East Providence Recognizes the EPHS Senior Class
East Providence School Committee members Jessica Beauchaine and Joel Monteiro spearheaded an effort to honor the class of 2020. Recognizing that this has been a difficult year for the district’s senior class, Mrs. Beauchaine (pictured on the cover) and Mr. Monteiro approached school and district leadership with an idea to place signs on the lawns of the 300 plus members of the senior class. Delia Nelson, graphics arts teacher at the Career and Technology Center, designed the signs. Over thirty teachers, administrators and school committee members volunteered to distribute the signs throughout the city. Early Wednesday morning staff picked up the signs and spread out across the city to blanket the lawns of the class of 2020 with signs to show their support for the class. Senior class members and their families woke up to the bright red signs that stated, “We Love our 2020 Townie Seniors” #Towniestrong. The East Providence school community holds the senior class in our hearts.

East Providence News Briefs Covid-19 Pandemic Continues to Dominate News Governor Closes All RI Schools for the Year Distance Learning to Continue through June
As distance learning continues throughout Rhode Island, Governor Raimondo extinguished any hope of students and teachers returning to their physical classrooms this school year. A grim Raimondo tightened her previously ordered restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Raimondo ordered all public schools to remain physically closed and to continue Distance Learning through June. Residents were continually asked to “stay at home,” in place until further notice. All residents are being asked to “Go to work if you can’t work at home, but come right home and stay there,” said the Governor. All social gatherings of more than 5 people are banned until further notice. EP playgrounds and parks are all closed to the public. “I won’t sugarcoat this. There is nothing easy about this,” Raimondo said. “As I said at the beginning of this, some learning is better than no learning.” While there has been slight improvement in the trend of coronavirus cases, health experts still feel that Rhode Island isn’t out of the woods yet, by any means.

