Wish List bronze and white stone necklace by C.C. Skye

G
old may be hovering at stratospheric levels and the economy is still seesawing, but that’s not stopping well-heeled shoppers from indulging their jewelry habits. Retailers and designers say they’ve noticed an uptick in interest and sales for baubles, which bodes well for the holiday season. “There’s a demand for statement pieces, whether it’s an oversized cocktail ring or a dramatic cuff bracelet,” said Los Angeles jewelry designer, C.C. Skye, whose showy accessories have curried favor with boldfaced names like Halle Berry, Gwen Stefani and Kristin Cavallari. “They feel that we’ve been through the recession. We’ve lived it. We don’t want to live that lifestyle anymore. There’s still room for more celebration.” Customers may also justify the expense since jewelry can be reworked with a variety of wardrobe pieces, say retailers. “People may not be in the mood to buy shoes or clothes, but they know a fun piece of jewelry can make an outfit pop and can be worn again and again,” said Melissa Akkaway, owner of Beckley Boutique, which has locations in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. When it comes to fashion jewelry, which usually tops out at $1,000, clean and spare necklaces sporting initials and quirky pendants are a key trend for the holidays. Alex Woo’s dainty charms, such as initials and zodiac signs, can sell for $148 in sterling silver, $548 in 14

karat gold and $798 with pav diamonds. A new holiday addition to Beckley is Maya Brenner’s pendants in the shape of states (seen on the likes of Katy Perry, Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson) in gold and silver, with easy-on-the-wallet prices of $130 to $300. Those rimmed with diamonds will fetch $1,040. Another approachable line is New York-based Erica Weiner Jewelry, whose vintage-inspired creations conjure up whimsy and nostalgia with prices averaging under $300. At the company’s store in New York City, manager Emily Ruane steers clients away from solitaire diamonds unless the present is supposed to be the real deal — a proposal or anniversary gift. “It’s just not appropriate to give big diamonds unless you’re engaged or married,” Ruane said. Instead, for the holidays, she suggested the double letterpress necklace, which actually incorporates old moveable type as the pendants and is personalized with initials, or the Civil War-era tintype necklaces, which feature photographs printed on iron sheets hanging from brass chains. Men may appreciate the penknife necklace on a brass chain or a cast fossil nautilus necklace, items that aren’t highly embellished or too overwrought. Los Angeles-based Lord Griffon, known for its chunky oxidized silver jewelry and a fan base that includes Randy Jackson from “American Idol,” has also noticed a shift in male tastes to less inyour-face skull ware. What’s more in demand these days are sleeker looks, such as ID bracelets and fleur-de-lis necklaces, said Suzie Lederer, founder and creative director of Lord Griffon. “More than something really hard-edged, they want something they can wear not when they’re just going to the club or riding motorcycles on weekends,” Lederer said.
C.C. Skye also projects a heavy metal holiday of sorts, glittering with multiple diamonds, such as the Wish List Necklace, comprising of heavy bronze chains woven with white stones. Her retailers are also beginning to stock the pav punk princess bracelet in gun metal for the holidays. Skye said it caters to that “luxe, funk princess” trend. “It’s got an edge with elegance,” she said. “There’s irony and balance. Women of all ages are wearing pav, not just younger girls.” Fine jewelry is also in demand for those aspirational buyers, according to Janet Goldman, founder and chief executive officer of Fragments showroom in New York, which represents about 35 fashion and fine jewelry collections. Her suggestions for holiday gifts include layered looks, such as necklaces that are “feminine, soft and drapey,” and bracelets that combine textures such as wooden beads paired with a diamond bangle. Long, dramatic earrings are in for those seeking gifts infused with glam and sparkle. The Miguel Ases line features dangling earrings studded with tiny beads that are easy to wear with tank tops or little black dresses and fit the under-$500 budget. Customers who want to splurge may opt for the designs by Phillips Frankel, including the round pendants covered in pav diamonds at $1,500 or Moritz Glik’s oxidized silver and white gold chains with little box pendants enclosed with rubies, diamonds and sapphires priced around $10,000. “[Jewelry] purchases over $5,000 are what’s trending,” Goldman said. “It’s about finding something that will make us buy, something that ’I can’t live without.’”

