Our Election on June 30, 2020
With everything that is going on right now in the world and all of the uncertainties ahead it seems strange to focus on politics but, we do have an election on June 30th in which we will have to decide who will be best suited to be on our regional school committee. I am asking you to vote for me for one of these seats. Over the last several years our district has had an unstable budget which could not be agreed upon by the two towns involved and the joint school committee. This instability has impacted how many parents including my family feel about keeping our kids educated here. Many families decided that this uncertainty had gone on long enough and chose to send their kids to private schools, Bristol Plymouth or Bristol County Agricultural High School. We too considered this, but in the end we decided that we would approach this differently. I chose to run for a seat on the school committee and would like to be part of the answer to this problem versus leaving. I currently have two children in this district, one who will be a junior and the other who will be a freshman in the high school. Both of them are highly involved in a variety of activities and sports as well as taking advanced or AP courses. I have a vested interest in how well this district performs as it will directly impact the programs, services and activities they take or participate in. I have an older son who was also part of this district until this April. He required specialized educational services for his entire life and was supported by this district through his programming, Best Buddies and Unified Track just to name a few. Currently, I am a speech language pathologist who works in the Seekonk Public School District but my former career was in the private sector at a fortune 500 company for approximately 15 years . The career transition transpired because of my desire to support and facilitate my son’s delayed communication skills. My knowledge and background in education is extensive in both my professional and personal experiences. I believe I have a very strong understanding to hold this position, but I also know that there is a great deal to learn and I am prepared to do just that. I firmly believe in a school district that is capable of providing a quality education that is affordable to the Town and maintainable without the need for operational budget overrides. There are many parts of the school budget which are mandatory and required by the federal and state governments but not funded. The Department of Education consistently updates and modifies what school districts are required to do to support the education of our students but funding for these programs or supports are rarely enough (or even nonexistent). This then falls on the individual towns to carry the burden. Our current financial situation for both the state and town is projected to create an economic strain which will be at an all time high. Supporting realistic budgets now that prepare us for the potential shortfalls to come while minimally impacting the quality of our town’s educational system will be my first priority. This is all done by working collaboratively with our fellow school committee members, school administrators, town selectmen and finance committees. Strong communication lines between all of these parties are the only way for all of us to get through these trying times to come. Finally I ask you to consider requesting an Early Voting Ballot Application found on our Town’s website via this link https://www.town.rehoboth.ma.us/ . The application is on the home page and easily accessible. For your own welfare and convenience you can vote from the safety of your own home. I recommend you do this as soon as possible in order to receive and then return your ballot. If you have questions or need assistance with this or any other questions you may have for me please visit my Facebook page, Ellen Corvi’s campaign for Dighton Rehoboth School Committee and post your comments or concerns. I want to hear from you. Ellen Corvi - Rehoboth

Why you should vote Richard Barrett and Aaron Morse!
Those of us that felt it was important enough to attend our town meetings last year, some at great effort due to age or other hardship and feel our right to vote the second most important privilege to being an American, were mystified to say the least, that not once but three times had our votes nullified by eight of ten school committee members. How, you and I asked, could this happen in the United States of America!!!? Well come to find out by Mass State Law they could actually do this. Mind you they could do this! They did not have to! So my question is how could they disregard and negate an overwhelming majority vote? I have never seen or heard an explanation, but how could they even think about defending such an egregious decision. The three school committee members who voted to ignore our 80 % plus majority vote are Katherine Cooper, Craig Chapman, and Anthony Arrigo. Our other two members George Solas and Richard Barrett voted with the majority of the Towns voters not only because they agreed with them they knew it was the correct vote. Richard Barrett and Anthony Arrigo are up for reelection June 30th. Please vote with me for Richard Barrett. A man who has common sense and can comprehend the reasoning behind such an overwhelming vote. He will not abuse your right to vote! It is with great pleasure that we have a new candidate to vote for in Aaron Morse. Aaron also has great common sense and an excellent grasp of the importance of an education along with the sense of responsibility to the tax payers, something that is seriously lacking in other school committee members. Maybe it is time to start thinking about withdrawal from K-8. That would give us a great deal of control back. 10 school committee members could NOT negate our votes and DESE would have much less control over us. The high school would only have 3 & 3 school committee and Rehoboth K- 8 would have a 3 Rehoboth resident school committee giving Rehoboth complete control of 2/3 of our school budget. Please vote for Richard Barrett and Aaron Morse on June 30th. Keep in mind because of the present conditions you have the option of voting by mail. You can go to the Town web site and print out the application for a ballot. The ballot will be mailed to you and must be returned to the Town Clerk by June 30th. Voting is one of our most privileged rights and no one has a right to take it AWAY!!! If you have any problems please call the Town Clerks office. Thanks so much for taking the time to keep Rehoboth a special place to live. Jay Crandall

Loose Dogs in Seekonk
Thank you Brent Gilliam for your letter concerning loose dogs at The Meadows, the open space area behind the Seekonk Library. In January, I came to the hard decision to stop walking my dog at the Meadows. I had been walking her there daily, twice a day. Months earlier I had to stop walking my dog at Gammino Pond for the same reason. Unfortunately, encounters with loose dogs had become the norm instead of the exception. Yes, the owner often yelling that their dog was safe or ignoring my calling out for them to leash their dog. If you are not holding the leash that is attached to your dog or the leash is draped around your neck, your dog is not leashed. Not a safe situation for the owners or the dogs. Last year I did contact Seekonk Animal Control, the Seekonk police, the selectmen’s office, and the committee that oversees the Meadows with my concern about loose dogs. Many months later, a sign was placed at the opening of the Meadows and one at the opening of Gammino Pond. The last line of the third paragraph states that dogs must be leashed. It is not highly visible and too often ignored. Dog bags and litter barrels were also placed at that time, which was very nice. But you can’t pick up after your dog if you don’t know where they went. I would propose that an easy solution would be to post a large, visible sign at the opening of the Meadows and one at the opening of Gammino Pond that states clearly that dogs must be leashed. It would be nice if that space is safe and accessible to all. Sincerely, Beverly Procopio

No Training Needed
The current Town Clerk has overseen many elections since she was elected three years ago. That is the way you learn the election process. The candidate running against the current clerk obviously does not feel that she could run the important upcoming November election as she thinks that Boston will send someone to train her. They do not do that. Florice Craig has earned our support for re-election. She continues to keep residents informed with her article each month in the Seekonk Reporter. Without a daily or weekly paper in Seekonk, the Reporter is the best way to keep residents informed. I ask that you support Florice at the upcoming town election. Dear Seekonk Neighbor
I am writing to respectfully ask that you remember to vote for Adam Petronio as your Selectman on June 30th at the Annual town election. This year’s election has been significantly delayed due to recent crisis so please vote either by absentee ballot or at the High School. As Selectman, my first priority is to remain a servant-leader and represent the best interests of all Seekonk residents. I understand the tremendous responsibility that is entrusted in serving as a member of the chief policy-making board of our great town. I pledge to use the skills in policy formation, administration, and ethical decision-making that I have developed over the past 30 years of military and civilian service, for the betterment of the community we call home. Seekonk is rich in history and culture. We have experienced tremendous growth over the past decade. Now, more than ever, proper management and leadership is needed to oversee the spending of our hard-earned tax dollars. I believe that we can do that through good stewardship. We all deserve clear, simple, and honest communication efforts so informed voting choices can be made. I believe it is important for voters to know who they are voting for and how that person makes decisions. My decision-making philosophy is based upon these simple questions: Does this decision meet the purpose of government? (or should it be a private business concern?) Is it legal, ethical, and moral? Does it meet Fiscal Law rules– Time, Purpose, and Amount? Are there any equal opportunity, fair practice, or diversity concerns? Should a decision be made, or is it provided elsewhere in an already established government program? Thank you for your time and again, I respectfully ask that you consider me, Adam Petronio, when you cast your vote on June 30th. -Adam Petronio

Is Anyone Listening?
After the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Wednesday, May 13th you have to wonder, “What are they thinking?” The most concerning is the Chairman and his willingness to utilize the Stabilization Fund to shore up a possible revenue shortage for the new fiscal year. If it were possible to reach through the television, I would have asked him just how much he was willing to gamble on our future. Rewinding for just a second, everyone knows we have an uncertainty to state aid this coming year and why. When dealing with Continued on next page...

