Global Spectrum, the Bud Center’s management company, gets high praise _ó `ê~áÖ vçìåÖ

When Larimer County decided to include a 7,000-seat event center in its new fairgrounds complex, officials knew they were entering uncharted territory. The battered old fairgrounds southwest of downtown Loveland had the 14,000-square-foot multipurpose McMillen Building and an outdoor arena that could handle certain large events, but nothing on the scale of the Budweiser Events Center that planners had in mind. Something of that quality and size would need experienced management. “We clearly knew we didn’t have the expertise,” said Jay Hardy, who was hired in 2002 as The Ranch’s first manager. County officials talked with three management companies and decided on Philadelphia-based Global Spectrum for preopening services at the Budweiser Events Center, Hardy said. Global Spectrum ended up with a 10-year contract to operate the events center. “I would say that was the single best decision we made in that process, hiring that company,” Hardy said. “Much of what that building has become is because of Global Spectrum.”

What the county got for its contract with Global Spectrum was a relationship with one of the largest sports and entertainment companies in the world. Global Spectrum is owned by Comcast-Spectacor, which owns the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. It also owns Ovations Food Services, New Era Tickets and Front Row Marketing Services, all of which provide their services at the Budweiser Events Center. In addition to Larimer County’s events center, Global Spectrum manages 117 similar facilities around the world that hosted almost 20 million people at their events last year. “We manage everything to do with the arena — event coordinaSaturday, September 14, 2013

The Bud Center hosts 155 to 160 events each year, from 45 Colorado Eagles hockey games to the sixweekend-long Jehovah’s Witnesses district convention to Disney on Ice to Motley Crue.
“This industry is great,” Hontz said. “I just love how everything changes. One day you work with a Sammy Hagar show, the next day Sesame Street Live and the next day football.” To accomplish everything, Global Spectrum employs “a couple hundred” part-time workers and 19 fulltime employees, he said.
lå íÜÉ j~é
Hontz started as assistant manager before the Budweiser Events Center opened and became general
manager shortly after. He has seen Northern Colorado earn a place on the national entertainment map. “When we first started, nobody knew anything about the Northern Colorado market — agents, promoters, the big guys,” he said. So he and his colleagues spent a lot of time in Nashville and Los Angeles, talking up the new arena. “Now we have a name for ourselves. It’s a great family show market; the demographics are very appealing to promoters,” he said.
As evidence, the Bud Center has Disney on Ice and the Ringling Brothers circus every year. “Some of our shows outperform Denver,” he said, such as Cirque du Soleil two Jay Hardy years ago.
“I would say that was the single best decision we made in that process, hiring that company. Much of what that building has become is because of Global Spectrum.”

oÉéçêíÉêJeÉê~äÇ pí~ÑÑ têáíÉê
Did you know that for a short period of time, the iconic “TR” logo, immediately recognizable to so many in Larimer County, stood for “Thunder Ridge”? Once that name was chosen, a designer came up with a logo featuring a lightning bolt and an orange and brown color scheme. It’s the same logo that stands today. “About the same time, the motorcycle dealership on the opposite side of I-25 was developing, and we realized they were going to be called Thunder Mountain,” recalls Marc Engemoen, an early member of the complex’s planning committee. “We decided we couldn’t use the name Thunder Ridge as we had planned,
but since we really liked the TR logo, we focused on named that used TR. ... It seemed appropriate to refer to this property and this collection of structures that celebrated our agricultural heritage as “The Ranch.” The more we used the name, the more natural and comfortable it sounded, so that’s where we landed.” Jay Hardy, the original director of The Ranch, remembers considering about 50 different names before settling on the current one. One thing was certain, however: The Larimer County Fairgrounds and Events Complex was not going to be marketable.

The agreement also includes a one-time $300,000 capital investment in the facility from Global Spectrum that will enable it to increase revenue, Herrfeldt said. “It was the right name because it has branded Northern Colorado in allowing it to continue its agricultural roots while delivering something great to the people,” Rennels said. “You have folks across the state that truly identify with the Western heritage we have. ‘The Ranch’ means a larger perspective, and I think it was exactly the right name.”
“When somebody mentions fairgrounds, you have a visual of a hot, dusty midsummer place,” Hardy said. “That is absolutely the opposite of what we wanted people to think. ... We consciously made a decision to go through and create a name that was clear, concise and easy to remember.” Once the goals for the name were decided, “The Ranch” won out fairly easily. Former county commissioner Kathay Rennels credits Treasurer Myrna Rodenberger with proposing the name that would ultimately prevail.

