City Council to Advertise for Top Job Again The East Providence City Council has, once again, slowly started a move to name a permanent City Manager. At its’ April meeting the council authorized Human Resources Director Kathleen Waterbury to again formulate a job description and then advertise for the position. Paul Lemont, a two-time former City Manager is currently serving as Acting City Manager.

Paul Lemont was brought back as interim because another former manager Peter Graczykowski was fired after a short tenure as city manager. Graczykowski, hired by a prior city council in September of 2011, was never given a binding employment contract.

Graczykowski was hired after another former manager, Peter Brown was not retained as the city’s chief executive.

Lemont was not retained by a former city council in 2003 who refused to renew his contract at that time. After Lemont was hired as an interim leader he made it clear that he would like the job back on a permanent basis. “Yes, I would like to stay on as permanent city manager,” Lemont told the Reporter in a prior interview. Ward 2 councilman Helder Cunha, had introduced a resolution to have Graczykowski suspended and then fired after Graczykowski had raised some eyebrows with a couple of controversial decisions and became embroiled in a growing controversy between the police union and its embattled police chief at the time, Joseph Tavares. After Graczykowski was fired, Lemont was brought back to the city in November of 2013 as interim city manager.

About this time the state appointed budget commission was finishing its’ work in East Providence, although a financial overseer, Paul Luber, still remains in the city. “I look forward to coming back,” said Lemont at the time. “I think I can help bring back our city. When I was here I knew where every penny was spent. I will do that again,” he stated. Lemont also dealt with the police controversy in the city and eventually brokered a deal in which Joseph Tavares left and Chris Parella was named Police Chief. “When I left in 2003, we were at an all-time high. We had been nominated for All America City status 3 times in 14 years, our Police and Fire Pension Plan was fully funded, we were on the verge of having the state see our waterfront recovery, and we had the lowest tax rate of any City in the state. There were many other accolades that put us “first” or “on top” and while the bloom has been off that rose for the past few

years, we are once again poised to regain our former status. The nightmare of running out of money or of having to have outsiders determine our destiny is over. With few restrictions, we are once again in the driver’s seat of directing our future,” Lemont told city councilors and taxpayers at a budget hearing, when he returned.

Lemont has made it very clear that he thought it was a big mistake for the state to send a Budget Commission here to run the city recently. “The state screwed up.

They thought having state people run a city government is the same. It’s not, they were wrong,” he added. “The quality of life was in question for our city. The Budget Commission cost of thousands of dollars in unneeded overtime costs by not filling needed police, fire and other critical positions,” Lemont continued. Since Lemont has returned to office he has filled some 16 vacancies in the fire department and 6 to 7 officers are in the police academy. “Our forces were working too long with platoon systems using overtime and they became stressed out. It’s not the right way to run a city,” said Lemont. Lemont said that the Budget Commission and others failed badly in the recent fire department construction delay. “... but I’m glad to say that we now have finished (fire station constructions) and staffing levels are almost back, and we had no tax increase,” he added. “I know this city, I have the experience. I left this city in great shape and I would like to get us back up there,” said Lemont. Paul Lemont spent almost 20 years as a top manager at the former Providence Gas Company before becoming East Providence’s City Manager.

Since Lemont has returned as an interim, the city has appeared to run smoothly and he has the support of city department heads in City Hall. The long standing city deficit has been eliminated according to state watchdog, Paul Luber and needed repairs have occurred throughout the school department which had seen city school infrastructure neglected for years. However at times there have been some tense council meetings with some members pushing for the manager’s job to be advertised. Mayor Tom Rose, while lavishing praise upon Paul Lemont, initiated a move last month to have the city finally advertise and hire a permanent City Manager. “I hope he (Lemont) applies, we are pleased with him,” said Rose.

In the past, Ward 2 councilman Helder Cunha has pushed for the job to be advertised widely, “so we can get the best can-

didate to run our city.” Personnel Director Waterbury responded to the council that a previous attempt to seek qualified candidates for the job failed to produce enough good candidates. Waterbury cited a low salary range for the position at that time.

Waterbury will report back to the council in early May with a new salary range commensurate with top jobs elsewhere. Lemont didn’t comment last month but if his prior public comments are still holding true, he will apply for his old and current job again. continued on next page...

New Synthetic Field For High School

The EP school committee gave formal approval to a semiprivatization plan with the private Bayside Football Club which will build an artificial turf field behind the high school complex. The area now contains a much used and worn all purpose field used by football, soccer and other school athletic and city groups from the city. The agreement was crafted after long deliberations on the topic. “We want to make sure that the agreement is beneficial to our students first and also to the private groups who may use the area,” said board Chairman Charles Tsonos before the meeting in April.

The agreement calls for a 25 year lease which allows school teams and Bayside to share the complex. According to Tsonos, the Bayside group was concerned that they may lose their investment should the city ever decide to build a new high school on the site of the athletic fields. The agreement alleviates that concern with legal language as well as the fact that there is no talk of building a new high school in the foreseeable future.

The agreement by the school committee was sent to the city council for their ratification, although Ward 2 member Joel Monteiro did not see the need for this action. “The School Committee, in an historic and unanimous vote, entered into a partnership with Bayside Football Club that will beautify our city and provide an unprecedented opportunity to our student athletes for years to come… at no cost to the taxpayer,” blogged Ward 3 committee member Nate Cahoon. “This will be a state-of-the-art turf field to be shared between the two parties. Beginning in the 2015-16 school year, and for the next two decades, our Townie soccer and lacrosse players will have access to the type of field enjoyed by students at LaSalle Academy and Brown University. And the best part is that Bayside will bear the cost of developing and maintaining the field,” added Cahoon who took a major part in supporting this arrangement.

“Our City has taken its lumps in recent years: austere budgets, a construction moratorium, bad press, etc. Yet our student athletes are winning. They are studying hard, practicing hard, and bringing championships back to EP. We owe it to them to find uncommon solutions to uncommon problems. And as stewards of the taxpayer, we need to do so in a way that doesn’t break the bank,” said an excited Cahoon. The proposal received unanimous committee support.

