EP Local Advisory Committee for Special Education Fifth Annual Special Needs Recognition Awards

By Bob Rodericks The East Providence Local Advisory Committee for Special Education, held its annual recognition reception in early May before a large audience at Martin Middle School. The volunteers made up of parents of children with disabilities, teachers, staff and students had decorated the cafeteria brightly and provided for a dinner buffet. “Our committee meets throughout the school year to share information and concerns of educational issues,” said committee co-chair, Laurie Brown. The committees’ goals are: To enable parents of special education children to be effective in their advocacy efforts; to jointly advocate for all children with special needs, to aid the East Providence School Department in its efforts to provide quality education for all students and to provide each other with a strong network of support. continued on page 6...

Co-Chair Jennifer Enos welcomed the crowd and introduced East Providence School Committee Chairman Joel Monteiro.

“Joel has attended many of our meetings and has been a great advocate for our kids. He has been an invaluable resource to our families,” said Enos. During his remarks, Monteiro offered praise and support. “I have a good sense for our district. I feel very good.

Our Superintendent (Kim Mercer) has a true understanding of the special education program as a whole,” said Monteiro.

Awards Master of Ceremony, Sherry Hernandez announced the evening’s program winners. “Our award recipients tonight have been consistently outstanding in meeting the needs of our kids.

They show a great commitment to the students of East Providence,” Hernandez said. A poignant point in the program was the emotional introduction of award recipient Mariah Lobello, an EPHS student.

Lobello was nominated by parent, Debbie Davey on behalf of her 8 year old son. “Mariah has been working with my son who has autism. She has brought him out and made him feel comfortable in the community and better about public places. She has taught him things like having to wait his turn, having fun at the playground and

how to expand on his ideas,” said Davey. The relationship with this young student and Lobello was part of Lobello’s high school senior project. Lobello had met the Davey family through her volunteer work with the Autism & the Sacraments Program at St. Brendan’s Church some time ago. “Mariah asked us if she could work with our son for her senior project at EPHS,” Davey told the Reporter in an interview later in the evening. “Mariah puts her heart and soul in everything she does. She will make a great special needs teacher some day. I am so glad we met,” continued Davey. “Even after her senior project was done, Mariah continued to come by once a week and see our son,” continued Davey. “She is so special.” For her part, Mariah was unassuming. “He is a great little boy. I hope to help kids like him someday soon.”

And so the evening continued. Recipient after recipient was praised by a nominee. “Robyn Janczura nominated Erin Sladen, a Special Education teacher at Orlo Avenue School. “Erin is so dedicated to her school and kids,” said Janczura in her introduction of Sladen. “She welcomed my son mid-way through last school year and he has grown in ways I thought were not possible,” said Janczura. “She is always supportive and comforting. She always thanks the parents for their help. Tonight, it is my turn to thank her.”

Kim Callahan, a special needs teacher at the high school nominated EPHS student Casey Duckworth. “Casey reached out to make all students feel included. She is always friendly and encouraging to my students. It is a pleasure to have Casey at the high school,” continued Callahan.

EP Police Chief Back on Job “Facts Don’t Support Charges Against Chief ”

“It was a shame that Chief Tavares was unceremoniously removed from his job on the same day that the Boston bombings occurred. This was a political hatchet job against a good man and a great police chief.” This was the initial comment from Joseph Tavares’ attorney, Thomas J. McAndrew. During a meeting of the re-convened state budget commission in late May, the city was ordered to return Chief Tavares to his job. The move was not a surprise as it was widely expected for several days. A three page resolution voted on by the budget commission stated in part that; the Commission has determined, based upon the totality of facts and circumstances brought to its attention in this matter, that i) those facts and circumstances did not warrant Chief Tavares being placed on Administrative Leave; and ii) nor did those facts and circumstances warrant any disciplinary action against Chief Tavares…and his leave with pay is hereby terminated...” Attorney McAndrew told The Reporter what some in the city have also attributed to this series of events. “This is about some police officers, city officials and politicians who were unhappy with the hiring of Chief Tavares. Remember, initially the Tavares appointment had to go to arbitration before he could begin,” said McAndrew.

Rank and file within the department referred to contract provisions calling for promotions to come from within. Although many in the city are upset at what they saw as an “outsider” becoming chief of police, Tavares is from East Providence, having graduated from East Providence High School. The commission also ordered that acting chief Christopher Parella’s tenure as acting chief be terminated. While the original complaints came from some police officers to the city manager, Peter Graczykowski, the tide may take a turn in this case. “After consultation with Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, Col. Steven O’Donnell, the Commission and Colonel O’Donnell agreed that a member of the RI State Police will be assigned to the East Providence Police Department to investigate any alleged improprieties and/or irregularities; assist and support Chief Tavares with the management of the Police Department while the investigation is ongoing, and address or assist with any other issues that Chief Tavares and the State Police deem necessary.” During the commission’s investigation of the Tavares

suspension, the Chief allegedly raised the issue of irregularities with certain police officers. The commission evidently believes that enough evidence exists to assign a state police detective to investigate further.

The commission stated that “within the next 30 days, the Human Resources Director... shall assist and coordinate with Chief Tavares in addressing any discipline matters... that were pending as of April 15, 2013 (Tavares’ suspension date). After that, the Chief is ordered to provide -weekly updates to the City Manager and HR Director as to the status of disciplinary actions or internal complaints filed after April 15th. The commission also ordered the City Manager to develop written goals and objectives relative to the Police Chief’s duties and responsibilities as a way of job performance evaluation.

Before the session was over, a police union representative asked the commission to clarify its appointment of a State Police investigator in the department. Detective Kevin Feeney asked if the questions in charge could be criminal in nature. After some prodding, commission member Stephen Bannon, a retired state police detective answered, “yes they would be criminal actions.” Feeney asked Bannon if he was aware that the ‘policeman’s bill of rights’ (on disclosure) would apply here, to which Bannon replied, “yes”. Feeney wanted to know, “who went to the state police?” “It was a collective decision,” said Detective Bannon.

The particulars had no comments until after the meeting. After the meeting City Manager, Peter Graczykowski, told The Reporter that he disagreed with the commission’s decision. Graczykowski and Mayor James Briden abstained from the vote to reinstate Tavares. “I strongly feel that I was justified in relieving the Chief based on my investigation,” Graczykoski said. He further denied that politics or his own job security was involved. However, Tavares and his attorney were satisfied with the commission. “The chief is elated,” said McAndrew.

Attorney McAndrew, who was a focus in an earlier Reporter article, has worked behind the scenes on behalf of his client. “Yes, I have a good man, here,” Tavares said referring to McAndrew. In correspondence with the city attorney, Michael Ursillo, McAndrew raised the possibility of “litigation”, a fact that was mentioned by commission chair Diane Brennan as a reason for reinstating

Tavares. “If this ends up in litigation, you can be assured that those current and former City Council members (involved in pressuring the City Manager) will be brought to the bar of justice...”, warned McAndrew.

“We will not be intimidated or coerced by the political shenanigans that have all too often enveloped themselves in employment matters in the City of East Providence. Chief Tavares has no intention of being run out of the City of East Providence because he is the first from outside the East Providence Police Department. Enough is enough!,” added McAndrews.

EP AFO Coming: “Work in Progress” Who Is In Charge?

Rosemary Booth Gallogly, the Rhode Island State Director of Finance was in attendance at the May 23rd budget commission meeting, in anticipation of questions regarding the police chief reinstatement and the hiring of an Administrative & Finance Officer (AFO). Gallogly didn’t address the police chief issue but she did come to the commission’s defense on the AFO. State law calls for a locally paid AFO once a budget commission is dissolved.

City Manager Peter Graczykowski continuously questioned fellow commission members on the role of an AFO. “We are paying a person a lot of money to do something we already do,” Graczykowski said. Graczykowski and city council member Chrissy Rossi tried to assert that the city charter does not allow council members to deal with personnel. They question why ward 1 councilman and Mayor Jim Briden should be the person an AFO would report to. At odds is the state mandate which says the AFO is selected by and reports to the “chief elected official” in a community. Briden serves as a ceremonial Mayor and spokesperson of the council with East Providence’s city manager form of government.

Some believe the city’s highest ranking officer is the city manager not the Mayor’s post.