8 The Reporter June 2020 projections the first thing should have been “How do we keep the services and staffing we currently have in place?” Contractual obligations keep the salary lines increased. Fixed costs are always on the rise and so on. Adding to staff is so far off the radar screen for the next fiscal year it should be invisible. Yet, the Town Administrator is asking for a Human Resource Director/ Assistant Town Administrator to the tune of $90,000 annually. What is worst is that the Board voted to keep it in the budget with exception of Justin Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan took the responsible step in saying no, not now.
The question of the need for the position is not a doubt, however, the timing of such is totally irresponsible. To compound the problem, the Chairman suggested to utilize the Stabilization Fund in the event our revenue projections fall short. He could not be more wrong. It has taken this Town many years to build a Stabilization Fund and for the following reason. Banks look at savings when we look to them for loans. Loans are based on favorable bond ratings. Those bond rates drive our interest rates. So again, ask the Chairman of the Board just how much of Stabilization is he willing to gamble? We have a shopping list of projects coming that will require a debt exclusion for each. Below is just a sample of what we as taxpayers will be looking to do. The Senior Center – Phase II (completing the project) DPW Facility (should be priority) South End Fire Station (public safety) Library (monies already spent on plans) School Upgrades (possible changes to the Hurley Middle School, Athletic Field at the High School) Our debt is coming down as the bond for the Martin/High School Project, started in 2003 will be done in 2023. It would be wise to keep our savings in check and not use it to balance operating budgets. Looking at the request for a new position please keep this in mind. It is reorganizing a town department. We have never had this type of position before. According to the Seekonk Home Rule Charter, the Town Administrator has the right to make changes to the organization, but it is supposed to be finalized with a vote from the Board of Selectmen. This has never been done and it is not the first-time liberties have been taken with reorganization. Many times, questions have been submitted and ignored about holding (2) Department Heads in Animal Control. This too, is a reorganization of a town department without the proper procedure being followed. The Chairman of the Selectmen continues to allow it to happen. A proper job description has not been Dr. Debra George & Dr. Kelsey George produced for the new position much less voted on by the Board and seemingly we We are open and happy to welcome you back! have a price tag attached to it. Sandra Escaler for Seekonk Town Clerk 2020…
Who is Sandra Escaler? For starters she is a mother of 3, a wife to a life-long Seekonk resident, and a member of the community. Born in Terceira, Acores, raised in Pawtucket since the age of 2, Seekonk resident and homeowner for the last 8+ years. Her children attend the Seekonk Schools. She speaks both Portuguese and Spanish fluently. Her profession is a RI & MA licensed Real Estate Broker. Duties and experience include, record-keeping, various administrative duties, organizational skills, attending regular meetings and trainings, working with various forms of technology based apps and programs, maintaining licensing, effective and responsive communication to the general public and agents needs and requests, keeping updated on changes in the industry and laws through real estate continuing education, innovative thinking and planner, human resources, adhering to state laws and is very resourceful. Why now? Through a personal experience with the town she learned allot about the various functions of each department and how each work together. If not for her real estate knowledge and understanding of Zoning and MA laws, along with determination, persistence and attention to detail, the intended result would not have been achieved. She feels her background can be greatly beneficial to the town and general public. Sandra feels that the Town Clerk position is the hub of the town government, trusted link between the citizens and the town, and wants to be able to deliver a more personal experience, create a stronger unity and collaboration among the town and its people. Communication is particularly important, and everyone should personally know who their Town Clerk is. continued on next page...

This may turn into a long read but it may be well worth it to some. I am a Lifer. A Lifer is someone who has lived in Seekonk all of their life or in my case nearly all of it. (1964). My mother’s family are Lifer’s. The Saleeba’s have been here for over 100 years and we continue to grow. To a Lifer, this is home until the end. For those of you passing through whether it be for career or education you have to be able to recognize when Lifer’s are concerned about community. Consider this a plea for you to become engaged in your town government. I’m not saying you have to do to anything except be aware. Your tax dollars even on a short term keep services maintained or moving forward. If your life here is short term because of career or education your votes matter. Your participation matters and not just on the athletic fields. Almost 30 years ago I began my municipal education. No deFollow Dr. John Dacey’s podcasts on: gree, no certification, just participation. I learned from the people who knew a thing or two about town government. Some I agreed with and others I did not but I learned and drew on their experience. On June 22, 2020 we will be holding our “Spring Town Meeting”. Each Spring we collectively vote on a Budget Presentation for the next Fiscal Year that begins July 1st. I am planning on being there as long as I’m in good health that day however, it is never too late to get involved. If there is something you don’t understand, ask the hard questions. Hello Seekonk!! I’m running for re-election and I’m respectfully asking for your vote. In 7 1/2 years I’ve been fair, consistent and respectful on our board. 7th Annual Rabies Clinic ~ Postponed Date To Be Determined
As you know, the Rehoboth-Seekonk March 14, 2020 Rabies Clinic was postponed due to the Governor’s Orders of “gatherings no more than ten people”. We tentatively rescheduled the rabies clinic to Saturday, June 6, 2020 at the Rehoboth Animal Shelter (148 Peck Street) from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 p.m. but were awaiting guidance from the State to see if we will be able to hold the clinic due to the COVID-19 gathering mandates. On May 22nd, we announced that the Rehoboth Rabies Clinic scheduled for June 6, 2020 has been postponed. Phase One of the Massachusetts Reopening Plan allows only for gatherings of under 10-people, which makes it impractical to conduct the rabies clinic safely and remain in compliance with the guidance. We will consider rescheduling the rabies clinic as further guidance becomes available. We will keep you posted on the rescheduled Rabies Clinic on the Town website.
2020 Dog Licenses
The 2020 Dog licenses were due April 1, 2020. However, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Animal Control Officer and I have postponed the late fees until after the State of Emergency is lifted. You may license your dog(s) by dropping off your payment at the Drop Box in front of Town Hall (148 Peck Street). Please make sure you include any updated rabies vaccination certificates. Licenses may also be obtained online @ https://www.invoicecloud. com/rehobothgovsvcs, or by mail (if paying by mail, checks should be made payable to the “Town of Rehoboth”). The licensing fees are as follows: Male or Female dog $20.00; spayed or neutered dogs $10.00. Whether renewing online, via mail, or in person, dog license applications must be accompanied by a current year rabies certificate (with a vaccination date covering the current licensing year) and proof of spay or neuter [if applying for the $10 licensing fee] unless we already have your documentation on file in the Clerk’s Office. If you are unsure, please give our office a call, and we can tell you how up-to-date our information is. Reminder to those residents 70 years of age or older . . . if over 70 years old, as per MGL 140§139(c) and town meeting vote, the Clerk’s Office will waive the $10/$20 license fee; however, you must still apply for the license and show the current year rabies certificate. Please renew your dog licenses as soon as you are able ~ thank you. To date we registered 1,370 dogs and still have 895 to register. Remember, in addition to being a legal requirement, registering your dog assures the prevention of rabies, and provides easy identification to reunite lost dogs with their owners because they are now in our database.

turtle especially after summer rainstorms. It can close up tightly in its shell so that a raccoon cannot pry it open. The box turtle, once common in southern New England, can live 100 years. The smaller spotted turtle, bluish black and covered with bright yellow spots, is found in shallow wetlands and vernal pools. If a female turtle is killed by a car or tractor, it means the loss of many future eggs for the population. Habitat fragmentation due to development and roadkill are the leading causes of turtles disappearing. The Land Trust and turtle friendly private lands can help these reptiles still thrive in Rehoboth. If you do see a turtle on the road, never swerve to avoid it, but please slow down. If it is safe to stop (think human safety first!), move the turtle in the direction it was headed. Never move a turtle to a new location far away since it wants to stay in its home territory. Wear gloves or use a snow shovel to help larger turtles such as the snapping turtle out of the road. Join us as a member: see our website at www.rehobothlandtrust.net

Give Turtles a Brake!
The Rehoboth Land Trust provides excellent habitat for our local turtles. Turtles have changed little over the past 200 million years, but our roads and cars are no match for them. Beginning late May and continuing through early July, female turtles search for high sunny ground to bury their eggs. It will take 2-3 months of warmth for the baby turtles to develop underground and hatch. It will take another 10-12 years for a hatchling to reproduce. It must first beat the odds of being eaten by a raccoon, skunk, a wading bird or a bull frog. Our most common turtle is the painted turtle with its yellow striped head. Much less common, but still to be found, is the wood turtle that winters in rivers like the Palmer and in clear sandy bottom streams. This beautiful animal with its sculptured shell and brick orange neck was once very common and spends most of the summer on land foraging for berries and worms. There are occasional reports from Land Trust property of the eastern box

