It’s Planting Season at Rehoboth Community Gardens
By Laura Calverley Planting season has begun at two community gardens in Rehoboth. The Rehoboth Community Garden, located next to the Council on Aging on Bay State Road, is starting its fourth season. The Rehoboth Community Children’s Garden, now in its third year, is located at 340 Anawan Street/Route 118 behind Fitness Mom Studio, next to the police and fire station. Both gardens grow fresh vegetables and fruit for the Helping Hands food pantry. Everything is grown organically at the gardens. Steve Martin of Helping Hands says that they really appreciate the fresh produce because the only way the pantry gets fresh vegetables and fruits is from community gardens or when residents drop off extra from their home gardens. The Community Gardens are both in need of volunteers and donations to help them in their efforts. Below is some background on the gardens, with information on planting days and items they are in need of.
Rehoboth Community Garden
The Rehoboth Community Garden next to the Council on Aging has two plots with nearly half an acre of growing space. Lisa Reigel, Bob Munroe and Don Maguire run the garden. Last year the garden was very productive. Reigel doesn’t have the exact numbers, but she says they grew hundreds of pounds of tomatoes and over 650 pounds of watermelon. This year they have already planted tomatoes, broccoli, six different kinds of melons and three kinds of cucumbers. Peppers, carrots and beans are going in next as well as something new this year - Brussel sprouts. continued on page 4...
