TOWNIE Grassroots Fundraising In His Own Words, John Carnevale

John Carnevale recording progress.

By Bob Rodericks "EPHS graduates, John Carnevale, Joe Wahl and others continue their grassroots efforts to rehab the 60 year old EPHS gymnasium. This effort, which is ongoing, held a huge rally on June 22nd at the Whiskey Republic waterfront restaurant in Providence, RI. Thousands came out and donated to the cause. Following is a statement from organizer John Carnevale: "You all showed RI how to party and totally set this whole project (TOWNIE PROJECT) off in RI!! You did a fantastic job blowing this thing off the map and creating an event that will be remembered for a longtime by so many!! This thing lived far past any hype; we said we were going to go big and we certainly backed it up!! The food was unreal!! The music was pumping; the bands did an excellent job and the DJs had the crowd jumping! And because of that great atmosphere that everyone created there was absolutely no violence and no bull at all!! You guys created a party environment that everyone could enjoy and totally let go if they wanted and that is something to be said about this team and how Rhode Islanders can really come together and totally ROCK OUT!! All the hard work paid off and I am so proud of the UNITY and TEAMWORK that I witnessed that night and throughout this whole project! There were really a few times when I had to catch my breath because I knew that we had truly done something far more than important than the building of a structure or reaching a specific dollar amount for donations. East Providence News Briefs By Bob Rodericks

EP Fire Chief ’s Position Delayed

Elmasian in post for 7 Months - Is a Candidate

Captain Oscar Elmasian has held many posts within the East Providence Fire Department during his 27 years there. He also was a union president and was named a Captain. He was recently named Acting Fire Chief and for some 7 months has begun overseeing many projects including station renovations and updating policies. “I love being a firefighter and would now be honored to lead my department as their Chief,” Elmasian told the Reporter. “My guys are supportive and we are getting along very well.” Others have told the Reporter that “things are very efficient, there are no controversies in the (fire) department.” However, the Reporter has learned that the city budget commission wants the city to advertise outside of the department before anyone is hired as new chief. “There aren’t many applicants because the department supports Elmasian for the Chief’s job,” said one source close to this matter. While many in the city were expecting Elmasian to be elevated from Acting Fire Chief to permanent Chief by now, the budget commission is not ready to approve his promotion. It wasn’t on the commission docket for discussion at its June 27th meeting, but commission chair Diane Brennan said she had a “general announcement” to make. Without referring to the vacant fire chief’s position, Brennan told the city manager and other staffers to make sure all “senior management positions” are announced on the city web as well as internally amongst the city staff. “We (the commission) are making a statement. The local candidate may be the best but you need transparency,” Brennan told the city senior staff. CityManager Peter Graczykowski told the commission that he disagreed with this statement. “I understand and agree with the importance of transparency in hiring, but it can’t always be expected to widely advertise when city ordinances direct us to hire from within, if qualified candidates exist,” said Graczykowski. He, too, wouldn’t speak about the fire chief’s open position, but maintained that he needed flexibility in hiring. “If we don’t have a great internal candidate for a job, then I accept a wider posting process. But it seems to be a waste of time if a good local candidate interviews well and could be promoted.” Ward 4 councilwoman Chrissy Rossi asked from the audience if the state does the same with every job opening they have. The commission did not directly answer her query. “It is surprising to me that one wouldn’t want to post nationally. It invites criticism not to do so,” answered commission point person Christy Healey. Commission chair Brennan said that she was unaware the city hadn’t advertised nationally for its’ new fire chief. I’m aware that the current acting chief is doing an exemplary job. He has every chance to come through the process. They (the city) should put it on the web today, tonight”, she said. The matter seems to be left up in the air. The commission’s edict wasn’t voted on and Graczykowski seemed unsure of the next step. Elmasian was at the meeting and seemed a bit concerned during the discussion. Asked for his comments afterwards, he replied that, “My only priorities now are the morale of my guys and the continued supervision of our many projects. I’m confident in the appointment process.”

EPHS Pool Closed, May be Privatized

As reported earlier in The ReporterToday.com, the East Providence High School Pool is in such bad repair that it was closed down indefinitely. The pool structure underneath has several areas of crumbling cement and rusting rebar supports. Although $700,000 in bond monies was recently spent to replace windows, lighting and other energy saving measures, it seems that no real attention was given to the over 60 year old pools’ physical structure which has gotten spot repairs over the years. The pool is housed in its own structure or wing of the high school and has a full ‘basement’ access underneath the pool and deck area for maintenance. A recent walk through of the area by The Reporter revealed rusting support rods and areas of crumbling cement. The area was also strewn with debris. School officials are afraid that the pools’ condition will prevent the city from receiving required academic certification if it remains open. The pool does not meet handicap regulations, although there is an area prepared for such, which has never been completed. “We could have been easily met this requirement before but no one acted on it,” said one source close to the situation. It has been yet another blow to the ailing and aging structure. After continued on next page...