Rehoboth Selectmen Approve Bare Bones Budget
By Joe Siegel The Rehoboth Board of Selectmen approved a budget for July which provides the essentials to keep the town running. Town departments have been instructed to restrain spending. “It’s pretty much bare bones,” Chairman Gerry Schwall said Monday. The June town meeting was cancelled due to uncertainty regarding the state’s finances. Schwall said there could be a $5 billion shortfall in revenues because of the prolonged economic shutdown. The 2021 town budget will have to be approved by residents at a future date. Plans to reopen town hall are ongoing. Because of the risk of spreading COVID-19, office capacity will be limited to 25 percent in accordance with health recommendations from the state. That means an office which can accommodate four employees will be used by only one employee. Schwall noted town employees have the ability to do their jobs from home. Residents will have to adjust to the changes when town hall reopens to the public in July. “It’s going to look different,” Schwall said. “It’s going to feel different.”
New Leadership for D-R School Committee
By Joe Siegel The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School Committee has new leadership. Tom O’Connor, from Dighton, was elected as the new Chairperson at Tuesday’s meeting. Craig Chapman, from Rehoboth, was elected as the Vice-chairperson. George Solas, also from Rehoboth, was elected as the Secretary. Celeste Sullivan will serve as recording secretary and Gail Fisher will serve as Assistant Treasurer.

June 2020 The Reporter The Rehoboth Board of Selectmen voted to delay the June 30 town meeting due to continued uncertainty about the state budget. “Without town budgets voted by July 1st (the school district will) revert to a 1/12th Budget for the upcoming school year until such time as a budget is approved for both towns and the assessments are approved at town meetings,” O’Connor said. “Fortunately for the District the increase going into next year is just .4 percent, very small.” O’Connor noted the district has already been operating under a 1/12th budget “so we’re familiar with the nuances of what that entails and are prepared to operate in the 2021 school year the same way.”
As for when Community Covenant will be allowed to reopen, no one knows for sure. Gatherings may be limited to less than 50 people at a time. Lindberg said various options are being discussed, including a “picnic church” and a “drive-in church.” The church leadership is waiting for direction from government officials as to how to keep congregants safe when new infections are still being reported every day. “We want to make sure we’re honoring that and following those guidelines,” Lindberg added.

Rehoboth Church Adjusts to Pandemic
By Joe Siegel The coronavirus pandemic has presented a special challenge to houses of worship, which have had to conduct their services online as the state’s stay at home order remains in effect. “We had to make some adjustments to how we do church,” said Pastor Chris Lindberg of Community Covenant Church. “We’ve always been livestreaming our gatherings even when we were holding them so it was a little bit of tweaking but we were able to completely adapt over to a fully online Facebook Live/YouTube Live on our website.” Even though unemployment has soared in Massachusetts due to the economic shutdown, Lindberg said donations to the church have remained consistent. The church always hosts a massive Easter Egg Hunt which draws close to 1000 people. This year’s event was cancelled but “what we did do is we created an Egg Hunt in a bag,” Lindberg explained. The church delivered hundreds of the egg hunts in a bag to anybody who signed up for one. Lindberg said the church got a favorable response from the people they visited.

Established 1984 • Michael G. Salois, Owner (508) 222-2656 • Rehoboth, MA We recently used M.G. Salois Construction to replace our old and weathered decking. Mike gave us a fair estimate and description of the work that he would do. Our deck has been transformed into something we look forward to safely and proudly using this coming season. His craftsmanship is outstanding. Mike Kept us abreast of what he was doing and the reasons behind his decisions. He kept to the schedule he promised, only taking a break when weather conditions made work impossible. Not only did Mike keep to his cost estimate, but he found a few minor problems as he went along which he took care of at no extra charge. We would not hesitate to recommend Mike Salois for any project. ~The Benjamins

It’s been a long time coming, but June is finally here. I know everyone is glad for the warmer weather and the ability to go outside and enjoy the fresh air. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day. It was a quiet one, without the parade. I would like to take a moment now to remember the brave men and women and their families who made the Florice Craig ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedom. The month of May was an interesting one with Town Hall closed to the public. Thanks to the citizens of Seekonk for their patience and cooperation through this difficult time. It’s been difficult, but everyone has been wonderful adapting to new ways of getting things accomplished. We should be open to the public, by appointment, very soon. Town Meeting will be held on June 22, 7pm at the high school auditorium. You must be a registered voter to vote at this meeting. The last day to register to vote for this meeting is June, 12th. If you need to check your voter registration, or need to register to vote, you can go to: www.registertovotema.com For more information concerning the town meeting please go to the town web-site: www.seekonk-ma.gov You can also register ahead of time to let us know if you are going to attend town meeting. The registration can be found on front page of the town’s website. www.seekonk-ma.gov. The reason for a preregistration is to hopefully speed up the process of checking in and prevent long lines. You will still need to check in but all you will have to do is see one person tell them your name. We will already have your address and precinct information. Registering ahead of time is not mandatory, as some people may decide to attend at the last minute. It is very helpful if you know your precinct ahead of time so you can go directly to your precinct check-in table. If you do not know your precinct you can call the town clerk’s office and we will tell you. 508-336-2920. Town Election will be held on June 30, 8am-7pm at the high school gym. The deadline to register to vote in the town election is June19th. As stated above, in order to check your voter status, you can go to www.registertovotema.com The current pandemic will require modifications to the layout and format of our polling location to ensure a safe and successful voting process for all voters and election staff. A team of leaders in the town including myself, emergency management, public health officials and others are working on developing an election day plan which will include implementation of social distancing and sanitation protocols. That information will be provided on the Town web-site as soon as we have it. Under the Massachusetts constitution absentee ballots are available for all elections to voters who are disabled, out of town on Election Day, or have a religious belief preventing them from voting at the polling location on Election Day. In response to the declared state of emergency, legislation was passed to allow for early voting by mail, which essentially provides for no excuse voting by mail. To obtain a ballot by mail voters must complete an application which can be found on the town’s web-site www.seekonk-ma.gov or you may email me at fcraig@seekonk-ma.gov and I would be happy to email you the link to the application. To expedite the process I recommend voters email their applications to fcraig@seekonk-ma.gov Please note we are unable to process an application that does not include a voter’s signature. continued on page 24...

Seekonk Save A Pet Society Thanks Supporters!
Seekonk Save A Pet Society held its 33rd annual auction to benefit the Seekonk Animal Shelter in an unusual way this year. Last year we introduced an Online Bidding portion to our customary live event, which allowed for more participants and was successful. So, when we were unable to hold our biggest fundraiser of the year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we were prepared and ready to move forward with the Online Auction during the month of April. While we certainly missed seeing everyone in person, the Online Auction turned out to be a fun distraction during these challenging times and was a great success! We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who participated by donating gift cards, services and products and to those who bid on over 370 donated items! We also want to recognize our sponsors for their continued support... Herb Chambers Honda of Seekonk, Bank Rhode Island, Champion Motorsports, Minuteman Press of Seekonk, Rockland Trust and Ramada Conference & Banquet Center. We are truly grateful for your generosity and continued support! The SAVE A PET SOCIETY volunteers, Seekonk Animal Shelter staff, and our furry little residents of the shelter appreciates the support of everyone... THANK YOU!

Selectmen Approve 2021 Budget
By Joe Siegel The Seekonk Board of Selectmen voted 4-1 for a town budget of $61 million, minus $350,000 for the school department. Chairman David Andrade, Nelson Almeida, David Viera, and Chris Zorra voted yes. Selectman Justin Sullivan was the lone ‘no’ vote. The annual town meeting will be held on June 22. The school budget is $30 million, a 3.28 percent increase over the current fiscal year’s budget of $29.8 million. The board opted to keep the new position of Human Resources Director/Assistant Town Administrator at a cost of $90,000 a year. Town Administrator Shawn Cadime told the board his office has been deluged with added responsibilities as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. “We’ve become the hub for every single department,” Cadime said Wednesday. “There is not a day a department does not come in (to my office) and I do not need to address an issue with that department. There are errors being made. There are internal control issues that we need to address.” Selectmen expressed their worries about the impact declining state revenues would have on the budget. “I’m really concerned,” said selectmen David Viera. “I’m really concerned we’re going to have a shortfall. I still don’t see where we’re giving any relief to the taxpayers of the town and I think that’s where it’s going to be needed the most.” The entire budget can be accessed on the town’s web site: https://www.seekonk-ma.gov/sites/seekonkma/files/news/fiscal_year_2021_-_proposed_budget_presentation.pdf.