Inducted in the RI Music Hall of Fame

Musicians with EP Ties were April inductees to the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Duke Belaire, George Masso, and Bob Petteruti were inducted, with several others in a ceremony at Bovi’s Tavern on Taunton Avenue, East Providence. The ceremony was held before the long standing weekly performance by the Bovi’s big band led by John Allmark. “The choice of Bovi’s was a natural choice as one of the jazz inductees, Duke Belaire, was founder of the Bovi’s band 40 years ago. Drummer Anthony “Duke” DeCubellis was certainly born to his calling. His father, Ray Belaire, led one of the top New England big bands of the Swing era and also ran The Arcadia Ballroom in downtown Providence where Duke got his start. Following in his dad’s footsteps, he adopted the Belaire stage name and organized the house band at The Celebrity Club, Rhode Island’s first integrated nightspot, backing every major star who came through the area. In 1967, he founded his own big band and secured a Monday night residency at Bovi’s Tavern in East Providence in 1969. Duke is credited with keeping the big band sound alive for the next 25 years. The orchestra, still based at Bovi’s and now under the direction of trumpeter John Allmark, is considered the longest continually running big band in the United States. Born in Providence, Belaire now resides in Cranston,” said

the group’s press release. The Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame’s 2015 inductees are: The Schemers/Raindogs/Mark Cutler (EP ties), Brenda Bennett, Nelson Eddy, George Masso, George Wein, Duke Belaire, Paco Zimmer, Georgie Porgie & The Cry Babies, The Others, The Ascots, Bob Petteruti, Marty Ballou, and Marty Richards.

Kazarian Introduces Commemorative Legislation

Rep. Katherine Kazarian, D - District 63, introduced a House resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in April. “Today has been an extremely powerful and emotional day. Despite all odds, we Armenians are here today and we are stronger than ever. I am so proud to see the colors of our flag on the Rhode Island state house because it means we haven’t forgotten who we are, it means we have just created a new Armenia...” said Kazarian after a State House program on her legislation to urge President Obama and Congress to officially recognize the genocide. Kazarian’s resolution read in part that “It is resolved that this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby recognizes April 24, 2015, as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in the State of Rhode Island. This House expresses its deepest sympathy to the Armenian-American community of Rhode Island and assures them that this genocide will always be commemorated and never forgotten.”

Former School Board Chair Millie Morris Honored

City and State Democrats honored Mildred “Millie” Morris at the local annual Democratic Spring Fling dinner party at the HGBB hall last month. “Millie was one of the city’s highest vote getters ever, never losing an election,” said event chairman Bruce Rogers.

City democratic chair John Faria lauded Morris’ many volunteer efforts within East Providence. At 80, the former School Committee Chairperson continues to help many Townies and other Rhode Islanders as a volunteer for countless charities. State Representatives Gregg Amore, Helio Melo, US Congressman David Cicilline, State Treasurer Seth Magaziner, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea current and former school board and city council members all were in attendance. School Committee chairman Charles Tsonos noted that Morris was first elected to the East Providence School Committee in 1996. “Millie served for 12 years and was named as a committee clerk, vice-chair and board Chairperson by her fellow committee members. She has been and continues to be active in several volunteer city groups. These include the Crescent Park Carousel Commission, the Friends of Townies Athletic Board, the EP High School Hall of Fame Committee – and she is also an Inductee into the Hall of Fame. She is active in the Democratic Ward 3 and City Committees as well as several other volunteer efforts to help those in need in our city, including the local Juvenile Hearing Board,” remarked Tsonos.

City Recreation Department offers Karate Classes for area Youth

The recreation department offers Karate Instruction for youth ages 6-14 on Thursdays, 6-8pm from April 2 - June 4, 2015. The 10 week session costs $50 per child. First Time Beginners attend from 6-7pm with Intermediate participants from 7- 8pm. Intermediates must have taken beginner classes at the Rec. Center. Classes are held at the Rec. Second Amendment Under Attack

Our second amendment rights are once again under attack by our said leaders who believe they are more qualified to run our lives than us!

There are two ways to handle people when you are looking for a specific outcome. One is through reason, the other through violence. Being armed prevents the use of violence because when a person is armed, any size disparities between people are null and void.

A 250lb 6’2 thug is no bigger than a woman with a gun. No car full of thugs attempting to violate a single man is more powerful if that man is armed! When a citizenry is armed all people are equal and there is more civility! Gun ownership is mandatory for a civil society.

The founders obviously knew this and why we have the second amendment.

The mere thought of any person denying a citizen this right is a violent predator of civility. Violence is the taking of something from a person, whether it be of a physical nature, a material thing or one’s own thoughts through coercion. Coercing people through the use of fear is a form of violence which our media takes full part in by getting daily marching orders from a few select elites that run our government, our money and our media.

Government seems to need us in constant war and fear because we would never think to submit to the oppression that is being bestowed upon us through gun control laws, the TSA, and the patriot act through reason! You can’t talk people into a collective state with any sort of rational. So our leaders choose to slowly coerce us into believing rhetoric and half truths from the media and themselves about how the only way we can be safe is for them to control us more!

Correction

In an article in the April edition of the Reporter, referring to a current discrimination charge against the East Providence School Department, I incorrectly stated that Michael D. Evora, Executive Director, RI Commission For Human Rights had sent a letter to local officials regarding discrimination against minority employees and applicants in the school department. The letter was actually sent

by Steven Brown, head of the Rhode Island Chapter of the ACLU. Mr. Evora was copied on the letter. The Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights found Probable Cause to support an initial charge of discrimination some 20 years ago. I apologize for the error. - Bob Rodericks.

Retired Martin and EPHS Band Director Honored

Martin Middle School of East Providence has announced the creation of an annual award in honor of retired music educator, Rick Vars. The award was the idea of a former student of Rick Vars, who is herself, the current band director for Martin. “As a tribute to Mr. Vars and all of his contributions during his tenure at Martin Middle School, we are instituting an award in his honor. The Richard M. Vars Outstanding Service and Spirit Award will be given annually to an 8th grade Martin Middle School Band student who will be recognized for displaying some of Mr. Vars’ best qualities,” said Martin band director, Susana Aguiar Pimentel. Aguiar Pimentel and other former students of Rick Vars, along with former colleagues from throughout Rhode Island have been heaping praise upon the ill music aficionado.

Aguiar Pimentel explains that the recipient will be someone who “exhibits a tremendous love and passion for the art of music, demonstrates on-going dedication and commitment to the program, and serves as a role-model who is looked up to by others.” Aguiar Pimentel was a member of the Martin band directed by Rick Vars in the early 1990’s and later was a band member at East Providence High School, graduating in 1998.

“I remember being in the library when Mr. Vars approached our class with a list in his hand containing the names of the students who had passed the Farnum test. I sat in anticipation, but much to my dismay, my name was not called...I fought back the tears and was not able to concentrate for the remainder of the day,” recalls Aguiar. This story is not unlike that of several other students through the years. Former students have fondly recalled how they weren’t “chosen” to be in the band “on paper” but were given a chance

by Vars, only to make and excel as band members.

