Is Anyone Listening?
Take aways from the Special Town Meeting held on Mon, Oct. 24, 2022
Because over 600 signatures were collected to support the meeting, it does not mean 600 voters support the project. To the gentleman who believes the library is an extension of our school district. Please know if the library had the money the school district has which is 10 million-dollars over the state net required, they would have ½ the funding needed for the new library project as presented. To the lady who said at some point if your car is falling apart, it is time to buy a new one. Keep in mind buying the car is not the problem, paying for it is the problem. To the gentleman that chastised the Finance Committee. They did their job. Assessing the spending practices of the town is well within their authority. It was great to hear them speak up about the anticipated $24 million asking price and why it is unacceptable as is. To the gentleman that barked at the Board of Selectmen because one member chose to point out an error in the handout given by the library. Selectman Andrade was right to do so. If the information is incorrect, it should be noted otherwise people would make accusations about “bad” information. Selectman Andrade did his job. To anyone who verbally abused speakers. You have no right to do so. If someone is not a town meeting regular, they may not understand protocol. Mocking them with insults of being stupid just shows your ignorance not theirs. continued on next page...
Going Home Close your eyes Anywhere. Put them In view. The family You know. The members You knew. See the Familiar place You gathered. A place where Everyone mattered. Look back. See your home. If you’re Not there May you Not feel Alone. Thank you, Don Gardner Seekonk

Also, I know it is snarkism, but the next time the School Committee argues decorum with parents at their meetings think about the behavior of a few of their relatives in the audience of the town meeting. Practice what you preach as they say. It should be said (yet again) that the people of Seekonk need to be more involved with what goes on around us. The finances that support our services townwide need to be looked at closely every year. A speaker said we need to invest in our town. That person is correct, but we already have invested in a brand-new Aitken Elementary School, calling it expansion is a joke, Senior Center and plans are in the works for a DPW Headquarters and South End Fire Station. If you want these things, you must look at how we are spending money now. Creating debt exclusions over and over is adding to your tax bill. While people will say it is only $40 more per month for the next 20 years it does not consider reassessments done on our property or the economy and business expectations. The businesses in Seekonk pay the biggest portion of our tax revenue. Should they fail, what happens to our debt? Taxes almost never go down. By the way even though the Chairman of the Library Trustees says there is no café planned for the new building he said there will be a gathering space for people to bring in coffee or whatever and allow them to sit and read in café style chairs and tables. If it walks like a duck………QUACK!! Thank you to those who endured the long evening. The next Town Meeting is November 14, 2022, at the same place, at the same time. Doreen Taylor - Seekonk
A Veteran Thank You to Rehoboth
On Veteran’s Day the Nation remembers our veterans. For this we are thankful as Veterans. Please know that, as a small country town, Rehoboth does an outstanding job remembering veterans, not only on Veteran’s Day, but all year round. Our town provides a Veteran Van and has a dedicated Rehoboth Veteran’s Agent, Jake Kramer, a retired combat veteran, who coordinates veteran rides to Veteran Administration (VA) hospital medical appointments. The town allows town Veterans to apply and be selected for the privilege of driving fellow veterans to their appointments. As a Veteran, on behalf of the town veterans, I want to thank Rehoboth for the support to veterans. Gary Zimmer - Rehoboth Army Veteran

10-25-2022 Special Town Meeting
As you know, the Board of Selectmen voted to hold a Fall Town Meeting on October 25, 2022. I would personally like to thank Kathleen Conti, retired Rehoboth Town Clerk, for agreeing to be Temporary Town Clerk at the 10-25 Town Meeting. As Town Clerk, I was also responsible for closing the 10-25-22 In-Person Early Voting session for the 11-8-22 Election and prepare for the next day’s In-Person Early Voting session and unable to be in two places at one time. The work I needed to do was on the State Computer, which is only accessible from my office at Town Hall. I ended up working until 9:45 that night so by Kathy agreeing to be temporary Town Clerk, the 10/25 Town Meeting could take place while I also honored my legal election requirements for the In-Person Early Voting Sessions. For your information, every day of In-Person Early voting is a mini election which requires considerable work of both the election workers and town clerk’s office to prepare and update the data necessary so we can have an accurate, safe and secure election. Thank you, Kathy, for helping us out. Thank you also everyone who stepped up to the plate to help with the Town Meeting, especially the Election Workers, many of whom also worked the 10-25 Early Voting session along with Odete, Mike Viveiros and his staff, Derek Rousseau and Gary Zimmer. You all made the 10-25-22 Town Meeting a success ~ thank you!

Historic Home and Structure Markers Would Make for a Permanent and Memorable Christmas Gift this Holiday Season
The Rehoboth Historical Commission strives to preserve the wonderful history of Rehoboth, and to help bring awareness of the history of our town to its citizens. Rehoboth is filled with old homes, barns, and other historical structures, some dating back to the 1600s. Many have preserved their originality, while others have been updated to more conform to modern times. No matter the condition of the home, or structure, the history provides the building with personality, and makes for a meaningful property. To celebrate these historical structures, the Rehoboth Historical Commission has created an application for property owners whose home or historic building date prior to 1901 and would like to have their property recognized. The attractive 9 x 12-inch marker will contain the name given to the property, the approximate date of construction, and the seal of the Rehoboth Historical Commission. The marker and application process will not place the house or building onto any historical register or affect it in any way. It is simply a way to give recognition and to celebrate the old home, barn, or building. An example of the marker, along with applications, may be found at both the Goff Memorial Hall/Blanding Library on Bay State Road and the Rehoboth Town Hall. The application may also be downloaded from the town website and may be found under the “Boards & Committees” tab and then “Historical Commission”. The cost of the marker is one hundred dollars and will cover the cost of the sign, and extra proceeds will be used for historical education and programs. These markers afford a great opportunity to have an historic home or structure properly recognized and to show our community how many beautiful antique homes and buildings survive in our historic town of Rehoboth.