The Seekonk Educators Association (SEA) voted Friday to reject Installers MA Lic.#13268 a plan proposed by the School Committee to cut the 2020 Spring Season Coaches Salaries by 75 percent. Seekonk Coaches, whose salaries are covered in the SEA contract with the town, have been working with their teams and athletes all along in accordance with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) guidelines. “We do not believe it is fair to cut our dedicated coaches’ salaries at the last minute and after the work has been done. The season is almost over. If they really needed to do these steep cuts, the school committee should have proposed it back in March when the season was just starting,” said SEA President Sharon Ahern. Seekonk to Hire New Fire Chief
By Joe Siegel The Board of Selectmen voted Wednesday to hire David Rave as the town’s new Fire Chief. Rave is a Battalion Chief from East Providence with 35 years experience. “(Rave) brought a balanced approach and has the great leadership traits and we feel he would be a great mentor to all the young firefighters we have in the department,” said Town Administrator Shawn Cadime. “He is an exceptional candidate for us,” noted selectman Justin Sullivan, who was a member of the search committee. There were 29 applicants for the position. “We want to make sure that Seekonk continues to be a brand where people want to work, continue to work, and grow their families and build their businesses,” Cadime added. Former Fire Chief Michael Healy retired in May 2019 but has remained in the position during the search process for a replacement. The search for a new Police Chief is ongoing. David Enos has been serving as Acting Police Chief for the last year.
For the last 6 years, as a member of the Board of Selectmen, David has been a level headed voice of reason and a leader we look for and need to lead the Town of Seekonk. Seekonk Land Trust
Conservation Restrictions and Osamaquin Farm in Seekonk
What is a conservation restriction? A conservation restriction or CR (also known as a conservation easement) is a legal agreement that prevents any future development of the land, but does not alter the ownership of the land. This agreement is documented and recorded with the deed and is passed along to all future owners. It is enforced by the organization that holds the CR, typically a state or federal conservation agency or a private nonprofit organization such as a land trust. CR’s are appealing to some landowners because they are permanent, long-term agreements that can be crafted with a high degree of flexibility. The exact terms of a CR can be tailored to the individual characteristics of a property, and to the needs and interests of the landowner(s). CRs may allow timber management, wildlife improvements, trail creation, and agricultural use. After a CR is executed, the taxable value of the land may decrease significantly, possibly making it easier to pass the land on to the next generation. In most cases, public access is not required when a CR is placed on the land. While a CR restricts land from being developed, parcels of land may be excluded and set aside for future building lots.

The Covid-19 outbreak has created a unique set of pressures for some of the most vulnerable in our community; the need to minimize social exposure has made trips to the grocery store fraught with peril, while food shortages and economic stress have made food uncertainty a growing problem for our neighbors. The statewide crisis has strained the resources of the Boston Food Bank, and caused them to limit the amount of food we can order from them at any one time. In response, Doorways has been forced to purchase large quantities of product at retail, and to supplement bi-weekly food distributions to clients with gift cards to Stop & Shop. Yet in our hour of need, the residents of the town of Seekonk have responded magnificently to provide us with the resources to continue our work. Caroline Turenne and Christina Chen, juniors at Seekonk High School, organized a food drive to provide thousands of pounds of food for Doorways. This was especially key since the annual Postal Carriers food drive was forced to be cancelled earlier this spring. We thank Caroline and Christina, and all those who contributed to the food drive. But it goes further. One local family has volunteered every week to prepack several bags of food and paper goods for the over sixty client families served by the Doorways food pantry. Another team of volunteers unloads our truck after a pickup at the Boston Food Bank, then unpacks several dozen of boxes of foodstuffs and puts it all way. Several members of the Seekonk Congregational Church have delivered food to homebound clients, while Boy Scout Troop 1 has sent scout volunteers each week to help load the pre-packed groceries into the clients’ vehicles. Many longtime donors have sent an extra check to help the cause, while many first-time donors are adding their contribution to make sure the food keeps flowing. Local churches, civic organizations, businesses and individuals all are chipping in to take care of our own. We thank you all; we are humbled by your generous support. More than sixty local families rely on Doorways on a regular basis, and Doorways, in turn, relies on people like you. The Board of Directors, the volunteers, and especially the clients of Doorways food pantry would like to salute all of our supporters and benefactors in the Town of Seekonk. May God keep us all safe until the day when we can reach out and shake each of your hands in gratitude.

URI Freshman Awarded Prestigious Scholarship for Summer Language Studies Abroad
A University of Rhode Island freshman majoring in international studies, has been selected for a prestigious scholarship to study foreign languages abroad this summer. Cate McLaughlin of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, who also majors in French and Arabic, was awarded the Critical Language Scholarship by the U.S. Department of State, which sponsors a two-month intensive language study program abroad. McLauglin planned to participate in an intensive Arabic program in Meknes, Morocco, that would have included 20 hours per week of language classes plus regular excursions and cultural enrichment activities. Despite the program’s canCate McLaughlin celation, she hopes it is a stepping stone to being awarded a Boren Scholarship, a six- to twelve-month program that fosters the study of less commonlytaught languages for students aspiring to careers in public service. Her career plan is to help newly-arrived immigrants transition into a new culture in the United States. URI students interested in applying to the Critical Language Scholarship or Project Go Scholarship programs should contact the URI Office of National Fellowships and Academic Opportunities for guidance and institutional endorsement.
Billy Dalpe Reports to Boot Camp June 21st
It is with great pride that Beth and I announce Billy’s date to report to the Marine Corps boot camp is on June 21st. Sure it’s scary for us and we all will miss him incredibly but it’s not about us, it’s about Billy, and he is excited to start a new chapter in his life. We have seen him grow from a rug rat to fine young man right before our eyes. It breaks our heart that he could not experience all the “normal” things a senior in high school experiences, but Billy, as all the seniors, is Billy Dalpe taking the situation in stride. Billy is a graduate of Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical majoring in carpentry and worked a co-op job at Horner in Somerset. Billy has volunteered countess hours in service of the food pantry, his church, and other organizations through his life. Billy is no stranger to hard work and perseverance, and we are confident he will serve his country well!

10 Year Old Lucas Rodrigues of Rehoboth Pays It Forward After A Surprise Epic Birthday Parade! Like many other children celebrating birthdays in 2020, the celebration for our son Lucas was ruined by the Coronavirus Pandemic. This was not just any birthday though; this was his 10th birthday, a whole decade old! We had been thinking about a way to make his birthday feel special and decided on a birthday parade like many others are doing. We invited family and friends, Kona Ice joined, and we asked a local police officer if he might be able to lead the parade for us. Not only did he come through for us, but he brought along other police cruisers, fire and rescue trucks! The parade Lucas Rodrigues pays it forward started with screaming horns and sirens from all the vehicles then followed by Kona Ice and over 50 vehicles from all our friends and family! We even had an appearance by the EPIC movie cars with vehicles from Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters & Iron Man. Neighbors chalking their driveways with powerful messages. A special day it was for sure and Lucas could not have been happier to see all the first responders, his family & all his friends there to celebrate with him even if it was just a drive by! The next morning while we were having breakfast and discussing the excitement of the previous day, Lucas had come up with an idea. He was very appreciative that the Police, Fire & Rescue made his parade “so epic”! He made handwritten thank you cards that he wanted to deliver in person to the Police & Fire departments, but it was the next gesture that really made us proud to be his parents. He asked if we could pay it back and make a small donation to the Police and Fire departments. We are local Realtors in town, and he hears our conversations about supporting local business and paying back to the community all the time. Our office even kicked off an initiative this year called #KeystoneCares to pay a part of our commission to a charity of our client’s choice after each closing. We could not have been happier that he had thought of this on his own and of course we agreed! It is times like these that bring out the good in everyone! These are tough and unprecedented times for sure but this to shall pass. We have attended several birthday parades and will continue to whenever we are asked. We enjoy seeing the smiles on the children’s faces and our children love seeing their friends! Stay positive, be kind and continue to be a contributor to the community. Steven and Jennifer Rodrigues

