Entrepreneur Razinah Rafik Ahmad and actor-musician Tosh Zhang spill the beans on their time in RP, and life after graduation! Setting out to build a henna empire (and amassing over 65 thousand social media followers while at it) wasn’t part of Razinah’s plan. “It was a natural progression that started from a simple henna engagement,” shared the RP Diploma in Consumer Behaviour & Research (DCBR) alumna. At 17, Razinah was about to embark on her next stage of education, but had little clue what to pursue. After one client led to another, the henna maven recognised the potential to turn her passion into a full-fledged business. In a fortuitous turn of events, Razinah's decision to enroll in DCBR provided the last piece to the puzzle. Today, Razinah is not only a highly sought-after bridal henna artist, but also a successful entrepreneur who is taking the industry by storm.
Razinah Rafik Ahmad Diploma in Consumer Behaviour & Research School of Management and Communication 2018 Graduate
So what have you been up to since graduation? I’ve been focusing on my henna business. Apart from working on bridal appointments, I’ve participated in fund-raising and corporate events. I’ve also recently launched my own series of henna products, which are entirely self-manufactured. Why did you choose to join DCBR? I knew that DCBR would equip me with applicable skills for not only my henna venture, but also a wide range of career options. Whether it’s lending insight into consumer behaviour, brand management, media communications or social media marketing, each module has taught me relevant knowledge that I’ve been able to integrate into my own business. Were your lecturers aware of your henna venture? Yes! They were extremely supportive. Apart from dishing out solid business advice and powerful words of encouragement, my lecturers even showed up to my booth at RP’s Entrepreneur Week to get henna tattoos done! Share with us a highlight from your time in DCBR! My internship with the Prime Minister’s Office was an eye-opening experience. I had first-hand insight of how a huge organisation handles dayto-day operations and marketing campaigns, and learned many tips that will be useful when I want to expand my business. The most memorable moment was when I was given the opportunity to collaborate with them on a video after they recognised my work on social media. It felt like all of my hard work was paying off. Share some advice with aspiring entrepreneurs! Find something that you really enjoy. Being truly passionate about what you’re doing will help drive you to make it work, and to overcome the obstacles that come your way.

Tosh Zhang Zhiyang Diploma in New Media (Now known as Diploma in Media Production & Design) School of Technology for the Arts 2009 Graduate
Actor, musician, YouTuber, host and all-round hustler – Tosh Zhang might have social media to thank for his rise to stardom, but his transition from average Joe to household name may have been written in the stars all along. Describing his days in RP as one of the best times of his life, Tosh was quite the entertainer, having once made it to the finals of Hey Gorgeous, a local talent-scouting competition. “They spotted me after I started B-boying in the canteen. I went onstage and performed an entire rap about how people liked to judge me based on what I wore," he laughingly recalls, "I was a pretty loud dresser. I remember being in red from head to toe that day, and I even had cornrows...” The outspoken alumni, who became a videographer after graduation, eventually got his big break through the Ah Boys to Men movie franchise – an opportunity that came after he started YouTube. Tosh shares, “At RP, I was encouraged to explore different things and to express myself. So I formed many opinions that I eventually decided to put online!" And with nine film features,14 music singles, and a legion of fans, it’s safe to say the multi-hyphenate is at the top of his game.

What have you been up to recently? I've been working on passion projects – pushing out music and creating original content. I’ve recently dropped my single, '呆在家', and I'll be releasing my first EP next year. How was your RP experience like? I looked forward to school! It was very fun because there was something different to learn every day, be it producing short films or graphic designs. I even got an ‘A’ on my Final Year Project (FYP) – we did a documentary on the b-boy community and local hip hop culture. Being able to combine my interests was really memorable, and my lecturer even used our project as an example for our juniors! Speaking of dancing, you were also a member of Style Groovaz Crew! Yes! It was epic when I first met the crew. I checked out their booth at CCA Fiesta, and what started as a performance turned into a dance battle after one guy "challenged" me during his set. It was unforgettable because it was just us – real street dancers who weren’t surrounded by judges or sponsors – battling it out. We gained mutual respect for each other, and I ended up joining the CCA. '呆在家' is now available on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube!
Why should potential students join RP? RP allows you to explore your horizons and achieve your goals in a unique learning environment. Apart from that, the RP culture is super vibrant and will get you excited about going to school, which I believe will help you perform better.

