Family and Friends Fondly Remember Nancy Carpenter
by Leslie Patterson Nancy Carpenter, who died in June at the age of 92, leaves many warm memories among her extended family and many friends. Nancy is survived by her beloved husband Joseph Carpenter, her daughter Polly Carpenter of New York City, and two grandchildren, Karima Carpenter Hamamsy and Tymor Carpenter Hamamsy. Nancy and Joe were married in 1949 and lived in the same house in Rehoboth throughout their long marriage. Nancy first came to Rehoboth as a young teacher during World War II. “Everyone said that my mother was a great teacher,” Polly Carpenter said. “She was always proud to say that she was the first teacher in Massachusetts to make $1000 a year.” The youngest of six children of Cynthia and Hugh Walker, Nancy was born in Providence. Her father founded the very successful Walker Electric Company. Nancy grew up in a house in Providence, on a farm in Cumberland (where she had a pet goat and a pet pig), and at a beach house in Touisset Point. Nancy was a graduate of Lincoln School in Providence, attended Skidmore College, and graduated from Lesley College. She taught for 12 years at North Rehoboth School and for 12 years at Wheeler School in Providence. Nancy was a lifetime member of the Rehoboth Garden Club, the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society, and the Friends of the Blanding Library, among other organizations. The family has requested that donations in Nancy’s memory be made to the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society, P.O. Box 2, Rehoboth, MA. continued on page 4...
