TODAY’S WOMAN/ APRIL 2014

Her Grandmother’s Legacy

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s thirst for justice comes from family roots by Stephanie Longo

The Kane family celebrates after Kathleen Granahan Kane won the Democratic nomination for Pennsylvania Attorney General in 2012. From left: Chris Kane, Christopher Kane, Zach Kane and Kathleen Granahan Kane.

TIMES-SHAMROCK SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

Scranton native Kathleen Granahan Kane is outspoken, warm and driven by a zeal for justice with a mixture of kindness and steel she learned at the knee of a “tough little old lady” — her grandmother, Mary Walsh. “She is the epitome of yesterday’s woman, today’s woman and tomorrow’s woman,” Kane said. Walsh’s life story has influenced Kane throughout her career straight through to her current office as Pennsylvania’s Attorney General. Two years after World War II ended, Walsh found herself widowed with six children and cut out of her husband’s family’s business. Knowing that she had a family to support, Walsh found work as an English teacher at Dunmore High School, which she continued until her retirement in 1976. While teaching, Walsh helped raise 23 grandchildren, including Kane. “She was a tough little old lady,” she said. “She raised six kids without crying or ever asking ‘why me?’ She moved into a second-floor apartment where she raised them. She never remarried or dated. She kept moving forward and moving on. I loved her. The day she died was probably the saddest day in my entire life.” Kane has made her mark on the Pennsylvania political scene by being the first woman and first Democrat ever elected to the office of Attorney General. She is also only the third person in the Commonwealth’s history, along with former President Lyndon B. Johnson and U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr., to have received more than three million votes in an election. “Every now and then, when you are up at 3 or 5 in the morning, it hits you — wow, I am the Attorney General of Pennsylvania,” Kane said. “It’s cool and I’m flattered by it, but I’m more honored by it than anything because people trust me to do this job. They didn’t care whether I was a woman or a man and I think that’s a good sign.” The daughter of Joe Granahan and Ellen Granahan Gordon, Kane grew up in a family of lawyers and a household of rules

and justice. A 1984 graduate of West Scranton High School and an alumna of the University of Scranton and Temple University School of Law, the ever-changing aspect of the legal field attracted her the most. Before her election, she worked on civil litigation cases at Post & Schell, P.C. in Philadelphia and as an assistant district attorney for Lackawanna County, where she specialized in childhood sexual abuse cases. “I loved being in the courtroom,” she said. “You say to yourself, ‘this is a child.’ I think it is so appalling that anyone could hurt a child. People used to say to me, ‘I don’t know how you could prosecute those types of cases.’ My answer always was, ‘how do you not?’ I don’t know how you can’t run into that courtroom.” Despite her accomplishments, when Kane announced her candidacy for state attorney general in 2012, she was met with skepticism not just concerning her gender, but also because of her northeast Pennsylvania roots. “When I was running, I got it all the time that I wasn’t from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh,” she said. “They used to call me ‘the girl from Scranton.’ I decided I was

going to show them what a girl from Scranton really is. I am proud to be from here. It shows that I’m tough, it shows I’m loyal and a hard worker. You’re darn right I’m from Scranton.” “During the campaign, they were brutal on me,” Kane continued. “There were commercials that were filled with lies but I didn’t stay in my house and think, ‘Oh my God, people think terrible things about me.’ I went out and campaigned even more and went to more events and worked extra hours in the day. I resolved that I wasn’t just going to win the election, I was going to have a resounding win in the election, and I did.” Besides her role as the state’s chief law enforcement officer, Kane makes it a point to visit schools, senior centers or anyplace she can to inform Pennsylvanians that she wants to work for them. Recently, she was visited at her Harrisburg office by a group of interns, one of whom asked her what it was like to be a woman in her position. “I told her that my biggest surprise is that we’re still battling discrimination in 2014. We shouldn’t be,” Kane said. “I asked her what she had learned from her visit and she said that she has to stand up