Silent Motorcade Tribute for Nursing Home Staff & Patients
The City of East Providence led by Mayor Bob DaSilva, held a silent motorcade on Saturday, April 19th to show moral support for nursing home residents and staff in the City. "Our administration together with our police rescue and fire departments had a solemn procession and drove by each of our 9 nursing home facilities beginning with Orchard View Manor to show our respect for those who have passed from this horrible disease and their families and to show support for our nursing home residents and our healthcare workers who continue to sacrifice on the front line each day,” said DaSilva in planning for the motorcade event.
School Department Facing Layoffs
Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Crowley told the School Committee that they expected and are prepared to finish this school year with students and teachers conducting “distance learning.” Crowley told the committee during a zoom internet meeting that “… our teachers have done an outstanding job. In some cases we had to say, take a deep breath and relax. We all realize that distance learning will not take the place of the teacher in the classroom. It can’t,” continued the Superintendent. “But all of our teachers have been creative with lessons. The communication by principals with staff is extraordinary. They meet in the morning and then at the end of the day by computer. There continues to be professional development with teachers. Be assured we are in touch with our directors and staff just about every day via virtual meetings. It is going well, and report cards will be out soon as we begin the fourth quarter,” said Crowley.
Layoffs are a Concern Due to Finances
The committee was forewarned that due to the pandemic and its effect on federal, state and local finances, staff layoffs loom in the near future. The department has already seen some revenue cuts. “Here is my concern now,” said Crowley. The state of the economy in Rhode Island. There are many rumors about budget and state aid being cut across the board. East Providence has already received a cut in state aid of some $650,000. If we were to take another hit it would be quite devasting,” she said. The school department is waiting to hear from the state legislature and Governor regarding funding repercussions due to the pandemic. While not ready to address specifics right now, the Superintendent did shed some light on what areas may be cut from the budget. “We’ve been told by legislators to prepare for the worst-case scenario (regarding funding). We could not sustain our pre-kindergarten program as it exists right now. Lots of rumors are swirling around the state these days,” Crowley added. Contractually, the school administration must notify the teacher’s union of any specific staff layoffs by June 1st. “By next month’s meeting I have to come to you with a layoff list,” Crowley told the School Committee in April. “In the last four years all layoffs have been recalled. This year I can’t make any promises. There will be a substantial number of layoffs across the state. It’s the law (layoff notification) and related to the uncertainty of finances,” said Crowley. “If categorical and pre-kindergarten money goes, that will hurt us greatly, I hope that doesn’t happen. There are some positions that are great to have but their cuts would come first before teachers in a classroom,” said Crowley. There is a movement among school departments statewide to push back the June 1st notification deadline to August 1st. Currently the deadline to notify teachers of a layoff is June 1st. That deadline had been changed from a long time deadline of March 1st, several years ago. “The Governor could issue an executive decree to push the layoff date to August 1st.
We don’t know yet. The last thing I want to do is lay off teachers, especially when they have worked so hard on distance learning,” said Crowley.
Bus Company “Squeezing” District
Superintendent Crowley told the committee that teachers and other bargaining units with employment contracts have all agreed to move contract negotiations to at least the end of the summer or later. Presumably, existing contracts would stay in force. “We asked teachers and others to wait until late summer to begin contract negotiations and they all agreed. We just don’t know what our finances will be. We should have a better grasp on finances in the fall. One union is not in agreement. “Our bus company, Ocean State Transit, is squeezing us. We’ve asked them to allow the current contract to roll over. They are not willing to do so,” said Crowley. The current transportation contract was given an extension last June 25th. The School Committee voted to approve the extension according to Crowley and district financial director Craig Enos. “Ocean State said they don’t have to honor it because they don’t have anything in writing. We checked the meeting minutes of June 25, 2019 and the contract extension was approved by the committee,” said Crowley. Pressed by committee member Jessica Beauchaine for further explanation, Crowley reminded the committee that “this all occurred when I was out of work on medical leave.” Crowley said an email from the school administration to Ocean State Transportation informed them that the school committee voted to approve a contract extension, which the bus company had requested. Joel Monteiro indicated that the district should be saving some money with buses currently not running. “Our overall bussing costs should be less and we’re also not paying for monitors?” asked Monteiro. “Yes,” said Crowley. “We are just paying for bus runs to deliver food.” Beauchaine was told that the bus company does not see an email as a legal contract. Ocean State Transit responded to The Reporter that although sold, they still maintained the same company name. They did not respond further when asked to comment on the contract question. Superintendent Crowley reported that the district is receiving about $1.2M in pandemic emergency federal funding. “We are awaiting direction on how those dollars can be appropriated. We know it is not for repeating operating costs as it’s for one time purchases only. We hope to apply it to pandemic related expenses not covered in our budget. Things like paying for food runs, etc.,” Crowley stated.
Executive Order Mandates Face Masks, Cloth Coverings When in Public
East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva has issued an executive order that will mandate anyone over the age of 2 who are able to tolerate a face covering, to wear a mask or cloth covering over their mouth and nose at all times when in public. If an individual is in violation of the order, the business or nonprofit organization has the right to refuse entry or service to the individual on the grounds of protecting the health and safety of all individuals within the business or non-profit organization, states the order. “East Providence has an elderly population and we need to not only protect that population, but we need to -- together as a community -- use all resources available to us to protect the entire population from contracting COVID-19,” Mayor DaSilva said. “While 90 percent of the population who are out in public in our city are wearing some sort of covering, there is still a percentage of people who are not wearing a covering.” “We implore you do follow the order so that we may stop the spread,” DaSilva added. In addition, the order also orders business and non-profits within the City of East Providence to post clear signage at all of its entrances regarding the requirement of the wearing of masks or cloth face coverings while in the store or agency.

