East Providence News Briefs By Bob Rodericks

Major Changes Ahead for EP School Administration When East Providence schools open on Tuesday, September 1st this year, students and staff will find several new administrators on hand. Due to retirements, resignations and transfers, almost every level of the district, from Central Administration on down will see some changes. “This is the time of year when change can occur in the schools,” said school committee Chairman Charles Tsonos in an interview with The Reporter. “It’s not unusual that this cycle of changes happens every once in awhile,” said Tsonos. A major change for the district will be at the high school where Principal Janet Sheehan has told her staff that she will not return in September as principal. On July 14th the school committee named high school Assistant Principal, Shani Wallace as new Principal, effective August 24th, 2015. Ms. Sheehan has been facing health issues recently and has decided to leave her position as Townie Principal. Shani Wallace is a veteran of East Providence schools having served as an Assistant Principal at Martin Middle School prior to being named Assistant Principal at EPHS. Wallace has been responsible for attendance and discipline as well as administrative academic duties at both Martin and currently the high school. Sheehan and the district haven’t announced her official status, either retirement or resignation or other designation, but Sheehan has informed her staff that she will not return in September. It is unclear if the district advertised the high school principalship as an opening or if Ms. Wallace was just elevated to the post. Replacing Wallace as high school Assistant Principal will be Martin Middle School Principal Frank DeVall. Former Riverside Middle School Principal Sandra Forand will return to the district as Principal of Martin. Forand previously worked at Martin and after a stint as Riverside Middle Principal, took a leave of absence to work for the RI Department of Education. Elaine Allen, the current Assistant Principal at Martin will leave that job to become the Principal of Hennessey Elementary school. Allen will replace Dr. Carrie McWilliams who has resigned from Hennessey to work elsewhere in education.

Stephen Prew, who previously was Principal at Riverside Middle School and was moved to an alternative education program at the high school housed in the career center, will now be the new Principal at Kent Heights Elementary School. Prew is replacing Fatima Avila who is taking a leave as Principal to teach 5th grade at Kent Heights. Former elementary principal David Britto will remain in the alternative ed program at the Career Center. Another major change is the resignation of district Assistant Superintendent Julie Motta. As of this time the school committee has not named a replacement for Motta. Other schools in the districts and their principals are: Career Technical School, Karen Mellen, Director. Riverside Middle School, Dr. Cheri Guerra, Principal. Myron J. Francis School, Lloydanne Leddy, Principal. Oldham School, Donna Peluso, Principal. Orlo Avenue School, Yanaiza Gallant, Principal. Silver Spring School, Kathleen Caffrey, Principal. Waddington School, Patricia Barlow, Principal. Whiteknact School, Dr. Nadine Lima, Principal. The status of elementary school Principal Cheryl Gibbs continues to remain unknown as Gibbs is not assigned to any school. “We may be facing more changes as the Superintendent (Kim Mercer) continues to organize and plan for school staffing. It’s all under the Superintendent’s purview to place people,” added Chairman Tsonos. Tsonos wanted to make note of the district’s ever-changing staff. “We have some new energetic people in the city. We are really pleased with the hiring of Orlo Principal Yanaiza Gallant. Her appointment was a homerun for us. She is a great team player, very energetic and thinks the world of East Providence,” said Tsonos. Should any of the district’s current administrators choose to seek the vacant position of Assistant Superintendent, there could be further changes to the system’s administrative flowchart. At least two and maybe more current building administrators have applied for the Assistant Superintendent’s position. More News Briefs on next page...

