Town Meeting Voted Yes, Now It’s Your Turn To Vote Yes To A New Town Hall
On May 21st at our Annual Town meeting, the voters overwhelming supported the article to fund a new town hall. On June 26th you will have the opportunity to cast your vote. There will be one or two public hearings prior to the ballot vote so that you will have an opportunity to ask your questions. Here’s a question, do we need a New Town Hall? Our current building was built in the 50’s and was acquired by the town through the state in the 70’s. It does not meet the needs of the town. It does not have enough room to have all town departments under one roof. It does not have a good heating and cooling system, which result in higher utility costs. There are many repairs that are needed, window sills are rotting, ceiling tiles are broken and missing, floor tiles are in need of repair. This past weekend, the computer room also known as a closet was close to 90 degrees. The window air conditioner failed. While an air conditioner may
relieve some of the heat, it does not properly control moisture in an environment such as a computer room in order to maintain our computer equipment. The current town hall does not have adequate storage or storage for our important records, our history (dating back to the 1700’s) which are in jeopardy without adequate storage and climate controlled. The answer to the question, YES we need a New Town Hall. How much will this cost? The Board of Selectman was approached this past fall by a business owner who was looking to sell his building. Since he knew the town needed a new town hall, and his building in centrally located…next to the public safety building, it made sense to notify the board of his intention. The selling price is 1.2 million. The building has been appraised and it came in very close to the selling price. The building is well built, well maintained, has a public water supply, working septic and in continued on page 6...
