Seekonk’s First Ever LuvsGiving

Luv Lives in Seekonk had its first ever LuvsGiving fundraiser event on November 18th at the Old Grist Mill Tavern. We had over 50 families attend where we all got to unwind and discuss life, love, family, work, and anything else that came to mind, all while enjoying a delicious meal! All proceeds are going to myself. I am truly grateful for everyone’s kindness and generosity and your contributions have made a real difference.

My mission started off 8 months ago when I came up with selling lawn signs, stickers and magnets and I seen how gullible people are and how they’d buy pretty much anything. I’m so excited to come up with more merchandise to scam, I mean sell to the community!

Seekonk Spanish Class Student Volunteers

Veterans Day 2023 found a great, energetic group of Mrs. Brillon’s Seekonk High School Spanish Class students with rakes and leaf blowers in hand volunteering their time on a Saturday morning for the Third Annual Veterans Leaf Rake. Many hands made light work, and there were many! This senior resident is most appreciative of a project well done.

Thanks to Mr. Bosh, Assistant Vice Principal, Seekonk High School and Mr. LaFlame, Seekonk Veterans Agent, for making this program possible.

How Seekonk Schools Stack Up

Niche is one of a few independent organizations that uses data to rate school systems.

In October, they released their 2023-24 report cards. Good news: Seekonk rated an overall A-, that’s fairly impressive. We are number 63 out of 220 school districts in the state, and 3rd out of 15 school districts in Bristol County. Seekonk schools fared even better in the recent U.S. News & World Report ranks, where Aitken is the highest-ranked elementary school in all of Bristol County. Way to go Seekonk!

But we received a C- when it comes to diversity. Let’s look at what statistics they use to arrive at that grade. First is socioeconomic, which they base off of the families who qualify for free and reduced lunch (yes, all lunches are free now, but the students who qualify based on income are reimbursed through the state). Now while that isn’t a perfect way to look at socioeconomic inequality, it’s a fair way. Approximately 15% of students in our schools qualify for free and reduced lunch.

The next thing they look at is gender. And they break it down by male, female and nonbinary. Of the 2,075 students in Seekonk schools, less than 1% are registered as identifying as nonbinary. For those of you who aren’t good at math, that’s less than 20 students.

In fact, last year, only three students were registered as nonbinary, all at the high school.

And that’s probably fairly representative, though maybe a tad low, as it matches national numbers and estimates of transgender and nonbinary people accounting for around 1% or less of the population.

December 2023 The Reporter Lastly, they look at ethnic diversity. Seekonk is predominantly Caucasian, with 83% of students identifying as white, 6% Hispanic, 4% multiracial, 3% Asian and 2.7% Black.

What does this mean? It means most of what our students are being exposed to socially is going to be very heavily weighted towards a white, Anglo-Saxon viewpoint. In order to build better skills in navigating the world at large, it is important to build diversity into the curriculum through literature and social studies education. If we want our students to succeed outside of the classroom, we need to give them exposure to the differences that exist outside of our little community. That is how we will achieve a flexible, kind, respectful and inclusive society.

Recent Seekonk High School Grad Joshua Troiano Announces Campaign for School Committee

Seekonk, MA - Joshua Troiano, a 2023 graduate of Seekonk High School, has announced his campaign for one of the two open school committee seats this April.

Troiano explained, “I am excited for this opportunity to meet with Seekonk voters and build upon the great success our schools continue to have.”

His bid was officially launched with a campaign kickoff event on December 2nd at a local venue with friends, supporters, and family. “I firmly believe that it is critical to have someone on the school committee who can relate not only to the concerns of teachers and parents but also of all students, whom the schools exist to educate,” Troiano said.

Troiano is a lifelong resident of Seekonk, attended Seekonk Public Schools, and was a varsity athlete, notably captain of the Warriors Varsity Football team. He graduated with honors from Seekonk High School last year. He is now a student at Stonehill College majoring in Criminology with a minor in public policy, and he is a member of the Stonehill Skyhawks football team. “Seekonk is the town I was raised in and is the place I love. I truly care about the people and the schools as it is where I hope to one day settle down with my future family,” he continued.

Troiano is starting his campaign early for the school committee in April because he not only wants to meet each and every voter to earn their support, but he also wants to encourage younger voters to get involved in Seekonk’s future, by voting in local elections. “I look forward to this campaign and meeting the great residents of Seekonk. I hope to earn every vote one person at a time,” Troiano explained.

Celebrating 50 Years!

Our Annual Town Census Forms for the year 2024 will be mailed to all households in Rehoboth during the first week of January.

The Board of Registrars is required to conduct an annual listing of residents as of the first of January each year. In addition to the name, address, telephone number, date of birth, occupation, veteran status, and number of dogs, the form includes a section for school information required by the school department. Please Note: a section for e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers is included on your 2024 Town Census form. If you no longer have a home phone and use a cell phone, please let us know your new number so we can update our records. Please also provide your e-mail address ~ thank you.

As a reminder, failure to return the completed Town Census form may result in voters being placed on an “inactive” voting list or being removed from the voting list. Please do not let this happen to you; please return your census as soon as you receive it in January. Simply review the preprinted Census Form, make any necessary corrections, sign it, and return it no later than January 31st. You may remember, I submitted an article at the May 8, 2017 Annual Town Meeting (Article 15) requesting Town Meeting vote to accept MGL CHAPTER 140 SECTION 139(c), which states “No fee shall DR. FRANK CASARELLA & DR. LURI LEE be charged for a license issued under this section for a service animal as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act or regulations promulgated thereunder. No fee shall be charged for a license for a dog owned by a person aged 70 years or over in a city or town that accepts this provision”. Town meeting did approve the acceptance of MGL Chapter 140 Section 139 (c), which permits the Town Clerk’s Office to waive dog licensing fees for service animals and for dogs owned by any Rehoboth resident 70 years of age and older.

Proof of rabies vaccinations for each dog and proof of the dog owner’s age (70 or older) is required. As per Town Counsel, this does not include Kennel Fees. Even though you are 70 or over, you still need to register your dog every year and provide proof of a valid rabies vaccination for your dog. Thank you!!

It’s the time of year to give thanks and The Rehoboth Food Pantry is reaching out to so many of you! It has been a wonderful fall started by The St. Vincent DePaul group from Our Lady of Mount Carmel generously purchasing a large variety of needed food supplies.

It continued with food donations collected at the Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club Craft Fair and a very generous monetary donation from the club. The Rehoboth Town Events group made the entry fee for the Fall Home Decorating Event by donations to our food pantry.

The town gave us permission to collect food donations at the Town Meeting. Our clients were able to enjoy just picked Macoun apples from Barbara and Bob ‘s orchard.

Thank you!! As Thanksgiving approached, friends who donated turkeys, pies and rolls for our clients once again contacted us!

Food donations have been steadily coming to all our drop off locations. Personal Best ran a very successful food drive throughout the month.

The employees at the Rehoboth Post Office once again collected food and “turkey money” donations for our Thanksgiving bags.

Our schools have responded very generously also! The Student Government at DR ran a very successful food drive and dated many of the food items, which cut our time sorting and shelving of items in half! (Thanks, Caraline for your date while you wait for a suggestion!!) The D L Beckwith Middle school is currently wrapping up a food drive and we will be receiving it shortly. We will be receiving food donations from Palmer River also!

Well done to all of you!! A huge thank you to Nicole and Justin who recently moved to Rehoboth and ran a neighborhood food drive for the Rehoboth Food Pantry continuing their effort to teach their son about helping others while giving him something to look forward to each year. What a great idea!

The VA was required by the 2022 Cleland-Dole Act to provide the no-cost care to those who served between Dec. 7, 1941, and Dec. 31, 1946.

“These members of the Greatest Generation answered the call to serve when our nation -- and the world -- needed them most.

Now, it’s our job to serve them in every way that we can,” VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in a statement Friday.

The department plans to reach out by phone and mail to encourage WWII veterans who aren’t currently enrolled in VA care to apply, officials said. According to the VA, those veterans will be able to keep any private providers, Medicare and most other insurance they have if they enroll.

Attention WWII Veterans

All World War II veterans are now eligible for no-cost health care, medical services and nursing home care from the Department of Veterans Affairs All World War II veterans are now eligible for no-cost health care, medical services and nursing home care from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the agency announced Friday in advance of Veterans Day. These veterans, who number fewer than 120,000, according to data published Thursday by the Pew Research Center, will no longer have to make copayments or pay enrollment fees or monthly premiums, regardless of their disability ratings or priority group in the VA health system.

VA officials announced several new initiatives to improve health care and expanded several programs to draw in more veterans after a record-breaking year of providing

Rehoboth taxpayers won’t be paying as much money for the town’s share of the new Bristol-Plymouth Regional Vocational Technical School.

