East Providence News Briefs City’s Administration Calls on Council to Release Findings of Investigation

East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva is asking the City Council to release to the public the full report and findings of an investigation by the City’s Assistant Solicitor. The request comes after allegations by the City Clerk against the Director of Administration and Equal Employment Opportunity/ Affirmative Action Officer were made during the August 17, 2021 City Council meeting. “The Director of Administration was not afforded the opportunity to respond to those allegations during the meeting,” states the administration press release. Since that time, the City Council instructed the Assistant City Solicitor Dylan Conley to conduct an investigation of the allegations levied by the City Clerk. “The Administration categorically denies the allegations made by the City Clerk and takes great pride in being responsive and providing a safe, supportive, equal opportunity work environment,” Mayor Bob DaSilva wrote in his September 14, 2021 letter to the Council requesting the report of the findings to be released. It is the City’s understanding that Assistant Solicitor Conley presented his findings in a written report in executive session on September 7, 2021, as noted on the City Council docket. The council voted to make the report part of the public record for anyone to request. Councilors Ricardo Mourato and Anna Sousa voted against releasing the report while members Robert Britto, Bob Rodericks and Nate Cahoon voted to do so. “Why would we (the council) request an investigative report and then not release its final results,” asked Rodericks. Sousa and Mourato wanted to wait for additional investigations before releasing the just completed Deputy Solicitor’s report. “To date, the City has not been made aware of any formal investigations by any agency,” replied solicitor Dylan Conley.

Former Union Primary School Finally Sold

In a resolution sponsored by Council President Robert Britto and Vice-President Bob Rodericks, the long vacant Union Primary school building on Pawtucket Avenue in Rumford has been sold. Since closing as a primary school there have been several proposals for its use but none had staying power and the building was showing severe signs of deterioration. At one point the City agreed to house the school district

administration there and went as far as appropriating funds for a new heating system and roof. That, too, never materialized. The building is on the register of historic properties and its appearance will remain essentially the same. It was purchased for $300,000 by Touchdown Realty Group from East Greenwich and will be designed by David Sisson Architecture of East Providence. City Community Development Director David Bacharach handled the bidding and negotiations. “The building will house 6 to 8 apartments with high ceilings, spacious units and plenty of land to work with,” said Bachrach. “It will be a big improvement all around.”

City Shines Light on Savings with RISE Engineering Streetlight Conversion

The City of East Providence will be converting its 5,200 streetlights to LED lights, resulting in annual savings to taxpayers, according to the Mayor’s office and a City Council action. Under the Municipal Streetlight Investment Act, municipalities are allowed to purchase and maintain streetlights. The City worked with National Grid and its consultant RPM, LLC to develop requests for proposals from qualified contractors for the streetlight conversion. “After reviewing proposals, the city selected Cranston-based RISE Engineering to replace existing streetlights with new, energy-efficient LED lights, which are less expensive to operate. “The future shines bright for the city of East Providence,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “Reaching this agreement has been a priority of my administration since taking office – it not only provides savings to our residents, it enables us to reverse the redcapping of streetlights throughout the City and turn on the inactive lights.” The conversion to LED streetlights provides many benefits including: • Increased public safety • Lower energy costs • Lower maintenance costs (LEDs last three to four times long that incumbent technology) • Better illumination of roads • Increased visibility • Decrease in overall light pollution The program projects that, once complete, it will provide the city’s taxpayers approximately $501,612 in annual savings. In addition, East Providence’s LED project will receive generous National Grid and

Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources incentives. In addition to the new streetlights, the City will also install smart streetlight controls, which will enable remote management, scheduling and dimming of the new lights, which will ultimately lead to additional energy savings. The City has also reached an agreement on the purchase of street lights from National Grid (The Narragansett Electric Company) in the amount of $285,956.77. The agreement comes after the Rhode Island Dept. of Transportation reached an agreement to, once the conversion of the streetlights is complete, take over payment and maintenance of the streetlights on state roads in East Providence. The agreement between the City of East Providence and National Grid include the following: • Late charges in the amount of $62,205 will be waived • A total of $458,479 in outstanding arrearage that the city was holding back to be paid to • TNEC (held in escrow). The City held the funds in escrow because it amounted to the portion of the electric bill for streetlights on state roads in East Providence. News Briefs continued on next page....

Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards 26 U.S. Cities Grants

In a September 29, 2021, press release Bloomberg Philanthropies in New York announced that 26 U.S. cities, including East Providence, RI, will be awarded Asphalt Art Initiative grants, providing each up to $25,000. The grants are for cities to install projects in 2022-23 that use art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents of their communities. “This program is inspired by work done to improve pedestrian safety and revitalize New York City streets,” said Rebecca Carriero of Bloomberg Philanthropies. “Asphalt art projects help cities reclaim public spaces, make them brighter and safer, and build community – all important goals, especially amid the continuing hardships of the pandemic,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies. “Cities that tap into the power of public art bring new life and energy to city streets, inspiring residents and fostering a shared spirit of neighborhood pride. There can be real civic strength in public art, and this program helps cities capitalize on it.” Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative responds to the growing number of cities around the world embracing art as an effective and relatively low-cost strategy to enliven and improve safety in their streets through interventions on plazas, sidewalks, crosswalks, intersections, and other transportation infrastructure. East Providence, RI will be in the category of Intersection and crosswalk murals. Other awards are Billings, MT; Chicago, IL; Huntington, WV; Kodiak, AK; New Brunswick, NJ; Niagara Falls, NY; Starkville, MS and Tallahassee, FL.

More City News East Providence Fire Dept. Earns National Recognition for Efforts to Improve STEMI Treatment

The East Providence Fire Dept. has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Plus Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures to treat patients who suffer severe heart attacks. Every year, more than 250,000 people experience a ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the deadliest type of heart attack caused by blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication. The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks – starting from when 9-1-1 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. Optimal care for heart attack patients takes coordination between the individual hospital, EMS and healthcare system. “EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” said Tim Henry, M.D., chair of the Mission: Lifeline Acute Coronary Syndrome Subcommittee. “Since they often are the first medical point of contact, they can save precious minutes of treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals to an incoming heart attack patient.”

Program participants apply for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care for STEMI patients. “East Providence Fire Department is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to providing optimal care for heart attack patients,” Director of Emergency Medical Services Capt. John Potvin said. “The Mission: Lifeline program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis so patients have the best possible chance of survival.”

East Providence Historical Society Receives $100K Gift from a Local Artist

Hunt’s Mills Heritage Park will receive new signage to attract visitors to the John Hunt House Museum thanks to a gift from a local artist, the late Leonard Iannacone. Iannacone, a long-time East Providence resident who passed away in January 2020 after a long illness, often visited Hunt’s Mills. A prolific artist, Iannacone created drawings of many historical sites in East Providence and throughout the state including the John Hunt House Museum and other areas of the 44-acre Hunt’s Mills Heritage Park. In fact, many of Iannacone’s creations are on display at the John Hunt House Museum. The East Providence Historical Society, which oversees the Hunt House, received $100,000 from the estate of Iannacone, a U.S. Army veteran and career interior designer. “The gift will greatly help sustain their growth as a vital piece of East Providence’s history,” said Dave O’Connell, executor of the Iannacone estate who facilitated the gift. O’Connell said his dear friend wished to leave a gift for the National Parks Service and that the site of the John Hunt House Museum forms the southernmost point of interest of the park and is located on the South end of the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor – part of the National Parks Service.

October 2021 The Reporter O’Connell said his friend kept to himself, but had a very generous and soft heart for those in need. “The generosity exhibited by the late Len Iannacone shows how important our parks and history are to our residents,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “The City is very thankful to the Iannacone estate and the Historical Society for keeping his memory alive.” O’Connell told the East Providence Historical Society CoPresidents Cheryl Faria and Jeff Faria, that the gift was unrestricted. The funds were used to create an endowment in Len’s name through the Rhode Island Foundation – the Len Iannacone Legacy Fund, according to Cheryl Faria. Faria said the plan is to use some of the funds to purchase a new sign at the park’s entrance to better attract visitors to the history that Hunt’s Mills has to offer. “We are very thankful for Len’s gift, it will be the gift that keeps on giving,” Faria said.

