Anawan School Notes

100% Coverage! For Advertising Information and Rates... Call 508-252-6575

The BOS recently voted to demolish the Anawan School. Did anyone think that the Town could sell a brick or more those who would like a memento of the school? The School Comm did NOT do the town of Rehoboth any favors when they returned the Anawan School to the Town. The SC could NOT get any money from Boston to do any repairs or remodeling of the school. I was a Selectman at the time and we had an Architect and municipal building contractors look at the building. The unanimous opinion of these people was that it would be less expensive to build a new building than trying to rehab the school. My wife worked in the cafeteria at the time and remembers the toilets in the basement overflowing. The building is NOT on any historical register and should not be considered a historical bldg.. Various Boards of Selectmen agreed that it was not wise to spend money on a building that was condemned. I hope that the above facts clear up any misconceptions about the fate of the Anawan School. Follow Up #2 My Next Chapter

Hi again folks! As I mentioned in my first follow-up to the “MEMO”, I have finally retired! I also said “stay tuned”. It seems I may not have fully and finally retired after all. Shortly after making my intentions to retire known, I was approached by a friend who asked if he could present a proposal to me that just seemed to happen at the right time. This friend is a partner in a very busy entity and he and his partner had been discussing hiring someone to help with the phones while they were with clients. They knew I had been in customer service for years and had already tendered my notice to retire and were wondering if I would be interested. Let me say up front, my answer was “tell me more”. The offer would be working from home, a set amount of hours weekly, a suitable wage offer, a computer and a phone supplied by the partners and when I gave it some serious thought, it suddenly hit me – I would be on the very outskirts of possibly helping someone to get to the place they needed to be. That led me to some very profound food for thought. I mean, who wouldn’t consider something like this happening out of the blue? Although I had retired because I decided it was time, I had to also give serious thought to giving up that weekly paycheck along with the benefits I was used to. And, let me be honest here, I tried it once before and it just didn’t work. I had to wonder what I would do with my time if, in fact, I was bored out of my mind. I couldn’t expect to sit under blue skies all year, surrounded by gardens and birdsong, could I? And I wasn’t interested in taking up crafts or baking cakes again. I did all that when the kids were younger. I thought long and hard (maybe a minute or two) but this offer, this blessing, was coming from licensed therapists who were in high demand and did not want to turn anyone away if there was a call for help. And the notion hit me like a brick – I could be the one fortunate enough to be the conduit in getting someone heading in the right direction. It was the furthest away anyone could be by just answering a phone call. It was the bottom step, the first one someone takes when they need to climb a flight of stairs to get where they should and need to be. It was simply answering a phone call but the thought of it made me feel like I could be doing something good and valuable and helpful, while also “paying it forward”. Isn’t that what a part of life is as we live it? Ultimately, as you may have surmised, I accepted the offer of “intake coordinator” and will be training and starting soon. And I am so looking forward to it. Remember when I said “good things happen when you least expect them”? I know I have been rambling along and maybe wasting the time you took to read this and if so, I apologize. If not – who knows? I may come back with more. In the meantime, thank you for letting me share the next chapter in my Book of Life with you. Take care, be happy, love life. Paula M. Boudreau

Regarding Vaccine Mandates

Ok, so I admittedly don’t watch the news much, but I know from other people that COVID vaccinations are/will be mandatory for healthcare and EMS workers, among others. I personally have been vaccinated recently, but originally I was planning on not getting it, even though I am a firefighter. I chose to get it because I wouldn’t be able to attend certain functions that were important to me. That was my choice, not a mandate, and I wasn’t forced into it. If venues or restaurants want to choose to not let unvaccinated patrons in, then that is their choice as a private establishment. Just my opinion. What I cannot fathom is the vaccination mandate for first responders and healthcare workers. I have a good friend who’s an experienced and active EMT in another town that has been told to get vaccinated or he’ll lose his job. I can understand completely why some people don’t want to get it; it’s not tested long term and it doesn’t even seem to be reliably effective at this point. Yes many people have died from COVID, but also many Continued on page 8...

Hello All ~ I hope you are enjoying the beautiful Fall weather in Rehoboth! Speaking of the Fall, I would like to remind all town residents that Town Offices will be closed on Monday, October 11th for Columbus Day. Also, Monday, November 1st quarterly real estate taxes are due. Final reminder, as the Board of Selectmen previously voted, the Rehoboth Fall Town Meeting has been postponed to May 2022.

Remembering a Sad Day with a Very Happy & Special Occasion

As you all remember, a year ago, Saturday, September 12, 2020 the COA Senior Center caught fire. Happily, the Board of Selectmen, Community Preservation Commission and Town Meeting approved the purchase of Francis Farm, which will allow the reopening of the COA Senior Center in the very near future. On the one-year Anniversary of the COA fire, the Board of Selectmen and Town Clerk decided to honor a very special senior, Gertrude “Gert” Lemieux Messier, as Rehoboth’s Oldest Citizen by awarding Gert the 1909 Rehoboth Boston Post Cane. Prior to the Boston Post Cane ceremony, the town took a moment to recognize and thank the Command Staff and Members of the Rehoboth Fire Department; not only for being at the Boston Post Cane ceremony and flying the flag of our Country so beautifully, but for what they do every day to protect our Town. Their bravery and commitment was on full display, one year ago September 12, 2020, when the Council on Aging building caught fire. Had it not been for the quick response, professionalism and determination of Rehoboth’s Firefighters, the devastating fire would have been much worse. Their actions kept the fire from spreading to the other structures and fields that surrounded the building. And, most importantly, no firefighters or civilians were injured combatting the

October 2021 The Reporter fire. At Gert’s Boston Post Cane ceremony, we MADE A CHOICE. We chose POSITIVITY and RESILIENCE. We CHOSE to celebrate the PEOPLE, like Gert, who make our Town special; rather than mourn the loss of a building. Therefore, the reason we scheduled Gert’s Boston Post Cane ceremony on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at the Redway Plain Veteran’s Memorial Gazebo. Where 100+ of Gert’s family and friends along with numerous Town, County, State dignitaries gathered to honor Gert and recognize how special “Our Gert” has been to the Town and Residents over her 99+ years.