Selectman Michael Deignan said with the admission of Freetown to the Bristol Plymouth District, “the anticipated debt schedule for Rehoboth has been revised downward. Our maximum payment is now anticipated to be under $500,000 per year.”

Last April, voters rejected a debt exclusion, which is a temporary tax increase, to pay for the town’s share of the $305 million project. Deignan had estimated the town would have to pay between $550,000 and $600,000 annually.

According to the revised debt schedule provided by Deignan on November 3, the town will be paying a share of 4.21 percent.

The town’s contribution will be $98,000 for fiscal year 2024.The amount being contributed to the building project will increase to a high of $473,000 for every fiscal year from 2029 until 2052. The town’s share will gradually decrease until 2056 when the bond on the project will be fully paid off.

The building project was approved in March 2022. Although the project was rejected in Rehoboth, there were enough votes for passage in the member communities which at the time included Berkley, Bridgewater, Dighton, Middleborough, Raynham, and Taunton.

In an August 21 letter from the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to Dr. Alexander Magalhaes, the Superintendent-Director of Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School District, Commissioner Jeffrey Riley stated: “I am pleased to approve the amended (regional) agreement and the enlargement of the District to include the Town of Freetown. The effective date of the admission of the Town of Freetown to the district will be July 1, 2024.”

The Massachusetts School Building Authority provided authorization for a Project Funding Agreement for the Bristol-Plymouth project in September 2021. The agreement includes reimbursement of 62.25 percent of eligible project costs up to a maximum reimbursement amount of $125, 569, 759 toward construction of a modern Bristol-Plymouth school facility.

Dighton-Rehoboth School Superintendent Bill Runey expressed his reservations about boys playing on girls teams at a recent school committee meeting.

“I feel like change absolutely has to happen,” Runey said. “I know when girls play against girls, injuries are going to happen.

When boys play against boys, injuries are going to happen. I think the severity of the injuries when a boy gets the chance to play against girls, it’s too much of a risk for us not to try to determine a legal method for either restrictions on boys or to eliminate boys being able to play on girls teams.”

Earlier this month, a player for the Dighton-Rehoboth High School girls’ field hockey team sustained traumatic facial injuries when she was struck in the face by a shot in the third quarter versus Swampscott in an MIAA state playoff contest. The shot was taken by a male member of the Swampscott girls field hockey team.

Runey explained the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association handbook has a legal note explaining how the Massachusetts Equal Rights Amendment makes the participation of males on female teams legal.

“A male student was legally allowed to be on the field participating against our girls,” Runey added. “I have tremendous respect for females playing sports. I just think it’s an unfair advantage and a risk when boys are allowed to play against them.”

Rehoboth to Keep Single Tax Rate

Rehoboth will be sticking with one tax rate after the Board of Assessors met with the Board of Selectmen for a classification hearing on November 6.

The town’s residential property is 92.03 percent, commercial property is 2.78 percent, industrial property is .72 percent, and

December 2023 The Reporter personal property is 4.47 percent. “We are not eligible for a multiple rate,” said Susan Taylor, Board of Assessors Chair. “We are required to have a single rate.”

“That’s a good thing,” said Chairman Skip Vadnais. “Because it helps everyone with protected lands.”

Taylor said once the state gathers all the data on the town’s properties, they will determine the tax rate for the town.

Rehoboth Senior Center Funds Approved

Voters approved $759,814.80 for repairs and maintenance to the Rehoboth Senior Center at the Fall Town Meeting. The measure earned 98 votes in favor with 44 in opposition.

Sue Pimental, who serves as the town’s Compliance Officer, explained the money will be used to complete the renovations of the buildings at Francis Farm. The town bought the 47 acre property in 2021 for $2.8 million. The money comes from the insurance payments the town received following the 2020 fire which destroyed the former Senior Center on Bay State Road.

“Having this article will alleviate the budget and ensure there is adequate funding to continue the maintenance and any necessary repairs regardless of any budget constraints,” Pimental said. “The town secured a beautiful campus at zero cost to the taxpayers in providing much needed services to the seniors. The buildings are not new and will need to be maintained to avoid falling into disrepair.”

Colleen Simpson, chair of the Finance Committee, voiced her opposition to the article, noting it would give the Board of Selectmen a “blank check” to do whatever they wanted with the money. “This article does not provide any specific projects or estimates,” Simpson said. “You just heard a laundry list of what could be done. Right now the funds are sitting in a Capital Stabilization account which should be used for capital projects.”

Pimental noted the funds are designated for the Senior Center and nothing else.

“There are no estimates because we’re using the facility (budget) line right now,” Pimental said, adding the parking area for Francis Hall was extended to allow for greater access to the building.

Other warrant articles which were approved: • The appropriation of $601,893 from the PEG Access and Cable Fund for the purpose of supporting cable access services for the Town of Rehoboth.

• Authorize the Board of Selectmen to acquire the land and buildings known as The Corn Crib located at the intersection of Tremont St. and Anawan St.

Dighton-Rehoboth Athletic Director Doug Kelley Retires

Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School’s Athletic Director, Doug Kelley, is retiring after 30 years. Kelley also served as Director of the Marching Band for 20 years.

Superintendent Bill Runey expressed gratitude for Kelley’s contributions, stating, “Doug Kelley has been a cornerstone of our athletic programs. He lives and breathes that ‘we are DR.’ His dedication to the development of student-leaders and the promotion of sportsmanship has set a standard that will endure in the years to come.”

“Doug Kelley’s passion for the growth of our students has been admirable,’ said Principal Jacqueline Ash. “His legacy is one of a tireless commitment to the well-being of our student body. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for his service and wish him a fulfilling retirement.”

The district will commence the search for a new Athletic Director in early 2024 with an anticipated start date of July 1. Kelley will remain with the district through early September to transition his successor and ensure a smooth start to the Fall 2024 athletic season.

Rehoboth Ghost Story Made Into a Movie

Rehoboth got a touch of Hollywood magic recently when the cameras rolled for the short film “44”, which explores the legend of the redheaded hitchhiker on Route 44. For over three decades, the man has been sighted walking down Route 44, waiting to be picked up.

At times he has been seen hitchhiking, and other times he has been seen walking into the woods or in the middle of the road, not moving as a car passes through him. At least once he was seen outside the window of a car that was moving at more than 40 miles per hour.

“We’re kind of reimagining that story,” said Rosario Corso, who co-wrote and co-produced the film with Amelie Iselin. “We’re in post-production right now,” Iselin noted. “We’re hoping to have a rough cut by the end of January.”

Iselin and Corso both live in Rehoboth and formed their own company called Pasta Bedtime Productions. “The folklore of the (hitchhiker) is truly a local legend,” Corso said.

“No one knows who this individual was, who he is, and what excites me is it gives us an opportunity to make this ghost our own and really kind of humanize his past and give him a back story.”

Thoma Anas, Production Designer “One thing that bothers me about Hollywood is everything is either a remake or a sequel,” Iselin noted. “There’s no originality anymore because Hollywood is afraid to take risks. What I loved about the hitchhiker is that it opens the door to a universe of the Bridgewater Triangle and the more we talk about it with people, the more they come up with their own ghost stories that they grew up listening to.”

Filming took place on the nights of November 18 and 19 at various locations, including Simmons Street and the intersection of Ash Street and Rocky Hill Road. “The (residents) of Ash Street were an enormous help to us,” Iselin said, adding the Rehoboth Police Department, particularly Chief James Trombetta, provided invaluable assistance to the film crew by shutting down the roads.

Director Cameron K. Morton grew up making movies using his grandparent’s VHS camera in North Dighton. Morton remembers hearing stories about the red-headed ghost from his grandfather.

The filmmakers hope to have a public screening of the film for residents. Corso hopes to submit “44” to various film festivals. A fulllength feature about the red-headed hitchhiker is also a possibility.

Corso hopes to bring more film production to Rehoboth, which he notes has a rich history.

Making “44” was a labor of love for not only Iselin and Corso, but also for the production staff. “We had about 45 crew members (working on the film) in the cold, at night, for virtually free,” Corso explained. “Every single one of these crew members is absolutely at the top of their game. They work on the biggest productions with the biggest stars. The team we had on this was an absolute wrecking ball of a force. It wasn’t an easy feat but we accomplished what we set out to do.”

The Seekonk Scene Santa Claus to Arrive at The Seekonk Fire Museum!

Santa Claus will arrive for his annual visit at the Seekonk Fire Museum, 211 Newman Avenue in Seekonk Sunday, December 10th from 11AM-2PM.

Santa will be riding aboard the Antique Maxim Engine #3 along with his elves.

