A Pasta Dinner will be held on Friday, August 10th at 6 PM at the American Legion in Riverside. The funds raised will be divided between the 2nd & 3rd floor families.

The 2nd floor victims are a family of 4 with 2 girls ages 7 & 5. The 3rd floor victims are a family of 4 with 2 boys ages 5 & 1. They have lost everything and this fundraiser is to help them begin to put their lives back together and create new memories. East Providence News Briefs Municipal Services Task Force Report

City Manager Peter Graczykowski, the Shared Municipal Services Task Force representative for East Providence, reported an opportunity for the “distressed” cities of East Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls to find some shared savings in recycling. By changing to an every-other week pickup schedule, East Providence can reduce its costs. Additional savings could come in consolidating the purchasing departments of the three cities.

The next meeting of the Shared Municipal Services Task Force is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. at Central Falls City Hall.

Life Support Rescue Vehicles Could Be Replaced

East Providence Fire Chief Joseph Klucznik, City Manager, Peter Graczykowski and Finance Director John Cimino will submit a Request for Proposal (RFP) to replace three of the department’s oldest Advanced Life Support Rescue vehicles.

The vehicles will cost approximately $250,000 each. With the help of federal grants the rescue vehicles should cost the city only about 10 percent of the total expense ($25,000 each). Chief Klucznik hopes to have the vehicles delivered to the department by this time next year.

Committee Appointed To Find New School Superintendent

The East Providence Budget Commission passed a resolution granting a sub-committee the authority to find and appoint an interim school superintendent to replace departing East Providence superintendent, Edward Daft. Mr. Daft is leaving his position in E. P. for a job in Barrington as the assistant high school principal.

The appointment committee will consist of Diane Brennan, the Budget Commission chairman, Charlie Tsonos, School Committee chairman, and a designee from the Rhode Island Department of Education. John Pini, Executive Director of the Rhode Island School Superintendents’

Association, has suggested a list of suitable candidates. Mr. Daft’s last official day on the job is scheduled to be Aug. 2.

Rumford Farmers’ Market

Golf Team Survives Thanks To Townie Support

With the inspirational help of Townies’ head coach Bill McEnery, the East Providence High School golf team will continue as a team in the spring.

Mr. McEnery and others, worked to raise the minimum amount of cash needed for East Providence to field a team in time for the 2013 season. Local businessman and golf enthusiast Michael Huber, owner of QML Inc. located on Ferris Avenue in the Rumford, made a very significant donation of $5,000.

Mr. Huber’s generous donation brought the total amount raised by Mr. McEnery's group to $6,300. Four other benefactors donated the remaining $1,300. McEnery goal is to raise $10,000.

This should be enough to give the team at least three more years to play. Mr. McEnery is not going to take a salary for next year.

This group of supporters will hold the first-ever “Townie Cup” Inter-club Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Firefly Golf Course in Seekonk. The cost of entry is $100, which includes greens fees, cart and lunch at the Johnson & Wales Inn. Those interested in attending can call Mr.

McEnery at 401-438-1959 or 401-3020249. Donations to the golf program can be made by sending checks made payable to Bill McEnery at 160 Ferris Ave., Rumford, R.I. 02916.

Golf is just one of the many sports casualties in the school budget this year.

Project 106 and East Providence Middle School Athletics Boosters Club are currently working to raise funds and bring sports back at Riverside and Martin Middle Schools. A proposal to cut the salaries of high school coaches has been suggested but nothing has been formally negotiated at this time.

Help Determine Our Future

I am writing this letter to all the people who can and should vote in the upcoming election for Senate District 14. Those that can should vote for Senator Daniel DaPonte and I intend to list some very good reasons why we should all go the polls on Primary day and vote. This is going to be very important four East Providence as well as for the State of Rhode Islands future.

We, in the City of East Providence have been truly lucky to have two of the most important people at the State House from our City. They are Senator Daniel DaPonte and Representative Helio Melo. They have had to make some very hard decisions in order to save our State from going bankrupt. Was it easy? No. Was it hard? Yes. Did they do right by the State and City we live in and for we, the taxpayers? Yes. Have they tried to protect our future as a State? Absolutely! When you become an adult and live in the adult world, you sometimes have to make very tough decisions. Who ever said that ‘doing the right thing would always be fun and easy? Children get to do the fun things, but responsible adults have to do the right things that are sometime very hard and unpleasant. That why they’re adults and not kids anymore. Adults, responsible adults not kids telling us what we want to head or what we wish were true but in reality, in the light of day, are not true.

This State has had to pull itself up by its boot straps and hard decision had to be made that would insure our financial security into the future. We could not afford to maintain the status quo that had been going on for way too many years. We needed leaders who could in fact; make those hard, tough, responsible decisions that in fact it was those hard, tough decisions that have given us our future back.

I wish I could drive a Range Rover, but I don’t because I can’t afford to drive a Range Rover. I drive what I can afford. Well, this State could not afford to continue to maintain the unsustainable previous pensions. The adult, hard decisions have to be made so that all of the people in the State Pension system, current and future participants, would actually have a pension check in the future. We need to spend what we can afford and not tax our residents, and our children, into the poor house!

Was it easy? NO. Was it popular? NO. Was it the right, responsible, adult thing to do for the good of all? Absolutely!

“All that glitters is not gold’. That’s been true for many centuries and is still true today.

If you listen to Senator DaPonte’s opponent, he will promise you the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But, will he be able to deliver? No! And please check to see just who will be getting their “Pot of Gold”. I promise you it won’t be you or I, or for that matter Senator DaPonte either! He is self employed and works in the private sector so there will be no pot of gold for him and he will not receive a municipal pension or a State pension. so, follow the money and make the right choice on primary day and election day. Cast your important vote for Senator DaPonte, a resident of the City of East Providence, Keep him in the Senate where he will continue to represent all of the people in the City of East Providence and the State of Rhode Island. We have someone who is willing to make the unpopular, tough and hard decisions, but at the end of the day, he will make the right decisions for all of us and not just for a select few.

