Celebrate Halloween at the Freaky 5K

Halloween will be coming early this year in the Rumford section of East Providence!

Ghost and goblins will be running amok, along with clowns, cartoon characters, and super heroes!

On Sunday, October 21, 2012, at 10 AM, the East Providence Firefighters will hold their annual Freaky 5K road race starting at the Rumford fire station. This Halloween themed road race is designed for runners or walkers of all age groups and experience levels! Participants are encouraged to wear tasteful costumes.

The runner(s) with the best costume are awarded a prize and featured on the following years race T-shirt! The Freaky 5K attracts 200-250 runners annually. The race is also highlighted with our post-race Firehouse Chili! All proceeds from the Freaky 5K go to the East Providence Firefighters Community Fund!

The Community Fund provides money in the form of sponsorships and donations to various community groups in and around the city of East Providence, such as youth sports, scholarships, Thanksgiving food baskets, and Christmas presents for needy children. Think Before You Vote

I’m sending this letter in response to my fellow Townie Wendy Caputo (A Relatively “Blue” Community). Apparently, it hasn’t occurred to Ms. Caputo that maybe the reason why we’re seeing a lot of Brandon Doherty signs is because he isn’t a professional politician. That’s a resume enhancer in my book. Reading her letter last month gave me the impression that she has an issue with Mr. Doherty’s lack of experience as a politician. Is that not exactly what we need? I wonder if she held these same views when a politically inexperienced community organizer with practically no understanding of the private sector decided to run for President four years ago. I’m sure she voted for him, but I digress. I would only suggest that if anyone wants to know who David Cicilline is, just take a look at the shining city of Providence, its dismal economic situation, poverty, and education system.

I also found it entertaining to read about the blame of Republicans and Tea Party Conservatives for Mr. Cicilline’s ineffectiveness. I find it interesting that Ms. Caputo fails to mention that at the same time our relatively blue community sent the distinguished David Cicilline to Congress, the rest of this great country sent Conservatives to the House of Representatives in an attempt to stop a disastrous President, Harry Ried, and Nancy Pelosi.

I would urge all Conservatives, Independents, and Liberals to vote for Brandon Doherty not only to get rid of an ineffective Congressman, but also to help reapply the founding principles that made this nation great.

What Is The Confusion About?

Earlier this year the state appointed East Providence Budget Commission announced in no uncertain terms that in order to develop a balanced budget for the City of East Providence it had cut all funding for the Middle School Sports program in city schools for the next few years. The stated amount of those cuts was $106,000. (In addition funds were cut for this years fall sports program, which is part of the current budget.) That prompted a group of concerned citizens to organize a group called “Project 106” whose sole purpose is to support funding for sports in the middle schools.

You may have seen their yard signs or attended other fundraising activities in East Providence. In recent weeks rumors have floated around town that there was indeed sufficient funding for Middle School Sports. I am not sure who is responsible for those rumors, but they are apparently being fueled by some of our elected officials who have claimed publicly that funds may be available for middle school sports.

In recent public meetings of both the school board and city council the question was raised as to whether or not they are available for middle school sports. The question was not answered directly. But when a representative of Project 106 recently confronted the Budget Commission directly on the subject, the answer was “no, funds are not in the budget for middle school sports”. I have two questions. First, why do our elected officials on the city council and the school board not know that funds are not in the budget for middle school sports? …and second, why are these rumors being circulated (and by whom)? Is there something we don’t know, or are our elected officials playing political games with our children’s (and grandchildren’s) lives? Or perhaps this is an attempt by some in this community to undermine and discredit the “Project 106” movement? Whatever the reason, we can only hope that some straight answers are forthcoming. continued on next page...

Ed Lynch, candidate for Ward I City Council, responds to the Pond View closing.

Several weeks ago, I visited Pond View and completed a tour of the facility with the manager. I left there realizing that the business was in serious financial trouble with the distinct possibility of them going bankrupt in the near future, which obviously has now happened. Campaigning door-to-door, I have asked many residents, including my opponent in the council race, if anyone has ever visited Pond View. The answer was an emphatic “no.” I had told the residents of Rumford that it was only a matter of time before the gates would be locked, and it turned out that I, like many, was right. Fortunately, due to a financial collapse, Pond View will be closed for good, and our attention must now focus on the clean-up of the facility. We must make certain that DEM closely monitors the clean-up in concert with our city inspectors to ensure that the property and our community are restored to its natural state. If elected, I pledge to carry out that process with speed and determination.

As a candidate for Ward I City Council and a former state representative, I still have several questions regarding Pond View’s inception into all our backyards.

My opponent, a former city solicitor, never complained about Pond View when he worked for the city of East Providence. Astoundingly, he waited until he was released from his prominent position as solicitor by the present city council to begin his attack of the facility and build a platform against the city that he once represented. Most recently, he attended a city council meeting and recommended that a new lawyer (costly environmental attorney) be hired to fight Pond View.