“As soon as I got home (in 1992) I begged my mom to call Mr. Vars to see if he might make an exception. Luckily, he agreed to allow me into the program, and the rest is history. 23 years later, and in my 13th year of teaching, I find myself at his podium, keeping his legacy alive. I was so fortunate to have been placed with him during my student teaching and I am infinitely grateful for all of the mentoring he provided,” Aguiar Pimentel said as she announced the Vars award.

“Always positive, encouraging and full of love, there is much to be admired about Mr. Vars. I feel that this award is a very personal way for us to stay connected to the influence he has over his students and to show our appreciation! I would like to extend an invitation to Mr. Vars to present the first award at this year’s award ceremony!” said Aguiar Pimentel.

Rick Vars is a 1972 graduate of Rogers High School in Newport, RI and then studied music at Rhode Island College. He received his Masters Degree in music education and launched a career as a music teacher that has brought him an army of former students and music lovers. From 1980 to 1985 he taught band at Middletown High School. Middletown became one of the best known high school bands in the area under Rick Vars. The love of music is certainly in the family as Claudia Vars has been a music educator in Warwick and Middletown public schools where she was Director of Fine Arts and Chorus. She, too, is a renown teacher of music attending URI, RIC and Hartt School of Music.

When another former Martin Band Director, Jack McNamara took over the helm at the high school, people at Martin were worried. “Mac” as he was known to everyone had done such a great job preparing junior high school band students that some feared the middle-schoolers would regress without McNamara. “That never happened,” said retired Martin Principal, John Rezendes.

Rezendes was Vars’ first principal in East Providence. Some thought the system might have a problem with Martin losing McNamara, but McNamara said he knew of a perfect candidate for Martin’s band. “I

know a great band teacher,” said Jack McNamara at the time. The rest is history as that new band leader was Rick Vars. Vars applied for the Martin job and became an instant hit with students, parents, colleagues and administrators. “We never missed a beat with Rick at the helm. Our program flourished and the high school benefitted from gaining McNamara,” said Rezendes. “Right from the start, we knew Rick was an amazingly talented teacher and musician. Rick was a gifted teacher with his low-key but intense approach to middle school students. He had the students excited and committed to the band program. His Christmas and spring concerts were testaments to the power of leadership with his band students,” said Rezendes.

“He had seventh, eighth and ninth grade students practicing well above what was expected of junior high students.

Canned goods such as vegetables, soups, spaghetti sauce, tuna, fruits as well as peanut butter, pasta, cereals, etc. are needed most since they go in every bag, but condiments, dry milk, juice boxes, snacks, crackers and baking items are really nice additions to those basic bags.

Sparky’s Coney Island Weiners is 100 Years Old

When word got around that Sparky’s was possibly closing due to slow business, people rallied and came to support the business.

“I saw it on face book and decided to go to Sparkys and help rally support for small business,” said EP City Council At Large member, Tracy Adams Capobianco at the time. “I’m really here as a fellow small business owner and resident, not so much as a council Gina Ankner and Gail Duarte at person,” she added. “If I can help another Townie, I’ll be there,” Sparky's Coney Island.

Capobianco said. “Tracy always supports local businesses. She wanted to get here (Sparkys) today and I’m glad we came,” said her husband David. “I think East Providence is trying to be business friendly,” said Tracy Capobianco. “Social media helps and people now know more about this issue. Maybe as a community we could pitch in. Maybe a breakfast club of sorts. We could go to all of these places in groups. Take turns and go to all of them. Even if it’s just one day a week. Something to think about,” said Capobianco as she and her husband finished breakfast.

George “Sparky” Watts experienced a roller coaster ride of emotions during this last year after the community got wind that his famous Coney Island System restaurant, aka the “weenie joint”, was in danger of closing. “It’s been tougher to stay in business. I’ve taken loans and have exhausted all my assets to stay in business.

Not sure if I can stay in business,” Watts had told The Reporter.

The bad news spread like wildfire on social networks like face book.

NBC Channel 10 ran two stories which brought the plight of Sparkys Coney Island statewide. Since that point the response was huge.

Sparky did some quick upgrading. The old dark paneled walls were painted white with a nice red trim. New menus were placed in sight. Employees did the painting and others pitched in to spruce up the place. “We plan to put 50’s style black and white floor tiles down and a new brighter ceiling in,” said a helper sounding like a television reality show advisor. “I agreed to make changes but I want to keep my base menu intact. Weenies, burgers, fries, soups, etc. will remain but I am adding some healthier choices like salads and veggie burgers,” said a rejuvenated sounding Watts. “We always had some pastry items but I am adding an expanded desert menu with fresh items for those who want it. I also agree with making more cosmetic changes,” said Watts. A new sign of the times is that Sparkys added credit card capabilities which some customers have asked about.

Francis Farm Celebrates 125 Years

Francis Farm has always been a popular destination in Rehoboth for all kinds of special occasions. Since 1890, when the first clambake was held, Francis Farm has hosted a multitude of public clambakes, family outings, corporate events, weddings, school functions, fundraisers and more.

This year Francis Farm is celebrating its 125th anniversary and they will be marking the milestone with a few special events this summer.

“It’s exciting,” said Ken Foley. Foley has owned Francis Farm for 11 years and he and his wife Linda and sons Ken Jr., Kevin and Keith run the facility.

Francis Farm has a rich history in town. It has been family owned and operated since it first opened. The Francis family homesteaded the farm in 1820 and in 1890 Peleg Francis started cooking up clam bakes. Although it was once a working farm, the land was not ideal for planting and Francis turned the Farm into an event venue.

Francis’ first clambake was for the Goff Gathering. The Goff family, headed by Captain Shubael Goff and Sally Briggs Goff, who were married in1805, and their descendants started an annual family gathering in the late 1800’s that was held in various locations.

According to a booklet put together for the Goff Gathering’s 100th anniversary, “In 1887 the Gathering really decided that a clambake was the only proper meal and the decision has never been altered, for which all are duly thankful.” In 1917, Francis Farm became the permanent site of the Goff Gathering and with the exception of one year, the annual get together has been held at Francis Farm ever since.

“They still come. They come every August and have a big clambake,” Foley said. That first Goff clambake at Francis Farm was so popular that more and more people started coming and to this day Francis Farm is widely known for its clambakes and especially, for its clam cakes and chowder. (Francis Farm still uses Peleg’s Original Clam Chowder recipe.)

The Goffs aren’t the only guests who return year after year to Francis Farm. “We have parties that have been coming here for 60 or 70 years,” Foley said.One of the groups is the Sons of the Irish Kings, who hold an event with 400 or 500 people every year. The Rhode Island Builders Association and Providence Jewelers have also been coming for about 50 years, says Foley.

