is a PR agency that comprises the students of RP's Diploma in Mass Communication (DMC). They were assigned to work on the campaign for HomeTeamNS Sembawang

As part of the Media Practicum module, DMC students landed an exciting assignment: to conceptualise, pitch and execute a digital publicity campaign for HomeTeamNS' clubhouses at Tampines, Sembawang and Bukit Batok!

9:45am / GETTING THE BRIEF

"We need to present in a comprehensive way so that the client will understand how we achieved our targets."

Lecturer Mr Firdaus Ghani breaks down the key elements that DMC rePResent has to include about their digital media publicity campaign evaluation in their client presentation. 10:40am / COLLECTING INFORMATION

HOMETEAMNS SEMBAWANG Using vlog-style videos, DMC rePResent effectively highlighted the versatile facilities at HomeTeamNS Sembawang. Need an ideal space to host chalets, birthday parties and other events? No problem. HOMETEAMNS BUKIT BATOK To promote the fun activities at HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok, DMC students conceptualised and filmed different skits which were posted as a video series on Facebook.

HOMETEAMNS TAMPINES Showcasing the vibrant atmosphere at HomeTeamNS Tampines, DMC students created hashtags like #LaiAh! (Come!), #HomeTeamSediah and even their own interesting characters in the #LaiAhSquad!

Being in the Lead Team, Kevin is heavily involved in the planning and management of the campaign. Right now, he is tasked to collect important information from the social media and digital content creation teams to include in the presentation. 11:00am / GOING INTO DISCUSSION

In deep discussion with Kevin and Daphne about the social media insights from their campaign, Ummairah and Abel share their findings while Mr Firdaus guides them along with his valuable input.

Get inspired by our RP alumni who have managed to forge their own path, armed with a keen eye for opportunity and a resilient spirit!

Damian Sia Diploma in Information Technology School of Information and Communications Technology* 2008 Graduate Founder of Motorist.sg *Now known as School of Infocomm

FOUNDER OF MOTORIST.SG, DAMIAN SIA, IS A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR WHOSE BUSINESS HAS CROSSED $1 MILLION IN REVENUE SINCE 2016. MENTORED AND SUPPORTED BY RP ENTREPRENEURSHIP SERVICE CENTRE, DAMIEN HOPES TO BRING ULTIMATE CONVENIENCE TO MOTORISTS IN SINGAPORE.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR? There are multiple reasons why I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Both my parents were entrepreneurs and that inspired me to follow in their footsteps. As compared to a fixed work schedule, I prefer to work at more flexible hours as I believe the fluidity expands one’s capabilities.

HOW DID YOU SET UP MOTORIST.SG? I first founded Quotations.com.sg back in 2011. It started as a platform for people to obtain quotations for any service or product. However, only enquiries pertaining to cars were consistent and had garnered several successful transactions. This led to my decision to focus on cars as a niche market and resulted in the start-up of Motorist.sg, a car bidding platform that lets Singaporeans sell their cars within 24 hours.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS? Read and watch videos for self-improvement. Spend time with people who have achieved what you want. I set small tasks to be completed daily and I assume full responsibility and accountability for them. This way, I know that I am moving towards my goals.

Successfully blending tradition and innovation to market the world’s first gourmet Fish Bak Kwa, which was created by his father, the enterprising Derek Ong carries on Ocean King Holdings’ legacy as a trusted supplier and distributor of seafood products. WHAT STRUCK YOU TO MARKET YOUR SIGNATURE FISH BAK KWA? My dad left an indelible mark on my entrepreneurial spirit – I grew up around his establishments and was inspired to implement change if it was necessary. I was fond of the unique recipe and thought what it needed was to be marketed to the right audiences.

DISCOVER 14

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Watching my father's businesses as I grew up left a huge impression on me. Since we spend a lot of time at work, I wanted to be able to do something that I enjoy. I chose this path as I'm passionate about this industry. WHICH ENTREPRENEUR IS YOUR ROLE MODEL? Elon Musk. He is who I’d call a frontier.

WHAT SHOULD ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS INVEST THEIR TIME IN? I think learning, networking and time away from business is as important as spending time on the business. Also, a strong support system (family, friends and faith) is important to help you handle the stress.

Feeling curious about the realm of design, Nasrul Haziq hit the streets to interview designers from diverse backgrounds back in 2010. His venture evolved into a viral online documentary titled Design Says Hello. Now, Nasrul hopes to reach out and influence communities through design to drive social change.

