We follow Mary Tay Xuan Yun at the School of Hospitality to discover what a typical school day is like for her!
Good morning! We’re having a really fun class today, and I’m glad you’re here to experience it with me! Let’s go!
A Day in the Life of a Hotel and Hospitality student!
Our lesson today is conducted at the Republic Hospitality Centre (RHC), and before class starts, our lecturer conducts a grooming check to ensure that we are ready for service.
8:45am
9:00am – 9:30am
My lecturer, Mr Hua Tai Heng then goes through the day's lesson on rooms division with us. As this is a two-part lesson, we will have the theory here and the practical session later at One Farrer Hotel & Spa.
9:30am – 10:30am
10:30am – 11:00am
“I even had a go at lifting the housekeeping caddy myself! Did you know that you have to keep your hands perpendicular to the ground when lifting up?”
We then go into the suite hotel training room where Mr Hua teaches us the proper way to lift up a housekeeping caddy.
After our theory, we gather and board the bus that’s bringing us to One Farrer Hotel & Spa! Here we go…!
After dividing us into groups, we then try our hands at changing in the pillow case and bedsheet in the guest room.
After lunch, we change into the hotel operations uniform, and meet for a briefing by the hotel’s housekeeping manager. Here, he explains to us the daily routine of the housekeepers and how fast they work. Fun fact: Housekeepers clean an average of 12-15 rooms a day!
11:15am– 12pm
1:00pm – 1:30 pm
1:30pm – 2:30pm
2:30pm – 3:00pm
3:45pm – 4:10pm
To make it extra fun, Mr Hua sets a timer to see how fast we can complete the task. I hope I can remove the bedsheet in less than 10 seconds!
We also learn that the hotel uses the Ezi-Maid Bed Lifting System to quicken the process of changing bedsheets. How cool!
Before we go off, here’s a group shot of us! Thank you for accompanying us through our day! See you!
After all of us have had the chance to experience a day in the life of a housekeeper, we assemble again for a debrief before calling it a day.

The Best Choice
What's PBL?
“Since childhood, I have always had an interest in the hotel industry when I stayed in different hotels during holiday trips with my family. I like how the hotel rooms are decorated and the friendly attitude of the staff who will try their best to help to cater to all our needs,” expressed Mary.
RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained lecturers, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to the class. With class sizes kept small, RP lecturers guide you to solve problems, overcome challenges, and enable you to experience working in a team. Such PBL sessions provide immense value as you would be well-prepared to take on the real working world.
With this, Mary knew that choosing the Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management is perfect for her since it has been her calling. A bubbly and helpful individual, the sophomore student sees herself excelling in the hotel industry in time to come.
Mary Tay Xuan Yun Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management School of Hospitality Year 2
Share with us your RP journey thus far! These two years of being an RP student really helped me to grow. I have become more confident and am not nervous when presenting to the class anymore. I enjoy studying here and I am glad that I came to RP.
How has the facilities and opportunities in SOH enhanced your learning? Here at SOH, we have the latest facilities and programmes that provide us with industry-relevant training in areas such as hotel management, restaurant and culinary operations, and more. These are all useful for preparing us to work in the hospitality industry in the future. We have hotel training rooms, hotel lobby and front desk located at the Republic Hospitality Centre. These facilities provide us with opportunities for hands-on training in key aspects of hotel operations such as housekeeping and being a front office personnel.
What is the best thing about being an RP student? Being a student here, I get to interact with many people and make friends as we change classes every semester. The best thing is that I met many lecturers who are willing to help me.
PBL Workshops for Secondary School Students Led by RP’s own student facilitators, the two-hour workshops held at RP will give secondary school students a taste of RP’s unique learning process. These exciting workshops are absolutely free, so come and experience RP today! To find out more, visit www.rp.edu.sg/learningjourneys
About the H211 Rooms Operations Practicum This module provides the necessary grounding for the Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management students to acquire the necessary skills before they commence their Industry Immersion Programme in Year 3. This module covers key operating skills and knowledge in the two critical operating areas in a hotel: Front Office and Housekeeping. The topics covered include reservation procedures, check-in and check-out procedures, concierge service, handle guest queries and complaints, cleaning of bedroom and bathroom, and turndown bed service. In addition, soft skills training in customer service, grooming and deportment, and business etiquette will be conducted.
The Service Champ With over 12 years of working experience in Front Office Operations at Swissotel The Stamford, Tai Heng brings to his lessons a bounty of industry knowledge and stories! In fact, prior to joining RP two and a half years ago, the service instructor helmed the role of Assistant Front Office Manager, managing a total of 80 staff, out of which included 18 managers.
Why did you choose to teach in RP? It has the environment and the right setting to nurture individuals to be a problem solver; to prepare them to be workforce ready in the dynamic world. This gives an educator a great sense of belonging and sense of achievement in transforming the students.
Why is PBL such an effective teaching tool? The modules I teach are practical-based, whereby we use the cognitive apprenticeship approach. The trainer explains in detail on how a task is being carried out, providing sufficient reasons, facts and explanations. The students will learn with full understanding, which will enhance interaction, participation, communication and application.
What makes RP students stand out from the rest? RP students are generally sincere and down-to-earth. They are able to work as a team collaboratively, being proactive and positive in dealing with challenges. Most importantly, they provide solutions and handle difficult situations effectively and efficiently.