State - Cease and Desist RES Operations

In a certified letter sent to RES owner Ken Foley, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has said RES must “immediately cease accepting and processing construction and demolition debris...” The July 15, 2015 letter was signed by department Supervising Engineer, Laurie Grandchamp. “The Department’s Administrative Adjudication Division rendered a decision dated July 9, 2015 in regards to the Notice of Revocation issued to Railside Environmental Services (RES) on February 5, 2015. In the Decision and Order, the Hearing Officer sustained and upheld the Department’s letter revoking RES’s registration. As a result, RES must adhere to the closure in accordance with the approved Closure Plan,” said the RIDEM letter that the Reporter has been provided. Although RES has been ordered to close its outdoor operation based on a Hearing Officer’s ruling, it is assumed that RES will appeal legally. “Please be aware, any closure activity that deviates from the previously approved closure plan shall be submitted in writing, and written approval from the Department shall be obtained prior to implementation. Once the closure plan is fully implemented, the Department shall be notified so that an inspection may be conducted by Department personnel. Lastly, a professional engineer registered in the State of Rhode Island must certify that the facility is properly closed in accordance with the approved closure plan,” wrote the State engineer for the DEM. The letter was also sent to various state officials and attorneys. In a matter which related to a February 5th, 2015 ruling by and was appealed by RES, Hearing Officer David Kerins on a Motion for Summary Judgment filed by the RIDEM, the following conclusion was reached: “The issue of the revocation of RES’ s Registration is simple. The enactment of the Refuse Disposal Act eliminated the option of registration to RES as well as all other former Registration holders. The effect of the legislation is to restrict DEM’s authority to issue only licenses for C & D operators and not registrations. There is no room in this analysis for consideration of the individual zoning status of former registration holders. Registration is no longer allowed for parties wishing to operate a C & D facility and DEM is entitled to the entry of a Summary Judgment as a matter of Law.”

East Bay Tavern Shut Down by Council

After several tumultuous months of complaints and concerns with the underground bar known as the East Bay Tavern, the East Providence City Council revoked the liquor license of the bar. The bar has closed with a sign stating that they are on vacation. Tax records show that the bar is owned by DL Enterprises, Denise

Laidlaw. The property has been owned by the East Providence Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) in the past and the FOP is still listed as a co-owner by the Vision Appraisal tax company. The total valuation of the building and land by the city is $382,600. All five city council members voted to take away the bar’s license at a special show-cause hearing held on July 28th. The city council has revoked the bar’s license three times now to operate, based on patron behavior and lack of management control of the situation. The bar has failed to fully arrange for and pay for recent police security details. The current council action came after a violent confrontation recently occurred on bar property. The bar at 305 Lyon Avenue was built in 1958. It sits adjacent to the Pierce Field athletic complex and next door to a group of three busy little league fields. The bar has been known as the Paddy Wagon, The 305 Club and recently the East Bay Tavern.

City Manager Search Moving Ahead

The city council search for a permanent City Manager has moved along with some 15 applicants for the job. Several managers have held the job in recent years as the City dealt with a police chief controversy and moved into a state budget commission takeover of all City finances. Paul Lemont, a two-time former City Manager is currently serving as Acting City Manager. Lemont was brought back as interim because another former manager Peter Graczykowski was fired after a short tenure as city manager. Graczykowski, hired by a prior city council in September of 2011, was never given a binding employment contract. Graczykowski was hired after another former manager, Peter Brown was not retained as the city’s chief executive. Lemont would like to stay on and become permanent. Lemont has made it clear that he didn’t think that the budget commission was needed here. Since Lemont was brought back the City has seemingly been on a good financial stretch and includes budget surpluses. Mayor Tom Rose is happy with the 15 or so applicants for the top job. After speaking with Rose, it is clear that he would like to see the new manager be very technologically adept. “We need someone who is tech savvy and can help us become a business friendly city,” said the City’s ceremonial Mayor.

Water Main Cleaning and Lining Project

The City of East Providence Department of Public Works announces in a press release that the water main cleaning and lining project to improve aging water mains in the City is well underway. This work will rehabilitate aging water system pipelines some of which are over 100 years old to improve water quality and system operations for the City residents and businesses. This phase of the project will take place in the Rumford section of the City where work has commenced on Roger Williams Avenue. The contractor for this project is W. Walsh Company. The cleaning and lining process allows for more pipeline to be improved as it is a cost effective trenchless technology compared with complete replacement which requires full road cuts and restoration. For more information on the cleaning and lining process, water customers may view the W. Walsh Company website at www.wwalsh.com. The project will also consist of complete replacement of some sections of water pipeline in order to increase pipe size capacity, as well as include the installation of new valves and hydrants. Water customers within the project area will receive more detailed information on the project.