Nasrul Haziq Diploma in Design for Interactivity* School of Technology for the Arts 2010 Graduate Founder of Design Says Hello

*Now known as Diploma in Design for User Experience

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPRIRT? It began in 2008/09. I was on a school service learning trip organised by RP, to help out at Sangkheum Center for Children in Cambodia. For the first time, I saw how design could actually make a difference in people's lives. We painted their classrooms and playgrounds, helped them to build fences and conducted workshops for the kids. It was such an unforgettable experience that when I returned to Singapore, I truly questioned

my role as a designer and my place in the world. I saw how design had the potential to not just help communities in third world countries, but businesses as well. WHEN DID YOU GET THE EUREKA MOMENT TO DEVELOP YOUR START-UP? It was not really a Eureka moment but a journey of genuinely wanting to figure out my place in this world and how I can help others along the way.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL TIPS FOR BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS? Developing soft skills – key traits such as empathy, compassion, mindfulness, and learning to listen. I also recommend investing in helping people instead of just focusing on making profit. An entrepreneur I’m inspired by is my late grandfather who was in the catering industry. He had a heart for people and always gave food to the less privileged.

Mr Kevin Teoh Lecturer School of Technology for the Arts Diploma in Sonic Arts

Mr Kevin is in charge of the Foley Arts Studio, an aural playground that facilitates industry-quality sound design.

Mr Kevin Teoh is a media veteran who has worked as a sound designer, composer and audio engineer. The experienced lecturer enjoys and hopes to impart his knowledge to his students, who are like-minded music enthusiasts. ENJOYABLE MOMENTS IN THE CLASSROOM "When the class is genuinely serious and enthused about the problem statement given to them, they take their work seriously enough to ask real questions. It’s moments like these when I find teaching most enjoyable." A VETERAN'S ADVICE ON THE INDUSTRY "I’m driven to constantly hone and improve my craft, be it in sound design,

TRANSFORM 16

mixing or composing. My motivation is to always try to achieve satisfaction on two major fronts: the client and self. The clients’ expectations and your own preferences may not always be in sync, but it will be good if both can meet somewhere in the middle. It’s important for students who want to join the industry to maintain a positive attitude. The general mantra would be: Don’t whine and complain, be punctual and don’t argue. When you’re starting

out, you need to know that the world really doesn’t revolve around you, and being humble goes a long way. It is not an easy industry to be in but as long as you are committed to your craft and genuinely love what you do, you’ll go places." ENGAGING TEACHING METHODS "Rather than getting students to follow certain technical practices blindly, I use my various experiences to explain to them more cohesively why things are done in a certain way. This is because some industry practices stem from very old practices of the analogue days, as compared to our current convenient digital age."

A journalist-turned-lecturer, Ms Shahida Ariff’s career highlights include the collaboration between RP and the Singapore Red Cross Society, which commissioned students and lecturers for a commemorative project on the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Their work culminated in a photo exhibition, documentary series and photobook, which later won Best Custom Publication at the Prism Awards 2016 THE JOYS OF TEACHING “If my students enjoy what they’re learning, it makes me happy. Some students also discover strengths and talents while they are here, and to see them blossom is a truly wonderful feeling. I’ve had a few students who were suffering from low self-esteem when they first came to RP, from years of being told by their previous teachers that they weren’t good students. To see these students discover and excel in a skill, whether it’s writing, photography or videography, really makes this job worthwhile. My students are my biggest motivation. Ms Shahida Ariff Lecturer School of Management and Communication Diploma in Mass Communication

I’m also surrounded by great colleagues who provide support and laughter, which are so important. On a typical day, every lesson that I deliver in class is memorable I can never predict how students will be responding to the discussions and activities in class.”

Throughout her decade-long tenure at RP, Dr Susmita’s career achievements extend beyond her numerous patent inventions and the industry accolades she has received. Under her guidance, students have gone on to receive prestigious awards on international levels, giving them a competitive edge over industry peers. DRIVING STUDENTS’ CURIOSITY “It always gives me great satisfaction when I find students going further, researching in depth to satisfy their curiosity, challenging one another’s solutions with stimulating questions and arguments on a typical day of covering a complex science topic. I feel I have achieved when I actuate their desire to learn. I encourage learning through creating a relaxed environment for my students. On explaining more complex concepts, I will stimulate my students' interests through discussions to better facilitate their understanding in these topics. Dr Susmita Ban Senior Lecturer School of Applied Science Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences

As a principal investigator of several scientific research projects, I am glad to have generated opportunities for students to actively engage in original research that would impact the society. I have also helped students carve out a niche for critical and inventive thinking, which resulted in their research being published in peer-reviewed international journals and winning awards from national and international platforms.”