The taxpayers of East Providence should be fed up with the past council and school committee decisions to hire outside lawyers to fight issues that has put our city

October 2012 The Reporter further in debt for years to come. For example, how much have we spent on outside legal counsel to fight Pond View? That is the job for a competent city solicitor, not costly outside lawyers. Another example, the former school committee spent over one million dollars for one lawyer to fight the school teachers, who have made copious contractual concessions that benefited the city to include paying more for their benefits. The teachers were willing to be part of the solution, not the costly legal problem that left our city on the verge of bankruptcy. We need ethics, civility, leadership and positive communication to bring our workforce and community together, not costly legal battles.

In 2009, the former city manager, with support from the mayor and school committee, fired former building inspector Al Quattrucci because he announced publically that the high school should be shut down due to numerous health problems. Ultimately, the state officials were called in and proclaimed that Mr. Quattrucci was indeed correct in his decision of safeguarding our student populace.

He won a wrongful termination suit against the city that is slated to cost the taxpayers of our city $200,000 to $500,000. Additionally, the city also had to pay for the cost of his legal fees, an additional cost (financial burden) to the taxpayers.

I ask, does that make common sense? Let’s stop paying for outside lawyer fees when we have the ability to hire a professional city solicitor and legal team. Let the city’s legal team direct the city council and school committee on important issues to start rebuilding our city together. I can assure you that I will work ardently with the new city council to select a highly component legal staff instead of appointing a politically connected attorney, in an effort to safeguard your tax dollars.

Pond View, which began in 1998, should never have received a license for a recycling company in East Providence. It was passed by the zoning board and city council with legal advice (counsel) from the city solicitor. I asked my opponent one question, “How did Pond View get their license?” He replied that the city council could not override the zoning board, although the zoning board is appointed by the city council members. I thought that this response was absurd! By only informing the voters that legally the city council cannot override the zoning board is simply not doing enough in my opinion, especially for the Ward I residents. I will always stand up for the taxpayers and the Ward-I district and advocate with vigor to avoid the past pitfalls of our local government to resolve issues in their infancy.

I strongly believe that Pond View should never have been allowed to come into East Providence. The company was evicted from Rehoboth, and then they were allowed into our city while everyone pointed the finger at everyone else. I was not on the inside track of politics or an employee of the city like my opponent when Pond View crept into our backyards. I have lived in this district my entire life and raised my family and now have the privilege of seeing my grandchildren live in the Ward-I district. I pledge to the residents of Ward I and the city that, under my watch, I will never allow this type of facility to fall through the cracks again and put your safety to sleep in the bureaucratic or political process that has caused many of you discourse. I truly believe that my opponent, a former city employee, only raised the anti-Pond View flag once he was replaced as our city solicitor.

I will also be exploring the option of privatizing the legal department if the option provides us with a highly competent legal team that is ultimately cost efficient to the taxpayers. I will not be appointing the politically best solicitor for the city council - I will be hiring the best person or law firm after an open and fair (cost efficient) process is vetted.

My family and grandchildren who proudly live in the Ward-I district are counting on my experience, vision and integrity to build a better East Providence for their generation and yours. I respectfully ask for your support this November…

Protect Our Children

I have a son starting kindergarten and this year at the Waddington Elementary School in Riverside, RI. Bus service has been cut to our neighborhood due to budget cuts. The transportation department for the East Providence School Department has changed their policy and says that the due to the distance from our house to the school my 5 year old child can walk.

He would have to cross Willett Ave at either Legion Way or at the Shaw’s Plaza in order to go to school. I’m being told that a crossing guard is being added to assist students in crossing the street safely. There are still many side streets that have to be crossed as well as the danger of a 5 year old child walking the same route at the same time 5 days a week.

This is unacceptable to me and I’m only one of about 100 families being affected by this. In the meantime out of town bus service to private schools is still being provided to students who live in East Providence. My high school aged step son is being provided town bus service, which to me is absurd because his bus stop is literally on a RIPTA route (33) that goes by the high school.

The Director of Transportation for the East Providence School Department left me a voicemail today saying bus service to our neighborhood will not happen. He also told me he’s heard from other families complaining about the situation but nothing can be done. I and the other families would greatly appreciate being able to shed light on this story.

Jim Briden Is A True Community Leader

In September, the current operation of Pond View was closed down and a clean-up process will soon begin. This is an important victory for the residents of East Providence.

Be that as it may, I would like to caution that this case is not over since the owner of the property will probably want to have this site continue to operate as a C&D facility, will press forward with the zoning appeal and will likely seek the transfer of the license from DEM. Jim Briden explained all of this to residents after he attended the Pond View hearing in Superior Court on September 11, 2012.

Mr. Briden is running for the Ward 1 council seat. As many of you know, Jim has been strongly advocating on our behalf against the expansion of Pond View for the past two years. This has included addressing the City Council on a regular basis and continuously advising our group on important strategy and courses of action.

James Briden has been a true friend to Ward 1.