receiving preliminary architectural estimates that it will take between 3.7 and 4 Million dollars to repair the pool, the school committee has voted to shut down the pool. In a new development, school officials are considering an offer to “privatize” or allow a private company to take effective ownership of the pool. This company would operate the pool for profit after allowing student swim classes to take place as before. After hours the pool would be rented out to independent parties for a profit. In turn, this company will make the necessary repairs and continue maintenance of the pool and pool area. Cumberland High School has entered into a similar agreement after its’ pool also needed much repair. Although engineering reports put pool repairs in the area of $3 to $4 million, the private pool company thinks the overall structure can be worked with and initially fixed for a lot less. “We were told that the pool is not compliant now with (Americans with Disabilities Act) ADA standards. We also received a pretty damaging report on the high school pool’s grim list of problems,” said school committee chair Joel Monteiro. Monteiro and the committee were told that the pool has “serious structural deficiencies.” The concrete walls and supports that hold up the pool and the decking surrounding the pool are in serious dis-repair. “Yes, worst case is that the weight of the water could cause the pool to collapse along with the walk around decking,” said Monteiro. “The roof seems ok but the steel beams should be sandblasted. That could cause more trouble,” he said. The School Board Chairman was concerned with the appearance that prior preventative maintenance had been seemingly neglected. “There was no major annual preventative maintenance done for years, we believe. It was

not a focus of previous administrations or school committees.” The city had recently contracted with Johnson Controls Engineering to spend “a lot of money upgrading the pool.” The energy savings plan included new windows, lighting, etc., which is intended to save the city money in energy costs. “No one evidently asked seriously about the structural condition of the area. This should have been questioned for some time,” said Monteiro. “A lot of stuff was evidently swept under the rug for years.” Sandy Gorham, a physical education/swim teacher and long time swimming coach and expert in East Providence and elsewhere in Rhode Island, was saddened at the pool’s fate. “I am very disappointed at these developments,” he said. “The private thing has worked in Cumberland, maybe it’s’ our only hope.” Indeed, privatizing the pool may be the only option available to the cash strapped city. “The alternative may be to close it down for good.”

School Committee Nullifies Bradley/EP Contract

Program to continue. “Outdate Agreement Must Go” - Joel Monteiro, Chair School Board

The School Committee voted to not automatically renew its’ current “partnership” contract with Bradley Hospital at a special May 30th meeting at City Hall. The school department had until May 31st to nullify the current contract or it would automatically rollover. “We have a lot of questions with the Bradley partnership and we didn’t want to lock the city into financial difficulty,” school board chairman Joel Monteiro told the Reporter. “We do support this partnership to serve our students but need to look closer at our funding structure. All parties, including Bradley Hospital, agreed with this direction. We all felt that the current contract may have included inflated dollars to cover prior deficits in the history of the program,” Monteiro added. “The agreement crafted by Mario Cirillo and Lonnie Barham (former Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer) is a problem and is outdated and must be redone,” he added. A prior multi-million dollar unpaid bill from Bradley to city officials was a major reason for school and city funding problems. The state budget commission eventually helped to settle that bill with Bradley and Monteiro and the committee aim to avoid a similar problem. “We will protect our programs and develop a more realistic funding formula moving forward,” said Monteiro. Monteiro is a non-voting member of the city/state budget commission. The program formerly housed at Riverside Middle School is now located at Martin Middle School.

Council Votes to Limit Meeting Length to 10 PM Curfew Rossi-Briden City Council Rift Widens/Council Approves Sale of Riverside Vacant Lots

The city council accepted Mayor Jim Briden’s request to end all council meetings at 10 PM, no matter where the council is with their agenda. Briden said that he is impressed with the efficient manner in which the budget commission holds its’ meetings and wants to prevent meetings that may go long into the night. Joining Mayor Briden in voting for the 10 PM curfew were councilors Tom Rose and Helder Cunha. Members Chrissy Rossi and Tracy Capobianco voted against the measure. Rossi and Capobianco feel that members of the public are being shut off from public debate. The council vote does allow for a 15 minute extension upon a 4-1 super majority council vote. “That won’t happen much”, said Rossi. Rossi was extremely upset as she expressed after the meeting. “It is my opinion that two egregious acts were taken at the council meeting. First, the good folks of Harding Ave. in Riverside were kicked in the teeth by Tommy Rose, James Briden and Helder Cunha. They voted to go through with the sale of the two vacant lots on Harding Ave. Two weeks ago, Tommy and Helder abstained from a vote because they didn’t have enough information. Tracy Adams Capobianco and myself voted to take the properties off the market and James Briden voted no. The vote passed 2 to 1. The street is only 16 feet wide. These lots have been vacant since the hurricane of 1954 dropped the houses that used to occupy them into Sabin’s Point. There are residents that have lived there over 50 years. The residents were allowed by previous council’s votes to park their cars there. They will now have to park on this narrow street. Safety vehicles do not even fit on the street. In the past, rescues have had to park down the bottom of Beach Road and wheel the sick/ injured down the street. The residents were supposed to be notified by City Hall if there was ever any change in status like selling these properties. They were never notified. They have tried 4 separate times over the years to purchase these properties. They were denied. It is a very sad day,” said and exasperated Rossi. Additionally, Rossi says that the new curfew rule will stifle public discussion. “The city council now has a curfew of 10:00 p.m. If we don’t finish our business by 10:00, we must vote in 15 minute increments to extend the meeting. It must be a super majority vote (4 - 1). If we don’t vote to extend the meeting, the council president (James Briden) will decide when we will get to hear the rest of the docket items,” explained Rossi. “I am disgusted by these actions and sad that I have no power to end the stupidity. Imagine telling your boss that you are only going to work until 4:00. If the project doesn’t get finished in time, oh-well. It will just have to wait 2 to 4 weeks and then only get finished if you feel like picking it up again. I’d bet you would be gone before the second week right?” asked Rossi. Sick! The vote to sell the empty lots in Riverside also followed along the same 3-2 vote as the curfew. Mayor Briden and city solicitor Tim Chapman cited possible litigation if the parcels were not allowed for sale.

Another School Administration Change. Another Pawtucket Recruit.

