Operation Orlo!

By Bob Rodericks To Nicole Estrella it’s simple. “The outside of a school should reflect the school’s inside. Orlo Avenue School has caring, wonderful teachers and staff inside and we need to transform our outside. It is long overdue,” said an energetic Estrella during a recent interview with the Reporter. According to Estrella and many observers, Orlo is the city’s only school without a playground or green area for children. The school building is bordered by the Henderson Bridge/East Side ramp and the very busy North Broadway as well as busy side streets. Parking has always been at a premium in the area. There is virtually no grass around or near the school and children use a small front area and larger rear area for gym class, recess or a neighborhood playground. The play areas are fenced in with chain link and are paved over in asphalt or cement. There is no playground outdoor equipment.

Estrella who has a daughter in kindergarten and another in first grade, along with a pre-schooler, wants to “transform” the outside property at Orlo. Estrella and another Orlo parent Izilda Teves, are leading an effort to follow in the footsteps of Kent Heights and Waddington elementary schools. These schools have recently concluded fund raising projects to build playgrounds at their schools. The task seems even more salient to the Orlo neighborhood with the school being surrounded by so much asphalt and cement. continued on page 6...

To Fee or not to Fee…

The city of East Providence is closing in on a budget year with nowhere to turn.

Administrators have started to seriously suggest that residents pay separate usage fees for many popular activities and services.

Sports, trash pickup, permits, etc., have all been on the table for discussion regarding fee schedules. Suggestions from some in city government have included raising business permit fees, rental fees for the use of the Pierce Field recreation complex, and trying to place paid commercial ads on school web sites. All of these proposals are meeting with some levels of resistance from city residents. Additionally, the city council had thought about a “pay as you go” system for trash removal. At one point city residents received two trash pickups per week. Trash is now hauled from in front of homes once a week, including recycling and brush. The proposal to charge homeowners a fee based on usage has met with major public resentment and Mayor Bruce Rogers recently said that the issue was no longer being considered. The city is even considering the curtailing of neighborhood library branches. Each suggestion to cut services is also met with a wave of protests from groups within the city At the beginning of a recent school committee meeting, committee members invited various youth groups to address the issue of buildings and grounds fees. “When we passed our recent policy on building fees, you didn’t expect an $11,000 fee,” committee member Chrissy Rossi told the assembled youth sporting groups. “I have received many calls in this regard and by the sea of red (all those wearing red clothing) I see here tonight, I think you deserve to be heard,” said Rossi. Rossi made a motion to waive all fees for the non-profit, East Providence based youth groups. Ryan Tellier seconded the motion and all committee members were in favor. A couple of spokespersons for the groups told the committee that they could not afford to pay the fees for renting out school gyms, etc.

Steve Furtado indicated that the committee would be taking another look at restructuring its’ school building fee schedule and could hopefully accommodate the various youth groups in the city. The committee invited representatives of these groups to sit in when they re-write the policies. Interim Superintendent Edward Daft cautioned that some areas like the high school auditorium depended on rental fees in order to maintain their upkeep and replenish supplies and

materials from wear and tear. the committee decided to waive all fees except those for the auditorium. “I want to be fair to all local, non-profit groups in East Providence,” added chairman Charles Tsonos, “so let’s apply this to all, not just those who came out tonight,” he said.

Bradley and School Department Moving Forward…

Chairman Charles Tsonos reported that positive discussions have been held with Bradley Hospital officials. The school department owes Bradley about $4 million in back tuition payments. “There are joint plans to address this debt with Bradley,” said Tsonos. “Bradley needed a response to the letter they had sent us previously.

We had a face to face discussion to address some goals. We will pay our bills,” a seemingly determined Tsonos said. More meetings are scheduled as so far only a city controller has represented city hall. It is expected that more city officials will participate in the next go around with Bradley and Groden Center officials.

Affirmative Action Concerns…

The school committee was in agreement that the school department should work in collaboration with the city affirmative action officer, Elmer Pina. Recently it has appeared that the school department affirmative action policy has been dormant.

Member Steve Furtado indicated that the policy be re-visited and that the committee accept Pina’s offer to assist. “We need to rewrite our policy to align with federal and state guidelines. Mr. Pina will take on this effort to assist us at no cost to the school department,” said Furtado. In a twist of fate, the city council is actually considering that this position be cut back or even eliminated.

Elmer Pina is the only minority male working at city hall. The high school’s only minority administrator - John Craig, who is black, was recently laid off.

One school web site ad is in…

Chrissy Rossi reported that one local business has signed on to pay for a web ad.

The Children’s Workshop, a local daycare center, will sponsor an ad on each of the city’s middle school web sites. The school

department lists the following fee menu for potential vendors: District and high school websites; one month = $40, three month = $100, twelve month = $400. Fees for Elementary and Middle School Websites are one month = $25 per school, three month= $50 per school and twelve month = $200 per school. The district offers a “special” to advertise on every school web site in the district for one year, for a total of $1200.00. The school committee approved the submission of the Children’s Workshop, keeping to their policy of ‘screening’ all potential advertisements. “I’m thrilled,” said an excited Chrissy Rossi. continued on next page...

East Bay Bike Path and Construction…

While the City of East Providence conducts improvement to the wastewater system, there will be some construction activities in this area. These construction activities may temporarily increase local noise levels, dust and other disturbances. The construction will also restrict access to the East Bay Bike Path, but this will be a temporary disturbance only. When the construction is complete, the bike path will be re-paved and access will return to its current status. AECOM and the Department of Public Works are working to ensure the construction schedule is as least disruptive to residents as possible. Approximately 2.5 miles of the East Bay Bike Path will be closed from the bike path parking lot on Veterans Memorial

Parkway (adjacent to the Metacomet Country Club) to Riverside Square. A new sewer forcemain will be installed in Veterans Memorial Parkway and the East Bay Bike Path. The project will start at Watchemoket Cove, proceed north on Veterans Memorial Parkway to the bike path, and then continue south along the bike path to Washington Ave. Construction should take about 5 months. Schools Monthly Report to Council…

At-Large Councilman, Bill Conley introduced an ordinance which would require the finance director of the School Department to provide a monthly report of detailed expenditures to the city finance director. According to Conley “the purpose of this ordinance is to improve the City’s ability to efficiently and effectively monitor its budget revenues and expenditures.”

The Finance Director for the City of East Providence School Department shall “provide a monthly financial report to the Finance Director of the City of East Providence. Said monthly financial report shall at a minimum show budget to actual cumulative expenditures for each month,” listed the ordinance wording. “We need this to help manage and prevent any further deficit problems,” added Conley. The report shall list each budget line item by account number and title and shall identify the appropriations, encumbrances, expenditures and account balance for the current fiscal year. This shall also be provided to the City Council and the School Committee according to Conley. The ordinance provides that this shall be provided by the School Department Finance Director to the City Finance Director “no later than 14 days after the close of the previous month.”

Mayor Rogers said that he heard from some school committee members who thought the measure would be “a hindrance and impossible to do”. School Committee member Steve Furtado advised the council that “I understand what Mr. Conley wants but there is a state requirement mandating a report of well over 100 pages. I would like a stipulation that you just need an overall report and not the more detailed.” Conley maintained that the city needed this ordinance as worded and after discussion, all parties agreed and the Conley ordinance was unanimously approved.

Bill Conley, still upset that “the former city council evidently went to the state to raise taxes beyond the cap. They (former council) blew through that tax hike last year in secret. They went from 4.5% to 8.7%.” The City Council shall follow the highest standards of transparency regarding taxation when adopting its annual budget, said the Conley ordinance. State law allows a municipality to request a waiver from the maximum tax levy and impose a larger tax, but the law requires an affirmative vote of at least four-fifths of the full membership of the city council. “That document doesn’t exist in City Hall,” said Conley.

