STAR WARS Fanatics
Local fans dress the part for charity fundraiser
By Rhema Muncy For the Reporter-Herald The transformation of the Rialto Theater in Loveland to an Imperial starship from Star Wars happened in the blink of an eye. Storm troopers, death star gunners, Imperial officers, a jawa, Darth Vader and tusken raiders (or sand people) lined the sidewalk in front of the theater, mingling with guests before the showing of Star Wars Episode IV. As a charity fundraiser for the Loveland Public Library, the local 501st Legion Rocky Mountain Garrison showed up in their fan-built costumes to raise money for the cause and show off for fellow Star Wars culture fans. “We are a group of guys who enjoy making costumes in a Star Wars theme and parading around in them,” 501st Legion member Ed Litter said. “Anytime you see someone out in a costume in the public, we are raising money for charities. Any way that we can find a venue to utilize our costumes and our presence, we will find a way in.” A Loveland native, Litter has been a part of the organization for the last two years. There is a national branch and many regional branches. The local branch is comprised of Star Wars fans who live in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. “As long as you are a fanatic, you can meet a lot of people,” Litter said. “With any one of them you can strike up a conversation. We draw people from all walks of life. The only requirement is to have a costume.”
The 501st Legion connects Star Wars fans who are interested in creating costume replicas of Star Wars characters and helps them organize for good causes, Litter said. Locally, the Rocky Mountain Garrison has organized troop events for organizations around the region. Major charities they work with are Toys for Tots, the JDRF walk to Cure Diabetes, Hands and Voices, MakeA-Wish, the Candlelighters, United Blood Services, the Starlight Foundation and the Salvation Army. They take requests for events and are always looking for a chance to send a troop out for a good cause. Inside the lobby at the June 16 Rialto fundraiser, Litter chatted with his parents in his full Storm Trooper regalia. His first exposure to Star Wars was when the movie first came out. His father Ferd Litter took him to watch Star Wars Episode IV a few weeks after it opened. “See what you started by taking me to the movies?” Ed said. “Thank goodness you don’t decide to be Superman or Batman,” Ed’s mother Barbara Litter said. “I don’t have the build for that,” Ed replied. For more information on the Rocky Mountain Garrison, visit www.mg501. com. For more information on the national branch, Vader’s Fist 501st Legion, log onto www.501st.com.

Chilson Recreation Center expansion expected to be complete by December By Linzy Novotny For the Reporter-Herald The Chilson Recreation Center expansion is on schedule and due to be completed at the end of this year. The project will add around 18,000 square feet to the recreation center, with 80 percent of the center being remodeled or renovated. A new 140-car parking lot will also be built east of the center. Construction began in February, and completion is set for mid-December. Most of the expansion and renovations are in progress. The second-story addition currently underway is to the northeast side of Chilson. The addition will house the aerobics and dance room as well as the expanded weight lifting room. On the first level will be a multi-purpose gymnastics room. Work on the leisure pool addition has also started. The leisure pool will be zero depth entry complete with bubblers, spray cannons and water buckets. There will also be a 220-foot-long lazy river with water sprays, rapids, a vortex and an action channel. Activity space for aqua aerobics classes, water basketball and volleyball will be added. There will also be a new speed slide and children’s slide. New lounge, party room, family locker room and parking lot is also in the works. New cardio and strength equipment will be purchased for the center as well. Research is being done on which equipment should be purchased and the new equipment selection has not been finalized. As part of the Chilson Recreation Center expansion, the existing lap pool will be closed starting June 28 for renovations, said Chilson Recreation Center Manager Jill Krantz. The pool is expected to be closed until late September into early October. The pool will feature eight lanes for lap swimming and water walking, and will include new indoor and outdoor spas. All pool operating systems will be replaced. For more information on the project, visit www.ci.loveland.co.us.