The Boston Post Cane tradition began on August 2, 1909 when Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post, forwarded to the Board of Selectmen of 700 New England towns a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest MALE citizen of the town, to be used by him as long as he lives, and at his death handed down to the next oldest male citizen of the town. In 1930, after considerable controversy, eligibility for the cane was opened to WOMEN as well. The cane would belong to the town and not the man/ woman who received it. The canes were all made by J.F. Fradley and Co., a New York manufacturer, from ebony wood shipped from Africa. The cane had a 14-carat gold head and a ferruled tip. The head was engraved with the inscription, — PRESENTED BY THE BOSTON POST TO THE OLDEST CITIZEN OF (NAME OF TOWN) — “TO BE TRANSMITTED”. The Board of Selectmen and/or Town Clerk were to be the trustee of the cane and keep it always in the hands of

the oldest citizen. As years went by some of the canes were lost, stolen, taken out of town and not returned to the Selectmen/Town Clerk or destroyed by accident. To date, only 517 of the original 700 canes have survived.

History of the Boston Post Cane in Rehoboth

Rehoboth’s Boston Post Cane was regularly presented until 2001 before going missing in 2005. The cane was rediscovered in 2015 in a storage area at the Senior Center and given to the Selectmen’s Office. The original cane is now in the possession of the Town Clerk and safely secured in the Town vault. For a number of reasons it was decided to make a replica cane and preserve the original. (The plan is for the original cane to be displayed in a protective case along with brass plates memorializing the Boston Cane recipients since 1909 in the new Town Hall Building.) Once the replica cane was received, the gold cap needed to be hand engraved with our town and state. This was not an easy task, as engraving is becoming a lost art. Arthur Stentiford of the Cameo Shop in Norton came through to save the day by hand delivering the cane to Boston, waiting for it to be engraved and returning it to the Rehoboth Town Clerk’s Office the same day. On July 25, 2016, Francelina Veader was presented the cane. Francelina was 102-years young when she was presented the cane and treasured it for several years. Francelina’s son, Alfred, made a stand for the cane to rest in and upon the passing of his mother, Alfred donated the stand to the Town to be presented with the cane. The replica cane was purchased by the Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club along with a lapel pin depicting the Boston Post Cane. When the cane recipient no longer needs the cane, or moves out of town, the Rehoboth Boston Post cane is returned to the Town Clerk’s Office; and the lapel pin is considered a gift from the Senior Citizens Club to the recipient and recipient’s family. Our tradition continued on September 12, 2021 with the Presentation of the Boston Post Cane being presented to Gert Messier.

cowboy boots . . . she looked absolutely beautiful! Our beloved Gert is an amazing woman – 99 (almost 100) years young and has as much energy as the energizer bunny! Gert enjoys playing the piano, sewing, quilting and visiting with friends and family. Before the Pandemic, Linda Greaves and I would pick Gert up for her quarterly lunch at Rehoboth Town Offices so she could visit with her friends at Town Hall and we look forward to doing that again in the very near future . . . once we get this pandemic behind us. Gert was born in Quebec Canada in 1922, she married Alfred Messier in 1950 and enjoyed 31 years of marriage until his passing. Gert had two children – Louise and Alan, four Grandchildren and six Great Grandchildren. Gert worked at the North Rehoboth School for 23 years where each school day she made delicious lunches, from scratch, for the teachers and students until the school closed in 1981. In 1986 Gert moved on to volunteering at Rehoboth’s first Senior Center located on the corner of Perryville Road and Route 118 until she retired in 1994. When Gert began work at the COA, she started “Gert’s Café” (a weekly lunch for seniors) and prepared Meals on Wheels for delivery to homebound seniors. In 2002, when the new Senior Center opened on Bay State Road, Gert started up her “Gert’s Café” again. Gert was instrumental in serving our Seniors delicious meals until March of 2020 when the COA was forced to close due to the pandemic. Gert was also the COA’s “Sunshine Lady” and would send personalized greeting cards to any senior in town who had an upcoming birthday, was experiencing an illness and other occasion. Now that the COA is closed due to the 9-12-2020 fire, Gert continues to keep busy by providing quilting instruction to Rehoboth residents. We look forward to the new Senior Center reopening soon so Gert and her senior friends can once again enjoy each other’s company.. 2021 Dog Licenses

Frazao Insurance

As of this writing, in 2021 the Clerk’s Office has registered 2,090 dogs and still has 94 dogs that have not been licensed in Rehoboth. As per State Regulations, the Animal Control Officer is required to impose fines on dog owners for those dogs who have not been registered. As a result, non-criminal citations were sent to delinquent dog owners with an additional $25 late fee being imposed on top of the previous $15 late fee. Prompt payment now will avoid any additional late fees. If you are realizing a hardship due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, please contact either the Animal Control Officer or the Town Clerk’s Office so accommodations can be made. As a reminder, if you are one of the 58 dog owners who received reminder postcards, letters and now non-criminal citations, please pay as soon as possible via mail, stopping by town hall to drop off your payment and valid rabies certificate in the “drop box” outside of town hall, or by paying online at: https://www.invoicecloud.com/rehobothgovsvcs Please let us know if your dog is ill and can’t receive a rabies shot, has passed away or moved, we will not know unless you notify the clerk’s office 508-252-6502 x-3109, 3112 or x-3110 ~ thank you. Marriage Intentions/ Marriage Certificates

October is one of our busiest months for Marriage Intentions/ Certificates in Rehoboth. Therefore, as a quick reminder of the process. Both parties must come to Town Hall and complete a three-part packet (Marriage Intention, Marriage Supplement, and

Marriage Worksheet). We ask, if possible please make an appointment prior to coming to Town Hall (508-252-6502 – X3109 or X3112). If you are not married within that timeframe, you must complete the process again. The charge is $20 for the Marriage Intention and $10 for the Marriage Certificate. Note: If you are using an officiant from another state (Rhode Island for example), your officiant must obtain a one-day solemnization certificate from the Secretary of State’s office prior to your wedding day. Sad News

On September 16, 2021 we lost a very dear gentleman in the Town of Rehoboth, Edward John Bliss, Sr. Ed will truly be missed! Serving the Town of Rehoboth in many appointed and elected roles (Selectman, School Committee, Planning Board, Recreation Committee, Election Worker and Firefighter), Ed and his wife Mel were always involved in serving the Town of Rehoboth until Mel’s passing in December of 2017. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with both Ed and Mel Bliss for many years as Town Clerk. Mel served as our Warden of Precinct One until her passing and Ed served until his passing as our Check-Out Inspector for Precinct One. When I first moved to Rehoboth Ed and Mel Bliss were the face of Town Meeting along with Millie Hatten. It wasn’t a Town Meeting unless Ed, Mel and Millie were there to check you in. I will miss them all. I know both Mel and Ed are now happy to be together again in a better place; however, we will all miss them dearly. My sincere condolences to the Bliss family and friends for your loss. Both Ed and Mel were truly giving public servants and an absolute joy to work with. We will miss them both. Prayers are with the family and friends of Ed Bliss during this difficult time. (See full obituary on page 65.) In closing, please stay healthy and safe and have a wonderful October. Lynn, Odete and I wish you all a safe and healthy Columbus Day and Halloween! Happy “employment anniversary” Lynn Shaker ~ 16 years with the Town of Rehoboth as Assistant Town Clerk! Thank you for your dedication to the town and residents of Rehoboth, we hope you had a wonderful trip to Hawaii this October. We look forward to working with you for many years to come. We wish you all a wonderful October. I look forward to chatting with you in November. Please stay healthy and safe. Sincerely, Laura