PFP Diaries
The Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) allows eligible GCE N-Level students to snag a spot at RP without going through secondary 5. Ahead, four PFP participants reflect on their journey thus far .
Aqil Luqman Zamberi Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning School of Sports, Health and Leisure Year 3
A budding outdoorsman who ventured off the well-worn GCE O-Level trek, Aqil Luqman was only 15 when he resolved to apply for RP’s Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning via PFP. Finding his true element in the unconventional setting of outdoor education and RP’s unique learning system, Aqil thrived and even became a PFP scholarship recipient! Why did you choose to join Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning (DOAL)? I was fortunate to have had educators who influenced and inspired me with their willingness to go above and beyond for their students. Joining DOAL allows me to combine my dream of becoming a teacher and passion for outdoor adventure – my goal is to become an Outdoor Educator focusing on adventure therapy to help at-risk youths forge a positive path. How have you benefited from PFP? An unexpected advantage was being able to develop my confidence in a safe learning environment. Confidence plays a huge part for outdoor instructors, we not only

need to trust our ability to deliver the knowledge and skills, but also to ensure the safety of our participants. Furthermore, compared to students who enrolled via JAE, my training during PFP gave me more time to adapt to RP’s Problem-based Learning pedagogy. This resulted in better presentation, teamwork, and class participation skills, which in turn motivates me to do well and stay ahead of my peers. What do you enjoy about DOAL? It has been such an adventure! There’s always something exciting to learn. We’re given many opportunities to gain industry experience. I’m currently on internship with Higher Ground, an Australian outdoor education company. Interestingly enough, I was a participant in one of their programmes during a Student Overseas Travel (SOT) two years ago. Who would’ve thought that I’d be working at Higher Ground as an intern and fellow instructor? Why should potential students join RP’s PFP? RP has committed lecturers, good facilities and a wealth of learning opportunities to help you achieve more than you’ll think possible. Choosing the PFP route was a lifechanging decision for me, it could be the same for you too!
Adabel Lim Jing Wen Diploma in Aviation Management School of Engineering Currently going through PFP
A dash of opportunity, a sprinkle of pragmatism, and a whole lot of aviation passion – this was the recipe that propelled Adabel to join PFP. Setting her sights on an illustrious career at Changi Airport, only sky high is the limit for this aspiring student.
Why did you choose to join Diploma in Aviation Management (DAVM)? I wanted to further my interests in the aviation field, and I knew that joining DAVM would equip me with what I need to pursue a good career in the field. There is a diverse range of jobs available in the industry, and getting a good foundation will help ensure that my skills will always be in high demand. How have you benefited from PFP? PFP allows me to get into RP without having to compete with other GCE O-Level graduates. Thanks to PFP, I am able to adjust to polytechnic life and make new friends amongst my fellow PFP students and RP seniors. It has helped me build a vibrant life on campus even before my diploma officially starts! What was the most memorable part of your PFP year? I had an enjoyable time in the programme, but the highlights of my PFP journey were definitely the out-of-classroom activities. Experiences such as our Social and Emotional Learning visits to the old folks home and the PFP Cohort Camp where I bonded with new classmates, are ones I’ll never forget.