School Committee Chairman, Joel Monteiro, serves on the budget commission as a courtesy and does not vote. However, Monteiro joined Graczykowski in voicing concerns. “It is not personal against Mr. Briden, but he only represents Ward 1. That is not representative of the entire city. Monteiro also wanted to know if all actions of the school department had to go through an AFO as well as the reconstituted budget commission. “Our Superintendent has daily operations to maintain and we have to prepare for the close of school and the opening in September,” he said. “This is a work in progress” said Gallogly repeating a phrase she and commission chair Brennan have used before to speak to an AFO in a city with a manager form of government. However, the commission did state that “legal opinion says that the AFO is over the school superintendent as well as city hall.” Although acknowledging that an AFO will receive some $140,000 in a total employment package, the logistics will be reviewed at the next meeting in early June. The commission voted to accept the salary package with only Graczykowski voting against. “How can we vote for the salary when we don’t know his or her duties yet?” he asked.

PondView Closure Imminent?

RI DEM Issues Statement

The RI Department of Environmental Management (DEM) issued a statement in late May in which the closing of the long controversial Pond View Recycling was to begin on May 28th. Gail Mastrati of the DEM announced that “that the removal of construction and demolition debris from the site of the former Trans-Load America (TLA)/ Pond View recycling facility in East Providence is set to begin on Tuesday, May 28, in order to avoid any possible disturbance to residents over the long holiday weekend.” TLA-Providence, LLC was the operator of the former TLA/Pond View construction and demolition debris processing facility located at One Dexter Road in East Providence. The business was put into Receivership in March 2012, and the facility ceased operations on September 10, 2012.

“Fuss & O’Neill has been Retained by DEM as an Independent Oversight Contractor to Monitor and Oversee Closure of the Site,” said Mastrati.

Under the terms of a Performance Agreement with the DEM, closure of the site must be completed within 60 business days and performed in accordance with the closure plan and all license requirements, laws, rules and regulations. The hours of operation for closure work are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. During this time, residents may notice increased traffic and experience odors.

The intent of the company performing the closure work is to remove most of the material via rail; recyclable material will be removed via truck.

The press release went on to state that the “DEM will monitor performance to ensure that the property owner is performing the work satisfactorily and in accordance with all applicable requirements. The independent contractor will be paid from the bond funds to oversee the closure, perform air monitoring and report daily to DEM. Air monitoring data will be provided to the RI Department of Health for review. As well, weekly construction meetings will be held at the site throughout the duration of the cleanup. These meetings will include a representative of DEM and the property owner. DEM will oversee the closure, including the disbursement of the bond funds dedicated to finance the closure. Money from the bond will only be used for activities directly addressed in the closure plan, and once the closure is completed, the existing license to process construction and demolition debris at this site will be terminated.”

In order to monitor conditions at the site and the progress of the closure, the DEM has been conducting regular inspections and actively participating in the legal proceedings related to the Receivership, with a goal of seeing that the required closure take place

Steve Fratiello, who was brought on as a consultant and eventually became the EP school department controller, is resigning to take a similar post with Pawtucket schools.

Fratiello is currently the lone administrator overseeing daily school finances. He continues a trend of those leaving the EP school department for other posts. Malcom Moore was recently hired as Finance Director for both city and school departments. Former Interim Superintendent Edward Daft left for an Assistant Principalship in Barrington.

Beth Salzillo a former EP teacher and reading supervisor, then curriculum director, recently left for a curriculum post in Pawtucket schools. Dawn August (curriculum) and Julie Motta (administration) have recently been hired by new EP superintendent, Kim Mercer. All three worked in Pawtucket schools before coming to East Providence.

The budget commission allowed the city to seek temporary help in finance while a permanent replacement is found. “We hoped the finance person (Fratiello)would have stayed here a little longer, but he is leaving,” said Moore.

DEM inspectors have examined and measured the piles on many occasions and have seen no evidence of any wastes other than the construction and demolition debris that TLA/Pond View was licensed to handle when it was an active facility. There is no evidence of any toxic or hazardous wastes on the site. The inspectors have also been specifically looking for any evidence that additional disposal had occurred at the site and have seen no evidence of this. What remains are the piles left when the facility ceased business operation. The public was invited to check on regular updates by going to the Dem. RI.Gov web site.

St. Martha’s Heritage Day Festival Friday, June 21st thru Sunday June 23rd

Dear East Providence Townies, Friends & Neighbors It’s that time of year again. Festivals, Picnics, Parades, Cookouts – the making of good family times and memories begin.

There is nothing like the Annual Heritage Day Festival at St. Martha’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, RI which always takes place toward the end of the month of June rain or shine. This annual event started back in 1985, celebrating 28 years.

I enjoy listening to the many stories and memories being told about this event from over the past years. By coming to this festival I have made some new friends of my own and have reunited with others. My family also has made memories here over the years and look forward to making more and continuing the tradition. There is always good homemade food and new local talent providing entertainment.

Some of St. Martha’s Heritage Day Festival 2013 events have been announced and I wanted to share with you what folks can expect. We are bringing back the theme of “Family Time”. There will be a section dedicated to the children with games – prizes – and even a child’s petting zoo. The Petting Zoo is scheduled for Sunday, June 23rd, between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. It will include kittens, chickens, baby goats, and a pot belly pig. Face Painting, Needle in the Haystack and Speed Gun Baseball are also on schedule each day for the children. For those ages 13+, St. Martha’s is having something NEW called “Movie Night”. On Friday, June 21st 9pm – 11pm the movie is “Facing the Giants” and on Saturday June 22nd 9pm – 11pm the movie is “Perfect Game”. On both Saturday and Sunday St. Martha’s is introducing a new Program called a “Motion Movement Hour”. This will be in the Music Area when the entertainment takes their break. Come stretch it out and learn some of the newest dance steps. There will be fun for all ages. continued on next page...

While this will be a fun event it will also have a religious aspect to it. The festival will commence with a “Healing Mass” on Thursday, June 20 at 7:00 pm. All those who are elderly or have health issues may receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at this Mass. On Sunday, June 23rd events begin with Mass at 12:00 noon. After Mass is what has become the Traditional Procession thru the local streets surrounding St. Martha’s Parish. This Spiritual Procession will consist of our Pastor, Father David Green, Parishioners, St. Martha’s Youth Group, and many more and will begin at 1:00 pm. As they proudly process with the statue of Our Lady of Fatima and our patroness, St. Martha the people will recite the rosary along the way. This part of the Heritage Day Festival is one of the most important, as it is where we get to reflect on the meaning of Faith, Family, and Friends coming together as one; all of us working together to bring peace, harmony and fulfillment to one another. The procession ends back at the church parking lot where festivities then begin on the midway, where old friends meet and new friends are made.

It would not be Heritage Days at St. Martha’s if we did not have the traditional Malassadas available along with the other good ethnic foods such as Italian Sausage & Pepper Sandwiches, Cacoila Plates & Sandwiches, Chowder and Clam cakes, just to name a few that are prepared by the St. Martha’s volunteer parishioners.

Let me tell you now about the Live Entertainment scheduled under the Big Tent. Friday Night June 21st from 7:00 pm-8:00 pm the East Providence Chorus will sing and from 8:00 pm-11:00 pm Tony Medeiros and “Side by Each” will perform. On Saturday, June 22nd starting at 6:00 pm is Martinho & “Speed Limit” with Special Guest Sandy Berto. On Sunday, June 23rd, during the afternoon, there is a DJ scheduled and then at 7:00 pm “Rocktail Renditions” will be performing till 1o:00 pm. By Rep. Dennis M. Canario In the wake of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, the General Assembly leadership joined with Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin and law enforcement officials to introduce a package of gun legislation, including several bills that seek to strengthen existing laws dealing with firearms violations.

Since the introduction of those bills, the House Committee on Judiciary, on which I serve, has held a lengthy hearing. Over the course of about eight hours, many people testified on the various bills. There was clearly a great assortment of opinions, from strong support to strong opposition.

I am writing to share with my constituents my personal perspective on this issue. As was the case with many people with whom I have spoken, the senseless shootings at the Newtown elementary school made me incredibly sad. Gun violence in our nation, the daily loss of innocent lives, the toll this all puts on families and communities is a serious matter that demands attention.