The Rehoboth Events Committee hosted the 3rd annual Fall Porch Decorating Contest 2022 this month. The participants truly staged some spectacular displays in one of two categories, Traditional Fall Decor and Halloween. The displays included motion-activated speaking animatronic figures, simulated smoke & fire, a troupe of dancing skeletons and elaborate, haunted graveyards. The fall decorations while not as elaborate, displayed design elegance, artistry and creativity. Debt Exclusion Vote for Bristol-Plymouth November 8th
By Joe Siegel On November 8, Rehoboth voters will be asked to approve a debt exclusion to pay for the $305 million Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School construction. The building project was approved last March. Although the project was rejected in Rehoboth, there were enough votes for passage in the member communities which included Berkley, Bridgewater, Dighton, Middleborough, Raynham, and Taunton. There were 3,353 “yes” votes in favor of a new building, while 3,047 voted “no.” The total “yes” votes amounted to 52.4 percent of the vote. Selectman Michael Deignan said the cost to the town would be $550,000 for the first year. If the debt exclusion is not approved, the money would have to be taken from town services. Deignan said the $550,000 number would fluctuate every year depending on the number of students from Rehoboth attending Bristol-Plymouth. “That $550,000 would be split among all the homeowners and all the businesses in Rehoboth that pay property taxes,” Deignan explained. “The person with a $300,000 house is going to pay a lot less than somebody with a $600,000 house or a million dollar house.” The property tax increase will last for 30 years. “As an entity, the Board of Selectmen takes no position one way or the other on whether you should vote for or against the debt exclusion,” Deignan said. “We simply want people to be aware of what a ‘yes’ vote means and what a ‘no’ vote means.” The Massachusetts School Building Authority provided authorization for a Project Funding Agreement for the Bristol-Plymouth project in September 2021. The agreement includes reimbursement of 62.25 percent of eligible project costs up to a maximum reimbursement amount of $125, 569, 759 toward construction of a modern Bristol-Plymouth school facility.

Rehoboth Looks to Establish New Health Board
By Joe Siegel Town officials are hoping to establish a new health board. The group will consist of two members with professional experience in medicine and public health, the chairperson of the Board of Health, the chairperson of the Council on Aging Board of Directors, two at large members, and the administrator of Human Services. Non-voting members would be the COA Director, the Public Health Nurse, the Health Agent, and Veterans Officer. Rehoboth Selectmen chairman Skip Vadnais said he felt the new health board was important “in protecting this community and reaching out to the community, not just our elderly but all the people who are disadvantaged.” Rachel Smith, chairperson of the Board of Health, noted “a lack of communication” when the subject was discussed at the October 3 meeting. “Not knowing anything about what’s going on, I found it disturbing,” Smith said. Vadnais told Smith she was invited to the meeting to discuss her responsibilities under Massachusetts General Law. The purpose of the group is to handle any crises which may arise down the road, Vadnais added. “If there’s an emergency, whatever it could be, that we have the structure in place that is going to handle it. We’re not going to get blindsided again.”

By Joe Siegel The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has tested 18 town wells after toxic sludge was dumped on a site on Almeida Road. According to Robert Materne, chairman of the Rehoboth Conservation Commission: “seventeen have PFA and PFO levels that are below the maximum safe limit, and a number of those don’t register any PFAs- PFOs. One well was high, DEP is trying to figure out the source.” The website Environmental Working Group (https://act.ewg.org) notes: “PFAS, the family of compounds including Teflon, is found not only in pots and pans but also in the blood of people around the world, including 99 percent of Americans. PFAS chemicals pollute water, do not break down, and remain in the environment and people for decades. Some scientists call them “forever chemicals.” Approximately 300 truckloads of sewage sludge were dumped by a company called EarthSource last March. Materne told the Reporter that DEP and the Commission have agreed to divide the responsibilities. “They will handle EarthSource, we will oversee the restoration once the material is removed and clear of any POSSIBLE toxins,” Materne noted. “The lab has yet to send the final test results even though DEP paid a considerable amount to expedite the testing. We do not know if there even is a high level of toxins.” The DEP had tested the sludge because of the huge size of the alteration of wetlands, which ended up being seven acres. Two samples were taken. “There are other chemicals outside of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in that sludge and in that area,” Water Commissioner Joseph Nunes said last August. Materne explained DEP has been waiting for comments from the Department of Agriculture since the property was also in the APR program. “Once DEP hears from them and has the lab results, the material should start leaving,” Materne added. “It will take longer for the material to leave than it took to bring in. We don’t want careless removal methods to make the situation worse.” Tish Vadnais, a member of the Water Commission and the Agricultural Commission, complained about a lack of communication at a Board of Selectmen meeting. The two commissions, along with the Planning Board and the Board of Health, attended a special meeting on August 9 with the Board of Selectmen to discuss the dumping of the sludge and the potential impact on groundwater. “We haven’t had an update because every week we’re expecting that answer to come with the test,” Selectman Rob Johnson said. “Once that’s here, then everybody’s going to know everything.” Johnson told Vadnais about the 17 wells which tested negative for PFAS. “That information has not been forwarded to any of the groups that sat here and asked the Conservation Commission to pass that on,” Vadnais said. “We all agreed that we all need to be on the same page and we’re not on any page whatsoever.” “We’ll correct it,” Johnson replied.

Rehoboth Voters Table New Forestry Garage
VICTORIA DORAN
by Joe Siegel Voters at a special town meeting last month opted to delay a vote on a new 2500 square foot garage for the forestry department. The appropriation requested was $290,000. The garage was to have been located between the Old Town Hall on Peck Street and the animal shelter. “It makes the property less valuable,” said former selectman Jim Muri. “It just makes so much more sense to put all those functionalities - the highway department, the building department, and everything else, clustered in one close area so that you can work with one another.” “Building the building is going to have to be done,” said Selectman Robert Johnson, who is the head of the Forestry Department. “Over at town hall, it makes sense right now. There’s fields over there that are used by the town, front fields, back fields, we dump the chips over there, we dump the logs over there,” Johnson explained. “We definitely can’t fit inside the building that is there now (on Anawan St.)” A new $45,000 ambulance for the fire department was approved, along with funding for three part-time facilities management personnel. “That’s really only one part-time facilities person that’s an employee of the town,” said Selectman Michael Deignan. “The other two people are what we call seasonal workers that come in to do extra jobs on a part-time basis as needed.”

Rehoboth Residents Concerned About Speeding
by Joe Siegel Several residents expressed their frustration Monday about motorists speeding on town roads, particularly Homestead Avenue. Police Chief James Trombetta noted there have been 9 accidents on that roadway this year. “We do get a lot of calls, as far as people not stopping for stop signs, four-way intersections, and so forth,” Trombetta said, noting some of the accidents were due to snowy and icy roads. “We can’t slow everybody down, but if you have what I call a ‘nuisance’ driver, that probably lives on Homestead ave,” Trombetta said. “I would encourage anybody, call the police station, give them the information. I am not encouraging people to stand out at their mailbox and just arbitrarily write down license plates and say ‘this car was speeding.’” One resident said the corner of Perryville Road and Homestead was “a deathtrap going forward.” Selectmen Chairman Skip Vadnais, who lives off of Homestead Avenue, suggested possibly reducing the speed limit on some roads.“We can declare that certain roads are not safe at 40 mph,” Vadnais added.