The festivities for children and families of all ages will be inside the museum at Santa’s workshop as well as outdoors in the back of the museum. Hot Chocolate, S’mores and food will be available. Santa’s Mailbox will be there to collect the children’s letters as well.

The event is free to the public and sponsored by the Seekonk Fire Museum and the Central Volunteer Fire Association. Donations to the museum are always graciously accepted.

The CVFA is a 501c3 non-profit association.

Ed & Lisa Medeiros continued their Thanksgiving tradition of sharing their good fortune with those in need. This year, as in the past, they donated thousands of turkeys to multiple organizations, including fifty-five turkeys to Doorways food pantry. “Ed & Lisa are very generous” said Diane Fox of Doorways. “Without them, we could never take care of all of our people.”

Scouting for Food Breaks the (Food) Bank

Scouts and parents from BSA Troops 1 & 9, and Cub Scout Pack 88, worked hard to collect over 8,000 pounds of food for Doorways Food Pantry to supplement holiday tables The Scouting for Food collection was another enormous success; the Scouts from BSA Troops 1 and 9, and the Cub Scouts from Pack 88, collected a record haul estimated at over 8,000 pounds of food donations from the people of Seekonk, whose contributions will bolster the flagging inventory of food at the Doorways Food Pantry. The Scouts “broke” the food bank, filling 25 shopping carriages to the brim with canned goods, and covered every flat surface with an assortment of food, wonderful in both quantity and variety.

“The donations filled our space to overflowing.” said Diane Fox of Doorways. “We had boxes and bags filling every available surface, with boxes piled two, three, and even four high, lining up and down the hallways. The Scouts are a great neighbor to the community.”

The residents of Seekonk donated generously in support of their neighbors, and the food you gifted will fill the cupboards of homes throughout our community for many weeks to come. Most of Doorways shoppers are seniors on fixed incomes, or people with disabilities who cannot work. Others are young families struggling with low incomes. Regardless of the age or the reason, the assistance provided by a food pantry is more important than ever, as the cost of gasoline, fuel oil, and groceries continues to increase. Over seventy families rely on Doorways on a regular basis, and Doorways, in turn, relies on people like you. God bless you for sharing.

Seekonk Schools Welcome 34 New Students

34 new students have been enrolled in Seekonk Public Schools in the last two weeks, according to Superintendent Rebecca Kidwell.

Approximately 40 migrant families are being housed at the Ramada Inn on Route 44 in Seekonk. “Almost every hotel room that I went to looking for a kindergartner or middle-schooler, there was also a three year-old or an infant,” Kidwell told the school committee Monday.

‘These truly are families, they are not all two parent families, some of them are one adult here with several children. At this point, they live in a hotel room. Some of them are learning varying degrees of English. They speak different languages.”

Kidwell said the parents are doing what they can for their children, considering they came from “a variety of really difficult circumstances.”

Last August, Governor Maura Healey (D) declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts due to the influx of migrant families arriving in the Bay State. The governor has called on the federal government to act to address the issue in Massachusetts.

The administration was notified by the state on October 20 about the sheltering of the migrant families. “The Town and the School Department have been actively working with the State and the National Guard to assist these families during their stay at the Ramada,” Town Administrator Shawn Cadime said on October 31.

“The School District is primarily affected by this placement.”

“We committed to register students as soon as possible under McKinney-Vento, which is the homeless law that allows them to register with whatever documentation they have,” Kidwell explained.

“It is impressive to see the number of families who worked hard to preserve their children’s records through difficult circumstances and there are some families who were not able to do so and are here with minimal records.”

The state is providing funding for the new students. Kidwell said the district’s operating budget will not be used for that purpose. “We are not putting ourselves through a fiscal hardship in that way,” Kidwell said, adding the last two weeks were an “emotional journey” for staff and students. “We all learned a lot really quickly,” she added.

Voters at the Seekonk Town Meeting approved several fund transfers including the sum of $676,544.40 from Free Cash to the Stabilization Fund, the sum of $676,544.40 from Free Cash to the Municipal Capital Stabilization Fund, the sum of $967,420.40 from Free Cash to the Building & Infrastructure Stabilization Fund, and the sum of $676,544.40 from Free Cash to the Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) Trust Fund.

An effort to amend the town’s zoning bylaws failed to get the two thirds necessary for passage. The tally was 57 in favor and 44 in opposition.

Seekonk Appoints Retired Fire Chief as Interim

The Seekonk Select Board recently voted to appoint former Falmouth Fire Chief Michael Small as the town’s Interim Fire Chief. “His approach to coming in as an interim is putting both feet forward,” Town Administrator Shawn Cadime said of Small, who retired in 2020.

Chief Sandra Lowery, who has been on sick leave since midSeptember, will be retiring in February. Lowery has been serving in the position since October 2021.

Cadime said Small will be paid at an hourly rate of $75 with no benefits.

Former Select Board Chair Michael Healy criticized the board for hiring Small as Interim Fire Chief. Healy, a former Seekonk Fire Chief, resigned from the board on November 13. “We hire a Fire Chief (from outside Seekonk) when we have someone internally who could be the Interim Chief,” Healy said. “(The firefighter) wasn’t even considered for anything for personal reasons. I will no longer sit here and watch public safety be destroyed in the town of Seekonk.

There isn’t one ounce of safety anywhere in the fire (department) in the town of Seekonk right now.”

Cadime said Healy’s comments were filled with “inaccuracies” but did not specify what those were. The Fire Department has had three fire chiefs in the last five years. Healy retired in 2019. Lowery’s predecessor, David Rave, served as Chief for two years before his termination in 2021. Rave had previously served with the East Providence Fire Department.

The Board agreed to launch a search for a permanent Fire Chief by looking for candidates within the Fire Department as well as outside the department. The vote was 3 to 1. Chris Zorra, Michelle Hines, and Justin Sullivan were in favor, with Pam Pozzi in opposition.

Hines will serve on the five member search committee, which will also include Cadime, the town’s Human Resource Director, and two retired Fire Chiefs. “There may be some (firefighters) who are qualified for the position and don’t want it, and there may be some firefighters who want it but aren’t qualified,” Hines said.

“If we have a candidate (within the fire department), that’s who we should go with,” Pozzi said. “Just because a person hasn’t taken a test to be a Captain, doesn’t mean they don’t know the department inside and out and how to run it. Let him be the Interim and let him show us that he can do it.”

Healy served as the town’s Fire Chief for many years before retiring in 2019. He was elected to the Select Board in 2021 and became Chair last April. Healy’s term was due to expire in April 2024.

State Officials Investigating TV9 Board

The state is investigating allegations of discrimination filed against the Board of Directors of TV9. Deborah Hoch and Kristen Montgomery, former board members, filed complaints with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) in Boston.

“They found the complaint valid,” Hoch said, noting an investigator has been assigned. Hoch appeared at the Seekonk Select Board’s November 15 meeting.

Hoch urged the board to hold off on a funding agreement with the TV9 Board of Directors until the Attorney General’s office releases their findings. “They are concerned about the illegality of the board at TV9,” Hoch said, adding there may have been violations of the bylaws as well as “concerns of assets being misused.”

David Saad, the President of the Board, has denied Hoch’s allegations. “If the allegations are true, the board would not condone that,” said Town Administrator Shawn Cadime. “We can’t really say if there’s legitimacy behind it. Everybody was taken aback by the statements that you have highlighted. They are concerning.”

Hoch and Montgomery both allege they were discriminated against by Seekonk Cable Access, on the basis of age and sex.

Hoch and Montgomery previously told the Select Board they endured harassment and threats by male board members. Montgomery called the environment at TV9 “toxic” and “hostile.”

Hoch, in her complaint filed with the MCAD on August 24, noted she had been “an elected, unpaid member” of TV9’s Board of Directors since 2008.

A meeting will be held in December for the purpose of presenting the TV-9 membership with a new set of bylaws. A new board will also be elected. All TV 9 subscribers are eligible to vote.

Members of the Seekonk Police Department celebrated Bill Soule’s special birthday on November 2. Soule, a veteran of World War 2, turned 100 years old.

Soule, who was part of the invasion of Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, served as Parade Marshal for the Veterans Day observance.

“It’s just a number,” Soule told the Reporter last September.

Soule has maintained a positive attitude through the hardships of life. “You’ve got to live day to day and hope for the best,” Soule said. “But you never know from one day to the next what’s going to happen.”

As for the secrets to a long life, Soule offers some practical advice. “Keep in good health. Keep busy. Keep your feet on the floor and make sure you walk around all the time. Be a good citizen.”