I am not convinced, however, that some of the legislation introduced in the General Assembly this year presents the best means to address the problem. Because of Newtown, and other all-toomany recent highly-publicized shooting and killing rampages, I understand the desire to act, to try to better protect our citizens. As someone who has spent more than 25 years in law enforcement, I understand the commitment to serve and protect.

Like many, I firmly believe in protecting the Second Amendment right to bear arms and not doing anything that could infringe upon that right. I make that statement as am American citizen and as a public official who has sworn to uphold our constitution, but I am not a member of the NRA or any other gun organization.

I also support tougher laws on gun crimes, and I support putting resource officers back into the schools and in training and arming college police officers.

I think we must be careful if we are going to act on any gun legislation to take a steady and rational approach, and not a kneejerk reaction, to the issue. Increasing penalties for various gun violations – stealing a firearm, carrying and using a stolen firearm in the commission of a crime, etc. – is a message I believe we need to send to individuals who are not law-abiding citizens exercising their right to own a weapon.

Back in the 1980s, when we had a severe problem with drunk driving, we didn’t ban alcohol, or limit individuals’ access to certain types of alcohol. We got tougher on the drunk driving laws. We implemented heftier penalties.

It was also about that same time when speeding was resulting in many traffic fatalities. We lowered the speed limit and got

June 2013 The Reporter tougher on speeding fines. The federal government went so far as to provide grants to police departments around the nation to help crack down on speeders. All those actions helped crack down on speeding and helped to cut the highway fatality rate. We did not accomplish that by outlawing cars that went too fast.

We need laws that address the core problems of gun violence, not laws that impinge on the rights of law-abiding citizens. If we are going to consider any gun legislation this General Assembly session, it is my hope that those bills do not only address guns, but rather gun crimes and criminals with guns.

East Providence Town News HeritageFest 33 Features New Theme!

More than 30 years ago, the Annual EP Heritage Festival began. Now in its 33rd year, the premiere summer event in East Providence, has been credited with literally putting our city on the map. HeritageFest is a source of townie pride and a glaring example of our community’s spirit. The festival honors foods, cultures, and traditions from around the world, but its main attraction has always been the performances from world renowned recording acts who graced the stage each night.

Yet, the days of securing national acts to perform at HeritageFest are over, at least for now. EP Heritage Days Inc., Committee Chairman Clarence “Junior” Butler, explains, “Casinos have created a huge issue for us. The amount of money casinos can pay national acts, far surpasses what we can pay. National recording acts now charge anywhere between $30,000 dollars to $50,000 dollars, which does not include their other expenses, such as hotels and limos and such. We just cannot afford that,” he said simply.

Board members Alba Curti, Joe Medeiros, and Diane Sullivan nodded in agreement, and then began to explain how the committee will address the money issue and still provide a great festival.

“We are offering ‘TributeMania’ this year,” said Curti. “We cannot provide original acts, so we will provide the next best thing,” she said brightly.

Medeiros added, “We are actually providing 50 years of classic rock, from The Who, U2, 3 Dog Night, Chicago, and Springsteen!

We had to cut back on expenses all around, so we tried to cut back on things that are not too noticeable, such as screens. We want the people to still enjoy the same experience that they have always had when they come to the festival, and that means staying true to the music!”

More discussion revealed that the idea to use tribute bands was very well thought out, and it seems like it is the perfect solution for HeritageFest. Firstly, the cost is significantly better. Secondly, the festival will now offer the experience of 5 national acts, instead of just one or two. Thirdly, good tribute acts are known for performing dead-on renditions of their host bands’ most popular tunes, so they are almost sure to please the crowd.

Though the festival has continued to grow in popularity throughout the decades, committee members say that that success has created some misperceptions and criticisms too. Curti explained, “One thing that we get all the time are people who say to us, ‘You guys are making money, why can’t you hire national acts?’ Well, we don’t make money! All of the 16 members of this board are volunteers. We don’t get paid to put this together.”

Butler further emphasized that point by adding, “People of this city have to understand that we are footing the bill alone, with our sponsors. The City of EP no longer contributes to the festival, and it has not contributed to it for a while now. We are doing this ourselves, as volunteers! We are not complaining because we love our city, and we love what we do! But, we are not making money at this!”

Butler later said that HeritageFest costs between $120,000 to $150,000 per year. “So, all monies earned at the festival gets put right back into the festival for current expenses and expenses for the next year. It’s that simple,” he said.

Committee members then addressed another criticism. Medeiros said, “Some people actually complain about the cost to come to this festival! Paying $5.00 on a Friday night, or $10.00 on a Saturday or on Sunday, is more than reasonable for what they get in return.”

Butler added, “If they honestly add up all that is offered at the festival, they have to admit that there is no other venue anywhere, that even comes close to offering a similar experience for that kind of money,” he said. .

But, criticisms, misperceptions, and lack of city funding aside, committee members stressed their gratitude to the public, and sought to make a plea for continued support, so that the festival can continue. Sullivan explained, “We need volunteers, we need sponsors and donations of any amount, and we need attendance.

This is all the support that we get. If we are to continue doing this festival, we need the continued support of volunteers and sponsors, and the public’s attendance,” she said.

Butler adds, “We are so grateful to our great sponsors! Many of them have been with us for many years. And, our volunteers, and the people who come out and attend this event. Because of them, we have been able to keep this going!” Butler also gave a shout out to the EPPD for their continued presence and support at the festival.

Medeiros gave more explanation of why volunteers are needed, “We don’t have the inner staff that we used to have. We used to rely on summer help with kids who worked in our summer camps and playgrounds. But, we don’t have that anymore, so we’re reaching out to anyone who would like to help.”

Curti suggested volunteering to fulfill community service quotas.

The 2013 tax rates for the City of East Providence are Residential 22.78, Commercial/ Industrial 25.21, Business Tangible 56.25, and Motor Vehicle 37.10. The City has a 13% homestead reduction for owner occupied one, two and three family dwellings which makes the effective residential rate 19.82. The City completed a revaluation in 2012 which saw property values reduced by ten to fifteen percent depending on property type. The overall tax levy increased by 2.4%. This would have resulted in an increase of fifty cents on last year’s residential tax rate without consideration of the revaluation. The average single family home worth two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000) will see an increase of one hundred dollars $100.00. Quarterly due dates are July 1st 2013, September 3rd 2013, December 2nd 2013, and March 3rd 2014. There is a 1.5% discount for taxes paid in full

by July 1st, 2013.

EP Recreation Offering Summer Programs

Summer day camp: Summer day camp for youth ages 6-15 will run July 8-August 16. Camp is held at Pierce Field, 201 Mercer St. and will run rain or shine M-F 8:30am – 3:30pm. The 2013 program will be a collaboration with the city’s school and recreation departments and the Newman YMCA to bring the Hasbro summer learning initiative to the camp experience! The initiative features hands-on experiential learning throughout a traditional camp day.

Daily activities are designed with fun in mind while being tied to core curriculum standards. Certified teachers design and lead activities alongside recreation camp counselors and teaching assistants. Camp activities will also include field trips, swimming, special events, arts & crafts, sports and more! Free breakfast and lunch will be provided by “Y On the Move”. Camp fee is $50 per child per week. Registration is taken in person at the Recreation Center, 100 Bullocks Point Ave., or the department’s main office,

EPRD To Offer Babysitting Certifications

The EP Recreation dept. will offer babysitter’s certification programs for youth ages 11-16. Participants may choose between two sessions being offered on the following dates: Session I: Mon. & Wed., June 17 & 19, 5:30-8:30pm Session II: Saturday, June 22, 9am-3:30pm.

The certification classes will take place at the Recreation Center located at 100 Bullocks Point Ave. Course instructors are registered nurses with over 30 years’ experience in the health care field and are American Heart Association certified CPR and First Aid instructors. Nurses Cathy & Donna will provide a fast paced, interactive and fun learning experience!

The first 3 hours of instruction focuses on CPR and choking for the adult, child and infant. Students will also learn how to use an AED. The second half of the program will cover learning the elements of 1st aid and child safety, and stages of child development. Participants will also learn how to change and feed a baby and how to get their babysitting business started!

Program fee is $70 per person which includes a CPR book, reference materials, a certificate of completion and snacks.