Mr. Briden served as East Providence’s Solicitor/Attorney from 2008 to 2010 and is a partner in the law firm Blais Cunningham & Crowe Chester, LLP. He attended the Gordon School, graduated from Moses Brown, Boston College with a degree in economics, and the University of Arizona College of Law. Most importantly, Jim is a truly good person and his actions over the past two years have empowered our community.

Why: To celebrate another year SCLT is helping people in Greater Providence grow food in the city and to toast to a deeper commitment to growing food everywhere SCLT’s beloved Harvesting Hope event is back! This year, Harvesting Hope will be an early evening, rather than early morning, event that will still feature the inspiring stories and delicious fare that have made this SCLT’s signature fundraising event.

Guests will be treated to garden cocktails and food truck hors d’oeuvres. Matt and Kate Jennings of Farmstead will be preparing the event’s signature cocktail, made with locally grown ingredients.

Food trucks including Chez Pascal’s Hewtin Dogs Mobile Food Truck, Mijos Tacos, and Like No Udder will provide delicious hors d’oeuvres. Guests will leave with a goodie bag full of autumnal produce grown by members of SCLT’s Providence Community Growers Network, plus a deeper commitment to growing food everywhere!

Rally 4 Recovery

Once again, East Bay Center participated in the “Rally 4 Recovery”, which was recently held at the Roger Williams Memorial Park in downtown Providence. The day was sunny and breezy, and over five thousand (5,000) people joined in to celebrate recovery from mental illness and addictions through delicious food, incredible music, family activities, and the sharing of strength and support through inspirational stories. Legislative leaders and service providers from all over RI came together to showcase available programs and resources available to individuals and families, and to reinforce the high standard of services consumers should expect in RI. EBC’s booth was consistently busy throughout the day, as children focused their energies on creating foam bookmarks, picture frames, and personalized door hangers. Our volunteer, Sara, kept a steady stream of crafters busy, while EBC staff spoke with individuals, parents, caregivers, and other providers, about the various services available for consumers of all ages. EBC provides varying levels of treatment based on the acuity of the illness. While some clients may only require several office-based visits with a therapist, others may benefit from more intensive wrap-around services, including medication prescribed by one of our psychiatrists.

One of the most touching moments of the event came when a small boy shyly approached the EBC table with his grandmother.

When Sara encouraged him to create a door hanger, he thoughtfully selected each piece that he placed on the backing and then used colored markers to finish his masterpiece. Sara affixed a loop so that he could hang it up, and asked him what he planned to do with his creation. He looked up at her, and said: “I want you to have it.

I made it just for you.” At first no one knew just what to say. Such a simple act of complete selflessness coming from a young child was inspiring! Sara accepted his generous gift and then gave him the sample that she had made earlier, and asked him to hang this on his door at home, so he would remember her too. His sweet gapped-tooth smile beamed up at her as he thanked her; then he and his grandmother left to enjoy other activities.

At the conclusion of the event, sponsors proceeded to the City’s WaterFire celebration, and lighted candles in support of loved ones and providers who work tireless towards the goal of recovery for all in need.

Budget cuts and consolidation of services has changed the face of athletics throughout Rhode Island and certainly in East Providence. High School girls’ softball is the latest Townie team to face a major reconfiguration of sorts. The softball team has played its’ home games at the Pierce Stadium complex for some 20 years. “Pierce is the best field in the state and Joe Medeiros (Pierce Complex Manager) has been great to us, but economics forced us to play our home games behind the high school,” said team veteran head coach Rob Traverse. The city no longer provides buses for home games and the only way for players and coaches to get to home games was by car. “I received many questions from parents about liability with the girls driving to and from games in their own cars. We also have to get the equipment to Pierce, etc.,” said Traverse. “We will miss Pierce. Even in inclement weather, Joe had the field ready for us.”

A softball field has always existed behind the high school, bordered by tennis courts and the Career Center parking lot. The team has practiced there but the area is wide open and used by gym classes and other city youth groups. The outfield area is also used by track teams and some football groups. So not really getting any answers to the liabilities of students driving themselves to school-sponsored interscholastic events, Traverse and his players began to fund raise. “We need the funds to fix the practice field at school so it would be suitable for high school caliber softball,” said traverse.

In addition to volunteer efforts to raise money, some state legislators have forwarded grants toward this project. Late last month, State representative Joy Hearn, Democrat in District 66 procured and gave the team a check for $7,000. Hearn’s district includes Barrington and now parts of East Providence. “I am glad to help and get to know more Townies,” said Hearn. “No one does athletic events like those I’ve seen here and at Pierce,” she added. Also promising a legislative grant of $6,000 is a donation from State Representative Helio Melo and State Senator Daniel DaPonte. Melo and DaPonte are both Democrats and chairs of their respective House and Senate Finance Committees for the state. Last year Melo and DaPonte were able to provide Orlo Avenue School with $30,000 for a major playground and green area grant for that concrete surrounded school.