Rehoboth’s Last World War II Veteran

Everett Mann is the last surviving World War II veteran in Rehoboth. Mann served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946. He was a Seaman Second Class on the U.S.S Ostrich which sailed from Texas to Louisiana. Mann’s brother served overseas in Europe during the war.

“I worked in the engine room,” Mann recalled. Mann was awarded with the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal.

Mann, who turns 97 in December, grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and moved to Rehoboth as a teenager. He skipped high school and enlisted in the military.

More than 900 town residents served in World War II. Veterans Agent Jake Kramer said four World War II veterans have passed away in the last 18 months.

According to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 119,550 of the 16.1 million Americans who served in World War II are alive as of 2023. 131 veterans are dying each day.

On their website, the National World War II Museum in New Orleans lists the numbers of living World War II veterans in each state.

Massachusetts has 3,588 veterans.

After he got out of the military, Mann worked for a tool manufacturer in Newport for awhile before gaining employment at Texas Instruments in Attleboro.

“I was a tool maker for 40 years,” Mann said. Mann, who is a widower, has five daughters. Mann has been involved with AmVets, a national organization which provides services for veterans. He also belongs

December 2023 The Reporter to the American Legion Post 302 and is a frequent visitor to the Council on Aging at Francis Farm. Staying active is important to him.

“I play bocce three days a week here,” Mann noted. “No aches, no pains, no nothing.”

Mann said he hasn’t been to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. He’s not fond of flying.

“I don’t want to leave Rehoboth,” he added. “It’s a great town.”

Rehoboth Resident Named to International Honor Society

Manchester, NH (November 20, 2023) - Rehoboth resident, Ashley Damon, is among select students from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., who have been inducted into the Epsilon Tau-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing.

This fall Sigma Theta Tau inducted Damon among 30 students for the 2023-2024 academic year. Damon is expected to graduate in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

To be considered for induction into Sigma Theta Tau, students must have completed at least half of the nursing curriculum in baccalaureate programs at accredited institutions of higher education, rank in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class, and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

In 1922 six nurses founded Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, today known as Sigma, at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now home of the Indiana University School of Nursing. The society’s name derives from the Greek words for love, courage, and honor. Currently, Sigma has more than 135,000 active members who live in more than 100 countries.

Rehoboth Family has a Giving Spirit This Holiday Season

This was Justin, Nicole and Wyatt Radny’s first year as residents of Rehoboth and they are setting their best foot forward in helping the community. As a family, they started an annual Thanksgiving tradition for their son Wyatt (now 2 years old) when he was only 6 months old. The idea behind this tradition was to give Wyatt something to look forward to every year as a way to support and give back to his community as his parents have enjoyed doing throughout their lives. The past three years the food drive has had an overwhelming success with each year better than the last. This year The Radnys were able to donate over 500 non-perishable items and an array of personal hygiene and toiletries with the help of their friends, family, neighbors and coworkers to the Rehoboth Food Pantry. Your Local, Hometown Seekonk native Maribeth Robertson realized the achievement Real Estate Professional of a lifetime last August when she swam the English Channel.

Robertson, who was a champion swimmer at Seekonk High School, now lives in Connecticut with her husband and children.

A person who had a major impact on Robertson’s life was her friend and mentor Marcy McDonald, who coached Robertson’s oldest son at Laurel East Hartford YMCA. McDonald is a famous open water swimmer, having swam the English Channel 18 times.

It took Robertson almost 13 and a half hours to complete the grueling swim.

“From point to point, it’s about 21 miles,” Robertson said. “It wasn’t a horrible day, it wasn’t the easiest day. I definitely was pushed a bit. I was really frustrated because for several hours I was just swimming parallel to the coast of France. The current really does push you a lot. I was exhausted and nauseous the whole time.”

Robertson was relieved when she completed the swim. “(Tom), my husband, actually got to swim into shore with me,” Robertson continued. “They had him swim the last 50 meters with COMMUNITY & TEACHERS me, just to make sure that I got in safe. Sports Update DR vs Seekonk Thanksgiving Game

DR won the annual thanksgiving game backed by senior Kevin Goussie Jr., who scored 3 touchdowns (2 rushing, one interception return) by a final score of 42-16. DR also got a passing touchdown and rushing touchdown from Joel DaSilva, and a receiving touchdown from David Diaz Tavarez. Senior David Hunt also scored his first varsity points with a 2-point conversion catch. DR went out to 29-0 at halftime in large part by their defense which held Seekonk’s rushing attack in check.

Dighton-Rehoboth Highschool Boys Soccer News

Dighton-Rehoboth Highschool Boys Soccer Team Made it to the Final 4 in States!

This was a big accomplishment for our Boys Soccer Team and school. The Dighton Rehoboth High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team ended their regular season with 9 wins, 1 loss, and 8 ties.

Due to weather conditions there were many postponed games early in the season. This made the rest of the season a strenuous one with some weeks having back to back games.

The boys worked through this intense schedule and some injuries to be placed as the 26th seed in Division Three. They then went into the state tournament to beat the 39th, 7th, 23rd and 2nd seeds to make it to the final four. The boys ultimately lost to the 3rd seed, Norwell , who went on to win the Championship. Seven of the eleven seniors on this team have been the first class under

Coaches Mike Morgado, Tyler Rosa, and Evan Rosa. This team worked hard from the back line all the way up, and everyone who showed up for practices and games helped make this team ready.

DRRHS has a strong soccer community who are like a family. The overwhelming support could be seen at the games… even the ones over an hour away!

The team will be looking to fill shoes of Spencer Jones, Bryce Doehler, Matty Suprenard and Kristof Trond, as well as seniors Will Hoskins, Liam Hannon, Trey Brierly, Aiden Leblanc, Dylan Andreozzi and Jacob Viveros.

The BMS 2023 Lady Raiders Soccer Team recently completed a tremendous season by capturing their first ever Massasoit League Girls Soccer Championship!

The 2023 Squad made history, with an overall record of 13 wins, no losses, and 1 tie. Lanie Kazanjian had the most goals scored for the team with 20, while Leah Hyder took the title of compiling the most assists at 15.

The caliber of play this team displayed was unsurpassable throughout the entire season! Our eighth graders will undeniably be missed!

The team consisted of sixth graders - Macy Frissell, Cece Oliveira, Abigail Polychronis, Maeve Santos, and our Team Manager, Audrey Kreizinger; seventh graders - Vanessa Escobar, Cassidy Hasenfratz, Brynn Hoskins, Leah Hyder, Lanie Kazanjian, Quinn Kotch, Reece Kotch, and Lyla Lewandowski; and eighth graders - Campbell Cordeiro, Bailey D’Alessio, Alexis Flood, Zoe Fortin, Taylor Pierce, and our exceptional Goalie, Annie Reed. Hurley Middle School Boys’ Soccer Team Takes 1st Place!

Hurley Middle School Boys’ Soccer Team placed 1st with stats of 12 games won and 2 games lost.

The boys team received a championship banner, which was put up in the gym. The last time a banner was won was in 2018. The team was honored at their Spirit Week celebration on November 22.

Seekonk is a part of the Massasoit Middle School Soccer League along with Berkley, Bridgewater, Dighton, Freetown-Lakeville, Middleboro, Norton, Raynham, Rehoboth, Somerset, Westport The team was coached by Coach LaFond. This is Coach LaFond’s second season as the coach for the boys’ soccer team - he is also an 8th grade Science teacher.

The 2023 Beckwith Raiders Boys Soccer Team recently finished a great season. The team compiled an overall record of 10 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie.

Though they often lacked size compared to other other schools across the league, the team always played hard and took pride in showing the meaning of unselfish play. Their impressive ball movement and skill on the ball allowed them to move the ball and create many scoring chances.

Eleven different players scored goals throughout the season and all twenty members made meaningful contributions to the team.

Jayden Hasenfratz led the team in scoring with an impressive 17 goals in 15 games. Micah Fischman and Reid Maloof led the team in assists, combining for over 25 goals throughout the season.

Players this year included eighth graders - Domenic Andreozzi, Jonathan Bennett, Kaleb Chappell, Micah Fischman, Jayden Hasenfratz, Team Captain Reid Maloof, Zach Sidok, Logan Slater, and Miles Trexler; seventh graders - Jax Fogel, Quinn Garcia, Gyor Jean-Louis, Andrew Mandeville, Nick Miller, Connor Ruhle, Bradley Russell, Alex Warren, and Ryan White; and sixth graders Chase Moniz and Alex Quin. The team was coached by Mr. Jesse Francese.

This fall some of the individual dens (grade level groups) of Pack 1 Rehoboth each took on a different service project at the Redway Plain Veteran’s Memorial. To start, the Tiger den (1st grade) cut a new landscape bed around the “Veteran’s Memorial” sign, carted the debris away, and finished off by mulching the bed nicely. It came out fantastic and they represented Pack 1 well.