East Providence Native/BMX Legend Kevin Robinson Hosting Family Fun Festival June 8th, 2013

K-Rob will be holding his 3rd annual Ride with K-Rob Family Fun Festival on Saturday, June 8th in East Providence. The ride will start at Pierce Field in East Providence, traveling down the East Bay Bike Path and ending with the Fun Festival at the Carousel.

The ride and Fun Festival are free and open to the public. Festival activities include live karate and gymnastics demonstrations from Lovetts Tae Kwon Do and Aim High Academy, a family style football combine with former NFL safety Jamie Silva, vendors and live music. An extensive line-up of 9 local music acts includes Kicking Hole, Pat Lowell Acoustic and more. A new addition to this year’s festival will be the Wisdom to Youth BMX contest, sponsored by K-Rob Events, Red Bull and Hoffman Bikes.

Featuring both legendary pioneers of the sport and up-andcoming amateurs, the 80s-themed event will be an exciting attraction and a chance for attendees to see some of the best BMX riders in the sport in action. Later in the evening, the Festival will continue with a premiere of the documentary “A Wicked Ride”, about the start and growth of BMX in New England. During the Festival, Kevin will also be awarding the 2nd annual “Junior Seau Award of Excellence” to someone who goes above and beyond to help the community, in memory of his close friend Junior Seau.

“Giving Back” Fundraiser June 23rd

The Portuguese Kids are a comedy group from Fall River, MA and they perform “The funnier side of growing up Portuguese”. If you are Portuguese you don’t want to miss it! If you’re not Portuguese you’ll wish you were! It’s a fun night, the price is right and all proceeds will be donated to the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes mission is “working together for stronger, healthier babies”.

Their focus is to prevent birth defects and premature birth. Every parent wants noth-

June 2013 ing more than to have a happy and healthy baby, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. When a parent is faced with life threatening circumstances it is devastating and frightening. What is supposed to be one of the happiest times in their life quickly changes to the worst time of their life. Feelings of fear, hopelessness and worry take over. The unknown makes it hard for them to focus on anything, but their baby and their baby’s needs. Their own needs are not a priority. The doctors and nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Women and Infants Hospital do an outstanding job, there is no denying that, but their focus is on the baby, as it should be. The March of Dimes recognizes that parents need help and support as well and are there in the NICU to provide it to them.

Jake Correia was born eight weeks early on March 13, 2011. In the labor room, his parents were told that he would probably weigh 1 pound. They were also told that the medical team from the NICU would be there to take him away the minute he was born. What should have been the happiest day of their life quickly became the most frightening day of their life. It was the unknown that made it so difficult. They were wheeled into the OR and Jake was born at 2lbs 7oz. What a relief that he weighed more than 1 pound. Mom and Dad were able to see him for a couple of minutes and then he was off to the NICU. The next time they saw Jake he was hooked up to all sorts of machines. The monitors in the room quickly became his parents’ main focus. They learned what each number meant and were on guard. It was a week before Mom or Dad could hold Jake. This certainly is not the experience that most newborn parents have. Jake was in the NICU for 6 weeks and went home weighing 4 pounds. Bringing him home was bittersweet because even though they were thrilled to finally bring their son home, they no longer had the safety net that the NICU provided. They worked through each challenge one day at a time and with each ounce that Jake gained he became stronger and more resilient. Jake is now 2 years old and weighs 24 pounds. He is a normal, happy and healthy little boy with an easy going personality that loves baseball, basketball and Buzz Light Year.

His parents, Andrea and Manny Correia are forever grateful for all the love and support that they have received from family and friends. They are also grateful to the March of Dimes. They recognize the importance of their ongoing research on birth defects and premature births and in turn, they want to Give Back. They have coordinated this event on June 23rd and are hoping that you will join them in Giving Back. Trendy’s Pizzeria: Taste the Difference. Be a Part of the Trend.

The two-time defending winner of the title #1 Pizza in the East Bay, Trendy’s Pizzeria is changing the way pizza is made, and changing it for the better. “The best thing about eating at Trendy’s is that you’re always feeding yourself and your family the freshest ingredients,” says owner Mark Etheridge. He runs the business along with his wife Karina and of course the indispensible help of their daughters Maya (5) and Ava (2).

The fresh trend is true of the pizza toppings, the pasta, the meatballs, and so on. Everything you eat was either made from scratch right there in the restaurant or fresh cut, on the premises that day. The crust on every single pizza is hand rolled from freshly made dough.

There are a ton of specials available throughout the week at Trendy’s. For you students at East Providence High or Riverside Middle School, Monday’s afterschool specials include $7 large cheese pizzas, $1 cans of soda, and $1.25 toppings from 2-4pm.

Monday night means two large one topping pizzas are just $15.99. On Tuesdays, large cheese pizzas are just $6 and additional toppings are only $1.25 each.

Wednesday night is pasta night, with two pasta dinners and two garden salads for $19.99. If you’ve got a bigger gathering, you can get a half tray of pasta and half tray of garden salad for $39.99. There’s also a special on Wednesday that gets you a large one topping pizza and 10 wings for $15.99.

To celebrate Throwback Thursdays, large cheese pizzas are just $9.99 with $1.25 toppings. Last but certainly not least, there are great specials for lunch (until 3pm) during the workweek. You can grab two slices of cheese and a beverage for $4.99 or a half garden salad and a quarter sandwich for the same price.

You can get any and all of these deals at either of their two locations. The first, which many of you have loyally patronized since it opened in 2004, is at 59 Maple Avenue in Barrington. But don’t forget their recently opened location at 2777 Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence, where things are really taking off as well.

In addition to being a great place to grab a slice, Trendy’s is becoming an integral part of the local community. In Barrington, they run the poolside food at the Bayside YMCA. You can also catch them at local fundraisers and sporting events, including lots of events in the schools.

Having a big event in the near future? You might want to consider Trendy’s for catering. They don’t just make and deliver delicious dishes for your get-together, they’ll also advertise it on their pizza boxes, facebook page, and website.

Club News & Announcements St. Brendan Forever Young Club

The St. Brendan Forever Young Club will have their June banquet at the Wharf Tavern in Warren at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 11. Rumford Lions Scott Gorham Road Race

On Sunday April 28th the Rumford Lions hosted the 14th Annual Rumford Lions/Scott Gorham 5k Road Race& family Fun Walk.

Over the years, as a result of this event, over $50,000 has benefited the Scott Gorham Scholarship Fund and other charitable works of the Rumford Lions. The weather cooperated resulting in another successful event. Although the participants pay an entry fee the race could not take place without the support of our sponsors and donors. Grange Church Services

The Rhode Island State Grange will be sponsoring two church services during the month of June.

The State Grange Church Service will be on Sunday June 2, 2013 at 7 PM at Wakefield Baptist Church on 236 Main Street in Wakefield. The State Grange Officers are asked to wear their sashes as they will form a line of march into the church.

The members of Granges in Washington County will serve as hosts and provide refreshments following the service. Grange members, family, and friends are welcome to attend.

The New England Grange Church Service will be on Sunday June 23, 2013 at the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, New Hampshire. The State Grange will be carpooling from Rocky Hill Grange in East Greenwich at 11 AM and stop briefly at a fast food restaurant for a quick lunch on their own. The service will begin at 3 PM. Following the church service, there will be a roast beef dinner with strawberry shortcake for dessert provided by members of Granite Grange in Milford, New Hampshire. The price of this trip, which includes transportation and dinner is $25 per person. Those who do not wish to carpool along with the group are welcome for dinner at the cost of $10 per person.

The East Providence Historical Society takes a break from regular meetings in the summer but we realize that many people like to take a summer Sunday afternoon to steep themselves in history and the natural beauty of Hunts Mills. This summer, EPHS highlights many of the stored Rumford artifacts from our vast collection and spotlights the new Sellew collection. And look for EPHS and the Rumford recipes featured in the magazine “Edible Rhody” which will be available in mid June. As always, treats made with Rumford Baking Powder will be served.

If you have visited City Hall recently, you may have noticed the eye catching display about the City –owned Odd Fellows Hall.

Thanks to the EP Historic District Commission and the Planning Department for an excellent presentation. This display will move to the Hunt House in time for our annual picnic and “2nd Sunday” open houses.

