ART DIRECTOR & PHOTOEDITOR’S NOTE

REPORTER

W

e tell our stories not with words, but with imagery that takes our audience to dreamscapes, emotional depths, and unexplored environments. Often our subjects range

from the individuals we surround ourselves with to the trivial objects that inhabit our space, but this collection of moments are meant to intrigue the reader and provide a visual language that accompanies the literature of

Reporter writers. Not always are we so bold, but through a year of political tension, global pandemic, and turmoil in all forms, our voices were never silenced and now have never been louder. We are the creators who tell stories in our own way and showcase our love for our craft with this platform. This is the Art and Design issue. An encyclopedia of a year of isolation and the boldest telling of our stories.

JACK CONNOLLY I see it as being important to experiment with photos in a way that is either going to go completely nowhere or go somewhere that’ll leave a wanting for more pictures like it.

This shot was just capturing a lot of pressure I was having from the start of college and fear of if I was going to do well in college.

QUAMAE NEWSOME Believability over reality, I attempt to capture the essence of a subject through deliberately gestural mark making.

Art & Photo 13

RACHEL KOGUT I am inspired by the subtle uneasiness of the surreal, bizarre, chaotic, and abstract.

SAHANA MAHASWARAN The art I make is an expression of the social, political and personal events that shape my everyday life. They are a way for me to question the way we live and function in society.

Every prop, pop of color, pose, and swirl of art in a photograph speaks to someone. Never be afraid to show it.

GABRIELLA LICONA

The photos show how much I miss home and my childhood. The line art on the photos represent the disassociation between college life and home. Ironically the line art is connected into one singular line of a body figure and the photos on the desk. (Canon Powershot Camera and Procreate)

Always learn something new, then put your own unique twist on it.

Exploration of stippling brushes, color, shape, and typography. Inspired by 70’s aesthetic. (Adobe Illustrator)

I am constantly inspired by people and our perception of day-to-day experiences.

JESS EDWARDS My main mission in art is to tell stories and inspire others to collaborate with my ideas. Through color and lines I tell the stories that I wish I had experienced and pursue my vision by putting it on paper and displaying it to the world. (Digital)

I am a hard-of-hearing photographer that plays trumpet. Having audible FOMO has encouraged me to seek out and document ways of life different from my own.

The concept is centered around how we can help the earth while safe at home! Mother earth has been taking care of us for a very long time. She’s grown old weary, partly because of our doings, and since we are at the peak of our civilization, we must restore her youth and power. (Digital)

PALLAVI SINGH

Illustration created for a visiting card for a tourist spot. I chose Bristol Mountain as I wanted to capture the vivid experience of sliding down the snowy with a twilight sky. (Digital)

I believe in the power of visual storytelling to craft evocative and meaningful narratives, be it digital or print. My passion for illustration and abstraction helps me to capture my vision in different ways unique to the content, taking inspiration from everything.

NEIL WILLIAMSON The themes are romance, rain, and an atmosphere of space. Not everything I make is so abstract, but that feeling is what I strive to evoke.