ombies and mad men and superheroes, oh my. No, it’s not the nightmare before Christmas. The characters and creatures that star in the year’s most popular TV shows and movies have inspired T-shirts, toys and all sorts of gifts sure to delight the pop culture aficionado. There are great presents out there for everyone influenced by either the small screen or the silver screen.
MAD ABOUT ’MAD MEN’ The award-winning series about the lives of Don Draper and company, set in the New York advertising world in the 1960s, has managed to generate a cult following in a few seasons. Give the Maddict in your life any of the first three seasons of the hit series ($39.99 DVD/49.99 Blur-ray). Collectors will be charmed with season one packaged in a case in the shape of a classic Zippo lighter ($59.98, DVD).
For the adman, or adwoman, in your life, “Sterling’s Gold: Wit and Wisdom of an Ad Man” (Grove Press 2010), is filled with witty one-liners from Roger Sterling, the pithy founding partner of the fictional agency. A sample: “Being with a client is like being in a marriage. Sometimes you get into it for the wrong reasons and eventually they hit you in the face.”
RED FOR THE HOLIDAYS The undead just won’t die. In fact, their grip on fans may be getting stronger. In its fourth season, “True Blood,” the TV drama about humans and vampires in the heart of Louisiana, is still going strong. Catch up on the latest action and romance with “True Blood: The Complete Third Season” ($59.99 DVD/$79.99 Blu ray).
FOR THE KIDS Superhero blockbuster movies “Captain America” and “Thor” both bowed at No. 1 at the box office this past summer, with “Tranformers: Dark of the Moon” also at the top of the pack with a worldwide gross of over $1 billion. Whether kids want to embrace their inner first avenger (Captain America) or their inner mighty avenger (Thor), they’ll have their weapon of choice to battle the bad guys: Captain America’s Disc Launching Shield (ages 5 and up, $19.99) and Thor’s Lightning Hammer (ages 5 and up, $19.99). Transformers are evil-fighting robots disguised as everyday machines, like trucks and cars. Their transformations look complicated on-screen but the Transformers Rescue Bots from Playskool (ages 3 and up, $11.99) help little kids make the magic in one big, easy step.
TIDINGS OF COMFORT, AND GLEE In “Glee,” the Fox TV hit, a group of high school misfits find common ground (and their voices) by joining the McKinley High School glee club. The show that’s punctuated with spontaneous musical performances has gained a loyal fan following. Share Christmas classics as sung by the Glee cast with “Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album” CD from Columbia Records ($10.98). Hardcore Gleeks who know practically every song sung on the show will love strutting their stuff with “Karaoke Revolution Glee: Volume 2” from Koname ($39.99 for Wii). The Glee-tastic Microphone ($17.99) is the perfect toy for younger fans who enjoy singing their hearts out. The board game contingent can get in on the act with Cranium: Glee Edition ($34) and Yahtzee: Glee Collector’s Edition ($19.95), both from USAopoly. The Scene It? Glee! DVD game from Screenlife ($29.99) brings the McKinley High high jinks live to a living room near you. 1235 N Cleveland Ave Loveland www.rituals-salon.com

omewhere on the spectrum between techno-dazzle (iPad apps for toddlers, anyone?) and fuzzy-wuzzy bears, there’s a sweet spot: toys that inspire kids to have fun, stretch their creativity and learn while they play. With a little effort — and some guidance from savvy toy shop owners — any attentive shopper can hit the mark. Toys that encourage the most beneficial play may not be the biggest spotlight-grabbers. Their attractions are often more subtle and require a shopper to search past the dancing dolls massed out in aisle one. “Toys today, especially toys in the mass market, you push a button and it does something — it lights up or it sings or it turns around and does all kinds of things. But they’re not toys that allow a child to be imaginative and creative, said Jennic Law, owner of KangarooBoo toy store, West Des Moines,

Iowa. “The child is playing and having a good time, but the toy is doing most of the actions or thinking for him or her.” Law said classic problem-solving toys like puzzles and blocks are much better for children. She likes boldly colored Green Toys Blocks ($25, 6 months and up), which are made from recycled plastic milk containers and come in many shapes. Wendy Lippman, owner of Tlaquepaque Toy Town in Sedona, Ariz., seeks out toys that spur open-ended play. “I like toys where kids are encouraged to use their imagination,” she said. Lippman recommends toys that can serve as the focus for role-playing, where kids can act as cashiers or shoppers with a toy cash register, for example. Such toys also set up scenarios to educate children, she said. Science-related toys are no longer aimed at little Leonardos and can be packed with fun, said Jim Davis, owner of Kid’s Center toy store in Tucson, Ariz. Toys with magnets easily combine science learning with fun. The popular Discovery Set of magnetic blocks from Tegu ($70, age 3 and up) snap together and hang in balance, a perfect gift to spark the imagination of young children. Science kits from Thames & Kosmos are perennial award-winners. The Remote-Control Machines set ($70, age 8 and up) lets kids build 10 different motorized vehicles (including bulldozer, crane, Formula One racer, three-blade dozer, robotic arm) and then guide them with a remote control unit. their own. Try re-imagining books as toys. “There’s a jillion different topics for books,” Davis said. “You just need to know a little bit about the child and then pick out the appropriate story book.” “Press Here” is the title and also the instruction for the new book by Herv Tullet that launches young readers on a charming adventure. Watch them blow, tilt, shake, rub and tap colorful dots printed on the page to make them multiply, grow and rearrange themselves (Chronicle, $15, ages 4-8). KangarooBoo’s Law advises avoiding electronic educational and leisure toys for age 5 and under. “If [children] are able to sit down and solve a problem or a puzzle or build something, it makes the foundation for them as a person,” she said. She also said toys that involve physical play help children develop fine motor skills, gross motor skills, patience and other
mental capacities. Fastrack, a new board game by Blue Orange, pits opponents who twang elastic cords to send wooden disks shooting across the board and through a narrow slot. The first to get all 10 to the other side wins ($20, age 5 and up). To get kids up off the couch and develop their physical well-being, Davis suggested new classic toys for outdoors, such as jump ropes and sports balls, and new throw toys, including Rhino Toys’ SkyO, a flexible flying ring that’s easy to catch and throw ($8, age 3 and up). The Z-Curve Bow from Zing Toys launches foam arrows a satisfyingly long way ($20, age 8 and up). Whatever route you take to finding the best toy for a special boy or girl, Davis said, stop, think and proceed with inspiration. “You really need to know the child and try to engage the child in the purchase you make.”
Top Picks of Toy Store Gurus Spot It by Blue Orange ($11, ages 6 and up) Kids can spot matching images on the play cards with up to 7 others or have fun on their own. “There are five different ways to play the game, so it has great value.” — Jim Davis, Kid’s Center