Next, the Wolf den (2nd grade) split off portions of the Shasta daisies that run along the fence perimeter. They were then bundled up and transported to Francis Farm, where they were ultimately transplanted into landscaping beds at that location. The end result was great and sure to be even more spectacular when these flowers bloom next season.

Finally, the Webelos 2 den (5th grade) mulched the landscaping beds along the entire road perimeter and finished off by carting away brush and other debris that was in, and adjacent to, the beds. The hard work payed off and the project transformed the look of this area in a great way.

Overall, the Cub Scouts of Pack 1 Rehoboth made a great combined effort to contribute to the Veteran’s Memorial at Redway Plain. They are already looking forward to their next projects to support the community they are proud of, to say “Thank You” to the community that supports them, and to show their appeciation to the veteran’s that have done so much for their country.

Rehoboth Girl Scout Troop 338 members were challenged to build “bone bridges” as a part of their STEM workshop. The troop members built a variety of different bridges using pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, and clothes pins to hold multiple pieces of candy.

In the end, our troop member Aly took first place. Her bridge was able to hold 32 pieces of candy!

Hornbine School Museum’s Historical Binders Saved

The Hornbine school Museum has closed for the 2023 season.

Each year, we pack away items in plastic boxes so the mice can’t destroy materials during the winter. We store some items at our homes for safe keeping. In 2021, I, Dave Downs, took home the library of three ring binders that Beverly Pettine created during her 17 years as teacher-curator of the museum. Those of you who have visited the Hornbine School during the summer have probably seen the ten large binders.

Unfortunately, my water heater gave out and flooded our basement floor. Fortunately, the binders were “safe” in a plastic box.

Unfortunately, the plastic box had a crack in it that allowed the water to enter and soak many of the binder’s pages! My wife and I spent many hours trying to save what we could by drying separate pages etc. We ended up with hundreds of wrinkled pages which were out of order. We were able to press the wrinkles out of most of the pages over a period of time but we weren’t able to save some of the pictures or reassemble the binders.

Beverly Pettine came to our rescue. She spent many hours of her own time, this summer, repairing damaged pages and restoring the binders close to their original condition. These binders are a wealth of information about the Hornbine School Museum and all the other Rehoboth one room schools. We invite you to visit the school this coming 2024 season and view them for yourselves. And we thank Beverly Pettine for her dedication to the Hornbine School Museum!

They will also touch on indigenous crafts and the Algonquin language. The presentation will conclude with a Friendship Dance in which all attending are welcome to participate.

Our Rehoboth Garden Club has been very busy getting ready for the holiday season. On November 27th our club President Paul Nunes taught members how to create hanging boxwood kissing balls. Each unique design will be a beautiful addition to a member’s home.

On Monday December 4th club members will gather for our annual wreath and basket making event. Decorated wreaths will be donated to decorate the civic buildings in both Seekonk and Rehoboth. Decorated basket arrangements of fresh greens will be created and delivered to homebound club members. A luncheon will be provided by the club officers, followed by a holiday party.

Looking ahead to Monday January 15, 2024, our meeting topic will be The State of the Coast. The beaches, harbors, waterfront business districts and habitats as we know them are endangered. A speaker from the Trustees of Reservations will explain how climate change-driven sea level rise and storm flooding will affect miles of roads and impact ecosystems crucial to coastal resilience and the plants, animals and humans who live there. The community is invited to attend this important presentation. Join us on Monday January 15, 2024 at the Rehoboth Congregational Church Fellowship Hall at 6:30 PM. Going Around in Circles trying to drive around a new roadway design with “no direction home” to quote Bob Dylan. Supposedly the signage is better now.

Rotaries make me nervous too, though I do OK on the one in Taunton. I hope that the new Rehoboth rotary they are working on at the intersection of Rt. 44 and 118 goes smoothly too. I’m sure we’ll all get used to it. That has always been a bad corner. But then so many intersections in New England are nerve-wracking.

Whether you call them roundabouts, rotaries, or traffic circles, they do require special driving skills. I could never drive in England anyway (“wrong” side of road, roads are too narrow, I can’t drive a stick shift) but the endless series of roundabouts over there really settles the question. My favorite hair-raising examples are the double roundabouts where you get off one traffic circle and enter another one immediately.

Let’s hope things get straightened out soon with the new East Gold, Silver, and Sterling Providence rotary. As far as rush hour goes, I hear the Washington u.s. and Foreign coins Bridge is just as bad as far as traffic back-ups are concerned. Yet something needs to be done about the Henderson Bridge. It was old comics and sporting cards apparently declared structurally unsound as early as 1996. That’s old watches and collectibles almost three decades of 20,000 cars a day driving over it!

Now imagine the traffic backups on bridges and add to that a diamonds and jewlery certain four-letter word: snow. I’ve never understood this yearning phone # 508 336-9103 for snow at Christmas. I imagine many commuters in this area who go to and from Providence have a Christmas wish this year for an easier drive home. Part of the new Henderson (aka Red) Bridge remodel opened with a new bridge heading into the East Side. The whole thing won’t be complete until 2025, they say. Opening night in November caused major headaches as drivers heading to the East Providence side tried to figure out the new rotary on that side of the bridge, made worse by the poor signage.

Did you know there’s a book club just for kids at the Blanding?

This book club for kids from kindergarten through grade 4 meets on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30. This program offers an entertaining spin on reading, including crafts, snacks and games, and is led by students from D-R High School.

For younger children, library story hours continue on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11, with Baby and Toddler story times for children up to age 4. On Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 there are Story and Craft Times for children ages 3 and up. Siblings are welcome at both of these ongoing programs and no registration is necessary.

• Elvis, our Elf on the Shelf, is back for his December visit to the Blanding. The library will again be featuring a holiday tree in the lobby. On this “ToileTree” you’ll find suggestions of toiletries (soap, toothpaste, etc.) to bring to the library to donate to the Rehoboth Food Pantry.

• Take a walk around the library’s front garden to read our story walk, the children’s picture book “Bear Says Thanks” by Karma Wilson. This will be on display through Dec. 30.

• The Blanding Book Club will start the new year on Wed. Jan. 3 at 7pm, with a discussion of “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt. Copies are available at the library.

Let’s spread good cheer for all the creatures in the forest! We’ll meet at Osamequin Farm for a caroling stroll along the trails to sing together, explore the winter landscape, and celebrate the festive season. Registration Begins December 1st. Bring some comfort to four-footed friends from the Seekonk Pet Shelter and enjoy the feel of snuggly warm fleece while you do! Register to receive a kit to create a no-sew fleece blanket and return the completed project to the library.

The Seekonk Animal Shelter will give a blanket to an adopted pet as they join their new family. Quantity is limited; registration with a SAILS library card is required. Make Your Own Milk Jug Greenhouse to Start Native Seeds Workshop

Carlson Tree has been your neighborhood tree care service for over 30 years!

If you’ve been wondering how to get started with growing native plants from seed, then attend this workshop offered by The Seekonk Land Conservation Trust and Rehoboth Land Trust! Native plant seeds normally experience a cold winter which we can simulate in the safety of a repurposed milk jug left outside. As the seasons change, the seeds germinate on their natural schedule, you transplant them into seedling flats, then into larger pots until you’re ready to plant them in your yard!

Using the greenhouse space at Osamequin Farm in Seekonk, participants will first learn about native plants via a presentation, then create their own milk jug greenhouse planted with 2 different species of seeds. This program is scheduled from 1:00 -3:00 pm on January 20, 2024 with a January 27th snowdate. The program fee is $30. BYOMJ – Bring your own milk jug or translucent gallon container without a lid.

The 11th annual RIBC blood drive in memory of Bob McKenna will be held Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 9:00 - 3:00 at Seekonk High School.

The turnout has been wonderful every year and hopefully that will continue.

Blood donations are so very important and desperately needed. Please take advantage of this opportunity to donate close to home. If you are a regular blood donor, please keep in mind that eight weeks prior to January 27 is December 2. Seekonk Human Services will work with community members to help bring a personal touch to senior citizens. The goal is to provide seniors with outside contact and gifts to let them know they are not forgotten and alone.

The holiday season should be a time of joy with your loved ones. However, for some, that isn’t the case. Often times, the holidays are geared towards children and families, and those who are on their own tend to get left out. Human Services will be collecting donated gifts and items to provide to those seniors who might not have close family, have a fixed income or both. Included items may consist of slippers, clothing items, hygiene products, reading materials, card games, word puzzles, gift cards and Seekonk trash bags. Please feel free to think outside the box. Homemade items such as blankets, scarves, hats and cards are great options.

