East Providence – Calls to local residents in March for the eighteenth annual Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon were successful in raising funds for Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation (CSF) of East Providence. The first $40,000 received was matched by the Carter Family Charitable Trust. The total amount of $83,148 received to date will be awarded as scholarships in June to East Providence students. New scholarships were established through the phone-a-thon, including the following: the King Family, Leonard Cipolla and the Stephen Martin Family Scholarships. New book awards include those named for Frank Vollaro, James and Kathleen Lynch, John Rizzini Family, Judith Vargas, Kollett Family, Meredith Watson, Nelia and Joseph Silva, P. Christopher Ellis, Morse Family, Tripp Family, William and Patricia Lambert, William and Norma Conley and Paul Lasnier Family. Teachers and students from East Providence schools volunteered at the phone-athon. Past recipients of scholarships from Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of East Providence and their parents joined in making calls to fellow classmates, as did board members of CSF of East Providence. Phone-a-thon Chairman Louise Paiva thanked local residents for their generosity. The local volunteer scholarship organization has conducted a phone-a-thon each spring since 1995. The amount of scholarships that has been awarded from phone-a-thon contributions totals more than half a million dollars. “We applaud East Providence residents for their continuing support of higher education for East Providence students,” she said. “We appreciate the continuing support of Nordson EFD, an East Providence company,” she added. The phone-a-thon is held at their Catamore Boulevard facility and the company provides phone access, postage and refreshments for volunteers.