Ms Teeny's love for teaching was spurred by the passionate, driven and resourceful students whom she worked with during her time at Wildlife Reserves Singapore. Now as an RP Lecturer, she inspires her students with creative and fun teaching methods (like showing up to class as a K-Pop dancing bunny). There has never been a dull moment with the ever-spontaneous Ms Teeny around!

Ms Teeny Teh Lecturer School of Hospitality Diploma in Integrated Events Management

Known for making her lessons a fun learning experience, Ms Teeny's students share a special bond with her.

HELPING STUDENTS TO GO FURTHER "As with most industries, and especially in the events industry, we are on the constant lookout for creative and critical thinkers. I think that the education industry is evolving and looking at more innovative ways to nurture these traits in our learners. The learning environment is no longer teacher-centric, but rather a dynamic and interactive melting pot of ideas where students are empowered to take charge of their own learning and are encouraged to be more curious, analytical and independent. I used my experience and contacts to secure an event attachment for 20 students from School of Hospitality (SOH) and School of Applied Science

TRANSFORM 18

(SAS) for Zoolympix, Singapore Zoo’s signature event during the June school holidays in 2016. They experienced the full process of event management – from event conceptualisation to actual onsite execution and troubleshooting. I was very happy and proud when the Singapore Zoo implemented all their ideas. The students also experienced conceptualising, filming, editing, and launching the event marketing video, which saw nearly 10,000 views in just two weeks! I also coached and mentored four students from the Diploma in Integrated Events Management (DIEM) for the Singapore MICE Challenge 2017, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. Our RP team

emerged as the first runner-up and they will be going on a fully sponsored trip by SACEOS to attend the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) Convening Leaders 2018 at Nashville, Tennessee, USA. There, they will be interacting and presenting their proposal to more than 4,000 international industry-thought leaders." A HEARTWARMING GIFT OF THANKS "At the end of the semester, my sweet students surprised me with flowers, a huge thank you card with heartfelt messages and an unforgettable dance performance that they secretly practised for many weeks. I was so touched that I couldn’t hold back my tears."

EXCELLING ACADEMICALLY AND PHYSICALLY "RP is the only polytechnic offering the course I wanted – Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences. My interest in the course stemmed from my curiosity about human physiology and athletic performance during exercises (specifically the mass gained from strength training and the aerobic responses after marathons), and my love for sprinting." GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY "I am thankful for the scholarship as it eased a huge financial burden. I’m also grateful because it was a form of recognition by the school, acknowledging my hard work and efforts on my academic and non-academic journeys. I would like to return the favour and be beneficial to society. As such, I hope to teach PE or Sports Science in the future. I want to motivate youths and help them understand that through hard work, anything is achievable. I am thankful to RP for the opportunity to go to New Zealand for my Internship Immersion Programme (IIP). Despite the short period of 20 weeks, this overseas IIP provided me with useful insights of living and working abroad. CHOOSING THE OVERSEAS EXPERIENCE "We were informed about the overseas internships available during our pre-internship briefing. I was immediately attracted to the role of a sensory and food technologist for Goodman Fielder Limited, which is based in New Zealand." THE PROCESS "During my internship I was involved in the redevelopment of a near century-old brand, where I redeveloped old confectionary recipes, conducted baking trails and sensory evaluations for each updated product. I also flew to Sydney for a one-week course on new sensory evaluation software, and was tasked to help the Australian branch of the company to prepare sensory questionnaire templates, and to guide their team on the updated software." FORGING NEW CONNECTIONS "I enjoyed bonding with my colleagues. We even went on a road trip to the mountains where I experienced snow for the first time, and went fishing in the open sea. I also got to learn about New Zealand culture, especially the rich history of the Maori. When passengers thanked me for my service, I felt that I had somehow left an impact or a pleasant memory in their lives.” PUTTING RP’S TRAINING TO GOOD USE "The presentation skills we learned at RP gave me the confidence to be in charge of the in-flight safety demonstration. Working in teams also taught me how to interact with passengers from diverse backgrounds and handle their various needs."

Khairil Adri Bin Kamsani Diploma in Health Management and Promotion School of Sports, Health and Leisure Year 3

It was a huge responsibility to do my best for the community as an intern. I had to act professionally and had to uphold the name of both RP and the National Healthcare Group. The first-hand experience of working with patients was a defining moment for me. FINDING THE RIGHT FIT "I’ve always been keen to work in the healthcare sector. Through the recommendation from my mentor, Ms Low Pei Pei, I secured my internship with the National Healthcare Group (NHG). I enjoyed the conducive working environment at NHG – I was stationed in various Community Centres, which worked well for me. I provided health coaching to the elderly who came for health screening during NHG’s Community Health Posts programme. I also had the opportunity to participate in new community-centric projects like mass influenza vaccination exercises and to help out with health screenings."