Rehoboth Ramblings by Leslie Patterson
It’s Only Natural young. My wisecracking nephew has a catch phrase for this type of program: “babies eating babies.” Some predators such as eagles will have two chicks engaged in a Darwinian survival of the fittest where the parents give all the food to the strongest one until the weakling dies. Sometimes the survivor will eat his/her sibling if food is in short supply. Yes, this is the way nature works. Yes, the photography is often amazing. I know that but I don’t really want to watch it. I am always rooting for the impala to get away from the lion, even though lions have to eat too. Then there is the problem of snakes. I am severely snake-phobic and can’t even stand to watch one slither across a TV screen. This is a concern when watching programs about the desert. Keep that remote handy for fast-forwarding. The more whimsical nature programs show only the lighter side of animal behavior. I’m thinking of programs such as David Attenborough’s wonderful show about those colorful male birds of paradise in the jungles of New Guinea and their wild and wacky mating dances. People are so fascinated by wild animals on film that they seem to forget that life is not a Disney movie. Videos that are always popular show some hapless (not to mention stupid) tourist being chased and sometimes gored by a bison/buffalo at Yellowstone because they got to close to it. It would seem obvious that this huge powerful horned animal could hurt if not kill you if it wanted to. Regarding the name of this impressive beast, I agree with whoever said that while these animals may actually be bison, it’s just a lot more fun to say buffalo. The only time I’ve been close to possibly dangerous wild animals was at the visitor center at Shark Valley in the Everglades. It’s named for the nearby estuary Shark River because people come there to see alligators up close, not to find sharks. Our tour group FIREWOOD AVAILABLE was just standing on the trail listening to the park ranger as various alligators ambled around nearby, ignoring everyone. Living in a heavily wooded area, it’s possible to see wildlife in your own backyard on a regular basis. Deer are everywhere these days, so it’s really important to drive more carefully on country roads, especially at dawn and dusk. We recently saw a doe with three fawns. I didn’t know that a deer could raise three little beating around the bush! Best prices to fit your budget. ones in one season. But I could do without hearing coyotes off in the distance (may they stay there) and I hope that no black bears make their way to this corner of our state. My favorite real-life nature scene recently was provided by a very assertive squirrel that got into a pumpkin we had left in the yard by a tree. It managed to claw and bite out a rather large hole in the side of the pumpkin and with its head deep inside the pumpkin and tail sticking out, it was busily digging out pumpkin seeds, gorging on some and then “burying” other seeds under some damp leaves. He or she didn’t take lightly to competition from other squirrels either. Watching the great pumpkin caper was lots of fun. Then a lone turkey walked by to check out the scene. Maybe the statue of St. Francis under the tree was attracting References available upon request all the wildlife.
I’ve watched a lot of nature shows over the past couple of years, whether on PBS or a streaming service, and they are all starting to look alike. First it starts with ice melting as winter turns to spring, then we have, naturally, summer, fall, and back to winter. Hibernating animals such as bears have to bulk up in the summer to make it through all those months where they are deeply asleep and living off their body fat. Sometimes during the worst of winter, I think “lucky them.” There are two kinds of nature documentaries, the ultra-realistic and the more whimsical. The first type follows predators on the hunt where they may or may not catch their prey. If they do get a meal, this will be shown in all its gory details. Often, a mother predator (lion, wolf, eagle, etc.) will be shown killing the offspring of her prey (bite-size snacks you might say) to feed to her own

Looking Back… to Old-Fashioned Thanksgivings
By Phyllis Dupere Many of us heard the story about the First Thanksgiving from family members and in the lower grades at school. The Pilgrims and the Native Americans dined together on wild turkey, fish, ducks and geese, venison, corn, onions and chestnuts. Fruits and berries were a tasty dessert. It wasn’t a quick run to the grocery store for this meal to come to fruition. After a successful 1621 growing season, all gathered for a three day “festival” of sorts, knowing that they had a sufficient harvest, large enough to celebrate and still have ample provisions to last through the following spring. It did take a community to prepare the foods. Was it a feast or just a simple meal shared by many thankful people? I think it was a little of each. Moving ahead to 1863, President Abraham Lincoln announced that the first “official” Thanksgiving holiday would be celebrated on Thursday, November 26, 1863. On Thanksgiving Day 1924, Macy’s Christmas Parade (now known as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade) offered marching bands, floats, and animals. Santa was in the last float, symbolically bringing in the Christmas season. The parade has grown in size and its route has been altered slightly since its beginning. Currently, the route is approximately two and one-half miles long, terminating in front of Macy’s flagship department store on 34th Street at Herald Square. Santa, now with a bit more fanfare and confetti, still brings in the Christmas season. Many in the Rehoboth area raised their own chickens and turkeys, having weekly chicken or turkey dinners. Leftovers from that meal were salvaged, bones were put in kettles of water over the fire in the hearth (or in later years on the gas stove) to become chicken (or turkey) stew or soup. Chicken were the more popular fowl, as they were smaller and easier to raise. Wild turkeys were hunted in the fall. During the past few years, large numbers of wild turkeys have once again returned to town and can be seen roosting on roof tops and walking through our yards. As electricity entered homes, preparation and cooking methods changed. Food could be purchased ahead of time and kept cold. No longer was food kept in the “ice box”, it now was kept in the electric refrigerator or freezer. Preparing for the Thanksgiving Day Dinner began with a “To Do” list which got longer by the day. The first and most important thing to do was to call either Warren’s Turkey Farm on Winthrop Street, in the current vicinity Winthrop Commons on Route 44 or Munroe’s Turkey Farm, now Munroe Feed & Grain at 200 Fairview Avenue to order the turkey, if you did not raise your own. The shopping list, groceries and other food items, was rather similar year after year. Household chores included a thorough cleaning of all rooms, washing, starching and ironing the white linen tablecloth, getting the enamel roasting pan and racks out of the closet (it was used twice a year-once for the Thanksgiving and again for the Christmas, which sometimes held a roast in place of a turkey), and putting the two leaves in the dining room table to accommodate the company that was invited to join the family. “Don’t forget to use the “good” dishes and crystal goblets…we’re having company.” How many of us now use aluminum foil pans to cook the turkey in and set the table with a colorful plastic tablecloth and festive paper plates and cups? The Thanksgiving meal itself has always had numerous side dishes with many regional favorites intermingled with cultural and traditional sides. Along with the roast turkey, most families served potatoes, winter squash, stuffing, ang gravy. Times have changed… many turkeys are now cooked outdoors, not on a spit, but in a turkey fryer. Is it stuffing or dressing that is served with your turkey? Varieties of bread stuffing are very popular, yet a New England twist includes oysters in the mix. And don’t forget the cranberry sauce. So many options: canned (jellied or whole), ground, raw cranberries mixed with oranges, lemon and sugar, or cooked, whole cranberries with sugar and spices added. My favorite? A turkey, pork dressing, and butternut squash sandwich, with a dribbling of gravy before the top slice of bread is added. Happy Thanksgiving!