An animal lover who sought to turn her passion into a rewarding career, Dian Alisha had her heart set on joining RP’s Diploma in Marine Science & Aquaculture. PFP provided her with a direct pathway to the course of her dreams, and the rest is history. How has PFP prepared you for your progression to a diploma? PFP is a good training ground for polytechnic life. Before joining the programme, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to adjust to the new environment because I can be anxious about meeting new people. Starting my polytechnic experience with PFP gave me additional time to adapt. I've been able to make friends too! Also, learning how to prioritise and manage the hectic school workload will definitely help to ease my transition into Year 1. How has joining PFP helped you get closer to your dreams? PFP has opened many doors for me. It is a good stepping stone that earned me a spot in RP, plus I’ve gained new skills and experiences that I wouldn't have thought possible. After graduation, I hope to pursue a specialised degree in the field of aquaculture or life science. What do you enjoy about being a RP student? At RP, we’re given plenty of opportunities to reach our fullest potential. Not only do we have a wonderful learning environment where students can shine and express themselves, we also have nurturing mentors and lecturers to guide us along. It was a transformative experience. The programme is well structured, and focuses not just on academics, but
also holistic development through modules like Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Project Management and Design Thinking. I really enjoyed SEL because it gave us diverse learning experiences and I got to apply my learning onto reallife situations. How has your diploma experience been like so far? It has been an eye-opening journey. Being exposed to simulated and practical learning environments –
HOW PFP WORKS: Instead of moving on to secondary 5, PFP enables you to embark on a one-year practice-oriented foundation curriculum conducted by RP lecturers. THE REPUBLIC Spirit
At RP, academic achievements and personal development are equally encouraged – exemplary students who exhibit good character are recognised with the prestigious REPUBLIC Award. Ahead, we spotlight inspiring students with a heart of gold, and the grades to match! Buveneswari D/O Raja Diploma in Business Information Systems School of Infocomm Year 3
Inspired to give back to the community after witnessing the selfless contributions of hospice care volunteers, Buveneswari started her own journey shortly after her GCE O-Level by tutoring the children of cancer patients. Even as a first-year, she sought out opportunities to get actively involved on campus. Her first step? Joining the School of Infocomm (SOI) Club.
24 Transform
“I wanted to be a leader that could give students a voice, and build a platform with the resources to reach out and help others on a larger scale,”
revealed Buveneswari, who was named the Vice President of SOI’s Community Division in her second year. Utilising her newfound influence, she started making improvements where she could, such as enlisting the help of lecturers and students with good academic grades to coach
SOI study groups – which earned her an Appreciated Peer Support Leader nomination. Doubling down on her efforts, Buveneswari organised various outreach activities, the most recent being a community programme for the elderly ill at St. Luke’s Hospital. So what’s next for Buveneswari? “I will definitely continue giving back! After graduation, I would like to start sponsoring a child through the World Vision Organisation!”
Len Jia Soon Diploma in Biomedical Science School of Applied Science Year 3
One charity event was all it took for Jia Soon to embrace the spirit of volunteering. “My first service learning project was with the Rainbow Centre, a volunteer organisation that works with special needs children. I got involved because I wanted to spend my free time in a meaningful way.” the Diploma in Biomedical Science student remembers. Taking advantage of the service learning opportunities at RP, Jia Soon soon became a regular presence. "Through
service learning, I’ve gained different perspectives that have broadened my horizons."
Thus, when Jia Soon found out about his classmate’s ongoing battle with cancer, it wasn’t surprising that he stepped up. “The best way to offer my support was to help him cope with studies so he wouldn’t fall behind,” Jia Soon said,“I did
what any other friend would, sending him homework assignments and sharing takeaways from lessons he missed.” In recognition of his contributions, Jia Soon’s lecturer nominated him for the REPUBLIC Award – an accolade that
he fully deserved. “It is an honour to receive this award,” shared the thirdyear student, “I hope that it will inspire other students to not only volunteer for a good cause, but to also look out and care for each other.”
Goh Yi Lin Diploma in Sport Management School of Sports, Health and Leisure Year 2
would soon open new doors of opportunity – beginning with the Red Cross Youth Leadership Humanitarian Camp. “It was an eye-opening experience that motivated me to dive deeper into the humanitarian scene,” Yi Lin revealed. Always on the look out for ways to give back, Yi Lin actively participates in a Youth Mentoring Programme, where she organises excursions for children from low-income families. Her long list of contributions bagged Yi Lin an unexpected reward: the REPUBLIC Award! “I am truly
A dedicated Singapore Red Cross volunteer, Yi Lin’s involvement with the humanitarian organisation began in her first year with RP. “I had first aid knowledge gained from joining the St. John Brigade back in
secondary school,” she shared, “Since I had spare time on weekends, I decided to sign up for the Red Cross Community First Aid Programme.” Little did she know that this small step
honoured to receive this award. I thank RP for recognising my efforts, and Singapore Red Cross for giving me the opportunity to volunteer. I will continue to serve the community to the best of my abilities!”