The Dining Guide Pop Up a Celebratory Snack

Celebrated for its seed-to-snack simplicity, popcorn is also non-GMO, vegan, glutenfree, sugar-free and naturally low in fat and calories, which makes it an easy fit for dietary preferences – and it’s budget-friendly. Add in popcorn’s irresistible smell, taste and versatility, and it’s easy to understand its popularity. With so many different ways to eat it – plain, buttery or loaded with goodies like these Toffee Almond Chocolate Popcorn or Churro Popcorn versions – popcorn fits many moods and occasions. Semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit® Scholarship Program

Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Mindful Living Everyday Virtual Series Weds, October 13-27 at 7:00pm via Zoom

The Weaver Library is proud to present a virtual 3-week series focused on the practical application of mindfulness techniques. Much has been written about mindfulness and its benefits but often there is a lack of clarity about how it can make a difference in your daily personal and professional life. In this series, we will explore mindfulness by practicing specific techniques that can be immediately incorporated into your daily life. We will discuss practices to address stress and to live more fully in the present moment. Participants with no prior mindfulness experience are welcome, as are those practitioners who enjoy the practice in a community setting. These introductory sessions will be nonsequential, so participants may attend one or multiple sessions. The techniques will be presented in a manner that a new participant can follow easily but will allow those who have taken the earlier sessions to practice at a more advanced level. At the end of each session, the instructor will remain online to discuss any questions or to provide more in-depth explanations. Ms. McLaughlin has been a member of the R.I. Bar for over 30 years, and a professor of law. She is a certified yoga teacher and mindfulness instructor who teaches a variety of offerings of in-person classes and online courses in workplace sessions and community settings. She is also a facilitator for Meditate Together, hosted by Mindful Leader, a worldwide program that offers free live group meditation sessions, 24 hours a day, five days a week in an effort to help as many people as possible during these challenging times. Her website is amindfulnessjourney.com. Please register at www.eastprovidencelibrary.org on our calendar of events or email mbonds@eastprovidencelibrary.org. Those who register will receive the Zoom link as we approach the start of the series.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT Inexpensive Home Maintenance Projects To Do This Weekend

(BPT) - Home maintenance. The very words might evoke thoughts of an entire weekend spent laboring at home instead of relaxing in it, but that doesn't always have to be the case. "Not every home maintenance project has to be a large undertaking or one that takes up all of your free time," said Christopher O'Rourke, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. "There are small weekend projects that can save you time, worry and money in the long run." Here are six home maintenance projects you can do this weekend that will save you the headache of costly repairs later on.

Clean Refrigerator Coils

To keep your refrigerator properly working, it's best to clean the coolant coils every six months. Coolant coils, which can be located on the back or bottom of the refrigerator, keep warm air out. When the coils are covered with dust, dirt or hair they aren't able to release heat efficiently. In turn, the coils work harder and longer, using more energy and shortening the life of the appliance. This might end up costing you more in the form of a higher energy bill or purchase of a new refrigerator. Clean your refrigerator coils with a vacuum and coil cleaning brush. Coil cleaning brushes can be found at appliance stores or online for $10 or less.

Check Caulking

Matt Blais, Owner

508-252-4554

NO OU W E R XP SE AN RV D IC ING ES !

Caulking is customary around wet areas like bathtubs and sinks to keep water from seeping into the wall, but it is also used around windows and doors to prevent air from escaping. Check for significant air temperature differences near windows and walls and use a digital thermometer to verify air leaks. Make sure to also check areas where vents and plumbing fixtures meet the outside wall. Old caulking can dry out and crack, making it vulnerable to air and water leaks. If you notice dry or cracked caulking, remove as much of it as possible and reseal. Caulking gun sets that include the sealant, scraping and smoothing tool can begin at $35 and be found online or at your local hardware store. continued on next page...

Examine the Roof

The first step of roof inspection is to check the inside of your home. Look for damp spots or water stains on the ceiling or for cracked plaster along the wall. These can be signs of water damage. At ground level do a visual examination of your roof's exterior for any cracked or missing shingles. Notice if you have to trim back tree branches that may make contact as they can damage your roof's exterior. If you suspect any type of damage, contact an experienced roofer who can perform a thorough inspection.