Selectmen Vote to Demolish Anawan School

By Joe Siegel The Rehoboth Board of Selectmen voted to demolish the Anawan School. Selectman Michael Deignan explained the board had given the Community Preservation Committee and the Historical Commission a period of six weeks to present a plan on how they were going to save the building. Deignan said since no plan had been presented, the board had to follow the instructions of William McDonough, the town’s Building Commissioner, who said the building at 53 Bay State Road was “unsafe” and ordered it to be demolished within 90 days. CPC Chair Carol Williams had hired a structural engineer to inspect the facility. “He said (the building) has a 25 to 50 year usefulness if it were taken care of,” Williams told the Reporter last month. “In the meantime, it’s just deteriorating further. We can’t do anything, we can’t put a roof on, we can’t do anything because (selectmen) don’t want it done.” Williams was hospitalized recently and did not appear before the board as scheduled on September 6. McDonough, Fire Chief Frank Barresi, and Health Agent Karl Drown conducted an inspection of the building on June 3. McDonough reported 90 percent of the ceilings had collapsed and all of the hardwood floors were “completely buckled and rotted.” The building was also impacted by extensive water damage. McDonough spotted “multiple holes on the roof” and multiple broken windows.

Rehoboth Selectmen Approve Redistricting Plan

By Joe Siegel Rehoboth is in the process of redistricting due to a growing town population. The United States Census is taken every 10 years, which mandates changes to voting precincts based on population. The Board of Selectmen Monday approved the plan presented by Town Clerk Laura Schwall.

October 2021 The Reporter According to the 2020 census, Rehoboth had a population of 12, 502. In 2010, that figure was 11, 608 – an increase of 7.7 percent. During the same period, Seekonk had an even bigger population boom. In 2010, the town had 13, 722 residents. In 2020, the population was 15, 531 – a whopping 13.1 percent increase. Schwall said the town can only have a maximum of 4000 people in each voting precinct. The boundary lines have been redrawn with input from the Planning Board and the Board of Assessors. As a result, there will be four voting precincts instead of three. “Each precinct that we had were over 4000,” Schwall explained. “We definitely had to move forward to four precincts. The plan will remain in place for 10 years. It will not be changed until a new census happens and the figures are collected and presented as official.” The deadline for the plan to be submitted to the state is October 31. Selectmen also met with the IT Committee about the implementation of a social media policy for town employees. The committee will have greater oversight over various town departments and the content which is posted online. Selectman George Solas is collaborating with the committee on the policies and procedures

Selectmen Expand Two Town Positions

By Joe Siegel Due in part to a growing population, the Board of Selectmen voted to expand the roles of the Veterans Service Officer and the Town Nurse. Jake Kramer will now serve as Director of Veterans Services on a full-time basis until June 2024. “The veterans were disproportionately affected by the pandemic,” Selectman Michael Deignan said. “Especially in regards to medical care, mental health, and in some cases, increased food insecurity.” Expanding Kramer’s position will help to “mitigate” some of those problems.

Jaime Conlon’s position will also be expanded. Conlon will now serve as Public Health Nurse through June 2024. Kramer and Conlon will be working out of the Department of Human Services building at Francis Farm. The town bought the property in June. It will also serve as the new home for the Council on Aging. The former senior center at 55 Bay State Road was destroyed by fire last September. “The Public Health Nurse is an integral part of that new facility,” Deignan noted. “We’re putting in a clinic there for her with various medical supplies that she needs to service the public. We’re going to have posted office hours for her over there as well. (Conlon) is a valued employee here at the town and she’s a great fit for this new job.” “It appears we’ve hit a tipping point in town where we’ve grown to the point where we have to give full-time services and more services to our population,” said Selectman Dave Perry. “These are going to be expenses going forward.” Chairman Skip Vadnais pledged to be creative in finding the funds for the expanded positions. “We step out of the box whenever we can. That’s how you got the Council on Aging situation, that’s how we got the campus at Francis Farm, that’s how we got the Police Department building and that’s how we got the Town Hall building without increasing and relying on property tax to do it.”

Rehoboth Selectmen Mull Dual Tax Rate

By Joe Siegel The Board of Selectmen could choose to implement a separate tax rate for residents and businesses. Rehoboth has had a single tax rate for all property owners. A classification hearing will be held at the board’s October 12 meeting. According to the Board of Assessors, Rehoboth’s Real Estate and Personal Property Tax Rate for FY 2021 is $13.24 per thousand. continued on next page...

“We should have the discussion,” Selectman Michael Deignan said Monday. “We should see what the numbers are. The residents in this town saw a Proposition 2 and a half increase which added substantially to their tax bill.” Deignan said the tax increase wouldn’t have been as high if there had been a shift in the tax rate to apply to commercial and industrial properties. Selectmen chairman Skip Vadnais expressed doubts about making a switch: “We’re definitely not going to agree on what (the change in tax rates) is going to do.” Selectman George Solas was concerned about the impact on farms in town. “If there’s a higher tax for the farmers, then land gets sold and then we don’t have that farm anymore and we have houses again. We’re not a typical town where there are any substantial businesses. The business here is farms.” Deignan told Solas a dual tax rate would not make much of a difference: “Land is too valuable and people are going to sell the land anyway.”