Xanna Chou Xing Zhi Pursuing a Specialist Diploma in Digital Content Creation for Business Graduated in 2018 with a Diploma in Media Production & Design Creative Content Executive at Cross Ratio Entertainment
HER WIN-WIN SITUATION
Barely into her second year at RP’s Diploma in Media Production & Design, Xanna faced a dilemma common to many other poly graduatesto-be: to head to university, or head out into the workforce. The latter option seemed the most practical – till she discovered the Earn and Learn Programme (ELP) track. Albeit unconventional, enrolling in ELP would allow Xanna to pursue further education without straining her finances, while gaining valuable work experience while at it. With her parents’ stamp of approval, Xanna took the leap after graduation, and never looked back.
FINDING HER PLACE
Kick-starting her ELP journey, Xanna, who was well-equipped with design and video production skills gained from her diploma, found the perfect fit at Cross Ratio Entertainment, an integrated music entertainment provider. Taking advantage of what she had studied through ELP modules like Visual Communication and User Experience Fundamentals, Xanna was able to contribute beyond her production expertise. “What we learn helps me add value to the company. For example, I proposed and worked on a website revamp, and I am glad that this can be considered as part of my school assignment!"
BUILDING HER PORTFOLIO
Her efforts paid off. Despite her rookie status, Xanna quickly became a go-to person for important projects. “I was assigned to work with Tay Kewei, a local artiste under our management, for a commissioned project,” she recounts, “I was initially nervous about working with actual clients, but my mentor – who is also my boss – was there to guide me through.” Under his close tutelage, Xanna was able to maximise her potential. “Thanks to ELP, I have the privilege of learning on the job. Not only was I given many good opportunities to showcase my skills, I’ve picked up plenty of industry insights that I wouldn’t have been able to learn anywhere else!”

Lin Jingzhou Pursuing a Specialist Diploma in Cloud Architecting & Management Graduated in 2018 with a Diploma in Infocomm Security Management AWS Consultant at Trimantium GrowthOps Limited
FINDING HIS NICHE
A career in the robust infocomm tech sector was always in the cards for Jingzhou. As a fresh graduate armed with the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management, he mulled between jumping straight into the field and furthering his studies – the Earn and Learn Programme (ELP) provided Jingzhou with the option to do both. “Joining ELP opened up brand new opportunities in cloud computing, a highly sought-after field,” Jingzhou shared, “Since I already have relevant skills, I knew that this was the right step to start my career.”
THE RIGHT RESOURCES
Diving straight into ELP, Jingzhou landed an AWS consultant role at Trimantium GrowthOps, a marketing and IT consultancy firm. Placed in a fast-paced environment that required advanced skills and experience was daunting, but Jingzhou was determined to embrace every challenge. “We have to be flexible because each client’s requirements are unique," he lets on, “I’m glad that I can count on my mentor for advice. He even shares useful tech resources to enrich my learning!”
FORGING AHEAD
Entering the programme was all it took to paint Jingzhou a clear picture of his career pathway. “ELP is a great stepping stone into the industry. So far, I’ve scored a relevant job, gained good insight into this sector and built fundamental skills,” revealed the future cloud security specialist, “Keep an open mind, step out of your comfort zone and take advantage of all ELP has to offer. It is really worth it!”
SECURING HER FUTURE
While her peers were applying for university, Nadia’s vision for life after graduation saw her stepping out into the working world as a logical route. Nadia shares, “ELP allowed me to build my portfolio and gain working experience while pursuing academic qualifications. And as a bonus, job security.”
IN FAMILIAR WATERS
Thanks to ELP, the entrepreneurial-minded student had plenty to contribute to her new job at Telepod, a transportation and tech start-up. “Each ELP component is highly relevant to what I’m dealing with on a daily basis,” Nadia muses, “After learning how businesses adapt different technologies to stay relevant and successful, I worked on integrating a chatbot onto the Telepod app to further enhance customer experience.”
A COMPETITIVE EDGE
It’s been barely a few months into ELP, but Nadia has already gained a leg-up over her peers. “An unexpected perk was being able to network with my classmates. Some of them are industry professionals, and through our discussions, I’ve gained different insights that will come in handy in the future!” And for Nadia, who now plans to stay on with Telepod, these invaluable connections are but one of the many advantages the programme has to offer. “You have nothing to lose! Just go for ELP, and milk every opportunity that comes your way!”