Gutters are necessary to direct water away from your home's foundation. Their exposure to the elements means that they need to be cleaned and inspected regularly. Clean Chimney

Chimneys should be cleaned once a year, especially before the first fire of the season. Check the inside of the chimney to make sure it is clear of any debris or small animals nesting as these types of blockages could cause a fire. Thoroughly clear away ash or soot around the chimney before the cold weather starts.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are both a money and energy saver. They allow you to set a comfortable temperature when you're home and can be scheduled to lower the temperature while you're away, helping you save money by cutting down energy usage. "Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to set the heating and cooling of their home to their schedule," said O'Rourke. "It's one less thing for homeowners to worry about and they are fairly easy to install." Your home is not only your sanctuary, it's your commitment. Assessing your homeowners' coverage and understanding your policy is a simple household task you can accomplish this weekend and one that can save you money.

Pomham Rocks Lighthouse’s Antique Beacon Welcomed Home

Built on an island in Narragansett Bay in 1871, Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is celebrating its 150th birthday in a special way. Its antique classic fourth order Fresnel lens, the iconic lighthouse beacon, removed from the tower in 1974, was returned the first week of September. It will be the focal point of the lighthouse’s museum exhibit. It is one of only about 250 fourth order lenses in existence in the United States. Only two others can be seen in museums in RI. The return home was a bittersweet journey for Dennis Tardiff. As a young U.S. Coast Guardsman, Tardiff received his first assignment at Pomham Rocks Lighthouse in 1971, the year that it turned 100. There was no hoopla or celebration, just two weeks on and one week off, with a three-man crew performing official keeper duties, including maintaining the fourth order Fresnel lens in the tower. He left the year the lens left, in 1974, when the Coast Guard decommissioned the light station. As Officer-in-Charge, Tardiff handed over the keys to The Lighthouse to the civilian family which next occupied it. Now, 50 years later, as The Lighthouse turns 150, Tardiff is Chair of the Board of Directors of Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, the volunteer group that has restored and maintains the lighthouse. He was instrumental in facilitating discussions with the U.S. Coast Guard, which owns the lens, and Custom House Maritime Museum, where it was displayed for 46 years. Those discussions ultimately resulted in its return home. One of only a handful of Coast Guard certified lampists in the country, Kurt Fosburg brought a wealth of knowledge and experience and a Jeep full of tools to Riverside in early September. The Michigan owner of Superior Lighthouse Restoration, he has restored more than 100 Fresnel lenses across the country. He was entrusted to move, repair, clean and polish the antique optical equipment. Every job is unique, he noted, and has it challenges. Lifting the 225-pound glass lens off a four-foot-high platform in the Newburyport museum and carting it down the granite steps of the 1835 Custom House took a well-designed plan, teamwork and a lot of muscle. The lens was placed on the base of a wooden crate that Fosburg created for the historic transfer. Once cushioned in protective wrap and quilts, the moving crate was assembled around the beehive-shaped lantern and was carried, Egyptian-style, on two wooden poles. Assisting in this effort were two Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mates from nearby Coast Guard Station Merrimack River. Board members of Custom House Maritime Museum and Pomham Rocks Lighthouse were on hand to witness the transfer.

Holding the 225-pound antique glass lens by its brass frame, the moving team lifts it off a high platform onto a table in the first step of the move in Newburyport.