“One thing about Francis Farm is the quality of the food has never changed. Very few facilities still put on a traditional, oldfashioned clambake. That hasn’t changed for 125 years,” Foley said. “We still use the same recipes for chowder and clam cakes that they did back in 1890,” he added.

After Peleg Francis died, his son William Francis took over the Farm in the 1900’s and ran it until 1958.

Francis Farm Today & Yesterday

Foley’s relatives, the Taylor family, and Foley’s grandfather, Frank Miller, purchased the farm in 1958. Foley was just a boy then and he remembers working as a dishwasher, bus boy and maintenance worker at the Farm. Foley purchased the Farm in 2004 and over the years, has remodeled most of the buildings.

But it still retains the country charm it had when the first clambake was fired up.

Francis Farm now serves about 20,000 people a year from all over southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and farther. Three United States Presidents have eaten at the Farm – John Kennedy, Harry Truman and Franklin Roosevelt.

Over the years, some things at Francis Farm have changed and others have stayed the same. “Times have changed. We don’t do as many corporate outings, but we do over 40 weddings a year and birthdays, reunions, and fundraisers,” Foley said. Other changes include an expanded menu and a new sweet shop that was opened in 2004. “We’re famous for our barbecue chicken. We cater to different needs of different patrons. We offer barbecue chicken to Italian buffet to steak. All the food is prepared and cooked on site.

The chowder and clam cakes are all made from scratch and we use fresh, native clams,” Foley said.

Most people who grew up in the area have either worked at, or attended at least one event, at Francis Farm over the years. “You talk to anybody, especially the older generation, and they’ve all been to Francis Farm,” Foley said. The Farm is the largest employer in the town of Rehoboth, says Foley, employing between 50-60 staff during the summer months.

Guests return for the food, the atmosphere and the variety of offerings at the Farm. Every year, Francis Farm hosts four public clambakes which are always well-attended. One of the amenities is that there is a full range of activities for kids including basketball, bocce, horseshoes, and a full softball field. Francis Farm also has a 7,000 sq. ft. museum with antique cars, tractors and other tools and supplies.

“There’s always plenty to do at the farm, for young and old,” Foley said.

Community Involvement

Francis Farm is also known for its support of many community organizations. It hosts more than 12 fundraisers a year, including events for Ronald McDonald House and the Sgt. Kyle Harrington Memorial Bike Run. When Community Autism Resources (CAR), a community service organization in Swansea that assists families affected by autism, was looking for a new venue last year for its annual fundraiser “Hearts and Hands Walk-a-thon and Family Fun Day,” they looked at more than a dozen venues before settling on Francis Farm.

After holding the walk for 10 years at Bristol Community College in Fall River, the Hearts and Hands Walk was held at Francis Farm for the first time in 2014. Walk Coordinator Crystal Medeiros says that Francis Farm was extremely helpful and welcomed them with open arms.

“I can’t say enough nice things about Odete Lacourse, the event planner, and Ken Foley. They were absolutely accommodating, making sure we had everything we needed. They went above and beyond what they needed to do for us,” Medeiros said.

Medeiros said reconfiguring the event and the walk, after having been in one place for 10 years, was an overwhelming task, but Francis Farm helped make it easier. Rain, strong headwinds and chilly 40-degree temperatures didn’t stop East Providence resident, John Ponte, 43, from completing his second Boston Marathon on April 20. Ponte ran the marathon in support of the Joe Andruzzi Foundation to raise awareness and money for cancer patients and their families who face financial hardship while undergoing treatment.

Despite the tough conditions, Ponte finished the marathon, setting a personal best by shaving 21 minutes off of his time last year. Ponte also raised $14,000 for JAF. The money raised will go towards grants to assist cancer patients in financial need so that they can focus on treatment and recovery. Those financial grants typically help with expenses such as mortgage and rent payments, utility bills, groceries, gas and other expenditures.

Local Riverside Student among Group of Roger Williams University Students that Traded Sun and Sand for Service Learning on Spring Break

Bristol, RI - For many college students, a week off in March means sunny, sandy Spring Break getaways -- but for a group of dedicated Roger Williams University students including Hannah Augustyn from Riverside, RI, the break from classes and assignments was an opportunity to give back, dive into outside-the-classroom learning experiences and have a little fun along the way.

More than 130 students, from undergraduate to graduate to law, participated in Alternative Spring Break trips, where groups of students -- often led by faculty or staff advisors -- work in teams to lead volunteer projects aimed at improving communities or assisting nonprofit organizations.

This year, students served local cities including Providence and Boston, traveled across the country to New York City, New Orleans and Tuba City, Arizona, and even headed abroad to countries including Peru, among others. Habitat for Humanity, Project Homecoming and Rebuilding Together are among the many partner organizations for which the students will volunteer to help address critical community issues from affordable housing to public health awareness.

Augustyn was among 30 students that volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to help build homes for low-income families in the community. The RWU student group performed a number of tasks including interior demolition, sheet rocking and porch building to help get the volunteer site leader house ready for occupancy.

The Alternative Spring Break program at Roger Williams University continues to grow each year both in size of the student groups and scope of the service-learning projects. Kingston, RI - The University of Rhode Island Theatre Department continues its 2014-2015 season with William Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, “As You Like It.” Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy was first published in 1623 and remains a favorite among modern audiences, having been adapted for radio, film and musical theatre. The play centers on Rosalind, who flees persecution in her uncle’s court while accompanied by her cousin Celia and Touchstone, the court Jester, to find safety and love in the Forest of Arden.

Kent Hu of East Providence Performs in College Choir Concert at McDaniel College

Westminster, MD - Kent Hu, a senior from East Providence (02914) performs in the annual College Choir Concert at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md. The performance, which is free and open to the public, takes place Sunday, April 26, 7 p.m., in Baker Memorial Chapel.

Kingston, RI - Last month, a team of University of Rhode Island students fought global childhood malnutrition by spreading the word and raising money for Edesia with the #MakeYourGreenCount Plumpy’Nut Challenge. This was a social media campaign encouraging people to “get their green on” and donate St. Patrick’s Day. The students raised more than $4,800 to help children worldwide.

Saturday, May 9 marks the 23rd anniversary of America’s largest-single day of giving — the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, United Way and other partners.

Currently, 49 million Americans—1 in 6—are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help.

In 2014, over 72 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people.

Over the course of the 22-year history, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food.