Traverse explained that the project will be done in three phases. “Phase one will be for the purchase and installation of fencing. Permanent fencing will be placed down the right and left sidelines. A movable outfield fence will be used which can be removed during our off-season so that outside groups can use the

October 2012 field,” explained Traverse. Phase two will consist of constructing two dugouts and the final phase will be for grass seeding and the actual field rehabilitation.

“When coach Traverse asked me for help I was glad to join this effort. These grants are tough to come by and I thought that this project was worth it. I went to high school before girls could play sports, all we had was cheerleading,” recalled Representative Hearn referring to a time before Title IX. “I am glad that it will be safer for the girls to play their games right here at school,” Hearn added.

“I like the idea of playing our home games here at school,” said senior player Lindsee Allienello. “It helps to play where our team is used to practicing,” other teammates added. Also on hand to receive the Hearn presentation were team players, Amy DeCastro, Nicole Strik and Lucianna Medici.

“I am very appreciative and want to thank Joy Hearn, Daniel DaPonte and Helio Melo for their help as well as everyone who has donated to our effort to get this project underway,” said Traverse.

“Yes,” but as one source - not associated with girls softball - told the Reporter, “let’s see if the city keeps up a regular maintenance plan to keep the field in shape for years to come.

The Nov. 6 election is the next big test of the state’s new Voter ID law. Beginning this year, voters are being asked to show an ID when they vote at the polls.

Poll workers will accept a wide range of common IDs including a R.I. driver’s license, state ID card, RIPTA bus pass, college ID and employee ID. Voters who already have an acceptable photo ID do not need the special Voter ID. Voter ID will be phased in over two election cycles. In 2012 and 2013, voters can also use a variety of non-photo IDs including a Social Security card, bank statement or any government-issued document. Beginning in 2014, only photo ID will be accepted.

Most importantly, no eligible voter will be denied the right to vote. Voters who do not bring an acceptable ID to the polls can vote using a standard Provisional Ballot. If the signature they give at their polling place matches the signature on their voter registration, their ballot will be counted.

Voters who do not already have an acceptable photo ID can obtain a free one at the Secretary of State’s Elections Division, 148 West River St., Providence, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or at any of the dates and locations posted on the Secretary of State’s website at sos.ri.gov.

In order to obtain a free photo ID, voters must bring proof of identity such as a Social Security card, credit or debit card, utility bill or any government-issued document. The ID, which includes a color photo of the voter and the voter’s full name as it appears in the state’s voter registration database, will be created on the spot.

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding Rhode Islanders that they have until Sun., Oct. 7, to register to vote in November’s election.

State law requires Rhode Islanders to register at least 30 days before an election in order to be eligible to vote. In addition, state law requires voters who have moved or changed their names since the last time they voted to re-register to vote.

Although the deadline falls on a Sunday, local election officials have made arrangements for residents to register to vote at the East Providence Police Station from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, Mollis will open his office at 148 West River St., Providence, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for last-minute registrations.

In order to register, you must be at least 18 years old by Nov. 6, a resident of Rhode Island and a U.S. citizen.

Orlo Avenue Volunteers Give Thanks!!

by Bob Rodericks The Orlo Avenue School playground volunteers wish to send the EP community the following note of appreciation. The amazing transformation at Orlo Avenue Elementary School continues.

A large play structure including a swing set was installed during the September 21st – 23rd weekend.

Over the weekend over 100 volunteers helped wherever it was needed from painting the fence to rolling out and gluing the turf under the structure. This unselfish help from members of our community is truly inspiring for our children. Some of our volunteers have been with us for the entire transformation and have taken on this project and done more than we ever could have imagined.

The Orlo Avenue PTA would like to sincerely thank all of the wonderful volunteers that helped make the dream of a playground at Orlo Avenue Elementary a reality. The parents, children and community of Orlo Avenue Elementary are forever grateful for your hard work and commitment to make this happen. Each of the volunteers will receive a note of thanks from the students at Orlo.

A few more projects need to be completed including the grass installation on October 13th and an official ribbon cutting event will be scheduled for the Spring of 2013.

We were very fortunate to have a playground committee made up of parents, teachers and community volunteers. The significant amount of time these individuals have put into this project have resulted in an unbelievable transformation.

EPHS girls Volleyball is off to a good start with a 5 & 2 record in 2nd place. The start wasn’t pretty, but the ending sure was. EP handed Ponaganset the first game but fought back to show some grit and determination that had yet to be seen this season.

Mary Monagle led the team with 10 kills and 8 digs. Izzy Newton continued her solid play with 26 assists, 3 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces.

Nicole Strik ripped 8 aces and really turned the match into our favor in game 4 with tough serving. Coach Alex Butler gives a special thanks to the Townie Student Section who came out in force and really gave the team a lift. The Townies responded from an earlier tough loss and took care of business against Bay View.