In July, the Hunt House Master Gardener site will be featured on the Master Gardener Tour, July 12 -14th. Master gardeners from the URI program will be on hand to welcome visitors and answer questions all weekend.

Rumford Lions Announce “Peace Poster“contest winners

Each year Lions Clubs International sponsors a worldwide contest in which students ages 11 through 13 draw a poster that interprets the peace theme for that given year. The theme for the 2012 – 2013 contest was “Imagine Peace”.

The students are provided with a copy of the rules and have approximately 6 weeks to complete their poster. Upon completion a team of five judges consisting of the respective schools Art Teacher, Principal, and Resource Officer, a member of the Rumford Lions, and a local artist determine the winners. The posters are judged in Theme Interpretation, Artistic Merit, and Originality. The students whose posters are judged first, second and third receive a cash prize and a certificate. In addition the poster of the first place finisher in each of the schools goes on to the state competition. The winner of the state goes on to the international contest where the top prize is $5,000 and twenty three $500 awards are also given. The top prize is presented to the winner at the United Nations in New York City.

A native of East Providence, R.I., Dr. Perry is the daughter of Mr. Jess Perry III and Mrs. Deborah Perry. She graduated from St. Mary Academy-Bay View in Riverside, R.I. in 2007 and plans to start as a Pharmacy Resident at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence, R.I. this summer.

Local Piano Students Audition for National Piano Guild

Over sixty local piano students from the classes of Melissa Grossi and Gregory Moses have registered as candidates for membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians, sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Teacher Division of the American College of Musicians, of which their teachers are members. This group of young pianists perform in the National Piano-Playing Auditions on May 30-June 2, 2013, and will strive for Hobbyist, Pledge, Local, District, State, National, and International honors. The American College of Musicians will evaluate the students’ performances based upon their presentation of baroque, classic, romantic, and modern works. Each student will perform in the presence of a professional adjudicator chosen by the National organization who will examine their repertoire.

Throughout the US and abroad, over 100,000 enthusiastic piano pupils will participate in the annual National Piano-Playing Auditions which are held in over 880 music centers. Each entrant will be given a certificate, a gold, silver, or bronze embossed pin, a report card, and a year’s membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians.

Established in 1929 by Dr. Irl Allison, the first Auditions were held at Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas. The National Headquarters is maintained in Austin, Texas.

The Senior Tennis Hall of Fame induction and Pizza Party was held Monday April 29th at Centre Court in East Providence. Charlie no drop back Somers on left, Al sure hand Colella on right, and Henry Godin not in picture were given pins, Boston Strong shirts and certificates. Norman Phaneuf got the most improved while Chris Bickford got the Foot Fault Award. The Service Award went to Joe Bakanaukas. Adin Demary acted as MC and has played a special role in the club, acting as spokesman, greeter, and club supporter. The club’s motto is “Tennis just for the fun of it”

The ChoruS of East Providence Elects New Officers

Christopher Dionisopoulos, a resident of East Providence, RI and a member of the class of 2013 at Providence College, was inducted into Omicron Delta Epsilon, the national honor society for Economics. Dionisopoulos is pursuing a degree in Economics.

Courtney Miller, a resident of Rumford, RI and a member of the class of 2013 at Providence College, was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the national honor society for Mathematics. Miller is pursuing a degree in Biology.

Belinda Soares, a resident of East Providence, RI and a member of the class of 2013 at Providence College, was inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, the national honor society for Foreign Language Studies.

Soares is pursuing a degree in Spanish/Psychology.

The Chorus of East Providence was incorporated as a Rhode Island non-profit organization in September 2007 and is now designated as a 501(c)(3) status organization. The Chorus is led by its Board of Directors and operates in accordance with its Bylaws.

The ChoruS of East Providence has elected a new slate of officers for the 2013-2014 musical season.

Summer performances include the opening celebration of Saint Martha’s Heritage Days Friday night June 21 at 7:00 pm and the singing of the National Anthem Friday June 28th at 7:05 pm at Paw Sox’s game in Pawtucket .

Forty-six students from 27 schools were honored at the Fourteenth Annual Middle Level Scholar Leader Awards Banquet. The event was organized by the Rhode Island Middle Level Educators (RIMLE) and the New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS) with a supporting sponsorship from Lifetouch National School Studios.

Though Motta and Mercer have only worked for the East Providence school department for one and two months respectively, their otherwise lengthy careers in education make their assessments of the city’s educational climate even more impressive. Mercer spent 27 years in the Pawtucket school system before coming to RI Lic #17985 Insured EP. Her most recent position, which she held for 11 years, was Deputy Superintendent for the City of Pawtucket. Additionally, Mercer says, “I have been a special educator my entire teaching career. I taught mostly at the elementary level. I also taught for 8 or 9 years at Rhode Island College, as an adjunct professor in the special education department.”

Motta’s teaching career began 23 years ago, but her desire to become an educator began long before that. “I was inspired to become a teacher by my own 7th grade teacher, who was fantastic!

I taught CCD when I was in high school, and then actually started teaching in the Catholic school I had attended, so my principal was my first boss,” she laughed.

Motta further explained, “I stayed in that position for 5 years and then began teaching ESL in Providence for 13 years. Then, in 2007 I went to Pawtucket, where I was the Director of the ESL

Elaine Mathers, the Service Unit Manager of East Providence Girl Scouts, received the Appreciation Pin award during Girl Scouts of Rhode Island’s annual meeting held at the Venus DeMilo Restaurant in Swansea, Ma. on May 2nd. The appreciation pin is a Girl Scouts of America recognition which is given for outstanding performance, above and beyond the expectations for the position held and is delivered to at least one geographic division or service unit and contributes to Girl Scouts of Rhode Island goals and objectives.

Elaine has been a member of Girl Scouts for 39 years and has dedicated her adult life to making a difference in the lives of young women through Girl Scouts. She has been the Service Unit Manager for East Providence for the past 18 years. As such, she is the key volunteer representative for Girl Scout operations in East Providence. She provides ongoing leader support through communications and leader meetings, provides guidance to retain and extend membership, helps establish effective communication with the membership and general public, and represents Girl Scouts of Rhode Island in community contacts and collaboration.

In 1999 when Girl Scouts of Rhode Island decided to divest themselves of Scout Houses, Elaine was the founding force in forming the non-profit organization called The East Providence Scout House Association. She wanted to ensure that East Providence Girl Scouts would always have a home. The East Providence Scout House Association maintains and operates the scout house located in Riverside. Since then, she has managed the daily operations of the building and organizes events to raise funds to pay for the expenses of the building. East Providence Girl Scouts are proud to say that we were the only community in Rhode Island to keep its scout house!

EPHS Boys Outdoor Track & Field Impressive

The EPHS Boys Outdoor Track & Field team continued their successful season by once again placing high and scoring nearly 100 team points in a major statewide competition. This time it was the Townie freshman excelling at the Rhode Island Freshman State Championship Meet. The Townies led most of the meet but fell a little short placing third and winning the unofficial public school title by finishing behind their private school rivals Bishop Hendricken and LaSalle Academy. “Our young Townies showed the future of East Providence Track & Field is in fact bright by earning a number of individual champions and high places at the meet,” said coach Bob Lyons. Among the young Townies registering impressive performances were; Alex Duarte 1st place 400 Meter, CJ Hazzard 1st place 110 Meter High Hurdles, 2nd place 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles, Paulo Pereira 2nd place 110 Meter High Hurdles, 6th place 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles, 4th place Long Jump, 5th place Long Jump, Jayden Chase 5th place 100 Meter, 5th place Shot Put, Alex Gorman 3rd place 800 Meter, 5th place 1500 Meter, Chris Santos 4th place 800 Meter, Dan Delucca 6th place 800 Meter, the 4x400 Meter Relay team consisting of Chris Santos, CJ Hazzard, Alex Gorman and Alex Duarte 1st place, the 4x800 Meter Relay team consisting of Chris Santos, Brett Tierney, Dan Delucca and Alex Gorman 2nd place and the 4x100 Meter Relay team consisting of Alex Duarte, CJ Hazzard, Justin Johnson and Jayden Chase 2nd place.