Rehoboth Files Lawsuit Against D-R

by Joe Siegel The town of Rehoboth, through its governing body, the Board of Selectmen, filed a seven count civil lawsuit in the Superior Court of Massachusetts against the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District, its’ School Committee, and “other potentially responsible persons and entities that remain unnamed at this time,” according to a press release issued by the Town Administrator’s office. The lawsuit alleges the Regional School District and School Committee violated the terms of its’ regional agreement with the Town by undertaking and funding capital projects without the approval of Town Meeting, committed fraud. and breached its’ fiduciary obligations owed to the citizens and taxpayers of Rehoboth. The lawsuit centers on two capital projects costing $15 million which had resulted in the purchase and installation of solar arrays and heating and air conditioning in and on the grounds of various schools operated by the district. These projects were approved by the School Committee and, in direct violation of the Regional Agreeement and State Law, were funded as part of the Regional School District’s operating budgets without Town Meeting approval. Because the capital expenses were incorporated into the District’s operating budget instead of being apportioned to both towns as stated in the Regional Agreement and the Massachusetts General Laws, the town of Rehoboth has been unknowingly paying for a portion of the costs for capital projects located in Dighton’s elementary and middle schools since 2016-2017. As a remedy, the suit seeks to dissolve the Regional Agreement, as well as all damages provable at trial. “As with all legal matters pertaining to the regional school district, the complaint will be referred to council to provide detailed responses by way of

an answer that will be filed in court,” Dighton-Rehoboth Superintendent Anthony Azar said Tuesday. “Based on an initial review of the lengthy complaint, we expect that the majority of allegations on which these claims are based will be refuted.” Rehoboth Selectmen Chairman Skip Vadnais declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Town Meetings Might Be Abandoned

By Joe Siegel Town Moderator William Cute warned the Board of Selectmen about the challenges of having future town meetings during the coronavirus pandemic. “As long as the issue of Covid is with us, we’ve got some very very difficult road to hoe,” Cute said. Last month, the Board cancelled the Fall Town Meeting, which had been scheduled for Saturday, November 13 at Francis Farm. The town had arranged to use three buildings and a tent to accommodate up to 700 residents due to Covid-19 social distancing requirements. Selectman Michael Deignan had explained the cost to the town would be in excess of $100,000. That includes the tent rental, the heaters for the tent, the audiovisual connections, and the police details required to maintain the site. One of the issues to have been decided was the de-regionalization of the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District. “I know that the K through 8 people are probably frustrated about this,” Cute said. “I’m frustrated about it.” Cute suggested the town conduct an evaluation of “different options of governance that might be able for us to get our work done even in the age of Covid without the handicaps we’re dealing with now.” One possibility mentioned would be a switch to an RTM (representative town meeting). Selectmen Chairman Skip Vadnais said the residents would be “reluctant” to abandon the traditional town meeting format which allows them to have a voice in town government. “To take that away from them would be my last option,” Vadnais added. “Let’s see what happens because we definitely have to have a (town) meeting in May.”

New Town Hall Set to Open October 31

by Joe Siegel The new Town Hall will be opening at 340 Anawan Street on October 31, the Board of Selectmen announced. Chairman Skip Vadnais noted only certain portions of the building will be available to the public. The town clerk’s office and the tax collector office were determined to be the “highest traffic” areas in the building, so those departments will be in service. Former selectman Michael Costello, who is serving as the town’s Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, provided the board with an overview of the various building projects, including the renovations at Francis Farm. Vadnais said work there should be completed in two weeks. Francis Hall will be used for the Council on Aging and the “white building” will serve as the home for the town nurse and Veterans Service Officer. The COA staff have been working out of offices on Winthrop Street following a devastating fire in 2020 at the former facility at 55 Bay State Road. The 7200 square foot building was a total loss and the insurance proceeds are being used to purchase materials and equipment for the new COA. Selectman Jim Muri told COA Director Linda Sherman and members of the COA board in July that the town has “limited resources to make modifications” to the buildings at Francis Farm. Muri noted there were code requirements and zoning requirements which had to be met. In addition, there was an evaluation and upgrade of the kitchen in the main building. Painting and “patch work” on the walls had to be completed, as well as the replacement of ceiling tiles. Voters at the May town meeting approved the purchase of the 47 acre property at a cost of $2.8 million. The land and building at 340 Anawan Street was purchased for $995,000.

Doorways Food Pantry Plans to Expand Shopping Days

Doorways Food Pantry is hoping to expand the number of days they are open for food shopping to pre-pandemic levels. “Doorways always operated as a weekly food supplement for our neighbors” said Paul Hodge of Doorways. “When Covid hit, and our food supply was reduced, we switched for food shopping twice a month. Since then, our goal has been to return to a weekly shopping format. We’re almost there.” “The food supply issue is still a little shaky” said Diane Fox, who is in charge of purchasing at the food pantry. “We still are getting less food from the Boston Food Bank, but the community has been very supportive with donations of both food and cash, so we feel good going forward that we will be okay. It’s a leap of faith.”

Town Administrator Gets High Marks

By Joe Siegel Seekonk Town Administrator Shawn Cadime has received a favorable job evaluation from the Board of Selectmen. The review and evaluation were based on the goals and objectives developed jointly by the board and Cadime. “You work tirelessly, not just for yourself, but for the town,” Chairman Justin Sullivan told Cadime at the board’s September 15 meeting. Cadime thanked the board for their support, noting his accomplishments in the past year was a “team effort.” “If I didn’t have the right people in the right places, it wouldn’t be successful,” Cadime said. Cadime’s goals for the next year include working on an overhaul of the town employee handbook, providing department heads with professional trainings, and securing state and federal grants. Sullivan instructed Cadime to focus on economic development in an effort to make Seekonk more business friendly. “We need to address this because we have a number of issues,” Sullivan said. We can’t rely on retail (for economic growth). That real estate is going to have to turn over.” In September 2019, Cadime signed a new three-year contract with the town. Cadime will continue in the position through July 31, 2022. Cadime’s salary was increased to $180, 766 on August 1. Cadime has served as town administrator since 2014. He is also a member of the Fall River City Council. The selectmen will also be performing some extra duties. Sullivan and Selectman Adam Petronio will serve on the Conservation Commission on a temporary basis until volunteers come forward to fill the open seats. In addition, Selectman Michael Healy will serve as an alternate member on the Zoning Board of Appeals on a temporary basis.

The Art Instructor at Aitken Elementary School, Ms. Glum, conceived and carried out this creative mosaic of the town seal with many talented Aitken students participating. Seekonk Cultural Council member Deborah Baldizar encouraged a project that represented the themes of history, culture, and creativity for the upcoming Celebrate Seekonk Day. The art teacher challenged her students to put crayon to paper to assemble a piece of artwork that represented both the town, and the strength of building community by working together for a common goal. Each student colored a separate tile piece and then they were assembled to produce the final piece. The 4’ x 4’ mosaic was part of the community gallery at the Seekonk Celebration Day held at the Seekonk Public Library in September. Arrangements are being made for the finished piece to be displayed in a public building in town for residents to appreciate in person.

