East Providence News Briefs By Bob Rodericks

City Manager to Hire “Social Networker”

Acting City Manager, Paul Lemont has been authorized (unofficially) by the city council to hire a $35 to $40,000 per year social media position to help “show people the good things we are doing here.” City Chief Information Officer, Kelly Ahrens told the city council in August that “...our website is outdated and not modern. We (the city) don’t post anything that’s going on. Our web site has no content,” Ahrens continued. Ahrens said that the city is rolling out a new web site which will help get the city into the “next era.” “We need a social media position in place to disclose city issues and help people find information easier,” she added. Ahrens and the council plan on doing this by hiring a person to conduct social networking. “This will help with economic development. People and businesses find out about our city by what’s on our web pages,” said Ahrens. “We need to promote ourselves and have on line contacts with developers. This is how people find out about us, by twitter, Facebook, mobile apps, it’s the 21st century,” said Ahrens. Ward 4 council member Chrissy Rossi made a motion, seconded by Ward 3 councilman Tom Rose, to have the city manager advertise and hire a person. However, Mayor Jim Briden preferred to have the legal department check out the process first and balked at a council vote. “This should be subject to review of the legal department,” said Briden. “I would like my motion to stand and be voted on,” insisted Rossi but Lemont interjected and said he would get it done. “You don’t need a vote,” said Lemont. “I’ll just hire someone and get it done. You have my word,” he told Rossi and the other councilors. Indeed the city posted a notice on its’ web page for an ‘Online Content Developer’ with a salary range of $36,000 - $43,000. The new employee will work “under the general supervision of the Chief Information Officer of the IT Division and create and posts content for the City of East Providence’s website and social media endeavors...” The job description can be found in its’ entirety on the city’s web site http://www.eastprovidence.com.

School Department Also Hiring

The school department has shifted some personnel and hired people in a few administrative changes. Former Riverside Middle school principal, Stephen Prew, will

be the Director of a new program called the Accelerated Learning Community (ALC) based at East Providence High School. The program will work with a small number of students deemed at-risk for school failure. This new program is designed to improve graduation rates, affected significantly by the system’s drop-out rate, according to school committee chairman Joel Monteiro. “While our students’ test scores continue to do well, the graduation rate hurts our ranking with RIDE, and we would like to improve this. More importantly, we would like to see these students stay in school so that they can have more options in their future,” said Monteiro. Prew will be assisted by Mr. David Britto. Britto is a former long time elementary school principal in the district who is returning from a sabbatical leave. “This will take some flexibility and drive from these two individuals to administer a successful program,” added Monteiro. The city’s two middle schools, Martin and Riverside, will be facing some demographic and personnel changes also. “Our middle schools are now back to similar district lines as in the past, allowing us to have more students stay in their neighborhoods, and stay with their classmates,” said Chairman Monteiro. “This is a work in progress, but I’m hopeful that we will gradually get things in the best possible alignment. There is no perfect solution, but we can work to achieve the most feasible,” he said. There will be some administrative shuffling also. Dr. Cheri Guerra, formerly the Assistant Principle at Martin Middle School, is not the Principal at Riverside Middle School. Mrs. Elaine Allen, formerly the Principal at Oldham Elementary, is not the Assistant Principal at Martin. “Both of these professionals have had positive impacts on our children, and we expect to see more good things from them in their new roles,” said Monteiro. Orlo and Oldham elementary schools will also see new leadership. Mrs. Yanaiza Gallant is the newly hired principal at Orlo, replacing long time city principal Cheryl Gibbs. Mrs. Donna Peluso is the new Oldham school principal. “Both of these schools and communities have shown great spirit in the past, and have opened their arms to welcome these two new school leaders. We all look forward to seeing great things continue to come out of these schools as well,” added Monteiro. The adding of new principals while retaining administrators Prew, Britto and Gibbs would appear to add to the admin-

istrative budget. It is not clear if positions were posted and advertised with interviews or if appointments were made without doing so. “All of this has happened in a fairly short period of time, while construction projects continue to go on. As I stated, there have many things that we will all be adjusting to. In my opinion, this is very good. Progress begins with movement. We need to maintain our momentum, stay agile, flexible, and persistent to achieve our goals,” said Chairman Monteiro in an interview with the Reporter. “So with your support, the School Committee is excited to kick off another school year, and is committed to doing our very best on behalf of our students and tax payers. We appreciate the suggestions and feedback along the way. If the children are supported at home, and then at school, they will be poised for success,” added Monteiro.

secret that he would like the job on a permanent basis. That was back in November of 2013. Lemont had previously served as manager for 14 years before not being renewed. “I’m looking forward to getting this city back in shape,” Lemont told the city council some 10-11 months ago. He will be here a little longer. At the recent August meeting, a frequent lemon critic, councilor Chrissy Rossi, Ward 4, made a motion to abandon any search for a new city manager until after the November election. “I would like to see us wait this out and let the new council decide on who they want for city manager,” said Rossi. “It’s not fair to strap a new council with someone they didn’t vote for,” Rossi added. “I think it would be best to wait. We are approaching the end of the year and budget time and we should not pursue recruitment (for a new city manager) at this time,” said outgoing Mayor Jim Briden. The council unanimously voted to “discontinue” any search plans for a new manager and keep Lemont for now.