Mary Monagle and Hannah Drolet combined for 19 kills and Izzy Newton turned in a strong performance with 24 assists, 2 kills and 2 blocks.

EPHS football has a way to go after losses to Woonsocket and Foxboro (non-league) and an injury fund scrimmage loss to St Rays. The townies are 0 & 1 in division play after a 42-13 loss to Hendricken. The Townies have a young roster this year but “we’ll get better,” said veteran coach Sandy Gorham. EP is 0 & 3 overall.

EPHS Boys Cross Country has 2 wins and 3 losses with 176 points and 128 points against. EPHS Girls Cross Country are 2 & 4 with 221 points for and 155 points against.

EPHS Boys soccer 4&2 overall 5th place in a tough 15 team Div 1. The team is off to one of its’ better starts in several seasons and the games have been very exciting. Wins came over Chariho, Cumberland, Hope and Rogers. EPHS Girls soccer is 1 & 4. The team’s one win was an impressive 5-1 victory over Johnston.

BayView Academy sits at 4&2 in girls’ volleyball having a good season to date. BayView has impressive wins over TollGate, Chariho, LaSalle and Classical. They are in third place behind EP and Mount St. Charles. In field hockey Bay View has a 2&4 record and sits in 4th place in the tough Division One North. In Division One soccer Bay View sits in 7th place with a 2&3 record. In the tightly knit Division 1 Met B, BayView is in third with a 4&2 record.

This year’s Watchemoket Square Day will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. It is a celebration of Watchemoket Square’s past, present and future. Indoor and outdoor activities will take place on or near Warren Avenue in the City.

It will feature bands, local organizations, and cars and vehicles en route to the Classic Car Show at Hot Rides, Inc. at 30 Veterans Memorial Parkway. The car show is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will feature activities for children including a bounce house, food and face painting. Happy Watchemoket Square Day!

There will be lots of fun activities for kids and adults throughout the day. Breakfast or lunch specials will be served at the local establishments: Dee’s Place, The Watchemoket Tavern, The 133 Club and East Providence Yacht Club.

The popular, annual church bazaar at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 81 Warren Avenue will also be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Watchemoket Square (pronounced Watch-uh-Mocket or WatchMoe-ket) began near Bold Point and was used by the Wampanoag Indians to cross the Seekonk River to what is now Providence.

Watchemoket is an Indian word meaning the proximity of the river and the tidal marsh… with the feel and smell of the area.

In the early years of East Providence, which was then known as Rehoboth, Massachusetts, the site was the best place to cross the river. In 1793, John Brown of Providence built a bridge from Fox Point (Providence) to Bold Point. In 1885, an iron bridge was built which led to development in the area; including an inn followed by over one hundred businesses. By 1906, Watchemoket Square became the central business district of East Providence and covered approximately nine acres of land in the central section of the town.

8th Annual Townie Pride Parade October 6th

We want to let you know that planning is underway for the 2012 Townie Pride Parade.

Last year’s parade was a wonderful event and, with your continued support, we hope to make this year’s even better.

Please mark the date of Friday, October 5th on your calendar for the 2012 Townie Pride Parade. The event will be similar to last year.

We ask that each school gather a group of parents, students, teachers and staff on the baseball field before the football game begins. The baseball gate will be opened at 5:30pm.

Schools are encouraged to make banners, hold balloons, and find creative ways to show their Townie Pride and school spirit. We will parade around the track inside Pierce Field, led by the East Providence High School marching band and cheerleaders. Elementary children must be accompanied by an adult if marching. Families and children are then invited to stay and watch the EPHS football game. At 6:10pm the baseball field gate will close and all spectators will be directed to enter the stadium through the main gate.

The parade will begin promptly at 6:15 pm.

Admission is FREE with a donation of a canned good to all who wish to participate in the parade or Admission: $5.00/Adult or $5.00/Student If you have any questions, please e-mail jdegoes@epschoolsri. com. If you have never been to this local quilt show, you won’t want to miss the Piecemakers quilt show on October 13th from 10AM to 3PM. Located at the corner of Newman and Pawtucket Avenue in Rumford is the Newman Congregational Church, home to “The Piecemakers” quilting group. Although the group is only 12 years old, the church was established in 1643 and is a well recognized building in the community. The Piecemakers were founded by Eileen Lovett in 2000, along with several other quilters from the church and neighboring communities. Since that time, the membership has grown to over three dozen members. As Sue Tierney says, “The Piecemakers are a great group of quilters who offer lots of creativity and inspiration.” As long time member Nancy Poor says, “it is a caring, nurturing group of women with a passion for quilting who never judge a person by their ability and there is never any pressure.”

Over the past twelve years, The Piecemakers have expanded their activities from informal gatherings to lessons on quilting and techniques, sharing knowledge of their craft, friendly competitions and many charitable works. Perhaps the project closest to their hearts is the “Ginny” quilt. Named after the late church member Ginny Abel, these special quilts of pink and red are given to women suffering serious illness to provide comfort and warmth. Quilts were also made and shipped to hurricane Katrina victims and shelters in the community. Other charity projects include raising funds for TAPIN in Barrington, the Good Neighbor Energy Fund and the RI Food Bank.