School sports in East Providence is engrained in our community and as much about being a Townie as the Crescent Park Carousel, the much publicized Sabin’s Point Bonfire or any other East Providence tradition, many of which we losing one by one.

That’s why it strikes at the heart to see athletic programs under the hatchet, whether its middle school sports, freshman programs at the high school or whole teams such as golf.

Those who know me know that I’m not an athlete. In school, my pursuits related to technology, competitive speaking and debating, student government and similar activities. I was often disappointed that in a school, those more academic programs got little notice and support compared to sports. So you may wonder why I’ve

August 2012 The Reporter been so outspoken about sports lately.

While I am not an athlete, I have learned the importance that these programs have on the children that are involved with them.

My great uncle and godfather was Alfred ‘Big Al’ Santie, many in East Providence, particularly in the Riverside area know him for his work with youth sports, including little league, pop warner football (former Riverside Raiders) and CYO basketball.

While he didn’t coach interscholastic sports, he mentored these same young adults from the time he met them as young kids in pop warner to the time they were high school football captains and into adulthood. I didn’t always understand it at the time, and I was sometimes frustrated that I seemingly had so little in common with him, but I realize now the extent of the difference he made in the lives of generations of Riverside kids. So when a high school friend of mine explained to me both the condition of the middle school sport programs currently and the (at the time) proposed cuts that B&E had recommended to cut the program entirely, I felt the need to step up. We won the fight at the School Committee, however the Budget Commission sent in by the state, reversed that decision and removed middle school sports from the budget.

and community meetings. However, once statements were made by certain politicians, obfuscating the issue of whether sports were cut or not, we lost a lot of community momentum, despite the fact that it was eliminated from all the budgetary documents released by the Budget Commission.

Existing athletics organizations were not equipped to step up to raise the $106,000 needed to maintain middle school sports, due to their legal and tax setups. It became clear that this unparalleled challenge required a new group setup to meet this unprecedented need. While certain individuals embarked on their own organization, others embarked on another group, called the East Providence Middle Schools Athletics Booster Club (EPMSABC). both are still fledgling and neither is in position at this time to pay for the fall season right around the corner, which will cost approximately $35,000.

While I don’t sit on their board, I have worked with the directors on setting up the Booster Club and understand what they are trying to accomplish, not just saving sports in the short term, but also raising the quality of the program, a monumental undertaking, but I have confidence that Townies can achieve it.

I also encourage all townies that care about these programs to contact new Budget Commission Chair Diane Brennan and let her know that sports funding should be restored, at-least in-part. August 2012 The Reporter danger. It was estimated that Providence responded to 16,000 non-emergency runs in 2011 within their city limits. East Providence responded to approximately 400 EMS non-emergency assistance calls in the Capital City that same year. The actual number of nonemergency calls is still being calculated. If such calls are costly and dangerous within our own individual cities, my take is that the safety factor and cost factor only increases when responding to another city. We have serious financial problems right here in East Providence and our EMS response time to our own citizens is of upmost importance and should be our top priority.

Rogers Supports Project 106 Efforts to Save Middle School Sports

Mayor Bruce Rogers is advocating for the funding for this year’s fall Middle School Sports Programs to be placed back in the budget.

He is also requesting for the Budget Commission to include the funding in next year’s budget. Going forward with savings and cuts, the Council should look at any and all options to continue to fund the programs, utilizing savings and in conjunction with any private funding support through groups such as Project 106.

Project 106 is a grass-roots movement consisting of members of the community who believe in Middle School Sports Programs for our children. The organization’s members have started a foundation and are rallying everyone in the community to get behind the program to help our City insure sports programs for both our Middle Schools for years to come.

The cost to reinstate the Middle School Sports programs for the last two months of FY12 (September and October) is in the range of $33,000 at this time. The Budget Commission is actively in negotiations with our Teacher’s Union to see if this cost can be brought down. With their help and some creative work on the part of the District’s Athletics’ Director, this is a real possibility. People are doing everything in their power to reverse this situation so that our children can participate in interscholastic sports.

“The vast majority of people I have spoken with are in favor of the Middle School Sports programs and much testimony has been given by students, parents, coaches and teachers. They stated that the physical, mental, educational and social skills gained by sports programs, positively affected their development for life,” continued Mayor Rogers, “I am in complete agreement with these facts. We need to find a way to reach a common ground between the cost of equipment and stipends versus private funding and municipal support.”

29th Annual EPHS Hall of Fame Induction

By Bob Rodericks The 29th annual East Providence High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 14th, 2012 at the Venus de Milo Restaurant in Swansea, Massachusetts. The event is open to the public and tickets are available at the high school main office and at Martin and Riverside Middle Schools.

Tickets are $40. and include a full dinner. Reception is at 12 noon and dinner at 1:00 p.m. Tickets can also be obtained from Don and Linda Carlson by calling 401-433-3693. Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Kenneth R. Walker, class of 1949, retired East Providence school administrator, Rhode Island College professor and current Chairman of the R.I. Parole Board will be Master of Ceremonies.

The Hall of Fame was created and initiated by former Superintendent of Schools, Myron J. Francis, Class of 1947, and was instituted in 1984 in conjunction with the East Providence High School Centennial Year Celebration. Francis was also 1947 EPHS class president. The Hall was designed to recognize distinguished TOWNIE graduates who have brought honor to themselves and to the high school.

The five 2012 inductees are: Raymond B. Studley, 1983; Debra Zepp, 1971; Angela Renaud, 1966; Edmund Anelundi, 1945; and David J Kelleher, honorary category.