Football Legend “Beansie” Honored by Council

William Stringfellow, the Rhode Island and East Providence football icon, was honored by the city council in August by having the football press box named for him and his wife, Sheila. Unknown to legions of younger Townie sports fans, Bill Stringfellow was regularly known by his nickname, “Beansie”. Stringfellow taught in East Providence for 36 years and became a legendary football coach and athletic director. He has received numerous awards throughout the state and is a member of the East Providence High School Hall of Fame, the R.I. Football coaches Hall of Fame, the GridIron Hall of Fame and the Hendricken Hall of Fame. He graduated from EPHS in 1945, playing football and wrestling as well as a Townie band member. Stringfellow is an Army veteran and began teaching at Central Junior High (now Martin). Known as an old-school tough guy coach, he was beloved by his students and players. He was East Providence’s first city recreation director, in a part time post for some 14 years. When he retired from EPHS, he was hired by Hendricken to coach freshmen football for 10 years. However, whenever EP is playing football, one will always find him, along with the Stringfellow clan, sitting in the EP home stands in the same seats every year. To this day the tradition continues of former football players stopping by the Stringfellow home for some of Sheila’s apple pie on Thanksgiving Day before the big game. Bill and Sheila Stringfellow have 7 children and 23 grandchildren. The press box will be officially dedicated to the Stringfellows during an upcoming October football game.

OddFellows in East Providence?

The building has been vacant for a while (it is believed that all indigent odd-fellows are gone) and there are gaping wall and ceiling holes throughout. The council hasn’t totally dismissed the idea yet of looking for a buyer or developer. Ward 2 councilman Helder Cunha wondered about offering an interested party tax credits to restore the historical building. “Are there other answers, can we advertise,” asked Cunha. Stay tuned to this odd situation.

School Committee Report Ferreira Not Happy

Oddfellows home on Warren Avenue. It may seem obvious that there would be no shortage of odd fellows or odd persons in the city if one were to seek nominations for such. But guffaws aside, there really is a facility in the city for the former purpose of housing “indigent odd fellows.” According to the RI Historical Society, The Odd Fellows’ Home Association of Rhode Island was founded in 1903 to manage a retirement home for indigent Odd Fellows. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows didn’t cut corners when they built a new meeting hall to accommodate their growing brotherhood in the 1880s. They hired leading Providence architectural firm Gould & Angell to design the new building in the then-fashionable Shingle style and gave it an ample 8,300 square feet of interior space. For a location they chose the bustling center of 19th-century East Providence, the riverfront western end of Warren Avenue known as Watchemoket Square. The building at 63-65 Warren Ave. would serve as the Odd Fellows’ Rhode Island headquarters for 82 years, but eventually the influence of both the fraternal organization and their neighborhood would wane. By the 1960s, American culture had changed and the construction of Interstate 195 had leveled half of Watchemoket Square, leaving the remainder a backwater under the shadow of highway ramps (Providence Business News Archives, Wikopedia). Built in 1889 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Odd Fellows Hall is valued at $179,500, according to assessor records. One problem - it’s falling apart. City Manager told the council that the roof leaks so bad that “workers can’t and won’t get up there to fix it”. “It’s getting worse by the day,” said Lemont who showed little interest in spending money to fix it. “The entire renovation, to bring the place up to code, could cost as much as $2M,” said Lemont. “In the meantime we are fixing an overhang roof at the high school entrance, the library roof, Pierce Field pressbox (baseball) which is rotting, and other needy projects,” outlined Lemont.

School committee member, Anthony Ferreira gives an update on school issues every month to the city council. Ferreira was unhappy in August. Ferreira gave a rambling and wide range critique of unmet school department deadlines as he saw them. “You (city council) had some good news, I don’t know what happened on our side,” Ferreira jibed. “750 kids can’t play soccer because we didn’t do the fields behind the high school. AYSO needs fields. We tore down old tennis courts 14 months ago to make soccer fields, but it didn’t happen. We dropped the ball on soccer,” Ferreira said. “We have traffic problems at Orlo. I’ve never been contacted on what the answer is. Also chalk boards were to become dry erase boards. We never heard. Oh and the Science lab will not open on time at the high school. Will someone ask the Superintendent what is going on?” Ferreira said. Tom Rose and Helder Cunha said that soccer field needs are being addresses most likely at the Kent Field athletic park and area as well as other locations including the high school. School committee chairman, Joel Monteiro believes that the science lab will be done in time. “We’re close and are just waiting to hear soon. It was a major rehab job and will be a great asset.”

EP Water bill

Well my new combined water/sewer bill from the City of East Providence has arrived, And just as I had warned in previous letters, the water portion has more than doubled from what it would have been prior to the latest rate increase authorized by out City Council. Under the old rate my water bill would have been $31.66. Under the new rates, described by our City Manager as a “moderate increase”, it is $66.47. That is more than double what it would have been. “Moderate increase” you say?? I think not. I am afraid that many water users may miss this because the water bill is included with the already exorbitant sewer bill, so the water increase might easily be overlooked. Pay attention City of East Providence residents. Look at your latest “Utility Bill” from the City and compare the water charges only. You have been had. Complain to your City Council. Robert Amman East Providence, RI 02914

Why Go Backwards?

As voters in the City of East Providence, we find it appalling that there would be any consideration to having Pawtucket water as our mainstay for water supply.. To think that finances should play a role in the water quality and quality of everyday life is ridiculous. The water we consume, from toddlers to the elderly, is essential to our well-being. Health care tells us to consume eight glasses of water a day. Are we to ingest this inferior water at the risk of our health? The water supply we have now is excellent. Why go backwards? We would certainly not support anyone who would stand by and allow this plan to move forward. Michaela Burke Rumford, RI 02916