The East Providence Middle School Athletics Boosters Club Seeking New Volunteers

The East Providence Middle School Athletics Boosters Club is here to make a difference for our middle school student-athletes, however in order to accomplish that we seeking new volunteers. We are looking for additional board members, as well as a volunteer grant writer, webmaster and other roles. We are also looking for new ways to fundraise for the middle school sports teams. While the loss of middle school sports is now a fading memory, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to help supplement what the school department can’t afford to supply, but we need your support! The purpose of the Booster Club was not just to bring sports back, but to maintain and support all the teams from both schools with any needs. There are still many needs across the board for all teams at both Martin and Riverside. Some examples include soccer nets, pinnies, catchers gear for baseball, bats, tees, field improvements, etc. With that being said, we need to continue to fundraise and add to our group. We donated $1000 to John Carnevale’s Riverside and Martin Gym Project, which was greatly needed as all teams use the gym from time to time, whether be it a game or practice. We also supported the Riverside Competitive Cheer team with the purchase of new mats. This was a great step into improvements we would like to help with. But without people in the city, we won’t be able to continue these efforts. We need people that may no longer be part of the middle school but would like to give back to a community that once gave to them. We need current coaches from both schools and even former ones for input on how to better help the teams. We need parents of students currently in elementary school who want to see the future for their kid’s sports. We need people to help us whether long term or when you can. Consider the booster club as a way to give back but also an investment for the future. If you can’t donate time, you can donate money at any time. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization, all donations are tax deductible. Another great way to support us is to use AmazonSmile when you make your Amazon.com purchases and select the booster club as your charity of choice. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or have any questions. Please email contact@epmsboosters.org, call 401-400-1680 or send mail to PO Box 14487, East Providence, RI, 02914. You can also visit our website at www.epmsboosters.org. On behalf of our Board of Directors, Venus Tavares, President

Thanks to East Providence Rescue

Early one morning I was driving back from the pharmacy and started having trouble breathing. By the time I got home I could hardly breathe. Called 911 and an East Providence rescue truck arrived. The rescue personnel got me out of my truck and into their van. They immediately got me on oxygen and checked me out from head to toe while transporting me to the emergency room. Of course when I got in the emergency room there were so many people working on me it was incredible. During all of this one of the E.P. Rescue personnel was waiting in the room with me. When things slowed down in the ER I gave the thumbs up sign to the rescue person as my way of saying thank you. He just smiled and gave me the thumbs up sign. I was admitted to the hospital and the room I had was just over the emergency room entrance. I watched East Providence Rescue Trucks, R1,R2 AND R3 show up many times during the day and night. I was amazed how many people they brought in. These Rescue people don’t get the recognition and credit they deserve. If it wasn’t for them, I most likely would not have survived. So if you see one of these trucks, give them the right of way as they are trying to save some one’s life. Who knows, some day it might be your life they are saving! Ken Handshaw

Meet EPHS’s New Principal - Shani Wallace Wallace is 17th EPHS Principal

“I can tell you that I am both honored and excited to be the Principal of EPHS. I have been dedicated to East Providence right from the start of my career. I love the East Providence community. I love the diversity it has to offer. I enjoy the challenges that the diversity brings to a community,” - Shani Wallace. And so begins a new era at East Providence High School. A major change for the district will be at the high school where Principal Janet Sheehan has told her staff that she will not return in September as principal. On July 14th the school

By Bob Rodericks committee named high school Assistant Principal, Shani Wallace as new Principal, effective August 24th, 2015. “It is nice to already know, firsthand, the amazing staff that East Providence High School has. I have been a witness to the intense work that all have put forward over the last few years to improve and expand opportunities for students. Their dedication to the student body and East Providence as a whole is amazing. I look forward to working with everyone and seeing what else we can do to make East Providence High School thrive,” Wallace told The Reporter. EPHS for years, has been the state’s largest high school. In recent years the enrollment has dipped to around 1,600 students but still remains one of Rhode Island’s largest. The school includes a Career and Technical Center on its’ campus. The high school has gone through major building recommendations and has done well academically of late. “I’ve been in the EP School system for 23 years. I started subbing at Martin, Riverside and EPHS right out of college in 1992,” recalled Wallace. “I was hired as an 8th grade Mathematics teacher in 1994. I taught for 6 years. I absolutely loved teaching and my heart is still in the classroom. I have a high respect for the ever building and continuous workload teachers face on a day to day basis. With the push to continuously increase rigor, challenge all students yet, meet the individual needs of every student in their classrooms does not go unrecognized by me and will always be valued. I understand and respect the time, energy and commitment it takes to do so,” continued Wallace. Wallace has extensive experience in all