From my oven with love The age-old tradition of gifting sweets EMMA CASTLEBERRY SPECIAL SECTIONS REPORTER-HERALD
F
or me, the approach of the holidays is defined by the fragrant aroma of vanilla and the gluttonous joy of licking the mixing spoon clean. I have early memories of the clamor of pots and pans banging together as my mother did her version of Christmas shopping. The holidays are a time for people to treat themselves. People eat more sweets, whether in celebration of the approaching new year, the presence of family and friends,
the vacation time or simply because it’s chilly outside. For me and my mother, it has always seemed like a win-win to give a baked gift. Not only are these gifts always received with eagerness, but you can often do the baking with someone you love. The pound cake recipe contributed by Marian Martin, my grandmother, is my ideal baked gift. It’s large enough for a family but keeps well, so it can be given to an individual. The moist, velvety texture is comforting and has always been a reminder of the holidays for me. The cake can be topped with chocolate ganache or icing for an extra flair, and it is sure to be a hit with anyone... who’s not on a diet.

Two-Ingredient Pumpkin Muffins From sweet-verbena.blogspot.com Prep time: 10 minutes Bake time: 25 minutes
Truffles Contributed by Robin Autorino Prep time: 30 minutes Ingredients: 7 ounces heavy whipping cream 8 ounces dark chocolate 3 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 ounces extract or liqueur to flavor nuts (optional)
Directions: Robin said the key to a good truffle is equal parts liquid and chocolate. This means that you will need to adjust the amount of heavy cream according to how much flavoring you use in your truffle. When I visited Robin Chocolate’s new location at 600 South Airport Road, we made our truffles with amaretto liqueur and used high quality chocolate, which definitely made a difference. Using high quality ingredients will improve the quality of your finished product. Melt the chocolate in a microwave or double boiler. Bring the cream to a simmer. When the chocolate is fully melted, stir the cream into the chocolate in parts and add the liqueur or extract of your choice. Put the truffle mixture in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or until it has a doughy consistency. Take out small, bite-size scoops and form into balls. Roll in cocoa powder or nuts.
Pound Cake Contributed by Marian Martin Prep time: 30 minutes Ingredients: Bake time: 1 hour, 30 minutes 3 sticks unsalted butter 1 8-ounce package of cream cheese 3 cups sugar 6 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
Directions: All ingredients need to be at room temperature. Beat butter and cream cheese until fluffy. Beat in sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla. Beat in flour until combined. Don’t over beat. Pour into a greased and floured bundt pan. Place a Pyrex measuring cup filled with two cups of water in the oven with the cake to ensure moistness. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Cool in pan for 30 minutes.
Ingredients: 15-ounce can of pumpkin 1 box vanilla cake mix
Directions: Blend pumpkin and vanilla cake mix. Fill muffin cups and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. They are ready to eat, but taste better with the following cream cheese icing on top.
Honey Roasted Peanut Butter Bars with Chocolate Ganache From Better Homes and Gardens website Prep time: 40 minutes Bake time: 12 minutes (1 hour to chill) Crust ingredients: 1 package devil’s food cake mix (2-layer size) 1 /3 cup butter, melted 1 egg
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 15-by-10-by-1-inch baking pan with foil, extending foil over the pan edges. Lightly grease foil. Set aside. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, 1/3 cup melted butter, and egg. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 1 to 2 minutes or until mixture is combined. Press mixture onto bottom of the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes. Cool in pan on a wire rack.
Ms. Humble's Whipped Cream Cheese Frosting From notsohumblepie.blogspot.com Prep time: 15 minutes Ingredients: 16 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 11/2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup heavy cream, cold
Directions: Beat the cheese, sugar and vanilla until smooth. In a separate bowl, beat the cream to nearly stiff peaks, then add the whipped cream into the cheese mixture and quickly and briefly beat to combine. Do not over beat. To add a little fall flair to your cupcakes, top them with these simple, edible acorns. You will need Hershey’s kisses, butterscotch chips, mini vanilla wafers and icing. Attach bottom of kiss to vanilla wafer with a small amount of icing. Attach butterscotch chip to other side of wafer. Press into iced cupcake.
Peanut Butter Filling ingredients: 3 /4 cup butter, softened 3 /4 cup honey-roasted peanut butter 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons whipping cream or milk 3 /4 cup honey-roasted peanuts, chopped
Directions: In a large bowl, combine 3/4 cup softened butter, peanut butter, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add powdered sugar and beat until combined, scraping bowl occasionally. Beat in the 2 tablespoons whipping cream. Stir in the chopped peanuts. Spread mixture evenly over the cooled crust. Place bars in the refrigerator while preparing the ganache. Ganache Topping ingredients: 1 /2 cup whipping cream 1 11.5-ounce package milk chocolate pieces
Directions: In a small saucepan, bring /2 cup whipping cream just to boiling over medium-high heat. Remove from heat. Add chocolate pieces. Do not stir. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir until smooth. Cool 15 minutes. Very gently pour ganache over bars, lightly spreading it to the edges of the bars with a spatula. Cover and chill for 1 to 2 hours or until set. Using the edges of the foil, lift the uncut bars out of the pan. Cut into bars.