NOVEMBER 26th
November will be a busy month as we will have the State Election, Fall Town meeting, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. I was recently wondering what the origins of Town Meetings were in New England. What I found out was that Massachusetts’s residents began holding Town Meetings over 350 years ago, shortly after the Puritans arFlorice Craig rived from England, seeking liberty. One reason that Massachusetts’s colonists revolted against Great Britain was the British attempt to ban most Town Meetings except by permission. In 1774, British Soldiers tried to stop a Salem Town Meeting in progress, but the citizens barred the door of their town house and continued to meet. LEE On the American Revolution’s first day of fighting, members of the Lexington militia gathered on the town common at around 2:00 in the morning on April 19, 1775. There they held an impromptu open-air Town Meeting to “consult what might be done” about the British soldiers marching from Boston. There is a lot to running a Town meeting, if you are interested in researching it further you can go to the Secretary of State website: www.sec.state.ma.us look under Town meeting and you will find a booklet called “A Citizens Guide to Town Meetings”. This booklet explains all aspects how a town meeting is run in the State of Massachusetts.

Special Town Meeting
On October 24, 2022 the Town held a Special Town Election to see if the Town would appropriate $24 million to fund the construction of a new Public Library. There were over 600 in attendance. The auditorium was full so we had to utilize the gym as an overflow room. The vote was 405 in favor and 207 opposed. The vote did not pass as it needed a 2/3 majority to pass to spark a special ballot question election. I want to thank everyone who came out to vote. I also want to thank the workers behind the scenes, Police, Fire, the folks checking people in, it got a little busy for a while, but everyone maintained and we got through it smoothly.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Our Lady of Mt Carmel church conducted a food drive for the benefit of the food pantries in Seekonk and Rehoboth. The volunteers and clients of the Doorways food pantry wish to thank the parishioners of Our Lady of Mt Carmel church for the generous outpouring of food and cash donations in the recent food drive. Your gifts support many Seekonk residents in need of a helping hand, and the food thus provided will grace the dinner tables of homes throughout Seekonk for weeks to come. We feel that the dignity of our client shoppers is affirmed by their ability to choose the food items that they receive, and these food drives provide them with a choice in the brands and flavors to select from. Your donations are a boon to our mission and a blessing to our neighbors. With inflation raging, the number of households served by Doorways is increasing weekly. Happily, our shoppers continue to be supported in hard times by the generosity of their neighbors. Over seventy families rely on Doorways on a regular basis, and Doorways relies on people like the parishioners of OLMC. Our gratitude is boundless - we are humbled by your support, awed by your generosity, and hopeful for the future. We give thanks for all you do. God bless you all.

Remembering Our Veterans and Military Service Members
The EPVMER2021 committee, again this year, encourages sending a greeting card and/or letter to a veteran or an active service member you know. Or address it “to any veteran” and mail it to your church, or to the Volunteer Office, VA Medical Center, 830 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, RI. 02908. The VA Medical Center welcomes cards (birthday, get well, thinking of you) all year round. Or mail to the RI Veterans Community, 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol, RI 02809. Let them know their military efforts are not forgotten and they are appreciated. Read more about the contributions of many of our veterans and military members on the E. Prov. Military Service Honor Roll. View visual tributes of the honor roll as well as photos and video taken at the E. P. Veterans Memorial Expressway double Re-dedication event held last Nov. 2021. https://sites.google.com/view/epvmer2021 No internet? View it on the computers at the public library. Biographies of the veterans with individual war memorials in E. P. have been written. Last call to reach their families! A new list of relatives is posted. If you recognize a relative’s name, please ask that person to contact epvme @ hotmail. com ASAP to pre-view and edit the bio. This collection will be finalized soon so it can be printed in 2023. Thank you, veterans and military service members, for your service to our country!
Trash Bans & Recycling Info from The Seekonk Recycling Committee
As we head into November, the Seekonk Recycling Committee would like to call attention to a few important updates and happenings. You may be aware that November 15th is America Recycles Day, and we hope to have some new programming on Seekonk channel TV-9. You probably don’t know that as of November 1st, it is now illegal to put clothing/textiles and mattresses in the trash here in Massachusetts. The DPW is working with MEGA on how handling procedures will change as far as disposal of mattresses, and more information will be communicated when we have it confirmed. Please visit the Recycling Information page at www.Seekonk-MA. gov for more information about how to properly dispose or recycle products in Seekonk. As for textiles, there are Bay State Textile collection bins located at the Seekonk DPW building on Taunton Ave/Lake St, Martin & Aitken Elementary Schools, Hurley Middle School and Seekonk High School. These bins can be used for both gently used clothing, shoes and textiles (towels, bedding, etc) that are good enough to be reused, as well as items that are ripped, torn, stained or otherwise too worn out for reuse-but please don’t include anything wet, dirty or moldy. These items not suitable for reuse get recycled into new products such as insulation or packaging. If you’re able to package the worn out items separately and mark them for recycling, it’s appreciated but not required. There are also many organizations in the area that accept clothing and textiles, such as Angels Care Closet, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Savers, Goodwill, and other collection bins such as PlanetAid. These organizations also have procedures in place for sorting out goods that are too worn out for resale, and are supposed to be recycling them.

While you’re sorting things around your home for donation or recycling, instead of paying to put them in your trash, the Recycling Committee would also like to make residents aware that we are collecting hundreds of other common household items that normally end up in the trash, and recycling them with Terracycle. The list is growing, but currently we’re collecting items such as toothbrushes, pens and art supplies, deodorant tubes, air fresheners, razors, baby food packaging, pet food bags, spray and pump tops and so much more. If you’re interested in a full list of accepted items or if you have items to recycle, please send a message to the Recycling Committee on Facebook for more information.