aspects of school management. She has been at the forefront of middle and high school discipline and security planning and has been active in academic oversight at the high school. Wallace, 45, has a Masters Degree in Secondary Administration and was hired as a House Leader at Martin MS and then hired as Assistant Principal in 2001. “I was extremely proud to be a part of the Martin Middle School Faculty. I was thrilled to be a part of the change and growth of Martin transforming itself from a Junior High School to a true Middle School in concept and action and then supporting and witnessing Martin become a High Performing school at the time was incredible. The staff and students deserved that recognition,” said Wallace. In September of 2009, Wallace was transferred to the High School as Assistant Principal. “I can say with sincere honesty that transformation of EPHS from where it was in 2009 to where it is now in 2015 is incredible. The amount of change that has occurred cannot go unrecognized. Both staff and students have shown incredible strength and focus in leading and stepping up to an enormous amount of pressure surrounding changes in expectations of educational standards, rules, regulations, culture, and even physical changes within and around the building itself. I have been lucky and can say I have worked with a great team of Administrators, Deans and a wonderful group of teachers that helped make EPHS what it is today. Again, I look forward to working with everyone and seeing what else we can do to make East Providence High School thrive,” added an excited Wallace.

Beverly Pettine Retires from The Hornbine One-room School Museum in Rehoboth

Cathy Potter, a member of the Rehoboth Historical Commission, presents a proclamation from the Rehoboth Selectmen to Ms. Beverly Pettine, a resident of East Providence. On June 15th the Third Grade at Palmer River School in Rehoboth gathered in the auditorium to recognize Beverly Pettine, a resident of East Providence. Ms. Pettine has run the Hornbine One-room Schoolhouse Program for the last 17 years. She retired from her many school program responsibilities at the end of this school year. The students saved their pennies this spring to buy books which were dedicated to Ms. Pettine and donated to the Palmer River School Library. All the books were related to one-room schoolhouses and will be available in the library for students and teachers. Rebecca Smith and Cathy Potter, from the Rehoboth Historical Commission, were on hand to present Beverly Pettine with a proclamation from the town selectmen commending her for her seventeen years of volunteer work. In 1968 the Hornbine School Association, which was a group devoted to the preservation of Rehoboth’s One-room Schoolhouse Museum, was a vibrant active group. But after several decades, the membership declined and they were unable to complete the necessary activities needed to operate a functioning program. Beverly Pettine, who taught third grade in Swansea, retired seventeen years ago. Soon, she joined the Hornbine School Association and revived the Hornbine School Program. Ms. Pettine continued to build the program and now they have about eight hundred students visit the school each season. Students from three Rumford classrooms attended in early May. Over the years, Beverly Pettine recruited and trained several people to teach at the school. Ms. Pettine wrote a variety of realistic but non-threatening lessons for homeschoolers, third graders and other grades which attended the school for the day.

August 2015 The Reporter Beverly revived the Open House Sundays from June to September. It wasn’t long before we had many Sunday visitors from around the country. Now, we have dozens of visitors each season. Bev always kept the Hornbine School decorated with bird’s nests, flowers grown in her own garden, and colored chalk drawings drawn by her niece. Pumpkins, hay bales and dried corn were prominent outside the school in the autumn. Beverly arranged for building maintenance. This included the landscaping, carpentry, emergency repairs and the chimney sweep. Beverly loves the Hornbine School and poured hours of effort into it each year. She often spent her own money for decorations, books, and other materials. She spent many hours organizing historical Hornbine School photos, news articles and other information into book binders that are organized by year. This will insure that the information contained in the binders will not get lost. Rehoboth has benefited from Beverly Pettine’s selfless efforts during her active seventeen year association with the Hornbine School. Thank you Beverly Pettine. We are going to miss you! The Hornbine School Museum is open to the public each 2nd and 4th Sunday, 2-4p.m. It is situated at the corner of Baker and Hornbine Roads in southeast Rehoboth.