verybody knows at least one — a pretentious foodie who insists on froo-froo ingredients, laborious techniques and over-the-top dishes. Well, this year they’re out of luck. Because 2011 was a year when cookbooks — even those by high-end and celebrity chefs — went all homey and nostalgic. There were meatball books, tomes of rustic dishes and reminiscences on cooking your way back to childhood. The result? There are plenty of choices for those of us who must blend the joy of cooking with the sometimes crushing need to feed. And that will make gift shopping for the food lovers in your life much easier. Here are our suggestions:
FOR THE HURRIED AND HARRIED For the busy cook who hates the post-dinner cleanup, “EatingWell One-Pot Meals” (Countryman Press, 2011) offers more than 100 recipes for healthy, comforting food done in a single vessel. From classics such as skilletroasted chicken and gravy to inventive dishes like fennel-spiked barley risotto from the slow cooker and sweet-and-spicy pork in the wok, the book helps families spend more time at the table than at the sink.

Glitz and glamour come home this year as celebrity chefs take to nesting. In his remarkably easy-to-follow “Cooking in Everyday English” (Oxmoor House, 2011), Todd English serves up red snapper and melon ceviche, wild mushroom couscous, tequilabraised short ribs, and, yes, chili. An entire chapter on family cooking offers kidpleasers, such as butternut mac-and-cheese and classic pizza.
FOR WEEKEND WARRIORS It’s cold. It’s damp. Maybe it’s even snowing. “Sunday Roasts: A Year’s Worth of Mouthwatering Roasts” (Chronicle Books, 2011) conjures images of the perfect winter Sunday, with dishes like orange-scented pork roast with fennel and potatoes, and lamb shanks with dates and olives. A standing rib roast with porcini mushroom sauce might even impress the in-laws.
FOR THE KIDS “OMG Pancakes!” (Avery, 2011) pretty much says it all. Little mouths will gobble up green alligators, bees in their hive, puppy dog faces and unicorns, all captured in pancakes and brought to life by the magic of natural food coloring and squeeze bottles. Perfect for snow days and sleepovers.

E-Readers Made Easy N LINDSEY ROMAIN CTW FEATURES
Become familiar with the features of today’s most popular e-readers
othing soothes quite like curling up with a good book. But with the booming e-reader market, the avid readers on your gift list might soon be curling up with thousands at once. As the popularity of e-readers continues to soar — reports show that 12 percent of adults in the United States own one, up 6 percent from last fall — they're sure to be a hit this holiday season. And with plenty of models on the market, choosing the best can be a challenge. Knowing the features and fine-tuning them to what fits their potential owner is the best way to choose. Here are some of the most popular devices on the market and the features that make them stand out.
KINDLE FIRE & KINDLE TOUCH The Amazon Kindle is like the iPod of the e-reader category — there are a lot, none are the same, and there always is something new. The latest model, the Kindle Fire ($199) is the first color Kindle, with a 7-inch multitouch display, and it's a lot more than an e-reader. The Wi-Fi device treads into tablet territory with apps, games, music and the new cloud-accelerated Amazon Silk browser. Its 8GB of memory is enough for 80 apps plus either 10 movies or 800 songs or 6,000 books, and Amazon Cloud storage is free for all Amazon content. The Kindle Touch (Wi-Fi, $99) and Kindle Touch 3G ($149) debuted alongside the Fire, offering the same 6-inch display as classic Kindles while eschewing the keyboard for a multitouch interface.