I have been truly inspired by my husband, Ward 4 Candidate Brian Faria. He has been very concerned for his ward and we have been working very hard to get his message out. I support him because he keeps telling me, “This campaign is not about me. It’s about all of us.” Now is such an important time for our city. Some in our Democratic Committee will continue to cause division. For them, division is the key. They would love to keep us “in the dark developing film.” Don’t feel that that is a safer place to be. It never proves to be. NOW is the time for all the wards to unite in a very strong way. Don’t be discouraged. Anything worth something will always produce a good fight. It only means that there is a good message to be heard, that some would prefer for you not to hear. We want to thank those that have continued to support his message. We are Strong Riverside!! Some candidates don’t feel that they need to do the work for themselves. They feel they are above the people. Some haven’t even acquired their own signatures to get on the ballot. It actually undermines the people. Who will their allegiance be to, I wonder. Surely, there will be favors to pay back, most likely at our expense. There are some wonderful candidates running in our other wards. It would be a honor to see my husband working along-side them to improve our city. It definitely takes courage and maturity to stand above all the inside “strong-arm” mayor politics that we are facing. I have cringed to think that it would be a possibility that certain candidates might have the opportunity to be in a strong mayoral position, when they have exhibited such a low level of that maturity. We are quite capable of making the right decisions. That’s why you must invoke what you want with your VOTING voices. That’s where the power is yours. Who will work for you? Who do you trust that can build a strong relationship with the elected council to unite our city? Who do you believe in? Don’t fall for the illusions from those that talk each other proud, where they have created the ruse that your opinion really matters. They would love to keep you disconnected from the reality of it. Let our unity be their new reality. Unfortunately, they just want their power in the control seat. Step out of the darkroom, pay close attention, and VOTE in the upcoming primary, Sept. 9th. Sincerely, Melissa Faria Riverside R.I.

‘Opportunity Knocks’: Volunteering to Help People By Bob Rodericks

through Opportunity Knocks. It was the first official “mission” of the group and it was a huge success. The Solitro effort intended to surprise the Brown family with clothes and toys for little Maddox. On August 16th, the gifts were delivered to Maddox Brown and his family. It was an overwhelming joy to deliver the Brown family a little piece of generosity as they begin to put their lives back together. This was such a very special first mission for OpportUNITY Knocks and we couldn’t have done it without the help of everyone out there,” said a very happy and emotional Mike Solitro. One of Solitro’s more poignant moments came

More and more Townies have stepped to the plate to help their fellow citizens in need. The Reporter has chronicled John Carnevale, Kevin Robinson (KRob), Carl Sweeney (Faith & Hope Charities) and others for their unselfish acts of charity. There is also East Providence teacher and coach Michael Solitro and his “Opportunity Knocks” non-profit charity. Solitro and Joseph DeRita, along with others have newly formed this charity to help those like three year old Maddox Brown. “This handsome three year old, and his beautiful family have lost everything due to a recent fire in their Fall River home. We are asking all of you to take this OpportUNITY to help this young boy and his family,” asked Solitro

when he asked his own young daughter to give up one of her own toys for Maddox. “After (playfully) trying three times to persuade me to take her brother’s toys, she finally reached in her toy box and gave up her Elmo doll that she has had since she was one. It was an emotional moment for me,” said Solitro. In speaking to the volunteers Solitro expressed thanks for their efforts. “You took the OpportUNITY to change this little boy’s life, and Joe and I thank you for allowing us to be a part of it. Also thanks to everyone on the team, including Andre Vafiadis and Millenium Landscaping for bringing such positive and enthusiastic energy.” Townie Pride seems to grow every day in East Providence. Opportunity Knocks has a Facebook page for people to follow their efforts.

The Peoples Candidate

Brian Faria

Opportunity Knocks volunteers deliver surprise to Maddox Brown, victim of house fire.

I would like to share that it has been an inspiring experience meeting so many of you face to face, from the tip of Riverside to the Terrace, in my journey for councilman. I first decided to run to represent the entire community of Riverside. Also, important in this decision, I felt that by running, it insured that there would be, in fact, an election for our community to participate in. This would, in turn, force the candidates to participate, instead of making "back door deals for seats". Although I am running as a democrat, I'm running without any endorsements, political ties, or invested interests. Aside from a few donations from friends and families, I have personally funded my campaign. My allegiances are solely to the people of ward 4. This is not about me, it's about all of us. I've noticed in past years, that most candidates that run for public office, speak in generalities. Well, we all know what the problems really are in ward 4. There is no generality to speak of. We need to address the problem at hand, before we can look beyond the horizon. The political agenda has to cease and desist. We need to come together, unite as one, and as candidates, we must stop worrying about the power and our own self ambitions. Some have gotten so caught up in their own imaginings, they feel they are above the people, clearly undermining your vote. It's time to bring a sense of community back to Riverside. That position could only stand firmly on the fact that we are united to do so. It may only be possible to change some things one step at a time, but this would be giant leap as far as representing unity. The attacks from the opposition to unity are proof that they believe we can achieve it. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the patience and efforts that I have received from my family for this upcoming primary. We have two daughters, Mia, who just turned ten, and Rachelle who is left for college. Both have sacrificed their summer to help with this campaign, walking and knocking on doors along-side their father, bringing me much support. Also, my wife, Melissa has been a sure strength and continual encouragement. I am a firm believer that behind every good man is a strong woman. My family compels me to help our present community to make it better for the future community. I humbly ask for your consideration September 9, 2014. Brian Faria Candidate Ward 4, City Council

East Providence Prevention Coalition

Responsible Beverage Service Trainings Offered Locally The East Providence Prevention Coalition (EPPC) has trained over 350 participants locally, in the 21 Proof Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) curriculum. 21 Proof is an evidence based, state approved Responsible Beverage Service Training for anyone who serves alcoholic beverages in a pouring or non-pouring establishment. All staff including cashiers, wait staff, door personnel, valet staff and owners/mangers must be RBS Certified through a four-hour training, and recertified every three years, according to RI state law and/or East Providence ordinance. Upon being hired, the server/seller has 60 days to be certified. In an attempt to offer this training locally and affordably, the EPPC is hosting three RBS trainings in the next year at a nominal fee of $25 per participant. All trainings take place at East Providence City Hall, located at 145 Taunton Avenue, East Providence RI, in room 306 from 9:00am-1:00pm. Training dates are as follows: Tuesday September 23, 2014 Tuesday February 10, 2015 Tuesday June 2, 2015 During the 21 Proof RBS training, staff will learn identification checking, laws, assessing customer intoxication levels, skills for handling customers and refusing sales. Upon successful completion, staff will receive training manuals and required certification. Participants do not have to be East Providence residents, however they do have to work or want to work in a Rhode Island establishment. For more information or to sign up for a training contact the EPPC at 401-435-1923 or email jwall@cityofeastprov.com.