While working on a team project at a FinTech company, Moolah Sense, my role as a programmer required me to automate processes based on their criteria. There were minor obstacles as everyone had varying opinions on the best way to proceed, but just like how we work in teams at RP, we resolved our differences and came up with effective solutions. A SENSE OF SATISFACTION “Before my internship, I researched about Moolah Sense to gain a greater understanding of what they do. I also ensured that I was always punctual and appropriately dressed during my time there. I enjoyed the non-hierarchical system that my supervisor adopted. The open-space concept in the office encouraged everyone to collaborate and nurture one another. My abilities were recognised by my supervisor and colleagues, leading them to entrust me with more responsibilities. It felt rewarding to be able to share my programming skills with my peers.”

At the Walt Disney Company, I worked on a team project where I had to deliver key insights on TV ratings and audience reach for their key TV programmes in South-east Asia. ZEROING IN ON DATA “As I was assigned to do market research, I prepared ahead for the job by familiarising myself with basic software like Microsoft Excel and read up on various television ratings software.

Sean Sin Diploma in Consumer Behaviour and Research School of Management and Communication Year 3

I remembered having to give a presentation about the top 1,000 games ranked in the South-east Asia region. It was a nerve-racking experience since it was my first time conducting a presentation to the managers and directors of my team. However, I managed to provide the key insights, using a software called Power BI to create the accompanying visuals, and everyone was pleased with my presentation.” FUN-FILLED WORKING ENVIRONMENT “I enjoyed the company culture as well as working with my colleagues. My colleagues were very approachable and were ready to share more about their line of work.”

My most memorable video shoot was the Unrestricted Access video series, which was produced for Careers@Gov's Facebook page. It featured forensic technical officer, Mr Tan Yong Ming, and it was held in a mortuary at Health Sciences Authority. This was the first video I was tasked to take charge of, from pre- to post-production. Naturally, I was even more excited and attached to this project. TAKING ON A NEW RESPONSIBILITY “I was excited to get on the internship arranged by RP, which was with the Prime Minister's Office. My job entailed me to create video content for the Public Service Division, which was shared on their social media platforms like the Careers@Gov Facebook page.” RISING TO THE CHALLENGE “The PS21 ExCEL Convention was daunting for me as I was the only one with adequate camera equipment suitable for capturing good shots throughout the award ceremony and speeches. I was concerned that I might take unfocused photos which were poorly represented. However, my desire to capture good quality photos bolstered my courage to get the job done well. Additionally, I was tasked to take photos of Mr Peter Ong, the Head of Civil Service, as he visited the booths which were displayed by organisations such as the Singapore Civil Defence Force and Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore. This meant that I had to stand directly in front of him or follow him closely in order to obtain good shots. Seeing other professional photographers at the scene really challenged me to capture better photos – my first experience at photographing a VIP was definitely an interesting one.”

I was initially nervous about my decision of choosing an internship in Vietnam as it was my first time leaving home. However, after doing research on Vietnamese culture, customs and lifestyle. I felt more at ease and started looking forward to it. THE INTERVIEW PROCESS “I had initially applied for an internship at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. During the interview, I expressed my passion for interacting with guests. Thus, my interviewer referred me to Mr Phuong, Director of Guest Services, who gave me the opportunity to work at the resort.” SHARING THE JOY “I enjoyed interacting and bonding with guests. This has taught me how to deal with different types of guests and has also encouraged me to go the extra mile to achieve customer satisfaction. Whenever we received compliments about the resort, be it about the architecture, beautiful views or the services rendered, I felt a great sense of satisfaction. I was privileged to have been given this internship opportunity." APPLYING THE SKILLS LEARNED AT RP RP has equipped me with relevant skills to work in a real-world situation. When I had to present our recommendations on ways to improve the resort, I could do so confidently as I could relate back to the presentations we had to do in RP. Just to share a tip on presentations – if you are nervous, just take a deep breath and constantly remind yourself to be confident. Experience RP

BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE! If you are a Normal Academic student who has done well for the GCE N-Level and keen to join RP, then the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) might be the route for you! Find out more about PFP in RP from our pioneer PFP graduates.

Nigel Leno physical c Gasper overcame enrol in t hallenges to succes his he sfu via PFP. He course of his drea lly ms h a s eve REPUBLIC A ward and n won the scholarsh from the ip Logicom InLee Foundation and s strument s Pte Ltd! HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT RP’S POLYTECHNIC FOUNDATION PROGRAMME (PFP)? I was excited about this programme when my teachers recommended it to me during my secondary school days.