They say you learn something new every day, and working in different teams each day is one of the main reasons why Julianna loves being an RP student. “This allows me to socialise, make new friends and learn to work better with many people, something that I was not used to doing in secondary school.”
Why should other students join RP? In RP, there is a myriad of activities we can participate in outside of our daily lessons, and it is always a good way to bond with friends. Even at the canteens, what better way to hang out with friends and talk about your day than over a delicious plate of food! Join us and be part of the fun!

I plan to open a simple concept restaurant in the future, when I have accumulated enough experience and capital. RP significantly contributes to this goal through its modules, especially for my course. While other schools focus on the technical aspects of the culinary arts, RP has a balance of both technical and managerial aspects of running a restaurant.
When it came to choosing a tertiary institute, Nichelle knew that RP was the one. With a strong interest in both Psychology and Business, the sophomore student did not think twice when making RP her number one choice, as it is the only polytechnic to offer the combination of both in a diploma.
Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself managing my own business in the future. My course is equipping me with the knowledge I need in the business industry and the opportunity to apply these knowledge to real challenges. Also, RP’s daily presentation allows me to improve my communication skills as well, which is very much needed in the business industry.

It’s an institution that believes in evolving. It’s young so it knows it cannot afford to fear change. This is very healthy. RP also works hard to have relationships with the industry. I also liked that it incorporated social media in its modules. And there was a close relationship with the industry through its Portfolio Development and Industry Immersion Programmes”.

Q: How has Ms Fashela added value to your studies and life in RP? Ms Fashela is very caring and treats most of her students as friends. There's no barrier in between us and it is quite easy to talk to her about anything. She has made my life in RP real exciting and furthermore, the knowledge she provides is invaluable towards what I learn every day in my diploma.
Q: Share with us a moment when Ms Fashela went above and beyond for you. Whenever my friends and I are staying back in school to work on projects and assignments, Ms Fashela would always offer to buy us dinner and sometimes, would stay back with us also in order to keep us company and give us moral support. After we're done and heading back home, she would also offer us cab rides to our homes. Ms Fashela really goes all out to ensure her students are taken care of well.
S t a n to n S It’s All About Learning “I encourage students to ask and answer questions in class, and to stress that there are no wrong answers; all answers are good answers. Having said that, I also encourage students to critically but respectfully think about the strengths and weaknesses of all the answers, even those given by myself,” says Dr Ooi. A lecturer for the last five years, Dr Ooi worked for one year at the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore (NUS) banking, isolating and characterising stem cells from teeth. Prior to that, he did his PhD, also at NUS, studying genetic networks and growth factors affecting wound healing and scarring before joining RP.
What do you like best about RP as an institution? The facilities in RP are excellent, from the sporting facilities to the wellequipped laboratories and library.
The students are also very artistically talented, and there is a vibrant atmosphere with all the cheerleading and dancing practices.
How has your teaching experience with PBL been? When done well, PBL is a good way to learn; one is free to explore creative and unorthodox solutions to practical problems, and to also study content in greater detail without being limited by the lecturer or syllabus. Generally speaking, I find that most students learn better this way.
Why should potential students consider RP as their choice of tertiary institute? The small student to lecturer ratio enables easy accessibility to your lecturers, and the facilities and environment provide a very dynamic and fun environment for all students. These factors make RP a very attractive choice that should be seriously considered by all potential students.