FALL NEEDS FOR TAPIN

TAPIN (Touch A Person In Need) serving clients in the East Bay area is currently trying to fill the need for back-to-school clothing and backpacks. New or gently worn seasonally appropriate clothing up to size 16 will be very welcome. New socks and underwear would be a special help to clients whose budgets are already stretched thin. Due to space constriction donors are asked to please hold on to winter clothes for another month or so. Both children and their parents always look forward to backpacks and supplies for them. In the past we have had some generous donors who have helped, but it would be wonderful to have to more to give out. Another very helpful way to contribute to the back-to-school program would be with the donation of snacks and juice boxes. Once again, the housewares closet is in need of sheets in all sizes, but particularly full/queen and king. The towel shelves are empty except for a few hand size. TAPIN is located in the lower level of the Library building on County Rd in Barrington. Donations may be dropped off from 9 to noon, Mon thru Fri or please call 247-1444 during those hours for further information or check the website: tapinri.com.

Former Superintendent John DeGoes Dies Unexpectedly Townies Shocked and Saddened by Bob Rodericks

John V. DeGoes, 77, former East Providence schools superintendent died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014. DeGoes, previously of Pawtucket, lived in East Providence for the past 25 years. DeGoes had an extensive background in Rhode Island education. He began his career as a History teacher in Central Falls. He then taught at Cumberland High School, serving as Assistant PrinJohn DeGoes cipal from 1974-83. DeGoes was selected Superintendent of Schools in Central Falls from 1983-87 and Superintendent in East Providence from 1987-94. DeGoes was selected as Rhode Island Superintendent of the Year in 1991. From 1994 to 2004, he served as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in North Attleboro, serving as the Interim Supt. in 1996. He has served as the President of the R.I. Association of School Superintendents and President of the New England Association of School Superintendents. He returned to East Providence as Interim Superintendent for 2012 and 2013. DeGoes succeeded the popular Myron J. Francis upon Francis’ retirement in 1987. DeGoes quickly became a well respected educator and he moved to East Providence at that time. DeGoes was known as a quiet but very effective and fair educator. When East Providence removed controversial superintendent Mario Cirillo and his right hand man, COO Lonnie Barham, the city was in some turmoil. Former school board chairman Charles Tsonos told the state budget commission that he wanted John DeGoes to come back as EP Superintendent. After some reluctance, the commission agreed to DeGoes. “It was the best decision we made,” said Tsonos. “John DeGoes settled things down and we got our finances back under control. I wish he could have stayed longer,” said a saddened Tsonos after hearing of DeGoes’ passing. Many East Providence teachers and school staff were stunned when they learned of the DeGoes death. It was clear that John DeGoes made a positive impact in the history of East Providence. DeGoes was a prodigious scholar athlete and coach, winning the Max Lebida trophy in 1955 and being inducted into the Cumberland and Central Falls Sports Halls of Fame. He coached basketball and baseball, leading Cumberland High to the 1968 state baseball championship. He served in the R.I. Air National Guard for 7 years and for the Air Force during the Berlin crisis from 1962-63. DeGoes was also a Councilman-at-Large in Pawtucket from 1974-81. He served on the Board of Directors for Navigant Credit Union from 1998-2008 and as Chairman of the Board of Navigant from 2007-08. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Blackstone Academy Charter School from 2008 to his passing. DeGoes is survived by his wife, Jeanne, of 53 years. He leaves four children and eleven grandchildren. Jessica DeGoes O’Rourke, a graduate of EPHS expressed her thanks to the EP community. “My most sincere & heartfelt thanks to all for the love and support shown to me and my family over the last few days... There is no way to truly express the deep sorrow we are feeling with the very sudden loss of our amazing dad, husband & grandfather - but our family is strong and we will get through this together. Thank you again for all the love, prayers and kind messages you have sent... They are genuinely appreciated.” Donations in DeGoes name may be made to the Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation of East Providence, P.O. Box 154438, East Providence, R.I., 02915.

Oldham was an extremely large school, growing in size and drawing pupils from a wide range of socio economic backgrounds. Richardson took an active role in educational leadership as she participated in many school improvement curriculum efforts. She also has successfully written many educational grants intended to enhance the professional growth of area Judith Richardson teachers. Richardson was also asked to take the principalship of the Orlo Avenue School in the city. As a respected school principal she sought and encouraged parental involvement in all schools. Richardson’s Principal’s Advisory Group was considered a model for the system. Richardson began her career in East Providence as a Kindergarten student and retired after a stellar 30 year teaching and administrative career. After retiring, she was asked to become a Principal in Somerset, Massachusetts. For the next 12 years Richardson was at the helm of the Chace Street School. When she retired ‘again’ in 2011, she was highly praised: “It’s a tremendous loss for the school district,” Somerset School Superintendent Richard Medeiros said. “She is a tremendous educational leader.” During her time at the Chace Street School, an extended preschool program was started, there have been continuous changes in the school’s education curriculum, an increase in the use of technology and a growth in the understanding of individual needs with emotional social needs. Stephanie Vinhateiro was an honors student at EPHS. She belonged to the Future Teachers of America, the French Club and various senior class committees. She was active in intramural athletics. After graduating from Rhode Island College she began a 34 year career of teaching in East Providence. She was known as one of the city’s most energetic teachers and volunteers. Parents annually requested that Stephanie Vinhateiro. their children be assigned to “Mrs. V’s” classroom. She became a Head Teacher which involved additional supervisory responsibilities. “As the principal in the school where Stephanie was head teacher, I witnessed firsthand her keen decision making capacity. She revealed an analytical perceptive quality to issues requiring an immediate action,” said former Principal Stanley Traverse. Vinhateiro was also known for classroom lessons which were founded on active participation and inquiry. “Students were never bored in her classrooms.” In addition to her daily teaching responsibilities, Vinhateiro volunteered her time to direct school plays and musicals. An annual holiday musical called “Cool Yule” was performed by students from area schools under her direction. In retirement, Vinhateiro continues to volunteer countless time to the community. She has been a very active member of the Citizens Scholarship Foundation, the group helping to renovate the high school gymnasium, and the Friends of Townie Athletics (FTA). The FTA provides dinners and championship awards for winning school athletic teams. She was also very active in groups such as the Rumford Junior and Wampanoag Women’s Clubs, and helps to fundraise for AYSO and volunteers at area nursing homes. Vinhateiro is also a member of the Providence College faculty and a supervisor of PC student teachers. continued on next page...

