eep roots build strong business, and Bath Garden Center and Nursery of Fort Collins has serviced the Front Range area for over 45 years, providing the community with consistent high quality and customer inspiration. Owner Tom Bath started working with only a pickup truck and a handful of tools in 1965. Now the company sup-

ports residential and commercial landscaping, a full time retail nursery, a boutique garden center and power equipment services and sales. “We are not just a garden center on the corner,” said Bath Garden Center manager Mundy Miller. “We cover all landscape needs, both indoor and outdoor.” On the residential design side of the company, sales director Aaron Salzman offers a service that creates 3D images of potential landscape projects, all designed with the clients dreams in mind. “Before a shovel is in the ground, we do a 3D birds eye view and virtual tour of the landscape,” Salzman said. “It is a way to make sure there is no gray area between what they thought they were I See Bath/Page 2

going to get and what the finished product is.” This landscape design option can help clients in the building stage of their home coordinate colors and textures of the home with the yard spaces, even if the home is only a blue print or bare frame. “Customers are taken aback when we can envision a house from the blue print,” Salzman said. “Most of our competition strives to get as many projects done as possible each year. We focus on a smaller amount of refined jobs and get to know the client. What do they value in their lives, from time with family to entertaining? Do they like gardening or not? We take all of this into account when planning.” Both the commercial and residential side of Bath Garden Center and Nursery focus on making landscaping as sustainable as possible, from grouping shipments to reduce carbon foot prints to maximizing water use in sprinkler system design and recycling unused materials. On the power shop side of the business, manager Mike Stutz offers many green products such as Hustler brand electronic mowers with zero emission standards. “They are easy to use because you don’t have to have an engine,” Stutz said. The shop also provides landscaping equipment maintenance and part sales for those who want to fix their own equipment. The power shop will serve as a recycling and rebate center for the city of Fort Collins rebate program for trading in old equipment for more energy efficient and environmentally conscious products. The Bath Garden Center and Nursery store offers unique gardening materials

and a friendly knowledgeable staff who are passionate about gardening. The store is one of the largest suppliers for organic and natural gardening lifestyles. The store sets trends in Colorado plantscapes through alternative gardening practices such as pesticide free growing and indoor hydroponics. Sales associate Benjamin Bell spearheads the hydroponics department, a form of sustainable gardening for indoor plant enthusiasts. A drip system with a reservoir of nutrients at the base pumps nutrients into each individual plant and the plants grow in a soilless medium. “Because your plants are on a constant nutrient feed rather than being fertilized with synthetic fertilizers over time, they are in a very controlled environment, so you have increased yields,” Bell said. With hydroponics, growers are assured of what exactly is going into their food and the quality of the seed. This is a healthy nutritious option for the whole family without the possible food source concerns of genetically modified plants, pesticides and of some commercially grown produce. For all gardening and landscaping aspects of life, Bath Garden Center and Nursery works to keep customers informed and focused on healthy yard practices. “We strive to educate our customers about organic gardening and how to nourish the soil we tread heavily on,” Miller said. “Choosing organic products and soil amendments will make your yard and garden healthier for you, your family and future generations. We can all make a difference in this world. Why not start in the back yard?”

recourse state, then the lender would foreclose on the property and would not be entitled to go after other assets. Otherwise, the lender would have to file for a deficiency judgment. A deficiency judgment is given to a lender that is owed more than it gets through the sale of the home in foreclosure. In some states, lenders can go after other assets once the home is foreclosed on if it is still owed money. Your friend will need to hire an attorney to make sure that once the property is foreclosed upon, the bank will not have the right to go after him for any other money owed. Your friend might also want to talk to the divorce attorney who helped him out and get more information. The divorce decree might have provided that the spouse would be solely responsible for the debt on the home.

It might turn out that the divorce decree could shield him from any consequences from the foreclosure. But he should check that out with his attorney. I don’t refer readers to particular attorneys. However, do recommend that your friend contact the local bar association and ask to speak to the head of the real estate committee. That person should be well versed in real estate matters and able recommend a trusted real estate attorney who can assist with this problem. Question: Both of my parents are in their early 80s. Is there any advantage to having the majority of their assets, including the house, transferred to my name? I would only do this with their approval and the understanding that they have access to any funds through me. Answer: I’m sure that you and your parents have a great relationship, and I’m sure they could come to you if they were in financial trouble. But parents don’t like having to rely on their kids for financial support.