Q: What is the best part of having Dr Ooi as your lecturer? Dr Ooi has always been a listening ear in class and ever-ready in answering any questions or doubts! I tend to ask quite a number of questions as I don’t grasp concepts as fast but Dr Ooi, being a patient lecturer, would always answer them be it any time or place.
Q: How would you describe Dr Ooi? Dr Ooi has a very good sense of humour. He revitalises the class energy and our lessons with his interesting jokes! Dr Ooi also has a natural talent in explaining concepts in-depth clearly and effectively which really helps in our understanding.
Q: How has Dr Ooi added value to your studies in RP? Given his industry knowledge, I feel that his experience really helps us attain quality work in the laboratory as we know that is expected in the industry. With that, we ensure that we are fully prepared before a presentation and as biomedical students, Dr Ooi also ensure that we practice proper laboratory hygiene and skills.

FAQ What is RP campus life like?
Upon graduation from RP, what options do I have? This is a question many students (past and present) have asked themselves when deciding their future. Upon graduation, you have many options, including going on to launch your career and furthering your studies at a university. Many of our graduates land themselves jobs in the public and private sectors, while some go on to pursue their degree programmes locally or overseas. Some even venture out as an entrepreneur to start their own businesses.
RP’s campus environment is conducive to students’ intellectual, physical, and social development. There are roundthe-year programmes to promote healthy lifestyle through sports and physical activities. RP is also very active in the promotion of the arts. Talks, seminars, and workshops covering a wide range of topics also prepare students for successful careers.

It has not been an easy journey for me but it has been worth it. In ITE, I put in my best effort to succeed in the course I was in so that I could join RP upon graduation. When I was exploring my education options, I was immediately attracted to RP because it is the only institution to offer students the Android Programming elective module, which I am very keen in.
Has it been easy adapting to the RP learning style? It was not difficult at all for me to adapt to RP’s Problem-based Learning (PBL) method because it is something I used to practise back in ITE too. I enjoy the way lessons are conducted in RP because it gives me a chance to participate fully and share Tong my opinions with everyone. Â
Why should students apply for the RP Freshmen Scholarship?
With the help of the scholarship, you would not need to worry about school fees and would be able to concentrate fully on your studies. Through the scholarship, I have gained more confidence in going further as RP has shown me that we are all given the same opportunities no matter where we come from.

M Sobana
Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture School of Applied Science Year 1 Far East Organization Scholarship Recipient
Why did you choose RP? RP adopts the PBL method, which I find very interesting. Back in secondary school, I always asked myself, "Why am I learning all these?" and "How can I apply what I’ve learnt in school to real-life situations?" PBL is the answer to those questions. I chose RP because the institution equips me with the knowledge I need to succeed in the working world.
How has the RP experience been for you? There is no doubt that RP goes the extra mile to take care of their students, and no achievement goes unrewarded. I was awarded with the RP Freshmen Scholarship because of my O-Level results. This was a great start for me even before I started my academic year!
What inspired you to study in the Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture (DMAC)? I have always been intrigued by the oceans and the creatures living in the submarine regions of our planet. Hence, I felt that joining DMAC would be the right choice for me as it would give me an opportunity to learn more about marine environments and creatures. On top of that, I also felt that this diploma would serve as a stepping stone for me to start my career in this field.
How has the scholarship benefitted you? Receiving the scholarship has enabled me to spend more time on my studies as I do not have to worry about working parttime to earn pocket money. It has also allowed me to pursue my interest for archery.
Tell us more about your adventurous course!
What is your dream career?
The best thing about my course is basically everything about it. The outdoors is our classroom, so we frequently go out for classes to learn and have fun. With that said, I am certain that my diploma will set me on the path to fulfilling my dreams and aspirations.
I aspire to be a marine biologist. I would like to study about orcas (killer whales) and contribute to conservation efforts. In this diploma, we have a wide range of volunteer options and internships awaiting us, giving us hands-on industryrelevant experience.