2nd Annual “Celebrate Seekonk Day” a Success On Saturday, October 1st the Seekonk Cultural Council sponsored the second “Celebrate Seekonk Day” held at the Seekonk Public Library. It was a day set aside to celebrate the history, culture, and creativity of Seekonk. The event was free and open to the public with entertainment, talks, and activities to attract all ages and interests. There was a fun and engaging performance by local Grammy Award winner Bill Harley, a spirited Pocanoket Tribe presentation, sample spotlight performances by the Hurley Middle School Band members, a local Seekonk history author talk, shadow puppets for pre-schoolers, creative Kindness Rock painting, fanciful face painting, “Why I Love Seekonk” Wings, The Community Quilt display and more! A popular part of the day, was a diverse popup art gallery featuring two and three-dimensional artwork from the Seekonk Artist Network, and collaborative student work representing all the schools in town. Bill Clark, the chairperson for the Seekonk CulHMS Band Members Face & Rock Painting tural Council stated that, “The success of this day truly showed how the many aspects of our town can pull together for a special event. Seekonk Selectmen Dismayed After Library Vote
By Joe Siegel The Seekonk Board of Selectmen expressed their frustrations following the rejection of a new public library at the October 24 town meeting. The project would have cost a total of $24 million. There were over 600 in attendance at the Seekonk High School auditorium. The vote was 405 in favor and 207 opposed. A twothirds majority was required for passage, but fell three votes short. Every member of the Seekonk Board of Selectmen voted in favor of the project. Town Administrator Shawn Cadime had also voiced his support. Last July, the Library had been awarded a $7.3 million grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners for the construction of a new building. Michael Durkay, chairman of the Library Board of Trustees, said the grant was “provisional”, which meant the voters would have had to approve the grant at a special election to be held before January 9, 2023. Selectman Michael Healy noted the cost of $3 million to perform maintenance on the library at 410 Newman Avenue. “We now know that there’s a building that potentially looks like we’re going to be keeping for a period of time now,” Healy said. “I think we need to start taking some steps in putting some money into that building to get it at least in better shape than it is now.” “It’s a shame that after being there all night, and getting a vote out of 612 people, that three votes shy of all that work that was done, (it could’ve gone to the ballot for a town-wide vote),” said Selectman David Andrade. “It was three votes, right,” said Chairman Justin Sullivan. “I bet those three people that left (the meeting) early wished they had stayed now.” Some members of the board have been blasted on social media for their position on the issue. “Election season is coming,” Healy said. “We read off openings on boards and committees every single week. Please step up. If you have all the answers and think you can do better than any one of us, feel free.”
Seekonk Selectmen Consider Options for Old Town Hall
By Joe Siegel The Seekonk Board of Selectmen is considering what actions to take regarding the Old Town Hall on Taunton Avenue. The building, which had been used for the police department, has been unoccupied for many years. In 2018, Selectmen Old Town Hall designated the task of determining the building’s value to members of the town’s Historical commission and the Community Preservation Committee. John Alves, a member of the Old Town Hall Building Study Committee, said the property could be used by various organizations. Alves also suggested using it as a place for voting instead of Seekonk High School. “This really is the first piece of real Seekonk history that we have,” explained Dave Sullivan, another member of the committee. “To let it go, to tear it down, really would be a shame and would not be honoring our past.”
November 2022 The Reporter The property had been sold to the Seaconke Wampanoags for $55 in 2014. The tribe had intended to convert the building into a cultural and meeting center. Those plans fell through and now the town owns the building again. A total of $100,000 has already been spent from the town’s community preservation fund in order to prepare the building for the historic register. “It’s a beautiful building and it speaks to the history of the town,” Chairman Justin Sullivan said at Wednesday’s meeting. Sullivan noted the town had already invested in other historic properties, such as the Medeiros farm, purchased with CPC funds. “I don’t want to spend any residential tax dollars on renovating (the Old Town Hall),” Sullivan said, adding the town should sell the surplus properties and give the proceeds to the senior citizens to offset their tax payments. Selectman Michael Healy said the town has not done enough to maintain their buildings. He believes the Old Town Hall could serve a purpose, as long as it’s properly maintained. “We really need to do at least the basics to maintain that building so it doesn’t deteriorate any more than (it already has),” Healy added.
New Aitken Principal Sets His Sights High By Joe Siegel
David Graf has been serving as principal of Aitken Elementary School since July 1. Graf started at Aitken in July 2018 as the assistant principal and later served as the interim principal following former principal John Haidemenos’ retirement last January. “It’s really interesting to carve it out and make it my own,” Graf explained. “It’s been great. There’s definitely a lot to the job. There’s more responsibility. You’re in charge of a lot more things. The Aitken staff, the parents, the students, it’s a wonderDavid Graf ful school.” Graf was previously an assistant principal at schools in New Bedford and Bellingham. In addition, he spent approximately seven years working as a guidance counselor in Fall River at the Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School and Edmond Talbot Middle School. Outside of education, Graf has also worked for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families as a social worker. “I found that I really liked working (with children),” Graf said. “One of my first jobs was as a substitute teacher at Bristol Aggie and that point I decided I liked working with students.” Graf attended Rhode Island College for his undergraduate degree and did his graduate work at Boston University and Northeastern University. “Right now I’m taking a lot of professional development workshops to strengthen my knowledge a little bit,” Graf noted. Aitken is featuring two new programs this year. One is ST Math, which has received positive feedback from students. A new literacy program, “My View,” has also begun. “I try to come from the approach of being as supportive as I can,” Graf added. “I want to make sure everyone gets what they need. For me, it’s all about trying to be the best possible support to everyone.”

East Providence Lions Club News
East Providence Lions had their October meeting at Davenports. Guest speaker was Carl Sweeney of Hope & Fait, a nonprofit community organization. Carl was inspired to start this organization by his granddaughter Hailee, who wanted to help others less fortunate in the community with food, clothing, etc. Carl has visited schools to read to children and also provide groceries for them to take home. Carl, was recently inducted in to the EP Hall of Fame for his contributions and dedication of helping others in the community. The EP Lions were very generous in making food donations to support Hope & Faith. If you are interested in making a difference in our community, please contact EP Lions and join us for a meeting.

From the State House Representative Steven S. Howitt Endorses Yes on Question 3
Steven S. Howitt
Initiative supports familyowned small businesses and customer convenience without sacrificing safety
Boston (Oct. 17, 2022) - Rep. Steven Howitt, who represents the 4th Bristol District, has announced his support for the approval of Question 3 on November’s ballot. The question will update Massachusetts’ liquor laws to enhance consumer convenience while protecting small businesses. A yes vote on Question 3 would modernize state laws to allow for the safe expansion of alcohol licenses, allow valid out of state IDs to be relied upon by a retailer of alcohol beverages, and provide best practice fixes to the current system to prevent alcohol sales to minors. “We thank Representative Howitt for voicing his support for Question 3,” said Rob Mellion, of the 21st Century Alcohol Retail Reform Committee. “A yes vote on Question 3 provides for the changes that family-owned alcohol retail stores need to fairly compete with large corporations that are mostly headquartered outside of Massachusetts, while also benefitting adult consumers.”