The city of East Providence has awarded $45,500 or just under one-third of the City’s total allocation of $150,000 to 11 local, small businesses. East Providence businesses are dealing with unprecedented economic disruption due to this health crisis. Some have had to close temporarily while others have had to cut back on workers. “This is a difficult time for everyone, especially our small businesses—these loan programs provide the much needed financial relief to our local salons, landscaping businesses and gymnastic studios, to name a few,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “And the great news is, we have additional funds allocated to help additional small businesses. These small business relief loans were designed by the city’s Planning and Economic Development office to get these businesses through a period of financial hardship. The Community Development: Job Retention Loan Program, includes no payments for six months and no interests for the life of the loan and the Urban Development Action: COVID-19 Small Business Assistance Program offers no interest, no payments for six months. The two programs, which are supported with existing federal grant funds, address the short-term financial needs of local businesses and those who are self-employed. The two programs are designed to provide the necessary funding to cover the businesses’ various financial needs including: payroll, rent, utilities and other fixed expenses. The City’s loans do not preclude borrowers from accessing any other loan source. City loans cannot be used to pay for the same itemized expenses that other loans will be used for. In addition, the City has also modified the payment schedule for seven existing loan participants. Payments on current loan programs will be deferred for three months beginning this month. In order to gain feedback on how local businesses have been impacted by the pandemic, the City, together with the East Providence Chamber of Commerce, has distributed a survey to East Providence businesses. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ YZFFNNK Applications for Small Business Relief may be found here: Small Business Assistance: http://www.eastprovidenceri.net/ filestorage/9177/9461/9463/25791/PR_COVID_19_Small_Biz_ Assistance_Loan_%28final%29.pdf Loan Retention: http://www.eastprovidence.com/ filestorage/9177/9461/9463/25791/PR_COVID_19_Job_ Retention_Loan_%28final%29.pdf.

Bluff Erosion Remedy at Crescent Park
(read full article at www.reportertoday.com) The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is partnering with the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) and the City of East Providence to test the effectiveness of “living shoreline” erosion controls at Crescent Park. TNC and the CRMC issued a press release in late April outlining the project to control beach erosion at the park. “The steep coastal bluffs at the site of the former Crescent Park and the adjacent shoreline rise 20 to 30 feet above the narrow beach. Erosion has carved out the lower third of the bluff in several areas. Fallen trees, whose root systems have been undermined, are common features at the base of the bluff. Previous efforts to reduce erosion through traditional practices, such as the placement of riprap and seawalls, have failed,” said the joint statement by Tim Mooney, TNC communications manager and Laura Dwyer, CRMC information coordinator. “At the northern end of Rose Larisa Park, the bank will be cut away to reduce the slope. Stone will be placed at the base of the bluff and logs made of coconut fiber will be installed farther up the slope. The bluff will be planted with native vegetation. Near the southern boundary of the park, small intertidal sills will be constructed, consisting of three low stone structures. Three feet tall, they will be designed to be topped by seawater at high tide. Sand will be added between the sill and the base of the bluff and planted with native salt marsh plants.” The construction contract was awarded to SumCo Eco-Contracting of Salem, Mass. through a competitive bidding process. The project is funded in part through a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Coastal Resiliency Fund. TNC raised additional matching funds with grants from 11th Hour Racing and the RI Coastal and Estuarine Habitat Restoration Trust Fund, administered by CRMC. Total construction cost is $232,000. SumCo will access the project area from the top of Rose Larisa Park and via the end of Beach Road. The two approaches will be developed simultaneously, shifting between the sites, depending on the tide. The work is expected to be completed by mid-May. The project at Rose Larisa Park is part of a larger regional initiative, also funded by NOAA and managed by TNC, to learn how living shorelines perform in New England.

Taunton Avenue Resurfacing
(read full article at www.reportertoday.com) The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) issued a press release to state that they have started a resurfacing project for 0.5 miles of Taunton Avenue (Route 44) from just east of the Pawtucket Avenue intersection to the Massachusetts state line in East Providence. The $4.8 million project includes stormwater improvements to alleviate chronic flooding problems along this road during heavy rainstorms. Work on the roadway itself will begin in late April/early May and may require weekday lane closures between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. At least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times during daytime work. The project is anticipated to be done by Spring 2021.