Rehoboth Resident Isabelle Giuttari Frank Prentice Rand Scholarship in English Winner
RD Chimney Sweep Free Inspections • Licensed & Insured
Rehoboth resident Isabelle Giuttari (‘21) is a double major in English and Theater and a member of Commonwealth Honors College. Her area of interest in the major is early modern literature and creative writing, which has led her to pursue a letter of specialization in creative writing. Isabelle works at the Fine Arts Center as an office assistant and next year will serve as the President of the UMass/ Isabelle Giuttari Amherst Mock Trial Team. Isabelle is also a Charles A. Peters Prize winner: (for creative writing submission) (Faculty readers Joe Black and Adam Zucker) Isabelle Giuttari: “Broken Tongues: Tracing the Literalization of Language and Violence in Act 5, Scene 2 of Henry V”. The essay offers a sophisticated analysis of Shakespeare’s use of the French language in the history play Henry V, drawing on early modern primary sources, including dictionaries from the period, to show the extent to which a conversation employing two languages can be read as a continuation of warfare by other means. The essay is exceptionally well researched, skillfully argued, and written with a fine sense of style.

June News for the Rehoboth Garden Club
Due to the virus we have not had our regular meetings and activities. However, we got creative in our ways of still doing activities as a club. During the month of June, we will be participating in Zoom meetings for the first time. In May, the club participated in a drive by birthday for one of our club members. It was nice to come together in a safe way to celebrate. Even though we were unable to have our plant sale, we were able to raise some money for our scholarship fund. Many thanks to all who purchased plants and thank you Mary H. for growing them.
Anawan Oakton Grange News
The social distancing continues to delay meetings. The Grange will meet June 23 at 7 PM. Hopefully things will have been calming down by then. Looking forward to seeing our Grange friends. The Mass State Session is scheduled to be held October 29 to Nov 1 at Hotel 1620 in Plymouth. Our garden has been rototilled and compost added on top. The lilacs are in full bloom as are the Scottish Blue bells. We have pink, white and purple ones. Stay safe. Enjoy the weather and God Bless

We will be having a Board Meeting on June 10th and a Club Meeting on June 24th. A few Lions will be helping with the Red Cross Blood Drive at the Rehoboth Congregational Church in the Village on June 4th. To give needed Blood an Appointment is needed via the Red Cross. There is nothing easier than shaking up this refreshing cocktail, in its original form or in one of its many delightful variations.
Your summer seafood headquarters! Check our website for daily specials!
Here are some fun facts about The Margarita to help inspire your next happy hour with friends - virtual or otherwise:
1. It’s the most popular cocktail in America
Did you know that The Margarita is America’s favorite cocktail? Since Nielsen first started conducting surveys to discover bargoers’ favorite drinks in 2016, The Margarita has been the number one pick. In 2019 The Margarita edged out The Martini, The OldFashioned, The Mimosa and The Moscow Mule for the coveted first-place spot. It’s no surprise now that margaritas are a popular happy hour cocktail, so make sure to share your favorite Margarita recipe with your virtual happy hour pals for toasting together.
2. The origin of The Original Margarita
The Original Margarita was created when Dallas socialite Margarita Sames mixed her two favorite spirits, Cointreau and tequila, together with lime juice while she was vacationing in Acapulco back in 1948.
3. All you need are three ingredients
The original recipe is elegant and simple. It’s easy to make, even for beginners - no fancy ingredients required. Ingredients: 1 ounce Cointreau 2 ounces blanco tequila 1 ounce fresh lime juice Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a shaker and add ice. Shake and strain into a salt-rimmed rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.
4. It’s a highly customizable cocktail

The Original Margarita is a classic on its own - the recipe has stood the test of over 70 years’ time. However, it’s very easy to customize to your tastes or ingredients. Whether you’re feeling adventurous or craving a classic there is a Margarita for everyone. * Herbal- Add fresh lemon and basil for The Lemon Basil Margarita that tastes straight out of the garden. The balance of citrus and herbs gives this drink a light yet juicy flavor. * Spicy -The Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita combines the coolness of cucumber with a spicy burst of jalapeno for just the right amount of kick. Experiment with the amount of jalapeno to suit your own taste. * Tangy - Use slices of fresh ginger and fresh mint leaves for a unique flavor combination. The spice of ginger gives The Ginger Mint Margarita a tantalizing bite that is aromatically balanced by the refreshing mint. * Fruity - Use seasonal, colorful fruit to shake up a Margarita that is beautiful, bright and juicy. A few berries work great.

5. It’s the salt that makes it sweet
Why the salt-rimmed glass? Salt is actually present on The Margarita glass to bring out the sweet and sour flavors of the drink. Just a pinch of salt around the rim is needed to enhance the flavors in this classic, refreshing cocktail. Enjoying the Great Outdoors
Going for a nature walk in some beautiful location nearby has been the silver lining, if such there be, to the current crisis. Getting out of the house has never been more enjoyable. We’ve explored a dozen or so outdoor sites this spring, some of them new to us. In fact, we wondered why we had never visited a number of these places before. While some of these trails have been closed this spring, most are now re-opening. These days, it’s always a good idea to check the status of the place you want to visit first. As of this writing, most buildings, including restrooms, were still closed. Please follow the guidelines on maintaining physical distance, wearing masks, etc. Now that it’s summer you’ll want mosquito repellent too. In early April, both Colt State Park in Bristol and the Boyden Nature Refuge in Taunton were already getting crowded. Then on a chilly day in mid-April, we tried a couple of old favorites, peaceful Fogland Beach on a cove in Tiverton and then in Little Compton, Goosewing/South Shore beach, where we enjoyed watching the surfers in their wetsuits. The scenic drive back through Little Compton and Tiverton is always enjoyable, especially at sunset. I’m not sure what exactly going to the beach will look like this summer, but it’s not going to be the same “day at the beach” as in the past, with new regulations about beach use in effect. I’m thinking that going early on a week day might be the way to go, and not staying very long. One pleasant walking trail in Westport is the old Westport Town Farm on Drift Road, now operated as a wildlife sanctuary by the Trustees of Reservations, where you can walk through fields that overlook the Westport River. Although it was closed earlier, Mass Audubon Society has reopened Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary next to the Westport Town Beach. Also reopened are the trails at Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary nearby in Attleboro. Note that dogs are not allowed on trails at any of the Audubon properties. Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk (part of the RI Audubon Society) is a convenient location for a pleasant and mostly easy short hike through varying terrain. The trail at the Audubon Center in Bristol crosses the East Bay Bike Path, which has been very busy this spring, and continues on a boardwalk down to the bay. This short and scenic trail is open but the Nature Center building remains closed. Further afield is Demarest Lloyd State Park in South Dartmouth, though the beach there is very rocky. I’m told that the Slocum River there is a great place for kayaking. Two of our favorite spots on the South Coast are the picturesque town of Fairhaven and historic Fort Phoenix, a former Revolutionary War fort on the water, and then going on to Ned’s Point Lighthouse in Mattapoisett. We spent Mother’s Day at Borderland State Park in North Easton walking the trail that goes around the large pond. It was fairly busy that day but the park is spacious. This popular state park allows a variety of outdoor activities (fishing, riding, cycling, etc.) On Memorial Day weekend, we visited Brenton Point State Park in Newport, always a favorite seaside spot for clambering over the rocks, though there is no beach to speak of. It too was somewhat crowded, but manageable. The beautiful Blithewold Estate in Bristol, with its lovely waterfront vista, has reopened their grounds and gardens for viewing for a small fee, but you will need to make a reservation on their website before your visit. They did not hold daffodil days this April, but seeing the colorful tulip display in May more than made up for it. Last but not least, close to home are trails managed by the Rehoboth Land Trust including the Ephraim Hunt Ministerial Land on Pond Street. Rehoboth State Forest not far from town offices is a good place for a walk in the woods too. These are just some of the nearby locations where you can get out and enjoy the great outdoors – happy trails!