Upon arrival in Riverside, RI, the same technique was used to transport the lens to the volunteer group’s boat, and after arriving on the island, to bring it into the lighthouse. Fosburg installed the Fresnel lens on a pedestal in Pomham’s lighthouse museum. A replica brass oil lamp, which he made, was placed inside. The lamp originally produced the light inside the lens. Creating replicas of lamps and pedestals is another one of Fosburg’s areas of expertise. In 2019, he built the rotating lens pedestal and lamp for the Academy Award nominated motion picture, “The Lighthouse,” starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. The 175-pound steel and brass pedestal that the Fresnel lens is now displayed on, was brought down from Pomham’s tower using a block and tackle technique. It is the same pedestal that held this lens from the time it first arrived at Pomham Rocks around 1926 until it was removed in 1974. To replace it, Fosburg created a replica of a pedestal, similar to one that would have held Pomham’s first lens, a smaller sixth order Fresnel lens, when it was first lit on December 1, 1871. The replica pedestal now holds the LED light installed and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as an active aid to navigation. “This is a beautiful fourth order Fresnel lens,” Fosburg stated. “My job is to restore it and stabilize it,” he said, as he masterfully removed decades-old paint drips and applied a crystal-clear solution to resolidify the letharge, the putty-like substance holding the 54 pieces of glass in the brass frame. Everybody loves lighthouses, he noted. But lighthouses are really all about lenses, he explained. The house was there only for the keeper and his family. And the keeper was there only to tend to the light. It was the multiple glass prisms of the lens that bent all the light to produce one strong beam that provided safety for those at sea. And it was Augustin-Jean Fresnel who created this revolutionary specialized lens. Working hand in hand with the lampist was Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse Vice Chair Alex Dias. It was Dias who led the search for a lampist. Classic Fresnel lenses are rare, fragile and require expert care. They can only be moved and restored by a U.S. Coast Guard-certified lampist. In 1871 when Pomham Rocks Lighthouse was built, there were hundreds of active lighthouses lit by Fresnel lenses in the country, and the United States Lighthouse Service employed lampists to care for them. A century and a half later, the number of both has declined sharply. Dias researched and provided essential information for the fabrication of replica pieces and construction of the display platform. As one of the final steps

Lampist Kurt Fosburg cleans decades-old paint drips off the surface of the lens.

Alex Dias shows a replica of the brass oil lamp that produced the light inside the Fresnel lens.

October 2021 The Reporter for display, he carefully positioned the red glass chimney, which produced Pomham’s distinctive glow, on the replica oil lamp and placed it inside the restored lens. In constant communication with the lampist in preparation for the move, he also volunteered as his assistant on the job. As Chair of the Museum Committee, Dias considers Pomham’s Fresnel lens as the showpiece of the museum’s collection and a valuable tool for educating visitors. Jeremy D’Entremont, president of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), and his wife, Charlotte, drove down from Maine to witness and chronicle the final stages of lens restoration. In 2010, ExxonMobil donated Pomham Rocks Lighthouse and the island it occupies to the Foundation, the national organization dedicated to preserving lighthouses. Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse is a chapter of ALF. Historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society, D’Entremont is author or co-author of more than 20 books. First-time visitors to the newly restored lighthouse, the D’Entremonts admired the attention to historic detail throughout the building. At the completion of the project, with Pomham’s Fresnel lens bolted to its highly polished original pedestal, volunteers who had helped facilitate the move and Kurt Fosburg, the lampist who had meticulously planned and implemented the process, made a circle around the newly restored lens.

Dave Kelleher, one of founders of Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse, led the group in a champagne toast, honoring all, who since 2004 have helped make this moment possible, giving thanks for the return of Pomham’s lens – the soul of the lighthouse – and pledging to preserve and care for it forever. Public tours of the lighthouse are planned for 2022.

Harmony Heritage Resumes In-Person Rehearsals

Harmony Heritage women’s a cappella chorus has resumed in-person rehearsals 7:00 PM – 9:00 pm on Tuesdays at a new location at Murray Unitarian Universalist Church in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Harmony Heritage chorus is an award-winning chapter of Harmony, Inc. and performs under the direction of Bob O’Connell, an accomplished director, performer, arranger and musician. Harmony Heritage primarily sings in the barbershop harmony style, which traces its musical roots back to the turn of the 20th century. Today, barbershop harmony singers not only celebrate the classics, but also put their own spin on contemporary songs as well. If you would like more information about our chorus, please email Barbara-Ann MacIntosh or call her at 401-560-0073 or, if you would like to join us online and see what it’s all about, contact Camilla Streeter for the Zoom link. For the safety of everyone, we follow state and CDC current recommended guidelines. Singing indoors is well-documented to be a “super-spreader” event, so at this time we are only welcoming vaccinated visitors. Our rehearsal space is large enough to allow for comfortable social distancing by each participant. For the foreseeable future, to enhance our mutual safety, we are wearing singer’s masks while in the church building.