And often nothing but trouble is created when a parent transfers their assets to their kids’ names. The good news is that there is no real tax advantage to doing this, and it might even get you into trouble later on. While the estate tax is still in limbo, there is still no advantage to having your parents gift you their assets now. First, they might need them. Second, you’re better off inheriting these items than receiving them as a gift. Prior to this year, if you inherited a home from your parents, you would have inherited the home at its value at the time of their death. That is, if you sold the home the day after you inherited it, you would have paid no tax on the sale of the home. The cost of the home to you would have been its value at the time of their death and the sales price of the home would have established its value; therefore, you would not have made a profit. However, starting this year, when you inherit a home, its value is determined by what your parents paid for

the home and put into the home. So if your parents purchased the home for $50,000 many years ago and put in improvements of $50,000 into the home, the cost basis of the home would be about $100,000. If you then sold the home for $200,000, you would have to pay taxes on the profit between the $100,000 cost basis and the sales price of $200,000. It’s a tall order for an heir to track down the costs of an asset like a home that was owned by parents who are no longer living. You would be wise to sit down with your parents and go over their finances and determine the cost basis for their home, as well as for any other asset that has appreciated over time. Here’s another suggestion: Spend some time with an estate attorney, who can lay out the options for various types of trusts, and make sure your parents’ wills and powers of attorney for health care and financial matters are in order. Knowing that the estate is in order will help them, and you.

germinated. Grass seed is a slow germinator, so be prepared to wait 14-20 days for it to sprout. The most common mistake in over-seeding is from impatience with the germination time — many gardeners give up too soon and cut off the water just when the young sprouts first emerge. If you have already applied pre-emergent, wait two-to-four months before trying to over-seed. The pre-emergent will breakdown in the sunlight during the summer months and allow for germination of new seed. have to mow much more often. The best defense against weeds is to grow a healthy, dense lawn that will out-compete weeds trying to muscle in on your turf. If you have a thin lawn and want to over-seed it with grass this season, do not apply preemergent. Spring is a good time to over-seed cool season grasses into areas that are threadbare. For best results, core-aerate the lawn before you spread seed. The seed will fall into the holes made by the aerator, which act as ideal germination chambers for grass seed. As the seedling sprouts and germinates, its roots dig deeper into soil that has been aerated. When core-aerating, pass the machine over the area several times in differing directions, making hundreds of holes in the ground. Water the lawn lightly every day until the seed has

H&RG Rhema Stew

Serious mac attack RHEMA MUNCY SPECIAL SECTIONS REPORTER

T

he best method of cooking involves throwing open the fridge door and quickly picking out items from each shelf to make a delicious meal. The other best method of cooking is macaroni and cheese. Period. The only problem for my cooking of this American delicacy is that my fiance can’t eat cheese. Sometimes I make the dish anyway and sit on the couch and tell him how awful it tastes while inwardly I am enjoying a little piece of heaven. I am sure he knows I am telling a little white lie about the tastiness of this comfort food, so I decided to come clean and make a version that he can also happily swallow. Enter the dairy free but still pretty cheesy Italian casserole. For this dish, I experimented with what was in the fridge. I pulled out ground turkey, Kalamata olives, pepperoni and noodles. Then I grabbed almond cheese, soy cheese, Tofutti sour cream (a soy alternative to the real sour cream), almond milk and coconut milk. The trick when using these cheese alternatives is to leave plenty of time for melting. After adding hearty whole wheat noodles, this casserole was a filling feast with a creamy tasting sauce to boot. I entered the recipe into the recipe analyzer at www.caloriecount.about.com to see the nutrition results. This version of Italian casserole is high in fat, but it also packs a mean serving of protein (about 10 grams a serving) and nearly 15 grams of fiber. From now on I will try my hardest to be good and not eat dairy. At the very least I will make this version for Matthew while I sneak in some good quality time with my favorite bowl of mac. But this recipe was so good, it might reform my cheesy ways.

Rhema Stew

RH photo/Rhema Muncy

Creamy Italian Casserole Modified from a low-fat macaroni and cheese recipe at www.WebMd.com. Serves 6 Ingredients: 3 cups whole wheat macaroni 1 tablespoon margarine 4 tablespoons Tofutti Sour Cream 5 tablespoons white flour 1 1/2 cups coconut milk 1 1/2 cups almond milk Salt and pepper 1 teaspoon Cayenne pepper 3 ounces cheddar soy cheese 3 ounces pepper jack almond cheese 2/3 cups bread crumbs 1 pound ground turkey 20 chopped Kalamata olives 1 /2 bag of lean turkey pepperoni

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a glass 9-by-9 inch pan with cooking spray. Bring a large saucepan of lightly salted water to a boil and boil the noodles until they are soft and then drain. Meanwhile, in a medium-sized saucepan, melt the margarine. Remove it from heat and blend in the Tofutti sour cream and flour to make a paste. Whisk in the coconut milk and almond milk and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Reduce the heat to simmer, stir in the salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, and stir frequently until the sauce thickens (about 5 minutes). Whisk in an additional tablespoon of flour if needed for desired thickness. Then add in the cheese and stir well until it partially melts. Pour the cheese sauce into a large saucepan, add the drained macaroni, and stir to combine. The sauce will be a little thin but will thicken with baking. For the other layers of the casserole, pan fry the ground turkey with desired Italian spices, tomato sauce and the Kalamata olives. Add the meat mixture to the bottom of the ban. Top the turkey mix with a layer of low fat turkey pepperoni. Then add the creamy noodles on top so that the cheese sauce can drizzle down to the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle crumbled bread crumbs on top and add 1 tablespoon more of melted margarine. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the mixture bubbles and is lightly browned around the edges and the sauce is thick.