Honoring Indigenous Veterans

By Joe Siegel The sacrifices made by indigenous people in wartime have been overlooked for too long, say advocates from the Native American tribes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Charles Smith, Jr., a member of the Seaconke Wampanoags, has launched a fundraising drive to build an intratribal monument at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. “I was allotted the land two years ago,” said Smith, who works at the cemetery and whose father is buried there. In his research of the graves, Smith found at least 115 people from 9 different tribes including Narragansett, Nipmuc, Shinnecock, Manissean, Wampanoag, Osage, Pequot, and Pokeanoket. Smith started a group called Honoring Indigenous Veterans of Turtle Island. So far, $14,000 has been raised for the project. Smith’s father fought in World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam. Smith’s great grandfather was a member of the Narragansett tribe and fought in the Revolutionary War. Smith’s ancestors fought in multiple conflicts going all the way back to King Philip’s War. The monument will feature the tribal names along with an image of a turtle, which holds great significance for Native Americans. Smith said there will be an archway and cobblestone benches. “We want people who don’t realize that indigenous people have been serving this country since its inception,” said Loren Spears, the Executive Director of the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter. The museum serves to educate the public and promote thoughtful dialogue about indigenous history, culture, arts, and Mother Earth and connect to Native issues of today. The Indigenous Veterans monument is being supported by the museum staff and donors. Spears said the Earth is known as “Turtle Island” among indigenous people of the Northeast. The turtle also signifies the calendar. “There’s 13 squares on a turtle’s back which represents the 13 moons of the year and that represents our 13 Thanksgivings,” Spears explained. This project is very personal for Smith, who believes it is his destiny to see it come to fruition. “It’s kind of like towards my spirit to get this done, like a visionary dream I had,” Smith added. “It’s very touching to me.” For more information, visit www.honoringindigenousvets.org.

History Moment

The Rehoboth Congregational Church (RCC) and the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society(RAS) have been Intertwined for almost 140 years. The Reverend George Tilton of RCC founded the RAC in 1884 to preserve Rehoboth history. Goff Memorial Hall was originally built in 1886 for the RAS. It was rebuilt in 1911 after it was destroyed by a bolt of lightning. We have used it for Sunday School, Fellowship, Christmas Bazaar, Concerts, etc. For a period RCC had title to Goff Hall. In 1951 RAS went inactive and transferred the building for $1.00. When we built our Parish House at the Church and the RAS was active again, we transferred it back to them for $1.00. We are very grateful for our relationship with the RAS and expect it to continue during our next 300 years.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT Inexpensive Home Maintenance Projects To Do This Weekend

(BPT) - Home maintenance. The very words might evoke thoughts of an entire weekend spent laboring at home instead of relaxing in it, but that doesn't always have to be the case. "Not every home maintenance project has to be a large undertaking or one that takes up all of your free time," said Christopher O'Rourke, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. "There are small weekend projects that can save you time, worry and money in the long run." Here are six home maintenance projects you can do this weekend that will save you the headache of costly repairs later on.

Clean Refrigerator Coils

To keep your refrigerator properly working, it's best to clean the coolant coils every six months. Coolant coils, which can be located on the back or bottom of the refrigerator, keep warm air out. When the coils are covered with dust, dirt or hair they aren't able to release heat efficiently. In turn, the coils work harder and longer, using more energy and shortening the life of the appliance. This might end up costing you more in the form of a higher energy bill or purchase of a new refrigerator. continued on next page...

Clean your refrigerator coils with a vacuum and coil cleaning brush. Coil cleaning brushes can be found at appliance stores or online for $10 or less.

Check Caulking

Caulking is customary around wet areas like bathtubs and sinks to keep water from seeping into the wall, but it is also used around windows and doors to prevent air from escaping. Check for significant air temperature differences near windows and walls and use a digital thermometer to verify air leaks. Make sure to also check areas where vents and plumbing fixtures meet the outside wall. Old caulking can dry out and crack, making it vulnerable to air and water leaks. If you notice dry or cracked caulking, remove as much of it as possible and reseal. Caulking gun sets that include the sealant, scraping and smoothing tool can begin at $35 and be found online or at your local hardware store.

IMPROVEMENT Examine the Roof

The first step of roof inspection is to check the inside of your home. Look for damp spots or water stains on the ceiling or for cracked plaster along the wall. These can be signs of water damage. At ground level do a visual examination of your roof's exterior for any cracked or missing shingles. Notice if you have to trim back tree branches that may make contact as they can damage your roof's exterior. If you suspect any type of damage, contact an experienced roofer who can perform a thorough inspection.

Clean the Gutters

Gutters are necessary to direct water away from your home's foundation. Their exposure to the elements means that they need to be cleaned and inspected regularly. While cleaning out dirt and leaves, make sure the gutters are securely attached to your house. The weight of heavy snowfall, rain and dirt can cause gutters to loosen and pull away from the home. "Gutters that are free of dirt and debris will keep rain from running down the sides of your home and coming in through the foundation," said O'Rourke. "Routine maintenance means lower homeowner costs by addressing small issues before they become problematic."

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are both a money and energy saver. They allow you to set a comfortable temperature when you're home and can be scheduled to lower the temperature while you're away, helping you save money by cutting down energy usage. "Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to set the heating and cooling of their home to their schedule," said O'Rourke. "It's one less thing for homeowners to worry about and they are fairly easy to install." Your home is not only your sanctuary, it's your commitment. Assessing your homeowners' coverage and understanding your policy is a simple household task you can accomplish this weekend and one that can save you money.

Harmony Heritage Resumes In-Person Rehearsals

Harmony Heritage women’s a cappella chorus has resumed in-person rehearsals 7:00 PM – 9:00 pm on Tuesdays at a new location at Murray Unitarian Universalist Church in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Harmony Heritage chorus is an award-winning chapter of Harmony, Inc. and performs under the direction of Bob O’Connell, an accomplished director, performer, arranger and musician. Harmony Heritage primarily sings in the barbershop harmony style, which traces its musical roots back to the turn of the 20th century. Today, barbershop harmony singers not only celebrate the classics, but also put their own spin on contemporary songs as well. If you would like more information about our chorus, please email Barbara-Ann MacIntosh or call her at 401-560-0073 or, if you would like to join us online and see what it’s all about, contact Camilla Streeter for the Zoom link. For the safety of everyone, we follow state and CDC current recommended guidelines. Singing indoors is well-documented to be a “super-spreader” event, so at this time we are only welcoming vaccinated visitors. Our rehearsal space is large enough to allow for comfortable social distancing by each participant. For the foreseeable future, to enhance our mutual safety, we are wearing singer’s masks while in the church building.