Mayor Rogers asked finance director Ellen V. Eggeman if a waiver was requested officially last year. Eggeman said former manager Richard Brown requested it, but she was not aware of any council vote. City Clerk Kim A. Casci said “there was no vote.” “I know, I researched thoroughly, there was no vote,” added Conley emphatically. “When current finance director Eggeman asked the state for any records, we were given unsigned documents requesting this tax cap waiver. The letter from the state granting approval was addressed and given directly to former Mayor Joe Larisa.

This was done in September, before the budget was completed,” disclosed Conley. “My gosh,” said Conley. Rogers said former council members Coogan, DiTraglia and Perry told him they knew nothing about this and would not have supported it. The Conley ordinance was passed unanimously.

Save Our Town Now!

I urge all of the residents of the City of East Providence to contact their State Reps, State Senators and City Councilmen to urge that they support the recent proposals to the State and municipal pension systems in Rhode Island. A recent news item on Channel 10 warned that the City of East Providence could very well be the next Central Falls. It is incumbent upon every tax payer in this city to urge that our elected officials at both the state and local level get on board and support this vital legislation.

No one wants to see retirees suffer, but to do nothing will have a far more drastic effect on those people than the reform measures being proposed. Left unchecked the system (state and city) will be bankrupt. Then where will those pensions come from?

Most likely a “receiver” will decide as has been done in Central Falls. I’m sure no one wants to see that happen. Call and write your elected officials now! To do nothing is living with your head in the sand.

Where Is The Townie Pride?

I just wanted to let David Sullivan know I very much enjoyed what he had to say in the September letters to the editor and I couldn’t agree more with what he had to say. Perhaps David would like to schedule monthly meetings for the residents of East Providence and Riverside to discuss these kinds of issues.

I have been a resident of Riverside for 28 years now and I am very disturbed with the City’s failure to take care of its appearance cosmetically. Seems like nothing is manicured nicely like it was years ago. Streets are not being cleaned often enough and the streets and sidewalks are falling apart, weeds everywhere. I do not see that driving through this city is pleasing to the eye, unlike our neighbor (Barrington) who seems to always maintain their appearance.

A Caring Business

I am writing to you about a local restaurant. The name of the restaurant is M and M. The location is on Waterman Ave., East Providence. I go there for coffee and breakfast in the morning. The restaurant is very near to the bus stop for Martin Jr. High. The owners, Paul Mello and Bobby Medeiros allow the children to wait inside their restaurant while waiting for the bus. In the rain, or snow, cold or warm, the children come in.

The children are very well behaved. The owners require good behavior. I don’t know of any other place in East Providence that does this for our children. M and M has wonderful food. They are very clean and friendly. They are local young men who are very friendly and caring. Our children are the future. I’m sure they and their parents are very thankful for M and M restaurant.

City and school officials have been “great” said Estrella. “The superintendent has written a letter of support and the city/schools buildings and grounds director has been a major help. Edward Catelli has offered to help a lot and has already started planning for traffic patterns in the area,”

she said. Estrella means business as she has begun the process of seeking grant funding, similar to that of Waddington and Kent Heights. “Some have told me good luck and they think this will be an uphill battle, but I’m starting to see some momentum build,” she smiled while walking the property.

The Orlo committee will seek grant funding from the same KaBoom/Dr. Pepper/Snapple foundation which helped Waddington and Kent Heights. Orlo is also seeking funding from The Clorox Company’s ‘Power A Bright Future’ grant program. An excerpt from an Orlo fundraising letter states, ‘As school budgets nationwide continue to shrink, The Clorox Company’s Power A Bright Future grant program steps in to help fund new or ongoing programs that allow children to play, create and explore.’ Estrella and Teves want your votes. “After a competitive national nomination period, now it is time for our community to show its support. Help Orlo Avenue School win up to $50,000 by casting votes starting Oct. 24, 2011!” exclaims the Orlo letter. Clorox’s judging panel, will select one additional lucky school to win a $25,000 judge’s choice grant. Orlo Avenue School can be one of only five schools nationwide to win a grant.

There will also be several local fund raising efforts. The community is invited to attend the Toe Jam Puppet Band concert, which will perform at Orlo on Friday, November 4th. Estrella and her volunteers will also be at the annual EP-LaSalle Thanksgiving Day football game seeking donations. “If everyone coming to the game gives us one dollar, we could raise thousands!” anticiExpires 12/15/11 pated Estrella. The project is a family affair as Estrella’s husband; Lenny will help with major construction needs. “My husband works for East Side Construction, and they will donate labor and trucks to excavate,” she said. “The city will help with removing debris and we can get this done!” The group has a facebook page and should be setting up a pay pal donation link. Welcome to our new City Manager, Peter Graczykowski who took office on October 7. It took both the Search Committee and the City Council many hours, weeks and months of meetings and interviews in order to choose the right person. We saved the taxpayers about $18,000 a year by way of a reduction of the amount of salary offered and agreed upon by this new City Manager. Peter also comes in without a contract, only a signed agreement! Our City Manager was immediately thrown into the middle of the budgetary process and by the time this is printed, we should be settled.

Mr. Graczykowski has already brought many new ideas to the table and is moving forward with all previously proposed areas of consolidation. He comes with many diverse qualifications – Deputy City Manager, Department of Public Works, Human Resources, Law and a lot of financial experience. Peter promised to have an open door policy for all residents of the City of East Providence and is very sincere about being a driving force in moving our City forward to help all of us reach our goals and objectives and to restore Townie Pride in our community which seems to have been fading during the past administration; an administration that left our City in a financial mess and nearly fiscally devastated. We can never let this happen to East Providence again! With Peter Graczykowski at the helm and the City Council working together, it shouldn’t and won’t. Peter will provide this City Council with the direction and guidance which no one else was able to provide.

November usually brings cooler weather, the approach of the Holidays and thoughts of family and friends. This Thanksgiving I am most thankful for the working relationship that the City Council and City Manager have established, and for the Department and Division Heads and all City employees. Wave to Santa and his Boat from EP Shoreline

Pomham Santa is scheduled to make his annual boat trip along the East Providence (Riverside) shoreline on Saturday, November 26, 2011. For the past four years, Santa has visited the area by boat to wave to children and adults along the shoreline. He can also be seen on the East Bay Bike Path when he visits “Lighthouse Cove” and Pomham Rocks Lighthouse in Riverside.

Pomham Santa and his elves can be seen from the beach at Rose Larisa Park on Bullocks Point Avenue around 10:15 a.m. They will then travel down to Sabin Point Park on Shore Road around 10:30 a.m. to wave to people at the park. If the wind is calm, his hand bell and Christmas music can be heard coming from his boat.

Santa will not be going ashore during his visit.

Members of the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse will be at Sabin Point Park at 10:00 a.m. to greet visitors with complimentary hot chocolate and treats for the kids as they wait to wave to Pomham Santa. Bring a camera for photo taking and jingle bells if you want Santa to hear you from his boat.

Industrial Community: Phillipsdale Historic District Listed On National Register

A mill village in East Providence has received federal recognition for its contributions to the history of local industry, architecture, and community development. Edward F. Sanderson, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, announced that the National Park Service has added the Phillipsdale Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register is the Federal Government’s official list of properties throughout the United States whose historical and architectural significance makes them worthy of preservation.

The Phillipsdale Historic District is a distinctive mill village whose development was led by three large manufacturing companies from the 1850s to the 1900s. That legacy, coupled with other buildings erected between the 18th and 20th centuries, provide Phillipsdale with an interesting variety of engineering innovations, building types and architectural styles.

Located on the east side of the Seekonk River in northern East Providence, the Phillipsdale Historic District is a small mill village containing approximately 80 acres of land and water, including three industrial sites and a mill pond. Among the other built features are a dam, a railroad bridge, 75 workers’ houses, 30 other houses, 3 former stores, a church, and a former school. For much of the neighborhood’s early history, this was a rural area with scattered farmsteads. The oldest surviving building in the historic district is the Edwards-Carpenter-Sherman House originally built ca. 1750 as a store.

