By Bob Rodericks In a scene more reserved for a football Thanksgiving Day rally, East Providence High School Principal Janet Sheehan, had called all eleventh graders to the auditorium for an assembly recently last month. “Congratulations”, Principal Sheehan told the junior class. “East Providence was one of only three high schools in the state of Rhode Island to make significant improvement in both reading and math in the New England Common Assessments Program or NECAP”. Math scores went up an astounding 86 percent and 6 percent of East Providence High School juniors are reading at or above proficiency level. The students applauded her praise. In a letter to parents and students posted on the high school web site, Sheehan said in part, “I am so proud of our high school and the recent news concerning our scores. We have been recognized as one of three high schools in Rhode Island to show significant statistical growth in Reading and Math on the 010 NECAP scores…” Sheehan continued to write that, “Our scores and classification are indicators of our students’ hard work and their knowledge of how important this test is to the school and to them personally. The test is currently the only indicator to show school wide achievement of the grade span expectations compared to other high schools in the state. The junior class rose to the occasion and worked diligently during the testing process.” Continued on page 4