East Providence Memorial Day Parade American Legion Riverside Post 10 Adjutant
It is with deep and profound regret that we at American Legion Riverside Post 10 will need to cancel the annual Memorial Day Parade for this year. Based on recommdations and guidance from local, state and national officials in regards to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a decision that is not taken lightly as it is normally a great way to pay tribute and honor those that paid the Ultimate Sacrifice. However, in these times, it is only right and necessary that we take the safety, health and well-being of parade participants and parade viewers as our number 1 priority. While the parade may be cancelled we ask parents to take time on Memorial Day weekend to discuss with your children the meaning of Memorial Day. We want to thank you for your understanding and support. We promise that next year, the parade will be bigger and better than ever

As we move on to the 2020 Memorial Day season, we face the challenge of a pandemic health crisis. I’m sure the parade situation is uncertain at this time however, I still think the flags could be put up. They make people happy and especially this year I think PAID FOR BY FRIENDS OF BILLY CONLEY folks could use that,” said Capobianco. Supporters of the Memorial Day flag program have expanded the effort to neighborhoods beyond the parade route in Riverside. “It really is one of the great community efforts in East Providence,” added Capobianco. “Over these past few months we have really seen the pride of people in EP. It is such a wonderful community that has birthday parades, people leaving books out for one another, baking for the community, among so many other things done for people during a quarantine to mostly stay home. We are really fortunate here,” she said. Capobianco has reached out to Mayor Bob DaSilva to see if the City can continue We’re now offering 100% secure, remote tax prep and putting up flags along the parade route. East Providence, RI -- Local nonprofits on the frontlines of responding to the COVID-19 crisis are among the organizations that will share $2.1 million from the COVID-19 Response Fund created by the Rhode Island Foundation and United Way of Rhode Island. Good Neighbors is one of the local organizations that won funding in the latest round of grants from the fund, which now has awarded $5.7 million since last month. The agency received $25,000 to re-stock its food pantry on Turner Avenue. The agency expects the grant will enable it to help as many as 800 households a month for the foreseeable future. “Due to the COVID pandemic, a staggering number of individuals need our food pantry facilities to make ends meet. We’re seeing new faces every time we open,” said Ric Wild, Executive Director. “The grant will enable us to purchase thousands of pounds of food to help feed families.” continued on next page...
Seeking More Names for the Military Honor Roll
An effort is being made to not let citizens of E. Prov. who served in all military events be forgotten. The public is invited to submit names of veterans and members of the armed forces for a virtual Honor Roll tribute. This includes residents who served during peace times, in reserves, and who are currently serving. All present and former residents of E. Prov., as well as Seekonk, MA residents who attended EP High School, who served during and after WWII can participate. The East Providence Military Honor Roll is currently viewable on the East Providence Historical Society ‘s website, ephist. org. It contains historical details how I-195 received the title East Providence Veterans Memorial Expressway (EPVME) in 1961 and nine pages about service members’ contributions. Individuals, their relatives, and friends may submit names. Please provide the last name, rank, first and middle name, military event/ location or the actual years served, and branch. Be sure to designate “in honor of” for a live person and “in memory of” for one who has passed away. Ex. in memory of Carlton, Lt. Donald E., WWI, KIA, Army Names can be submitted to epvme@ hotmail.com until October 2021. Local historian Susan Cady compiles the list. The list will be updated as needed. Suggestions are welcome how to “physically” preserve the names (and short biographies and photos) so the list of names is not lost and the military contributions of our E. Prov. citizens are not forgotten. This “Honor Roll” is part of the 60th anniversary re-dedication celebration for the EP Veterans Memorial Expressway on Nov. 6, 2021. Please let Susan know if you or your veterans’ or civic organization would like to participate in or help. Events include the re-dedication ceremony, parade, “meet, greet, and thank” our military members, music, etc.

