Seekonk Election Season Begins
by Laura Calverley Election season has begun. Seekonk’s town election is April 2 and several candidates have taken out papers for twelve available seats. The race for selectmen may be a five-way contest for two seats. Selectmen Chairman David Parker is running for a second term. Selectmen John Whelan has decided not to run again. Four other residents have taken out papers to run for selectman. They are: Robert Blanchard, Gary Sagar, David Viera and Nelson Almeida. Blanchard, a member of the Capital Improvement Committee, is a newcomer to elected office. He says he thinks it’s time for new faces on the board. Blanchard is a partner in a software development company. Sagar is a retired Fire Captain for the city of Attleboro and served as a Seekonk Call Firefighter for 8 years. He is a local contractor and business owner. Sagar has also served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for 12 years, six as Vice Chairman. He said he believes it is an “opportune time to run.” Viera is the town’s former Fire Chief as well as a former selectman. He is a member of the town’s 200th Anniversary Planning Committee. Viera has been involved in the American Legion for nearly 40 years, including Vice Commander of Bristol County. Viera and Almeida could not be reached before press time, but more information on candidates will be reported in the March issue of The Reporter. continued on page 4...