This year’s tournament will be on Saturday, October 23 at Swansea CC. It will be an 11AM shotgun start with a “Bramble” format. In this format you take the best drive of your foursome then every player plays their own ball to the end of the hold. Best wo scores on each hole are counted. Lots of cash prizes, a hole in one car, special cash drawing, and a super BarBQ pork and chicken dinner to conclude. Contact information, Bill Cute (508-252-9435) Ray Medeiros (508496-0171), Mike Ursillo (508-252-3119), Ray Olivier (508-493-2796), or Arthur Almeida ( 508 212 4697.) The upcoming Rehoboth Lions golf tournament will be held at Swansea CC in late October. We certainly hope that issues with the COVID virus will have lessened by then, but we are definitely prepared for any eventuality. After play has completed our wonderful pulled pork and chicken BarBQ will be served outdoors in a covered facility. In addition, we are limiting our tournament to no more than 18 foursomes which will allow each group to have plenty of room in the dining area, and which will allow for play to move along in a speedier way. The usual format of having raffle prizes at the conclusion will not be taking place. There will be a few premium silent auction golf foursomes offered. The only raffle will be a 50/50 raffle with cash prizes. All of this will be in addition to prizes for our top four teams, long drive, closest to the pin, and putting contest. We are looking froward to a fantastic day of golf and to making a great contribution to Massachusetts Lions Eye Research. Signup forms are available from Mike Ursillo (508-252-3119), Bill Cute (508-252-9435), Ray Olivier (508-493-2796), Arthur Almeida ( 508 212 4697 or Ray Medeiros (508-496-0171) or email medeirr@ comcast.net. Rehoboth Ramblings by Leslie Patterson

Thoughts in the City by the Sea

Newport, the City by the Sea, is still drawing lots of visitors this fall. You could see license plates from all over the country in the parking lot at The Breakers in late September. When I finally got a look at new Welcome Center at The Breakers, I couldn’t understand what all the fuss had been about before it was built. Some of the old guard in Newport had been up in arms about how it would ruin the property. Yet it seemed to me nicely designed in a somewhat Art Nouveau style. It includes a nice café and brand new restrooms. The Welcome Center cost five and a half million so it should be nice. I’m of two minds about the Newport mansions. They are fun to tour and a perfect place to take visitors to our area. Yet I always feel that these monuments to conspicuous consumption shouldn’t have been built in the first place, or at least not with such an over-the-top extravagance (“summer cottages” indeed!). The robber barons of

the Gilded Age took the old saying about every man’s home being his castle a bit too literally. The competing Vanderbilt mansion, Marble House, is so aptly named that I call it Mausoleum House. Not that the Preservation Society of Newport County is candid enough to refer to the mansions’ original owners as robber barons. They are always somewhat reverential when referring to these 19th century plutocrats. It surprises me to see how many of these imposing mini-castles on Bellevue and Ocean Drive are still privately owned today. Clarendon Court, the notorious von Bulow estate, just sold for over 30 million. I’m eager to read the new book by Anderson Cooper about his family history, a book simply called “Vanderbilt.” His mother Gloria was one of those objecting to the new visitors’ center at the Breakers, shortly before she died at age 95 a couple of years ago. She certainly had an interesting, if often troubled life. I imagine Mr. Cooper doesn’t care too much one way or the other about a visitors’ center at the former ancestral abode. He’s got enough to keep him busy. We had tickets for the grounds at three locations, starting with Green Animals in Portsmouth. We enjoyed a temporary sculpture exhibit in the garden there, but thought that the topiary itself was looking a little bare. It was fun to sit on the porch and look at the lovely view of the bay. We wondered if 100 years from now tourists will be visiting the former palatial home of Bill Gates outside Seattle. Or maybe there will be a flight museum dedicated to the rocket ships of today’s billionaires. Any super-rich person can have several homes, a yacht or two, and a private jet. You have to attempt space travel to get really noticed these days. Don’t get me started on billionaires, especially on the subject of Mr. Bezos, his rocket, and his company. If you are one of the richest men in the world, could you not afford to pay your lowly workers more? And on a more trivial note, do you need to charge Amazon Prime members extra to stream some of the movies on your service? Do you really need my extra $4 when I want to view an 80-year-old movie? At this point, I usually try to get the DVD from the library instead, out of pique. The streaming business is sort of the Wild West of TV entertainment these days. Every time I pick up the Roku remote there is yet another service available. How many of these do you want to subscribe to anyway? And why is the one show you want to watch only on one of the services you don’t have? No, I don’t want to be constantly signing up for a free trial and then having to cancel. But getting back to Newport, the historic Ocean Drive around the shoreline to Brenton Point State Park is one of the most picturesque and enjoyable drives in Rhode Island. But as for the mansions themselves, I would prefer something a little more cozy myself. Bellevue Avenue is the ultimate symbol of another old saying, “It’s a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.”

The Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District announced at a school committee meeting on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 that they have received a donation of $100,000 from the Terry Family. Janice Terry is a Dighton Rehoboth School Committee member whose daughter Lisa attended Dighton Rehoboth Schools before working in the mail delivery department at Bristol County Savings Bank in Taunton. Lisa, an adult with disabilities, successfully held this position for 25 years and contributed a great deal to the community. Supt. Dr. Anthony C. Azar said, “On behalf of the school district we are extremely appreciative of this incredible tribute to a beautiful person who epitomized everything wonderful about life.” Mr. and Mrs. Terry also indicated that they are grateful for all the special education teachers in the Dighton Rehoboth School District who helped to prepare Lisa for her career at Bristol County Savings Bank. When Lisa passed away in August, 2021, the Terry family wished to honor her legacy with a donation for the purpose of continuing to help others with disabilities. Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District Special Education Director, Kristin Donahue, is working closely with the Terry family to

October 2021 honor Lisa’s legacy and support the special education programs. Supt. Azar continued, “The Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District is extremely grateful for the generous donation from the Terry Family on behalf of their cherished daughter, Lisa.”

Guidance on Covid Testing

By Joe Siegel The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District has sent out guidelines to parents regarding what actions they should take if their child tests positive for Covid-19. In a September 21 letter, D-R Superintendent Anthony Azar outlined the challenges the district faces due to the ongoing pandemic. “As we navigate these early school days, we must continue to monitor and respond to current health conditions,” Azar said. “Utilizing health and safety protocols to ensure students can stay in school learning and connected to others is critical for a productive year. With the appropriate health and safety measures in place, we can successfully address learning and provide appropriate social emotional support to students.” Azar noted in order for the district “to facilitate our ability to screen your child/student for COVID 19 should your child present with symptomatic concerns, parental permission needs to be on file.” There was also a link to a survey. “We are asking you to provide important input regarding the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds,” Azar explained. “The American Rescue Plan was enacted on March 11, 2021 and provides additional funds for school districts to respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In order for the district to receive these funds, the district must consult with key stakeholder groups to help us set priorities on how best to utilize these funds.”