Paddle into the Past

Join us on Saturday, August 15th for Mill and Village History in Smithfield

Smithfield – Paddle with the Woonasquatucket River (Woony) crew on Sunday, August 15, 2015 at 11:00am. Don Burns, member of the Smithfield Conservation Commission and the Smithfield Historical Society, will delight us with Georgiaville Mill and Village History. Join us for a paddle on scenic and peaceful Georgiaville Pond in Smithfield. Paddle past pine tree covered islands and a town park. “Participants will enjoy the natural beauty of Georgiaville Pond, a hidden recreational gem in Smithfield,” says Burns. This is a 2 mile paddle around the pond. Burns explains, “At the far end of the pond, we will take a walk through the mill village of Georgiaville, learn its history and view examples of the remaining mill housing, mill store, boarding house. The tour is based on the Blackstone National Heritage Corridor and National Park walking tour of Georgiaville Pond.” Don Burns and his wife Joan built a house in Smithfield, RI on Georgiaville Pond in the Woonasquatucket Watershed in 1966. He soon started his involvement with efforts to improve water quality in Smithfield including helping form a group to bring sewers to the town. He joined the Smithfield Conservation Commission in 1977 and has been its chair for the last 25 years. That led to helping to start a land trust in Smithfield and joining the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) in the mid-1990s. Don now serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the WRWC. The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) provides canoes, kayaks, paddles and life jackets, or paddlers may bring their own boats. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The cost is $40/person and includes your choice of a canoe or kayak. If using your own boat, the price is $20/person. Family rate is $80 maximum, for a family of five or less. On all trips, life jackets are required for all paddlers.

August 2015 The Reporter Contact Paddle Leader, Erik Talley at the WRWC at etalley@ wrwc.org or (401) 481-1376 to register and for more details. Advance sign-up is required. The WRWC’s Paddle into the Past Recreational Series pairs historians with great outdoor fun. Enjoy downtown Providence from a whole new view or visit ponds and mills in quiet Johnston and Smithfield. We will tour centuries old houses, and historic villages. Our historians will delight both young and old with stories of the past and how present day Rhode Island came to be. The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (www.wrwc. org) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that works to encourage, support and promote the restoration and preservation of the Woonasquatucket River Watershed as an environmental, recreational, cultural, and economic asset of the State of Rhode Island. The organization offers year round opportunities for the community to engage with the river and the watershed, through paddle trips, bike tours, environmental education, festivals, and restoration projects. Newman Congregational Church, United Church of Christ Announces

“Godspell” Auditions

September 8th and 9th at 7:00 pm and September 12th at 11 am

A masterful retelling of the original sensation, injected with contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements. Auditions have been set for September 8th and 9th at 7:00 pm and September 12th at 11 am at Newman Congregational Church, UCC - 100 Newman Avenue, Rumford, RI. Rehearsals will be held throughout September, October and November. Performances will be November 20-22. Please prepare one vocal piece (not from Godspell) for the audition. You will also be asked to do a reading from the script. Please spread the word about “Godspell” especially to different church groups in the area. This timeless tale of friendship, loyalty and love has touched the hearts of countless theatregoers all over the world. Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from 3-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children Of Eden); and it took the world by storm. Led by the international hit, “Day By Day,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs including “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.” Newman UCC is an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ and extends this invitation to one and all, living out the example of Jesus’ extravagant welcome. Newman Congregational Church, United Church of Christ is located at 100 Newman Avenue, Rumford, RI 02916

The Reporter August 2015

SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTS By Bob Rodericks

The Boys of Summer

(Grayer, Older For Some - But It's Baseball)