Studley is a 23 year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police and a Lieutenant Colonel. He is also Deputy Superintendent and Chief of Field Operations and second in command overall. Studley has served in many capacities including being named interim police chief for East Providence in 2009. Studley is a 2011 graduate of the FBI National Academy. While in high school, Studley was a three sport athlete and received a student/athlete scholarship to attend URI. Debra Zepp was recently named Rhode Island Elementary school principal of the year in 2011. Zepp is principal at the Matunuck Elementary School in South Kingstown. Zepp was recognized for “her willingness to try new approaches and for her infectious enthusiasm”. Zepp has also been praised in education circles for her efforts to boost her school’s science writing abilities and for her style of “reaching out to parents, the community, students and teachers.” Zepp was further recognized for improving her school’s culture by her “personal touch, which includes writing notes on each child’s report card and her daily greeting of student’s by name every morning.”

Angela Renaud a post- secondary accreditation evaluator for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Renaud is also Dean of the John Hazen White School of arts and sciences and a full professor. She has worked as an educational consultant and a reading coordinator for the Diocese of Providence. Renaud has also been a reading specialist for the Swansea School Department and taught English in East Providence for two years in the seventies. She was named Outstanding Woman of the Year by Johnson & Wales University in 1991 and has been a speaker at several national conferences. Renaud has been a volunteer board member for several charitable organizations.

August 2012 The Reporter Edmund Anelundi was an all-state basketball player and lettered in track and field at EPHS and was named all-state. He continued to excel in athletics at the University of Rhode Island. After a stint in the US Navy, Anelundi played semi-professional basketball. He then went on to a 20 year career with the East Providence Fire Department. Anelundi became an expert tennis player and instructor. He was tennis pro at Ledgemont Country Club and was also head tennis coach for Barrington High School. His teams there won two state championships and many division titles.

He continues to coach today at 77 years of age.

David J. Kelleher was a three year honors student at Our Lady of Providence Seminary. While in high school he participated in three sports and was an active volunteer helping out at area hospitals. Kelleher has served East Providence as a teacher, principal, local historian and preservationist, and a member of several civic groups and a role model for many young people. He first taught school in Attleboro and came to East Providence in 1968. Kelleher was named principal at several East Providence elementary schools. A published author, Kelleher wrote “An Illustrated Tour of East Providence”. He has been a leader in the East Providence Historical Society since 1985 and has been a founding member of the ‘Friends of Pomham Lighthouse’ committee which has worked to restore that historic landmark. Kelleher is an active volunteer in several key East Providence social and educational organizations and a respected educator.

The Hall of Fame Committee invites all to help honor these 2012 inductees by attending this year’s ceremony. Any EPHS graduate is welcomed to join the Hall of Fame Committee. Anyone can nominate someone for Hall of Fame consideration.

East Providence Town News Long Lost Journal Found

The City Clerk’s Office received wonderful news this week regarding the return of a long lost original Council Journal from the years 1896-1898. This journal was the only missing book containing Council minutes from the City’s historic documents.

On Tuesday, July 25th, the East Providence City Clerk received a phone call from Paul Campbell, City of Providence, Division of Archives and History. Mr. Campbell informed the Clerk that the book was discovered in a second floor storage area of the Providence archives. Apparently, on May 29, 1986, the book was sent to the City of Providence from David W. Carmichael the Westchester County, New York Archivist who wasn’t sure why he had the book but was returning it. It’s possible that he thought East Providence was a section of Providence. Once the book arrived in Providence it for some unknown reason was never forwarded to East Providence.

“We can’t be sure how long the book was missing prior to 1986, if it had been sent out to be rebound, as the years prior and following 1896 had all been rebound, then perhaps this book was lost in the shuffle or its possible someone doing research inadvertently walked off with the journal. However, we are thrilled to have it back as it completes our set of Council Journals and we are so grateful to Mr. Campbell for returning it home,” said City Clerk Kim Casci.

A Council Journal contains the minutes from Council meetings held in the years listed on the binder. The journals from the 1800’s are all hand written and contain original records and in some cases the only original record in existence of those meetings.

The Clerk’s office plans to send the journal out to be rebound as the other journals in the series have been.

St Vincent DePaul Ministries at St. Brendan Church – Giving Tree Wins East Bay Community Action Program’s 2012 Vision Award for its Generosity to Head Start Children

East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) presented a 2012 Vision Award to Riverside’s St Vincent DePaul Ministries at St. Brendan Church – Giving Tree at its Ninth Annual Seaside Gala held Thursday, June 14 at Castle Hill Inn and Resort in Newport.

Ann Mitchell and Mary Lu Medeiros accepted the award. For 18 years, over a thousand East Providence children have benefited from the parishioners at the church through The Giving Tree Program sponsored by the St. Vincent DePaul Ministries. Children in all nine Head Start East Providence classrooms and one home based room receive toys and clothing during the holidays through this program. For some of these children, the presents are the only ones they receive at holiday time. Last year over 155 children received gifts through the program. The St. Vincent DePaul Ministries is an international organization dedicated to helping people in need. Mitchell ran the Giving Tree Program for 15 years and it is now run by Medeiros.

Words like "bankruptcy", "receivership" , and "state takeover" have become a part of our every-day life. Fears of school closings, program cuts, and massive property tax increases have become part of family dinner time conversations.

City of East Providence Keeps A Promise To Bradley Hospital

East Providence, July 11, 2012: In the footsteps of the recent positive bond rating actions, the City of East Providence has reached another important milestone in its financial turnaround.

“I am glad to report that today the City made its final payment of $4.3 million to Bradley Hospital to eliminate the accumulated debt to this vendor,” said East Providence City Manager and Budget Commission member Peter Graczykowski. Bradley Hospital, a Lifespan partner, is a major provider of special education services to the East Providence School District.