This year, The Piecemakers will hold their 6th biennial quilt show on October 16th. There will be numerous quilts on display from their work of the past two years, a delightful array of quilted bags and varied interpretations of a pinwheel design wall-hanging that was the 2012 Summer Challenge. The church sanctuary will become a gallery and you won’t have to keep quiet as you walk through and view the beauty of these quilts! Admission to the show is only $4.00.

October 2012 The Piecemakers also support the annual Newman Christmas bazaar to raise funds for charity. This year the bazaar will be held on December 1st. and at that time a special quilt will be raffled off.

The theme of the quilt this year is a “Christmas Sampler”. Tickets for this unique quilt will be available at the quilt show and all the proceeds go to the church Missions Committee. Quilted items and seasonal gifts will also be for sale at the bazaar.

Membership to The Piecemakers is open to everyone and if you have ever been interested in learning a new skill or expanding the skills you have, information will be available at the show. You can also visit the Newman Church website www.newmanucc.org to check the calendar for the meeting schedule.

East Providence Land Conservation Trust and the Ten Mile River Watershed Council Hunter’s Moon Walk

Please join the East Providence Land Conservation Trust and the Ten Mile River Watershed Council for a free Hunter’s Moon Walk on Monday, October 29th. We will meet at the Turner Loop Trail Parking Area on route 114A (across from Hunt’s Mills) in East Providence at 6:15 pm and the walk starts promptly at 6:30. We will follow the trail into Bridgham Farm. The walk will visit the Ten Mile River, Turner Reservoir, and the Newman Oak which is said to be over 300 years old. This walk replaces the Harvest Moon Walk, which was cancelled due to a threat of EEE and West Nile Virus.

Hunter’s Moon will be cooler and should be free of mosquitoes.

Local Drum Corps

In percussion music, a rudiment is one of the basic patterns used in rudimental drumming. These patterns of drum strokes can be combined in many ways to create music. A local Seekonk based drum corps, The Yankee Volunteers, is proud of their drum line of accomplished rudimental drummers. By utilizing the methods of the rudiments, the drumming of each individual is tight, which allows the drummer to perfect difficult rhythms and tunes.

The Yankee Volunteers (YV) will soon begin accepting new drummers into their ranks with the start of their next season. While performing in such parades and events as the Bristol 4th of July Parade, Gaspee Days Parade, and several St. Patrick’s Day events, the drummers play 18th century style wooden, rope tension drums.

These drums are hand made and are worn in the traditional style, slung over the left shoulder.

Each season the YV highlights their season with an all expense paid concert tour. In the past years the group has performed in many locations including: Washington, DC, Disney World, Niagara, NY, Nantucket Island, MA and London, England. to the city manager for four years, before being appointed city clerk, where she remained for the next 14 years until her retirement in 2004. Soon after, she was elected to the East Providence City Council, where she served three terms, from 2004-2010.

Today she is the 2014-15 district governor nominee for Rotary District 7950, which includes 67 Rotary clubs throughout Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts, the Cape, and the Islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

The Citizens Bank Foundation grants $2,500 to Bread of Life Food Pantry in honor of volunteer Valerie Costa

East Providence, RI - Citizens Bank recently announced the winner of its 2012 Be Inspired award. This award recognizes colleagues who perform exemplary service in the community. Valerie Costa of Business Services Risk was recognized for her commitment to the Bread of Life Community Food Pantry. Valerie became a founding member of the food pantry three years ago, and now serves as the Inventory Coordinator. Through a partnership with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, Valerie works to collect more than 58,000 lbs of food each year to stock the pantry. The Bread of Life food pantry is a collaborative effort of six East Providence churches dedicated to meeting the nutritional needs of more than 180 local households each month, which in turn provides 500 people with food. Since its opening in 2009, Valerie has dedicated more than 138 hours each year to the pantry. Valerie also eagerly supports the local Relay for Life and Spirit of Giving campaigns. During a recent charity auction and with the support of Citizens Bank colleagues and the local community, Valerie raised $18,000 for the pantry. As part of the award, the Citizens Bank Foundation donated $2,500 to the Bread of Life food pantry on behalf of Valerie. This award is part of the bank’s Colleagues in Action program, which recognizes the importance of community volunteerism.

(ARA) - The cooling weather signals most homeowners to retire their lawn and garden equipment for the year. But before you stow away the rakes and hoes, remember that fall offers a unique opportunity for starting projects that can yield beautiful landscape results next year. According to the 2011 American Time Use Survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans who dedicate time to lawn and garden care spend on average more than two hours a day maintaining their outdoor spaces. While a beautiful yard takes effort, there are ways you can better utilize the time, money and energy you spend on maintenance. Keep these tips in mind when tackling the landscape during the cooler months:

1. Rake and pick up leaves.

If leaves are left scattered on the lawn, grass won’t grow as well in the spring. Don’t worry about removing leaves from plant beds, as they actually help insulate and feed plants during the winter months.