About Question 3
Question 3 calls for the state to progressively double the number of allowed beer and wine licenses a company or individual is allowed to hold, going from nine to 18. Most states allow three to five full liquor licenses per merchant and MA’s number would be set at seven. This would significantly increase consumer convenience when shopping. Additionally, the ballot question also will allow valid out of state IDs to be relied upon by a retailer of alcohol beverages, as they are allowed in every other state in the country and already are permitted in Massachusetts for the sale of cannabis. Question 3 will appear on the ballot with the title “Changes to Alcohol Retail Licensing Initiative.” For additional information visit: yeson3mass.com.

Arts in the Village Presents Ekstasis Duo Saturday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m
On Saturday, November 12, cellist Natasha Farny and pianist Eliran Avni will appear for the first time in the Arts in the Village Concert Series. Their program, titled “From the Shadows,” will feature the Romantic dreams of Viennese composers Alexander Zemlinsky and his brilliant student, Alma Mahler, the ineluctable pull of George Walker’s voice, the first Black composer to win a Pulitzer Prize for Music, and the delightful night music of Lili Boulanger, a budding young composer who died at age 24, Ekstasis Duo unable to fulfill her talent. The evening will finish with the tour de force quasi-concerto by Henriette Bosmans, a regular soloist with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and late Romantic composer from Amsterdam. Farny and Avni met as students years ago at the Juilliard School. After some exciting performances in New York City and upstate New York, the two decided to embark on a new mission: to create compelling programming that celebrates masterpieces alongside the secret jewels of lesser-known works. With a focus on storytelling that pinpoints an aspect of the human condition or creates an atmosphere through sound, their concerts offer solo and chamber music works, and occasionally incorporate multimedia, readings, video, and visual art. In recent seasons, the duo has promoted the music of less well-known but accomplished composers. Since their debut in 2018, the Ekstasis Duo has appeared on distinguished series such as New York City’s Merkin Hall, Eastman’s Morning Chamber Music Series, and Rochester’s “Live from Hochstein.” During the summer of 2020, the duo recorded music for their debut CD, “Women’s Voices,” now just available. This program inspired Ekstasis to give lectures online and in person, both nationally and at an international conference in Lucca, Italy. A multimedia project involving live music and video occurred in 2021 as a result of winning the Kasling Award of the State University of New York at Fredonia. This concert will take place on Saturday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m., at Goff Memorial Hall, 124 Bay State Road, in Rehoboth, MA 02769. The doors open at 7:00 p.m., first come, first seated. Wheelchair accessible. General admission is $22, $20 for seniors, and $8 for students and children. Payment may be made by cash, credit card, or check (made out to Rehoboth Antiquarian Society). The Agency Paiva Opens in New East Providence Plaza A Ribbon Cutting Event Was Held on September 30th
After 34 years in business, The Agency Paiva has a new home in East Providence. The new plaza that houses The Agency Paiva is located at 501 Warren Avenue. The plaza is a 3,680 square foot building with three units and ample parking. The Agency Paiva will operate out of a 1,600 square foot unit and the remaining space has been combined to accommodate Bling Eyewear, an optometric practice and optical boutique in Cranston that has decided to open a second location. Bling is owned by Paiva’s sister-in-law’s family, making this a real family affair. “It was a dream that came about suddenly,” confessed Joe Paiva. “I came across this property by accident, while I was helping a client friend to look for property. I probably would never have considered it, if it wasn’t for the fact that my sons were working with us. I would probably just be content retiring and going into the sunset at my current location. This makes me feel as though the business is endless and there is no end to it. It’s a good family story.”
Grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at The Paiva Plaza. From left, East Providence Mayor Roberto DaSilva, Nicholas Paiva, Odilia Paiva, Joseph Paiva, and Alex Paiva.
Friends, associates, City Officials, and community members joined the Paivas for the inauguartion ceremony on September 30th. East Providence Mayor Roberto DaSilva cut the ribbon on the new facility along with Paiva, his wife Odilia, his sons Alex and Nicholas and future daughter-in-law Kelsey McNulty. People In The News Seekonk Resident Honored by LeadingAge Massachusetts LeadingAge Massachusetts honored Hebrew SeniorLife’s NewBridge on the Charles Security and EMS Team, including Brian Hutton of Seekonk, with its Outstanding Team Award, presented at the statewide LeadingAge Massachusetts Annual Achievement Awards event earlier this month. The security team is “one of the main reasons that NewBridge on the Brian Hutton Charles is the community that it is”, said Matthew Hollingshead, executive director of NewBridge on the Charles. Their duties include emergency medical services, fire suppression, access control and emergency, but frequently extend to doing whatever it takes to help residents live their best lives. This includes the creation of package and meal delivery programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This team is what makes NewBridge a cruise ship,” said Hollingshead. “Our security team takes services beyond and each individual is treated as the most important person in the community. ‘No’ is not in the team’s vocabulary, and everyone chips in to make it incredible for all.” Kim Brooks, Hebrew SeniorLife’s Chief Operating Officer for Senior Living, and Hollingshead presented the award to the members of the team who attended the event.

Join us for a lively discussion of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty on Tuesday, November 29th at 6:00 PM at Seekonk Public Library. The title is available digitally as an ebook through Libby and audiobook through Hoopla, or you may place a hold and pick up a print copy at the library. New members are always welcome! Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty-a twenty-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre-took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. Thrown into a profession of gallows humor and vivid characters (both living and very dead), Caitlin learned to navigate the secretive culture of those who care for the deceased. Honest and heartfelt, self-deprecating and ironic, Caitlin’s engaging style makes this otherwise taboo topic both approachable and engrossing. Now a licensed mortician with an alternative funeral practice, Caitlin argues that our fear of dying warps our culture and society, and she calls for better ways of dealing with death (and our dead). - from Amazon For more event information, visit www.seekonkpl.org or email library@seekonkpl.org.