On a sweltering hot late July evening, The Reporter stopped by busy Pierce Stadium. The newly refurbished John Carnevale inspired basketball courts were jam packed with spectators and players, an area with soccer activity was busy, people walked the football track while still others strolled around the shady, picturesque grounds. And in the large baseball field the East Providence Marlins of the RI Independent Amateur Baseball league played a baseball game against the Cornerstone Pub. Almost 300 adult players make up some 12 teams. Tom Warzeka started the East Providence team back in 1997. "There was no East Providence team at this level," said Warzeka who has often served as a manager for the team. "This league provides a competitive venue for older guys who love baseball to keep playing. They're not going to the pros but this is pretty good baseball," Warzeka said. On this night about 30 fans were watching the game. Pitching for the EP Marlins this game was Steve Leonardo of North Providence. Leonardo played and graduated from North Providence High School in 2007 and played for URI for one year. "It keeps me active, I love baseball and want to play this game until I can't play it anymore," said Leonardo. "I play some softball too but it's just not the same. I love to pitch and this league gives me the opportunity to compete," added Leonardo who is 25. These players are either in college or have regular day jobs. Some work in restaurants, stores, teach school or work in an array of regular jobs. On any given night a team doesn't know who is available to make game time. East Providence High School Head Coach Bobby Rodericks also plays for the Marlins. Rodericks at 34 is the team's regular catcher and serves as a team manager and this year, the team

Marlins Bobby Rodericks on First Base.

Marlins Skyluar Neal General Manager. Rodericks began this hot summer day conducting the Townie Baseball Camp which kept him at Pierce Stadium with 5 year olds through high schoolers from about 8 am until 2 pm. "Well I left the field for a couple of hours and came right back to play in our game for 7 pm," said Rodericks. "I joined this team in 1999 and have played since then." Rodericks played for EPHS graduating in 1998. He next played for Rhode Island College and now teaches physical education/health at Martin Middle School. "It's baseball and its' still a good game. We compete at a high level and it is very competitive. I'm not ready for softball yet," he said defiantly. At age 34 Rodericks is a catcher, a grueling position at any level but especially competitive hardball. He has made 175 consecutive starts at catcher. "Many former Townies are now playing for us and that makes it special to see that. I enjoy now playing alongside some of my former players," said the Townie coach. In 16 games so far, Rodericks is batting .327 and is tied for the team lead with 5 stolen bases. He led the league in hitting in 2010 and 2011. One of those Ep players is recent EP graduate Colin Costa. Costa just finished his first year playing ball for RIC. "It's great playing with Coach Rodericks now. I've played at Pierce field ever since I can remember. I want to keep playing baseball as far as I can go," said Costa. "My dream is to play four years in college and who knows how far I can go," Costa said. Skyluar Neal, now 26, played for Western Oklahoma State College Baseball, winning the National 2011 Junior College World Series and were the 2012 runners-up. "This is the closest I can get to competing at a pro level," said Neal. "It's fun and we are serious at the same time. I feel like it's Little League but grown up," Neal laughs. Neal also instructs in the Townie Baseball Camp. "I have children now, so I have to slow down a bit," said Neal. Ben Duarte enjoys the league. "It's a good mix of older guys and many college players. We are represented by several New England area colleges and more local players are joining the team," said Duarte. "I enjoy this a lot, have fun and still get serious about

August 2015 The Reporter baseball. I like working with some of the kids," said Duarte. Other Marlin players from East Providence through the years have included Chris Zollo, Alex Hurley, Nick Karalekas, Colin Costa, Joe Carnevale, Scott Melo, CJ Woods, Keith Grant, Jasiah Hatch, Justin Rocha, Ryan McKinnon, Alan and Dwayne Correia, Jay Oldham, Dan Furtado, Ben Johnston and the late Matt Wall. Alan Correira is the Marlins all-time hits leader with Rodericks closing in on that mark. On the night we visited, the Marlins lost the game but they are fighting for 2nd place. The top 8 teams will make a playoff post-season. The Marlins have won the title twice and hope to do it again. We'll post their playoff schedule at reportertoday.com. And so these boys of summer are fighting back older age. The hair is thinning and graying and the pains last a little longer - but they love baseball and they still play a pretty entertaining game of baseball. Best of all may be the price of admission for fans which is free. Grab some peanuts and come watch a baseball game. There is little league action occurring at press time. Updates will be provided at reportertoday.com.