Looking forward to our October Spirit Days of Dress like a Hero, Unity Day and Black and Orange Day. The Hennessey Elementary School has a Free Little Library that is up and running at Hennessey. (East Providence) September 18, 2021- Sacred Heart School is in the process of launching a new development program to support the ever-changing needs of Catholic schools. Sacred Heart School is entering its 104th year as a school, and it is one of the oldest Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Providence. More than 40 alumni, donors, friends, and staff gathered at Riviera Restaurant on Friday, September 17th, for a cocktail reception and presentation. Presenters included the school’s principal, Mrs. Emily DaSilva, longstanding faculty member, Sharon Chalmers, a De LaSalle brother and alumnus of Sacred Heart, Br. Vincent Pelletier, a parent speaker, Mrs. Cathy Martins, and a non-alumnus donor, Mr. Frank Sullivan. “The annual appeal reception is just one of the many events that will help Sacred Heart reach its goal of $40,000,” said Emily DaSilva, Principal. “Sacred Heart School is truly a family, and the presence of so many people at the reception is living proof that we truly are a family; I have no doubt that we will reach our goal!” Those who are interested in supporting Sacred Heart School can mail a check to 56 Purchase Street, East Providence, RI 02914, or donate online at https://www.sacredheartepri.com/make-adonation.html.

From the State House Representative Gregg Amore Announces Campaign to Become Rhode Island’s Next Secretary of State

East Providence, RI - State Representative Gregg Amore (Democrat - District 65, East Providence) today launched his candidacy to become Rhode Island’s next Secretary of State. Amore’s announcement came at a press conference in front of the newly constructed East Providence High School, where he taught Government, History and Civic Education for twenty-six years. “I have spent the vast majority of my adult life here at East Providence High School, first as a Government, History and Civics teacher and coach, and more recently as the city’s Athletic Director,” stated Amore. “My passion for teaching is deeply connected to the subject I taught. To educate students about our collective history and show them how to engage in the government process has been a labor of love. In my role as State Representative, I am particularly proud of the successful school construction bond legislation – which culminated in the overwhelming passage of a statewide bond referendum and many accompanying local bond questions, including the one to build the new East Providence High School. This is a shining example of civic engagement leading to good policy and tremendous public support.” Amore continued, “My passion for and experience in civic engagement and government, my heartfelt belief in public service, instilled in me by my parents, and a deep reverence for the protection of the most fundamental right in our democracy – the right to vote – has brought me here today, among my family, friends, students and colleagues, to officially announce my candidacy to be Rhode Island’s next Secretary of State. I believe my background and life experiences have uniquely prepared me for this job, at a time when voting rights across the country have come under attack. As a Government, History and Civics teacher, I understand the importance of ensuring an open, accessible, safe and secure electoral process – and as your Secretary of State, this will be my top priority. In 2020, we saw a record number of votes cast in a safe, secure manner. This is how it should be – and I will work to expand on this progress. I will also heavily promote Civic Education for educators and the general public, so everyone can truly understand how state government works. I will fight to keep our government open, and ensure government officials and lobbyists are transparent, honest, and accountable. And I will ensure a smooth process for those with a vision and a dream to start and maintain a business in Rhode Island. I plan to use this office to make life better for all Rhode Islanders.” Rhode Island Speaker of the House Joe Shekarchi stated, “Gregg has a deep understanding of history and state government, he’s a great communicator, and he’s not afraid to make tough decisions. During a time in our history when voting rights are coming under attack across our country, Gregg is exactly who we need to stand strong and ensure all Rhode Islanders have a fair shot to vote.” “As a fellow high school teacher, I have seen Gregg in action in the classroom, and he has a natural way of not just teaching concepts, but inspiring students as well,” stated State Senator Valarie Lawson (Democrat - District 14, East Providence.) “We currently live in a time where the entire electoral process has come under attack. I’m supporting Gregg because he knows this process inside and out – and will make it a top priority to ensure safe, secure elections and expanded access to the voting booth.” State Representative Katherine Kazarian (Democrat, District 63, East Providence) stated, “As the lead sponsor of the Let RI Vote Act, I sought out Gregg to co-sponsor this bill with me because

