POTTSVILLE (PA.) REPUBLICAN HERALD

Run away from ‘Runner Runner’ Whatever his other gifts, Justin Timberlake has a hard time playing “hard.” Ben Affleck has no hint of sinister about him. For director Brad Furman, “The Lincoln Lawyer” is looking more and more like a fluke, and even bringing in someone with gambling movie moxie — the screenwriter from “Rounders” — doesn’t help. So the problems of the Internet gambling thriller “Runner Runner” are many and manifest. A thrill-free thriller with no urgency, scanty wit and limited sex appeal, it plays like just a paycheck for A-list actors who should know better. Timberlake is Richie Furst, a Wall Street dropout whom we meet as he tries to

MOVIE REVIEWS hustle his way to a graduate degree at Princeton. But the online gambling he’s using to finance college fails him, and a little number’s crunching tells him he’s been cheated. Somehow, he scrapes together the cash and the moxie to go to Costa Rica and confront the online gaming kingpin, Ivan Block (Affleck). Block likes that moxie and next thing you know, Richie’s his right hand man, crunching numbers, recruiting “affiliates” to their Internet empire and making eyes at the boss’ babe (Gemma Arterton). He has “everything you ever thought you wanted, when you were 13.” And then a rules-

bending F.B.I. agent (Anthony Mackie, funny) kidnaps him and we wonder whose loyalty Richie will honor — Ivan’s, the feds’ or his own. “Runner Runner” is the sort of movie where the “hero” narrates his tale so thoroughly that there’s little mystery as to what’s coming. It’s a static picture about a sexy world that robs that world of sex and pizazz with student film staging and camera blocking. Let’s hope this was just a quickly forgotten bump in the career path of our stars. And Furman had better hope Matthew McConaughey someday feels indebted for the launch “Lincoln Lawyer” gave him. This “Runner” goes nowhere. Fast.

“Gravity” There’s a scene that comes early in “Gravity,” Alfonso Cuarón’s stunning tale of survival, that will absolutely take your breath away. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a nervous medical engineer making her first spaceshuttle flight, and her far more experienced co-pilot Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), are assaulted by a storm of space debris, the detritus of a destroyed Russian satell i t e, t h at l e ave s t h e m marooned and facing their own mortality. It’s an amaz-

ing sequence that not only shows a cunning use of technology but makes the case that “Gravity” is one of the few films that demands to be seen in 3-D IMAX. Yet “Gravity “also has an emotional and spiritual depth that, like “127 Hours,” another film about man vs. isolation, transcends what might at first seem a gimmicky plot device. Of course, “Gravity” isn’t the first movie to plumb the horror of dying slowly alone. The likes of “Open Water,” “Frozen” and “Buried” have toyed with the idea of characters having only panic and prayers for company to varying effect, but few pack the punch that this film does. tor Cuarón (“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Y Tu Mamá También,” “Children of Men”) and cowritten with his son, Jonas, “Gravity” evokes a sense of spirituality without being too heavy-handed or obvious. Like last year’s “Life of Pi,” another beautifully rendered tale about facing the elements alone, no doubt there will be debates as the credits roll about how the Cuaróns resolve their story. Some will be dissatisfied; others will think it’s pitch-perfect. “Gravity,” a Warner Brothers release, is rated PG-13 for intense perilous sequences, some disturbing images, brief strong language. Go out and get your autumn on

Nathaniel Hawthorne said, “There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings, as now in October” and I tend to agree. I hope October will be sunny for us, ushering in bright skies and a broader horizon. There is much to do and a short time to do it! We have a beautiful and giving community here in our county. Our friends at Schaeffer’s Harley-Davidson, Orwigsburg, offer us many worthy and charitable diversions all year long and autumn is no exception for these fine folks. Make time to attend the Spaghetti Dinner for Cancer Awareness on Saturday and the Black and Blue Ball for MDA on Oct. 19. October is traditionally a beautiful month in Pennsylvania and Schuylkill County is particularly lovely with its mountains, valleys and pastoral scenes. Contrary to popular belief Dear Mark: I mostly play slot machines. It seems on weekends they pay less than if I come midweek. Does the casino have the ability to change the payback percentages on all their machines at will when the casino is busier? I was told by a slot machine employee that the $1 machines I normally play return 95 percent of the money played. Am I wrong to believe that when I show up on a busy weekend that the casino has already made changes to the percentage payback? Marge G. One of the most widely held falsehoods in casino gambling, Marge, is that casinos take a screwdriver to tighten their slots machines on weekends, Christian holidays, the Las Vegas Elvis Fes-

means when it comes to “your” play. A 95 percent payback slot machine will pay 95 percent of the money back over time, but that doesn’t mean that if you put in $100, you are guaranteed a return of $95. It only means that the machine is set to pay back 95 percent over the machine’s extended gambling timeline, which is months, even years; not your brief four-hour stay. Rather than “payback percentage,” which can be misleading, I much prefer the term “theoretical payout percentage” because the payout return is a calculated number based on an “infinite” number of pulls of the handle. In the meantime, each spin of the reels remains a

I think I need to fess up

I have a flaw. Actually, I have many, but my biggest flaw at the moment is something I’m very ashamed of: I smoke. I should clarify I’m talking about cigarettes, not crack or pot or meth or anything — not that they are much worse. I wasn’t always a smoker. When I was about 14 years old, I tried it for the first time because I was sure it would up my cool factor by like 11 points, at least. I mean, what is cooler than coughing uncontrollably until your eyes start to water and you almost can’t breathe? In high school, I pretended I was a smoker, again, to be cool. I’d sneak smoke breaks (sorry, former teachers at Lourdes Regional, I never got caught, and I’m not proud of that), and I’d smoke when I was bumming around town with my friends. Then, when I hit college, I had my first apartment since the school I went to didn’t do the dorm thing. I mean, how could I not smoke in my own apartment? How awesome and “adult” is that? I was convinced I would be a full-time smoker; I pictured myself like Peggy Bundy, fixing dinner with a cigarette hanging from my lips. It

slowly kills you, which should be a huge concern of yours, but if you need to act tough and pretend you don’t care, consider that people who love and care about you will be constantly worried about your health. It smells awful, therefore, so will you. It can cause fires. It creates litter. It will slowly make your teeth, fingernails and house an awful, dingy yellow color. It makes you cough, which is never attractive. And, as a bonus, it is also bad for your skin, so you will wrinkle and age at a much more rapid rate than if you had never picked up the habit. Heed my advice and just take up karate or something instead. (Wasakoski, a News-Item editor, is a graduate of Von Lee School of Aesthetics and is certified as a professional makeup artist)