he Vita, PlayStation’s next-generation portable gaming device, took the top Hardware honors from the gaming press at E3 2011, but unfortunately, it won’t be available in North America until 2012. However, on-the-go gamers need fear not. There’s the Nintendo 3DS ($249.99), the world’s first portable 3D gaming system. The 3DS packs two screens — a 3.5-inch, 800-by-240pixel upper LCD screen that delivers 3D picture without the need for glasses, and 3-inch, 320-by-240-pixel lower LCD touch screen that can be used to control gameplay, in addition to the D-pad and an analog “slide pad that allows 360-degree motion. A 3D Depth Slider adjusts just how three-dimensional objects appear and can even be completely turned off (boring) if need be. Like it’s older brother, the Wii, the 3DS has Netflix-streaming capabilities too, via a downloadable app from the Nintendo eShop.
Give the gift of new nostalgia Twenty years ago, my brothers and I received the best Christmas present ever — the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Twenty years later, I still have it, and I’ve even purchased new S-video cables to help it behave in the best way possible with my HDTV. Now, while I still possess all my favorite old games, there remain a few SNES titles — specifically, the SNES classics “Final Fantasy III and “Chrono Trigger — that I never played in my youth and, as I’ve grown older, I really wish I could play. The problem is the aftermarket (read: eBay) cost on some of these much-sought-after titles is, roughly, $100 or so each. The good news? Both were released on Nintendo’s Virtual Console in 2011, meaning I can download them straight to my Wii and play them with classic SNES controls via the Wii Classic Controller or new Classic Controller Plus ($19.99). So, what’s on my Christmas list? Some Nintendo Points gift cards ($10 to $30). With a few clicks of a Wiimote, I’ll be enjoying some I Love the ’90s gaming — all without having to outbid anyone. — Timothy R. Schulte

here’s an old saying among photographers that the best camera is the one you have with you. For many of us, that’s increasingly a smartphone. But if someone on your list relies only on a mobile phone for photography, they’re missing out. From blazing-fast shooting speeds to exquisite detail and creative options, nothing can top an interchangeable-lens camera. Thankfully, camera makers have trimmed their cost while adding features to make them approachable for first-time users. So, tell them to pocket that phone and put one of these bad boys around their neck.
NIKON D3100 This is a perfect stepping stone into the world of advanced photography for someone who’d prefer a sturdy, full-sized d-SLR model. The camera’s “Guide Mode” gives a user on-screen tutorials, suggesting camera settings to help achieve the desired results. If they want to simply “set and forget” the camera, they can choose the Scene Auto Selector mode and the Nikon D3100 ($699) will automatically pick a scene mode optimized for the shooting environment. They’ll be able to frame shots through the viewfinder or 3-inch LCD screen. It’s possible to capture high definition (1920-by-1080) video on the D3100 with full-time autofocus available while you shoot (many d-SLRs disengage autofocus during movie filming, which often results in a blurred mess). The D3100 includes an 18-55mm lens with Nikon’s Vibration Reduction technology to reduce image blur. The D3100 offers a 14-megapixel sensor and a burst mode of up to 3 frames per second to capture fastmoving action.
CANON EOS T3I For those with a little more to spend, Canon’s EOS T3i ($899) packs an 18-megapixel CMOS image sensor and can fire off a burst of 3.7fps for up to 34 photos. It also can record high-definition movies. Its high-resolution 3-inch LCD flips out from the camera’s body so photogs can frame hard-to-reach shots. The T3i has most of the manual controls you’d expect in a digital SLR (shutter, aperture, white balance, etc.) with a “Scene Intelligent Auto” mode that analyzes the scene in front of you and selects the optimal settings — just point and shoot. The T3i camera kit includes an 18-55mm image stabilized lens and the camera is compatible with Canon’s full line of EF and EF-S lenses.

OLYMPUS PEN MINI E-PM1
SONY NEX-3 Sony’s NEX-3 offers a similar design to the Pen — a slim body that’s still capable of swapping lenses. The NEX-3 delivers slightly lower resolution HD video recording (720p) but packs a few features not found on the Pen, such as a Sweep Panorama mode for easily creating panoramic images. The NEX-3 also delivers a speedier burst mode of up to 7fps and a higher-resolution, 14-megapixel image sensor. If they’re just learning the ropes of advanced photography, an on-screen guide delivers shooting tips to the camera’s large, 3-inch display. The display itself can tilt up to 45 degrees down and up to 80-degrees northward, providing flexibility to shoot from different angles.