Let's keep pushing for unity and keep this city rocking," said Carnevale in his almost evangelical style. Indeed, long time observers of City goings-on cannot remember a recent time when city workers and administrators would work so well with volunteers. "Gone is much of the union angst and worker apathy of the past. We are all working together to make this a better city," said a union member with many years of service. If that wasn't enough, the Carnevale movement has repaired much of the high school tennis court area. "More than 200 hours of hard volunteer work is what the wonderful people of East Providence just gave to their community! Recently our team embarked on a weeklong task of fixing 1500 linear feet of structural cracks on the EPHS Tennis Courts so that the students of East Providence could play on a safe athletic surface," said Carnevale. "Believe me when I say, this task was nothing even close to glorious work and really took a team of persistent people who wouldn't give up! Some of these cracks were 2 inches wide by 6 inches deep and made this court unsafe and virtually unplayable! A 100% labor intensive and certainly a dirty task to repair them, the volunteers of this community stepped up and crushed the first phase of this project saving roughly $6000 dollars off the cost of this project!" On and on he goes...

The juggernaut known as John Carnevale & friends continues to facelift East Providence as the Hull Street Playground area and the high school tennis courts are the latest recreation spots to receive some major work. In a refrain heard by local residents before, Carnevale described the refurbishing of Hull Street: "This community has waited so patiently for so long to see this beautiful playground be transformed for their youth! Now it is time to bring this entire community together and focus on one common goal; to bring back the love surrounding one of the best recreational facilities in Rhode Island! As promised and right on schedule, our team of volunteers, will give our entire hearts over the next few weeks to turn this local landmark into the absolute best in Rhode Island!" Carnevale indeed delivered as the Hull Street recreation area in the Whiteknact School area has been transformed. "The HULL STREET Basketball Restoration Project being completed ahead of schedule for our wonderful youth to enjoy this summer!! Great job to all involved making this happen and having a sense of urgency to restore this great community!!!" In a discussion with The Reporter, Carnevale wanted to stress how many of these proj-

4 Ways To Bring Order To Another School Year (BPT) - It’s that time of year again; time for class projects and quizzes, field trips and friends, recesses and recitals. Yes it’s time for another school year and for parents, that can mean a little bit more stress as well. If the last school year left you feeling more like a survivor than a thriver, take heart. The following tips will help you get a handle on things from the get-go so you and your children can enjoy everything this year has to offer. * Make your morning routine a team effort. Everyone wins in the morning when you work together. Set a goal to leave by a certain time and make it a fun task by giving each of your kids a role. Younger kids can focus on brushing their teeth and getting dressed while older kids can be named team leaders and help their younger siblings get ready. When everyone works together, you’ll be amazed at what can be accomplished. And when you leave on time, don’t forget to celebrate. A little positive reinforcement will get everyone excited to be part of the team. * Create a lunch plan. Packing a lunch should be an easy task, not an obstacle. Try and get organized by developing a 5-day lunch planner. Map out what your kids - and even you - will eat for lunch each day. Include fruits, vegetables, breads, proteins and a fun treat like Entenmann’s Little Bites Party Cakes or Sara Lee Brownie Chocolate Chip Cakes. This allows you to provide a balanced meal, allow for portion control and put a smile on your child’s face when they open their lunchbox! Once the menu is planned, you can shop with your child in advance for any ingredients or supplies you’ll need and prevent that early morning scramble - and make it fun! * Pack the night before. Eliminate the risk of forgetting projects or homework by getting your children in the habit of packing their school bags the night before. This will give everyone the time they need to get everything in order and cut another task from the morning routine. * Quell afternoon hunger with a snack. The hectic nature of the morning can quickly return in the afternoon if you haven’t prepared a snack for your kids to enjoy as they do their homework. To help, Kathleen Robbins, head baker at Entenmann’s Little Bites and Sara Lee Snacks, has created two DIY homework helpers, the Little Bites Party Cakes Caterpillars and the Sara Lee Brownie Chocolate Chip Snack Kabobs, featuring Entenmann’s Little Bites Party Cakes and Sara Lee Snacks Brownie Chocolate Chip Cakes. These snacks will satisfy your kids during their homework sessions. You can find these fun and easy DIY recipes on the Sara Lee Snacks Facebook page, Little Bites Facebook Page and YouTube. The start of another school year always adds a bit more hustle to your normal routine, but a little extra planning can help. By using the tips above and getting your kids onboard, you’ll be able to pass the first tests of this school year with ease. Editor’s Note: To enter the Entenmann’s Little Bites “Life of a Lunchbox” sweeps, running from August 1 - September 25, and for official rules, visit the Little Bites Facebook Page. No purchase necessary.