Jeff Riley, the Commissioner for DESE, and Margret Cooke, Acting Commissioner for the DPH, issued a letter to school superintendents on August 13. It reads in part: “The Test and Stay program is a testing initiative intended for asymptomatic close contacts of individuals with confirmed COVID-19. This testing program will allow asymptomatic close contacts to remain in school if they receive an individual rapid antigen test (e.g. BinaxNOW) each school day and test negative, as well as follow other guidelines.”

DRRSD Hires New Business Manager

By Joe Siegel The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School Committee voted last month to hire Robert Baxter to serve as the district’s Business Manager. Superintendent Anthony Azar introduced Baxter at Tuesday’s meeting. “Rob is still working out a separation with the Warwick School District,” Azar said. “We hope to have that done very soon. In the meantime, instead of holding us up, Rob is the acting Business Manager as of a few days ago.” Baxter had served as Director of Finance and Operations for the Warwick school district since last January. He had been placed on administrative leave in July after an investigation was launched due to numerous allegations of procurement, policy, and procedure issues. Baxter’s lawyer, Andrew Sinapi, maintained his client did nothing inappropriate while on the job. When asked about the controversy, Baxter said the situation in Warwick became tumultuous following the appointment of a new School Superintendent last June. Paul Kitchen, who had served as Business Manager for the district for the last two years, resigned in July.

Retired Palmer River School Employees September Breakfast

The retirees of Palmer River School met once again for the opening of school. The group started doing this twenty years ago. Last year, due to Covid, they sat in a socially distanced circle on Redway Plain and brought their own lunches. This year, thanks to the wonderful folks at Vino’s, they were able to meet as a group indoors. Vino’s opened early so the retirees could socially distance indoors and enjoy getting together. The retirees group started with one Janice and three Carols who retired together. It is open to all retired staff members of the school: teachers, aides, janitors, secretaries, administrators and consultants. The group tries to get together monthly but the Back to School in September and Holiday luncheon in December are definitely the most popular. If you worked at The Palmer River School and would like to join the group (and get the monthly newsletter), please contact Janice Rogala at janiceruth17@yahoo.com.

Meet Beckwith Middle School’s Frederick Randall

By Joe Siegel Frederick Randall is settling in as Principal of Dorothy L. Beckwith Middle School. Randall was born in Baltimore, Maryland but grew up in the town of Wayland, Massachusetts. He attended Allegheny College in Frederick Randall Pennsylvania, where he studied political science and history. At the time, education wasn’t a career he was considering. Randall had two brothers who were much younger than him. When he graduated from college, he ended up coaching youth football. “I kind of got recruited,” Randall recalled. “I love the game. I just fell in love working with the kids. That changed my life.” Randall worked at before and afterschool programs, before becoming a special education teaching assistant and later a middle school social studies teacher. Randall later earned his certification as an administrator. He was a Principal of DoverSherbourne Middle School and then worked at two urban charter schools. Before coming to Rehoboth, Randall was Principal of the Sizer School in Fitchburg. Working at Beckwith appealed to Randall because of its close proximity to Holliston, where he and his family reside. Randall started at Beckwith on August 30. “It’s been very positive,” Randall said. “I love the kids. I think they’re fantastic. Very supportive and involved parents and the staff, we’re really blessed here to have highly experienced teachers. They’ve been wonderful resources to me.” Randall is in the midst of his own learning process, gathering information as a way to better serve the students. “I’ve put out a few surveys to staff and also to families to gather their impressions on strengths and their ideas for growth for Beckwith,” Randall added. “I’m looking to form strong relationships because I think that’s really the key to being a good leader.”

Principal’s Message

Dear Beckwith Middle School Parents/ Guardians: I would like to thank you all again for your support and collaboration in working with us to open school safely and successfully! A key responsibility and challenge of being a new school leader is to find timely ways to survey the learning community about a school’s strengths and growth opportunities at the same time you are working to keep operations up and running smoothly. One way leaders manage this challenge is to develop and schedule “Entry Plan” activities to make sure they create time

The Reporter

and avenues to collect feedback, gather information and build relationships. With that in mind, I am sending this Google form of “Entry Plan Questions” to all Beckwith Parents/Guardians. I ask that you consider completing this survey by October 15, 2021. Faculty members are also in the process of completing an “Entry Plan” survey for me as well. I am finalizing a Beckwith student survey, which I will work on with staff to find the best way for students to complete it for me without missing any valuable class time. It is my goal to share with the school community, probably at some point in January or February, 2022, any patterns or trends that I learn to help guide our future work together. I want you to know that you are welcome to contact me to set up a personal meeting time. I am open to meeting in person, virtually, or by phone call. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or would like further information. Sincerely, Frederick Randall

All members of this volunteer organization are invited to attend; new members are always welcome. The Blanding is now requiring all patrons to wear masks while in the building. How to Choose a Medicare Plan During the Open Enrollment Period

By: The My Medicare Matters Team with edits by Bradley Marshall-SHINE Coordinator for Rehoboth Choosing a Medicare plan is an important, but difficult decision. This choice could determine your health for years to come and save (or cost) you hundreds of dollars in out-of-pocket costs. However, during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP)/ Annual Election Period (AEP) October 15 through December 7, you can re-evaluate your Medicare Advantage (MA/Part C) and/or a Part D and or your Medigap Plan coverage to make sure you’re enrolled in the plan that fits your needs best. But with so many options it’s hard to figure out: 1.If your current plan is best for you, and 2.How to choose a better plan to fit your needs Using the 4Cs of Medicare – Coverage, Cost, Convenience, and Customer Service you can assess the quality of your current plan and if needed, find a new one that better fits your needs. Here’s what you should consider when switching plans during the OEP/AEP.

57

• Was your out-of-pocket cost more expensive than you had planned? Are you visiting the doctor as much as you had anticipated? Or perhaps more frequently than expected, causing more copays and deductibles than you had anticipated? You may want to switch to a more affordable option. • Did you enter the Part D Coverage Gap (“donut hole”) in 2020?

Convenience

When deciding on the type of coverage you need you should also think about how accessible your physicians need to be. With Original Medicare, you can choose to see any physician who accepts Medicare. This means that you can access major medical centers nationwide. On the other hand, MA plans are more restricted in terms of the provider networks (doctors, hospitals, or pharmacies) they work with, which means you need to see doctors or visit hospitals that are “in-network” with your MA plan to avoid paying higher medical fees. Before enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan confirm if your local pharmacy is included in their network. Typically these pharmacies will reduce your out-of-pocket cost for prescription drugs. Here are a few things you should consider before choosing a plan: • Do you plan on going a few long trips this year? All plans cover emergency hospital coverage, but if you need routine access to a physician while on vacation you may want to consider a plan that has a flexible network. Will you be able to get your prescriptions easily while away from home? continued on next page...