for herself. I told her she was right. You have to stand up for yourself. You can’t expect anyone to do it for you because it’s never going to happen. Adversity is always going to be there, but don’t cower from it, don’t back down from it. Step up into it. Give them a good punch.” Kane divides her time between Harrisburg and her home in Clarks Summit where she lives with her husband, Chris, and two sons, Christopher and Zach. Mary Walsh died in 1986, but the lessons Kane learned from her grandmother are now being imparted to a new generation, including her children and the students she speaks to. “Her story shows women that they can do it,” Kane said. “They can raise their family and work and they can be happy. My grandmother was not a complainer, she was tough. She really taught us to be strong and to constantly move forward and move on. That is a lesson that never grows old.” “Don’t ever be afraid and don’t ever back down from anyone or anything,” she added. “You have to, what are you going to do, cry? There’s no crying. You can do whatever you want to do. Don’t let them get to you. Carry on.”

TODAY’S WOMAN/ APRIL 2014

Late Life Discovery Leads To a New Path Pittston woman takes leap of faith and lands on her feet

by Stephanie Longo

TIMES-SHAMROCK SPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

Four years ago, Dr. Ann Marie Stelma Graff was stuck in a rut. Having spent 25 years working at Lackawanna College, the Pittston native realized her job was no longer exciting to her and that it was time to make a change. That change led her straight to the presidency of New Jersey’s Eastern International College, which she will assume this summer. “It’s never easy leaving your comfort zone,” Graff said. “But I believe it was the best thing I ever did. It allowed me to find out just how resourceful I was. I found out what I probably already knew but didn’t have any reason to test before — that I am a strong, creative woman and I could land on my feet.” Graff has worked as an educator for most of her career, having taught elementary school, college and adult education courses. After leaving Lackawanna College, Graff has worked as an education consultant both privately and for AngelStar Holdings, where she is also vice president for training. Her work with AngelStar led her to Eastern International College, where she has served on the board of directors since 2005. “For some reason, my life takes a turn every 10 years or so, and this was no different,” she said. “I didn’t have your traditional 9-to5 job. I was doing something different every day and with my new job, I will be traveling and working from home more than half of my week. I get the best of both worlds, a new job with new challenges and opportunities to take Eastern International College into its next phase while being home with my family.” It is Graff’s family that has sustained her throughout her life. Graff married for the first time at age 49 and has two stepchildren, Ashley and David, from her husband Dave’s first marriage “I definitely think waiting has its benefits,” she said. “I dated my share of men before my husband and was even engaged before but they were either too immature or had issues with commitment. I also think when I was younger that I was more willing to give up what I wanted to keep a man.

My husband is truly my soulmate. We like the same things and genuinely enjoy each other’s company.” “By the time I was in my forties, I knew what was important to me and what mattered,” she continued. “It wasn’t about looks or wealth or education. Though my husband is a very attractive man, it was his personality that attracted me. He made me laugh. It all came down to the fact that we made each other happy just by being together.” Graff said that the most important thing she learned about her life is that anything is possible and that a person should never say never. She also urged the young women of today to take chances and believe in themselves because, in the end, they don’t know what could happen. “If someone had asked me ten years ago if I had the chance to stay home and not work full time if I would do it, I would have said ‘no way,’” she said. “Now, I can’t imagine working in an office for 40 hours a week and not being home to bake or cook for my family. Don’t get me wrong, I love working. It is exciting for me to take on new challenges Fishing is Dr. Ann Marie Stelma Graff’s favorite hobby. Today’s woman is the woman who gets up every morning and does whatever she has to in order to put food on the table, pay her bills or make a relationship work.” “Today’s woman isn’t a specific type,” Graff continued. “I have an aunt who retired a few years ago and who ran for school board this year. She isn’t your traditional wife and mother, but she is today’s woman. She saw what she wanted and went after it. I have a friend who lost everything she owned in a fire and she manages to get up Family comes first for Dr. Ann Marie Stelma Graff. “If you have a strong sense of every day and go to work and take care of family, you can get through anything,” she said.