State Championship and finished second overall at the Hendricken Invitational. The meet held on Sunday May 26, 2013 at Bishop Hendricken was the final state meet qualifier of the year. “As has been the case during every state meet qualifier this season, the Townies once again registered a top two team finish. The Townies did not have their usual sterling effort but despite some bumpy individual performances that were less than expected, the Townies enter next week with a ton of momentum and remain in position next week to leave Brown Stadium as Rhode Island State Champions,” said a hopeful coach Lyons. Among the Townies winning individual championships and placing at the Hendricken Invitational were; Chris Moura 1st place Long Jump, Trystan Casey with a personal best jump of 42’-3” 1st place Triple Jump, Ryan Williams 1st place 200 Meter, Josh Rambert 4th place 110 Meter High Hurdles, Matt Horton 4th place 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles, the 4x100 Meter Relay team consisting of Chris Moura, Josh Rambert, Trystan Casey and Ryan Williams who place 3rd on an off day. Although he finished just out of the placings Leon Edmonds threw a personal best in the Shot Put. The team will attempt to win their first Rhode Island State Outdoor Track & Field Championship since 1996.

The boys volleyball took sole possession of 1st place in Division 1 North with a 3-0 win over perennial powerhouse Hendricken in late May at home. EPHS Baseball Stays On Top of Division II

Baseball continues to roll along with a 16-1 record. Recent lopsided wins have concluded the Townies regular season as they get ready for playoff action. EP has scored 160 runs to date with the combined opposition scoring only 42. Several Townies are among the state’s leaders. Nick Karalekas leads all hitters with a 660 batting average. He is also playing superb defensive shortstop. Alex Hurley, Collin Costa and Michael Allienello round out the league hitting leaders. Keith Grant is the state’s leading pitcher with a 6-0 record and a 0.92 ERA. Christian ‘CJ’ Woods is the division’s third leading pitcher with a 6-1 record. Kyle Marquis is also among the state leaders with a 2-0 record and a low 0.82 ERA.

Bay View Softball

Bay View has improved to an 8-8 record with wins in May over Warwick Vets, Tollgate, Woonsocket and East Providence. They also defeated Chariho and Mt. St. Charles. The Bengals are in 6th place.

Townies Softball

County Soccer winning 3-0. The finals were held on Sunday and the team played Blackwatch winning 4-0. The team has traveled to West Virginia and Pennsylvania for Regionals, but the next 2 years, Regionals will be held at URI in Kingston, RI beginning with Opening Ceremonies on Thursday, June 27th. Preliminary Games will be held June 28 through June 30 with semi-finals and finals held on July 1 through July 2.

History was also made for the State of RI, as Bayside became the first ever soccer team in Rhode Island to win the US Youth Soccer Northeast Subregional League and advancing next spring to the Region 1 Premier League. During the season, the team played teams in New York, CT, and Massachusetts. They won their group in regular season play scoring 19 goals and only allowing 1. On Saturday, May 11th, the team played the winner of the other group, Smithtown Thunder from New York at Deerfield Park. The game, which was being played in the rain, was tied at 80 minutes of regular play. The game remained tied after 20 minutes of overtime play sending them to penalty shootout to which the team won!

Alexander DoRego#19 from Riverside who is a Sophomore at East Providence High School has been on this team for 7 years.

The Townies are in a 4 way tie for 5th place. EP has wins over North Kingstown, Tollgate, Portsmouth and Warwick Vets during May action. They suffered tough losses against LaSalle, Coventry, BayView and Cumberland.

Bayside FC Bolts U15 Boys Win a Hat Trick of Championships

Memorial Day weekend, The Bayside FC Bolts U15 Boy’s team attended the largest tournament held in Massachusetts, the 37th Needham Memorial Day Tournament -- Invitational & GPS College Showcase. The team, over the long weekend, played the Westchester Flames from Eastern New York, the Blazers from Massachusetts, and the Londenderry Bolts from New Hampshire in regular play. The semi-finals had them facing the New England Revolution Academy who they had scrimmaged in previous weeks and lost 2-1. The game was tied at the end of regular play 1-1 which sent the game immediately into penalty kicks. Bayside went on to give the New England Revolution Academy their biggest upset beating them in penalty kicks and sending the Academy back to Foxboro. The final game was against Nova Scotia who drove 11 hours to play in this tournament. Bayside went on to win 2-1 giving Bayside the Championship.

SCHOOL NEWS Phone-A-Thon Nets More Than $84,000 In Scholarships

East Providence – Calls to local residents in March for the nineteenth annual Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon were successful in raising funds for Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation (CSF) of East Providence.

The first $40,000 received was matched by the Carter Family Charitable Trust. The total amount of $84,134 received to date will be awarded as scholarships in June to East Providence students.

New scholarships and book awards were established through the phone-a-thon, including the Gardiner and Arlene Northup Scholarship and the David and Lynn Angell Memorial, Joseph Baglini Memorial, John Carnevale, Hon. Joy Hearn, M. Jeanne Mason and Dr. Isadore Ramos Book Awards.

Nearly 75 volunteers participated in the annual fundraising event. They included students from East Providence High School and college students who were past scholarship recipients and their families. East Providence High School alumni made calls to fellow classmates. Representatives of community groups and board members of CSF of East Providence joined in contacting thousands of East Providence residents.

Phone-a-thon Chairman Louise Paiva thanked local residents for their generosity. The local volunteer scholarship organization has conducted a phone-a-thon each spring since 1995. The amount of scholarships that has been awarded from phone-a-thon contributions totals more than half a million dollars. “We are grateful to East Providence residents for their continuing support of higher education for East Providence students,” she said.

“We appreciate the continuing support of Nordson EFD, an East Providence company,” she added. The phone-a-thon is held at their Catamore Boulevard facility and the company provides phone access, postage and refreshments for volunteers.

Contributions are still being accepted, although the deadline has passed for matching funds. Local residents who have not yet sent in their pledge or who did not receive a phone call can send their check payable to CSF of East Providence to P.O. Box 154438, East Providence, RI 02915. All contributions to CSF of East Providence are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

“I really enjoy helping out and giving back to the community,” noted Jenna.

Volunteers included Lisa Fitzpatrick and daughter Megan, a freshman at Roger Williams University. Megan’s brother Craig, a junior at Roger Williams, is also a recipient. “This is a wonderful group that provides invaluable scholarships to students,” states Lisa.

United Way Supports East Providence Student Learning

East Providence RI; Collaborative Summer Learning Program This summer East Providence will be the site of one of 16 programs across the state of Rhode Island addressing summer learning. Children can lose up to three months worth of learning during the summer month and may never catch up with their peers unless they have access to enriching activities, field trips and engaging projects during the summer school vacation. The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative is changing that in Rhode Island. Working through the Rhode Island Afterschool Plus Alliance (RIASPA) which is an education initiative of United Way of Rhode Island, the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative is in it’s second year having funded pilots at 11 sites last summer. East Providence will be one of five newly funded site this year. The program is 6 weeks long for 7 hours per day and located at the Pierce Field Complex and the Hennessey Elementary School. Start date is July 8th. Enrollment is open to all East Providence youth from age 6 through 15 and registration is through the Recreation Department. The program, featuring handson experiential learning throughout a traditional camp day, was created through a collaborative effort between the East Providence School department, the East Providence Recreation Department and the Newman YMCA. Other community organizations such as East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP), Books are Wings, the Public Library and the Boys and Girls Club will provide support.

The daily activities are designed with fun in mind while being tied to core curriculum standards. Certified teachers design and lead these activities along side camp counselors and teaching assistants. Special field trips and guest visitors are planned weekly.

RMS Students Take 1st In Stock Market Game

Students at Riverside Middle School played the Stock Market Game this past quarter. There were 110 teams at the middle school level, and the team of Candace Leonard, Nicole Morales, Benjamin Seamans, and Elliott Charron came in first place! It was very exciting to watch the team make financial decisions that propelled them to the top. On May 30th they are going to Salve Regina University to receive a prize and give a speech about this learning opportunity.

To put their accomplishment into even greater perspective, they came in 5th place among all 396 teams in the region that included university, high, middle, and elementary schools. RMS also had two teams that placed 5th and 11th in the middle school division.

Those team members were Kate Atwell, Austin Sutton, Breanna Poette, Charles Gomes, and Matt Cardoza, Caitlyn Tiodor, Greg Fasano, and Andrea Krumm respectively. The school is very proud of all of the students who participated in this stock market game experience.