Rhode Island high school bands. As the marching band delighted Townie crowds at football games, Pavao added flag corps, a rifle guard, baton twirlers and a color guard. Saturday mornings and soon Friday evenings at Pierce Stadium was the place to be. Just as Dr. Farnum’s bands did, the Pavao bands competed in and won many all state awards throughout New England. John Pavao was important to the high school through changing times. With double sessions, there were two bands, etc. He actually repaired and built instruments when the city couldn’t afford it. Pavao bands at Memorial Day Parades, the city’s bicentennial program, new city hall dedication, new school construction and the Townie Pride Parade of 1984. After 28 years at EPHS, Pavao was an alternative career counselor at Bristol County Agricultural High. He was Gender Equity Project Director, Recruiter and Public Relations Director. He also was an interim director for the Cumberland Lincoln Community Chorus and arranged music for Sacred Heart Church in EP and other area churches. “Through Mr. Pavao, came a love for music that stays with me forever,” is a sentiment echoed by many of Pavao’s former students. John Caruolo, class of 2009, is an automatic EPHS inductee due to his selection as a Providence Journal Honor Roll student athlete upon high school graduation. The prestigious Journal Honor Roll Boy and Girl awards honors the top senior male and female student-athletes in Rhode Island. It is one of the oldest continual programs in the country honoring outstanding athletic and academic achievement by high school students. From all the nominations, one male and John Caruolo one female will be selected as the 2014 Honor Roll Boy and Honor Roll Girl. Caruolo was the top male student-athlete in Rhode Island for 2009. He was a multi sport star and a R.I. and National Honor Society member. He was selected as a National Football Foundation Golden Dozen Scholar Athlete member. East Providence High School and LaSalle have the most honor roll recipients in the state with 8 each. Prior EP recipients are: 1927-Fred Mulvey, 1940-Charles Bentley, 1948-Richard Collins, 1951-William Schifino, 1981-Timothy Army, 1982-Theresa Moore, 2008-Nathan Lovett and 2009-John Caruolo. The Hall of Fame Committee invites everyone to help honor these 2014 inductees by attending this year’s ceremony. Any EPHS graduate is welcomed to join the Hall of Fame Committee. Mr. Freitas is an alumnus of the Boys & Girls Club of East Providence, where he fondly remembers playing pool in the games room. “I have always been a part of the Boys & Girls Club,” explained Mr. Freitas, “I attended the Club as a child and now my two daughters go there. When I heard about the breakfast program, where they serve breakfast to children before school, it seemed like a perfect way to give back by collecting cereal to support the program.” The Boys & Girls Club transports approximately 70 children each day to local schools, opening for drop off at 6:30 in the morning. Many of these children eat breakfast at the Club before heading off to school in the morning. “We began serving breakfast in 2012,” said Erin Gilliatt, Executive Director. “Between our early hours and the later start to the school day in East Providence, many children were with us for more than two hours every morning. Making sure everyone got breakfast before heading off to school is one way we can ensure that our members are getting arriving at school ready to learn.” In addition to the breakfast, the Club also partners with the RI Community Food Bank

Boys & Girls Club of East Providence Receives Major Grant to Open New After School Program at Hennessey School

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I., June 10, 2014 – The Boys & Girls Club of East Providence is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant of more than $165,000 to open a new after school program at the Agnes B. Hennessey School. Funded through the 21st Century Learning Center programs, the expanded “Hennessey Scholar Camp” will operate daily before and after school and will include academic support as well as a wide range of other education, arts, leadership, and fitness activities. The only cost for participation for Hennessey students will be a nominal registration fee of $20, which will also include a one-year membership to the Boys & Girls Club. “We are so excited to be able to offer these programs to the Hennessey students,” said Erin Gilliatt, Executive Director. “This new initiative is truly a partnership between the Club and the school faculty and staff which ensure that the activities included in the afterschool hours fully support what the children are doing in the classrooms.” The Hennessey Scholar Camp, which hopes to serve 175 Hennessey students next year, will open on the first day of school and will operate year-round including school vacations. The Club and school will be gathering feedback from Hennessey families to determine which activities to include in the curriculum, with options being everything from music and art lessons to Lego engineering and sports activities. Hennessey parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the program as a part of the end of school celebrations on June 24th, when they will also have the chance to weigh in on the options for activities. Registration for the program will begin July 14th. Hosted by East Providence Historical Society Leaves from Gilmore’s Flower Shop, 76 Taunton Avenue (corner of Taunton and Walnut Streets) This area was generally platted in the 1880’s, a perfect time for the Queen Anne style in grand or cottage versions. There are still many examples of this whimsical style on these streets, built by professionals and business owners who wanted to show they had made their mark. The high bank of the Seekonk River was a perfect place to settle with The Square handy for shopping, commerce and entertainment. SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS Rhode Island Inferno wins 2014 Class B 14u State Championship