2. Take advantage of fall planting opportunities.

3. Mulch plant beds.

Fall Needs for TAPIN

Fall is here, and the East Bay area clients of TAPIN (Touch A Person In Need) are requesting many more blankets and comforters specially in the larger (full/queen/king) sizes. They are also seeking more house ware items such as soup and crock pots, toaster ovens, coffee makers, mixers and blenders, etc. Curtains and draperies are also very popular items. Of course, furniture needs are always at the top of the list. Bed and bureau needs are at the top, but recliners, love seats, sofas, and kitchen sets are also always in multiple numbers.

The Ride Desk is also seeing an increase in the need for rides for medical appointments. Volunteer drivers are always greatly appreciated and may accept only those drives that they find convenient as far as time, distance, day, etc. are concerned. Over the many years since TAPIN was first founded a great number of friendships have evolved through this wonderful service… a win/win for all!

There is a special request this week from an elderly client who finds the newer light weight telephones difficult to handle and is hoping someone will donate an older model with a heavier receiver. She also mentioned that if anyone has a footstool they are not using she would love to have it.

The emergency Food Closet continues to supply an enormous amount of food to an increasing number of clients each month, so donations of non-perishable items are always needed and greatly appreciated. With school back in session, snack items and juice boxes are especially welcome.

Donations may be dropped off at TAPIN which is located in the lower level of the Library building on County Rd. during regular office hours of 9 to noon, Mon thru Fri. when visitors are also welcome to learn more about the organization. The cool air has come to Providence reminding us the change of seasons is imminent. This looming inevitability of cool days is the first that it is time for a new stage, the beginning of wonderfully exciting things to come. Last week the doors to FBP sprang open with all the vibrato of opening day at McCoy Stadium as anxious and excited students returned, and in some cases, walked through the double doors on Hope Street for the first time. This week the second phase of the opening ceremonies take place with the return of the company. Just as with students, there are new faces gracing the halls of the now vibrant Hope Street studios. Artistic director, Misha Djuric announces the addition of Alan Alberto, Ruth Whitney, Alex Lantz, Elizabeth Mochizuki and Harunaga Yamakawa into the company. Former trainees Brenna DiFrancesco, Madeleine Issa and Tegan Rich have all been promoted to apprentice positions.

Every season the FBP junior company experiences the same sort of fluctuation and transformation that the professional company does. This 2012-2013 season is no different. The following students have been named as junior company trainees: Lan Pricolo, Olivia Luicanno. Lucy Ehrlich, Brandon McGuirk, Joseph Lynch, and Julia Feeley.

Promotions into the junior company from their former trainee positions include: Jane Schiavone, Isabella Mclea, Olivia Kczmarzyk, Michaela Dalton, Olivia Frangos and Tanith Benedick. Congratulations to all!

According to the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, “the activity of selling cookies is directly related to our purpose of helping all girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident, and resourceful citizens.”

But it’s more than just about selling cookies. In addition to being a main fundraiser for Girl Scout troops every year, each troop contributes a portion of the proceeds from their hard work to benefit a charitable cause.

This year, in light of the organization’s 100th anniversary, the girls of GSRI chose the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation in memorial of the Girl Scouts of America founder, Juliette Gordon Low, who lost her life to breast cancer. Creeping above last year’s contribution to the RISPCA, the Girl Scout troops presented the Gemma Foundation with a check for $5820.04 to improve and support the resources offered by the foundation.

With the donation from GSRI, the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation can continue to build awareness and offer free resources and preventative services to the community, survivors and those living with breast cancer.

The Reporter October 2012 Nutrition Program: The center provides a nutritional meal to approximately 125 seniors per day. The Cranston Senior Center provides the meals.

Case Management / Senior Services: The center coordinates with East Bay Community Action Program Inc., for all casework and follow-ups. Protective Services Council, made up of city departments and mental health/social service agencies, meets monthly to discuss problems concerning the elderly.

Transportation: The center has two buses that are used daily for door-to-door transportation to and from the center.

Notary: This service is available in the Administration Office at no charge.

Seminars: Monthly social, educational, and financial seminars on topics relating to seniors.

Manicurist: A manicurist visits the center weekly for manicures and polish changes.

Gift Shop: The gift shop has many different items for the convenience of the seniors. Small items from candy and greeting cards to jewelry, handmade items and crafts are available.

Edward R. Lynch, candidate for the Ward 1 City Council

has been inquiring about several buildings that are owned by the city of East Providence.

Lynch stated, “In this district, for example, there is the old Union Primary School on Pawtucket Avenue, which is handicap accessible and has ample parking. I believe it could be sold or rented easily and would make an excellent location, for example, for possibly a physical therapy office or a rehabilitation center. Thus, people from the area would have easy access to such facilities.