Fifty-Nine Bay View Academy Students Excel On National Spanish Exam

East Providence, RI – Bay View Academy students recently learned of their success on the National Spanish Examination, earning a total of 59 medals and honorable mention citations. The students totaled four gold medals, nine silver, 14 bronze and 32 honorable mentions.

“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 156,000 students participating in 2013.”

Students from Bay View Academy have a history of high achievement on these exams. They are taught by Spanish teachers Elisabete Teixeira (Warren, RI) in the Middle School and Maria Abregú (East Greenwich, RI), Virginia Davis (Bristol, RI), Pamela Farmer (Bristol, RI) and Vera Keller (East Providence, RI) in the Upper School.

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades six through twelve, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

How You Can Help Tapin Ready For Summer!

Tapin, assisting East Bay area clients for nearly 30 years, is hoping to be ready for the warmer weather and vacation time for local families. The agency provides children’s clothing, household items such as bedding, towels, dishes, glassware, small appliances and furniture when it is able to do so to an increasingly needy public. Of course, fans and air conditioners are also frequently requested throughout the warm months. Donors are asked to please check that items are clean and in good working order with all necessary parts.

The emergency Food Closet may be accessed every 30 days, which doesn’t go very far when children are home for all meals during the summer. In addition to regular items, snacks and drinks are most often requested. Tapin is trying to provide more fresh food items this season as well, and would like to suggest to donors who have gardens that they might “plant one for Tapin” adding one extra vegetable plant just for donation. There have been a number of private gardeners over the past few years who have generously done this, and clients have been most appreciative.

Donations may be dropped off during regular office hours of 9 to noon, Mon thru Fri at the agency located in the lower level of the Library building on County Road in Barrington. Please call 247-1444 during those hours for any further information, or check the website: tapinri.com.

East Bay Community Action Vita Tax Program Seeks Motivated Volunteers

Are you interested in helping out in your community to prepare taxes free of charge?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a national program in its 40th year. As a Newport County (and other locations) VITA Volunteer you’ll provide free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families who need assistance. More than 50,000 people said YES! to volunteering during the 2013 filing season, preparing1.8 million returns nationwide. Locally, the East Bay Community Action Program prepared over 1000 returns during the last filing season, putting over two million dollars back into the pockets of taxpayers while promoting the Earned Income Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

How does this program work? If you say YES!, you’ll be assigned to work with the East Bay Community Action’s VITA Tax Team. Every volunteer receives TRAINING AND SUPPORT to begin volunteering at a VITA site located nearby. Training is offered both online and in the classroom. VITA Sites are located in community locations where the need is greatest, not in IRS offices. EBCAP Tax sites are open weekdays, one weeknight and weekends, and hours are flexible.

From the State House Amore ‘Thrilled’ About Historic Passage of Same-Sex Marriage

State House – While unable to take part in the final vote for the technical change in the same-sex marriage bills yesterday, Rep. Gregg Amore said he was thrilled to go down in history as one of the thousands of dedicated same-sex marriage advocates who made final passage a reality.

Representative Amore (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), cosponsor of the same-sex marriage legislation in the House, said he wished he could have voted on Thursday but was proud to have voted for marriage equality in the first House vote in January. The representative was not present at the final vote due to a previously scheduled commitment in Denver, where he is representing Rhode Island as an early learning fellow at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Early Learning Childhood Conference.

Aside from being a history teacher at East Providence High School, Representative Amore is also a strong advocate for improving early learning opportunities and has completed related work for his master’s degree. Additionally, he serves as a member of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare, where several early learning bills will be heard before the end of the legislative session.

“I have spoken on behalf of marriage equality on many occasions, and to see this finally pass while I am in office is such a wonderful privilege,” Representative Amore said. “As a history teacher, it is definitely an exciting feeling to actually be a part of history here in Rhode Island. Had the vote been close, I would have flown home early to cast my vote. Unfortunately, this conference was scheduled a long time before my colleagues and I knew when these bills would come back to the House for final passage. But I took comfort in knowing that a majority of my colleagues felt the same way I do about extending the rights of marriage to same-sex couples, so I chose to fulfill my duties as an early learning fellow during the vote on the technical change. I wish I could have been present for that historic moment when Governor Chafee signed the legislation among the hundreds of people who put their stories out in the open in order for this to become a reality. It has been clear to many of us that this day would come, and, like many others, I was elated to wake up this morning knowing it would truly be a better day in Rhode Island.”

Hearn Earns Spot on New England Board of Higher Education

State House – Rep. Joy Hearn (D-Dist. 66, Barrington, East Providence) has been appointed to the New England Board of Higher Education, which promotes greater educational opportunities and services for New England residents.

“I am honored to have been appointed to the board this year, as I have made education a priority,” Representative Hearn said. “I am passionate about education in Rhode Island and I believe we can learn a great deal from our neighboring states. Helping to assist in developing and designing the future of education is exciting.”

Speaker of the House Gordon D. Fox appointed Representative Hearn to be a delegate on behalf of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Eight delegates from each New England state are appointed to the board, representing the region’s leaders in education, business and government. The board also has a supporting staff of professionals who work with public and private partners throughout New England in order to strengthen relationships in the region and promote efficient use of educational resources.

More specifically, the board’s primary goals consist of engaging and assisting New England’s educational leaders in assessment, development and implementation of sound practices and policies.

By Angela Hall Beautiful June the gateway to summer! Spring flowers have bloomed. Gardens are planted. Farmers Markets are teeming with fresh herbs, veggies and fruits. One of my favorite fruits from this time of year are blueberries. I love blueberries! These sweet little treasures contain health benefiting soluble dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins, and pigment anti-oxidants that contribute immensely for optimum health and wellness.

Fresh blueberries are readily available in the markets all around the year due to imports from across the continents. However fresh wild berries are at their best from June until August when the harvest season begins in Michigan and Maine in USA and from Quebec province in Canada.

I grew up in Central New York along the Mohawk Valley, just outside of the Southern Adirondack Park, which was originally all part of the Mohawk Nation. There are literally hundreds of fresh water lakes to enjoy throughout the area. One such lake, a favorite place to canoe is Hinckley Lake located on the outskirts of the Adirondack Park. One could spend a lovely afternoon quietly gliding along the calm silky water enjoying birdsongs and fish jumping.

But the sweetest treat was the little island we “discovered” in that lake. These are what I call “Camping Islands” not much bigger than a nice campsite with shade trees and a little space to walk around. This one particular Island was filled with wild blueberries.

Beautiful perfectly ripe wild blueberries! It was like Nature saying, “You wanna see something really cool?” We hadn’t even gotten out of the canoe yet and we were picking them right from the shore.

Needless to say we lingered on this little Island for a while, devouring our lunch of wild blueberries, watching the sun dancing on the water and between the leaves of our shade trees.

Chefs and foodies alike will tell you of an experience with taste and scent that has left an indelible impression. I have a few. Yet that special experience of the day discovering wild blueberries will always stay with me. This was eatable art created by Earth, Nature and blessed by God. A beautiful gift.

Whether you use domestic or wild; blueberries are great raw, dried, or cooked. I have included a multiuse Fresh Blueberry Sauce, so easy and great to have on hand. I have also shared with you one of my favorite recipes, the Rustic Blueberry Tart with Cornmeal Crust. Cooking the berries at a low temperature for a longer time basically slow roasts the berries and they take on an elegant texture and flavor that makes this simple easy treat appropriate for any occasion.

FRESH BLUEBERRY SAUCE

1 cup water ¾ cup sugar 1 cup fresh blueberries 1 teaspoon butter 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg Combine 1 cup water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat; bring to a boil. Cook 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves, stirring constantly. Add blueberries and remaining ingredients to pan; return to boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook 4 minutes or until berries pop, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Use chilled over ice cream or pound cake or use warm over pancakes, waffles or French toast.

RUSTIC BLUEBERRY TART WITH CORNMEAL CRUST

Pastry: 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (about 7 ¾ ounces) 1/3 cup sugar ¼ cornmeal ¼ teaspoon salt 1/3 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces 1/3 cup fat-free buttermilk Filling: 5 cups blueberries ½ cup sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons fat-free milk 1 large egg white 1 ½ tablespoons turbinado sugar To prepare pastry, lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups, and level with a knife. Combine flour and next 3 ingredients (through salt) in a food processor; pulse two times. Add butter to flour mixture; pulse 4 to 5 times or until mixture resembles course meal.