Top Row (L to R): Alyssa Guarino, Allie Forand, Jordan Farnsworth, Sophie Marchese, Rae’vyn Watson, Jessica Potter, Ashleigh Wyrostek, Taylor Babcock, Haley Ramer Kneeling (L to R): Ashlyn Messier, L.A. Villarica Not in photograph: Coaches: Stephen Babcock, Mike Farnsworth, Shane Messier, Scott Potter and Barry Ramer The East Providence based “Rhode Island Inferno” won the 2014 Class B 14u State Championship this year for girls fastpitch softball. The state championship is a week long tournament which culminates with a double elimination bracket on Saturday and Sunday. Inferno had a dominating undefeated performance in bracket play with victories over Apponaug Black, East Bay Lady Bulldogs, CLCF Bombers and a final win versus Cranston Ravens Gold. RI Inferno was formed 3 years ago. This growing program started with a 12u team only. Currently, the organization has a 10u, 12u and 14u and will be adding a 16u team for the 2015 season. Proud to be a third generation East Providence resident, Coach Shane Messier is excited to see such success with softball in his hometown. “It all started in little league with the 9-10 and 11-12 All-Stars winning four district championships in the past 3 years. With our success, we decided to enter a more competitive level of softball. Like most teams, we took our lumps in the beginning but I would have no reservations saying RI Inferno can compete with any other team in the state. We have proven that in our local tournaments as well as traveling to Hershey, PA. Both the 12u and 14u represented RI well against some of the best ‘’B” teams in the Northeast. Not only do we have great athletes, we have a great group of young women representing this organization,” says Coach Messier. For any information regarding RI Inferno you can visit their website http://www.riinferno.com/.

Sports Briefs By Bob Rodericks

New Era for Townie Football

For the first time in over 20 years, East Providence High School Football will not have head coach John Sandy Gorham on the sidelines. In fact, Gorham was a fixture at EP’s Pierce Stadium back in Junior High and eventually as a 1970 graduate of the high school. Gorham was a standout swimmer and football player while at East Providence High. Gorham was part of two state championship football teams while a student and eventually became the Townies head coach in 1993. All he did after that was set a school record for the most state championships under his tutelage. Gorham’s Townies went to 7 Super Bowls and won 5 of them. Prior to coaching at East Providence, Gorham was head coach at Barrington High where his teams there won 2 Super Bowls. Gorham was also a winning coach for softball and swimming and has won numerous state awards including induction into the EPHS Hall of Fame, the RI Aquatic Hall of Fame, the RI Football Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Providence Gridiron Hall of Fame. He was RI Coach of the Year in four different years and the RI male coach of the year twice. Gorham recently received a distinguished faculty award from the National Honor Society. “It’s time for me to move on,” said Gorham. “I think I’ve done all I can do for the program and it may be time for a younger voice to take over. I’ve enjoyed my time coaching football for the same high school I attended and played for. I would now like the chance

to help coach my youngest son who is entering Barrington Middle School where we now live,” added Gorham. “I’ve coached many great players at EPHS and I will never forget them. Many have come to see me or have congratulated me and wished me well in retirement from coaching. I am a true Townie. Once a Townie always a Townie,” said an emotional Sandy Gorham. Gorham is hanging up his football spikes at EPHS but will remain a physical education teacher at the school. Succeeding Gorham as head coach is another Townie alumn, Jay Monteiro. Monteiro played for the Townies and was an assistant coach for EP for some 15 years before moving to coach college football at Bryant University for several years. “I’ve coached under Sandy and we work together in the high school. I respect what he has done for the school and wish him well. I hope to continue and build upon his prior success here,” said Monteiro. Monteiro and his coaching staff will have their work cut out for them as the Townies have struggled the past few seasons. “We’ll get there,” said a smiling new head coach.

Riverside Post 10 Baseball Wins

For the second consecutive year the Riverside Post 10 American Legion baseball team won the state championship. Post 10 defeated Warwick for the state title. Post 10 is made up of several players from the East Providence High School Div. II state champions this year. Many of the same names from the Townies squat were key players in the Legion title run. Names like Mike Allienello, Kyle Marquis, Kam Gianlorenzo, Tyler Lockard, Colin Costa, Josiah Hatch and Aron Duarte are some of the standouts for Riverside Legion. Keith Marquis Sr. is the team manager/Coach and was very pleased. “Our kids defeated a tough Warwick team,” said Marquis. Riverside advanced to the Northeast Regional Tournament in New Hampshire, but fell short in their quest to take that title. “We thought we had the best team in the Regional’s but didn’t make it. It’s an incentive to get back here next year,” said coach Keith Marquis.

RI Interscholastic League Grant on APEDS

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) will be able to continue warning thousands of Rhode Island student athletics about the dangers of appearance and performance enhancing drugs (APEDs) thanks to a $75,000 grant from Rhode Island Foundation. This is the second straight year the RIIL has received funding from the Foundation for its “Operation Clean Competition” initiative. Since launching the program in August 2013, RIIL has educated more than 16,000 students, coaches and faculty at 31

September 2014 The Reporter school assemblies and community events. “We are thrilled to be awarded this additional funding. We will be partnering again with the Taylor Hooton Foundation (THF) to continue our efforts delivering these critical messages across the state of Rhode Island,” said Tom Mezzanotte, RIIL’s executive director. “But, there is more work to be done. Providing the information to the parents is just as important as educating the students. Reaching more parents is a top priority for the coming school year. “

Closer than You Think!

August 27, 2014, (East Providence, RI)—Well over a thousand people stopped by Hennessey Elementary School on Saturday, August 25, for BridgePointe Christian Church’s Back to School Fair. BridgePointe, located on Waterman Ave in East Providence, partnered with local businesses, organizations, and the East Providence Rotary to provide 450 backpacks full of supplies, 110 haircuts, eye screenings, and a pancake breakfast to families from Hennessey, Whiteknact, and Kent Heights schools. “This event brings a sense of community,” reflected Dr. Carrie McWilliams, principal at Hennessey Elementary, “and allows parents one less thing they have to worry about in getting set up for the school year in these tough, economic times.” After picking out their school supplies, kids enjoyed pancakes, face painting, mini golf, and more. One grateful parent commented, “This day really means a lot to me. It helps me out in sending my children back to school. I just want to say thank you.” “We really want our community here in East Providence to know they are loved

This was one way for the church to show our community that we care.” Mark your calendars for next August as BridgePointe plans to continue partnering with East Providence schools and families through the Back to School Fair! Back to School! Take the Stress out of Back-to-School School stress is a reality. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that “too much work and too little play could backfire down the road because we are seeing a generation of students who appear to be manifesting increased signs of depression, anxiety, perfectionism, and stress”. Competition to succeed can force some children to avoid school, fall behind in classes, or even drop out altogether. There are things parents can watch for to help reduce a child’s anxieties.

