Rehoboth Food Pantry Needs Help with Holiday Drive
By Laura Calverley Rehoboth Helping Hands Food Pantry has started its holiday fundraising drive and once again the poor economy and high unemployment rate has created a huge need for assistance among local families this year. Helping Hands Coordinator Steve Martin says the number of people needing help is on the rise. “Our numbers are increasing all the time. I know we’ll have more families this year,” Martin said. Helping Hands served about 7 families during the holidays last year and Martin says, “we’re going to be way above that this year.” Martin says that the demand for food assistance is high throughout the country. He says that national statistics show that 1 out of every 7 people need food and that figure is up from 1 out of 8. The holiday season is usually a time when food pantries get a lot of donations, but the economy is causing people to cut back everywhere, even on their donations to charities. “I think everybody’s feeling the pinch. That makes it difficult,” Martin said. Helping Hands’ clothes and food drive started on October 1 and runs through November 19. They are seeking donations of any type of holiday food, except for canned vegetables. The pantry needs meat, instant potatoes, rice, canned fruit such as cranberry sauce, soups, gravy, desert, etc. Also, any type of paper products and toiletries are always appreciated. continued on page 4