The Olympus Pen series of cameras offer the interchangeable lenses of a digital SLR camera in a body that’s closer in size to a point-and-shoot. The Pen Mini E-PM1 ($499) features a 12-megapixel image sensor and 1080p HD video recording with stereo microphone for high-quality audio capture. They’ll frame shots through a bright, 3-inch display and can apply one of six art filters to give images some creative pop. On-board Shadow Adjustment technology helps compensate for high-contrast environments where light and shadow collide. The PM1 is among the first high-end digital cameras to include a 3D mode for shooting stills with greater depth. Available in purple, pink, brown, white, silver or black, the Pen Mini is just 1.3 inches thick and includes a 14-42mm lens (3x magnification) and works with a growing family of ZUIKO Digital/Micro 4/3 lenses from Olympus and Panasonic, among others.

Before the iPad debuted in early 2010, no one really knew they needed a tablet. But, gosh, how did we ever live without them? Lighter than a laptop with more real estate than a smartphone, tablets have quickly become the go-to device for browsing the web, playing games or simply reading a book — whether on the couch or in a cab. Just like the flurry of smartphones that followed the iPhone, there now is a bevy of tablets from which consumers can choose. They browse, download and multitask at blazingfast speeds. They snap photos and videos, and they allow users to video chat with anyone, anywhere. And for the ultimate use on the couch, they can even function as a remote control.

BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK
SONY TABLET S
Sony Tablet S Screen Size: 9.4 inches Resolution: 1280 x 800 Weight: 1 pound 5 ounces
So, there’s no Sony PlayStation 4 this year, but there is the Sony Tablet S — the first PlayStation Certified tablet. The Tablet S comes preloaded with PS favorites “Crash Bandicoot” and “Pinball Heroes,” with other classic PlayStation titles available for download. The Tablet S, one of the newest devices on the scene, also has the most unique form factor — a folded-magazine design the manufacturer says fits more comfortably in your hands. The tab, available in 16 GB ($499) and 32 GB ($599) models, runs the latest-greatest Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, powered by a dual-core 1 GHz processor, and features a 5-MP rear camera and a front-facing web cam. As an e-reader, the Tablet S offers access to more than 2 million titles in the Sony Reader Store. Already got too many devices sitting on the coffee table? A built-in universal remote lets the Tablet S control the TV, Blu-ray player, stereo or cable box — whether it’s a Sony product or not.
SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB If you’re looking for options, look on further than the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This Android tablet comes in three sizes — 10.1 inches, 8.9 and 7 — and is the only tab to be available on all major wireless networks, if they’re in need of a constant Internet connection. Here’s a look at the Galaxy 10.1.
Galaxy Tab 10.1 Screen Size: 10.1 inches Resolution: 1280 x 800 Weight: 1 pound 4 ounces
GALAXY TAB 10.1 The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is slightly taller and narrower than the iPad 2 but is equally thin (or thick, depending on how you look at it). Available in two sizes, 16GB and 32 GB, and two colors, gray and white, the Tab 10.1 is offered as either a Wi-Fi Only model (16GB — $499, 32GB — $599) or a 4G LTE model for Verizon’s network (16GB — $529, 32GB — $629). The Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs Android 3.1 Honeycomb and features a 1 GHz dual-core processor for blazing-fast browsing, gaming and on-the-go multitasking. A high-def display delivers crystal-clear picture, whether they’re streaming YouTube videos or slingshotting birds at pigs. A 3-MP rear-facing camera snaps photos, and a 2-MP front-facing camera can be used for video conferencing. As for entertainment, the Galaxy 10.1 is a beast. The Samsung Media Hub provides access to more than 5,000 movies and TV shows, which can be viewed on an HDTV via an HDMI dongle. Amazon’s Music Cloud Player and Kindle apps come preloaded, as does the popular social game Words With Friends, ensuring Tab users never need utter, “I have nothing to do.”
Everyone knows a Blackberry addict; this is the tablet for them. The Playbook — available in 16 GB ($499), 32 GB ($599) and 64 GB ($699) models — syncs real-time with BlackBerry smartphones, so their email, calendar, address book, tasks and documents always are upto-the-minute. The best-in-class 3-MP front-facing camera offers solid video-conferencing quality, and the 5-MP rear camera snaps 1080p high-def video. The ultraportable tab, which can run on Sprint’s network, sizes in at just 5.1-by-7.6 inches on the outside but packs major guts on the inside: a dual-core 1 GHz processor plus 1 GB of RAM.