Five Defining Moments
Reporter-Herald file photo
People raise their arms in the air and hold hands during the 2011 Heavenfest event at The Ranch in Loveland. Officials a The Ranch view events such as Heavenfest as the next area of growth in Northern Colorado’s entertainment scene.
Calendar is packed with hundreds of events, from hockey to political rallies _ó ^äÉñ _ìêåÉëë

If you live in Northern Colorado, there’s a good chance you’ve been to The Ranch for the annual Larimer County Fair, which now attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year. But the complex’s calendar is packed with hundreds more events, from heart-pounding hockey to spirited political rallies to top-notch agricultural showcases. With such a diverse array of entertainment options, chances are no Page 8
two people will have the exact same list of best memories on The Ranch. We’ve whittled the 10-year highlights down, however, and come up with five of the most defining moments in The Ranch’s history.
Colorado Eagles drop the puck
OK, so the Eagles’ 10-year sellout streak isn’t so much a moment as it is an unprecedented run that was one of the most pivotal success stories in The Ranch’s history. In fact, no other U.S. minor league team — baseball, hockey, curling or other-
wise — can lay claim to more consecutive sellouts than the Eagles, who own the longest-standing streak in the country. The Ranch’s first director, Jay Hardy, fought hard to deliver the Eagles to an area he firmly believed would embrace the camaraderie and family-friendly excitement of minor league sports. The team’s first home game proved Hardy correct, and then some. “That first night it was so evident that the fans were all there for one

reason, and it didn’t matter what their background was,” he said. “It’s really fun to see it continue to be successful.”
Widespread Panic rocks the BEC
The Ranch has played host to a long list of music legends, but the legendary gang of groove-masters known as Widespread Panic takes the cake as most memorable concert the Budweiser Events Complex has ever seen. For two straight nights in October pÉÉ aÉÑáåáåÖ jçãÉåíëI m~ÖÉ V Saturday, September 14, 2013.
DEFINING MOMENTS cêçã m~ÖÉ U 2007, the Georgia natives and jamband gods filled every single seat in the BEC, tingling the audience with long, energetic sets that The Ranch’s current director, Bob Herrfeldt, says have never been matched. “That was probably the quintessential concert that we’ve done. It was pretty epic,” he said.
Heaven Fest breaks records
If Widespread Panic may have been The Ranch’s most memorable concert, but the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Christian music bonanza Heaven Fest brought the powerhouse music festival to Loveland for two years of record-breaking attendance. 2011 was especially rollicking, setting the high mark for attendance at a Colorado outdoor music festival. More than 45,000 people showed up that year to rock with Skillet, Mercy Me and Jeremy Camp, among other Christian rock heavyweights. “It was about 104 degrees outside,” Herrfeldt said, “but it was awesome.”

the Eagles game are some of the hottest seats in town,” she said, to rousing applause. “I think it’s pretty safe to say that the Eagle fans know a little something about close contests, and we are looking to you to
help us in the final stretch of another close contest.” The 2008 election was ultimately not as successful as Palin had hoped, but her appearance remains one of the most memorable moments in The Ranch’s history.
Relief from High Park fire
Devastating more than 250 buildings and homes in Larimer County, the High Park fire of June 2012 became one of the most destructive fires in the history of Colorado. It took more than 2,000 firefighters and $30 million to contain the fire, but The Ranch also played a key role during the crisis, opening its doors for close to a month so that disaster relief teams could work together in a centralized hub. “If The Ranch wasn’t here, all those operations would’ve been carved up and put into gyms,” Herrfeldt said. “It was so nice to have one place where people could come. Our staff worked two months straight without a day off.” Alex Burness can be reached at 970-669-5050, ext. 521, or burnessa@reporter-herald.com. Follow him on Twitter @Alex_Burness.

How The Ranch staffers handle an emergency such as the High Park and Crystal Lake fires and the Windsor tornado is similar to what they do every day as they book, organize and staff events, shows and fairs. “The way we look at it is it’s an event for us,” said Bob Herrfeldt, director of The Ranch, which is owned and operated by Larimer County. “Because we’re so used to dealing with people and crowds, our staff is our largest asset out here.” The Ranch has the facilities to handle large-scale emergencies: meeting spaces, makeshift sleeping quarters, parking, public restrooms, food services and media and marketing capabilities. Several staff members are trained to use the same process to organize, schedule and staff events, and they have the know-how to set up audiovisual and other equipment for community meetings and general assemblies. Herrfeldt and his senior staff also Reporter-Herald file photos are trained in incident command on Katrina Ware, a High Park fire evacuee, takes care of her horses Friday at The Ranch. The American Red Cross used the Thomas M. McKee 4-H Building for its incident headquarters and to provide sleeping quarters for evacuees. The Red Cross demobilized at the end of July. With the help of the Sheriff’s Office and the Larimer Humane Society, evacuees could keep their livestock at the Ranch-Way Feeds Livestock Pavilion and their pets at the animal shelter. The Humane Society rescued 638 animals, including 150 chickens, from properties in the High Park fire area, sheltering some and sending some to The Ranch, said Bob Francella, Humane Society spokesman. “We work with The Ranch during
emergencies because they have adequate space and supplies to care for livestock, which we do not,” Porter said. “During the High Park Fire, The Ranch housed and cared for all of the horses and livestock that were evacuated.” A second way in which The Ranch serves as a community center is by making the McKee building available to nonprofits on a daily basis at low or no cost. “That building was built specifically for that reason to provide a location for 4-H and community events,” Herrfeldt said, adding that more than 900 events are held there each year. “The Ranch and Larimer County feels that part of our mission is making sure the community is taken care of,” he said. “We’re a public facility. We provide services back to the community.”