Problem-based Learning (PBL) – A helping hand
Be inspired by our students’ marvellous final year projects (FYP)!
School of Engineering
Wai Yan Tun Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering 2015 Graduate
A group of Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering students took part in the Singapore Robotics Games 2015 as part of their FYP, and emerged as champions! In this fun-filled and challenging competition, the team of contestants had to design and build a remote operative vehicle or an autonomous underwater vehicle. Winning consecutively for the seventh
PBL is one of the best techniques we learnt at RP. We didn’t have readily available sources and solutions for all the problems we faced in creating a new robot design. However, PBL was a great help during the time of research in guiding us to narrow down road blocks, problems, strengths and weaknesses of all the prototypes and selecting the best design for the competition.
RP rocks! In RP, it is proven that we can get a better and faster solution when we work as a team than as individuals. Most importantly, we are able to delegate tasks to the right people to achieve our goals.

The science students from the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences had to design and synthesise potential drug candidates for photodynamic therapy, which was able to absorb visible light energy, easy to make in pure form, and target the DNA of the cells. The aim of this project was to improve the current condition of the healthcare industry.
Patent project The biggest highlight of the FYP was when our project was patented. This project has several benefits to offer to industry, society as well as to education. For industries, it will provide fast and cost-effective manufacturing process, saving the cost of ingredients and manpower. Moreover, our FYP also won several competitions like Polytechnic Students Research Programme 2015 and Young Scientists Symposium 2015.

In this FYP, the team from the Diploma in Interactive and Digital Media designed and illustrated a series of 12 readers (storybooks suitable for children age 3-5) with a unique storyline. In addition, they are also required to transform the illustrated stories into animations, which are distributed to the readers as well. Syarinah Binte Sani Diploma in Interactive and Digital Media 2015 Graduate
The task We were grouped into teams of three and were tasked to revamp the illustration of two children books individually, introducing a local flavour to the characters and the backgrounds. The most memorable moment was seeing the final outcome of the books I’ve illustrated.
Join RP! I had the best three years of my life in RP because of how the lessons are crafted. The lessons are separated into meetings, and each lesson feels short because of reasonable breaks in between, and classes in RP are more hands-on. RP provides a holistic education, and at the same time, encourage you to embrace your interests.
Azurah Jan Che Onn Azahar Diploma in Sonic Arts 2015 Graduate
School of Technology for the Arts In this final year project, students from the Diploma in Sonic Arts supported City Music’s initiative to create Singapore’s very own music keyboard in collaboration with KORG, a world renowned electronic instrument manufacturer. The outcome of this collaboration created additional built-in instrument patches, as well as musical styles that define the music and culture of our three ethnic races – Chinese, Malay and Indian. Examples of patches include: Di Zi, Gu Zheng, Ban Gu, Dholak, Veena, Thavil, Marwas, Angklung, and Serunai to name a few.
Achievement unlocked! The best part of the FYP is having hands-on experiences with so many rare instruments and learning from the musicians themselves! We were also very lucky as we got to be interviewed by a few local newspapers, such as Lianhe Wanbao, The New Paper, The Straits Times, Berita Harian.
Relevance to class work We definitely had to apply our knowledge gained from class to our FYP. We learnt sound treatment; how to "clean" it up to prepare it for the next stage of processing, and how to work with each other as working with classmates is a daily part of RP lessons.
Chaw Yeong Soon Diploma in Social Enterprise Management Year 3
School of Management and Communication* Students from the Diploma in Social Enterprise Management were tasked to collaborate with various organisations to work on an FYP, and one particular team worked with Silver Sparkles, a social enterprise that works with the Silver Community. Their task was to develop a comprehensive marketing plan for the current business to reach out to a wider audience group effectively and efficiently and to develop a unique selling proposition for Silver Sparkles’ Build-ItYourself (BIY) campaign.
Highlights of the FYP For our FYP, I enjoyed the process of developing business plan for our partner. In addition, I was in-charge of the product development and e-commerce in our team, where I had the opportunity to do my favourite task – designing. And of course, the main highlight of this FYP was getting a distinction.
Group work in RP There is a saying that goes “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. I believe by working in groups, we produce better ideas and solutions.
Saudah Bte Ali Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management Year 3