The Rumford Library, which was recently closed due to monetary problems, could also be sold or rented. I believe it would be a good location for a law firm or other small businesses. The library also has an adequate parking area. I have been in contact with three realty women in the area who could appraise these buildings and put them on the market as long as the city approves. Michelle Rockwell, Kathy Pierard, and Jean Clarke would have the knowledge and experience to sell or rent these buildings.

My main concern is the former FRAM building on the corner of Pawtucket and Campbell Avenues, which has parking for more than 150 vehicles. The building, which has been boarded up for years, should be demolished, as it is now nothing but an eyesore for the people living on Campbell Avenue and the surrounding area. The building has asbestos in it, and there are actually trees growing through the building. But in this day and age with the economy being so strained, developers could contract to have this building razed, and the cost would likely be less as contractors are anxious to get work. If this building was replaced, it would greatly improve the image of our city.

I have been in contact with several investors in the Rumford area who might be interested in buying this property. I believe that the location would be ideal, for example, as an assistant living building. A project such as this would bring in thousands of tax dollars over the next several years and thus keep our tax rate at the same level instead of annual increases.

If elected to the council, these issues would be one of my top priorities.”

Bay View Academy Sings For A Cure

East Providence, RI - The Bay View Academy choir sang for a cure on Wednesday, September 12th, recording the theme song for the Fourth Annual Gloria Gemma 5k. The song, Won’t Ever Quit, was written by Rhode Island singer/song writer Joanne Lurgio.

Joanne teamed up with singers from Bay View Academy Bishop Hendricken High School and the Gloria Gemma foundation, to record the song at Reel to Real Recording Studio in Cranston, RI. The three choirs recorded separately, but their voices will be blended to join Joanne’s for the chorus: For our sisters, our mothers, our daughters, our lovers, For those we will never forget In the light of this love I don’t walk alone And for this, I won’t ever quit Lurgio says the recording session was a “magical experience.

The world is going to hear this song, and they’ll hear these beautiful voices.” She hopes to use the song as a bonus track on her next CD. Bay View Academy senior, Mariella O’Neill from East Providence, RI, was particularly touched by the experience of recording this song. Mariella noted that after having family members lose the fight to cancer, it was particularly poignant for her to meet with survivors at the recording studio, and to see their reaction to the Bay View Academy choir singing. Bay View’s choir was the first to

record and Mariella says that she enjoyed and watching Lurgio, as “she teared up listening to her dream become a reality.”

Christine Kavanagh, Bay View’s choir director and a cancer survivor herself, adds that “there is nothing in the world more emotional than music.” Kavanagh hopes that the song, Won’t Ever Quit, “will leave a positive mark on the world.”

According to Lynn Simon, Gloria Gemma’s 5k Coordinator, the long term goal is to create a video with Won’t Ever Quit set to pictures from the October 7th run/walk and put it on the Gloria Gemma YouTube channel. “The goal is to get it to go viral,” says Simon. “We want to get a million hits. And maybe, someday, we’ll get it on the radio!” She adds, “I cannot express my gratitude for the Bay View girls really embracing this. It brought tears to my eyes. I mean, it was one of the most inspirational things.”

Bay View Academy is hosting a week of breast cancer awareness activities and fundraisers from Monday October 1st-Friday October 5th and is currently holding sign-ups for its group, Paws for a Cause, to walk in the Gloria Gemma 5k on October 7th.

Chefs Collaborative Rhode Island Farm Picnic 2012

An Autumn Harvest with Rhode Island’s Best Farm-to-Fork Chefs On Sunday, October 14, from 4 - 7 p.m., Chefs Collaborative, a non-profit organization that works with chefs and the greater food community to celebrate local foods and foster a more sustainable food supply, is collaborating with some of Rhode Island’s best “farm-tofork” chefs to promote awareness of local and sustainable ingredients available in the Ocean State. The event Co-Chairs, Chefs Derek Wagner of Nick’s on Broadway in Providence and Jake Rojas of Tallulah on Thames in Newport are teaming up with Chefs Matthew Gennuso of Chez Pascal, Mike McHugh of Julian’s, David Reynoso of Al Forno, Darius Salko of Tini, Matthew Varga of Gracie’s and Beau Vestal of New Rivers—all in Providence, and Eli Dunn of The Beehive Café in Bristol to create a locally sourced, home-style barbecuethemed menu. Wine will be provided by local vintners Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth and Jonathan Edwards Winery in North Stonington, Connecticut. Local breweries Grey Sail Brewing Company of Westerly and Revival Brewing Co. will be offering beer selections. An Autumn Harvest will celebrate local and sustainable food at Schartner Farms in Exeter, Rhode Island. The fundraiser is to support Chefs Collaborative and to support the Rhode Island Chefs Collaborative Local, a group of chefs that network together to represent the state in culinary competitions, dinners and fundraisers, promoting Rhode Island as a “farm-to-fork” culinary destination.
