n its 18th year, Spirit Day in Minersville continues to expand on its mission to bring the community together. The event held annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on North Street, from the 100 block to Veterans Street. This year’s focus is celebrating Minersville heritage, according to Jennifer Quinn, event chairwoman and president of the Minersville Business and Professional Association, which helps promote and bring new business to the community. “We are proud of our town and the residents should take pride in our community,” Quinn said. Spirit Day, co-sponsored by MBPA, First National Bank and Miners Bank, promotes community pride and honors citizens for exemplary work. The event provides businesses, civic organizations, churches and fire companies with a chance to pro2

A wide range of food will be made by vendors and local churches, Quinn said, adding more food and crafters have been added to this year’s lineup. Other new features include Pony Party Paradise, Shickshinny, for the children. Music and entertainment will be held throughout the day, including local bands The Shoreliners and Jem (Sapphire unplugged) and country line dancers. The Cressona Band and the Minersville Band will play and there will be a performance by Mary Beth’s Gymnastics & Cheerleading Studio, Minersville. A highlight of Spirit Day

‘Riddick’ unexciting thriller “Riddick,” a movie that might have been titled “A Diesel and his Digital Dingo Dog,” is built to mirror the signature traits of its star. Like Vin Diesel, it has bulk, lumbering clumsily along as it repeats Diesel’s greatest hits — the ones that don’t require him to drive a fast and furious car. It’s the third movie in Diesel’s career-making “Pitch Black” (2000) trilogy, roughly — very roughly — picking up where 2004’s “The Chronicles of Riddick” left off. The human convict has been dumped and left for dead on a planet covered with desert and just enough water holes to survive. And it’s all just a tad ... familiar. Riddick narrates his saga, his new life on a place where “the whole damned planet wanted a piece of me.” Yeah, there are beastly birds and eels and scorpion-like monsters that come out when it rains. Familiar. Except for the dogs, deep-space dingoes or hyenas, one of whom he befriends and trains to be his pal. It’s just him and the dog until he stumbles across a “mercenary post,” where he sends out a distress call, luring two competing teams of bounty hunters, which he can then pick off, one by one. Jordi Molla and and Matt Nable are the feuding mercenary bosses who long to collect the price on Riddick’s head — and only his head. But they aren’t hearing Riddick’s narration. He tries to warn them. “It’s always the punch you don’t see coming that puts you down.” Diesel is wholly engaged in the project, unlike the last few “Furious” pictures, where sleepwalking was allowed. He grimaces through Riddick’s
MOVIE REVIEWS self-surgery, scowls as he fights various digital beasts and turns all David Caruso with Riddick’s omnipresent sunglasses. This is a slow, unexciting thriller lacking the edge-ofthe-seat suspense of “Pitch Black.” The story arc — convict redeems himself by killing monsters and saving people — is the same, but there’s no snap to it. Idiotically, Diesel and his collaborator in all things Riddick, writer-director David Twohy, expect us to remember details from the first two films — not blockbusters, from a decade ago — and to care that they conned Karl Urban into a thankless cameo reprising a role he played in “The Chronicles of Riddick.” But as bad movies go, you could do worse than having Diesel growl at a bunch of tough hombres who are already counting the bounty money they’ll collect for his head, sunglasses and all: “Will it be enough to pay for your funerals?” “Riddick,” A Universal release, is rated R for strong violence, language and some sexual content/nudity. Running time: 119 minutes. ★½
“Passion” Brian De Palma attempts to bring his trademark style of psycho-sexual thrills to the arena of corporate politics. The result is a ridiculous but entertaining mess. The movie teeters on the edge of camp for awhile,

then plunges in headlong. Christine (Rachel McAdams), a high-ranking executive at an advertising firm based in Berlin, encourages and mentors her protege Isabel (Noomi Rapace), then happily takes credit for all her ideas. “There’s no backstabbing here,” a smiling Christine tells her furious pupil. “We’re on the same team.” But Isabel is no angel, having already slept with Christine’s boyfriend Dirk (Paul Anderson) before the boardroom betrayal. A series of increasingly elaborate power plays between the women ensue in which everything is fair game. McAdams’ lipsmacking performance as the conniving Christine is one of the movie’s chief pleasures. Energized by the opportunity to play something other than a romantic love interest, the actress radiates a predatory cunning; you can’t tell when the charReading Movies 11 & IMAX FRI-WED 9/6-11

heartbreaking choice by a filmmaker who was a master of the device. De Palma’s fumbled attempts to explore his longstanding theme of voyeurism via modern technology — cellphones, web cams, Skype — are more than a little sad. His decision to

throw in some sexual kinks feels gratuitous and desperate, and the story’s sapphic undertones eventually take over the movie with unintentionally comic consequences. De Palma used to be accused of ripping off Hitchcock. Now he’s ripping off his own movies. What “Passion” ultimately lacks most, ironically, is passion, the artistic fervor that distinguished all his best pictures. This one feels like a throwaway by a gifted filmmaker who has run out of ideas. “Passion,” an eOne Entertainment release, is rated R for vulgar language, sexual situations, brief violence, gore. September ‘great’ in county September marks the end of another wonderful summer in Schuylkill County and ushers in the harvest season. Early-fall weather is usually perfect — warm but crisp, allowing outdoor pursuits while warning us time is limited before the approach of winter. We feel the gentle nip in the air knowing we have plenty to enjoy from Friday night coal region high school football games to leaf peeping and apple picking. Throughout the entire month you will notice a common theme: great communities and great organizations hosting great events. September offers us proof that we are truly blessed with a very giving community. Minersville Spirit Day is Sunday and Schuylkill Haven Borough Day is on