August 2012 “I am pleased that, working with the Budget Commission, the City has resolved this situation without interrupting important services on which East Providence families depend,” Governor Lincoln Chafee said. “Early in its tenure, the East Providence Budget Commission set out to meet all of the City’s financial obligations in an expedient manner, while working closely with all affected vendors,” said State of Rhode Island Director of Revenue Rosemary Booth Gallogly, “and today’s payment is the proof of the Commission’s success in a relatively short period of time, under the able leadership of the outgoing Chairman Michael O’Keefe.”

Previously overdue payments to this vendor made up the bulk of the accumulated Schools deficit of over $7 million, which is now being addressed as part of the 5-year balanced budget plan.

“The Commission as well as municipal employees have worked hard to make structural changes to the City and Schools budgets to identify funds for this important debt elimination payment,” added East Providence Mayor and Budget Commission member Bruce Rogers. “Bradley Hospital values its partnership with the City and appreciates the efforts of the Budget Commission to deliver on its commitment to address our outstanding and ongoing invoices,” stated Bradley Hospital’s President and CEO Daniel Wall, “Bradley and the City worked collaboratively to continue this cost effective program and avoided significant disruption to students and families while the City worked with the Commission to resolve the outstanding financial obligation.

East Providence Prevention Coalition Responsible Beverage Service Trainings Offered Locally

The East Providence Prevention Coalition (EPPC) has trained over 300 participants locally, in the 21 Proof Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) curriculum. 21 Proof is an evidence based, state approved Responsible Beverage Service Training for anyone who serves alcoholic beverages in a pouring establishment. All staff including wait staff, door personnel, valet staff and owners/mangers must be RBS Certified through a four-hour training, and recertified every three years, according to RI state law.

In an attempt to offer this training locally, the EPPC is hosting three RBS trainings in the next year at a nominal fee of $25 per participant. All trainings take place at East Providence City Hall, located at 145 Taunton Avenue, East Providence RI, in room 306 from 9:00am-1:00pm. Training dates are as follows: Wednesday September 12, 2012 Tuesday January 8, 2013 Wednesday April 24, 2013 During the 21 Proof RBS training, staff will learn identification checking, laws, assessing customer intoxication levels, skills for handling customers and refusing sales. Upon successful completion, staff will receive training manuals and required certification.

The EPPC is a citizens group dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles. The Coalition develops proactive strategies through collaboration with community partners in both the public and private sectors.

Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse

The Aecom Company, which installed a new sewer line under the East Bay Bike Path has also installed a number of informational signage’s. One of those signage’s is about the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse. It shows various pictures of the lighthouse through the years as well as information about its history.

Peer Wellness Coaches Are Coming to East Bay Center Inc. East Bay Center is excited to announce that through an initiative spearheaded by the RI Department of Behavioral Health and funded through the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors; specially trained Peer Wellness Coaches are coming to EBC. These individuals are uniquely qualified to assist clients through recovery because they have “walked the walk” and “talked the talk” themselves.

They are extraordinary individuals who have prevailed over their own illnesses and want to inspire others to the same successes.

Peer Wellness Coaches, or Peer Specialists, have gone through a rigorous training and certification process, and are now beginning internships at local community mental health centers, including EBC. Several interns will eventually be hired to work side-by-side with professional Case Managers, Nurses, Therapists, and Psychiatrists within the multidisciplinary treatment teams and provide a range of duties designed to facilitate the development of self-help skills, support systems, coping strategies, and increase the hope and esteem that is central to recovery from a psychiatric disability.

EBC has always embraced clients on its Board of Directors, service committees, and advocacy groups, but this is the first time that clients will be providing direct care services to other clients. Their immersion into the treatment setting will enhance EBC’s ability to orient clients who are new to mental health/addictions services navigate the system, assist individuals identify their personal interests and goals, recognize early triggers and signs of relapse, and facilitate community resources.

We look forward to providing this enhanced service to our clients, as well as providing the Peer Specialists themselves support of their own recovery through paid employment – a win/win for all involved!

EBC’s mission has remained the same for many years – to improve the lives of individuals and families within our communities by providing a broad range of high quality mental health and addiction services.

Chowder and Clam Cakes Fundraiser for East Providence’s Pomham Rocks Lighthouse

Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, a Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, a non profit organization, continue their work to preserve and restore the historic Pomham Rocks Lighthouse located 800 feet off the Riverside shore line.

An afternoon fundraiser featuring chowder and clam cakes is scheduled for Sunday, September 9 from 1:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. The event will be held at Pazi’s Place and Standard Hardware at 380 Taunton Avenue in East Providence. It is open to the public.

The former chef at Rocky Point Park will be preparing the chowder and clam cakes, along with other items on the menu at Pazi’s Place. Pamela Leite, owner of Pazi’s Place has generously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds to the restoration of the lighthouse.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – The Law Offices of William C. Maaia and Associates presented a scholarship award to Catherine Browning of Mayfair Drive in Rumford, Rhode Island. Catherine Browning a senior at East Providence High School, will enter the United States Military Academy at West Point in July. Attorney Maaia presented the Scholarship Award on June 11, 2012, at the High School’s Award’s Ceremony.

Catherine Browning, Valedictorian of the Class of 2012, graduated first in her class from East Providence in June. She is the daughter of Alan Browning and Eileen Palenchar. Catherine will accept an appointment to West Point reporting to the academy in July of 2012, with the hopes of going to medical school.

Maaia said she received the scholarship named in memory of his parents, “Charles and Ursula Maaia Memorial Scholarship” because Catherine represented not only a person of outstanding academic achievement but also those other equally important qualities held in high esteem by Maaia’s parents which include humility, kindness and persistence.

“Catherine Browning” said Maaia, “is not only an all around talented young woman but a fantastic individual as well.”

In addition to Catherine’s academic achievements, Catherine is the excellent athlete. Further, her talents include playing in the high school band and learning to play the guitar. Catherine walked away from the awards ceremony with a number of academic awards.

AYSO SOCCERFEST 2012!