June Children and Family Activities
Summer Reading Challenge with Seekonk Library Imagine Your Story June 15 - August 8
It’s summer which means Seekonk Library’s Summer Reading Challenge is here! Sign your child up for the program then keep track of how much time is spent reading. There are no titles to record, or specific books to read. Simply log how much time is spent reading. Kids can read any combination of books, magazines, graphic novels, Sunday comics, eBooks, audio books or even the back of the cereal box! As we always say, read anything and everything because it all counts toward the challenge. What’s the challenge? The personal challenge is to read 15 – 20 minutes a day. Children register for the program then log their reading time online to earn virtual badges, take part in interesting activities and earn raffle tickets for a chance to win one of 20 raffle prizes. Kids are also encouraged to read to help reach the community challenge of 200,000 minutes before August 8. No interested in badges and activities? Then simplify and just log the time spent reading. Either way is fine with us! Why log reading time? The process of logging time encourages children to actively work toward the goal of 15 – 20 minutes per day. Children who log their time are more engaged in the program and can be more self-motivated to read. Children can log their reading time as often as they wish but they are not required to log their time every day. However, there are added incentives for 3 day, 7day and 30 day logging streaks. Why Summer Reading? Summer reading loss often happens when children are not actively reading during the summer months. Studies have shown that children who don’t read over the summer can lose 1-3 months of reading proficiency. Also, 9 in 10 teachers spend at least 3 weeks reteaching skills at the beginning of the school year due to summer reading loss. Know that summer reading programs are endorsed by endorsed by principals, teachers, and educators to help combat summer learning loss.
Licensed & Insured
What Parents Can Do? Parents can to help maintain reading proficiency over the summer by signing their children up for the program, encouraging them to read, and by having their children log their reading time regularly. Parents sign children up and the library will engage and motivate them! Remember that the goal of 15 – 20 minutes per day increases fluency and expands children’s vocabulary, comprehension and knowledge. What Seekonk Library will do: The library will engage kids with great incentives including virtual badges, interesting activities, raffle prizes and even lawn flamingos to keep interest high in reading and to engage children all summer long. Working together we can help combat summer reading loss all while having a great time. It’s free to participate and registering for the program is easy. Sign up with your SAILS Library card at seekonkpl.org/kids. Don’t have a SAILS card? Contact us at childrens@seekonkpl.org Sign up, read, log time. Combat summer learning loss with Seekonk Library’s summer reading program for children! Imagine Your Story is sponsored by Seekonk Public Library, CSLP, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Seekonk Library has resources that support summer leisure reading. Need assistance? Email the Youth Services Librarians at childrens@seekonkpl.org
Get Flamingoed!
How? It’s simple! Sign your child up for the “Imagine Your Story” summer reading program. After logging 7 hours of time spent reading, your child will earn their very own lawn flamingo. Then the fun really begins! Each child will be asked to decorate their flamingo using their imagination and supplies around the house. Will they imagine their Flamingo as a different animal like a cat or a tiger? Or will they turn their flamingo into a unicorn or maybe a superhero with a cape? The sky’s the limit because they can decorate to their heart’s content. Once decorated, kids will place their flamingo on their front lawn for everyone to see. Let’s fill the town with flamingos! If your child starts reading on June 15 and logs just 15 minutes a day, they’ll earn their flamingo by mid-July! Reading more? They’ll earn their flamingo sooner. Questions? childrens@seekonkpl.org

@SeekonKindness: Celebrating Acts of Kindness During COVID-19
The Friends of the Seekonk Public Library and Seekonk Library Trust are sponsoring a project called @SeekonKindness. “Our goal is to pull together the amazing ways in which acts of kindness are strengthening community during this difficult time,” said Moe Messier President of the Seekonk Public Library Friends. “These random or organized acts of kindness, like the library, are the heart of our community.” The @SeekonKindness project begins with a social media presence to chronicle community acts of kindness and will continue to build upon those actions moving forward. It starts with a Facebook page to aggregate and highlight stories about acts of kindness from existing community Facebook pages, or original posts. For example, pictures, stories, videos or events from Konk Konnect, Seekonk Police Department, Seekonk Public Schools, Human Services, or an act of kindness submitted from an individual in town. Seekonk, Massachusetts and the country are living through an unprecedented time. Not since the Great Depression has the nation faced a challenge that knows no boundaries. The COVID-19 pandemic impacts all community members—regardless of race, religion, economic status, beliefs. In these times of great challenge, citizens unite as a community to extend a hand to neighbors, friends and family. During this “great separation,” acts of kindness brings the community together. “While many people are scared about the short and long-term effects of the coronavirus, many also recognize this is the best time to help others. @SeekonKindness is a way for us to capture what we, as a community, are doing to help each other during the coronavirus,” says Anne Miller, Chairperson of the Seekonk Library Trust. “We need to celebrate kindness in a time of great duress.” “The library is a welcoming place for all,” says Mr. Messier, “and people really miss not going there. We hope sharing these acts of kindness will help people feel connected to each other even though they can’t be together.” If you know of an act of kindness that you would like to share, please visit @SeekonKindness on Facebook and share your photo, video, story or event. These actions are what define Seekonk as a community. They may be an act of kindness for one person or many, organized or informal, simple or more complex. For example, they may include: • Making sure the homebound get food • Organizing a birthday parade of cars for a 6 -year -old • Writing messages of hope • Playing music for the neighborhood to enjoy • Applauding health care workers and other first responders Help tell the story of the coronavirus and how Seekonk responded to this terrible crisis with kindness to each other. Share an act of kindness that you know about on the @SeekonKindness page.

News and Notes from Blanding Library By Leslie Patterson
Curbside Pickup
The Blanding Library is still closed to the public, but staff are now providing curbside delivery to patrons from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. You can request books and other items from the Rehoboth library only, by either calling the library or requesting items through the SAILS online catalog (www.sailsinc. org). Although it is possible to place hold requests for items from other libraries, those books will not arrive until our delivery service resumes operation, on a date to be determined later. The library will notify you when the Blanding items are ready for pickup and then you will need to call (508-252-4236) when you arrive at the library. Library staff will either leave the books outside by the door or place items in your car trunk, depending on the weather. At this writing, the library is still working out the details about the next phase of library re-opening. Due dates for materials have been automatically extended. Any overdue fines accrued during this time of closure will be waived. Expiration dates on library cards will be extended. While the physical library is still closed to the public, the library’s online services are available anytime from www.sailsinc.org, as well as the Overdrive and Libby eBook apps. So now is a good time to download e-books; you can find out more on the SAILS site.
Online Learning & Activities for Kids
The Blanding’s online Middle Grade Book Club is starting in June. Register before June 13 to get the book list and participate in an introductory meeting. Support with obtaining middle school summer reading materials will also be provided. Recommended for kids entering third to seventh grade. There will be an online introductory meeting on June 13 for parents and kids. Register your child by contacting mmaynard@sailsinc.org with your name, your child’s name, a phone number and parent email, and the email your child will be using for online components of the book club. While we all wish we could have a full slate of summer programs as usual, there will be some online entertainment for children coming up soon. The Blanding staff are currently planning a series of virtual programs for children this summer, which will include story hours, a puppet show, readings by children’s authors, and story walks. More information will be available soon on the library’s calendar page on www.blandinglibrary.net and on Facebook.

Local Church News Seekonk Churches Endure Despite Coronavirus
By Joe Siegel Churches have been adversely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. With their doors closed for nearly two months, many clergy have been conducting virtual services for their parishioners. “We are doing fine,” said Christopher Pfeffer, Executive Director of Faith Christian Center. “Our school (Seekonk Christian Academy) is doing distance learning and the church has brought its’ services online,” Pfeffer continued. “We don’t know when we will be able to have services on campus with people in the seats, but are planning some logistical things when we know more from our government leaders.” Pfeffer said donations continue to come in and the church is doing what they can to help members of the community during very tough times. “Recently we felt the need to give out over 250 care bags to our immediate neighbors and some Seniors living in Seekonk. That was well received,” Pfeffer added. Seekonk Congregational Church has been airing weekly services on YouTube and Facebook. “We record in the sanctuary with only our Senior Minister, Reverend Joy Utter, and a camera operator (practicing social distancing),” said Maria Tavares, the church’s office administrator. “Our Choir Director/Organist comes in at a different time to record playing the hymns for that service. We also have others reading scripture from home and all of these are sent to our Audio/Video Magician electronically, who then creates the service. Reverend Marilyn Ricci, who is responsible for the Confirmation program, has been reaching out to the 9th grade students mostly by email and phone. The Church Council, Trustees, and other Boards and Committees are meeting via Zoom. Tavares said the time for reopening is still undetermined: “Since our members come from over 40 different zip codes, we will open when the Governors of Rhode Island and Massachusetts lift the ban on gatherings and we will follow all the guidelines.”