Veteran’s Corner VA Pensions

The Veterans Pension program provides monthly payments to wartime Veterans who meet certain age or disability requirements, and who have income and net worth within certain limits.

Am I eligible for Veterans Pension benefits? You may be eligible for the Veterans Pension program if you meet these requirements.Both of these must be true: • You didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge, and

• Your yearly family income and net worth meet certain limits set by Congress. Your net worth includes all personal property you own (except your house, your car, and most home furnishings), minus any debt you owe. Your net worth includes the net worth of your spouse.

And at least one of these must be true about your service: • You started on active duty before September 8, 1980, and you served at least 90 days on active duty with at least 1 day during wartime, or • You started on active duty as an enlisted person after September 7, 1980, and served at least 24 months or the full period for which you were called or ordered to active duty (with some exceptions) with at least 1 day during wartime, or • You were an officer and started on active duty after October 16, 1981, and you hadn’t previously served on active duty for at least 24 months And at least one of these must be true: • You’re at least 65 years old, or • You have a permanent & total disability, or • You’re a patient in a nursing home for long-term care because of a disability, or • You’re getting Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income How do I know if I served under an eligible wartime period? Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club News

Our meeting on November 16th was very productive. Most importantly, our members suggested and approved charitable contributions to several organizations that serve and assist our seniors.

We are excited about our Christmas Party coming up on December 20th at Davenports in East Providence at noon. If you are planning to attend, all you need to bring is your appetite and a wrapped gift ($10 and under) for our gift exchange! Last year we had a fabulous time and are anticipating that this year will be very enjoyable.

Our plans for an outing to see a play in the spring, and plans for our 50th anniversary celebration are progressing well. Helping hands are always welcome.

Members of the Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club wish everyone an amazing and healthy Holiday Season. We hope to see many of you soon.

Rehoboth Mourns Longtime COA Employee

Rehoboth is mourning the death of Bradley Marshall, a former Council on Aging employee.

According to his obituary, “Marshall, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 8, 2023 while vacationing in Spain. He was Bradley Marshall the beloved husband of James “Jimmy” B. Kelly, Jr., the couple had been together for forty-three years. They married on June 23, 2012.”

Selectman George Solas said Marshall had served as an Outreach Coordinator and SHINE representative for 11 years. “He was a loyal and dedicated individual for our seniors,” Solas said Monday.

Marshall had worked in administration and was assistant vice-president at VA Hospitals in Providence, West Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain for over twenty-five years until retiring in 2009. After retiring, he worked as a Southeast, MA, school van driver; salesman at Sears; and custodian at St. Blaise Church in Bellingham.

In 2015, Marshall received the Public Servant Award from the Rehoboth Lions Club, the Massachusetts Senate, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

He was also recognized by the International Catholic Deaf Association, Providence Chapter #57 Certificate of Achievement Award for 8 weeks of Study in Bible and Prayer in 1995 and was named Member of the Year in 2007; Boston Federal Executive Board – Support Personal Award in 2002 and St. Francis Deaf Senior Citizens – Member for 9 years Award in 2009.

“Many of our seniors remember his dedication in providing them with help to better understand Medicaid, Medicare, and health insurance questions by providing one on one counseling and information,” Solas added.

Year-End Tax Tips

Tax Deductions

One of the most effective ways to reduce your taxes is to reduce your taxable income by contributing to a work retirement plan. For 2023, you can save as much as $22,500 ($30,000 if you are 50+ years old). These contributions have to come from your paycheck (e.g. you cannot send in a check). Each plan may have other limitations, so check with your HR department.

If you have a high deductible health insurance plan and Health Savings Account (HSA), you can fund it through April 15, 2024.

HSAs are typically funded via paycheck, but it is possible to mail checks in. The HSA contribution limit is $3,850 for a single individual or $7,300 for a family. This is increased by $1,000 per person that is 55+ years old.

Charitable contributions are a final possible deduction. The current tax laws don’t allow most people to benefit from charitable contributions. One consideration is to bunch deductions in certain years to be able to itemize your deductions. For example, if you are donating $10,000 per year, it might make sense to donate $20,000 one year and then skip the next year. You can also consider establishing a Donor Advised Fund (DAF). The DAF provides a potential tax deduction the year it is established. However, you have flexibility to distribute money from your DAF over time. DAFs can also be invested, so you may be able to just distribute earnings on the investments and have a perpetual fund to gift. One final consideration is that if you are over the age of 70 ½, you are able to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA directly to a charity. There is no tax deduction on the gift, but you also are not taxed on the distribution.

Portfolio Strategies

We have seen a lot of volatility in the markets in 2023. Because of this, you may be able to implement tax-loss harvesting strategies. Tax loss harvesting is done when you sell an investment to

produce a tax loss. Tax losses offset any capital gains income you have. You can also deduct an additional $3,000 per year of tax losses against other income. Any unused tax losses carry over until they utilized.

To implement this, you should look at your cost basis to calculate potential losses. IRS rules require that you do not reinvest in a Lars Lambrecht like-kind security for at least 31 days. So, you can sell an investment and leave it in cash for 31 days before reinvesting, or perhaps invest it in a different type of investment.

Another strategy is to consider selling items with a gain if you are in the 12% Federal marginal tax bracket, as no capital gains taxes are due.

A final portfolio consideration is to convert some of your IRA to a Roth IRA. Taxes are due on conversions. However, there may be long-term tax savings by doing this. Once money is in your Roth IRA, it generally grows tax-free. A strategy I often employ is to convert “just enough” of their IRA to keep them in a certain tax bracket. For example, if you are in the 12% or 22% marginal tax bracket, you may want to convert the maximum amount to keep you in your tax bracket.

Business Owner Strategies:

If you are a small business owner, and you do not have a retirement plan established for your business, there is still time to get one in place. You can establish a Solo-K (this is a 401-K plan for sole business owners) through 12/31. You can establish a SEP retirement plan through the date when you file your tax return (including extensions). There are pros and cons for both types of plans. Another strategy is to make purchases for business items that will be tax-deductible.

From the State House Representative Steven Howitt Supports Long-Term Care Reform Bill To Protect Patients, Expand Workforce

Boston – State Representative Steven Howitt (R-Seekonk) is backing long-term care legislation that contains enhanced protections for patients as well as expanded training provisions for the industry’s workforce.

House Bill 4178, An Act to improve qualRepresentative ity and oversight of long-term care, was enSteven Howitt grossed by the House of Representatives on November 15 by a unanimous vote of 158-0. The bill reflects several of the reforms recommended in the 2020 report filed by the Nursing Facility Task Force, which was charged with “evaluating ways to ensure the financial stability of skilled nursing facilities; considering the role of skilled nursing facilities within the continuum of elder care services; and addressing current workforce challenges.”

Representative Howitt said the bill will help to address persistent staffing shortages at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities and ensure proper safeguards are in place to prevent and contain infectious disease outbreaks among patients.

In light of the COVID-19 global pandemic, which disproportionately impacted older residents in nursing homes, House Bill 4178 requires all long-term care facilities in Massachusetts to develop a customized outbreak response plan. This plan must include clear policies for testing protocols; isolating infected and at-risk patients; notifying residents, their families, visitors, and staff about any contagious disease outbreaks; implementing outbreak response measures; and notifying public health officials of any outbreaks that occur.

Representative Howitt said House Bill 4178 also strengthens the Attorney General’s ability to crack down on long-term care facilities that are found liable for abusing or neglecting their patients by increasing financial penalties five-fold and expanding the statute of limitations governing when the Attorney General can bring civil charges from two years to four years. Under the bill, fines will be increased from $5,000 to $25,000 in cases where no bodily injury results; from $10,000 to $50,000 when bodily injury results; from $20,000 to $100,000 in cases involving sexual assault or serious bodily injury; and from $50,000 to $250,000 if the patient dies.

In addition, House Bill 4178 enhances the Department of Public Health’s ability to monitor long-term care facilities and to take decisive action when violations occur. This includes providing DPH with the power to limit, restrict, suspend or revoke a license for cause and to appoint temporary managers to help bring facilities into

compliance with acceptable standards. All long-term care facilities will also be subject to at least one resident-centered inspection per year to gather information about the quality of services provided at the facility and to determine its compliance with state and federal requirements.

Representative Howitt noted that House Bill 4178 also contains provisions for supporting employees working in long-term care facilities. The bill directs the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) to establish and administer workforce training grant programs for: • supervisory and leadership training; • skills advancement for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and other entry-level workers; and • career pathways to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) These grants can be used to cover tuition costs, childcare and/ or transportation stipends, licensing costs, and/or general stipends for program participants.