Motorola Xoom Screen Size: 10.1 inches Resolution: 1280 x 800 Weight: 24.9 ounces (Wi-Fi), 25.75 (3G)
MOTOROLA XOOM The Motorola Xoom ($499) is a mobile monster. The tablet, which features a 10.1-inch, high-def widescreen display, features a 1 GHz dual-core processor and runs the Android 3.1 operating system (designed specifically for tablets, by the way), making a breeze of browsing, gaming, streaming or video editing. The 5-MP rear-facing camera captures solid stills and records 720p high-def video. It’s ready to run on Verizon’s 3G or super-speedy 4G LTE network, and a Wi-Fi version can be tethered to U.S. Cellular smartphones.
DELL STREAK 7 T-Mobile’s first 4G tablet, the Dell Streak 7 ($299), like the Galaxy Tab 7, offers just the right stuff for being an ultra-productive, ultra-pocketable on-thego tab: a 1.3-MP front-facing camera for video chat, 5-MP rear-facing camera for snapping photos and recording high-def video, 16 gigs of built-in memory, a 1 GHz processor and Android 2.2, all on a 7-inch display.
T-MOBILE G-SLATE The G-Slate ($699) is T-Mobile’s latest 4G tablet, running Android 3.0. The 5-MP rear-facing camera is right on par with many smartphone cameras and can record 1080p high-def video and 3D clips, which can be stored on the device’s 32GB of memory and played back on the 8.9-inch high-res display. There’s a 2-MP front-facing camera for video chat, and the 1 GHz dual-core processor multitasks games and apps with ease.

Beyond Smar t Enough with brains. It's time for a phone with brawn. Here's your guide to the best smartphones that pack ultra-quick processors, responsive memory and amazingly strong battery lives
I
t used to be that a smartphone was just that — smart. When we weren’t making or taking calls, we could check the score on a web browser or fire off a couple quick emails, maybe look up directions on a map. Then came apps. And games. And multitasking. And soon we were asking our phones to do a lot more for us than they were really equipped to do. Now that’s all changed. As high-speed 4G data networks have taken to the air, they’ve ushered in a new era of beefed-up, super-fast smartphones that are loaded with enough power and features to make the era of lamenting our phones a ghost of Christmas past. If someone on your list is in dire need a phone upgrade, you might want to check out one of these mobile monsters, which are fast, responsive, long-lasting and just plain fun.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S II EPIC 4G TOUCH A dual-core 1 GHz processor is what you’ll find in most front-ofpack smartphones — tablets, too. But Samsung’s new Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch ($199) is packing a 1.2 GHz dual-core, and with a full gig of RAM and an enormous 4.52-inch Super AMOLED display, there’s both plenty of power and real estate to browse, game, video chat or stream movies on Sprint’s 4G network. The Galaxy S Epic II runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread for access to all their favorite Google apps, and entertainment options abound with access to the Samsung Media Hub. The battery packs a talk time of more than 8 hours. $199 with two-year contract, Sprint
MOTOROLA ATRIX The Atrix ($99) packs a Firefox browser with Adobe Flash support for a desktop-worthy browsing experience in a smartphone. It comes equipped with a dual-core 1 GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. Plug the Atrix into the Motorola LapDock ($299, sold separately) to tap into a full Firefox 4.0 browser, keyboard and trackpad on an 11.6-inch screen, for true mobile multitasking. It can snap 5-MP stills and record 720p high-def video, and with AT&T’s U-Verse, the Atrix can download live and ondemand TV over AT&T’s 4G network right to its 4-inch, 540-by-960 qHD display. Running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, the Atrix is uber-customizable; home-screen widgets can be moved and resized to personalize the panels. The battery offers up to 540 minutes of talk time and can last on standby for up to 350 hours — not that they’d ever let it just sit there. $99 with two-year contract, AT&T
MOTOROLA DROID BIONIC What’s the point of recording highdef video if you’re not going to watch it on an HDTV? That’s something the Droid Bionic ($299) doesn’t need to worry about. It captures full 1080p HD video and displays it on an HDTV via HDMI Mirror mode. The Bionic packs a 1 GHz dual-core processor and a full 1GB of RAM, so apps launch quickly and multitask even quicker. With Verizon’s 4G LTE, browsing and emailing are up to 10 times faster than 3G networks. The Bionic, which runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, features a 540-by-960 qHD picture on its mammoth 4.3-inch display and has 16GB of built-in memory. Like the Atrix, the Droid Bionic is compatible with Motorola’s LapDock ($299) for 4G power in laptop form. Its bionic battery provides up to 650 minutes of talk time and can sit on standby for up to 200 hours. $299 with two-year contract, Verizon Wireless