AYSO holds 1st Annual Soccerfest, July 1st. Boys and girls from the U8, U10, U12, and U14 competitive teams played in a Soccerfest.

Teams were randomly selected for a fun game of soccer, complete with a soccer pirate. The Soccerfest format is set up to encourage friendships through the love of the game. All players received a tee shirt, a certificate of play, and lunch. It was a fun family day for all!

Little League A Summer Rite of Passage

By Bob Rodericks Little League baseball/softball is right up there with motherhood and apple pie. Despite Rhode Island’s distinction as one of the smaller states in the U.S., Little League Baseball has developed a strong presence in the Ocean State. For countless boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15, little league represents a rite of passage - a summertime of building memories and seemingly endless games that produce wide smiles on the faces of wouldbe future Red Sox or even Yankees. A onetime boys only theatre, little league now offers organized baseball and softball for girls as well. Little league has changed a lot, gone are the wooden bats and those wrap-around half helmets and in their place are shiny aluminum bats that don’t break and flashy full uniforms complete with batting gloves and grass infields. But all in all, little league remains the same. Many young players believe that they will one day play before 40,000 fans and be on national TV. Little do they know that 99% of players will not play organized ball beyond little league. In fact, Hall of Fame Red Soxer Car Yastrzemski, was the first Hall of Famer to have played little league baseball.

East Providence has three vibrant leagues - EP Central, Riverside and Rumford. Little league headquarters requires league districts to reflect the area census population. The heart of little league ball is the major division (10-12 yrs). There are over 60 chartered leagues in Rhode Island, and these leagues are organized into four districts. In all-star competition, the winners of the four district tournaments meet in a double-elimination state tournament that determines the Rhode Island champion. The tournament was originally a single-elimination event, but switched to a double-elimination format in 1985. The Rhode Island state champion advances to the New England Region Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut, where it competes against five other New England state champions for a berth in the Little League World Series. Six Rhode Island teams have participated in the Little League World Series, including Cumberland American Little League in 2011. Cranston Western Little League won the U.S. title in 1996, but no Rhode Island team has ever won the Little League World Series.

District 2 includes Barrington, Darlington American (Pawtucket) East Providence Central, Fairlawn(Pawtucket), King Philip,(Bristol), Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Newport Fifth Ward, Pineview, Portsmouth, Riverside, Rumford, Tiverton and Warren. While no East Providence little league all-star team has ever won a (major division) state championship, there have been many great teams.

“I think this is one of the first district champions the city has had,” EP Central Little League president Jason Perry said referring to his 9-10 year old team which after winning the District 2 championship this summer, recently lost the state title to Cumberland, RI. The 2012 E.P. Central 9-10 softball All-Stars were Hannah Ramer, Jaqueline Reynolds, Maia Angela Villarica, Paige Messier, Aaliyah Pattie, Hailey Martins, Alessandra Woods, Mariana Matteson, Saylor Costa, Mackenna Britto, Hailey Silveira, Rachel Bettencourt and Tabatha Vera. Joe Martins managed the team. Shane Messier, Tony Woods and others were coaches. “Thanks to all our coaches, volunteers and parents. These kids did a great job,” said Perry. As of this writing, little league play continues.

Five Ways To Help Kids Boost Their Brain Power

(ARA) - Everyone is born with about 100 billion brain cells. We form new connections between these cells throughout life, but the rate is particularly high when we're young. Since those connections facilitate thinking and learning, parents who want to help give their children an intellectual edge should consider the brain-healthy choices they make each day.

"Making the effort to nurture your child's brain with both proper nutrients and varied experiences, especially when they are young and developing at such a fast rate, is crucial," says speech pathologist Lauren Zimet, founder of Early Insights, LLC, and an expert on childhood brain development. "The connections in brain circuitry can be enhanced through the environments and activities a child is exposed to, and participates in, as well as the nutrients a child consumes."

Zimet offers five tips to help parents enhance healthy brain development in their children, positioning them for success in school today, and well into their future:

1. Select a rainbow

It's no secret that the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables are numerous, but thanks to the results of ongoing research, you can

Encourage your children to eat a colorful array of produce (organic when possible) each day so they get the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals needed to nourish and protect their growing brains. If your child is resistant to eating produce, encourage them to come shopping with you and select something new to try. Kids are more likely to eat what they have selected themselves.

2. Relax the right way

While it's true that exercise boosts brain power, it's also important to teach children how to relax. Balancing activity with relaxation is important so that kids don't get too stressed, which can impact the brain's development and lead to learning and behavior problems. Teaching children early on the benefit of setting goals, working towards those goals, and giving their brain and body time to relax are important life skills. When it's time to relax, skip the TV and teach your child that taking a walk in nature, reading a book or drawing are great ways to unwind. Deep breathing is also an excellent practice to teach children of all ages.

3. Eat omega-3 brain food

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are critical to a child's brain development. They are called "essential" because we need them for optimal health. The problem is that our bodies cannot manufacture them and we can only get them from the food we eat or supplements we take. While fish, nuts and seaweed are good omega-3 sources, kids typically don't gobble down these foods. That leaves many parents worried that their kids aren't getting enough, and with omega-3 deficits linked to ADHD, dyslexia and other behavioral and psychological disorders, many are turning to supplements for their children. Experts agree that the safest, most reliable source of the most important essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA) is a high quality fish oil supplement. "Giving your child's brain what it needs to grow strong can help him or her at school and in all social situations," adds Zimet.

"Utilizing these tips is a great way to help position your child for success in the coming school year, and beyond."

Much like the cafeteria, the quality of a bag lunch hinges on what's been chosen and eaten. To paraphrase Wansink, it's not nutrition until it's eaten.

One easy step to improve the quality of a bag lunch and the chance it will be enjoyed is to increase your kids' involvement in the process. Have them help shop for foods and talk to them about which food categories make a lunch that makes a difference. Then have them help bag it up.