Good Neighbors suspended its regular meal site and day shelter programs due to the crisis. It is providing pre-bagged nonperishable items, frozen meats, produce and bread available for pick-up only on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to Good Neighbors, Foster Forward also received a grant. The East Providence-based nonprofit will provide for direct financial assistance and material resources for transition-age youth and foster and adoptive families in its programs. (The full list of awardees and a brief description of what each grant will support is posted here.) “The need is beyond even what we expected. While generous donors have already contributed $7 million, we’re seeing demand for funding grow even faster. Our backlog of applications significantly exceeds the resources that are left and we expect requests will grow by several million dollars, which is why we must keep raising money for the fund in all amounts,” said Neil D. Steinberg, president and CEO of the Foundation. “As we continue to learn more about the heroic work happening every day to serve neighbors in our community, we are hearing from more and more nonprofit leaders who are facing impossible choices, such as reducing frontline staff and cutting essential services,” said United Way of Rhode Island President and CEO Cortney Nicolato. “Rhode Islanders depend on the nonprofit community every day, but today financial support is more critical than ever: our support has the power to provide services to the most vulnerable Rhode Islanders who’ve historically been disproportionately impacted by health disparities.” Gifts to the fund, in any amount, can be made with the Foundation at rifoundation.org/ covid19response or to United Way at uwri.org. Donations will be accepted as long as the need continues.

Kettle Point Construction Presses Forward During COVID-19 Pandemic
The East Providence Waterfront Commission has continued to work hard during the COVID-19 pandemic to assure that we conduct business as usual. Despite a global economic shock that has resulted in a 32 percent downturn in nationwide residential construction during February and March, activity at Kettle Point in East Providence remains strong. Utilizing a remote, virtual meeting format at its April 16, 2020 hearing, the Commission approved the application of Kettle Point Apartments, LLC to modify the last phase of its development with a multi-million dollar project. This latest development will consist of 12 townhomes in two buildings that overlook Squantum Woods. The Waterfront Commission engaged Amy Goins of Ursillo, Teitz & Reitch to provide guidance on the open meeting aspects of this hearing. The meeting was duly advertised in accordance with the recently amended Open Meetings Act issued by Gov. Gina Raimondo on March 16, 2020 and allowed for public review and testimony on this proposal. Construction at Kettle Point is currently in progress at Building 5, a 41-unit apartment building that is the last of five, fourstory Class A apartments at Kettle Point. When completed in the next several months, Jason Kambitsis, senior vice president of Acquisitions and Development for Irwin, Pa.-based A.R. Building Co Inc., anticipates that crews will continue with construction of the new $2.4 million townhomes. Units in both the townhomes and the apartment building include one-, two- and threebedroom layouts in response to market demand. Construction of the Kettle Point townhomes should take between 8 to 10 months with all construction complete by March 2021. Kambitsis thanked the Commission for proceeding with a remote meeting format that will enable construction during this construction season. His firm is pushing strong in Rhode Island to look beyond the current economy and provide jobs for the local workforce. Of the 39 subcontractors hired to date for this project, 20 are from Rhode Island. Construction is continuing, following all state and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guidelines regarding cleanliness and social distancing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some supply chains have been disrupted, his firm is making arrangements to stay on track. Churchill & Banks is also continuing with construction of high-end duplexes at Kettle Point. As of December 2019, 42 of
May 2020 The Reporter the 62 approved condominiums were occupied. Of the eight units currently under construction, four are under contract. Richard Baccari, chairman of Churchill & Banks, anticipates that Kettle Point construction will be wrapped up by mid-2021, a slight delay over previous projections. Waterfront Commission Chairman William Fazioli believes that the efforts of the Commission and staff during these very challenging times will provide a much needed spark for East Providence’s and Rhode Island’s economy. “The ability to adapt to these unprecedented circumstances will favorably position the city and state as the COVID -19 crisis recedes,” Fazioli said. “Business and government continuity during a time of crisis is not only vital to our city, but it’s vital to our economy as a whole,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “Businesses, such as A.R. Building Co. Inc., are adapting to the new realities of this pandemic economy and forging ahead in a safe, responsible manner that will continue to spur investment and economic development in our city.” For more information on Kettle Point please visit: https:// www.eastprovidencewaterfront.com/wp-content/uploads/ sites/5/2020/04/Kettle-Point-a-model-of-Excellence_reduced.pdf