History Discussions Resume
Here’s a reminder that Hank Coleman is starting up the history discussion group at the library again, on Wednesday mornings from 11 to 12:15. Hank says “After a twoyear absence, the history discussion group is ready to proceed. Unraveling the story of slavery in America from 1790-1869 has been a challenge. Over the ensuing weeks I will attempt to share the complexities of this growing blight on the early American experience.” These sessions are open to all and a background knowledge of these subjects isn’t necessary. For more information on discussion topics and reading suggestions, contact Hank at hjcoleman@comcast.net. The Blanding Public Library (blandinglibrary.net) is located at 124 Bay State Rd. Phone 508-252-4236. The Blanding is open Monday through Thursday from 10 to 8 and on Friday and Saturday from 10 to 4. Closed Sundays and holidays, including Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. The library will be closing early at 4 p.m. on Wed. Nov. 23 and will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

First Christian Congregational Church’s 15th Annual Veterans Meat Pie Supper
First Christian Congregational Church is once again saluting veterans with our 15th Annual Veterans Meat Pie Supper being held on Friday, November 4th from 4 – 7:00 pm. First Christian Congregational Church, located at 1113 GAR Highway, Swansea, MA is in its 15th year of providing this “Donation Only” supper consisting of a ¼ slice of meat pie, whipped potatoes, veggies, gravy, rolls and dessert. Veteran’s Day is a holiday intended to thank, honor and celebrate all those who served in the military, in war time, as well as in peace time. Acknowledging veterans demonstrates our gratitude for all they do to preserve our freedoms. ALL donations received are converted into food and service gift cards which Kevin Serpa, Swansea Veteran’s Service Officer, distributes throughout the year to Swansea veterans and their families who are truly in need. Due to the Covid pandemic last year we were not able to host an inhouse dinner, but thankfully we were able to present the Swansea Veterans Agent with gift cards and services totaling $11,600.00. The people in our community have always been very generous in support of our veterans. If you are able to “help us help others” at this time, we gratefully will receive your donation which should be forwarded to First Christian Congregational Church, 1113 GAR Highway, Swansea, MA 02777 with “Veterans” in the memo line. Thank you in advance for your support and kindness in this ministry to our veterans. We hope to see you on Friday, November 4th from 4 to 7:00 pm for a sit-down meal.

(Photo courtesy Seekonk Public Schools) Seekonk -- Superintendent Dr. Rich Drolet and Principal Alexis Bouchard are pleased to announce that Seekonk’s Hurley Middle School has been recognized by Special Olympics Massachusetts as an official Special Olympics Massachusetts Unified Champion School. Special Olympics Massachusetts honored Hurley Middle School’s commitment to inclusion by awarding the school with a certificate and banner for its continuous efforts to provide opportunities and activities for all. The school was honored for embodying what it means to be a Unified Champion School through unified sports, inclusive youth leadership programs and whole-school engagement. Back in the 2016-17 school year, Hurley Middle School and Swansea’s Case Jr. High School partnered together to create a Unified Basketball program. Since the program’s inception, it has continued to grow within the Massasoit League under Coach Melissa Skodras’ leadership with approximately six schools participating each season. Last year, Hurley Middle School expanded its programming to include Unified Bowling and Bocce was added to the school’s list of Unified Sports this year. HMS will be hosting its first-ever Unified Bocce meet this fall. This year, Hurley Middle School has also established a Unified Club to participate in various activities, and facilitate inclusive schoolwide events with Ashley Armoush serving as the club’s advisor. In addition to sports and clubs, over the years Hurley Middle School has also held “Warrior Pride Acceptance Days,” a day in which staff and students are encouraged to wear blue in support of inclusion. On this day, morning announcements are also shared related to the importance of inclusion and fostering a welcoming environment for all. “At the Hurley Middle School, our staff and students have been committed to ensuring that no child feels left out, especially those with disabilities, by engaging with one another through activities, sports and more,” Principal Bouchard said. “By building these connections, we have been able to foster and grow an open and inclusive environment that truly welcomes everyone. We are honored to be recognized and we look forward to continuing the work we’ve started.” As part of this recognition, Special Olympics Massachusetts will provide resources and tools to support Hurley’s commitment to inclusivity. The toolkit includes important dates, reminders and fun items to assist staff with beginning the school year as a Unified School Champion.

On October 31st, our kindergarten and preschool students hosted a themed parade around the school. The students and teachers enjoyed seeing our youngest students in their costumes. Teachers also had activities and projects planned for the day. A fun time was had by all!
Beckwith Students Will Display Artwork at the Dighton Arts Festival
The DR Falcon Frankie visited the PRES and BMS Trunk or Treat event at DRRHS on October 22nd. The crisp fall air brought much excitement to Palmer River Elementary School. Teachers and students engaged in fall-themed activities throughout October that spanned all major academic areas. These activities included fall items such as apples, leaves, and pumpkins. Since October was fire safety month, classrooms participated in fire safety activities. Palmer River was fortunate to have firefighter Randy Larivee visit our preschool and kindergarten classrooms. He shared fire safety knowledge tips with preschool and kindergarten students during his visit. Students also enjoyed an up-close fire truck experience. Mrs. DiPalma’s second-grade class held a book dedication ceremony in the library. During the ceremony, students read their first published book to visitors. The ceremony ended with each child taking a picture with Mrs. Kefor, Principal, and Dr. Leandro, Assistant Principal. Mrs. DiPalma’s students then placed their books in the school library for all to enjoy! We are so proud of our young authors! On October 22nd, our PTSA sponsored a Trunk or Treat event. The event featured decorated car trunks, families adorned in creative costumes, and plenty of candy. Our Superintendent, Mr. Runey, and Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Souza, joined in on the fun. Thank you to the PTSA for organizing this family-friendly event. On October 27th, our second-grade students and their families were invited to a Math-or-Treat event. This event consisted of spooky math games, costumes, and treats. It was great to see so many second graders having fun with math.