Industrial development in the area began with the construction of water-powered grist mills, and saw mills in the 17th and 18th centuries, followed by cotton mills by the early 1800s. The Rumford Chemical Works developed a plant nearby in 1857 and building included residences like the Joseph B. Fitts House (ca. 1860) and the A.B. Carpenter House (ca. 1870) and School No. 9 (1879-80).

However, Phillipsdale, as a defined community with its own identity separate from Rumford, did not exist prior to the arrival of the Richmond Paper Company in 1883. The company constructed a paper mill, a dam and a mill pond, which precipitated Phillipsdale’s development as a distinct mill village. Between 1893 and 1910, American Electrical Works, its affiliate Washburn Wire Company, and the Glenlyon Bleacheries built or expanded sizeable manufacturing plants on the Seekonk River, and became among the largest employers in East Providence, with more than 2000 workers among them. Founded by Eugene F. Phillips, American Electrical Works (AEW) established its plant here in 1893. By 1902 construction had begun on the first of 34 AEW’s one- and two-family workers’ houses. The firm recorded the “Phillipsdale Plat” with 90 house lots in 1927. continued on next page...

The Washburn Wire Company built an open-hearth furnace and wire mill just east of AEW’s plant in 1901. Washburn Wire expanded quickly, and some of their workers moved Established in 1940, 3rd Generation into AEW housing. The company that built the largest amount of worker housing in the historic district was Glenlyon Bleacheries. Soon after their plant opened in 1899, the firm erected 42 new units of worker housing. They added several more units of two-family housing between 1913 and 1927 and laid out another plat in 1927.

Funding the Program

All training and tracking equipment have been provided to the East Providence Police Department by SafetyNet at no cost to the department or taxpayers. SafetyNet is proud to be offering a “Race to Keep Safe” promotional event for East Providence residents through October 15, 2011. East Providence residents who enroll prior to this date receive the bracelet for free and six months of service free, a $300 value.

RI State Representative Helio Melo and RI State Senator Daniel DaPonte have secured $3000 in legislative grant funds for the East Providence Police Department to help defray the cost of this program for residents after the completion of the SafetyNet promotional period.

How SafetyNet Works

Once caregivers enroll their loved ones in the service, they receive a SafetyNet Bracelet, which is worn by the person at risk typically on their wrist or ankle. The caregiver provides information about the client to assist in search and rescue, which is then entered into a secure database. Lojack SafetyNet, Inc. provides 24x7 emergency caregiver support.

The SafetyNet bracelet emits a radio frequency signal that unlike cellular and GPS technology, doesn’t rely on cellular networks or satellite signals. This allows it to be tracked when a client wanders into a shallow body of water, a densely wooded area, or a concrete or steel structure.

The search and rescue equipment used by the East Providence Police Department can detect radio frequency signal emitted from the bracelet with a range of approximately one mile on the ground and 5-7 miles from a helicopter. SafetyNet’s secure database contains information on each individual client enrolled in the service so that the search and rescue team can have the most up to date information on the person’s habits and how her or she should be approached, spoken to, and comforted.

City of East Providence Fiscal Status

East Providence, October 17, 2011: The City of East Providence and School Committee officials met with the State of Rhode Island Auditor General on October 13, 2011 to discuss the progress of the deficit reduction plan. The plan previously submitted was not approved by the State in July 2011, as the proposed payments were not equal or decreasing over time. Since there is a projected deficit on the School side of the budget in both current and future fiscal years, and the City’s bond rating was consequently downgraded; under Rhode Island General Laws Ch. 45-9, the State may appoint a fiscal overseer, a budget commission or receiver. Before any such steps are taken, however, the City and Schools will be working on a unified, 5-year deficit elimination plan due for the State’s approval in the beginning of November. “It is extremely important that the School Committee make difficult decisions in addressing its deficit,” said City Manager Peter Graczykowski, “The City will work closely with the Schools and the Office of Auditor General to propose additional means to eliminate the future deficits for approval by the State to avoid any potential state intervention in the City’s internal matters.”

“Incredible Years”: Bradley Hospital offers new parent group for school age children

“Incredible Years” is a group for parents of children between the ages of 6 and 12 who become easily frustrated when things do not go their way, have trouble regulating their emotions and who often refuse to do what adults ask. Parents, who will be divided into two age groups (children 6-8 years and 9-12 years), will learn strategies to not only reduce unwanted behaviors but also increase desired behaviors, such as following directions and tolerating frustration.

The groups will meet weekly for three months, and children do not need to be a patient at Bradley Hospital for parents to participate. All parents and/or parental figures are invited. Calling all “teens” who used to hang out in the late sixties and seventies at Kent Field playground on Clyde Avenue in East Providence. If you are one of the hundreds of former kids who have fond memories of “The Field”, then you may want to keep the Thanksgiving week-end open for an informal reunion of sorts. A group of friends from “The Field” have been organizing a get-together for Friday evening November 25, 2011 at Bovi’s Town Tavern.

The group has a Facebook page listing close to 90 members and includes several pictures from the 70’s. A message on Facebook says; “This group is dedicated to all the people who enjoyed spending time at Kent Field during the late 60’s and early 1970’s.

Whether you came to the field to play sports, games, enjoy after hours events or all of the above, you are welcome to participate in this group. Please feel free to invite others. Who knows, maybe some sort of reunion down the road?” ‘The Field’ is how the Kent Heights playground was exclusively referred to by this group of friends. If a student in junior or senior high school told a friend, “see you at ‘The Field’, it was clearly understood that Kent Field was the place. “The day after thanksgiving has been a day when people from the classes of 72, 73, 74 would meet at Bovi’s. It’s a Friday night. Always a good time,” said Steve Sullivan on “The Field” Facebook page.

It was an era of vinyl lp’s, 45’s and stereo receivers. The music of the day would vary from Jimi Hendrix to the Beatles to the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin or Led Zepplin. No one had cell phones or computers or iPods, etc. In East Providence, in the 60’s and 70’s, this group of young people would often meet at “The Field” every day after school and on week-ends. Kids came from all over the city, not just the Kent Heights neighborhood. Although a friendly rivalry existed between those who ‘hung out’ at “The Rec” in Riverside and Pierce Field, all paths crossed eventually at Kent.

Many references in yearbooks from the era mentioned “The Field” as a good time memory.

Sports were a big reason for many at “The Field”. There were daily football, baseball, basketball and street-hockey games - depending on the season. “…was just at Greggs with a bunch of guys talking about the pickup baseball games on the top of the hill and how Greg Anderson and George LaCross were always hitting the houses across Clyde Avenue. Laughed all night telling KF stories,” said a Joe Botelho Facebook post. George LaCross reminisces that “after the two Little League fields got too small for us, we moved our pick-up baseball games to the large open field up top. No backstop, or cut-out infield, but we made due. A ball hit over the tennis court fence was a home run to left field and onto Clyde Ave on the fly was a home run to right field.” A lot of the sports centered on spirited games of whiffle-ball played on the basketball or tennis courts. uniforms, there were no umpires and nobody particularly in charge. They just showed up and played ball, usually until after dark. It wasn’t all sports as many came by just to ‘hang’ or play cards and knock-hockey board games and listen to music. “I remember Arts & Crafts and cheerleading. I was from the other side of Pawtucket Avenue, long walk!” joked Jane Tuckerman O’Brien.