“This is obviously devastating for everyone,” Kelly continued. “It is devastating to all the student athletes, especially the seniors who have been waiting for their final high school season. It is devastating to all the schools. It is devastating to all our communities. It is devastating to everyone. We do not take this decision lightly. It’s awful. There’s no other way to put it.” “My heart breaks for all my athletes in the track & field program and all the dedicated, hardworking athletes throughout the state and the country, particularly the seniors. I miss coaching my kids and seeing them compete. East Providence is a very supportive community who continues to support our kids as best as we can during this crisis,” said EPHS track coach Bob Lyons. EPHS head baseball coach, Bobby Rodericks was looking forward to a productive season with his returning seniors and underclassmen. “Seniors from the Townies Baseball program got 2020 signs placed in their front lawns recently along with getting new hats thanks to Athletic Director Gregg Amore. On behalf of our coaching staff we realize nothing can replace the loss of their senior season but we want to make sure they all know that we love and support them now and forever,” said Rodericks.
Prestigious Rumford Golf Tournament Canceled
The Northeast Amateur Invitational golf tournament, held every year at the Wannamoisett Country Club, has been canceled due to the pandemic crisis. It is the first time in the 56 year history of the tourney that it won’t occur. Every year the top amateur players from throughout the world come to play in this tournament in Rumford. “Our priority is to protect the health and safety of the invitees, officials, volunteers, staff and membership of Wannamoisett Country Club,” said tournament chairman and East Providence native, Ben Tuthill. “We care deeply about amateur golf and hosting one of the top events of the year and make this decision with a heavy heart. Many different considerations went into this decision and we must act responsibly during this pandemic. “We know how disappointing this news is for the players that were invited and planned to participate in the tournament this year. The tournament committee will acknowledge all exemption criteria used for the 2020 field selection and will invite those players to participate in the event next summer.”

People in the News Local Student Rower Qualifies For National Championship
St. Mary Academy – Bay View is best known for its ability to develop academically strong and empowered young women. These students are also talented athletes who compete proudly with the best teams across New England. Bay View is the only secondary school in Rhode Island that offers competitive women’s rowing team. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced barriers to the team this year, but that was not enough to daunt four Bay View rowers. Their persistence and commitment to women’s rowing now find them preparing, as a team, for the USRowing National Championships. Lindsey Williams ’23, of Riverside along with her teammates reached out to Head Coach Lisa Evans with a unique opportunity. These young ladies who are committed to rowing not only in high school but also in college wanted to enter a virtual erg competition, since the opportunity to row on the water this spring has been put on hold. They learned of an opportunity, offered by Rowers Choice in partnership with USRowing, for a one-of-a-kind national erg competition. The competition was developed in response to the ongoing COVID-19 virus outbreak because regattas across the world have been canceled, leaving few competitive options for rowers. Coach Evans was extremely supportive; she found a way to coach them virtually so they could train on their ergs at home. Evans said, “I am extremely proud of these four girls for taking the initiative to compete against dozens of teams and for making it to the championship round of the B Bracket. It takes great discipline and mental and physical toughness to compete on an erg, especially without your teammates’ support, alone in your basement!” The students competed as a team and rose through many qualifying rounds, each based on a famous race like the Harvard–Yale Regatta, in order to reach the national championships. The final round will pose a 2000-meter challenge for the rowers. Lindsey and her teammates will competed and submitted their 2000-meter times and are waiting to hear if they have won a National Championship.