HTC SENSATION 4G
Loveland Reporter-Herald Publication

NEXUS S 4G FROM GOOGLE
Big, bold, fast — that’s the HTC Sensation 4G ($199). It has a 4.3-inch, 540-by-960 qHD display, records 1080p high-def video and blazes across T-Mobile’s 4G network with a lightning-quick 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. It features 768MB of RAM and has an 8MB memory card included for storing HD videos or photos shot with the 8-MP camera. The phone runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features the new HTC Sense 3.0 experience, which offers new features and enhancements, including a customizable lock screen. The Sensation 4G has up to 8 hours of talk time and can sit on standby for up to three weeks. $199 with two-year contract, T-Mobile
Sure, Android phones abound these days, but the Nexus S 4G ($99), Google’s latest flagship phone, is the first to feature Google Wallet. As the name implies, it turns your phone into a virtual wallet: After a credit card is synced up to the phone, all shoppers need to do is launch the app, tap the near-field communications sensor (such as PayPass), the money is sent — no swiping, no cash. But the Nexus S does more than just aim to make wallets obsolete. It features a 4-inch, 480 x 800 Super AMOLED display at 226ppi for ultra-crisp images up to 1.5 times higher than traditional LCD screens, and it snaps 5-MP photos. Inside, it has a 1 GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has up to 6 hours of talk time. $99 with two-year contract, Sprint

Apple aficionados always are hungry for an upgrade. Here's a rundown on all the latest 'Pads, 'Pods and 'Phones they're craving this season
Y
ou might be a PC, but there’s no doubt that they’re a Mac — and nothing else with suffice. If you need the perfect — and newest — peripheral to plug into their fruitful life, look no further. Here are the latest Apple gadgets they’re pining for.
IPHONE 4S The new iPhone 4S takes everything to the next level. A 1 GHz dual-core processor delivers speedier browsing and gaming, and the upgraded camera captures 8-MP stills and full 1080p high-def video. But the coolest feature is the introduction of Siri, the intelligent assistant that will set reminders, check the weather and proffer dining suggestions, all via voice commands. Of course, there is access to more than 425,000 apps in the App Store, right from the palm of their hand. Oh, don’t forget that the iPhone 4S can simply make calls, too. The iPhone 4S is available in black or white. 16GB: $199 32GB: $299 64GB: $399
IPAD 2 The second-generation iPad is everything great about the original — but even better. First, Apple says the 9.7-inch tablet is a 33 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the original iPad, but it still offers a super-long 10-hour battery life. An upgrade to a 1 GHz dual-core processor allows for faster browsing on the web and smoother multi-
tasking on apps. The biggest change, though, is the introduction of a front- and rearfacing cameras for Face Time chatting and capturing stills and high-def video. New Smart Covers magnetically clip to the edge to serve as a screen protector and angled-viewing stand. The iPad 2 is available in black or white. 16GB: $499 Wi-Fi, $629 3G 32GB: $599 Wi-Fi, $729 3G 64GB: $699 Wi-Fi, $829 3G
IPOD TOUCH The latest-gen iPod Touch brings along a Face Time camera for video chatting or capturing 720p high-def video and a high-res Retina Display touch screen — all at only 0.28 inches thick. With all that and apps, one could say the iPod Touch truly is an iPhone without the phone, but up to 40 hours of audio playback leave no doubts that this is one standout iPod. The iPod Touch is available in black or white. 8GB: $199 32GB: $299 64GB: $399
IPOD NANO The 0.74-ounce nano packs touch-screen controls and up to 24 hours of audio playback into its roughly 1.5-inch square design. In addition to their mp3 collection, users can tune into FM radio or track their daily steps on a pedometer. A clip makes it easy to take on-the-go for a commute or for a workout, as
it also syncs with the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit. The nano is available in seven colors. 8GB: $129 16GB: $149
music. Available in black or gray. 160GB: $249
IPOD SHUFFLE
If you know someone who’s cut their cable TV in the past year, an Apple TV might be the gift for them. This half-pound, 4-inch square device lets them stream movies and shows from iTunes on their home computer right to their HDTV. Netflix streaming, naturally, is built in, and the Apple TV also lets them rent movies directly from their TV. Sports fans with MLB.tv or NBA.com League Pass subscriptions also can stream games live on the device. And all can be controlled from iPad, iPod or iPhone via the Remote app. Apple TV: $99
One could almost call the iPod Shuffle a trial version. It offers plenty of space (2GB) and playback (15 hours) in a tiny package (1.24 inches wide, 0.44 ounces). Plus, it has clickable buttons, unlike previous Shuffles, and a clip for keeping it contained. Best of all, it’s dirt cheap ($49). 2GB: $49
IPOD CLASSIC There are no frills with the original iPod. Click wheel. A 2.5-inch LCD display. And more space than they have