This reunion of “The Field” kids from the 60-70’s may even broaden the membership of that famous playground. As word of a “Field” reunion moves around the community, some who only stopped by Kent Field in passing, may have a renewed interest. Jennifer Van Amburgh Moody saw the Facebook invitation and said “thanks for the invite! I never hung out at Kent Field except as a little kid for the playground, but it’s never too late, right?” “Right,” says reunion organizer James Vierra. Vierra, who still lives in the Kent Heights neighborhood, has been a major force behind “The Field” Thanksgiving Friday get-together. Vierra created the ‘Friends of Kent Field’ Facebook page as a way of organizing and contacting old friends of “The Field” who may not live in the area now in addition to those still in EP. “This will be an informal reunion, if you will, just a get together of old friends from the “Field” days. Nothing fancy, just a good time at Bovi’s Tavern on the Friday night before Thanksgiving,” Vierra told the Reporter. Facebook posts have come in from Florida and other states. Bovi’s plays a major part in Townie history as historically, many high school classes and groups of friends have always met there to keep old friendships alive. Thanksgiving week-end, in particular, is a time when many locals and those who live out of state, get together and look to meet up with old friends. There will be talk of Townie football for sure, but this year the focus may be a rekindling of “The Field” magic from years ago.

This November Come to The Next Heart of Worship Event

By Brian Lowney A new event at St. Brendan’s Church in Riverside, called the Heart of Worship, is making an impact in the east bay. It combines in one program ancient practices with modern elements such as contemporary praise and worship music….Seems simple enough. But it is this simple recipe of ancient and modern which has attendees experiencing God in a way they may never have before.

According to Victor Bergeron, a popular musician from St. Brendan’s , who plays at the events, the secret of the event comes down to this: When we open our heart to God, he fills the void. According to Victor, the Heart of Worship was set up to allow participants to have a “personal, emotional” experience of God in the Eucharist; one where people see the reality of God. Sam Seda, 36, a St. Brendan parishioner said that he felt “like a changed person” after attending the first Heart of Worship Event in August. “It was just an experience that I never had before,” Seda acknowledged. “My relationship with God was expanded.”

He summed it up by saying, “It was an indescribable experience.

The ambiance was so holy.”

Seda’s wife Veronica said it was the first time she’s attended Eucharistic Adoration. “It was an emotional night,” she reflected.

It took them less than a year. Less than a year to fire the three top people in the city and school department “without cause” (that is, for political reasons) and pay several hundred thousand dollars to do so; less than a year to give away millions in city taxpayer money to the fire union and city custodians; less than a year to mess up a city budget that was left balanced by the prior council and school committee (and with an expected city surplus) for fiscal year 2011 – and now, less than a year to become a Rhode Island embarrassment as the State threatens to take over East Providence because your elected officials refuse to cut expenses to balance their budget. They undid the plan to eliminate the prior deficit and now expect new deficits of millions more each year for years to come, triggering the State’s wrath. As one very high ranking State official recently asked, “What the heck is going on in East Providence?”

Your “new and improved” council and school committee is decimating the city – that’s what is going on. Let us not forget that when the last council and school committee took office had it a lot worse than this one. We faced a $5.1 million accumulated deficit, and then saw the State take away almost all state aid and reduce school aid over our two years in office (to the tune of well over $2 million a year). We faced completely unaffordable employee contracts with buy backs and no copays for teachers, and police and fire contracts that needed major change. Like your present elected officials, we faced three choices: 1) increase property taxes by over 10% to make up the shortfall; 2) fight for economic justice by cutting employee costs by millions on the school and city side; or 3) let the State come in and increase taxes by double digits and/or put us into bankruptcy.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the unions, we made the tough choice to cap property tax increases at 3.5% and cut employee costs by nearly $6 million a year to balance the city budget.

Yes, that is correct – $6 million a year, with over $4 million coming from the school department. We cut teacher salaries by 5%, increased copays from 0% to 20%, eliminated “buybacks,” got police department savings by reducing department size (but not patrols) by over a dozen officers, and many other major expense reductions (and we were fighting for a fair fire contract when we left office). We faced union protests and pickets and hostile meetings, but we held firm and did the right thing for the taxpayers of East Providence. Along the way, the kids benefitted from innovative new programs and technology, seniors from the property tax cap and an expanded senior center, and everyone was spared draconian cuts to city programs. We made the tough cuts not because we wanted to, but because we had to, as a matter of fundamental fairness.

We had a 4 year plan, however, to pay this off with the schools using all new State aid to pay off the deficit, along with meals tax money. It was enough to pay it off, but the State wanted more up front. Had we come back, we would have easily fixed it. We would have had extra revenue this year and there was no more EP state aid to be cut. And our school committee would have balanced their budget as they did Since 1986 Fred Vinhateiro this year. November 2011 The Reporter with the total not adding up to the amount of one of the cuts we made. The one large cut – the $710,000 city contribution to our public libraries, is a problem under state law, and may well have a devastating effect on our library system that is used by many Townies.

The school committee is even worse. The massive new deficit comes from them, but unlike their predecessors, they expect hard hit Townie taxpayers to pay for it.

So when you hear your current council and school committee members blame the present crisis on others, the truth is that to find the real culprits all they really need to do is look in a mirror. * Joe Larisa served four terms as Mayor of East Providence, a position elected by the Council from among its members. His latest term ended on December 1, 2010. He also served as councilman at large for the City from 1992-2002 and 2004-06 and 2008-10.

It may not be an easy process, but when you have others who have gone through what you are going through, it can help for peers to answer questions, and see that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Recently one of our clients suggested that he would like to write an advice column on issues he has faced, in the hopes of encouraging others. In his first column, Austin discusses smoking cessation.

“Quitting smoking was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

2011 Create a show-stopping centerpiece.

Adding centerpieces, whether one large arrangement or a series of small vases or candles, can help dress up any room. Arrangements made from pine, holly, or berry branches tie nicely to the holiday season and can be found at any craft store. As an alternative, make an arrangement of pomegranates, cloves, and oranges to provide a pleasant and fresh scent.

Warm up by the fire. If you have a fireplace in your home, lighting it during gatherings provides an intimate and cozy glow. If you have not used the fireplace in a while, make sure you open the flue.

Then add newspaper and wood logs. Plan to light the fireplace 15-20 minutes before guests arrive.

Arrange a festive soundtrack. Music is an essential component of any successful holiday party. Organize CD’s ahead of time or make a digital playlist on your mp3 player so you’re ready to push play and get the party started as soon as your guests walk in the door.

Freshen up after the revelry. When the party has died down and it’s clean up time, check areas around the house for messy remnants from the celebration. In particular, carpets may appear dirty from heavy foot traffic. Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda over carpets, let sit for fifteen minutes, and then vacuum up. Baking soda will help neutralize any lingering odors in the carpet.

(Family Features) Jewelry can be a great holiday gift to receive, but for many, buying jewelry to give is intimidating. What kind of jewelry should you buy? What size? Will it look good on her? Will he like it? For anyone facing these questions, this guide is for you.

Materials

To make sure you buy a quality piece that will last, you need to know a little about what jewelry is made of. The three most common metals used include: Gold. When you see the word “gold” by itself on a piece, it means all gold, or 24-karat gold. Twenty-four-karat gold is soft, so it’s usually mixed with other metals to make it more durable. Fourteen-karat jewelry contains 14 parts gold mixed with 10 parts of a base metal.

The higher the karat rating, the higher the proportion of gold.

Sterling silver. This term describes a piece that contains 92.5 percent silver. Sometimes they are marked “925,” which means 925 parts per thousand are pure silver. “Coin silver” is used for compounds that contain 90 percent silver.

Platinum. Platinum is a natural, white-colored, precious metal that is often described as being strong, durable and corrosion resistant. It’s usually mixed with other similar metals, such as iridium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium.

Rings

Rings draw attention to the hands, so it’s important to pick a flattering style.

The length of the fingers is an important factor when buying rings. People with long fingers can wear almost any style. If his or her long fingers are very thin, look for oval or round settings and wider bands. Short fingers look best with settings that don’t extend past the knuckle - that only accentuates the shortness of the fingers. Earrings

Earrings for women should balance the shape of the face. Once you know her face shape, buying earrings is easy.

Oval faces can wear almost any earring style. Hoops and triangles are especially flattering.

Round faces beg for longer earrings with oblong or straight styles. Avoid round and chunky earrings that sit on the ear lobe.

Square faces look best in hoops, ovals and small earrings. Avoid short and chunky earrings because they can make the face look wider.