(BPT) - They grow up fast, don’t they? One minute they’re in a car seat and the next you’re picking out a school backpack. The transition to preschool and kindergarten is a big leap for most families and sometimes it can feel like a roller coaster ride. There are some obvious ways to prepare your kids for these changes: buying school supplies, getting them used to waking up on time, eating breakfast and possibly even taking a school bus ride. But there are some not-so-obvious preparations, too, like preparing yourself to take on a brand new role - as the parent of a school-aged child. “As parents, it’s so easy to focus on our kids and what they need that we forget to consider what we need,” says Donna Hunt O’Brien, an expert in early child development and Director of Training, Curriculum & Program Innovation at Parents as Teachers, an organization devoted to supporting families and young children.

Your Wake-Up Call

Dear Dave, My husband and I are both 50, and we make about $50,000 a year. We have a little bit of debt, and recently my mother-in-law moved in with us due to health issues. We’ve always gotten by, but now we’re struggling with the additional expense of having her with us. We love her, but we’re unsure what to do financially. Do you have any suggestions? Jen Dear Jen, Anytime things get tight and something like that happens, it’s your wake-up call. It’s the phone ringing, so I’m going to tell you to pick up the phone. It’s telling you that you’ve been kind of sloppy and disorganized with your finances in the past, but you’ve made just enough money to get away with it. Her moving in tightened things up, and that’s understandable to a point. But it has shone a spotlight on the fact that you’re going to have to start doing a written plan and behaving. Chances are you’re going to have to cut back on some stuff, because you’ve chosen to take care of her. This is an honorable choice and a wonderful thing you’re doing, by the way. With this added responsibility you’ve taken on — and many Americans are facing the same thing — you’re going to find yourselves on one end of the Sandwich Generation. They’re sandwiched between taking care of their parents and taking care of their grown kids. And the way you handle it is with a written budget. The good news is that with a detailed plan, you can analyze whether you need extra income, if you need to cut some expenses or both. You’ve got to create a little margin to have a clear picture of your future. If you just wander along without a plan, you’re going to make a mess out of this, and it’s going to get bad fast. —Dave

What Percentage?

Dear Dave, What percentage of your total net worth should your personal residence be during retirement? Sue Dear Sue, Honestly, I don’t have a set percentage for this kind of thing. The larger your net worth, the smaller the percentage would be. Let’s say you’re worth $5 million. In this scenario, you wouldn’t want to have 50 percent in your home. But if you’re worth $150,000, you’re probably going to have more than 50 percent in your home. So, the smaller your net worth is, the larger the percentage your home will likely be. That’s very reasonable, and it’s one way you can look at. If you’re in the million-dollar range of net worth, I don’t think I’d want to have half or more of it in my house. But I think you see how I’m looking at that. You want to try and have as small a portion as possible, but you also have to have a home that’s suitable for your needs. —Dave

The Rebate Explanation

Dear Dave, How do cash-back rebates work on electronics and other items? Dan Dear Dan, I like this question. Most consumers don’t think about how the process works. They only care that it’s benefitting them from a financial standpoint. Let’s say you buy an item for $1,000, and you get a cash rebate for $100. Basically, you just paid $900 for that item, right? So, what the companies are trying to do is incentivize certain retailers to buy a particular product or amount of that product, yet sort of protect the sticker price in the minds of the consumers. To me, it’s really a little ridiculous. Why not simply take off the money, and price it at $900? That keeps retailers from jerking around with the margins. It purifies the process a little bit, but it adds to the hassle. Good question, Dan! —Dave