The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. Bowling and Pizza Event to Support Alzheimer’sRhode Island State Grange Sunday May 17, 2015

On Sunday May 17, 2015, the Deaf and Health Department of the Rhode Island State Grange are planning a fun event for all that will also go to a great cause. They will be going to the Bowling Academy at 354 Taunton Avenue in East Providence at 4 PM for two strings of bowling. Then will be going to Roger Williams-Rumford Grange Hall on North Broadway in East Providence for pizza and refreshments. The profits and sponsorship money from the event will be going to support Alzheimer’s. There may be some certificates bases on bowling scores.

There is a $15 registration fee which will cover shoes, two strings of bowling and pizza. This can either be paid by yourself or by having a minimum of $15 in sponsors to go towards registration.

EP Kids Rock Chorus Annual Concert June 2nd

The EP Kids Rock Chorus will be having their annual concert on June 2nd at the East Providence High School at 6:30pm. The chorus is made of 4th and 5th graders from four elementary schools: Kent Heights, Hennessey, Orlo Avenue, and Whiteknact. They will be singing songs from various artists including Aerosmith, The Beatles, Pharrell Williams, One Republic, and Bob Marley. Tickets are $2 and are sold at the door.

Gala To Honor Local Organizations and Individuals

East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) will present its annual Vision Award to three local organizations and one individual that have helped the agency in an outstanding way. The recipients include: Newport Art Museum, The Champlin Foundations, van Beuren Charitable Foundation and Dr. Martha Ullman.

And the agency will present its 2015 Public Service Award to East Providence City Councilwoman Tracy Capobianco. Awardees will be recognized at EBCAP’s 12th Annual Seaside Gala on June 3, 2015 at Castle Hill Inn in Newport.

Newport Art Museum will be honored for its loyal and generous support of EBCAP’s Newport Family and Child Opportunity Zone program through art enrichment programs on site at Newport elementary schools.

The Champlin Foundations will be recognized for its loyal and generous support, helping EBCAP provide critical health and human services to the residents of Rhode Island’s east bay region. van Beuren Charitable Foundation will be honored for providing support through grants that have dramatically impacted the agency’s ability to provide quality services to thousands of Newport County residents.

Dr. Martha Ullman will be acknowledged for her support of the Head Start Program. For many years she has volunteered her medical expertise to assist its health and nutrition committee.

-MoreEBCAP will also pay tribute to Tracy Capobianco, East Providence City Councilwoman, for her ongoing support of East Providence residents and the organizations that serve them.

Jane Gerety, RSM, President of Salve Regina University is the Honorary Event Chair. Michelle Muscatello, WPRI Eyewitness News Meteorologist, will lead the live auction, and Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island is the event’s leading sponsor.

At the event there will be live and silent auctions with items and packages that will be available for online bidding at www. biddingforgood.com/EBCAP beginning May 22. This year’s event will also feature in-room mobile bidding on all silent auction items.

Guests will be able to use any mobile device to bid on their favorite items. Bidders in the greater online community will also be able to continue to bid on the silent auction up until the close of bidding at 8:30 p.m. on June 3.

This year, the Seaside Gala will celebrate EBCAP’s 50 years of service. It, like related Community Action Programs, grew out of President Lyndon B. Newman Church Choral Concert Featuring the Choral Works of Randall Thompson

RUMFORD, R.I. - Newman Congregational Church, U.C.C., is pleased to present our annual choral concert, featuring works by American composer Randall Thompson. The Newman choir will sing Thompson’s Frostiana, The Peaceable Kingdom, The Last Words of David, and his famous Alleluia.

Randall Thompson (1899-1984) is a preeminent American composer mostly known for his choral compositions. He attended Harvard University and received his doctorate in music from the prestigious Eastman School of Music. Thompson taught at Wellesley College, the Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Virginia, and at Harvard, respectively.

Frostiana: Seven Country Songs (1959) includes a wonderfully diverse set of poems by Robert Frost scored for mixed chorus and piano. The Peaceable Kingdom (1936) was inspired by the painting of the same name by Edward Hicks and based upon texts from the Prophet Isaiah. His most popular and recognizable choral work is his anthem Alleluia (1940), commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky for the opening of the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood.

The Newman Adult Choir, under the direction of Geoffrey Greene, features soloists Alisa Cassola, soprano, Barbara Youmans, alto, Neil Letendre, tenor, and Lucky Rattan, bass.

The Newman Choral Concert will take place on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 3 pm. The public is cordially invited and there is a suggested donation of $10. Sponsorship opportunities and tickets are available at the Newman Church office or by calling 401-434-4742 x10. Childcare is provided for this event by a professional staff. American Legion Riverside Post 10 Memorial Day Events

American Legion Riverside Post 10 located on 830 Willett Ave will be hosting its annual Memorial Day parade on Monday May 25 at 10 AM. Bristol, RI, March 4, 2015 - Linden Place Museum will host a walking tour of Linden Place Mansion and downtown Bristol, focused specifically on Bristol’s DeWolf Family and their involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. The DeWolf family, Bristol’s premier family in the 18th and early 19th centuries, was once one of the largest traders of slaves in New England.

Learn how Bristol, New England, and all of America were impacted by the slave trading DeWolf’s of Linden Place from museum educator, Robin Tremblay. Tremblay has extensively researched Rhode Island’s connections to slavery and has led many tours along Bristol’s slavery trail.

The guided tour will take place on Saturday, May 16th at 10:00am and will begin at Linden Place, the Federal-style mansion built by architect Russell Warren for George DeWolf. The tour will then continue through the center of historic Bristol and down to the waterfront on Thames Street, pointing out significant sites tied to Bristol’s lengthy and profitable involvement in the slave trade. The tour ends at the historic DeWolf Tavern, once a DeWolf waterfront warehouse, where tour-goers will enjoy a rum cocktail and ask questions.

The tour is $20, $15 for Linden Place members, and includes a complimentary drink at the DeWolf Tavern. Reservations are required and the tour is limited to 15 people. For more information and reservations, please call the Linden Place office at 401-253-0390.

Ray Tameo is a perfectionist in his work. A self-taught artist from Attleboro, MA, his sixty-year love of bird watching, painting, duck hunting and fly-fishing are evident in this exhibit. An accomplished bird carver who has taught classes for the Audubon Society, Mr. Tameo’s work is noted for accuracy and the natural settings on which his birds are displayed. One of Mr. Tameo’s bird paintings will be raffled off at the end of the program.

Troop 45 Visits East Providence Police Station

Members of East Providence Daisy Troop 45 earned their “Respecting Authority” petal and Police Tour badge by visiting the East Providence Police Station. Sergeant Mark Norton and Officer Tammy David led the girls on a tour of the station which included: dispatch, locker rooms, holding cells, and training rooms.

They then spoke to them about personal and home safety and how important it is for them to know their phone numbers and addresses.