C h r is tmas Ornament The Rumford Lions have unveiled the design for their 4th annual Christmas Ornament. It is a beautiful Christmas wreath crossed with a banner embossed with the words Townie Pride. As in previous years there is a limited supply so get your orders in early.

Several of our members had been approach by people who did not place their orders in past years until the ornaments were sold out. Consequently we have ordered a limited supply of the ornaments from the prior three years. In 2008 the ornament was the East Providence High School Clock Tower, 2009 was the Main Gate at Pierce Field, and 2010 was Weaver Library. All four ornaments are pictured below. Festival of Lights in Historic Wickford Village Celebrates 26th year

The festival begins on Thursday, December 1 with the official lighting of the Tree at Updike Park and a performance by the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus and the Lafayette Band.

Thousands of white lights sparkle and set the streets aglow as the village is transformed into a winter wonderland. Window shop as store-owners show off their Christmas spirit with holiday displays and compete for awards.

On Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon welcome Santa at the town dock as he arrives by boat aboard the Sea Princess. Join him for carols and a horse drawn hayride through town. There will be music and dancing to entertain shoppers throughout the weekend. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa from the Boy Scouts and sample delicious foods at Wickford’s many restaurants. Go back in time to holiday shopping as it used to be, unhurried, with a focus on personal service and unique selections.

Many shops will be open until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.

PAC’s Popular 10X10X10 Exhibit

The Pawtucket Arts Collaborative will once again holds its highly anticipated and popular 10x10x10 Exhibit for art lovers and holiday shoppers in the PAC Gallery at 175 Main Street in downtown Pawtucket.

The artwork in the show is restricted in size to 10 inches. Twodimensional work must be 10” x 10” while three-dimensional work is no larger than 10”x10”x10”. And, best of all, all art in the sale is $150 and is tax free. The sale is a wonderful opportunity for the public to purchase work by well-known area artists for a greatly discounted price.

The public is invited to preview the works beginning October 30 in the PAC gallery located at 175 Main Street, Pawtucket. The art sale will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. on November 10 at the opening reception. Visitors should come early because a line typically forms at the doors. Purchased works can be picked up prior to the holidays, so they make great gifts. A portion of the proceeds from the show benefit PAC; it is the organization’s largest source of annual revenue.

The Lions Club of Rumford is sponsoring a Ham & Bean Supper on Sunday November 13th. The food will be served between 5:00 and 7:00 PM at the Santa Maria Club, 846 Broadway in East Providence. The meal will consist of Baked Ham, Beans, Cole Slaw and all the trimmings, including a Make Your Own Sundae Dessert Bar. Lions Peter Barilla and John Barone, who have both rated “Top Chefs” by fellow Lions, will be preparing the meal using family favorite recipes. A giant raffle will be held following dinner.

All proceeds will help provide groceries and turkeys and hams to be distributed to local families at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Thanksgiving Donations Encouraged For Tap-In Registration has begun for East Bay area clients of Tap-In to receive Thanksgiving Baskets. The agency plans to assist 425 families and individuals this year, and is hoping for the wonderful support it has received in the past from the community to help fulfill that need.

Distribution will take place on Sat., Nov. 19 so it is requested that donations be in by Wed, Nov. 16.

Each bag will contain the basics for a nice traditional meal and will include corn, green beans, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, canned fruit, instant potatoes, a dessert item such as brownies, and a loaf of homemade pumpkin bread baked by volunteers. A $15 Shaws Gift Card will be provided toward the purchase of a turkey.

Also, in an effort to encourage clients to start bringing in reusable bags Tap-In is hoping donors might bring their items in them for use in the distribution.

Also, the colder weather has meant a greatly increased demand on the housewares closet for sheets, blankets and comforters particularly in full/queen and king sizes.

Donations of any of these items will be very welcome, and may be dropped off during regular office hours 9 to noon, Monday through Friday. Unfortunately, due to lack of refrigeration NO perishable items may be accepted.

Why should SHE pay for HIS tax break?

The General Assembly slashed $24 million from programs for the developmentally disabled, while preserving costly tax breaks for the wealthiest Rhode Islanders.

Over the last few decades, Rhode Island has established a model of community-based programs where the developmentally disabled can lead lives of dignity and meaning, remaining closer to their families and more integrated with society. The General Assembly's cuts have already led to layoffs at some agencies, which hurts the overall quality of care.

These programs have struggled with meager funding–and $24 million in cuts will mean the reduction of day programs and activities, lay-offs of direct care staff, and a deterioration in the quality of care that we have achieved for our consumers. Seven Hills Rhode Island (Woonsocket) and the ARC of Blackstone Valley (Pawtucket) are already being negatively impacted by the cuts.

But there is hope. We have just learned that RI has millions of dollars in budget surplus for 2011. Instead of continuing to use this money to fund massive tax breaks for millionaires and large corporations, shouldn't we be restoring the critical programs that give our most vulnerable citizens the care and support they need?

University News McDaniel College welcomes freshman Kent Hu of East Providence

Westminster, MD - Kent Hu of East Providence is a freshman at McDaniel College. The 440-strong Class of 2015 represents an impressive array of diversity, scholarship and leadership: - Three-fourths performed community service and half held leadership roles during their high school years.

- 40 percent are the first in their families to attend college.

- 38 percent come from out-of-state.

- The Class of 2015 represents 25 states stretching from Washington state to California to Florida to Vermont.

Fr. Louis Guanella in 1912 during his visit to U.S.A.

On October 23rd, our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI canonized as a “Saint”, the Italian priest, Blessed Louis Guanella. Fr. Guanella founded two religious congregations, both of whom are represented in the Diocese of Providence. They are the Servants of Charity who have the care of Sacred Heart Parish in East Providence and the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence who also serve at Sacred Heart in the school.

Fr. Guanella was born in northern Italy in 1842 and was ordained a priest in May of 1886. He dedicated his life and energy to the most needy of God’s people: young children, the elderly, and the mentally and physically challenged who at that time were the castoffs of society. His great love for God’s people came from his love and devotion of God as Father of all. He relied on Providence to supply what was lacking and Providence never failed him.

During his life, he was greatly misunderstood by many including his bishop and the hierarchy of the Church. He confided always in the Provident Father and waited for God’s “moment of mercy” to begin his work. During his lifetime he saw his work spread throughout Italy, Switzerland and even reach the United States.

His Priests, Brothers, and Sisters now work in Italy, Switzerland, North and South America, the Philippines, India, Romania, Germany and the Holy Land.

Fr. Guanella died on October 24, 1915. He was beatified in Rome by Pope Paul VI in 1964. The miracle that was approved for his canonization took place in Philadelphia, PA. The young man who was the recipient of that grace will be going to Rome with the Rhode Island delegation led by Fr. Peter DiTulio, SC.

East Providence Science Test Scores Up

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) issued a press release last month which praised a few R.I. schools for improving science scores. According to Elliot Krieger of RIDE, nearly 1 of 3 Rhode Island students (32 percent) achieved proficiency on the 2011 New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) science assessments, an improvement of 3 percentage points over last year’s results. Commissioner of Education, Deborah Gist held a news conference at Mt. Hope High School to recognize the significant improvement in its scores, up 17 points to 37 percent proficient. The East Providence School District, which showed significant gains at EPHS and Riverside Middle, both, since last year’s assessments and since the first NECAP science assessments, in 2008, was singled out by the state Commissioner for its’ significant gains in two grade levels. EP’s Martin Middle school also saw gains of over 6% in science NECAPS. Gist also praised East Greenwich High School and the Westerly school district, along with the Reservoir Avenue School, in Providence.

“It also bears noting that East Providence and Westerly were the only districts in the state to have more than one grade level achieve statistically significant gains in science from 2010 to 2011 and also from 2008 to 2011,” Gist said in her press release. The high school’s increase of over 28% was better than the state average.