Rehoboth Baptist Church Opens for Services
On May 24th Rehoboth Baptist Church gathered for our Lord’s Service at 10:30 A.M., the first since closing on March 15th because of the COVID-19 guidelines. That event was greatly longed for by our congregation. Masked and creatively seated, 47 attended. If more had attended, the plan was to go outside for the service. Following the service, the sanctuary was emptied from the rear to the grassy and parking areas, where greetings and conversation went on for about 45 minutes. Such was the love and joy of being together once again, expressed face to face, while practicing physical distancing, not social distancing. In addition, for the present at least, we will meet on Sundays at 10:30 AM and Wednesdays at 7 PM for prayer. Rehoboth Baptist Church is located on Route 118, two miles south of the Route 44 intersection. Visit our website for current information about our services or to contact the pastor or elder. www.RehobothBaptistChurch.org.

Beckwith Believers
It was a successful season this year for the Beckwith Believers Basketball team. The team consisted of 36 members so, in true unified fashion, the team decided to split into the Blue team and the White team to give players more playing time. While one team played they were cheered on by the other team. Playing in five games, the players showed growth and sportsmanship. This year we also had a very successful Faculty game. Many staff members played not against but with our Believers. This was definitely the highlight of the season. Thank you not only to our fans, families, and staff members but a special thanks to our players. Best of luck to our 8th grade players and here’s to another successful year in 2021! 8th graders: Caroline Corvi, Sydney Pestana, Kaelyn Whitaker, Nevaeh Sullivan, Tim Zibrida, Samantha Serpa, Lorelei Kellum, Jacob Rebelo, Nathan Mackenzie, Brodie Sammis, Ethan Sammis, Sophie Darling, Mason Ferreira, Riley D’Alessio, William Kendall, Ava Wasylow, Laura DeGirolamo, Maddie Gomes, Gianna Viola, Elaina Flood.
Nurse’s Notes
To parents of 6th grade students: Pursuant to Massachusetts Department of Health regulations students entering 7th grade in the fall for school year 2010-2021 must submit a current physical dated after August 2019 as well as proof of having received the Tdap booster and the 2nd Varicella (Chicken Pox) booster. Without this proper medical documentation, your child will be subject to exclusion from school. Documentation must be sent to the school nurse before the first day of school. As your children have their annual physicals/check-ups with their pediatricians during school closure, please email the physical including immunizations to Mrs. Mondor, RN at cmondor@ drregional.org so their school health records may be updated. Please reach out to Mrs. Mondor to let her know when such documentation will be sent in and if your child will be seeing his/ her pediatrician over the summer.

Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony
One of the best days of each year is the one on which we hold the Beckwith Promotion Ceremony. We take time to celebrate the growth our students have made while having one last gathering together. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis we are sadly unable to celebrate like we traditionally do. However, I am proud to announce that we are going to have a non-traditional celebration of our 8th grade students. Mark your calendars for Thursday, June 18th. We will be having a rolling parade starting at the high school and ending at Beckwith with an acknowledgement of all our 8th grade students. Eighth grade students and parents please watch for more details and instructions. We are eagerly looking forward to celebrating with everyone and seeing your smiling faces. Our students have worked incredibly hard and deserve the upcoming celebration.

Principal’s Message
First and foremost before I start the Principal’s Message, I want to say that I am honored and humbled to be the principal of Dorothy L Beckwith Middle School. I am lucky to have Residential & Commercial learned under Joseph Pirraglia, Jr., a true educational visionary, and I hope to continue with Complete Services his legacy. Thank you, everyone, for your kind messages and support. Beckwith is a special place filled with amazing professionals. And without further ado onto the May message! I come from a large family. I have a lot of “aunts and uncles” that are really defined as distant cousins (but who really understands what a first cousin twice removed is?). ThereFully Insured • Free Estimates fore in the Shea/Taylor family everyone is simply reduced to an aunt and uncle. Growing up it was not far-fetched that on a Sunday night five to ten families were battling out a Serving RI & MA Trivial Pursuit match after a cookout. In my family, cookouts were just an excuse to get together in order to organize some version of a group game. Gameplay gave me a sense of confidence, comradery, and accomplishment. These are my happiest memories as a Quality Work At Reasonable Prices child, especially throughout my middle school years. As an avid podcast listener I recently heard professional game master Timm Woods talk about the importance of gameplay amongst peers and family. I followed up by reading about him in numerous articles and therefore reached out to him for advice. He was kind enough to share with me his doctoral thesis “ANYTHING CAN BE ATTEMPTED: TABLETOP ROLE-PLAYING GAMES AS LEARNING AND PEDAGOGY”. Although his thesis focuses on the positive impact gameplay can have on the classroom, there are many take-aways related to everyday life. Gameplay according to Mr. Woods leads to engagement, management, economics, computing, and critical thinking. This is just a quick massive synthesis of an extremely well-thought-out dissertation. If you want to learn more please look into his website at https://www.timmwoods.com. You might even be inspired to take on a D&D quest. Lawn Cutting / Trimming Playing games in the middle school years is critical. This is a Yard Cleanups • Bobcat Services time of social and emotional growth, all skills that are reinforced in gameplay. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, I cannot stop thinking Small Demo Jobs about the struggles that our Beckwith students are experiencing in Free Estimates forced seclusion. I believe a solution to this problem is focusing on Landmaint2018@gmail.com playing games together as a cohesive unit. We all can learn quick mental math with a game of Cribbage, test your eyesight with Spot It, become a spy with Code Names, or learn to set up an elaborate game that no one has ever actually ever played, Mousetrap. These are just a few games that can bring families together for a few hours and build strong memories for our middle school students. Even today in my “adult life” I still play trivia with a group of friends, and although we are inconsistent with our results, we are never inconsistent with our laughter and enjoyment of each other’s company. Most likely right now we are not able to play games with our extended families, friends, and gameplay partners, however, I challenge you and your family to play games, share stories, laugh and make happy memories (unless you are playing Monopoly, that always ends with the board being flipped over). Bristol Aggie Delivers Face Shields to Frontline Workers at St. Luke’s Hospital
Bristol County Agricultural High School’s 3D printer has been hard at work making face shields for frontline workers. This week, the school was able to deliver almost 200 face shields to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. In early March, Bristol Aggie acquired the digital file needed to create the masks on the school’s 3D printer. Since then, the file and product has been tweaked and refined to create a product that is more comfortable, more economical and quicker to manufacture. Once the visor is complete, a plastic shield is added. The face shield is another layer of protection that covers the medical professional’s face while still being able to wear a mask underneath. When the school’s doors closed to students and teachers back in March, the janitors, foremen and watchpersons, stepped up to the challenge of keeping the 230 acre working farm and school running. In addition to sanitizing the school, growing crops and caring for animals ranging from horses to mice, these men and women also learned how to run the 3D printer. It has been Aggie’s frontline workers that allow the mask manufacturing to continue around the clock. Bristol Aggie will continue to disperse Personal Protective Equipment to area hospitals as they are produced.

Dighton-Rehoboth Grads Look Ahead
By Joe Siegel Valedictorian Emerson Maccarone and Salutatorian Richard Curtis are graduating at the top of their class from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. “I was definitely happy that all my hard work had paid off,” said Maccarone on learning about the honor. Maccarone played soccer for three years and was Captain of the Track and Field team, where she broke two school records in the 800 meter and 1000 meter dash. In addition, Maccarone was a member of DECA, the school’s business club and traveled to Florida to compete in the Apparel Accessories/Marketing category after winning a state competition. “(DECA) was a big part of my (high school experience) because it kind of opens me up to something totally different,” said Maccarone, who plans to study physics at Villanova University in the fall. Valedictorian Emerson Maccarone praised the teachers at DightonRehoboth for helping the seniors with their AP exams Maccarone while separated due to the coronavirus pandemic. “They gave us a lot of practice and were really able to alter their plans,” Maccarone explained. “As a senior class, we’ve definitely come together during these times.” Curtis credits his teachers and his classmates for his status as Salutatorian. “I couldn’t have done it without all the support from everybody else,” Curtis said. “They were all very kind and supportive of me.” Curtis was a member of the school’s Cross Country team, the Winter Track team, the Spring Track team, the Math team, as well as the National Honor Society. Curtis has been accepted at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he plans to study mathematics. However, he is also on the “waitlist” at Harvard, which is his first choice. Curtis advises next year’s seniors to respect everyone around them. “Everybody will help each other,” Curtis added. “It’s a group effort really. I think respecting Now each other and having that good Enrolling connection between you and your classmates and your teachers” is 2020-2021! most important. Maccarone enjoyed spending Salutatorian Richard Curtis time with her classmates at events like tailgate parties before school football games. She encourages the senior class of 2021 to attend as many school events as they can. “That passion for school spirit really brought us together,” Maccarone said of her class. “Just being together and doing these things together I think really made my senior year.”