Teach time management skills: Organizational skills are crucial to help reduce stress from an early age. Spreading out tasks over a week-long period, for instance, often seems more manageable than “cramming” all at once. It is important to budget time for homework AND for recreation. Introduce the idea of using a planner/calendar to keep track of assignments. Stress-relieving homework tips: Create a check-list and have your child check off each item when complete. Work with teachers as they may post homework and test schedules to school website calendars. Add these dates and assignments with your child to the planner/calendar. Talk to your child to prioritize homework and study time. Students and parents can also explore on-line resources on school websites. Keep in touch with teachers and administrators, especially if your child is struggling, and research the availability of homework clubs, math clubs, science clubs, tutoring, etc. Finally, keep a designated homework area that is neat and quiet and free from distractions like video games, television, etc. Manage your child’s total schedule: Whether you are an adult or a child, over-scheduling is a huge contributor to stress. Striking a balance between school, homework, sports, and other extra activities will give your child appropriate time to accomplish what needs to be done with what he or she would like to do. Being on-the-go may be normal for some children, but most need downtime to play and “just be kids.” Encourage family time: Children should enjoy regular meals, exercise, play time, a good night’s sleep, and time to spend with family members and friends. Mealtimes are great opportunities to review the day and discuss issues that may be bothering your child. Try to ask open-ended questions that ensure more than a one-word answer.

Call the YMCA today! East Side/Mount Hope 401-521-0155

Watch for signs: You know your child better than anyone. Watch for signs that your child may be stressed. Young children may complain of stomach aches, headaches, or simply try to get out of going to school. Older students may make casual comments that really suggest a feeling of hopelessness or despair. In some extreme cases, children resort to hurting themselves in ways such as cutting to relieve stress.

LEARN. ACHIEVE. GROW.

gpymca.org YMCA of Greater Providence is a 501c3 organization. Financial assistance is available.

Be mindful of parental pressure: We all want what is best for our children, and the pressure to succeed in school, be accepted by the best colleges, and go onto the best paying job can be overwhelming. Competition is fierce and we don’t want our children to fall behind. But, as parents, we need to balance the support and encouragement to succeed with the long term goals of health, happiness, and security. When asking about school, try not to focus solely on the grades, but on what was learned that day, what happened that was exciting or funny, or what interested your child most. It is important to realize that a few low test scores here and there will not implode your child’s future.

September 2014 The Reporter

The most important ways to help your children minimize school stress are to be there for them, keep the lines of communication open with them and with the school, encourage them to do their best, and not lose sight of the fact that they are still children, who need to enjoy life. A balanced approach is the true key to their success in life. Access to Care When You Need It: East Bay Center clinicians are available by scheduled appointment or through the Center’s “Walk-in” model of care to assist adults, children, and their families through any number of complicated issues. Conveniently located in East Providence on the Wampanoag Trail, help is just around the corner. We encourage you to visit our website at www.eastbay. org for information regarding services, employment, locations, etc. To speak to someone regarding services or to schedule an appointment, please call 401-246-1195 and ask for “Intake.” Special thanks to the American Academy of Pediatrics and WebMD for some of the information contained in this article.

Providence Country Day School Wins International Video Awards

East Providence, RI — PCD has been awarded two Circle of Excellence Awards by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. CASE describes the awards as the advancement industry’s premier international awards program—recognizing “superior accomplishments that have lasting impact, demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and deliver exceptional results. (Winners) epitomize the profession’s best practices, raise standards and contribute to a growing body of knowledge about advancement.” In 2012-2013, PCD produced a series of six promotional videos, in order to share the school’s unique learning environment with new families. The signature piece, Accept the Challenge, laid the foundation for a call-to-action series that presented a range of perspectives on the school’s program.

Through the six videos, viewers are directed to Get Your Hands Dirty, See Things Differently, Make Some Noise, Make Something Better, and Find Your Voice. Two of the videos were singled out this year by CASE for their original and creative approaches. Of the 629 higher education institutions, independent schools, and nonprofits from around the world that submitted more than 3,000 entries, 168 institutions received awards. Only 14 of the recipients were independent schools and PCD was the only independent school to receive a video award. Accept the Challenge received a silver award and Find Your Voice received a bronze. When the first video was introduced at an all school assembly, Head of School Vince Watchorn said, “It is only because we have a school like this and students like you, that we could make a movie like this.” “We were excited about this project from the beginning,” said PCD Director of Communication, Nellie Walcoff. “We wanted to present PCD in a new way and give viewers a unique snapshot of our program and community. The feedback has been great; earning this recognition is a bonus.” See the videos at www.providencecountryday.org/admission/accept-the-challenge.