The Pawtucket to East Providence carousel of administrative positions continues to revolve for the school department as Cheryl Ursillo has resigned her post as Director of Special Education. Eileen Crudele was hired as the new Director of Pupil Personnel, which is essentially a Special Education Director. Crudele comes to East Providence from Pawtucket, where she worked with Mercer before. Ursillo, who is retired from another system, has been working in East Providence as an “Interim” for three years. Ursillo was never officially hired by a school committee, rather, was brought on by former Superintendent Dr. Mario Cirillo as an interim appointment. Former school committee member and current council member Chrissy Rossi once asked Ursillo, “when did we hire you?” Ursillo responded that, “I wasn’t hired. I’m an at-will employee. I’m at your will and at my will.” Sources indicate that there was no specific problem between Ursillo and new Superintendent Kim Mercer. Ursillo “was told that her role would end at the end of June and she chose to resign beforehand.” New Superintendent Mercer wanted to fill the special needs position on a permanent basis. The school department received budget commission approval to fill this job at its’ June 27th meeting. Crudele will be paid $108,000 annually plus benefits. Beth Salzillo a former EP teacher and reading supervisor, then curriculum director, recently left for a curriculum post in Pawtucket schools. Dawn August (curriculum) and Julie Motta (administration) have recently been hired by new EP superintendent, Kim Mercer. All three worked in Pawtucket schools before coming to East Providence. Steve Fratiello, who was brought on as a consultant and eventually became the EP school department controller, has resigned to take a similar post with Pawtucket schools.

Letters to the Editor... Thank You, Volunteers!

On May 25, the American Legion Riverside Post 10 replaced over 1,000 flags at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery with the assistance of 25-30 volunteers. This takes normally takes about 3 hours to accomplish, but with the hard work and dedication of these volunteers, we were able to finish in about half the time. This was also in addition to less than ideal weather with rain and wind, but they worked through it. These wonderful people ignored the weather because they knew they were helping to honor those that have served this nation and are no longer with us. On behalf of the American Legion, I would like to personally thank all those that assisted us: East Providence/Seekonk Rotary, Lyons Club, Daniela Costa, Haley Costa, Jillian Viera, Joshua Concepcion, and RI State Representative Greg Amore. I apologize if I forgot to mention anybody; your assistance did not go unnoticed. Once again thank you to all who helped replace flags. From the CVME

The Cape Verdean Museum Exhibit will hold its 4th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, July 8, 2013 at the Crestwood Country Club, 90 Wheeler Street, Rehoboth, Massachusetts. The Cape Verdean Museum Exhibit (CVME) is dedicated to celebrating the history and culture of Cape Verde and Cape Verdean-Americans. The museum, the first of its kind in the country, was founded in 2003. We are a 501(C) 3 institution, defined as a non-profit organization created and operated exclusively for preservation of the Cape Verdean history and educational purposes. The CVME has grown a great deal in the last eight years. We have had visitors and donations from all over the world but now the museum has reached full capacity in its current location. Our goal is to keep this momentum of people and gifts flowing by moving to a new home where we can display more of our collection and expand into new areas as a cultural institution. We also feel that this move will allow us to play a larger role in the communities. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Cape Verdean Education Fund. We hope that you will partner with us to make the Cape Verdean Museum 4th Annual Golf Classic a successful event. Please visit our website at ww.capeverdeanmuseum.org for sponsorship and registration forms. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD is an anxiety disorder that some people develop after witnessing or living through a dangerous and/or traumatic event. The healthy “fight or flight” reaction, which is meant to protect a person from harm, is short-circuited or damaged, and those affected may continue to feel stressed or afraid even when they are no longer in danger. Others may develop PTSD after a friend or family member experiences the danger or is harmed. PTSD can affect anyone at any age and can develop after a physical/sexual assault, accident, abuse, disaster, and/or witnessing acts of war/ terrorism. Some people with PTSD don’t show any symptoms for weeks or months after the event. If symptoms last for more than a few weeks, they might be PTSD. Symptoms of PTSD are grouped into three main categories. They include: Re-experiencing symptoms: such as flashbacks, bad dreams, and frightening thoughts. These may cause problems in a person’s everyday routine. Words, objects, or situations that are reminders of the event can also trigger re-experiencing. Avoidance symptoms: such as staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the experience, feeling emotionally numb, feeling strong guilt/depression/worry, losing interest in activities that were once enjoyable, and/or having trouble remembering the dangerous event. These types of symptoms may cause a person to change his or her personal routine. Hyperarousal symptoms: such as being easily startled, feeling tense or “on edge”, having angry outbursts, and/or having difficulty sleeping. These are usually constant, instead of being triggered by reminders of the event. They make it hard to do daily tasks. Children and teens may have extreme reactions to trauma, but their symptoms may not be the same as adults. In very young children, these symptoms may include: bedwetting, forgetting how or being unable to speak, acting out the scary event during playtime, and/or being unusually clingy with a parent or other adult. Older children and teens project symptoms similar to adults, but may also develop disruptive, disrespectful, or destructive behaviors. If you know someone who has PTSD, it can affect you as well. There are many things you can to do help: It is critical that the individual receives the correct diagnosis and treatment. An appointment with a mental health provider is key to successfully determining the situation and methods for recovery. Offer emotional support, understanding, patience, and encouragement. Talk to your friend/family member and listen carefully. Be understanding of situations that may trigger PTSD symptoms.