Members of East Providence Brownie Troop 519 had a terrific visit to Twinkle Toes Dance Studio in Riverside! They had gone there to fulfill the requirements for their Dance badge. The Scouts learned about the importance of doing stretching exercises before dancing. They also learned different dance moves and steps.

Troop 473 Attends Tabletop Game Day

Members of East Providence Girl Scout Troop 473 attended the International Tabletop Game Day on Saturday, April 11th, at the Girl Scout main office in Warwick. Expert game designers, inventors, writers, marketers, and graphic artists from Hasbro spoke to them about making board games and marketing them globally. Each speaker talked to the troop members about their particular specialty and answered any questions the girls may have had. The girls later played games with the experts and even took home a board game!

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS Sports Update

East Providence AYSO 715 Dragons Win Championship

On Saturday March 28th, 2015 the East Providence AYSO Dragons comprised primarily of U9 and U10 boys and playing up in age in the U12B Division won their championship tournament at the Wide World of Indoor Sports in North Kingstown. The Dragons finished their second U12 winter indoor session with a regular season record of 7 wins and 1 loss, finishing in first place. They led the league in offense and defense, scoring 52 goals and allowing only 11 goals.

The Dragons faced the Warwick Firefighters team in the semi-finals and came away with a 5-2 victory to propel them to the finals against the second place team, Rams FC Liverpool. The Rams FC with a 7-1 record had defeated the Dragons only two weeks earlier in a close 4-3 match. The Dragons were excited for the opportunity at a rematch with the Rams FC in the finals. In a hard fought championship match the Dragons turned on their high powered offense and locked down their defense to come away with a convincing 5-1 victory against a very good, tough and physical Rams FC team.

This latest Dragons’ victory capped off a very successful 2014-2015 winter indoor season. The majority of these boys competed in both the U10 and U12 divisions at the Sherwood Ultra Sports and the Wide World of Indoor Sports facilities during the two winter sessions. The Dragons won all four of their league divisions coming away with four championship trophies.

Coach Bob DaSilva said, “These boys have had a marvelous run these past few months. Their success is a testament to their commitment to practice hard and their desire to continue to improve and grow. I am so proud of these boys and the progress they continue to make.”

In a baseball game that East Providence labeled a must win, things didn’t look good for the Townies in a game against Barrington High last month for several innings. With the score tied at 2, Barrington scored 5 runs in the top half of the 6th inning to take a 7-2 lead. Barrington pitcher Andrew Rodriques was keeping the Townies at bay with an array of slow curves and change-ups. But the Townies bats awakened in the bottom half of the 6th inning as EP exploded for 9 runs to hold on for an 11-7 win. Townie pitcher Kyle Marquis had 7 strikeouts for the complete game win. The Townies have a 4-4 record in their first year back at Division One. EPHS Volleyball: The boys volleyball team opened its season on the road at Tolman and Barrington. The Townies beat Tolman 3-1 (25-11, 2523. 25-27, 25-19) despite struggling offensively. The team then travelled to neighboring Barrington and playing with a little more confidence and fewer errors the Townies won 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-5). EP is in 3rd place with a 4-4 record.

EPHS Boys and Girls Lacrosse The boys Lacrosse is at 1-4 for the year while the girls Lacrosse team is at 1-3 to date.

EPHS Boys Outdoor Track The boys track team is undefeated with a 3-0 record.

EPHS Girls Outdoor Track Outdoor track is in 4th place with a 2-2 record.

Bay View Academy Bay View Lacrosse has a 2-5 record in 4th place. Bay View softball is at 2-3 while in 3rd place. The school is struggling in volleyball at 1-17.

Raising Money for Football Uniforms for EPHS

A committee comprised of EPHS Football team parents, Friends of Townie Athletics Organization members, EP Junior Townies parents and community members has been formed to assist EPHS Football Coach Jay Monteiro in his fundraising efforts for the purpose of purchasing new uniforms for his football team.

The ultimate goal is to raise $15,000. The first fundraising event is a Pasta Dinner which will take place on Friday, May 8, 2015, 6-8 pm, Kanelos Dining Hall, East Providence High School. Tickets are $10 pp. Children under 5 are free. Menu: Pasta, Meatballs, Tossed Salad, Bread and Butter, Desserts and Beverages. Raffles and a Silent Auction will be held throughout the evening.

U12 Division C East Indoor CHAMPIONS AYSO SCORPIONS

On Saturday, March 14, the AYSO U12 Scorpions competitive team finished off the second session at Sherwood Ultra Sports in Seekonk as the Boys U12 C East Champions! The Scorpions battled for first place with Bristol Blackhawks throughout the entire session, leaving both teams hungry for the finals.

With a tie for first place, the Scorpions were matched up to play against a strong and determined, EP United. After a tied 25 minute semi-final, the Scorpions went head to head in a shootout leaving Samuel Warr to defend in net and take the final shot to win the game, 4-3.

Advancing to the finals, the Scorpions faced Bristol Blackhawks once again. Both teams put forth their greatest efforts but the AYSO defense line held strong and pushed the ball forward allowing a strong header into the net by Ryan Amoroso and a remarkable hat trick by Nicholas Bento. At the end of the second half, the AYSO Scorpions were crowned the Division Champions with a 4-2 win. The team is now in their competitive spring season outdoors to face teams throughout Rhode Island.

SCHOOL NEWS Bay View Academy Students Receive Top Awards At Rhode Island Science And Engineering Fair (RISEF) East Providence, RI – Bay View Academy students in Middle and Upper School participated in the Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair on March 21 - 22 at the CCRI - Knight Campus. Six students were award First Grants; nine earned Second Grants; and, two earned Third Grants. Junior Mackenzie DeFaria (Pawtucket, RI) was one of the First Grant award winners, a finalist for Best in Fair, and a special award winner. Lily Gucfa (Rehoboth, MA), grade eight, was a First Grant winner as well, and she also qualified to apply for the Broadcom Masters Competition.

Bay View Upper School students participate in RISEF of their own volition, as an independent research project. According to Janell Johnson, Ph.D. (Cranston, RI), Upper School science teacher, “these projects took months to complete and required an immeasurable amount of intellectual brainstorming and problem solving.” Students who wish to be considered for Bay View’s Chapter of the Excalibur National Honor Society for Excellence in Science are required to have completed a science fair project for RISEF. All eighth grade Middle School students participate in the Bay View science fair. Only the top projects, as judged by a panel of Bay View Upper School faculty, are selected to progress to RISEF. SCHOOL NEWS Martin Middle School News

Due to the number of snow days (6) accumulated, the district agreed to add two of the days on to the end of the school year and the last day of school will be June 24, 2015. The other 4 days will be made up by adding 15 minutes onto the beginning and 15 minutes onto the end of every school day. This began April 16 and will continue through the end of the school year on June 24, 2015. Amended schedules for MMS can be found on the school’s website: epschoolsri.com/martin The Martin Robotics finished off their year of competition recently at the Robot Block Party held at Brown University’s Pizzitola Center. This event held on Saturday, April 11th was a celebration of Nat’l Robotics Week and our squad from Martin, arrived early and were well represented. Thank you to all the Robotic Team members, volunteers, and Mr. Hargreaves for another successful year.