Flocks Once So Large... They Would Block the Sun

Audubon Society of Rhode Island Recognizes the 100 Year Anniversary of the Passenger Pigeon Extinction The Passenger Pigeon once had a population as high as 5 billion, the most abundant bird in North America. On September 1, 1914, Martha, the last known Passenger Pigeon in existence died in the Cincinnati Zoo. In the 1700s and 1800s people witnessed nature’s bounty as migrating flocks of Passenger Pigeons filled the skies, there were hundreds of thousands of wings beating in unison. There are descriptions of flocks so large that they were known to block the sun to witnesses below. The bird also became well known due to the work of John James Audubon. The Passenger Pigeon has become a haunting example of human-caused extinction. Unfortunately, the threats that caused the Passenger Pigeons extinction - habitat destruction and excessive hunting - still continue today. Climate change also poses new threats to birds and wildlife. In a recent study released by Birdlife International, 1 in 8 bird species worldwide face the threat of extinction. “Familiar birds like Purple Martins and Barn Swallows are disappearing at an alarming rate,” says Stewart Butchart, chief scientist for the international organization. Not only bird species but Monarch butterflies, once similar in number to Passenger Pigeons have declined by more than 90% according to the Center of Biological Diversity. Leading to a recently filed legal petition to have United States Fish and Wildlife Service extend Endanger Species Act protection to the Monarch. “It is alarming that in the span of only 50 years the Passenger Pigeon was driven from a population in the billions to total extinction,” said Larry Taft, Executive Director of the Audubon Society Rhode Island. “The example of the Passenger Pigeon is an important lesson for all of us to remember today as it underscores the continued need for wildlife conservation. That is why Audubon is recognizing this unfortunate milestone in natural history.” Starting on September 1 and continuing through the remainder of 2014, Audubon will be bringing attention to endangered species by creating a “Flock” of folded paper Passenger Pigeons. Stop by the Audubon Environmental Education Center in Bristol, RI and for a $.50 donation (to support endangered species) individuals can fold their own Passenger Pigeon and add it to a growing flock. The national “Fold the Flock” initiative has started hundreds of flocks across the country, totaling over 75,000 folded birds. Audubon folded Passenger Pigeons will be on display at the Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope Street, Bristol, RI. You can also download an origami template of the Passenger Pigeon at home (www.foldtheflock.org) and bring your folded pigeon to either the Audubon Environmental Education Center or Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge in Smithfield. The Reporter September 2014 Gift Shop

Remember to visit our lovely gift shop located in the dining room area. We have a great selection of hand made items, gift cards, and snacks. BBB Warns of Tax, IRS Phone Scam IRS and tax-related phone scams are being reported to the Better Business Bureau nationwide. The BBB warns that scammers are posing as IRS officials and threaten jail time and loss of property to residents who owe taxes. The agency has received calls from residents who say they even receive voicemail messages stating they need to contact the IRS immediately or they would face legal consequences. Other messages left on the voice threaten arrest by U.S. Marshals for failure to pay the correct amount of taxes. In addition to claiming to be from the IRS, other individuals say they have been called by people stating they were with the U.S. Treasury both are scams, they say. These IRS and tax-related phone scams are being reported to BBBs nationwide. According to the IRS, the agency never contacts taxpayers by phone requesting money. They also never contact taxpayers by email. If there is an issue with the IRS that requires your response, the contact would be made by U.S. mail.

BBB recommends the following tips if you receive one of these scam phone calls: Hang Up - Don’t provide any information over the phone. Call the IRS directly using the phone number found on their legitimate website. http://www.irs.gov Protect Personal Information - In response to an incoming call, never give out any personal or financial information such as your Social Security number, financial information or any passwords and other identifying information. IRS Contacts via U.S. Mail - If a caller claiming to be an IRS agent notifies you of an outstanding tax debt, but you haven’t received official notification from the IRS through the United States Postal Service, it is most likely a scam. The IRS always starts by sending taxpayers written notification of any tax due via U.S. Mail. Look Out for Spoofing - Part of scammers’ sophisticated tactics include ‘spoofing,’ which happens when the caller masks their own number and causes the number of a well-known service, like the IRS, to appear on caller ID. Don’t be a victim!...And if you think you have been REPORT IT. REMEMBER... You should never give out personal information to someone who calls. The Government will not and does not call for this or any other personal information

Dave Says

Repair Now or Buy Later? Dear Dave, I’m driving a 10-year-old car with 195,000 miles on it. The car needs $1,500 in repairs, and it’s worth $5,000. I have $40,000 in cash saved, $40,000 in investments and I make $80,000 a year. I also have $15,000 in student loan debt, but the only other thing I owe on is my house. Should I pay to repair the car or buy something else for $15,000? Dave Dear Dave, Nice name! If you wrote a $15,000 check for a newer car and wrote a $15,000 check for the student loans, it would leave you with $10,000. I wouldn’t buy a $15,000 car in your situation. I’d buy a $10,000 car. You could sell your current car for around $3,500 if it needs repairs, combine that with your money and get a $13,500 car. Then, you could write a check and pay off the student loan. With no car payment, no student loan payment and a good car, you can really lean into your budget. Think about it. You’d have no debt except for your home, and you could rebuild your savings in a hurry and be in really great shape in about six months. Plus, you’d have $15,000 sitting there in the meantime! —Dave

No Pets Allowed Dear Dave, I have several rental properties, and lately I’ve been spending a ton of money remodeling them because I allow pets. Do you think I should begin refusing tenants with pets? Jim Dear Jim, This is a tough one for me, because I have three dogs of my own. I’ve got a pug that’s older than dirt, a shih tzu with an attitude and the best golden retriever on the planet. I love animals, and like you, I’ve got a lot of rental properties. But I don’t allow animals in my properties. Some people have accused me of hating all animals except my own. I can tell you that’s not true. But the fact is a lot of people don’t take good care of their animals and keep an eye on them. It’s hard enough to find trustworthy, responsible renters these days, and if you add a dog or cat on top of that you’re just asking for trouble. I’ve had situations in the past where I had to spend $10,000 to clean up a house after a tenant had a dog or cat in there. They’ll chew things up, stain and stink things up, and tear things up. Sometimes you even have to replace the floorboards! I had a lady offer me $10,000 deposit the other day on one of my properties, just so she could move in with her dog. I said no. It’s in all my leases now — no animals. I don’t allow them in at the beginning, and if one of my tenants gets one after they move in they either have to find a new home for the animal or move out themselves. At that point they’re in violation of the lease. The problem is I really do have a heart for animals. I love them. But as a landlord who’s running a business, it just doesn’t make sense. —Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business.