Remember that drinks matter at lunchtime. Soda, fruit drinks, and popular energy drinks and sports drinks lack calcium and often contain added sugars. That's a problem. Up to 90 percent of a person's bone density is formed by age 18 and those school years are crucial for building bone strength to last a lifetime. Be sure to pack a calcium-rich drink.

New grains and new ways of making bread mean better whole grain bread choices are available for sandwiches. Breads can be soft and moist yet still deliver whole grain goodness plus, in some cases, enough nutrients to rival fruits and vegetables.

Food safety is a big concern for bag lunches. Perishable foods need to be eaten within two hours if they're left at room temperature and most brown bag lunches sit in a desk or locker for longer than that, turning them into bacteria havens and making them risky to eat. Home-packed meals need to be put in insulated, chilled bags that will keep foods in a safe temperature zone, sometimes for four or five hours. If your child isn't keen on carrying an insulated bag (many older kids aren't), or to reduce overall food safety risks, school lunches are an easy, nutritious fix.

Lunchtime is a highlight of many school days and an essential part of a productive one. Talk with your kids about what they eat and how lunch can help or hold them back from learning, running faster at recess or performing their best in after school activities. A healthful lunch will keep them fully fueled for the rest of their day.

Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist Helps Recognize RSVP Volunteers

Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist cited the importance of community support to education at a program honoring East Providence Reads volunteers at the A.B. Hennessey School in East Providence. The volunteers were from East Bay Community Action Program’s (EBCAP) Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

“Teachers change lives every day,” Gist said, “but they can’t do it without community involvement.” She added that “As volunteers you make magic happen, giving every day to make a difference in the lives of our students.”

Hennessey School Principal David Britto praised the East Providence Reads volunteers “for their work in touching the lives of our students.”

RSVP Director Audrey Field said the program “looks at ways to impact the communities we serve. Our volunteers come back year after year very much devoted to your children.”

Field noted that the program is funded through grants RSVP received, including a recent AmeriCorps grant which provided a coordinator to help obtain volunteers for the classrooms.

East Providence Interim School Superintendent Ed Daft also praised the volunteer effort, noting that “East Providence Reads has been helping our students since it was founded 20 years ago” and he recognized Pam Murray, who started the program.

EBCAP Chief Executive Officer Dennis Roy also thanked the volunteers for their service, noting that EBCAP has a long history of partnering with the East Providence Schools and how RSVP has been a valuable resource to many activities in the community.

Gist, who was presented with a Hennessey School T-shirt by students who have been involved in East Providence Reads, told the volunteers, “years later these students will remember the help you have given them and how special you are.” She added, “In Rhode Island we are shooting to have the best public schools in America and through East Providence Reads you have all shown how this can be accomplished.”

Five students in the program read essays they wrote about their participation, citing the volunteers who helped them. Commissioner Gist and individual school principals presented certificates to 19 volunteers who served in classrooms throughout the school district.

The volunteers and their volunteer stations are: Thomas Connor, Patricia Gemma, Jason Lavena, Merilda Bieberbach and Connie Dykeman who volunteered at Hennessey Elementary School; John Alexyon and Mary Grimaldi who volunteered at Kent Heights Elementary School and Joan Allen and Jane Long who volunteered at Waddington Elementary School.

JRD Oldham Elementary School Celebrate Arbor Day

The Beautification Commission hosted a tree planting ceremony to commemorate Arbor Day 2012 which was held at JRD Oldham Elementary School, located at Bullocks Point Avenue in Riverside, RI. The school was selected for this special event.

The tree planting ceremony followed school assembly, where invited dignitaries met the students, including students who presented art projects, recited poetry, sang, and read in their own words, writings about Arbor Day. This special event took place on Wednesday May 23, 2012 at 10:00AM. Invited dignitaries included School Committee members, City Council members and “Woodsy the Owl” was also in attendance.

Children of East Bay area clients of Tapin (Touch A Person In Need) continue to enjoy summer vacation, and their families continue to try to provide enough food for them. While protein items such as tuna, peanut butter, etc. are always needed, soups, cereals, snacks and juices are also requested by all of them.

While the children might not be looking forward to the end of summer and the return to school, the parents certainly will be, and will be trying to gather clothes including new underwear, socks, shoes etc. Donations of these as well as gently used backpacks and new school supplies would be greatly appreciated. Please be sure all clothes and shoes are clean and in good condition. The agency tries to provide clothing in sizes infant thru 14, but due to space constraints is only able to carry seasonally appropriate items.

Donors are asked to please hold on to their summer and winter clothes until they are in demand.

Furniture donations continue to be very low, and while upholstered items such as recliners, mattresses, sofas, etc. may not be stored at the facility they are still very much needed and may be connected with needy clients through the office. Small tables, chairs, desks, bureaus, shelves, etc. may be stored and disappear as quickly as they come in.

foreign or domestic policy in particular, but a call to public service. Kennedy inspired Americans to serve their communities and their country and clichĂŠ as that may sound in this day and age, I truly believe in public service and that is what has led me to run for a seat in the Rhode Island General Assembly.

I also believe that good public policy can improve the lives of Rhode Islanders and that it must be crafted in a deliberate and thoughtful manner that considers all stakeholders and all segments of our population. While I acknowledge, accept, and admire the role of the rugged individualist in American society, I know that we all do better when we have a collective mindset that ensures that we are looking out for our neighbor and not abandoning them in their time of need.

There is no doubt that there has been mismanagement, waste, and a lack of foresight in crafting some aspects of collective bargaining agreements at the local and state level, but the greatest burden on our distressed cities and towns is that the state has shifted far too much of the burden from the collective Rhode Island tax base to the taxpayers in cities and towns that can least afford it. Some of those cities and towns are literally being crushed under the weight of this shift and their property tax payers can no longer bear it.