Robotic elephant designed and programmed by students, Congratulations to Kya Abatiello, winner of the 2015 ARTS Scholarship Award! PPAC, Providence Performing Arts Center’s ARTS Scholarships program provides an opportunity for talented Rhode Island youth to attend local summer arts education programs to broaden their artistic experiences in a chosen area of study.

The program began in 1996 when a portion of the proceeds from the First Annual Greater Providence Gospel Fest was designated for arts scholarships for 10 Providence Students. Since then, 468 scholarships have been awarded. Kya will be recognized, along with other winners throughout the state, on Monday, May 4th at PPAC. For the second consecutive year, one of our Martin Middle School students has been chosen to receive an ARTS Scholarship.

Way to go, Kya! Congratulations also goes out to the 8th grade students who successfully completed the 21st Century Technology Assessment. Martin Middle School scored well above the state average score of 294. Students who are “proficient” score between 300- 400 points. The MMS overall score was 317! This RI state requirement allows students to showcase their computer skills in 6 different curriculum areas: creativity/innovation, critical thinking/ problem solving, research/information fluency, technology operations/concepts, digital citizenship, communication/collaboration.

Martin Middle has gone green with our new “Green Machine”, a hydroponic plant unit that houses up to 64 plants. A gift received from Acopia Harvest International for hosting the Eat Healthy RI kickoff in March, we are just finishing our first harvest of with the machine that yield basil, honey basil, kale and a tomato plant. The best part of the experience is that the harvest of basil and lemon basil has been donated back to the school’s kitchen for use.

During the past month, students from Ms. Letendre and Mr. Riley’s 6th grade Science classes spent an overnight trip to Alton Jones Campus at URI. Studying nature up close in a beautiful setting, students learned about the living and non-living parts of

At Alton Jones, students gain an understanding and appreciation of the natural world while learning about themselves and working collaboratively with others. Thank you to both teachers and the many parents and family members who assisted in chaperoning the event.

The second round of PARCC testing (the End of Year Assessment) will begin on May 11th. This round will be shorter with just 2 tests each in English Language Arts and Math. 8th grade students will also be taking Science NECAP Assessments from May 5th-7th.

Saint Margaret School’s Scientists in the Making

As Principal of Saint Margaret School in Rumford, I get a tremendous sense of joy when students develop a passion for STEM education. STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, is a critical component of a child’s education. Sadly, employers have difficulty in filling high-skill jobs, and American students are falling behind their global peers in STEM subjects.

If you look at the stats, we need to get better as a nation in supporting students in STEM learning. It is to the benefit of students individually and to us as a society. On the individual level, a student who chooses to pursue a strong education in STEM typically enjoys better career prospects with higher earnings potential and greater job security. On a societal level, it is vital that the U.S. has the highly-skilled workers necessary for continued innovation on the world stage.

According to the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), jobs in computer systems design and other related services that are reliant on strong foundations in math and problem solving are expected to grow by 45% by 2018. At the same time, the U.S. may be short three million highly-skilled workers also by 2018, based on data from NMSI. A shortage of skilled workers doesn’t bode well for society or for our country’s competitive edge in the global economy.

Educators, professionals and parents alike can all help inspire students’ passion for STEM subjects. This will help students develop necessary 21st century life skills, and build upon their innate sense of wonder and awe in understanding the world around them.

As a Principal, I enjoy seeing the progress that students make and the hard work they put into their studies every day. Recently,

our 8 grade class displayed the culmination of their work, after months of research, in Saint Margaret School’s Annual Science and Engineering Fair. Students chose a topic, developed a project idea, created a research plan, and conducted experiments to test their theories under the guidance of our science teacher Dr. Helen Flavin.

In preparation for the fair, students searched a wealth of data, designed a question to be tested, and enjoyed finding out that they too can find their own answers. Such inquiry promotes creativity and innovation. Whether one grows up to be a scientist or not, the ability to imagine and then design solutions allows someone to take his or her dreams and use them to transform our world.

We can all help to spark that joy of exploring STEM subjects for today’s students and those of tomorrow. We also need to celebrate and encourage students’ achievements. So I’d be remiss not to recognize and congratulate the winners of this year’s Annual Science and Engineering Fair at Saint Margaret School.

I would like to congratulate the following students, and frankly all of the 8th grade class, for their outstanding work this year in becoming scientists in the making. All of Saint Margaret School’s winners had the chance to compete in the Rhode Island State Science Fair, which took place on March 21, 2015. th

From the State House Rep. Amore Bill Keeps Guns Out Of the Hands of Violent Domestic Abusers STATE HOUSE – Nearly two-thirds of female homicide victims killed with firearms were killed by an intimate partner, according to the Violence Policy Center.

According to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, domestic violence victims are five times more likely to be killed by their abuser if the abuser is a firearms owner.

The clear solution, according to Rep. Gregg Amore (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), is to get firearms out of the hands of violent domestic offenders.

“I understand the concerns of individuals who think that any attempt to restrict firearm ownership is a potential slippery slope,” said Representative Amore. “Yet in domestic violence situations, allowing individuals convicted of an offense to own a weapon is turning a blind eye to the potential danger that can, and often does, result. I believe, in this case, we must err on the side of protecting lives.”

Representative Amore this year has introduced legislation, 2015-H 5872, which will prohibit from purchasing, owning or possessing a firearm any individual who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence. The legislation adds domestic violence offenses to state law that already bars gun ownership for those convicted, in this state or elsewhere, of other crimes of violence.

“We need to take guns out of the hands of abusive people,” said Representative Amore, whose bill is supported by the Office of the Attorney General and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Enactment of the legislation would bring Rhode Island in line with federal law that bars people convicted of domestic violence from owning or buying a gun. It would also add Rhode Island to the list of 15 states and the District of Columbia which already have such a prohibition.

Under the legislation, which was heard recently by the House Committee on Judiciary, offenses punishable as petty misdemeanors (such as domestic disorderly conduct) would be excluded from the firearm prohibition. The bill also provides that an individual who has had a conviction expunged or set aside or whose civil rights have been restored would not be considered a prohibited person.