11

Invite him/her out for positive distractions such as walks, outings, and other activities Remind him/her that with time and treatment, he/she can recover. If you are experiencing PTSD symptoms, now is the time to take steps to help yourself. Speak with a mental health provider about treatment options. Engage in activities or exercise to help reduce stress. Set realistic goals for yourself. Break up large tasks into smaller ones, set some priorities, and do what you can, when you can. Try to spend time with other people and confide in a trusted friend/relative. Tell them about things that can trigger symptoms. Expect your symptoms to improve gradually, not immediately. Access to Care When You Need It: East Bay Center clinicians are always available by scheduled appointment or through the Center’s “Walk-in” model of care to assist adults, children, and their families through any number of complicated issues. Conveniently located in East Providence on the Wampanoag Trail – help is just around the corner. We encourage you to visit our website at www.eastbay.org for information regarding services, employment, locations, etc. To speak to someone regarding services or to schedule an appointment, please call 401-246-1195 and ask for “Intake”. Club News & Announcements East Providence Historical Society

EPHS SUMMER “2nd SUNDAY” OPEN HOUSES: John Hunt House: Sundays – July 14th – August 11Th - September 8th OPEN FROM 1 - 3:30 PM

“2nd Sunday” in July coincides with the URI Master Gardener Statewide Tour and Hunt House and its gardens will be featured on the tour, July 13 -14. Master gardeners from the URI program will be on hand to welcome visitors and answer questions all weekend from 10-4pm. The Ten Mile River group will also be on hand to answer questions about the Denil fish ladder. If you are a gardener or just enjoy flowers, take this opportunity to drop by and add to your gardening knowledge. The Hunt House will be open for tours on Sunday afternoon only. Featured this summer is the Rumford collection, including the new Sellew exhibit, and the history/interior photos of the Odd Fellows building on Warren Avenue. Come take the interactive quiz for the new Rumford exhibit, weigh in with your opinion about how the Odd Fellows hall might be reused, and don’t forget to look for the EPHS featured in the summer edition of “Edible Rhody.” The EPHS is a volunteer organization in its 47th year which is dedicated to the preservation of local history. We maintain the 18th century John Hunt House Museum/ genealogy library at the Hunts Mills local historic district - 65 Hunts Mills Road, participate in the URI Master Gardening program, and provide educational programs open to the public. Hunt House Museum is open to all on the “2nd Sunday” of every month from 1-3:30 pm and by appointment. For more information visit www.ephist.org or call 438-1750

A Herring Tale: Part III

Once upon a time there was a fish ladder which didn’t seem to work. However, those patient folks among us like David Lovett stayed quietly enough at the ladder to see fish at the base of the ladder and in the lower portion of the resting pool. That would mean that it is actually true: ”If you build it, they will come.” Other counters saw fish in the ladder also, so we now know that there are intrepid herring which have found a way up the falls at Herring Rock. This news is most gratifying for all the folks who have worked very hard to make the Ten Mile a fishway once again.

If you grew up in the Ferris Avenue area of Rumford you no doubt played/hung out at the RRR behind the Rock ball field. There is a group of members who is interested in recreating the history of the place and will be looking for artifacts/memories if you would like to share them. Mike Reynolds, Jesse Albright, Ned Connors, Keith Gonsalves, and Anne Linde are leading this effort. The treasure trove of articles of course was held by our fondly remembered member John Agren (Anne’s brother) and his wife Rachel. John was working on a presentation for EPHS the spring he died. We hope this group will have something to present to us come next spring – wouldn’t a walking tour be fun?

East Providence Resident to perform in Hollywood Arms

The Community Players round out their 92nd season with the touching comedy-drama, Hollywood Arms. Co-written by the legendary comedian/actress Carol Burnett and her late daughter, Carrie Hamilton, the play is set in Hollywood in the 1940’s, and is loosely based on Burnett’s memoir and real-life relatives: a beautiful but alcoholic mother determined to pursue a writing career; a demanding Christian Scientist grandmother; an absentee father with his own demons; and Burnett’s alter-ego Helen, a young girl who escapes to the rooftop of their grungy tenement where she creates her own world and dreams of a life in show business. Both poignant and hilarious, Hollywood Arms is a glimpse into the first moments when one of America’s funniest women became a star. The production features East Providence resident Kimberly Rau Harper as Louise, Helen’s troubled mother.

The EPHS Boys Outdoor Track & Field team completed their season long mission by winning their first Rhode Island State Track & Field Championship in 17 years and fifth title in school history. The Townies came up big in what many observers are calling the most exciting RI State Track & Field meet ever contested. The Townies spent the entire day battling arch rival Bishop Hendricken and North Kingstown in what turned out to be a three team race for the state crown. The meet came down to the final event the 4x400 Meter relay. The Townies entered the final event trailing Bishop Hendricken by two points and clinging to a six point lead over North Kingstown. In order to win the meet the Townies had to defeat Bishop Hendricken in the 4x400 Meter Relay and finish no further than one spot below the number one seeded 4x400 Meter Relay in the state, North Kingstown (Bishop Hendricken was the number two seed). Thanks to a monumental effort in which they shaved an incredible five seconds off their previous best time, the Townies passed Bishop Hendricken on the final lap and finished second to North Kingstown in the 4x400 Meter relay. The results of the race pushed the Townies past Bishop Hendricken and North Kingstown by a score of 69-65 (Hendricken and North Kingstown tied for second). The victory was doubly sweet for the Townies as it ended a 17 year state track & field title drought and also gave them the respect they sought all year. In a meet where every point was at a premium the following Townies either won or placed; Ryan Williams 1st place and state champion in both the 100 Meter and 200 Meter. It should also be noted that Ryan finished the year undefeated in both races. Josh Rambert 1st place and state champion in the 110 Meter High Hurdles, 2nd place and second team All-State in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles. Chris Moura 2nd place and 2nd team All-State in the Long Jump, 3rd place and third team All-State in the Triple Jump. Trystan Casey 5th place in the Triple Jump, Jay Andrade 6th place in the 800 Meter out of the unseeded heat which is a major accomplishment. The 4x400 Meter Relay team consisting of Jay Andrade, Alex Duarte, Chris Moura and Josh Rambert 2nd place and second team All-State. The 4x100 Meter Relay team consisting of Chris Moura, Josh Rambert, Trystan Casey and Ryan Williams 3rd place and 3rd team All-State. All team