August 2012 The Reporter Instead of crafting a fair broad based state tax system and a fairer school funding formula, we have fallen victim to a narrative that scapegoats public employees and ignores the perfect storm that has placed us in our current state. That’s not good policy, its demagoguery.

I am all for streamlining the business regulatory process and engaging in business friendly economic policy which must include serious infrastructure improvements and a focus on keeping the enormous talent pool that exists at our state’s colleges and universities, in our state. More importantly, we have to invest in our community college and create a curriculum that serves the needs of Rhode Island business. There are burgeoning programs all over the United States that bring together industry and community colleges in order to meet the labor needs of these businesses. This is the direction we must follow.

My daughter Tess is 13 and my daughter Megan is 10 and I want them to be able to stay in this beautiful state where their family has prospered for generations. In order for that to happen, good people have to step up and heed the calling to public service.

When I think of East Providence I think of the words of my hero the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy who stated upon losing the 1980 Democratic Presidential Nomination “For All Those Whose Cares Have Been Our Concern I Say to You, The Work Goes On, The Cause Endures, The Hope Still Lives, And the Dream Shall Never Die!” When I announced my candidacy for City Councilman of Ward II of the City of East Providence; I announced it with the full

intention of doing nothing more than to serve my fellow citizens of the City of East Providence. Over the course of the time of my campaign I began to notice a city not continuing on a downward spiral but rather on an upward climb towards full recovery of our economic woes; I also took notice that such recovery could only come from within our City Council and its distinguished leaders up to and including our esteemed Mayor Bruce Rogers who’s tireless work within our city government has proved that if one cares not about himself but rather his fellow citizens and devotes oneself to bettering the lives of those around him change can truly become possible.

“Science for Seniors”

With Ian Sabula, Monday, August 6th, Tuesday, 14th, and Monday, 20th - 10:30am. The class will consist of two activities.

First, powerpoint on the stars and constellations visible in August.

The next activity is to make bottle rockets, propelled by water and air. This will take two sessions, one for the construction and one for the launch. All materials for the workshops will be provided for the workshop. Please sign up in the Administration Office.

Rhode Island Relay presents Captioned Telephone

Tuesday, August 7th, 10:30am, Seminar Room. Do you or someone you know experience difficulty hearing over the telephone? If so, you are encouraged to learn more about an exciting phone and service that is available to you. An Outreach Coordinator will be here to talk about the benefits of Captioned Telephone (CapTel®), and how you can obtain a CapTel phone through the Rhode Island Adaptive Telephone Equipment Program (ATEL) and Rhode Island Relay. The CapTel® phone looks and works just like a traditional phone, with one important difference: it displays word-for-word captions of everything the other party says during a conversation.

Captions appear on a bright, built-in display screen directly on the phone so that users are able to listen while reading what’s being said. The 30 minute presentation consists of both a short video and a visual presentation. Questions and answers will follow.

Tuesday, August 14th 10:30am. Lincoln Heritage Life works with seniors on final expense and funeral planning. A unique aspect of our program is that, in addition to providing for final expense funding, we have partnered with the Funeral Consumer Guardian Society which provides complete funeral planning service to those who are making the final arrangements. This service is provided at no additional cost. Another important part of the program is we can provide coverage for many seniors who are unable to get coverage elsewhere.

I have been married for 8 years to my wonderful husband Tony, and am a mother of 2 beautiful girls Victoria Isabel (6) and Sophia Arielle (3). They will continue making appearances with me and helping with activities. They love spending time at the Center, and many of you have already received some interesting complimentary drawings to say the least! I am also a Nurse Manager for the Visiting Nurses

of Care New England and per diem Nursing Supervisor for Roger Williams Medical Center. As you noticed in the front lobby July 3, I conducted a brief survey to assess what you, the participants of the Senior Center, are looking for in regards to future activities pertaining to health and wellness.

We will be able to touch upon physical and emotional wellness throughout the coming weeks. However, what is wellness? The truth is wellness is a tough word to define.

Charles B. Corbin of Arizona State University gives this definition of wellness: “Wellness is a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of well-being.” Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. Process means that improvement is always possible Aware means that we are continuously seeking more information about how we can improve. Choices means that we consider a variety of options and select those in our best interest. Success is determined by each individual to be their collection of life accomplishments.

Tuesday-10:15 - 11:45. Come join our very enthusiastic Wii Bowling Group every Tuesday. Using our large screen TV our participants have a great time bowling. If you have never tried this the group will teach you and you’re sure to pick it up quickly.

Monday, August 27th - 2pm to 4pm.

On the last Monday of every month, two students from MTTI career training school will assist any member with computer questions. These volunteers will try to resolve your computer problems, and help you with a computer course you may be taking. The students will be in the computer lab.

Blood Pressure Clinics

Atria Bay Spring Village - Friday, August 3rd; Waterview Villa - Wednesday, August 8th; Evergreen House Health Center - Thursday, August 16th; Hattie Ide Chaffee - Tuesday, August 28th. All clinic’s are held from 10:30am—11:30am. We have Registered Dieticians available for appointments in the health office. They will counsel you, in private, about your personal needs and

insurance covers these visits. They are also certified diabetes educators. To schedule a visit, stop by the health office or call us at 435-7870.

Each Thursday from 11am until 12 noon Eleanor Leighton RN is providing Therapeutic Touch services to our members for the nominal fee of $2.00. This is a well researched technique for pain and stress reduction. Please contact the Health Office at 435-7870 to set up a 15 minute session.

East Side Clinical Lab draws blood work here once per month. The date for this month is: Wednesday August 1, 8:30-11:30.

There is no pre-registration, just come in with the lab slip from your doctor. Please utilize this service so they will continue.

Michael Friend LICSW from East Bay Center is assisting our seniors with their social service needs every other Tuesday.

Diabetes Support 1:30pm - 3:00pm Open meeting held bi-monthly for people with diabetes to meet for mutual support.