EPHS science department chair Kim Laliberte told the school committee in October that “the high school science scores are above the state average and significantly higher than we’ve ever been before. All students improved including special needs and across all levels,” said Laliberte. “We have completely changed our instruction and testing and have great collaboration between special needs and content teachers. This has directly impacted scores since we were a pilot in year 2008,” Laliberte continued.

EPHS principal Janet Sheehan also praised students and staff in discussing the NECAP results. “Our faculty instruction has been excellent. Good things are happening here. We are all on the same page in the high school,” said Sheehan. “This work has been exhausting and mentally draining for all, but worth it,” said Laliberte.

Attending the statewide press conference was Governor Lincoln Chafee who said “I congratulate our Rhode Island teachers and our students for the improvements on the state science assessments,” As we continue to move forward with our plan for transforming education in Rhode Island, we hope to see improvements every year.” One state educational official who, although pleased, gave cautious praise by saying “though I am pleased by the gradual improvement in science scores, I am concerned that only one-third of our student population has achieved proficiency in science,” said George D. Caruolo, Chairman of the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education. “Proficiency in science is essential if our students are to succeed in the high-technology fields that are likely to be the economic growth areas in Rhode Island. We are moving in the right direction, but we have a long road ahead as we strive to advance achievement for all students,” added Caruolo. Gist seemed to agree by saying “we fully recognize the importance of science achievement for all students as they prepare for college and for challenging careers in our global economy” “I am very proud to work with the students, faculty and parents and all staff at our high school,” said Sheehan.

The Ocean State Montessori School will hold a special RibbonCutting Ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 20th. on the school premises at 100 Grove Avenue in East Providence. Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc Girl Scouts Overhauls Badges To Strengthen Leadership Skills in Girls

Providence, RI (October 17, 2011) — Girl Scouts of the USA, which enters its 100th anniversary year in 2012, is rolling out an all-new collection of badges aimed at giving girls the skills they need to succeed.

Girls can still earn popular long-time badges such as Cook, Naturalist, and Athlete − topics as relevant today as they were in 1912 − but now they also have badges such as Product Designer, Digital Movie Maker, Customer Loyalty, and even the Science of Happiness. And new “Make Your Own” badges at every level give girls the opportunity to explore any interest they choose.

“Girls told us they want more challenge, and we’ve responded with substantive, focused, fun new badge offerings that will prepare girls for lifelong success,” said Kathy Cloninger, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of the USA. “What we need today are more adult volunteers to help girls bring these leadership experiences to life.”

Badges now come in categories: Legacy, Financial Literacy, Cookie Business, Skill-Building, and Make Your Own. The new badge portfolio, called The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, also complements GSUSA’s National Leadership Journeys, which help girls explore how to be leaders in their own lives and in the world around them as they take on projects to prevent bullying, protect the environment, and more.

The Girl Scout organization has transformed itself in recent years to focus on leadership development for girls in the 21st century, and the new badge offerings reflect that transformation. “The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting builds the critical thinking, creativity, and entrepreneurship that the next generation of leaders will need to make the world a better place,” said Cloninger.

The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting has found immediate, widespread acceptance in the Girl Scouting community. The initial press run of 850,000 copies has all but sold out.

Thanksgiving Day Football A Thanksgiving Rivalry For the Ages!

By Bob Rodericks It officially began in 1929 making the East Providence - LaSalle Thanksgiving Day football rivalry the oldest in Rhode Island.

Although the two schools started turkey day play in 1927 (EP won 6-0), there was no game in 1928 and the league “started” in 1929 with a LaSalle 19-6 win. The 2011 EP-LaSalle game at Pierce Stadium will mark the 83rd consecutive year that the Townies will take on the Rams of LaSalle. If you talk to graduates from either school you invariably hear a similar comment - throw away all statistics Thanksgiving Day. For this is Red Sox-Yankees or Celtics-Lakers or Providence College - U.R.I. To many football players and alumni, especially at EPHS, the season isn’t a success without a victory on Thanksgiving.

During this storied 82 year history several ‘underdog’ teams on either side have pulled off the upset win. Unlike many of the other high school Thanksgiving Day rivalries in Rhode Island, the EP-LaSalle game often has direct impact on the state championship playoff system. For some it doesn’t affect their league standings, but for these two powerhouses, Thanksgiving can make or break the season. It usually means the possibility of playing three tough games within an 8 or 9 day window with the interscholastic playoff schedule.

This year is another banner year for both football teams. Going into the Thanksgiving Game, LaSalle and East Providence are both headed for the playoffs. LaSalle is a favorite of many observers to win it all this year while EP has struggled at times to maintain its’ winning record. LaSalle has dominated the series in recent years with wins in ’04 and ’05 and from ’07 through 2010. LaSalle now leads the series - overall - with 45 wins to the Townies 35 wins with two 0-0 ties. The series has often seen changing momentum swings. From 1929 through 1940 the series pretty much went back and forth between schools. LaSalle dominated the series from 1941 through 1948, winning a state title in 1942. A little

back and forth again and then the Townies won from 1960 through 1967 and then again in ’69 and ’70 and ’72 and ’73. EP won state titles in ’66, ’67 and ’69 and ’70. LaSalle took over and won the 1974, ’75 and ’76 games while EP bounced back to win from 1977 through 1980 and then again from 1982 through 1984. It was an eight year run next for LaSalle as they beat EP from 1985 through 1992. LaSalle spanked EP in 1992 by a 50-6 score but EP returned • over 25 years experience the favor somewhat with a 41-6 victory the next year. Bovi and scores of LaSalle and Townie fans will be there once again this year.

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League has changed the format for high school football through the years. After 1971 the league instituted a playoff system. Even though LaSalle leads EP in the Thanksgiving rivalry, both teams are deadOver 20 Years in Business locked with 15 state championships each.

This year could break that tie as LaSalle is a favorite to win it all but East Providence has a decent chance of going all the way with a talented team itself. “Throw out all the statistics,” said ’61 graduate Charles “Chuck” Hassell. Hassell has been a ‘voice of the Townies’ as he and other volunteers have broadcast Townie football games on cable TV for many years. “I take my Thanksgiving day football very seriously. Former LaSalle left halfback, Bud Cronin is 83 years old today.

Cronin was a star running back for the Rams from 1943-45. He has vivid memories of this rivalry. “We were good my senior year.

We won the state championship and went on to play in a national championship game in New Orleans. We were number one in the country.” Bud Cronin’s father was the legendary LaSalle icon, Jack Cronin. The senior Cronin played for Boston College and the former Steamrollers pro football team. Cronin, Sr. was at LaSalle from 1931 to 1975. “I remember East Providence so well. They were a tough team to get by. We were bigger but we were always told by our coaches that the EP game would be very tough.” remembers the younger Cronin. “East Providence was well coached with Lou Farber. Always good defensively,” he added. “1945 was an extremely frigid game. We switched to sneakers from cleats and didn’t score until late in the game,” said Cronin. Cronin would score the first and what would be the winning touchdown that year in a 13-0 LaSalle win. “It’s nice to be remembered at 83 years old,” said Cronin. “Happy Thanksgiving to all.”

Most young people today are only familiar with the Townies and Rams playing at Pierce Memorial Stadium in East Providence.

However, the series used to alternate between Pierce and Cronin Field behind LaSalle High School on Smith Street in Providence.

At some point in the 1980’s, LaSalle’s stands were condemned for public use and LaSalle would use other Providence fields for Thanksgiving such as Brown Stadium or City or Conley Stadium behind Mt. Pleasant High. LaSalle then thought it less expensive to rent out Pierce from the city of East Providence for their “home” games. Pierce is owned and managed by the city and not the school department. LaSalle liked the arrangement so much that they have used Pierce exclusively for their home Thanksgiving games. This didn’t upset EP fans that have become used to playing in their home Pierce Field every year. This arrangement may not end soon, as even though LaSalle has constructed a new football field with synthetic ‘field turf’, they will not have enough seating to host the thousands who attend every Thanksgiving.