Coach Lyons, RI Coach of the Year

The Boys Outdoor Track & Field team’s seson of success continued at the recent Rhode Island Track Coaches Association Outdoor Track & Field Awards Banquet. During the evening the Townies were fortunate to win two of the evening’s top awards, Ryan Williams was named the Sprints MVP of the 2013 State Championship Meet and Coach Bob Lyons was named the 2013 Rhode Island Boys’ Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year. In addition the following Townie athletes were recognized for achieving All-State honors during the 2013 Outdoor Track & Field season; Chris Moura, Josh Rambert, Jay Andrade, Ryan Williams Trystan Casey, and Alex Duarte. EPHS baseball and softball teams have ended their postseason marches towards state championships. Softball lost to TollGate by a 4-1 score. Jessie Brosnahan led the Titans offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Brianna Allienello had three hits for the Townies as EP finished the year very strong year in a competitive Division with a final 14-8 record. Baseball finished the year with a 17-3 record losing to Westerly by a 2-1 score, to end championship hopes. The game was not without controversy. In a column by Bob Marr of the Westerly Sun Newspaper, he wrote: “The game was tense and exciting throughout and there was a major controversial call in the fifth inning. Trailing since a first-inning home run by Over 20 Years in Business catcher Nate Cahoone, the visiting Townies A Full Service Automotive & Fleet Repair Shop loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth inning. Cleanup hitter Collin Costa ripped the first pitch from Bulldog starter Vinny Terranova to medium deep left field. The ball hooked toward the left-field foul line and landed extremely close to it. The home plate umpire ruled it a foul ball, touching off a stormy protest by East Providence and its fans. “Baseball is a game of inches. We won that game, I’m telling you,” Bob Rodericks said after a fairly long postgame chat with his team. “It’s not up to umpires, we don’t blame umpires. That was a fair ball, everybody knew it except the home plate umpire because he didn’t really get in the 205 North Brow St. (Next to Munroe Dairy) • East Providence, RI We are an best position. July 2013 on the line. Everybody knew it except the one guy that counted. That’s all I’ve got to say.” After he was brought back to the plate, Costa hit a sacrifice fly to right that tied the score 1-1. As far as the ball being fair or foul, Cahoone said: “I thought it was borderline. I really couldn’t tell because the grass was high.” (from the Westerly Sun). In an exciting playoff win, East Providence baseball avenged its’ 2-1 loss to Tiverton by beating Tiverton in a re-match on June 6th by a 3-2 score. With the game tied at 2 in the last inning, Jasiah Hatch singled. The Townies were aggressive, as they have been all season, as Hatch stole second and then third base. With two outs, Townie batting leader Nick Karalekas knocked in Hatch with the winning run with an infield single. The Townies were outhit by Tiverton 7-5. “We didn’t hit well but a win is a win,” assistant coach Chris Kennedy told the jubilant players after the game. Kyle Marquis was the starting pitcher for EP and was relieved by Keith Grant. EPHS Townies softball had an impressive run into the state playoffs. Softball lost to TollGate by a 4-1 score. Jessie Brosnahan led the Titans offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Brianna Allienello had three hits for the Townies as EP finished the year very strong year in a competitive Division with a final 14-8 record.

EPHS Volleyball Does Well But Lose in Playoffs

The EPHS Volleyball team shut out Chariho in playoff action 3-0 (25-21, 21-13, 21-13). “We got off to an extremely slow start going down 10-3 in game one,” said 11 year veteran coach Keith Martinous. “But John Vaughan III had a monster middle hit that sparked a turnaround and we battled back to take game one 25-21,” he added. The Townies were never behind again. “In games 2 and 3 we played with a lead for the rest of the night. Our offense was led by Jacob Bedford (8 kills, 10 digs), John Vaughan III (5 kills, 5 blocks), Lucas Flavin (4 kills), Brandon Pietruszka (3 kills, 15 digs, 1 block). Junior setter Will Schofield had a solid night with 20 assists, 2 kills, and a block and defensively Mike Monagle and Anthony Oliviera picked up 3 digs each while Jacob Perkins added 2 blocks.” Martinous credited Chariho as a worthy opponent. “Chariho played tremendously, and their outside hitters had a fantastic night.” The Townies were eventually eliminated by final contender, South Kingstown. Townie post season award winners were: Jacob Bedford - 1st Team All State, 1st Team All Division; Brandon Pietruszka - 2nd Team All State, 1st Team All Division; John Vaughn III - 3rd Team All State, 1st Team All Division, All Tournament; Jacob Perkins - 2nd Team Serving Southern All Division; and Will Schofield - 2nd Team All Division.