New Historic Marker at King’s Rock on Route 136

RI Representative June Speakman and Massachusetts Representative Steven Howitt were joined by Warren Councilperson Keri Cronin, Pokanoket Sachem Dancing Star, Pokanoket Sagamore Winds of Thunder, Johnson’s Roadside Farm Market and landowner Tim Johnson, and Blount Fine Foods President Todd Blount for the installation of an historic marker at King’s Rock on Market Street (Route 136) just south of the Market. A legislative grant and a donation by Blount Fine Foods supported the initiative. The Rock, which straddles the Warren/Swansea line, was known as the place on Sachem’s Knoll where American Indians from all over New England used to celebrate their victories in tribal wars and talk about their peace treaties. Stated Historian Otis Wright in his 1917 History of Swansea, “In this rock can be seen a hollow where Indian women ground their corn for the feast.” The marker is part of a series of historic markers placed throughout out a nine-town region by the Sowams Heritage Area Project that is working on National Park Service recognition of the Sowams Area (see Sowams.org). The Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District has partnered with the Greater Attleboro Council for Children in their annual “Christmas is for kids” (CIFK) program. Dighton Rrehoboth Regional High School will be used as a distribution site for qualifying families, ages 1 through 18, in both Dighton and Rehoboth.

“Kelly Fox and the Council for Children team have helped so many families in this area, and we are so excited to augment their efforts by both collecting donations and being a local distribution site,” Superintendent Bill Runey said Monday. “We look forward to making dreams come true during the holidays.”

After Thanksgiving, the District will launch the donations drive in all five schools in Dighton-Rehoboth.

Rehoboth Food Pantry Holiday Drive

The Rehoboth Food Pantry has been part of the Rehoboth Community for decades. The Pantry provides confidential food and fuel assistance to any Rehoboth resident that finds themselves in need of assistance. Unfortunately, the fight against hunger continues and our pantry plays a key role in helping ensure food security for many.

The Rehoboth Food Pantry will be reaching out shortly with a food/fundraiser campaign. The pantry is not much different than a household. Our costs have risen, food donations drives have been challenging, food supply chains have had issues, and demand has been strong.

Monetary donations allow the pantry to provide items which we do not get donated, go shopping at the Greater Boston Food Bank where a dollar buys more food at greatly reduced prices and operate the pantry. The campaign also will provide a list of food drop off locations across Rehoboth. Your support would be greatly appreciated, especially as we approach the Holiday Season.

Finally, everything the Pantry provides stays right here in Rehoboth.

The meticulously staged production recreates the story of Jesus’ birth through handcrafted venues, period-costumed actors, and live animals, including goats, sheep, and camels.

Holiday Sparkle Returns to the Newport Mansions NEWPORT, R.I. – It won’t be long before visitors to The Breakers are strolling a half-mile outdoor path of glittering lights and colorful displays as holiday music fills the evening air.

For the fourth straight year, “Sparkling Lights at The Breakers” will cast a warm glow over the 13-acre landscape of this iconic Gilded Age landmark on select dates from November 17 through December 30. Walk though dazzling tunnels of light and marvel at the illuminated displays and sparkling surprises along the way, including a striking, 50-foot long, 26-foot-tall light display on the back lawn in the outline of a train from the Vanderbilts’ New York Central and Hudson River Railroad.

As you make your way around the grounds, warm up at one of the fire pits and enjoy holiday treats and adult beverages for purchase on the back terrace and at The Breakers Welcome Center. Once again, s’mores kits will be available for purchase at both locations.

Admission to “Sparkling Lights at The Breakers” requires a special ticket with a specific date and entry time, and it includes interior access to The Breakers during the same visit. Tour times are 4 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The gates close at 6:30 p.m. and the house and grounds close at 8 p.m. Visitors are welcome to stay on the property for as long as they wish until closing. A complete list of dates for “Sparkling Lights at The Breakers” is below.

Mannequins dressed in elegant Gilded Age fashions match the décor in Gertrude Vanderbilt’s bedroom at The Breakers, Alva Vanderbilt’s bedroom at Marble House, and the conservatory at The Elms. The mannequins have been created by Karen Corinha of Corinha Design.

Once again, the 15-foot-tall poinsettia tree in the Great Hall of The Breakers – made up of 150 individual poinsettia plants – provides a wonderful holiday photo opportunity.

All properties are closed on Christmas, and will close at 2 p.m. on December 24.

Cook at home, make a reservation, or cater your event!

In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring cranberries (reserving some for garnish), 1/2 cup maple syrup and water to boil.

Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until cranberries pop and mixture thickens, 8-10 minutes.

Remove cranberry mixture from heat and stir in orange zest, orange juice, 1 teaspoon thyme, rosemary and bourbon.

Place brie on parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake 5-7 minutes, or until inside of cheese softens while outside remains intact.

Transfer brie to serving platter and top with chutney and toasted pecans. Drizzle remaining maple syrup over brie and garnish with remaining fresh thyme and reserved cranberries. Serve with crackers, toasted bread and apple slices.

Cranberries and Chocolate Pecan Snack Mix Recipe from Jess Larson and the American Pecan Promotion Board Prep: 10 minutes ~ Cook: 5 minutes,

• 1 cup pecan halves • 1 cup rice squares cereal (wheat or cinnamon) • 1/2 cup pretzels • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

• 1 1/2 tablespoons pure maple syrup • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

In large, microwave-safe bowl, add pecans, rice squares cereal and pretzels. In small, microwave-safe bowl, add butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, salt and nutmeg. Microwave butter mixture 1-2 minutes until melted then pour over dry mix. Toss well to combine.

Microwave snack mix in 45-second intervals, about 4-5 intervals total, until mix is fragrant, golden and toasty.

Cool mix completely then stir in cranberries and dark chocolate chips.

Jingle Balls

• Nonstick cooking spray • 3 cups mini marshmallows • 12 cups popped popcorn • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint • 6 tablespoons butter or marextract garine • assorted colored sugars Lightly spray large mixing bowl with nonstick cooking spray.

Add popcorn.

Spread plastic wrap on cookie sheet; set aside.

In medium saucepan, melt butter and marshmallows; stir until mixture is smooth. Stir in peppermint extract. Pour over popcorn, mixing until well coated. Let cool 2 minutes.

Spray hands with cooking spray and form popcorn mixture into 3-inch balls. Gently press colored sugar onto balls. Let sit on prepared cookie sheet until cool and set.

White Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn Bark

• 5 cups popped popcorn • 12 ounces white chocolate baking chips, chopped white chocolate or white candy coating • 1 cup crushed hard candy peppermints Cover baking pan with foil or wax paper; set aside.

Place popcorn in large bowl; set aside.

In double boiler over barely simmering water, melt chocolate, stirring until smooth, or melt according to package directions. Stir in crushed peppermints.

Pour chocolate mixture over popcorn mixture and stir to coat.

Spread onto prepared pan; cool completely.

When chocolate is cooled and set, break into chunks for serving.

Pumpkin Cake • 3 cups flour • 1 ¼ cups sugar • 5 eggs • 2 tsp vanilla • 2 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp baking soda • ½ tsp salt • 1 can pumpkin • ¾ tsp nutmeg

• 1½ tsp cinnamon • 1 cup water • 1¼ cup oil • ½ cup raisins or craisins • 1½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans • ½ cup maraschino cherries cut in half

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 12 cup tube pan or bundt pan.

In a large bowl, mix together until well-blended the first 12 ingredients; stir in raisins, nuts and cherries.

Pour into prepared pan and bake in 350 degree oven for 55-65 minutes or until done, depending on your oven.

Cool in pan 5-8 minutes, then place on desired plate.

In a large bowl, mix together cake mix, flour, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, eggnog, oil, and eggs until well-blended; stir nin craisins and walnuts Pour into prepared pan and bake in 350 degree oven for 55-65 minutes or until done, depending on your oven Cool in the pan 5 minutes, then place on desired plate and enjoy.

Eggnog Bread Pudding • 2 cups eggnog • ¾ cup chopped walnuts • ½ cup sugar or pecans • 3 large eggs • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp nutmeg • 8 slices raisin bread cut • 1 tsp vanilla into 1-inch cubes Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 2-quart baking dish with Pam. In a large bowl, combine eggnog, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, and vanilla until smooth; fold in the raisin bread.

Pour into prepared pan and top with cinnamon and nuts. Bake in 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean.

Serve warm or cool for 15 to 20 minutes and top with cool whip.

Linguica Bread

• 1 bag pizza dough white bought at Walmart • 1 ½ cups linguica cut into bite size pieces In a small pot, cook linguica for one minute, remove from pot and place on a plate with a paper towel and let cool. Lightly grease loaf pan with Pam. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

When the linguica is cold, roll out the dough and spread linguica evenly. Roll dough up and place in loaf pan.