Shoutout to 2020 Seniors! Seekonk High Grads Say Goodbye By Joe Siegel
Are you looking for a Great Cleaning Person? Experienced, Dependable, Affordable Insured References available Photo courtesy of Tony Gugliotta. In the photo (all seniors) Ben Pope is filming the goodbye message of Eli Morrison as Grace MacDonald looks on from a safe distance. Knowing their graduation ceremony will not be held due to the coronavirus pandemic, the senior class of Seekonk High School opted to record their own farewell messages on May 8 and 9. “More than a third of the seniors participated either by showing up in person, wearing a mask and adhering to social distancing guidelines, or sending in a video on their own,” said Tony Gugliotta, who teaches video production. The idea for the video originated with Senior Ryan Pelletier and his friends, who wanted to say goodbye to their classmates and the school before they all go their separate ways. A section of the school’s video yearbook always includes a few students wishing their classmates well and saying goodbye, Gugliotta said, noting this year was different: “The seniors really wanted to do something that was open to the entire class.” Gugliotta believes the video will probably be posted online, either at the end of the month or before the date of graduation in June. “All of the seniors that came were extremely happy that we held this event and gave them that last opportunity, which we all know meant a lot to them,” Pelletier explained. “The students that helped make the video were so enthusiastic, and their excitement really made me feel like we were doing something super special,” Gugliotta added.

Members of Seekonk High School’s Class of 2020 will be marching to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” a month later than usual. Last week, the State issued guidelines for high school graduations to be held outdoors after July 19. Principal William Whalen said the graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, July 24 at 6:30 pm on the school’s football field. The rain date is Saturday, July 25. However, due to the fears of spreading COVID-19, attendance will be limited to graduates and their immediate family members only. Families must sign up in advance of the graduation and only those who have preregistered may attend. Children under the age of 5, older adults and those with vulnerable health conditions should be discouraged from attending. In addition: • Attendees who are not part of the same immediate household must be seated at least 6 feet apart. • Members of the same immediate household are permitted to sit together and less than 6 feet apart. • If there is fixed seating, rows should be blocked off and kept empty to allow for sufficient distancing between rows. • Graduates must be seated 6 feet apart. • All attendees must wear face coverings before, during and after the ceremony. The only exceptions are when a person is unable to wear a face covering or mask because of a medical or other disabling condition. Speakers may remove masks during their remarks. • Any person who refuses to wear a face covering or mask without a valid justification may be denied entry.

SPOTLIGHT ON YOUTH SPORTS A Message from Rehoboth Youth Baseball Softball Association Dear RYBSA Community, We want to provide you with an update based on the decisions by the Governor and his team. We’re optimistic that we will be able to play baseball and softball in Rehoboth this summer. The safety of all the kids and families is our number one priority. Please refer to the update below and feel free to reach out to any member of the board of directors with any questions. We should be able to start holding practices during phase II of the MA plan. The earliest that phase II will start is Monday, June 8 or plan would be to start practices starting on June 15th in order for us to be fully prepared and to ensure following all state and local guidelines. Registration will be open up until June 7, 2020. Please feel free to register your player. http://www.rybsaonline.com. We may have to limit additional registrations we can take by division to make manageable rosters and will use first come, first served if necessary. Phase II will last a minimum of 3 weeks which means we will hold practices from 6/15/20 to 7/5/20. Phase III will start at the earliest on June 29. This is when we would be allowed to have games. Currently, we would start games on July 6th and anticipate playing a 6 week season with 2 games per week. Possibly less games for younger divisions. This will be a slightly shortened season. We are doing our best to fit in as many games as possible. Again, this is all contingent on each phase taking only 3 weeks We will hold coaches meetings in the next week or two via Zoom by division. If you signed up to coach, please look for an invite soon. We are committed to making sure that we comply with or exceed the safety standards being set by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. While all of the details are not clear yet, it is likely that players will need to wear masks when they are NOT on the field. These masks will be provided by RYBSA to all players and coaches. IN MEMORIAM Pat Knowles Pat Knowles, born Caroline Patten Walker, age 81, died on May 6, 20 days short of her 82nd birthday. Known as Pat, and Mimi to her grandchildren, she was born in 1938 to Caroline M. Walker and William B. Walker of Northborough. She attended Northfield School in Northfield, Mass., spent summers as a camp counselor at Camp Marlyn and graduated from Colby College in Maine with a Bachelor of Arts in History. At Colby she met the love of her life, Jonathan “Jock” Knowles after they both lost the class officer Pat Knowles elections. After graduation she taught in Northborough Public Schools until her marriage in December of 1960. She and Jock moved to Key West and Washington, D.C. during their early years in the Naval Reserve and then to Seekonk and finally Rehoboth, Jock’s hometown. They propagated out of the Knowles’ family farm house and built their growing family’s current home in 1968. Pat was integrated into the Rehoboth and Providence, R.I. communities with her volunteer work at Rehoboth polling locations, as a member of the Junior League, Rehoboth Garden Club (former president) and its scholarship committee, Bethany Home board chairwoman for 17 years, and a longtime congregant at St. Martin’s
Church where she was previously a member of the altar guild and choir. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and actively involved in the historical site, The Stephen Hopkins House, as treasurer. Her community involvement evolved with her children’s schools and activities such as Lincoln School in Providence, where her daughters attended. She and Jock traveled multiple times to Scotland, her father’s origin, Bermuda and recently, St. Kitt’s with friends. The couple were actively and philanthropically involved with Colby College, visiting frequently and establishing a scholarship in their late daughter Callie Clapp’s name. Her friends remember her as a tennis player, golfer, swimmer as a member of Agawam Hunt, a loyal friend and a religious book club attendee. Pat and the family summers in Nonquitt, Mass. and Sunapee, N.H. when the children were young. Later the family regularly gathered at their new “camp” in Freeman Township, Maine. Pat was previously a substitute teacher for Rehoboth Public Schools and had various retail jobs in the area at R.W. Richins, M’s and Teapots & Tassels, but her primary occupation was that of mother and homemaker. She was the master of logistics, packing her family of six for weekend ski trips in the winter and making picnic baskets for her kids and many others for the beach in summer. She was unflappable, kind, strict, quick-witted, and egregiously terrible with technology. She did not entertain gossip, but loved to talk about things and ideas, especially when it came to literature. She read at lightning speed and at the time of her passing had hundreds of books on her Kindle, the one technology she was determined to adopt and master. As a grandmother, Pat was renamed “Mimi” and obliged her grandchildren by project managing hermit crab habitats, blueberry pies and proper table setting technique and bed making. Mimi never forgot a birthday and signed her cards to her clan with a simple, but loving “xoxo.” Pat was the beloved wife of Jonathan R. Knowles. She was the mother of Jonathan R. Knowles Jr. and wife Laura M. Briggs, Amelia K. Chafee and husband Mark H. Chafee, son-in-law William N. Clapp, and Joseph E. Paiva - General Manager Odilia Paiva - Assistant Manager Sarah K. Eisenklam and husband David M. Eisenklam. She is preceded in death by her daughter Caroline K. Clapp. She was the cherished grandmother of Amelia H. Chafee, Walker B. Chafee, Bernard K. Clapp, Caroline S. Clapp, Ainsley A. Clapp, Eleanor C. Eisenklam, Abigail W. Eisenklam and Jonathan D. Eisenklam. Interment will be private and a service will be held at a later date. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to: St. Martin’s Church, The Caroline “Callie” Knowles Clapp ’89 Memorial Fund Hours of Operation: at Colby College, Bethany Home, the The 9-5 Monday Callie Knowles Clapp ‘85 Go Global Fund through Friday at Lincoln School, and the Rehoboth Garden Club.