Pierce Memorial Stadium was built under the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal agency of the Federal Government during the 1930’s. Completed in November of 1939, the stadium cost $300,000. The field bears the name of one of East Providence’s most prominent residents, W.B. Pierce who had be-

Beat LaSalle!!! queathed a trust fund to the town specifically for recreational use.

On November 30, 1939 Pierce Memorial Stadium opened to the public in time for the traditional Thanksgiving Day football game between East Providence and La Salle Academy. The Townies won, 10 to 0.

A major reason that Pierce Stadium is considered one of the finest facilities in New England is the dedication of Joseph Medeiros, Pierce Athletic Complex Manager. Since about 1990, Medeiros has kept the grass and entire complex in tip-top shape.

Medeiros has seen it all at Pierce - football, soccer, baseball, tennis, concerts, fireworks, etc. “My best Thanksgiving memory has to be the 2003 game with Jamie Silva of EP and Liam Coen of LaSalle,” said Medeiros. “Coen was a great quarterback and had LaSalle way ahead in the game. But the Townies Jaime Silva (now a pro football player) led EP back from a near loss to a 28-27 overtime win. It was a perfect storm - two great players, two undefeated teams, both meeting head-on,” Medeiros recalled vividly. East Providence went on to win the championship that year.

Many East Providence residents wear two hats in this matchup between these football powers. Edward Cronin (no relation to LaSalle’s Coach Cronin) grew up in EP and attended LaSalle Academy. After college, Cronin became a teacher at EPHS. Cronin was a winning EP coach and became Director of Guidance.

For many years, it was Cronin who would wear red and white and host the annual EP-LaSalle Thanksgiving rally in the school’s gym. Cronin was a very spirited Townie “cheerleader” during his 30 years at EPHS. He is now an administrator at LaSalle - back at his alma mater. “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because that day is all about family, friends, and being grateful,” said Cronin on this rivalry. “For me, the football game is an annual event, but more importantly, Thanksgiving Day is about relationships that have been established over many years. I’m able to connect with classmates from La Salle and graduates from EPHS from my 30 years at the high school. Now, I’m also reconnecting with parents who graduated from EPHS and their children who attend La Salle.

I’m thankful for those relationships. It is that simple for me because it is a day of remembering, interacting with people, and having fun.” finished Cronin. Cronin’s wife, Mary-Ellen graduated from Smithfield High School and the couple’s two children graduated from East Providence. “We all support Townie Pride!”

Another long time fan of this rivalry is 83 year old Charlie Hogan of Cranston. He is a 1946 graduate of LaSalle and avid fan.

“No, I didn’t play but I went to all the games and will never forget the 1945 year for LaSalle. I remember some of the EP players like Gid Spence and Jackie Sullivan - EP had lots of talent. We beat EP in a tough game in which we didn’t score until the 4th quarter.

Our quarterback, Don Panciera, was maybe the best high school QB ever and played the position in the pros,” Hogan went on. “I remember both coaches, Cronin for us and Lou Farber for EP. They were friends and two of the best ever. I am a bit disappointed that LaSalle no longer has a marching band, though. The two bands on the field added so much in those days,” Hogan continued.

Maybe the most recognizable figure at East Providence football games is former head coach and EP Athletic Director, William “Bill” Stringfellow. “I’ve only missed one game in 72 years,” said the iconic Townie football legend. Stringfellow started coaching at EPHS in the fifties and was head coach from 1970 to 1989. “In the early days of this rivalry, not many schools wanted to play LaSalle. We agreed to play them regularly and Jack Cronin said he would always play EP and he respected us,” recalled Stringfellow.

Bill’s wife, Sheila, established a tradition of baking pies for Townie football players during Thanksgiving week. On the Wednesday before the big game, former Townie players and some current, would visit the Stringfellow home and enjoy pie and talk football and family. The Stringfellow tradition continues today with former players from decades ago, still stopping by to pay a visit and have a piece of Thanksgiving pie.

Current Townie head coach, Sandy Gorham, himself a Townie icon, is the EP coach with the most state titles in school history.

“I know our season is judged by Thanksgiving Day. We can go undefeated but to our fans, a loss to LaSalle means our season was a failure,” said Gorham. “This years’ game could be a great one.

LaSalle is an excellent team and they are favored. We have won some sloppy games, but we have some great talent and we won’t back away. We’ll give it our best,” promised Gorham. Gorham played on championship Townie teams in the early seventies.

Make no mistake - the rivalry is intense for many. No game comes close to the attendance numbers that Thanksgiving Day can generate. On a good weather turkey day, close to 8,000 or more fans can attend.

East Providence usually will slightly outdraw the LaSalle fans, even when the games were held at various Providence venues during LaSalle’s home years. But LaSalle also has a sizeable fan base. Occasionally there have been tense moments at some games.

As the final seconds elapsed in 1972, fans rushed the field at Pierce Stadium by the hundreds shoving and pushing each other.

Players, coaches and fans were involved and police had to restore order. A hockey game between the schools for the next night was postponed for several days until tempers cooled down. There were a few other years when more minor skirmishes threatened but for the most part, the series has not seen any trouble for a long time.

It may be that for some time, the football captains and coaches from both schools meet at a pre-Thanksgiving day dinner and show each other mutual respect and talk football. “Not me,” said an EP player from the sixties who spoke to us on the condition of anonymity. “I respect LaSalle a lot, I love the history of the series, but I won’t break bread at the same table! I want to win and on the field is where I want to do it. Do the Red Sox and Yankees share dinner before a big game?” And so it goes, over 80 years of the longest and most competitive football rivalry in the state continues. Martin Middle School: The MMS boys cross country are doing well with a 5-3 record in 3rd place. Martin recorded impressive wins over Kickemuit, Gordon and Thompson in October. They had a 1 point loss to Riverside. The girls cross country is in 7th place with a 2-7 record. They have wins over Gordon and Gaudet.

Boys soccer has a solid 6-3 record for 3rd place so far. They have October wins over Jenks twice, Goff and Thompson. The girls soccer team is also doing well with a 6-4 record. They have defeated Thompson, Goff and Riverside in October. They have 35 points for and only 11 against.

Riverside Middle School: Boys cross country is in a 3 way tie for 4th place with a 4-4 record. They have wins over Martin and Kickemuit last month. Girls cross country is in 4th place with a 6-3 record. They have wins over Gaudet and Martin. Boys soccer has struggled a bit with a 1-7 record while the girls soccer squad is at 4-7 in league play. Local Girls Win Big at Nashua Tournament

The World Cup Soccer Club of Greater Nashua hosted its 29th Annual Columbus Day Invitational Tournament October 8-10, 2011 in Nashua, New Hampshire. This prestigious tournament has grown to become one of the largest invitational tournaments held in New England. This event brought over 250 teams from the Northeast to participate at the highest levels of competition. Competition categories included boys and girls team U-9 through U-14 with divisions within each age group.

To recognize and thank veterans for their dedication and commitment to service, the AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP) is proud to offer a FREE classroom course to ALL veterans, regardless of age, in the month of November.

Any military personnel—active duty, retired, guard, or reserve— are eligible to receive the course. Veterans include those individuals who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard/Reserves, or Coast Guard.

Spouses (including widows and widowers) are eligible to take the course, free of charge, so long as they present a valid military spouse/widower identification, such as a dependent ID card (DD Form 1172), or a membership card to organizations such as the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Vigorous Mind Brain Wellness

At the end of July the Vigorous Mind Program will be up-graded to give our members more. This will require all members to have a new user name and password as well as a short review of the new system. Please come to the Administration Office to schedule a short training. You will like the new program.

Vigorous Mind is a brain wellness program. It is a scientifically based software product offering users a broad brain exercise program that trains multiple cognitive functions.

The program includes a set of brain exercises that trains attention, memory, processing speed, language, number skills, multitasking, reasoning, hand-eye coordination as well as other critically important brain skills. The system adjusts the level of difficulty to your level and lets you view your results and progress over time.