Coverage

Before you begin comparing Medicare plans, you should start by assessing your health needs. Make a list of how many doctors you have, how often you have appointments, and your prescription drug needs. Then, you can begin assessing your coverage options. If you decide to add or switch Medicare Advantage and/ or Part D and/or Medigap there are few things you should consider about coverage: • Has your health status changed within the last year? • Are the services you need covered under your current plan (treatments, prescriptions, vision coverage, etc.)? Are there other health-related services that you would like covered? Examples might include alternative treatments, personal health devices, transportation or meal assistance? • Does your current plan or the plans you’re considering cover all the drugs you think you will need in 2022? • How do the plans rank under the star quality rating system? Are there any 5-star plans? These 5 stars plans are in Medicare Advantage type and Part D type.

Cost

When you first enrolled in Medicare, you may have picked a plan based on the recommendation of a friend, or assistance from a SHINE office, or just chose a fairly inexpensive plan since the coverage difference between each option seemed nominal. Now as a seasoned Medicare beneficiary there are a few cost considerations you should re-evaluate. • Are your financial circumstances the same? • What is the total projected annual and monthly cost with the plan you have vs the plan you’re considering? Have these costs gone up for 2022?

• Do you have a preferred pharmacy and is it included in the plans you’re considering? Do the costs of your medications change under the different plans based on that pharmacy? • If you prefer to get your prescription in the mail, do the plans offer mail order delivery? Is the price higher or lower than picking it up at a “brick & mortar” pharmacy?

Customer Service

Last, but certainly not least, you should consider the quality of customer service you received with your current plan when thinking about switching.

• Were you satisfied with the quality of care you desired with your current plan? • How responsive was your plan with questions or problems you may have had? • How did your plan help you manage your health care needs (access to primary care, specialist, and prescriptions)? There are a lot of consideration when choosing a Medicare plan, but using the 4Cs helps you focus on the aspects that are most important. The good news is that you don’t have to search for Medicare plans on your own. Use the CMS: Medicare questionnaire (https://www.medicare.gov/sites/default/files/2018-07/11386_medicare-questions... a Medicare-related inquiry was created to help you figure out your options. You’ll be able to talk to a free licensed benefits advisor to discuss changing Medicare plans and discuss any other questions you may have about Medicare. Or you can contact your local SHINE representive in most Councils on Aging. For Rehoboth residents contact Bradley Marshall – 508-252-3772 – at 183 Winthrop Street, Rehoboth. Elder Dental Program

Overall good health includes a healthy mouth. Bacteria from the mouth can cause infections in other parts of the body, especially when the immune system is weakened by disease or medical treatments. Taking good care of your mouth is very important. Gum disease develops when plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – is allowed to build up along and under the gums. People who have health conditions, such as diabetes are also at risk because they are more open to infections and may be less able to fight bacteria that invade the gums. What can you do to reduce your risk? Seeing both your dentist and physician to spot and treat various health conditions relating to gum disease is great first step. Good home care such as brushing and flossing, as well as visiting your dentist regularly are important. The Elder Dental Program (EDP) is a non- profit, program that provides quality, affordable oral health care to low-income seniors, ages 60 and older, through a group of community dentists who volunteer to provide treatment at reduced, sliding-scale fees. The EDP helps seniors who have incomes that fall at 250% or less of the Federal Poverty Level. Care not covered by the sliding-scale fee schedule is absorbed by the dentist. We find seniors a “dental home” where they can continue to have regular care, as well as emergency dental services, at reduced fees they can afford. For more information about this program contact Chris Weylman at 774-203-1326 or email at Cweylman@ communityvna.com you may also contact Bradley Marshall at 508-252-3772 to also assist with application to this program

When Should I Review My Estate Planning Documents?

By: Brandon C. Walecka, Esq. Walecka Law, P.C. 774-203-9003 Brandon@WaleckaLaw.com Clients often ask about ideal times to review their documents. Although there is no hard-and-fast rule about when you should review your estate plan, I generally recommend that you should consider reviewing your documents upon the occurrence of a major life event, which may include marriage, divorce, or death of a spouse; birth or death of a child or loved one; following a substantial change in the value of your estate; if you expect to receive a sizable inheritance or gift; after you purchase new real estate; when you are approaching retirement; or you hear of tax law changes that

you feel may affect you, just to name a few. One of the biggest fears I have (which I see happen more often than I would like), is an individual establishes an estate plan with another law firm, and then no one reviews the documents again for several years. In many instances, this results in the family becoming frustrated to find that what is in place may or may not work as originally planned. Life changes and we want to make sure your estate plan continues to do what you intended it to do. Reviewing your estate plan will give you peace of mind, which is why it is encouraged that you have your plan reviewed every three to five years. At the review, you and the attorney should review your existing documents, suggest new or updated documents (if necessary), discuss changes in your life, and help to ensure that what you have in place will work as intended in the future. Reviewing your estate plan will not only give you peace of mind, but it will allow a discussion about changes in the law that have happened since you established the documents. Estate planning can be affected by changes at the state and federal level. If it has been some time since you have reviewed your estate plan, perhaps 3-5 years or longer, consider calling your qualified estate planning and elder law attorney to see if you would benefit from a review meeting. * NOTE: Seekonk Human Services offers legal, financial, recreational, medical screenings, and other activities/services by volunteers or nominally-paid practitioners. R estaurant G uide Savory, Smothered Cuisine (Culinary.net) When you are hungry and searching for something filling, juicy and rich, turning to your pantry for on-hand ingredients can make dinner a breeze. Dodge snack cravings and avoid the temptation to swing by the drive-thru; instead, you can have a homemade meal ready in a matter of minutes by putting your skillet to work. Call your loved ones to the dining room to share time together while trying these Smothered Pork Chops in Mushroom Sauce. It’s a dish the entire family can dig into without questioning the substance of the meal as it’s a filling option that requires just a few ingredients you likely already have at home. It all starts with the pork chops, which are thick and seared to perfection. The mushroom sauce is a beautiful blend of earthy and creamy textures. Bring it to a simmer then smother your pork chops and garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color. The best part is this recipe doesn’t take much time to accomplish. The pork chops are seared for 3-5 minutes per side then simmered in the mushroom sauce for another 2-3 minutes until thoroughly cooked.

Don’t waste time with complicated recipes, dirtying an array of kitchen utensils and multiple trips to the store for ingredients you may not use again. This recipe requires one bowl and a single skillet. Cleanup is a breeze, which means there is more time to spend around the table with those who mean the most. Find more savory recipes at Culinary.net. If you made this recipe at home, use #MyCulinaryConnection on your favorite social network to share your work.