Wedding Announcement Couple Fast-Tracks Wedding for Elderly Mother in Nursing Home Estelle McGovern, a 92-year old resident of Linn Health & Rehabilitation in East Providence, had the perfect wife in mind for her son, Mick. She tried for several years to fix him up with her Certified Nursing Assistant, Susan Nestell, but to no avail. Each time she mentioned it to them, they wanted nothing to do with it. Until one day when Mick came to Linn for a visit, and Susan walked into his mother’s room. It was love at first sight!

Susan Nestell and Mick McGovern's wedding ceremony
Mick and Susan abandoned their December 2020 wedding plans for fear of COVID-19 entering the nursing home where his elderly mother lives and his wife-to-be works. Instead, they held their nuptials outdoors on Saturday, April 18, in the Winslow Gardens courtyard adjacent to the Linn Health building, while Estelle was safely inside the Sunroom behind a closed window just feet away. The light rain and cold weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the wedding couple and their few family members in attendance. She couldn’t have been more thrilled! The groom wore a traditional black tuxServing Rumford, East Providence, and Surrounding Towns edo suit and the bride wore a simple white dress. As a group of television cameras and a newspaper photographer captured the scene, the couple became husband and wife. “It snowed that morning and we thought it was quite fitting, because we were scheduled to be married in December anyway,” stated Mick. “Everything went perfectly - just 11 Ellis Street 45 Mayfair Drive 15 Berwick Place the way we wanted it to happen.” Susan agreed, echoing how grateful they were to Aldersbridge Communities for allowing WE’RE READY FOR SPRING MARKET! SCHOOL Distance Learning Might Force Us to be Separated, However, Martin Middle School is Coming TOGETHER
59 Years Serving Our Community & Neighbors for over 54
1169 South Broadway, East Providence RI
On March 13th, 2020, the world changed and like all schools across the city, state and many across the country we shut the school doors and moved into the world of Distance Learning. One would think, this would separate the school community, however in many ways it has brought us together. Right away, teachers began collaborating, planning, and creating content in Google Classrooms. They have carefully designed lessons with standards that would engage the students and also could be supported by families at home. Our parents and families have taken on a huge role in their child’s education. They have learned how to navigate different technology, create routines while balancing the day to day duties at home including their own professions. In many ways, families have taken on the heaviest lift in distance learning and our educational community has been so impressed with their efforts. Our students have had to balance, manage, complete work without the support of being in the traditional classroom. They have been conscientious, organized and in constant communication with their teachers and their families throughout this distance learning. The feedback has been very positive to start but we know we have a long way to go to achieve the learning we know our students need, however, the Martin Middle School Community is more TOGETHER than ever and I am so PROUD to be Wildcat!

Learning at home differently. Our original theme was tied to our school garden, it was modified to “Let’s Grow Together.... at a safe distance.” There was a daily reading challenge, asking students to read for a certain period of time in a different place (in a fort, with a flashlight, outside). Guest readers were virtual this year, with more than 30 of students’ favorites including East Providence teachers and administrators, community members, and even the Governor. The Scholastic book fair, always a favorite for students and families, was open and available, just online. This gave families a chance to get some great reading materials at an affordable price. Reading at home Each day students participated in an activity tied to our theme. Students searched their yard for different types of plants, watched science videos about seeds and how they grow, planted their own seeds, and completed an art and music project. We wrapped up our week the way we do every year, with our read-a-thon. As a community, we read together but at a safe social distance! Students sat outside if possible (front steps, driveway), and waved to neighbors while they read together. Students were welcome to bring a blanket, pillow, or stuffed animal to read with. Although we have had to be creative and flexible, we still celebrated reading and learned about gardening, plants, and nature in the process. Even though we could not all be together for our annual reading week, Orlo Avenue School created a fun learning experience that students and families enjoyed! Feel free to check out our Virtual Reading Week Flyer: https:// docs.google.com/document/d/1y4M7YcpEQxqRpUJYyvW77o5a E1fdmsB-0w3VrkxFqrQ/edit?usp=sharing