The group meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Caregiver’s Support10:30am - 11:30am - This support group is held the fourth Monday each month. The sessions offer support and sharing with others who are caring for loved ones.

Stroke Club 1:30pm - 3:00pm - The Stroke Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month and provides entertainment, education, support, socialization, refreshments, and transportation for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

In-Sight Support 12:45pm - 3:00pm - In-Sight offers programs and support in productive living for the vision impaired. The group meets the 3rd Friday of every month.

Senior Center Library

The library is a very warm and lovely place for people to choose a good book and read in a nice quiet area. We continue to receive many donations of new and current books. These donations have truly enhanced the quantity of our library. We also have current magazines for your enjoyment.

The book club meets on Monday afternoons. New club members are welcome.

Elder Information Specialist: Our Elder Information Specialist assists the elderly and their families in providing information /referral and assistance with accessing services and programs.

Nutrition Program: The center provides a nutritional meal to approximately 125 seniors per day. The Cranston Senior Center provides the meals.

Case Management / Senior Services: The center coordinates with East Bay Community Action Program Inc., for all casework and follow-ups. Protective Services Council, made up of city departments and mental health/social service agencies, meets monthly to discuss problems concerning the elderly.

Transportation: The center has two buses that are used daily for door-to-door transportation to and from the center.

Notary: This service is available in the Administration Office at no charge.

Seminars: Monthly social, educational, and financial seminars on topics relating to seniors.

Manicurist: A manicurist visits the center weekly for manicures and polish changes.

Gift Shop: The gift shop has many different items for the convenience of the seniors. Small items from candy and greeting cards to jewelry, handmade items and crafts are available.

Beginners Yoga - Mondays 10:30am $3 Ballroom Dance - Monday 2pm $3 Relearn all the old moves on the ballroom dance floor as well as some new ones. Singles are welcome.

Aerobics - Tues & Thurs 9:30am $2 Instructor Karen Boyd gives members a great cardiovascular workout. Hand and ankle weights are used to tone and build your muscles.

August and with it comes all the beauties of the garden. All of the hard work is starting to payoff with fresh garden treats. One of the best of these treats is the beautiful Tomato.

My Mother’s Tomato Salad is the kind of dish that Alice Waters (the pioneer of the seasonal-regional style of cooking) would have loved. It didn’t take me long to realize why tomatoes throughout the rest of the year just were not the same. Not in taste or texture.

The tomato is another wonderful gift of the Mayans. The fruity vegetable has grabbed the attention of millions health seekers for its incredible phyto-chemical properties. Interestingly, it has much more health benefiting qualities than that in an apple!

Eating tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste-topped pizza more than two times a week can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 21 to 43 percent according to Dr. Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard University School of Public Health. “The only nutrient that turned out to have significant preventative value (against prostate cancer) was lycopene,” writes Dr. Giovannucci who also found that lycopene was most efficiently absorbed into the body when accompanied by dietary fats (limpids). “Cooking tomatoes in oil encourages intestinal absorption and results in a two-to-threefold rise in plasma lycopene concentrations,” said Dr. Giovannucci. “Tomato sauce is one of the best lycopene sources.”

Many hundreds of cultivar varieties with different type and size, either organic, hybrid are being in use. Most cultivates produce red fruit; but a number of cultivates with yellow, orange, pink, purple, green, or white colors are also available.

Heirloom tomatoes are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among organic producers. Heirloom varieties tend to produce more natural and flavorful fruits.

There are many foods that pair with Tomatoes but the only thing that is necessary on a perfectly ripe tomato is a little bit of salt.

I’m going to share with you two very simple recipes one is the very basic tomato sandwich. This is the basic what you add to it is up to you. The other is My Mother’s Tomato Salad, simple, fresh easy.

I also what to address the practice of “seeding” a tomato, I don’t understand it or the purpose of it. Don’t do it. The gelatinous center of a tomato is a beautiful added sweet treat.

My Mother’s Tomato Salad (4 servings)

4 Perfectly Ripe August Tomatoes (use 1 per person); 1 Red onion, thinly sliced; Celery heart, inner stalks with leaves; Salt and Pepper; Extra Virgin Olive Oil; Red wine vinegar; Crumbled blue cheese or gorgonzola (optional) Combine in a medium size Salad Bowl, tomatoes sliced into wedges, thinly sliced onion, and chop celery stalks with leaves, as my Mother always said “be sure to use the tender inner stalks and leaves, it compliments the tomatoes” she was right. Salt and pepper to taste.

In a small bowl add one part red wine vinegar to two parts olive oil. That’s about ¼ cup of vinegar to ½ cup of olive oil. Mix with fork and top salad.

Sprinkle crumbled cheese if using and serve with good hard crust Italian bread… dunk the bread!

THE BASIC TOMATO SANDWICH

2 slices of Artesian Bread, toasted; One tablespoon of a good mustard, Dijon or Spicy Deli; Extra Virgin Olive Oil; Salt and Pepper; 1 perfectly ripe August Tomato This first step is optional, but I suggest you try it, peel the tomato. A perfectly ripe or even slightly over ripe tomato will shed it’s skin easily. I use a small sharp paring knife and start at the top peeling in a circular motion like you would an apple. Once peeled carefully slice the tomato starting at the stem top. Place the slices on a plate and lightly salt and pepper. Toast the bread, brush or drizzle olive oil on each slice then spread mustard over the slices. Arrange tomatoes on one slice and cover with the other. Slice sandwich in half and drizzle more olive oil and sprinkle a little salt over the top. The peeled tomato will melt in your mouth.

Now you have the basic add whatever you like. Of course you can do bacon and lettuce or your favorite cheese. I like to add sliced basil.

Robert J. McCaughey, 54

Long time resident of Riverside,RI. passed away unexpectedly Tuesday July 17.2012 He was the beloved son of Edmund McCaughey and the late Rose McCaughey.