Special Olympics Rhode Island

On the weekend of May 31st & June 1st, the Special Olympics team from East Providence competed in the Special Olympics of Rhode Island’s 2013 State Summer Games, held on the campus of URI. Athletes from all over the state gather together for a weekend of competition including Aquatics, Bowling, Bicycling, Power lifting, Soccer, and Track & Field. The competition got off to a great start on Friday, with events in the afternoon and Opening Ceremonies at night. The highlight of the evening was the carrying in of the Special Olympic Torch followed by a parade of over 1,000 motorcycles and a wonderful fireworks display. That is a truly inspiring moment. The athletes, coaches, and chaperones stay overnight for the weekend in dormitories, along with the other teams from across the state. This year the warm weather allowed for an enjoyable weekend of additional outside activities, to go along with all of the competitive events. The athletes listened to the music, danced, and celebrated with the same athletes that they competed so hard against during the day’s competition. They enjoyed meeting friends, the athletic competition, and the award ceremonies. The amount of effort and courage that is on display during the weekend is truly inspirational. Seeing the look on the athlete’s faces, as family and friends cheer them on, is one you will not soon forget. Below are the results of the athletes from the Special Olympics of East Providence team at the 2013 State Summer Games. continued on next page...

The Impossible Became the Possible

The Return of Baseball & Softball to Riverside and Martin Middle Schools

With the 2012-2013 school year and the Spring season of sports coming to an end, we would like to pay tribute to the coaches that volunteered their time and experiences to make it possible for our middle school athletes not only to learn the skills to play, but also to learn the many life lessons associated with playing these sports. To Coach Jim Russo, Coach Shane Messier, Coach Katie Kenahan and Coach Steve Chechrallah and their assistants… Project 106 thanks you! Putting together America’s favorite past time came quick and unexpected. Both organizations along with the middle school principals and the school administration had only a few days to make a decision to go through with the baseball/softball season. Despite all the upward battles and paperwork headaches, the group came to a unanimous decision to give these kids the opportunity to play. The East Providence Middle Schools Athletics Booster Club and Project 106 would like to jointly recognize our middle school student athletes. These athletes did the very best under very different circumstances. Their hard work and determination paid off. Three out of the four teams made it to the playoffs this season. Not only that, many parents have shared with us the positive difference in both behavior and academics that they have seen with their own children and with the school spirit in general over the past few months. Baseball and Softball at both Riverside and Martin Middle Schools were solely financed this year by the combined efforts of Project 106 and the EPMSABC. The costs to finance these sports differs among sport and season. I want to make it clear that we will do our best to provide the most sports we can at this time. However, to repeat this success, we need your help. Middle School sports are not part of the school department budget and at this time

July 2013 there is no indication that we will be having them return anytime soon. So, in repeating myself at this time, East Providence School Department does not have middle school sports. Therefore, we as a community the ones that march on city hall need to come back together and help our children know that we still believe in this cause. The cause to bring back sports to our middle school athletes. Please write to our elected officials to let them know that we need sports back in our middle schools. Also, continue to support these organizations with monetary donations, volunteering or attending one of our fundraising events. Continuing to offer sports in the fall/winter will require the support of the community, whether through direct financial support or volunteering your time. A volunteer is committed to a vision that originates within. and then evolves into action. Look within your hearts to find the energy to finish the fight, believe in the impossible and become a champion. Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time, but they have the heart. Please stay connected with Project 106 via our facebook page or our website www. project106.org. We will be listing our upcoming fundraisers and fall sports news via these two pages. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Visit us our booth at East Providence Heritage Fest July 19-21. Project 106 Jessica Beauchaine

The East Providence AYSO Dragons U8 boys team had a great showing at the North Kingstown Father’s Day Classic Tournament this Saturday and Sunday. In their first game they faced a very physical and strong Burillville/Glocester team. The Dragons took an early lead and were able to hang on to come away with a 7-3 victory. Game two against a very fast and skilled South County team started with the Dragon’s giving up a quick goal one minute into the game. The Dragons regrouped and rebounded to a 3-1 lead finishing the game with an 8-4 victory. Game three was against the very talented Pawtucket Storm. The Pawtucket Storm had edged out a 3-2 win in a tight game against the Dragons during their regular Spring Super Liga match. The Dragons were excited to face Pawtucket in what many saw as a rematch of two talented teams. It was an exciting game to watch as Pawtucket started off strong with a quick goal early on. The Dragons answered back by scoring four unanswered goals and taking a 4-1 lead. In the final minutes of the game Pawtucket scored two goals to bring the Dragon’s lead to within one goal. The Dragons tightened up their defense and were able to hold off Pawtucket’s late rally and win it 4-3. The East Providence AYSO Dragons finished the tournament with a perfect record of 3-0.

Raimondo Promotes Financial Empowerment At Weaver Library

East Providence, R.I. – General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo recently visited Weaver Library to promote financial empowerment as part of a library tour with the Capital Good Fund to educate the public about personal finance. “Far too many Rhode Islanders face challenges that might have been avoided through a greater understanding of personal finance,” Raimondo said. “If people are more financially stable at home, our entire state will benefit. Program participants learned ways to better manage their finances through budgeting, building and maintaining their credit and developing strategies to pay off debt. HERITAGE FESTIVAL

Thirty Three Years of Celebrating East Providence Culture July is the time of year for our annual East Providence Heritage Festival, that wonderful event that celebrates various cultures and traditions of the people who make up our city. Celebrating its 33rd year, this event is looked forward to all year round, partly because it seems to get better each year, by offering cultural representation, great food, outstanding entertainment, comfortable accommodations, local vendors, friendly people, old friends – and usually great weather! The Heritage Festival Committee is a 16 member, mostly volunteer body of dedicated folks, who overlook every detail of this annual event to ensure yet another success. Each year the festivals’ biggest attraction and source of highest revenue come from its local and national entertainment acts, specifically the Saturday night headliners. This year the festival is proud to announce that UNFORGETTABLE FIRE, a tribute to U2 will be performing on Saturday July 20 at 9:30pm. It is clear that the Festival committee sees the Annual E.P. Heritage Festival is a source of pride. They feel this city, this event – defines who we really are. The effort of the committee and the sponsors and the people who attend and support it does not go unnoticed. The EP Heritage Festival is almost entirely self-funded. The event is self-sustaining, with no financial help from the city. The committee raises most of the money from year to year from sponsors. They reinvest any profit back into the organization to keep this festival going the next year. The Heritage Fest Committee also donates to other organizations, charities, and non-profits.