“I think all rational people can see the merit of barring violent domestic abusers from having guns and the need, as a result, to enact this legislation to bring clarity to the law and to increase recognition of the danger domestic violence victims face from armed abusers,” said Representative Amore. In fact, he said, a recent poll by the New England Journal of Medicine found that more than 73 percent of gun owners and more than 72 percent of non-gun owners support a 10-year prohibition of gun ownership after a domestic violence conviction.

“I believe this legislation will achieve one important goal – to add more protection for victims of domestic violence against their aggressors,” he said.

Held by the Judiciary Committee for further study, the bill’s co-sponsors include Rep. Christopher R. Blazejewski (D-Dist. 2, Providence), Rep. Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence), Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence) and Rep. Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown).

Representative Amore, who is serving his second term in the House of Representatives, is a member of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare, the House Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Municipal Government. He is also, this session, a Deputy Majority Leader.

Their role is defined as a link between children, families, schools and medical professionals. They are literally the last line of defense in preventing tragic events from taking place within our schools.”

Rep. Kazarian’s bill would require at least one full-time certified school social worker for every 400 students within a school. Last year, the School Social Work Association of America endorsed a model which recommends one social worker for every 250 students. Currently, Rhode Island’s Board of Regents Regulations for Elementary & Secondary Education Governing the Education of Children with Disabilities only requires a school district with 2,500 enrolled students to employ one full-time social worker.

“School shootings are all too common these days. We need to do a better job of providing services that will prevent such horrific events from ever happening again,” added Rep. Kazarian.

Dennis Michael Hicks Jr., 38, died April 6, 2015, after a courageous fight against Ewing Sarcoma bone cancer.

Dennis had a great passion for fishing, boating and water sports. He was well known for having the loudest cheer at his friend’s and children’s sporting events.

Dennis loved the quiet country life with the odd mix of animals he and his wife raised.

He was a respected diesel mechanic, employed at Winnipesaukee Truck in Belmont, his second home and family. Before moving to New Hampshire, Dennis worked for Miller Truck Service in Central Falls and Altrui Brothers Truck Sales of East Providence, Rhode Island. He also had previously worked for Morin’s Catering in Attleboro.

Dennis’s memories will carry on through his wife, Jennifer (Tobin) Hicks; his son Ryder, daughter Jorja, and stepdaughters Morgan and Riley. Dennis leaves his parents, Dennis and Donna Hicks of Delaware and in-laws Bill and Faith Tobin of New Hampshire; brother, Jay Souza and wife Amanda and their children, Anna, Peter, and Nicholas of Massachusetts. He was the first born grandchild of Gus and Marie Hicks, of Seekonk.

Dennis’s friends and family will miss his amazing smile and blue eyes, his contagious laugh, his energetic spirit, his hard work ethic, his crazy dancing and most of all his courage. He left us too soon.

Dennis graduated from Seekonk High School in the early nineties.

A memorial service was held in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

A private service will be held later in the spring.

East Providence Senior Center News Older Americans Month “Get into the Act”

Each May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions to the nation. In honor of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA), we are focused on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. The theme for Older Americans Month 2015 is “Get into the Act.” The OAA was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965. It provides a nationwide aging services network and funding that helps older adults live with dignity in the communities of their choice for as long as possible. These services include home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver support, community-based assistance, preventive health services, personal care, transportation, job training, ombudsman services, legal assistance, and elder abuse prevention. By providing a variety of resources in these areas, ACL works year-round to support the goals of the OAA. We hope to use this Older Americans Month as a vehicle for individual and community empowerment. By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.”

I’m just beginning to read food labels as I’ve been told by my doctor that my blood sugar is too high and I shouldn’t eat sugar because of my diabetes and weight. I’m always careful to buy the foods that are labeled, “Sugar Free”, however after I eat these foods my blood sugar is still high and they tend to upset my stomach. What do you think I’m doing wrong?

When you eat carbohy- drates your body digests them and breaks them apart into sugars, then the sugar is absorbed into your blood as blood sugar. It is blood sugar which, with the help of insulin, gets into your cells and provides you with energy for all that you do. Just by staying away from foods containing sugar on the la- bels will not keep your blood sugar from going up especially if these foods contain a good deal of carbohydrates.

When you’re looking at a label, look first at the Serving Size, then the Total Carbohydrates. This will tell you have many grams of carbohydrates are found in the serving size that is listed. It is important to keep in mind and remember that the grams of dietary fiber and sugar which are found below the Total Carbohydrate are all included in that grams of Total Carbohydrate listed above. Fiber will help to decrease the spike of your blood sugar and choosing foods high in fiber will have all types of healthy benefits. It is an adaptable tool that you can use to track the carbohy- drates you eat and will help you manage your blood glucose and/or lose some weight. Understanding food labels and making healthy food choices is a learning process.

The bottom line is that, “Sugar Free” does not mean “Carbohydrate Free”. It is unfortunate that manufactures and advertiser know how to attract the buyers by splashing across the front of a package, “Sugar Free”. Another fact that many people don’t realize is that often manufacture will remove sugar from the recipe and sweeten the food with sugar alco- hols. Sugar alcohols also can effect some people in a negative way by making them have diarrhea or get very bloated or gassy. Sugar alcohols do produce a smaller rise in blood glucose compared to carbohydrates but if used should be used with caution until you understand how these ingredients affect ones system.

I would encourage you to meet with the Educators and attend one of the diabetes classes at the Health, Nutrition and Diabetes Education Office at the center to answer these and any other questions you might have about reading food labels, weight loss and diabetes.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service.

Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountain areas.

In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with relatives and others. There often is a religious service and a picnic-like “dinner on the ground,” the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass.

It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the “memorial day” idea.

“It almost looks like a slow-motion dance,” says Mary L. Jurisson, MD, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, who has taught Tai Chi. When you do Tai Chi, you do a series of exercises that flow from one to another, with emphasis on proper posture. “When you watch people doing Tai Chi, you’ll notice that they shift very smoothly and gracefully from one position to another,” Jurisson says.

You can take Tai Chi classes in a group.

You don’t need a partner for most moves, though Tai Chi’s “push hands practice” involves working in pairs.

There are many types of Tai Chi; the Yang style is the most popular. All include circular motions and concentration on breath patterns.

Beginners spend time committing specific moves to memory. Later, students learn to develop flow while improving balance and “energetic connection,” says Gene Nelson, a certified master instructor and founder of Empire Tai Chi in Westchester, NY. Tai Chi uses big and small movements, often at the same time. “A single move might require you to step one way and turn your body another while moving your arms in different directions and softly transitioning between legs,” Nelson says.