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT WHEN YOU DECIDED TO ENROL IN RP’S PFP? I was looking for a head start to gain direct entry into my preferred school. As some of the PFP modules were taught using Problem-based Learning, this gave me additional time to adjust to RP’s culture of doing daily presentations. My PFP experience definitely helped me through my subsequent three years in RP.

TRANSFORM 26

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE PART OF YOUR PFP YEAR? Some of the most memorable moments in PFP were the out-of-classroom activities. I participated in the cultural amazing race where we had to travel around Chinatown to complete puzzles linked to various ethnic and religious groups, and my team came in second!

Former PFP pion Neo Fang Ching was eer, into the Director’s inducted Honour for three se Roll of and currently works mesters Kids Network Netbal for The l Ac as a part-time coacademy h.

Neo Fang Ching Diploma in Sports Coaching School of Sports, Health and Leisure 2017 Graduate

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO ENROL IN THE PFP? I was attracted to PFP as I wanted a different environment for my studies and was eager to try this programme as I would be in the pioneer batch.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST PART OF PFP? During my time in PFP, there was an interesting module called ‘Design Thinking’ where we had to create various prototypes and conduct experiments. It was challenging as we had to step out of our comfort zones. There were many instances where our ideas failed and we had to start from scratch. I learned how to recover from failure and could relate everything to real life. Having to do presentations every day also boosted my confidence even though it was a challenge for me initially. Being in the PFP has allowed me to have an upper hand in terms of adapting to the industry's environment and culture.

WHAT DID YOU LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN YOU ENROLLED IN RP’S PFP? No more uniforms, a new learning environment in air-conditioned classrooms, and the opportunity to learn new subjects!

Tan Wen Ting made her decision to set her foundation in Business Information Systems by snapping up a spot in RP’s PFP.

WHAT DROVE YOU TO ENROL IN THE PFP? I got to know about PFP through my secondary school, where a session was conducted to introduce the programme to all Secondary 4 Normal Academic students. I met all the requirements for the programme and decided to enrol as it was a good platform to set an early foundation.

WHAT WERE YOU ANTICIPATING UPON ENROLLING IN RP’S PFP? I looked forward to starting school as a polytechnic student and going through the syllabus specially prepared to cater to the pioneer batch of PFP.

HOW DID YOU BENEFIT FROM THE PFP? PFP gave me a head start to learn about the Problembased Learning pedagogy. The concept of working in teams, class participation and daily presentations helped me throughout my years in RP. Also, there were many off-site activities planned for us to complete our group projects which were very fun and engaging.

Tan Wen Ting Diploma in Business Information Systems School of Infocomm 2017 Graduate

‘How PFP Works Instead of moving on to Secondary 5, the PFP enables you to embark on a one-year practice-oriented foundation curriculum conducted by RP lecturers. You’ll take up modules related to your chosen diploma and at the end of the programme, you will be assessed to confirm your progression to the diploma course.

Route to

Confused by the different types of Admissions Exercises? Here’s a handy guide to help you get into RP.

POLYTECHNIC FOUNDATION PROGRAMME ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (PFPAE) JOINT ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (JAE) The JAE is open to all Singapore citizens and permanent residents with valid GCE O-Level results from any year. International students studying in a Government School, Government-Aided School, or an Independent School in Singapore with valid 2017 Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level Examination results are also eligible to apply.

If you’re a Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) student, you may be invited to participate in the PFPAE if you meet the eligibility criteria. This lets you skip Secondary 5 to gain direct entry into RP. You will get into your chosen diploma programme if you pass all modules in the one-year PFP.

DIRECT ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (DAE) The DAE is for students who want to apply directly to RP. It’s open to the current cohort of full-time ITE students, those with GCE O-Level qualifications but were unable to apply through JAE and students seeking re-admisson to the polytechnic. Also open to holders of Integrated Programme (IP), International Baccalaureate (IB), GCE A-Level, and international qualifications.

JOINT POLYTECHNIC ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (JPAE)

EARLY ADMISSIONS EXERCISE (EAE) Students taking the GCE O-Level Examination in 2018 can submit an EAE application in June or July 2018 to be considered for admission based on their aptitudes and interests. ITE students in their final year of their Nitec or Higher Nitec courses, including students who will be completing their courses in June and September 2018, are eligible to apply for a place through EAE (I). EAE is also open to Direct-Entry-Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP) students (who have met the required qualifying GPA) applying for entry to the first or second year of a diploma course.
