Seekonk Town Meeting Approves $42 Million Budget By Laura Calverley
Voters at the special town meeting on June 16 approved a budget of $42 million for Fiscal Year 2011. That is an increase of almost 4 percent over the current year’s budget. At the May 24 town meeting, residents voted to postpone the budget discussion until June to give the town more time to get more accurate numbers on local aid from the state. The meeting moved quickly and lasted about an hour. Town officials said the budget process had been “very challenging for everyone.” Finance committee chairwoman Kim Leinson told residents that local aid to the
town was cut by $ 2,76 , or 4.33 percent. She also said that new growth is being reduced by more than 64 percent, or $269, 34 compared to last year. “In order to remain within the statutory limits of Proposition 2 ½, the town cut $76,733 from its preliminary budget,” Leinson said. Town administrator Michael Carroll said that Seekonk was better off than many other towns that will have to lay off many employees next year. “The town has taken prudent actions and looked ahead on different things,” Carroll said. continued on page 4
