing/ MMA, football, and will soon include soccer videos.

The MVP of the app launched in the Apple Store in April and has since gained upwards of 1,000 downloads.

The goal, Barnes said, is to “revolutionize the training space.”

Meet The Founder

Barnes raised a seed round from private, accredited investors and is now focused on creating more training content for users.

A native of Ohio, Barnes is a graduate of Miami University. He moved to Atlanta over the last year to grow his career in the tech and digital media world. While building ProElite, he also serves as Chief

Brookhaven at 10

Operating Officer for YG Sports at YOUNGGUNS ENT, an entertainment and media company that has been making waves in the digital content space.

As an entrepreneur, he sees unique opportunities to grow ProElite as NIL (name, image, and likeness) deals gain momentum.

He’s currently focused on securing partnerships and grants to continue to grow the platform.

SportsTech in ATL

The move to Atlanta was strategic for Barnes. While the city is well-known for its fintech and SaaS ventures, it is home to several growing sports-focused consumer brands.

Early-stage startups include MetricMate, a workout tracking platform, alongside Ane Swim and XiQ, two startups that recently participated in the Atlanta-based Comcast NBCUniversal’s SportTech Accelerator.

On the venture-backed front, Press Sports has been changing the nature of the college recruiting space as an athlete-specific social media platform, while PlayOn! Sports and GoFans have been working to change the nature of high school sports.

The City of Brookhaven is celebrating its 10th anniversary and Reporter Newspapers is joining the festivities with a special section in print and on our website, reporternewspapers.com. You’ll find photos, features, a city timeline, and even a special Cherry Blossom Festival Playlist compiled by Mayor John Ernst. Scan the QR code.