Computers are available daily at the center.

Computer Assistance

Monday, November 28th - 2 to 4 p.m. On the last Monday of every month, two students from MTTI career training school will assist any member with computer questions. These volunteers will try to resolve your computer problems, and help you with a computer course you may be taking. The students will be in the computer lab.

Senior Center Healthy Aging

Nutrition Weight Management continues. Our next session begins in January 2012. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Contact the Health Office at 435-7870 to pre-register for the next session. Sorry, these classes are not drop-in, you must pre-register.

Our new program continues: Therapeutic Touch with Eleanor Leighton RN. Ms. Leighton performed this well researched technique for members of our nutrition-weight management classes and was very well received. This month, on Thursdays, Ms. Leighton will be here to provide members a 15 minute, individual treatment and answer questions-all for only a $2.00 charge. Please contact the Health Office at 435-7870 for your private appointment.

We have Registered Dieticians available for appointments in the health office. They will counsel you, in private, about your dietary needs and insurance usually covers these visits. They are also certified diabetes educators. To schedule a visit, stop by the health office or call us at 435-7870.

We have a Doctor of Audiology here at the center. She is Dr. Jodi Glass, owner of Glass Audiology. She worked for thirty years at Meeting Street School and comes very highly recommended. If you are concerned regarding your hearing, she is a very reputable resource for you. Dr. Glass can be reached at: 575-9951.

Our own Ann Marie Sabula RD and Ellen Frazier lead a weekly meditation group at the senior center each Friday at 11 am. Many studies document the health benefits of meditation and this program is free and open to all members. Beginners welcome!

East Side Clinical Lab draws blood work here once per month.

The date for this month is: Wednesday November 2, 8:30-11:30.

There is no pre-registration, just come in with the lab slip from your doctor. Please utilize this service.

Diabetes Support Group is meeting twice monthly! Thursday, November 3 and 17 from 1:30 to 3 pm (due to Thanksgiving we are meeting the first and third Thursdays). If you have diabetes, please attend this wonderful, supportive group. All with diabetes and their loved ones are welcome!

Atria Bay Spring Village is taking blood pressures. Please say hello to Judy Moorehead RN on Monday, November 7 from 10:30 to 11:30 in the dining room. She will take your blood pressure and answer any questions about their lovely facility.

The East Bay Center clinical social worker, Kathleen Beltramello LICSW, is assisting our seniors with any of their social service needs.

This support group is held the fourth Monday each month. The sessions offer support and sharing with others who are caring for loved ones.

The Stroke Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month and provides entertainment, education, support, socialization, refreshments, and transportation for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

Computer Classes

In-Sight offers programs and support in productive living for the vision impaired. The group meets the 3rd Friday of every month.

Thursday 1:00 p.m. Craft class makes dolls for Hasbro Children’s Hospital and cancer pillows for Women & Infants Hospital. Other “make and take” crafts will be taught.

Sessions & Times Vary Our computer lab consists of class room computers and computers for general use. All computers are on-line. Courses offered: Introduction to Computers, Microsoft Word Part 1 & 2, and Introduction to the Internet Part 1 & 2.

Computer classes are conducted by trained computer teachers. Classes are held in 4 week sessions. Each class meets for 1hr. and 15 minutes. The cost per session is $20/ members and $25/non members. Classes are filled on a first payment basis. Class size is limited to six students.

Forms can be obtained in the Administration Office. The fee is $35 for a one year membership.

Senior Center Library

The library is a very warm and lovely place for people to choose a good book and read in a nice quiet area. We continue to receive many donations of new and current books. These donations have truly enhanced the quantity of our library. We also have current magazines for your enjoyment.

The book club meets on Monday afternoons. New club members are welcome.

General Services

Elder Information Specialist: Our Elder Information Specialist assists the elderly and their families in providing information /referral and assistance with accessing services and programs.

Nutrition Program: The center provides a nutritional meal to approximately 125 seniors per day. The Cranston Senior Center provides the meals.

Case Management / Senior Services: The center coordinates with East Bay Community Action Program Inc., for all casework and follow-ups. Protective Services Council, made up of city departments and mental health/social service agencies, meets monthly to discuss problems concerning the elderly.

Transportation: The center has two buses that are used daily for door-to-door transportation to and from the center.

Notary: This service is available in the Administration Office at no charge.

Seminars: Monthly social, educational, and financial seminars on topics relating to seniors.

Manicurist: A manicurist visits the center weekly for manicures and polish changes.

Gift Shop: The gift shop has many different items for the convenience of the seniors.

Small items from candy and greeting cards to jewelry, handmade items and crafts are available.

Cell Phone Recycling

The center is collecting used or discarded cell phones. Most phones end up in kitchen drawers collecting dust. By partnering with Cellular Recycler, we have developed a way to make the most of used cell phones. A box is in the administration office for depositing the cell phones. We thank you in advance. The phones will either be recycled for their precious metals according to EPA standards or be refurbished for use in developing countries. The memory of each phone is “flashed” to wipe out any previous information stored on the cell phone.

The wedding took place on July 1 at the West Valley Inn in West Warwick, RI with the reception following the ceremony. Ed Josephson was best man and Mike Mailloux was a groomsman. A reception in the Symphony Ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel Downtown Providence followed. Michael Cabral served as Best Man, Laura Gilbert was Maid of Honor, Jennifer King was the Matron of Honor. Bridesmaids were Linda Devine, Meagan Sarkis, and Vera Riker. Junior Bridesmaids were Abigail and Hannah King.

Dining Guide Recipes from Chef Erin...

Give thanks! November is the month to eat, eat, and eat some more! I love it.

Pass that platter over here; whatever it is!

My culinary favorite time of year. I love the combined flavors of fall; the sweet and savory parts of the traditional Thanksgiving meal. For savory: gravy and stuffing, maybe turnip, and seasoned turkey, paired with the sweet: sweet potatoes and/or butternut squash, all lovely, homey flavor pairings.

Flavor combinations are what it’s all about in culinary arts. And I love strong and interesting flavors.

Last week I picked up a bag of cranberries, just because they were there. I had no idea what I would do with them, though I have few tried and true recipes for cranberry walnut or pecan pie. And they can always be used for cranberry sauce, and even frozen. So I thought, why not? They’re seasonal and local, sweet and tart, naughty and nice…like me!

When I sit down to plan a Thanksgiving menu, the one item besides the turkey and gravy that I think absolutely has to appear on the table is cranberry sauce. I think almost any side dish could be negated without too much fuss, but in my family if there were no cranberry sauce, everyone would complain.

So I decided to look for a new recipe to use my cranberries. I didn’t have a pie shell, and I didn’t feel like making pie crust, so it was looking like I would be making a cranberry bundt cake. Until I found the following recipe for Crustless Cranberry Pie. Once again I thought, why not? The recipe looked good, and had many positive reviews. It is a super simple preparation, and it is fabulous.

The “pie” can be baked in a pie shell as the recipe suggests. I baked it in an 8x8” pan and cut it into squares. It’s very pretty too, with the ruby-red cranberry bobbles dotting the top of a crispy glaze.

Inspect your berries, and remove stems and any soft or spotted cranberries. They will stay fresh for about two weeks, and can be frozen exactly as is, in the bag.

Crustless Cranberry Pie Yield: 8 servings

1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups cranberries 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup butter, melted 2 eggs 1 teaspoon almond extract

(We're the 1st exit over the bridge)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease one 9” pie pan.

Combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Stir in the cranberries and the walnuts, and toss to coat. Stir in the melted butter, beaten eggs, and almond extract. The mixture will be very thick. Spread the batter into the prepared pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted near the center comes out clean.

Let cool, but especially delicious served warm.

Butter Sauce:

½ cup butter 1 cup sugar ½ cup heavy cream ½ tsp vanilla

Bring butter, sugar and cream to a boil over medium heat, and stirring. Reduce heat and simmer @ 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Serve.