Heritage Festival Purpose

The East Providence Heritage Festival, founded in 1981, was conceived as a tribute to the richness and variety of the community’s ethnic and cultural heritage. To this end, the East Providence Heritage Festival Committee, in conjunction with the East Providence Parks & Recreation Department and numerous volunteers from civic, non-profit and business organizations, have joined efforts and resources for the past 32 years to sponsor an annual festival honoring the values and unique customs of the myriad cultures that comprise and enhance community life. It is the committee’s purpose and intent to create an atmosphere of understanding and pride in our respective aesthetic, intellectual and social origins and to transmit in tangible fashion a sense of that pride, knowledge and appreciation to succeeding generations.

Visit The Many Booths At The Festival Lots of Heritage Festival attention is focused on the four days of entertainment – but there’s a whole world of Festival fun on the baseball field with many food, merchandise, craft and public service booths available to visit. Food booths include such treats as sausage and meatball sandwiches, clamcakes and chowders, doughboys, French Fries, Hawaiian Fries, pizza, ice cream, frozen ice treats, bakery goods, cotton candy, hot dogs, hamburgers, frozen lemonade and lots more. For the craft lovers there are booths featuring many handmade items, perfect for giving now or for the holidays. Some of the region’s best craftspeople bring their wares to the Festival, including handmade jewelry.

Merchandise booths include many types of jewelry items, clothing, including the latest in T-shirt designs, sunglasses, hobby items, novelties and much more. Specialty booths include temporary tattoos, sand art, hair bling and baseball toss. There will also be a number of information booths as well. The number of booths is still growing as press time for this program approached. Just taking a look at the crowd on the baseball fields during the Saturday and Sunday night concerts proves the popularity of the booths. Pierce Stadium is filled with thousands of music fans, while the baseball field is jammed as well with people visiting all the booths.

Rumford Lions Chowder & Clam Cakes at Heritage Days

As you enter the ball field at Heritage Days the first thing you see is the clam cake and chowder trailer of the Rumford Lions. The Lions have been selling these delectable delights since the very first Heritage Days Festival. Their top secret chowder receipt is more closely guarded that that of Coca Cola, the Colonel’s special spices or Asquino’s pasta sauce. Every year people come back for second and third helpings of the creamy white chowder which is loaded with clams, potatoes and many other ingredients. The clam cakes have more clams than you’ll see on a clam boat emptying its load at the dock. The demand for these golden brown heavenly treats will again be very high so don’t wait too long to get to the trailer and order a dozen or two, but, please don’t ask for ketchup. While you are there pick up a cold drink to top off a gourmet meal. Remember that everyone working at this trailer is a volunteer and 100% of all proceeds are put right back into the community through the Rumford Lions charitable efforts. Also if you are interested in helping serve the entire community of East Providence and surrounding areas please stop by and see how you may become a Lion or visit our website at Rumfordlions.org.

Classic Cars On Display Saturday Only

One of the most enjoyable parts of the Heritage Festival is the display of classic cars. The display changes each year, but it is sure to include everything from the Model T’s of the 1920’s to the cars of the forties and fifties, complete with rumble seats and running boards, along the classic T-birds, 55, 56 and 57 Chevy’s, Mercs, maybe a studebaker or two, perhaps even a Rambler or a Hudson. Not only will you get a close-up view of these well cared for vehicles, both inside and out, you’ll be able to talk with the car’s owners, about engine size, customizing, and everything else which makes these classics so popular.

No Coolers Allowed

2555 Pawtucket Avenue East Providence, RI 02914 • 401-434-3885

Those attending the Heritage Festival are reminded that no coolers or containers are allowed on the festival grounds. Anyone bringing coolers will have them confiscated at the gates for pick-up at the ticket window when leaving the premises.

Best Wishes To All Enjoy the Heritage Days Festival

Please Use Litter Barrels

The Heritage Festival Staff includes hard-working clean-up crews to make the event enjoyable for all. Please use the litter barrels conveniently placed throughout the festival grounds to help them in their task. Special recycling containers are also placed on the grounds for cans and bottles.