As part of the inaugural collaboration between the school and the Sports Hub Library, students from the Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management were tasked to launch the first SEA Games inspired sports fashion and runway workshop and competition called 'Athlein Runway'! The dynamic team staged a polished fashion show attended by 100 spectators and participants. They also managed to garner support from stakeholders and sponsors such as Noel Caleb, Thorb, The North Face, Sports Hub, SHAPE Singapore, and Redbull.
The journey Organising this event required us to look at every aspect in detail. We were definitely able to put PBL to practice when it came to coming up with solutions. I felt honoured to be one of the first few to organise such an event. Being able to work with various stakeholders, such as Sports Hub and Noel Caleb, has made our journey in RP a memorable one!

I remember being hesitant to sign up for the Student Overseas Trips (SOT), but after encouraging me and sharing that the same opportunity would not come by the second time, I decided to go for it, and thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience I’ve had in Sydney!”
“We strive to take a proactive approach towards student care and development. As mentors, we strive to actively engage our students, monitor their progress and attend to their concerns be it financial, social or academic.”
“My mentor never fails to check on us, and always makes it a point to have sessions with us. As I wasn’t too happy with my academic performance, I decided to approach him to discuss about my results. Not only did he listen attentively to my issues, he also gave me valuable suggestions on how to better manage my time and even set a target for me to meet in the coming semester to boost my morale. I am grateful to have such an understanding mentor.”
“I was thrilled when my lecturer became my mentor when I was in Year 2. Apart from checking on my well-being whenever he sees me, my mentor also cracks jokes and shares valuable experiences in class. I must say that the tips and suggestions he gave me before my internship were very useful, and the encouragement I received from him pushed me to aim higher. There was also an incident when my mentor called for a meeting for something I had done. I thought I would be reprimanded, but it turned to be quite a surprise when he gave me vouchers to reduce my household financial load. Thank you for the care and concern, mentor!”

How has your journey as an RP student been?
As a team leader, my role was to ensure that the entire team was on par with one another when doing the project. The team and I worked hand in hand throughout the project, making it a smooth process for all of us. I believe that leadership is an action, not a position.
Being an RP student, it has taught me the importance of being independent. It has instilled a sense of awareness and a core development of my confidence in all that I do. In my three years in RP, I have learned how to think out of the box and come up with realistic solutions and smarter ideas.
How has this FYP prepared you for the industry?

How has the PBL system helped you in the working world?
I need to thank Mr Noah Tay from IHiS, my personal supervisor for trusting me on this prototype project. He was the one who mooted the idea of creating a patient room automation to support patient recovery by creating a room environment that matches the patient’s personal unique preference.
Problem-based Learning (PBL) has instilled a different perspective in me. There are many other ways to get around a problem, with so many possibilities, but it’s up to the individual to judge for himself what’s best for themselves and the situation. Applying what I learned in school is different; we have to respect everyone’s point of view. It depends which “criteria” we want to fulfil – whether it’s the boss, our colleagues or ourselves.
How has RP’s teaching method benefitted you? PBL has shaped my cognitive thinking on how one should approach a problem in an efficient way. I’m grateful for the small class size and how we are given the attention we need from our lecturers.
Why should other students make RP their choice? The PBL system is unique and will surely equip you for your future career. What’s more, the facilities here, such as the laboratories, are excellent and certainly add value to your education.