Bill Cosby helps The Ranch celebrate its birthday
Comedian will perform in same venue, 10 years after its opening _ó gÉëëáÅ~ _ÉåÉë
If You Go

Guests will probably see a table, a chair, a bottle of water and a box of tissues on stage at the Budweiser Events Center on Saturday. That’s because Bill Cosby doesn’t pace like some comedians who “walk, deliver a funny line and walk some more.” He sits and he talks and he has a good time. Cosby will perform as part of the 10-year anniversary celebration at The Ranch at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14. The country music group, Alabama, will follow that performance with a show at 7 p.m. Sunday. Cosby was the first act to take the stage at the Budweiser Events Center when The Ranch opened in September 2003. “(He) was our first event that opened at the Bud Center 10 years ago so it seemed perfect to have a correlation with him the same night,” said Liz Garcia, events coordinator with The Ranch. She said that the staff has been celebrating a decade of entertainment all year with great events, including a cupcake celebration at the Larimer County Fair in early August. The weekend of entertainment is a continuation of that celebration. Staff members will thank the partners, sponsors and steering committee that drove the event complex to fruition with an invite-only reception before Cosby’s performance Saturday evening. “I was lucky enough to be involved (with the events complex) from the very beginning,” said Rick Hontz, general manager of the Budweiser Events Center. “We were the only thing out here and to see the area around the arena grow... That’s one thing that arenas usually do; become a hub of development.” He said that the entertainment centers of Colorado used to include Denver and Colorado Springs, but Page 16

Sarah McLachlan and Disney on Ice. “Also seeing the Larimer County Fair and Rodeo grow so much has been very exciting,” she said. Cosby said that his intention as a comedian and character like Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show, was to be a friend in the living room, someone that his viewers knew and could relate to. He was once sitting at a Chinese restaurant. He was an undergraduate at Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn and had written some monologues but no one knew him yet. He saw a party of about nine people laughing and talking. A man was telling a story and everyone knew the tale and piped in with exclamations. Cosby realized that this was his style. That was how he wanted people to relate to him. Alabama has 40 years of music, records, and fans in its favor and are on a “Back to the Bowery” tour this fall to celebrate their first concert at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach. “What I’ve learned so far in being in this market is that Colorado loves outdoor events and Colorado loves music. I’d love to have more outdoor concerts of a music festival in the summertime,” The Ranch Director Bob Herrfeldt said.

Seeing that become a reality is one of the hopes officials have as they look forward on the 10-year anniversary of The Ranch to another decade and beyond.

great Years in Loveland
When Heaven Fest was at The Ranch before moving to Denver, the one-day Christian music festival drew as many as 35,000 people. When events like that set up shop, everyone benefits, said Rick Hontz, who is regional vice-president of Global Spectrum and general manager of the Budweiser Events Center. At the moment, and with the reconstruction of indoor arena and pavilions just completed, there are no plans for additional structures to join The Ranch. The focus now, Herrfeldt said, is rounding out their business plan. That means finding innovative ways to utilize the facilities as much as possible.
RANCH
“Our biggest focus right now is just taking what we have and leverage it,” Herrfeldt said. There are also about 80 undeveloped acres owned by The Ranch — 50 acres to the north and 30 acres to the south — and with the economy starting to turn, Herrfeldt hopes to see that space developed in the coming years. It’s anticipated that the south side of the property would blend in with the neighborhood, and Herrfeldt envisions retail or dining possibilities. “On the north side I think we’ve always looked at that as venue expansion, but you never know,” he said. In the short-term future at the Budweiser Events Center, country musician Chris Young comes at the end of the month, former presidential candidate Rick Santorum in October and Sesame Street Live in November, to name a few events. With a decade under its belt, the events center has built a reputation for itself the Hontz said they will continue to build on in the coming years. “Ten years ago people didn’t know Northern Colorado was its own market,” he said. “In the next 10 years, we’re going to continue to show people that Northern Colorado can support a show by itself and not have to rely on Denver.” Jessica Maher can be reached at 669-5050, ext. 516, or maherj@reporter-herald.com.