of his deep knowledge of civics and his ability to navigate state government. Not only is Gregg extremely qualified to ensure our electoral process is safe, secure, and available to everyone who wants to participate, but he’s also committed to helping ensure business owners can easily start and maintain a business in Rhode Island. He understands that small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and help drive the middle class, and will do everything he can to further their mission. Gregg has dedicated his life to public service, and I have no doubt he is the right person for this job at this moment in time.” Representative Karen Alzate (Democrat, District 60, Pawtucket) said, “Gregg is a sponsor of the Let RI Vote Act, which will make permanent the expanded access to voting that we saw during the pandemic. I represent a District that benefited greatly from this expanded access, and I’m supporting him because I know he’ll make it a top priority to push forward this proposal to expand voting, and make certain that it’s done in a way that keeps our elections safe.” East Providence High School teacher Richard Martin, who taught with Gregg for more than two decades, said, “I taught with Gregg for a long time, and witnessed his ability to connect with students and get through to them in a way that only he could do. He has an incredible ability to communicate, a passion for teaching, and a yearning to keep learning and growing, whether in his role as teacher, coach, or athletic director. This skill set translates across all situations and professions – and I know he’ll put it to good use as our next Secretary of State.” Amore concluded, “The 2020 election shined a bright spotlight on Secretaries of State across the nation, and a handful of them in battleground states stood firm in the face of intense political pressure, hyper partisan attacks, and in far too many cases, threats of violence. This job requires a steady hand and the ability to set party politics aside and withstand partisan pressure. It requires the ability to communicate clearly with the public on how our elections are conducted and certified. These men and women proved themselves to be true public servants who placed their country above their party and simply did the job they were elected to do. I believe that in my years in the classroom, as a community volunteer, as an administrator, and in my time in the General Assembly, I have proven myself similarly to be a steady hand – a thoughtful and measured voice, a clear communicator, and a duty-bound public servant – and that’s why I’m running to be your next Secretary of State.” Amore’s campaign announcement video can be viewed on his website at www.GreggForRI.com. It can also be viewed at the YouTube link here:

IN MEMORIAM Edward James “EZ Ed” Lang Edward James “EZ Ed” Lang, 81, passed away on September 9, 2021 in Rumford, RI where he gently took his last breath surrounded by family, after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was the adoring husband of Irene, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Born in Elmhurst, NY, the eternal “Queens kid” was a first generation Irish American, the son of Catherine and Michael Lang of Donegal and Sligo respectively. He was the brother of Michael “Mikey” Lang, who preceded him in death, and Kathleen “Kay” Joyce, who Edward James “EZ Ed” Lang survives him. Eddie grew up in New York listening to his relatives play Celtic jigs and reels every Sunday. He loved stick ball as a kid, entered the seminary as a teen, lived for original 50’s Rock and Roll, and spent 9 years in the United States Navy, which gave him the opportunity to see the world. It was from those same ships that he would write his bride-to-be love letters, or disembark for rides in his white ’59 DeSoto convertible in Newport, where he would later settle with his family for many years. Eddie believed anything could be accomplished if a person was in good health and had an education. He was a proud alma mater of Officer Candidate School; St. John’s University; and the University

of Hartford, where he earned his Masters. His studies helped him help countless others through a rewarding career in Health Care Administration, with a focus on home health care. Edward is survived by his wife, Irene Lang, of Rumford RI, their four sons Chris, Matthew, Kevin, and Daniel, their spouses/significant others Wendy, Sara, and Chloe, and grandchildren Zachary, Delaney, Noah, Finley, Lumen, Vivien, and Maze. Ed loved latin and frequently said “Carpe diem.” He was a devout follower of Christ and truly lived by the words, “Feed a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” He brought these lessons to his family, along with his life of prayer, his love of fishing, and his happiness at a good meal (especially one followed by dessert!). His interactions with loved ones and strangers alike sparkled with humor, sincerity, and laughter. Fishing on the Causeway in Newport, he shared his catch with whoever was near. Passing through a village in Guatemala one day, he bought ice cream for every single child. He befriended others easily, and brought his glow to every interaction, no matter how seemingly big or small. Ed was devoted to St. Therese, the ‘Little Flower,’ who marks her miracles on earth with the sign of a rose. He will be deeply missed, and his love and laughter will always be with us. His family asks that you remember him in prayer and celebrate his life by sharing in the joy of life with all who cross your path. A celebration of life funeral mass will be held Monday 9/27/21 at 10am at St. Margaret’s, 1098 Pawtucket Ave, Rumford, RI 02916, with a reception to follow. Further information is available from J.H.