Six (6) week session Chronic Illness Self-Management Education Class

Sessions will be for those with chronic conditions, and/or their caregivers. To date, the LWRI self-management education programs have proven to significantly help those with chronic conditions. Some of the topics that are covered are how to exercise and eat properly, how to use medications appropriately, how to solve everyday problems, and how to communicate effectively with family members and healthcare providers-all positive life skills to enhance one’s well-being. The outcome for the participants could be a reduction in pain, management of depression, control of fear and frustration, and a boost in self-confidence to manage their condition. Although it would be of benefit to be involved in class discussions, it is important to note that class participants are not obligated to discuss personal issues or to exert themselves in any way. It is entirely up to the participants as to how involved they

Lets try to start up Zumba again ZUMBA

Zumba is a dance fitness cardio class that incorporates salsa, merengue, mambo,

hip-hop, and some other styles of music into the class. Beto Perez forgot his tape of aerobics music for a class he was teaching. He used the tapes he had in his backpack, consisting of salsa & merengue, and improvised a class using this music and rhythm’s. After moving to United States in 2001, he teamed up with his childhood friend, and it starting progressing from there. A little about the potential instructor: I have been into Zumba for approximately 3 years. I slowly started taking classes, and I was addicted. To be able to get a workout in while dancing, and not even realizing that it’s a workout, and seeing results of the weight-loss, it was easy to stay into it. I got certified to teach Zumba after my mentor kept telling me that this was made for me, in 2011. I love doing this, it’s the only thing I do. If interested please notify the Administration Office

Dining Guide

Hello, I’m Angela Hall and welcome to “Play With Your Food”… because cooking should be fun! July is here! Beautiful July brings long summer days, lemonade, backyard cookouts and celebrations. One of my favorite treats of summer are cherries. There are two general varieties of cherries: sweet and sour. The success of your recipe will depend on choosing the right variety. Fresh sweet cherries are available in the U.S. from May through August. Sour cherries begin ripening in June. Dried cherries are now available year-round and can be eaten as snacks or used in recipes like raisins. Usually eaten out of hand, sweet cherries are larger than sour cherries. They are heart-shaped and have sweet firm flesh. They range in color from golden red-blushed Royal Ann to dark red to purplish-black. Bing, Lambert, and Tartarian are other popular dark cherries. Sweet cherries also work well in cooked dishes. Normally too tart to eat raw, sour cherries are smaller than their sweet cousins, and more globular in shape with softer flesh. The Early Richmond variety is the first available in late spring and is bright red in color, with the Montmorency soon following. The dark red Morello variety is another popular sour cherry. Sour cherries are normally cooked with sugar and used for pies, preserves, and relishes. After years in the shadow of other fruit, tart cherries are emerging as a major Super Fruit. A substantial and growing body of scientific research has linked tart cherries to anti-inflammatory benefits, reduced pain from gout and arthritis and an extensive list of heart health benefits. Recent studies even suggest tart cherries can help reduce post-exercise muscle and joint pain Cooking with cherries is easier when using a cherry pitter to prepare them. A cherry pitter is not something most people consider a kitchen gadget necessity but for a cherry lover it’s a “must have”. Yes I have spent too much time carefully extracting the pit from the cherry with a small knife and mini-melon baller, no more since I have mastered the technique of the cherry pitter. Mine has a little glass tubing to place the cherry into so it doesn’t spray cherry juice when the pit is extracted. I have used it with olives as well. I highly recommend this little tool, it’s fun, quick and resulting in beautifully pitted whole cherries that will make your pastries and pies picture perfect. The first recipe I want to share is one I have been making for a while, CherryAlmond Clafouti. Calfouti is a rustic simple French dessert that’s a cross between a pancake and a custard. This can be made ahead of time and served as an after dinner dessert or as brunch side dish, either way a chilled Sparkling Prosecco is a nice complement.

The Reporter July 2013

The next recipe is a simple cherry pie. Some pie connoisseurs prefer sour cherries, I prefer the way sweet ones work in this filling. A refrigerated piecrust simplifies preparation, letting you focus on creating a pretty lattice top –a fitting finish for this lovely dessert. If you have any questions or want to share thoughts on these and other receipts you can contact me at PLAYWITHFOODTODAY@gmail.com or look for me on Facebook.

CHERRY-ALMOND CLAFOUTI

1 ¼ cups Almond Milk (unsweetened) 1 tablespoon plus ½ cup sugar 8 ounces dark sweet cherries, pitted and halved (about 2 cups) 3 large eggs, room temperature ½ teaspoon almond extract pinch of salt ¼ cup all purpose flour powdered sugar Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter a 10-inch-diameter glass pie dish, sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. Scatter cherries evenly over bottom of dish. Using an electric mixer, beat eggs, almond extract, salt, and remaining ½ cup sugar in medium bowl until well blended. Add almond milk and beat to blend. Sift flour into egg mixture and beat until smooth. Pour mixture over cherries. Bake until set and knife inserted into center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cool completely, lightly dust with powdered sugar and serve.

FRESH CHERRY PIE

2 tablespoons uncooked quick-cooking tapioca 6 cups pitted sweet cherries ¾ cup granulated sugar ¼ cup cornstarch 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ¼ teaspoon almond extract 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie dough or your favorite two-crust recipe cooking spray 2 tablespoons water 1 large egg white 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar Place tapioca in a spice or coffee grinder; process until finely ground. Combine tapioca, cherries, and next 5 ingredients (though salt) in a large bowl; toss well. Let cherry mixture stand 30 minutes; stir to combine. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Roll 1 (9-inch) dough portion into an 11-inch circle. Fit dough into a 9-inch pie plate coated with cooking spray, allowing dough to extend over edge of plate. Spoon cherry mixture and any remaining liquid into dough. Roll remaining (9-inch) dough portion into a 12-inch circle. Cut dough into 12 (1-inch wide) strips; arrange in a lattice pattern over cherry mixture. Fold edges under; crimp. Combine 2 tablespoons water and egg white in a small bowl. Brush the egg white mixture over dough on top of pie and sprinkle evenly with turbinado sugar. Bake for 20 minutes. Shield edges of piecrust with foil, and bake an additional 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is thick and bubbly. Cook pie in pan for 45 minutes on a wire rack.
