Seekonk Baseball off to Hot Start under Leadership of Senior Captains

By Jim Chandley Last year, the Warrior baseball team lost two major pieces to graduation. Not only did they lose captains in Andrew Killian and Sean Heaney, they lost their starting shortstop and catcher; two great positions to have leaders at, but tough to lose leaders from. This year a trio of seniors is filling the void. Starting first baseman Jake Silva, starting pitcher Branden George, and pitcher and utility man Sean Corry have taken the reigns as captains, and the team is off to a 6-3 start. Ripping off six wins to start the season, the team was feeling great. “Run production throughout the whole lineup. It’s great to have such an offensive explosion so early in the season,” says Silva. He adds that this kind of hitting gives everyone the confidence to remain successful offensively throughout the year. Seekonk has a team batting average of .316 this year and is scoring nine runs per game. The offensive onslaught led Seekonk to win their first six games out of the gate. But then came familiar foes Apponequet and Dighton-Rehoboth, and some tough losses. Seekonk left six men on base in a 6-4 loss at home to Apponequet, the team that bounced them from the playoffs last season. “I felt like that game was the first time that we really didn’t play well all around,” said Silva. “It was definitely a game we were looking to bounce back from,” he added. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they didn’t bounce back against bitter rival D-R. They lost 12-2 in the only game all season where they were not close. “That game was our biggest disappointment. Our hitting has kind of cooled down,” said Corry after the loss. continued on page 6...