Place loaf pan on top of stove and cover with towel to rise. When dough has risen, place pan in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes or until done. *To make a larger linguica bread, buy 2 bags of pizza dough and 3 cups of bite sized linguica; place in a bundt cake pan and cook for one hour or until done. *OPTION: 2 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, ¼ cup chopped nuts, ¼ cup raisins; follow above recipes for bread and OMIT linguica.

Portuguese Sirloin Tips • 2-3 pounds sirloin tips • 1 bottle goya cooking wine • 1 ½ cups ketchup • 1 large onion, sliced

• 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp pepper • 1 tsp garlic powder

In a large bowl, mix together cooking wine, ketchup and onion.

Put salt, pepper and garlic powder all over meat and refrigerate for 2 days.

In a large deep skillet, place all meat and marinade and cook over low to medium heat for 1 to 1 ½ hours with cover on top of skillet. Be sure to stir occasionally so meat does not stick to bottom of skillet.

Serve with rice or potato.

Maids of Honor were Amelia Berube, cousin of the bride, and longtime friend, Emily Marshall. Best Man was Ian McCarrier Bridal party included: Marah Berube, Lauren Hasse, Lauren Neasbitt, Macey Slack, Marah Slack, Nate Marshall, Jake Murphy, Erik Meiners, Eli Timberlake, Austin Ruleman, Jesse Clary, and Garrett Clark. IN MEMORIAM Samuel Coulter Crooks, Jr.

September 26, 1951 - November 5, 2023 Samuel “Sam” Coulter Crooks, Jr., 72, a retired Associate Director at MIT, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at his home.

He was the beloved husband of Dawn (Amoral) Crooks.

They had been married for 28 years.

Sam was born and raised in Lincoln, Rhode Island, a son of the late Samuel and Gwladys (Priestley) Crooks.

Sam was a beacon of love and light to everyone he knew, especially his six children: Shelli, Shanyn, Shaelyn, Samuel, Samuel Coulter Crooks, Jr. Spencer, and Justin.

Sam retired from MIT in 2015 after working there for over 25 years. Sam had previously worked for Brown University Clinical Research Center. Sam was a graduate of Providence College and Lincoln High School.

Sam took immense pride in his children even with the complexities of a blended family. He acknowledged the intricate spectrum of his relationships with his children, which shaped both his journey and theirs. He cherished the times when they gathered around the table, playing the lively card game of Dirty Dog and sharing stories.

Those joyful moments filled his heart with love and brought the family closer together.

Sam was a remarkable host, especially during the holiday season, where he would showcase his extensive collection of crazy hats, adding a touch of laughter and whimsy to the festivities.

His passion for both the great outdoors and farm life was evident as he would lovingly drive his grandkids around on his tractor, creating cherished memories. Those who knew Sam got to witness his seemingly contradictory yet harmonious blend of the rugged and the refined, with his designer hats and boots perfectly complementing his outdoor adventures.

He had an exceptional talent for finding bargains, earning him the title of “true TJ maxxinista.” These memories of his love for the finer things in life, juxtaposed with his thrifty nature, will forever remain etched in our hearts.

Sam also had a deep affection for his dogs, who were more than just pets to him - they were his faithful companions that brought immeasurable happiness and comfort.

Their loyal presence brought joy to his everyday life. Sam had an extensive list of hobbies, from antiquing and spending endless hours exploring shops and marveling at the craftsmanship of bygone eras to his fantastic woodworking skills, where he would take ordinary pieces of wood and transform them into extraordinary creations, showcasing his innate skills and passion for craftsmanship.

Wherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories.

Cataldo and her husband Paul of West Greenwich, RI, and his sons, Samuel Crooks III of Cranston, RI, Spencer Crooks of Seekonk, MA, and Justin Crooks who still lives at home; grandchildren, Kaylyn Kellogg and husband Clayton Kellogg, Timothy S, Abby, Sophie, Joshua, Brayden Turner; Ashley, Hannah and Timothy Schofield, Samuel Crooks, Amelia and Sadie Cataldo; Casey Crooks; great-grandson, Clayton Kellogg.

Sam was also the brother of Bruce Crooks, Brian Crooks, and the late Barry Crooks. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and their families.

Jean Evelyn (Cameron) Amoral Jean Evelyn (Cameron) Amoral , 90, passed away on November 9, 2023, after a brief illness. Her final moments were spent in her home in Rehoboth, MA, surrounded by family and friends.

Known for her generosity and her love of the family farm and her flowers, Jean will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Jean retired from a career at Jean Evelyn (Cameron) Amoral Texas Instruments of Attleboro, MA in 1997.

Radford Barlow Rigsby

Radford Barlow Rigsby died peacefully on November 27, 2023 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Rad was born in El Paso, Texas, on February 19, 1942 to Robert Leslie Rigsby and Jane Barlow Rigsby. He grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and had such fond memories of being a kid in the 50s, hanging out in the neighborhood. When he was 15, his family moved to Peru, another source of great memories and new adventures.

Rad’s educational and professional accomplishments were many and remarkable. He earned degrees from American University, London School of Economics, and Harvard Graduate School of Business.

He spent time in Buenos Aires on a Fulbright Scholarship, Washington, D.C. at the World Bank, and Paris at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

A career in finance culminated with his position at the Harvard Management Company.

In 1996 Rad married Nancy Anderson and moved to an idyllic spot in the countryside of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, where they embraced a peaceful life away from the pace of the city. He retired early and enjoyed many years with Nancy, tending their land, caring for their many and well-loved dogs and looking out after all the critters and birds that were lucky enough to cross his path.

Rad will be remembered for his keen and curious mind, his love of animals and nature, and his wicked good sense of humor.

Rad was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Bonnie Leonard Rigsby, his stepbrother, Bevan Leonard, and his stepsister, Leslie Leonard.

Donald E. Baptiste

Archie O. Norris

Donald E. Baptiste passed away on the morning of November 16, 2023, at his home in Rehoboth. He was the husband of Carol (Hannigan) Baptiste for 53 years.

Born in Taunton, MA on October 15, 1949, he was the son of the late John and Ida (Cardoza) Baptiste.

He grew up in Taunton, graduating from Taunton High School. He furthered his education at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Roger Williams College and held a Bachelor of Science degree in MeDonald E. Baptiste chanical Engineering. He served as a member of the Army National Guard in the early 1970’s.

Don retired as Director of Facilities Operations from Sturdy Memorial Hospital in 2006.

After retiring, Don and Carol wintered in Florida. Don was an avid reader of science fiction, and The Blanding Library kept him well supplied when home in Rehoboth In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his daughter Christine Baptiste-LaMothe and her husband Rick of Berkley. He also leaves behind his brother Jack of Falmouth, sister Joan (Baptiste) Burke of Swansea and several nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his sister Florence B. Furtado and brothers, Edward P. Baptiste and Paul M. Baptiste.

The family would like to thank the oncology department at The Miriam Hospital Lifespan Cancer Institute for their care throughout this journey.

Archie O. Norris, 91, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at the Royal Norwell Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Barbara H. (Castricone) Norris.

Born in Dunn, North Carolina he was the son of the late Archie N. and Bessie (Stewart) Norris.

Mr. Norris was an HVAC/Refrigeration Technician for the former Almacs Supermarkets for many years before he retired. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Archie O. Norris Legion, Post 302, Rehoboth.

Besides his wife he leaves two children, Marcus R. Norris and Lori A. Cassidy and her husband Edward F. Cassidy, two grandchildren, Sarah and Spencer, one great-grandson, Michael, four sisters, Sandra Hobbs, Gloria Mae McLamb, Connie Moore and Joan Dale Bacon and three brothers, Donnie Parker, Curtis Parker and Ronnie Parker. He was the father of the late Charles L. Schaffer and John N. Norris and brother of the late Raeford Cleo Norris, Delma L. Norris and Archie Nuitt Norris, Jr. His funeral and visitation will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 11-12 PM in the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a service to follow at 12:00 PM.

Former Rehoboth Police Officer Passes Away

The Board of Selectmen observed a moment of silence Monday for Gary McKearney, a former Police Officer for the town.

McKearney, 76, born on December 3, 1946, in Attleboro, died on November 25.

According to his obituary, “Gary was a proud graduate of Attleboro High School, Class of 1965. A man of many skills and talents, he worked at Texas Instruments, served as a Police Officer for the Town of Rehoboth, and was the owner and operator of GJM Manufacturing. Gary had a passion for fishing, boating, gardening, restoring antique Compassionately serving the families of Rehoboth and Seekonk for generations cars and trucks, riding on his tractors, and woodworking. His dedication extended to Conveniently located at the Mason’s Club, where he was an active member contributing to the community.”