With processor on slowly add buttermilk until dough forms a ball.

If you are making without the food processor; add mix dry ingredients, then cut in butter until mixture resembles course meal, mix in buttermilk until dough forms a ball, do not over mix. Gently press dough into a 4-inch circle plastic wrap; cover. Chill 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unwrap and place dough on a sheet of parchment paper. Roll dough into a 15-inch circle. Place dough and parchment on a baking sheet.

To prepare filling; combine berries and next 3 ingredients (through juice) in a medium bowl; toss gently to coat. Arrange berry mixture in center of dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Fold edges of dough toward center, pressing gently to seal (dough will only partially cover berry mixture).

Combine milk and egg white in a small bowl, stirring well with a whisk. Brush dough with milk mixture, sprinkle turbinado sugar evenly over dough. Bake for one hour or until pastry is golden brown. Let stand 30 minutes; cut into wedges. Top with whipped cream if you like.

Living Well RI Program

Six (6) week session ; Chronic Illness Self-Management Education Class Sessions will be for those with chronic conditions, and/or their caregivers. To date, the LWRI self-management education programs have proven to significantly help those with chronic conditions. Some of the topics that are covered are how to exercise and eat properly, how to use medications appropriately, how to solve everyday problems, and how to communicate effectively with family members and healthcare providers-all positive life skills to enhance one’s well-being. The outcome for the participants could be a reduction in pain, management of depression, control of fear and frustration, and a boost in self-confidence to manage their condition.

Although it would be of benefit to be involved in class discussions, it is important to note that class participants are not obligated to discuss personal issues or to exert themselves in any way. It is entirely up to the participants as to how involved they wish to be with class participation, contributing ideas, sharing personal stories, and providing input within the classes. It has been found that by attending the classes, even those who wouldn’t normally discuss certain issues, may do so if their peers are doing so.

Participants will receive “goodies” such as the book, relaxation CD, and especially the gift card has proven to be a popular incentive.

We hope to begin the class in June, please sign up in the Administration Office.

The group meets the fourth Thursday of each month.

Stroke Club 1:30pm - 3:00pm The Stroke Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month and provides entertainment, education, support, socialization, refreshments, and transportation for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

In-Sight Support 12:45pm 3:00pm

In-Sight offers programs and support in productive living for the vision impaired. The group meets the 3rd Friday of every month.

Senior Center Library

The library is a very warm and lovely place for people to choose a good book and read in a nice quiet area. We continue to receive many donations of new and current books. These donations have truly enhanced the quantity of our library. We also have current magazines for your enjoyment.

The book club meets on Monday afternoons. New club members are welcome.

General Services

Elder Information Specialist: Our Elder Information Specialist assists the elderly and their families in providing information /referral and assistance with accessing services and programs.

Nutrition Program: The center provides a nutritional meal to approximately 125 seniors per day. The Cranston Senior Center provides the meals.

Case Management / Senior Services: The center coordinates with East Bay Community Action Program Inc., for all casework and follow-ups. Protective Services Council, made up of city departments and mental health/social service agencies, meets monthly to discuss problems concerning the elderly.

Transportation: The center has two buses that are used daily for door-to-door transportation to and from the center.

Notary: This service is available in the Administration Office at no charge.

Seminars: Monthly social, educational, and financial seminars on topics relating to seniors.

Manicurist: A manicurist visits the center weekly for manicures and polish changes.

Gift Shop: The gift shop has many different items for the convenience of the seniors.

Small items from candy and greeting cards to jewelry, handmade items and crafts are available.

Anyone 60 years of age or older or handicapped.

Do i need to make a reservation?

Yes, at least 24 hours in advance and preferably the friday before the following week, check local meal site for time.

Must i pay for the meal if i am sick?

No! Please call your meal site in the morning if you have a reservation so the manager can call persons on the waiting list. You do not pay for a meal you do not eat.

Can i reserve a seat for my friends?

No! Seats cannot be reserved at any time. If you wish to sit with a friend you must arrive at the meal site at the same time.

How much must i pay for the meal?

The suggested donation is $3.00. Participants are requested to donate whatever they can toward the cost of the meal.

How much does the meal cost?

The actual cost of the meal is $5.00.

Where does the money come from to pay for this meal?

Ebcap is the grantee for the east bay and newport county areas for nutrition funds from the department of elderly affairs.

What is the donation used for?

Donations are used to increase the number of meals served, to facilitate access to the meals and provide other supportive services directly to nutrition services.

If i am a volunteer in the kitchen, do i pay for my meal?

Yes! Nutrition services volunteers, meal site managers, and staff, regardless of age, are considered to be eligible persons for purposes of receiving meals. These individuals should be given the same opportunity as any other participant to donate to the cost of the meal in accordance with usual donation procedures

If my son or daughter wants to be my guest, do they donate $3.00?

No! They also must pay the full cost of the meal $5.00 If under 60 years of age.

How do i make the donation?

Envelopes should be provided at each place setting and you may drop the envelope in a donation box provided at each site.

If i have a question about the nutrition program, who can i ask?

Each meal site has a manager and/or senior center director in charge of the daily meal program.

Can i take food home if i don’t finish my meal?

No, this is not permitted at all! This is for your safety. It is highly recommended that no food leaves the meal site. A bacterium sets in food very quickly if not maintained at an appropriate temperature and stored in a proper container. Remember, food does not have to taste bad, to be bad.

United Methodist Elder Care Tees Off To Provide A Safe And Affordable Housing To RI Seniors

May 2013 (East Providence, RI)—United Methodist Elder Care will host its 5th Annual Charity Golf Classic on Monday, June 24, 2013 at Alpine Country Club, Cranston, RI. Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Methodist Elder Care Communities.

The tournament will kick off with registration at 6:45 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. This year’s tournament will be held in memory of Theodore (Ted) R. Stearns, loving United Methodist Elder Care resident and golf tournament committee member who passed away in February. Following the tournament, an awards and recognition luncheon will be held. Event highlights include contest holes, raffle and silent auction and the Nike Mobile Pro Golf Shop.

Organizers are seeking both event sponsors and program book advertisers to support the golf classic event. Sponsorships are available at many different levels and offer local businesses great exposure and marketing, an opportunity to participate in the tournament at different levels and the chance to support a great cause. Summer Fun Guide Mount Hope Farmers Market Summer Season Kickoff!

Bristol, RI, 5/16/13 — On Saturday May 25th, The Mount Hope Year-round Farmers Market kicked off its summer season, and celebrated its move outdoors. The market will continue every Saturday, rain or shine, through October 26th, and will be set up right along Metacom Ave/Rte 136, in the South Pasture of the historic Mount Hope Farm in Bristol, RI. It's time for Summer Sun & Fun Summer Schedule for Save The Bay Lighthouse Tours

The summer 2013 schedule for the annual lighthouse tours from Save The Bay has been set. The days are: Sat. June 15, Sat, July 13, and Sat Sept 28.

The tour on Narragansett Bay will include views of 16 lighthouses and 5 lost lighthouse sites. The fee is $100.00 and includes a visit to Rose Island Lighthouse and a bagged lunch. Rhode Island’s Ballet Theatre Audition

The next audition for” Rhode Island’s ballet theatre” will be on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 6:30pm at the studio of RI Ballet Arts Academy at 7728 Post Road in North Kingstown. We are looking for serious dance students who would like to excel in dance performance. Ages 9 to 18.

The Writers’ Circle is proud to premiere its new magazine Authors’ Page at www.riwriterscircle.com with “Words of Wisdom” by Jon Land, Ann Hood, Tom Chandler and Michael Fink. Featured poets are Rick Benjamin, RI Poet Laureate, with poets Dr. Jack Coulehan and Robert Lipgar, both from NY, and Noel Patoine of Vermont. Stunning color and designs in vibrant green, ebony black and golden fields compliment bold story telling by Rhode Island writers, Ana Flores, Susan Bergeron, David Howard and Rose Pearson, founder of The Writers’ Circle.