AP and PSAT Success at Bishop Feehan
More AP Scholars and more National Commended students than ever follow major new support and access initiatives. Attleboro, MA – Academic honors have been pouring into Bishop Feehan High School’s Holcott Drive campus, and Principal Sean Kane is beaming with pride and saluting his students and staff on their accomplishments. Sixty-eight Feehan students – far more than ever recorded before – recently learned of their status as AP Scholars from the College Board. AP Scholars receive an AP score of 3 or higher on three or more Advanced Placement exams. Thirteen Feehan students achieved AP Scholar with Honor status (AP average above 3.25 and a 3 or more on at least four AP exams) and 18 earned the coveted AP Scholar with Distinction level (average of at least 3.5 and a 3 or more on five or more different AP exams). Additionally, nine Feehan seniors recently received Commended Students status in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP). Commended students represent the top 3% of PSAT takers in the country. “It’s been quite a fall for our Feehan scholars,” reports an excited Kane. “We love the honors, of course, but I can’t help but reflect on all the hard work by both our students and our staff that makes all this possible. Our faculty have been actively increasing access to AP courses and growing our SAT prep programs, and our students have responded so well. It’s a great day to be a Shamrock.” As noted by Principal Kane, this most-recent success follows a concerted effort by Feehan academic leaders to expand access to Advanced Placement courses and build in even more PSAT and SAT supports for Feehan students. In fact, the 2021-22 school year saw 242 Feehan students (the most ever) taking at least one AP course and 87% of those students achieving an AP exam score of 3 or higher (considered the passing score). The average AP score at Feehan in 2022 was 3.64. Forty-five percent of Feehan seniors in the Class of 2022 received a score of 3 or better on at least one Advanced Placement exam. Students from our area: Current Class of 2023 AP Scholars seniors: Lydia E. Nassef, Seekonk; Una E. Soliday, Rehoboth The Class of 2022 Feehan AP Scholars: Caitlin J. Brawley, AP Scholar, Rehoboth; Cormac T. Masterson, AP Scholar with Distinction, Rehoboth More information can be found at BishopFeehan.com/ Admissions.

D-R Superintendent Runey on School Security
by Joe Siegel Dighton-Rehoboth Regional Schools Superintendent Bill Runey provided an update on efforts to improve security at the district’s buildings, following the arrest of a man who broke into Palmer River Elementary School last month. Police later identified the suspect as 35 year-old Jacob Hunt of Taunton. He is being charged with breaking and entering into a building in the daytime and destruction of property over $1200. “The resolution by RPD at PRES gives us all some peace of mind,” Runey said Monday. “As for security, we have been working on our safety and security vision since the tragedy in Uvalde, Tx. In just a few months, we have made significant progress in achieving that vision. Our school committee set the tone in July with a special meeting, and this was one of the significant agenda items. We, then, had multiple strategy sessions with police and fire in both towns as well as an independent security consultant. We still have boxes to check, but we have common language in our crisis plans and have dramatically improved communication.” “ Although there is no such thing as absolute safety, we continue to work to achieve our goal to make our schools as safe as possible,” Runey added.

Iconic Holiday Story Plays November 3, 2022 – January 1, 2023 Providence, RI: Trinity Repertory Company returns to live performances with its 46th annual holiday production of A Christmas Carol. Noted for being a new production each year, the 2022 production will be directed by Aileen Wen McGroddy, a recent graduate of the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Program in Directing, and features longtime company member Phyllis Kay as Ebenezer Scrooge. A Christmas Carol runs in the Chace Theater from November 3, 2022 through January 1, 2023 with press opening night on Wednesday, November 9, at 7:30 pm. Tickets start at $27 and are available online at trinityrep.com/carol or by contacting the ticket office at (401) 351-4242. “I am particularly excited to have Aileen at the helm of A Christmas Carol this year,” Trinity Rep Artistic Director Curt Columbus said. “Her work is always filled with music, joy, and wonder, which makes her perfectly suited to deliver a beautiful holiday present to audiences with this story. I’m also beyond thrilled to have Phyllis Kay in the role of Scrooge in our production. Phyllis is one of the great treasures of the Trinity Rep acting company. Her brilliant sense of humor and her incredible heart will make this a Carol for the ages.”
A Long-Standing Tradition
Founding Artistic Director Adrian Hall first added A Christmas Carol to Trinity Rep’s lineup in 1977, just four years after moving into the company’s current home at the Lederer Theater Center on Washington Street. Since then, the production has become a holiday tradition for generations of families in Southern New England. Trinity Rep’s production is set apart from other holiday productions by the fact that it is reimagined every year by a new director, cast, and set of designers in order to be relevant and timely for contemporary audiences. Nearly two million people have seen the show since its inception more than four decades ago.

2022 Holiday Guide Cast And Creative Team
Aileen Wen McGroddy is a Chinese-Irish-American theater director, educator, and producer of live events. Her work is imaginative, inclusive, and playfully experimental, coming from a robust background in physical theatre and a deep commitment to hospitality. She became a person in New York, a theater-maker in Chicago, and graduated with an MFA in Directing from Brown/Trinity Rep in 2022, where she directed the fall 2021 production of The Late Wedding. Aileen is a 2050 Fellow at New York Theatre Workshop and the BOLD Resident Director at Northern Stage. “In this year’s production of A Christmas Carol, I’m exploring what makes people return to this story each holiday season,” Aileen said. Dickens’s London is rife with inequality, plagued by greed, and harshly unforgiving to those struggling to survive. A world like that creates a person like Ebenezer Scrooge, who lives the values that this environment taught her: She moves through the world armored, heart bolted tight with grief and fear. While Scrooge is an extreme case, I think we all protect ourselves from the discomforts and vulnerabilities of living in an unequal society. This story asks us to consider what we might gain if we were to fully open ourselves to the people we share the world with - to meet their needs, to listen to their words, to appreciate their gifts, and to let ourselves be seen.” Aileen will work alongside choreographer Shura Baryshnikov, music director Andrew Smithson, set designer Tatiana Kahvegian, costume designer Camilla Dely, lighting designer Keith Parham, and sound designer Caroline Eng. Phyllis Kay joined Trinity Rep’s resident artistic company in 1991 and has appeared in 13 other productions of A Christmas Carol in an assortment of roles. This year’s production will be her first time portraying Scrooge. This is also the first time since 2003 that a woman has been cast in the role at Trinity Rep. Joining Phyllis on stage are fellow company members Angela Brazil and Rachael Warren; Brown/Trinity Rep MFA students Michael Hisamoto ‘23, Claire Koenig ‘23, Jenny Nguyen Nelson ‘23, and Luis Ra Rivera ‘23; Brown/Trinity Rep alumni Jihan Haddad ‘22 and Gunnar Manchester ‘22; and guest performers Jeff Ararat, Jenna Cyber Monday Lea Scott, and Dereks Thomas. The production will also feature Specials Coming a children’s cast comprised of 12 young local actors including: Jianni Amaral (Cranston, RI), Eleanor Brown-Araujo (Cranston, RI), Soon! Malik Cross (Providence, RI), Deyehla Debrito-Zuendoki (Attleboro, MA), Charlotte Hall (Easton, MA), Emily Mallon (Seekonk, MA), Samuel Memery (Cranston, RI), Cameron Miller (Pawcatuck, CT), Kiera Nagle (Pawtucket, RI), Owen Richard (Ledyard, CT), Victoria Ruiz (Cranston, RI), and Giselle Vides (Providence, RI).
